RESUMEN

The freshness of Atlantic salmon is influenced mainly by tissue metabolism, which in turn is affected by storage time and conditions. The alterations in taste profiles and nutritional values of salmon when packaged using vacuum methods have not been fully understood, and the factors contributing to these changes require further research. In this work, the extraction method for flavor nutrients from salmon was optimized via the Plackett-Burman (PB) test. A sensitive and rapid targeted metabolomics method for the simultaneous determination of 34 nutrients was successfully established via ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole/linear ion trap composite mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTRAP/MS), and various nutritional compositions during storage at 0 °C under different vacuum conditions (0 kPa or -90 kPa) for 4 and 8 days were analyzed. Results showed that storage time had a significant effect on salmon metabolism. The total amino acids decreased by 62.95% and 65.89% at 0 kPa and -90 kPa, respectively. Notably, a marked reduction in histidine after 8 days at -90 kPa may have diminished bitterness, while decreased levels of umami-tasting amino acids like glutamine and aspartic acid affected the overall flavor profile. Overall, the packaging conditions at 0 °C and 0 kPa were more suitable for the preservation of most nutrients in salmon. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the reduction in substances was mainly related to the alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism pathways. Alanine, inosine, and histidine, whose levels changed significantly, can bind to the typical umami taste receptor TIR1/TIR3 and can be biomarkers to monitor and determine the freshness or spoilage of salmon after 4-8 days of storage. This study revealed the changes in small-molecule nutrients in salmon during storage under different packaging conditions, which provides a reference for the packaging preservation technology of fresh salmon and new ideas for the evaluation of salmon quality and determination of freshness.

Motivated by very recent experimental observations of the 1/9-magnetization plateaus in YCu_{3}(OH)_{6+x}Br_{3-x} and YCu_{3}(OD)_{6+x}Br_{3-x}, our study delves into the magnetic-field-induced phase transitions in the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice using the variational Monte Carlo technique. We uncover a phase transition from a zero-field Dirac spin liquid to a field-induced magnetically disordered phase that exhibits the 1/9-magnetization plateau. Through a comprehensive analysis encompassing the magnetization distribution, spin correlations, chiral order parameter, topological entanglement entropy, ground-state degeneracy, Chern number, and excitation spectrum, we pinpoint the phase associated with this magnetization plateau as a chiral Z_{3} topological quantum spin liquid and elucidate its diverse physical properties.

BACKGROUND: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a major component of gastrointestinal cancer treatments. In multidrug regimens such as FOLFOX, FOLFIRI, and FOLFIRINOX, 5-FU is commonly administered as a bolus followed by an infusion. However, the pharmacologic rationale for incorporating the 5-FU bolus in these regimens is unclear, and there are other effective regimens for gastrointestinal cancers that do not include the bolus. The purpose of this study was to determine whether omission of the 5-FU bolus was associated with a difference in survival and toxicity. METHODS: A real-world database from Flatiron Health was queried for patients with advanced colorectal, gastroesophageal, and pancreatic cancers who received first-line FOLFOX, FOLFIRI, and FOLFIRINOX regimens. Cox proportional hazards and Kaplan-Meier analyses were performed to compare survival outcomes between patients who received the 5-FU bolus and those who did not. Inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) analysis was performed to adjust for treatment selection bias. RESULTS: This study included 11,765 patients with advanced colorectal (n=8,670), gastroesophageal (n=1,481), and pancreatic (n=1,614) cancers. Among all first-line 5-FU multidrug regimens, 10,148 (86.3%) patients received a 5-FU bolus and 1,617 (13.7%) did not. After IPTW analysis, we found that omitting the bolus was not associated with a decrease in overall survival (hazard ratio, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.91-1.07; P=.74). However, omitting the bolus was associated with reductions in neutropenia (10.7% vs 22.7%; P<.01), thrombocytopenia (11.2% vs 16.1%; P<.01), and use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors after treatment (19.6% vs 29.1%; P<.01). CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for baseline clinical factors, we found that omission of the 5-FU bolus from FOLFOX, FOLFIRI, and FOLFIRINOX regimens was not associated with decreased survival, but resulted in decreased toxicity and possible health care savings.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated all-cause and suicide mortality rates in adolescents and young adults following an initial psychiatric admission to elucidate the long-term outcomes for this vulnerable group by focusing on the risks associated with various psychiatric diagnostic categories. METHODS: This study involved 9762 adolescents and young adults discharged from their first psychiatric admission and matched 1:1 with 9762 individuals discharged following a diagnosis of appendicitis on the basis of birth year and sex by using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Both stratified (model 1) and standard (model 2) Cox regression analyses were conducted to assess variations in all-cause and suicide mortality between the groups. RESULTS: Over the 15-year follow-up period, the adolescents and young adults discharged from their first psychiatric admission exhibited an approximately 3-fold increased risk of death from any cause (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.97 in model 1, 2.83 in model 2) and an approximately ten times higher risk of suicide (11.13 in model 1, 9.23 in model 2) compared with those discharged with a diagnosis of appendicitis. Those discharged with alcohol use disorder or major depressive disorder exhibited higher hazard ratios for both all-cause and suicide compared with the reference group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings reveal a considerable risk of all-cause and suicide mortality in adolescents and young adults following discharge from their first psychiatric admission. These results highlight an urgent need for tailored interventions and continued support for this demographic.

Copper ions, implicated in processes such as oxidative stress and inflammation, are believed to play a crucial role in cardiovascular disease, a prevalent and deadly disease. Despite this, current diagnostic methods fail to detect early stage cardiovascular disease or track copper ion accumulation, limiting our understanding of the disease's progression. Therefore, the development of noninvasive techniques to image copper ions in cardiovascular disease is urgently needed to enhance diagnostic precision and therapeutic strategies. In this study, we report the successful synthesis and application of a copper ion-activated photoacoustic probe, CS-Cu, which exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward copper ions both in vitro and in vivo. CS-Cu was able to noninvasively monitor the changes in copper ion levels and differentiate between different mice based on copper ions in urine. Furthermore, the probe demonstrated good photoacoustic stability and exhibited no significant toxicity in the mice. These findings suggest that CS-Cu could be a promising tool for early detection and monitoring of Cu2+ levels in vivo and urine, providing a new perspective on the role of copper ions in cardiovascular disease.

Introduction: Oligomeric alpha-synuclein in red blood cells (RBC-o-α-Syn) has been shown to be increased in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, factors that affect RBC-o-α-Syn levels remain to be elucidated. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlations between RBC-o-α-Syn levels and the age, sex and different clinical variables of patients with PD. Methods: 167 patients with PD and 119 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in this study. The patients with PD were diagnosed based on the MDS clinical diagnostic criteria for PD. All participants were evaluated for their clinical characteristics. Western blot analysis was used to examine the molecular sizes of RBC-o-α-Syn. A newly established chemiluminescent immunoassay was used to measure RBC-o-α-Syn levels. Results: Higher RBC-o-α-Syn levels were detected in PD patients than in HC subjects. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve indicated that a cut off value of 55.29 ng/mg discriminated well between PD patients and HC subjects, with a sensitivity of 67.66% (95% CI: 60.24-74.29%), a specificity of 88.24% (95% CI: 81.22-92.86%), and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.857. The levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in female than male patients (p = 0.033). For different subtypes, the levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in the MIX subtype than the tremor-dominant (TD) PD. In addition, the levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in patients with than without cognitive impairment (p = 0.016), and negatively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores (r = -0.156, p = 0.044). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that RBC-o-α-Syn levels in patients with PD are higher than those in HC subjects and affected by the sex and the severity of cognitive impairment.

The species Turpinia affinis Merr. et Perry 1941 is widely distributed throughout southwestern China. In folk medicine, this species is often used as a substitute for the Chinese medicine Turpiniae Folium, whose legal origin is T. arguta (Lindl.) Seem. In order to ascertain the relationship between these two species, the chloroplast genome of T. affinis was aequenced and assembled, resulting in a typical quadripartite molecule with a length of 160,769 base pairs and an overall GC content of 37.3%. Additionally, 131 genes were annotated, comprising 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. A maximum likelihood analysis demonstrated that the Turpinia species form a monophyletic clade, with T. affinis positioned as the sister taxon to the clade comprising the remaining species within the genus. This outcome enhances the genomic data for the genus Turpinia and will contribute to further investigations into phylogenetics, evolution, and sustainable resource utilization.

Aldosterone-producing adenoma is a subtype of primary aldosteronism. Recent advancements in multi-omics research have led to significant progress in understanding primary aldosteronism at the genetic level. Among the various genes associated with the development of aldosterone-producing adenomas, the KCNJ5 (potassium inwardly rectifying channel, subfamily J, member 5) gene has received considerable attention due to its prevalence as the most common somatic mutation gene in primary aldosteronism. This paper aims to integrate the existing evidence on the involvement of KCNJ5 gene in the pathogenesis of aldosterone-producing adenomas, to enhance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of aldosterone-producing adenomas from the perspective of genetics, and to provide novel insights for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of aldosterone-producing adenomas.

Previous studies have shown that α-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregates derived from the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) exhibit different phosphorylation, cytotoxicity, and seeding activity. However, the mechanism underlying the differences remains poorly understood. Here, recombinant human α-Syn was incubated in the plasma of patients with PD and MSA, and the oligomers formed in the plasma (PD-O-α-Syn and MSA-O-α-Syn) were purified and analyzed for their phosphorylation, cytotoxicity and seeding activity. In vitro assays revealed that both PD-O-α-Syn and MSA-O-α-Syn were phosphorylated at serine 129. However, the phosphorylation degree of MSA-O-α-Syn was significantly higher than that of PD-O-α-Syn. In addition, MSA-O-α-Syn exhibited stronger cytotoxicity and seeding activity compared with PD-O-α-Syn. In vivo experiments showed that mice receiving intrastriatal inoculation of MSA-O-α-Syn developed more severe motor dysfunction and dopaminergic degeneration than mice receiving intrastriatal inoculation of PD-O-α-Syn. Compared with the mice inoculated with PD-O-α-Syn, the mice inoculated with MSA-O-α-Syn accumulated more phosphorylated and oligomerized α-Syn in the striatum and brain regions (substantia nigra, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex) away from the inoculated site. The results obtained suggest that α-Syn oligomers formed in PD and MSA plasma are different in phosphorylation, cytotoxicity, and seeding activity.

α-Synuclein accumulation and transmission are vital to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease, although the mechanisms underlying misfolded α-synuclein accumulation and propagation have not been conclusively determined. The expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1, which is abundantly expressed in neurons and considered to be a multifunctional endocytic receptor, is elevated in the neurons of patients with Parkinson's disease. However, whether there is a direct link between low-density lipoprotein receptor- related protein 1 and α-synuclein aggregation and propagation in Parkinson's disease remains unclear. Here, we established animal models of Parkinson's disease by inoculating monkeys and mice with α-synuclein pre-formed fibrils and observed elevated low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 levels in the striatum and substantia nigra, accompanied by dopaminergic neuron loss and increased α-synuclein levels. However, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 knockdown efficiently rescued dopaminergic neurodegeneration and inhibited the increase in α-synuclein levels in the nigrostriatal system. In HEK293A cells overexpressing α-synuclein fragments, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 levels were upregulated only when the N-terminus of α-synuclein was present, whereas an α-synuclein fragment lacking the N-terminus did not lead to low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 upregulation. Furthermore, the N-terminus of α-synuclein was found to be rich in lysine residues, and blocking lysine residues in PC12 cells treated with α-synuclein pre-formed fibrils effectively reduced the elevated low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 and α-synuclein levels. These findings indicate that low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 regulates pathological transmission of α-synuclein from the striatum to the substantia nigra in the nigrostriatal system via lysine residues in the α-synuclein N-terminus.

OBJECTIVE: Paradoxical embolism caused by a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a rare cause of myocardial infarction (MI) in individuals presenting with normal coronary arteries on angiography; however, the deduction is often made due to the inability to identify the exact thrombus that penetrates the atrial septum. Previous studies using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have reported in situ thrombi attached to PFO tunnel in patients with cryptogenic stroke. However, the presence of such thrombi in patients with cryptogenic MI (without a definite cause) remains uncertain. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed OCT data collected from February to July 2023 on PFO tunnels in MI adults with normal coronary arteries on angiography. RESULTS: Three patients diagnosed with cryptogenic MI and a PFO underwent OCT examination. These patients exhibited varying OCT findings. White thrombi and endocardial abnormalities in the channel were observed in two patients with MI. No thrombus or anomalous morphology on the endocardial surface was noted in the third patient. PFO closure was performed on all patients, and follow-up was completed by October 1, 2023. None of the patients reported recurrence of chest pain. CONCLUSION: In situ thrombus was identified within the PFO channel in patients with cryptogenic MI, potentially serving as a novel etiological factor for coronary thrombosis.

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) caused by patent foramen ovale (PFO)-based paradoxical embolism is rare, and there are few case reports in the literature. Case summary: Here, we report a case of MI in which optical coherence tomography revealed in situ thrombi in the PFO channel. Discussion: In addition to paradoxical embolism, in situ thrombus may also be one of the pathogenic mechanisms of PFO in patients with MI.

Metabolic reprogramming is recognized as a hallmark of cancer, enabling cancer cells to acquire essential biomolecules for cell growth, often characterized by upregulated glycolysis and/or fatty acid synthesis-related genes. The transcription factor forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) has been implicated in various cancers, contributing significantly to their development, including colorectal cancer (CRC), a major global health concern. Despite FOXM1's established role in cancer, its specific involvement in the Warburg effect and fatty acid biosynthesis in CRC remains unclear. We analyzed The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Colonic Adenocarcinoma and Rectal Adenocarcinoma (COADREAD) datasets to derive the correlation of the expression levels between FOXM1 and multiple genes and the survival prognosis based on FOXM1 expression. Using two human CRC cell lines, HT29 and HCT116, we conducted RNAi or plasmid transfection procedures, followed by a series of assays, including RNA extraction, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot analysis, cell metabolic assay, glucose uptake assay, Oil Red O staining, cell viability assay, and immunofluorescence analysis. Higher expression levels of FOXM1 correlated with a poorer survival prognosis, and the expression of FOXM1 was positively correlated with glycolysis-related genes SLC2A1 and LDHA, de novo lipogenesis-related genes ACACA and FASN, and MYC. FOXM1 appeared to modulate AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling, the expression of c-Myc, proteins related to glycolysis and fatty acid biosynthesis, and glucose uptake, as well as extracellular acidification rate in HT29 and HCT116 cells. In summary, FOXM1 plays a regulatory role in glycolysis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and cellular energy consumption, thereby influencing CRC cell growth and patient prognosis.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Transcription factor forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) regulates glycolysis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and cellular energy consumption, which, together, controls cell growth and patient prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Background: Currently, there is a lack of an objective quantitative measure to comprehensively evaluate the inflammatory activity of axSpA, which poses certain challenges in accurately assessing the disease activity. Objective: To explore the value of combined-parameter models of sacroiliac joints (SIJs) MRI relaxometry and peripheral blood Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in evaluating the inflammatory activity of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Methods: This retrospective clinical study included 88 axSpA patients (median age 31.0 (22.0, 41.8) years, 21.6% females) and 20 controls (median age 28.0 (20.5, 49.5) years, 40.0% females). The axSpA group was classified into active subgroup (n=50) and inactive subgroup (n=38) based on ASDAS-CRP. All participants underwent SIJs MRI examination including T1 and T2* mapping, and peripheral blood flow cytometry analysis of MAIT cells (defined as CD3+Vα7.2+CD161+) and their activation markers (CD69). The T1 and T2* values, as were the percentages of MAIT cells and CD69+MAIT cells were compared between different groups. Combined-parameter models were established using logistic regression, and ROC curves were employed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy. Results: The T1 values of SIJs and %CD69+MAIT cells in the axSpA group and its subgroup were higher than the control group (p<0.05), while %MAIT cells were lower than the control group (p<0.05). The T1 values and %CD69+MAIT cells correlated positively, while %MAIT cells correlated negatively, with the ASDAS-CRP (r=0.555, 0.524, -0.357, p<0.001). Between the control and axSpA groups, and between the inactive and active subgroups, the combined-parameter model T1 mapping+%CD69+MAIT cells has the best efficacy (AUC=0.959, 0.879, sensibility=88.6, 70%, specificity=95.0, 94.7%, respectively). Conclusion: The combined-parameter model T1 mapping+%CD69+MAIT cells allows a more accurate evaluation of the level of inflammatory activity.

With the discovery of evidence that many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment influence human health, their toxic effects and mechanisms have become a hot topic of research. However, investigations into their endocrine-disrupting toxicity under combined binary exposure, especially the molecular mechanism of combined effects, have rarely been documented. In this study, two typical EDCs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-HBP), were selected to examine their combined effects and molecular mechanism on MCF-7 cell proliferation at environmentally relevant exposure concentrations. We have successfully established a model to evaluate the binary combined toxic effects of endocrine disruptors, presenting combined effects in a simple and direct way. Results indicated that the combined effect changed from additive to synergistic from 1.25 × 10-8 M to 4 × 10-7 M. Metabolomics analyses suggested that exposure to PFOA and 4-HBP caused significant alterations in purine metabolism, arginine, and proline metabolism and had superimposed influences on metabolism. Enhanced combined effects were observed in glycine, serine, and threonine metabolic pathways compared to exposure to PFOS and 4-HBP alone. Additionally, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are primarily involved in Biological Processes, especially protein targeting the endoplasmic reticulum, and significantly impact the oxidative phosphorylation and thermogenesis-related KEGG pathway. By integrating metabolome and transcriptome analyses, PFOA and 4-HBP regulate purine metabolism, the TCA cycle, and endoplasmic reticulum protein synthesis in MCF-7 cells via mTORC1, which provides genetic material, protein, and energy for cell proliferation. Furthermore, molecular docking confirmed the ability of PFOA and 4-HBP to stably bind the estrogen receptor, indicating that they have different binding pockets. Collectively, these findings will offer new insights into understanding the mechanisms by which EDCs produce combined toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Discriminating the stage of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is crucial for clinical decision. Application of conventional T2-weighted imaging in the staging is still limited. PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of T2 mapping based on two different regions of interest (ROIs) for staging GO. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 56 GO patients were retrospectively enrolled and divided into two groups according to the clinical activity score (CAS). T2 relaxation time (T2RT) of extraocular muscle (EOM) on T2 mapping based on two different ROIs (T2RTROI-1: ROIs were drawn separately in the four EOMs; T2RTROI-2: ROI was drawn in the most inflamed EOM) was measured and compared between active and inactive groups. RESULTS: Both T2RTROI-1 and T2RTROI-2 values in the active GO were significantly higher than those of inactive GO (P <0.001). T2RTROI-1 and T2RTROI-2 values were positively correlated with CAS (rs=0.73, 0.69; P <0.001). When the T2RTROI-1 value of 83.3 ms and T2RTROI-2 value of 106.3 ms were used as cutoff values for staging GO, respectively, the best results were obtained with areas under the curve (AUCs) of 0.822 and 0.827. There was no significant difference for AUCs between T2RTROI-1 and T2RTROI-2 (P = 0.751). Excellent and good inter-observer agreements were achieved in quantitative measurements for T2RTROI-1 and T2RTROI-2 values, respectively, with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.954 and 0.882. CONCLUSION: The T2RT values derived from two different ROIs were useful for assessment of disease activity. Taking reproducibility and diagnostic performance into consideration, T2RTROI-1 would be an ideal image biomarker for staging GO compared to T2RTROI-2.

PURPOSE: Dietary fiber (DF) has a good application prospect in effectively restoring the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. Ginseng-DF has good physicochemical properties and physiological activity and shows positive effects in enhancing immunity. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Ginseng-DF on intestinal mucosal barrier injury induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX) in immunosuppressed mice and its possible mechanism. METHODS: The effects of Gginseng-DF on immune function in mice were studied by delayed-type hypersensitivy, lymphocyte proliferation assay and NK cytotoxicity assay, the T lymphocyte differentiation and intestinal barrier integrity were analyzed by flow cytometry and western blot. RESULTS: Ginseng-DF (2.5% and 5%) could attenuate the inhibition of DTH response by CTX, promote the transformation and proliferation of lymphocytes, and stimulate NK effector cell activity. At the same time, Ginseng-DF could restore the proportion of CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocytes induced by CTX to different extents, improved spleen tissue damage, promoted the secretion of immunoglobulin IgG, and enhanced body immunity. More importantly, Ginseng-DF could up-regulate the contents of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-1ß in serum and intestine of immunosuppressed mice to maintain the balance between Th1/Th2 cytokines, and improve the permeability of intestinal mucosal barrier. Meanwhile, Ginseng-DF could reduce intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis and improve intestinal adaptive immunity in CTX-induced immunosuppressed mice by regulating MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Ginseng-DF can be used as a safe dietary supplement to enhance body immunity and reduce intestinal mucosal injury caused by CTX.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) seriously threatens the human health. Previous investigations revealed that γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) was tightly associated with the chronic injury, hepatic fibrosis, and the development of HCC, therefore might act as a potential indicator for monitoring the HCC-related processes. Herein, with the contribution of a structurally optimized probe ETYZE-GGT, the bimodal imaging in both far red fluorescence (FL) and photoacoustic (PA) modes has been achieved in multiple HCC-related models. To our knowledge, this work covered the most comprehensive models including the fibrosis and developed HCC processes as well as the premonitory induction stages (autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). ETYZE-GGT exhibited steady and practical monitoring performances on reporting the HCC stages via visualizing the GGT dynamics. The two modes exhibited working consistency and complementarity with high spatial resolution, precise apparatus and desirable biocompatibility. In cooperation with the existing techniques including testing serum indexes and conducting pathological staining, ETYZE-GGT basically realized the universal application for the accurate pre-clinical diagnosis of as many HCC stages as possible. By deeply exploring the mechanically correlation between GGT and the HCC process, especially during the premonitory induction stages, we may further raise the efficacy for the early diagnosis and treatment of HCC.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent gynecological endocrine conditions affecting reproductive women. It can feature a variety of symptoms, such as obesity, insulin resistance, skin conditions, and infertility. Women with PCOS are susceptible to illnesses including mood disorders, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Among them, depression is the most common in PCOS and has a detrimental effect on quality of life. Depression may occasionally develop due to the pathological traits of PCOS, but its exact pathogenesis in PCOS have eluded researchers to date. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the pathogenesis and treatments of depression in PCOS. The present review discusses the epidemiology of depression in PCOS, potential pathogenic mechanisms underlying PCOS and depression, as well as some potential factors causing depression in PCOS, including obesity, insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, inflammation, and infertility. Meanwhile, some common treatment strategies for depression in PCOS, such as lifestyle intervention, acupuncture, oral contraceptive pills, psychological intervention, and insulin-sensitizer, are also reviewed. To fully understand the pathogenesis and treatment of depression in PCOS, a need remains for future large-scale multi-center randomized controlled trials and in-depth mechanism studies.
