RESUMEN

The composition of fatty acids in the muscle tissue of the unique Central Asian carp-like fish, Potanin Altai osman Oreoleuciscus potanini, was studied for the first time. The populations of these fish in the reservoirs of the semiarid zone (Durgun and Taishir) during the period of their formation are considered. It was shown that the content of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids in O. potanini corresponds to the median of this value in the order Cypriniformes. It was established that the basis of the food web of the herbivorous form of this species consists of microalgae (diatoms, Euglena and, possibly, chrysophytes), as well as bacteria. At the same time, the levels of bacterial biomarkers, 15-17BCFA and 17:0 were significantly higher in fish in the Durgun reservoir, whereas the level of EPA (diatom biomarker) in O. potanini was higher in the Taishir reservoir. The established higher values of the heavy nitrogen isotope content in the muscles of O. potanini from the Taishir reservoir are most likely associated with the yet unformed benthic communities and with the incomplete diversification of the riverine form of the Potanin Altai osman into lacustrine forms.

Lens epithelial cells (LECs) play multiple important roles in maintaining the homeostasis and normal function of the lens. LECs determine lens growth, development, size, and transparency. Conversely, dysfunctional LECs can lead to cataract formation and posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Consequently, establishing a robust primary LEC culture system is important to researchers engaged in lens development, biochemistry, cataract therapeutics, and PCO prevention. However, cultivating primary LECs has long presented challenges due to their limited availability, slow proliferation rate, and delicate nature. This study addresses these hurdles by presenting a comprehensive protocol for primary LEC culture. The protocol encompasses essential steps such as the formulation of an optimized culture medium, precise isolation of lens capsules, trypsinization techniques, subculture procedures, harvest protocols, and guidelines for storage and shipment. Throughout the culture process, cell morphology was monitored using phase-contrast microscopy. To confirm the authenticity of the cultured LECs, immunofluorescence assays were conducted to detect the presence and subcellular distribution of critical lens proteins, namely αA- and γ-crystallins. This detailed protocol equips researchers with a valuable resource for cultivating and characterizing primary LECs, enabling advancements in our comprehension of lens biology and the development of therapeutic strategies for lens-related disorders.

The emerging evidence of human infections with emerging viruses suggests their potential public health importance. A novel taxon of viruses named Statoviruses (for stool-associated Tombus-like viruses) was recently identified in the gastrointestinal tracts of multiple mammals. Here we report the discovery of respiratory Statovirus-like viruses (provisionally named Restviruses) from the respiratory tracts of five patients experiencing acute respiratory disease with Human coronavirus OC43 infection through the retrospective analysis of meta-transcriptomic data. Restviruses shared 53.1%-98.8% identities of genomic sequences with each other and 39.9%-44.3% identities with Statoviruses. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that Restviruses together with a Stato-like virus from nasal-throat swabs of Vietnamese patients with acute respiratory disease, formed a well-supported clade distinct from the taxon of Statoviruses. However, the consistent genome characteristics of Restviruses and Statoviruses suggested that they might share similar evolutionary trajectories. These findings warrant further studies to elucidate the etiological and epidemiological significance of the emerging Restviruses.

Despite slow growth of most pituitary tumors and high rates of total resection and/or effective therapy, pituitary neoplasms are characterized by aggressive behavior with high growth rate, frequent relapses and resistance to standard treatments in 10% of cases. In modern WHO classifications of tumors of the central nervous system, endocrine and neuroendocrine tumors, the authors propose the definition «pituitary neuroendocrine tumor¼ instead of previous «pituitary adenoma¼ and «metastasizing pituitary neuroendocrine tumor¼ instead of «pituitary carcinoma¼. Currently, there are no effective prognostic markers of aggressive tumors. This complicates early diagnosis. It is proposed to apply a five-stage prognostic classification based on proliferation rate (including mitotic count, Ki-67 index and p53 immunoexpression) and morphometric markers of invasiveness for all resected pituitary neoplasms. This approach would be valuable for earlier detection of aggressive tumors and pituitary carcinomas. Compression of visual pathways, third ventricle and brain stem due to rapid growth of aggressive tumors usually requires redo surgeries with subsequent radiotherapy. Hormonally active tumors require therapy with somatostatin analogues and dopamine agonists in maximum possible doses. Chemotherapy with temozolomide as first-line option is recommended if standard treatment is ineffective. Alternative treatment includes peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), molecular targeted therapy (bevacizumab, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, everolimus and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors) and immunotherapy (checkpoint inhibitors). Considering the need for combined treatment, these cases should always be discussed by a multidisciplinary team (neurosurgeon, endocrinologist, radiotherapist, oncologist, pathologist) with necessary qualifications and experience in treating these patients. Treatment of aggressive tumors and pituitary carcinomas is becoming an active and rapidly developing direction in neurosurgery, endocrinology and oncology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Numerous epidemiological studies have shown increased health risks among workers and residents living near nuclear power plants exposed to radiation levels meeting regulatory dose limits. This study aimed to evaluate the association between radiation exposure and disease risks among these populations exposed to radiation levels meeting the current regulatory dose limits. RECENT FINDINGS: We searched four databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science) for studies published before August 2023, screened eligible studies (inclusion and exclusion criteria based on population, exposure, comparator, and outcome framework), and collected data on exposure indicators and disease risks. We applied random-effects models of meta-analysis to estimate the pooled effects and meta-regression to assess the dose-response relationship (radiation dose rate for workers and distance for residents). We identified 47 studies, 13 with worker and 34 with resident samples, covering 175 nuclear power plants from 17 countries, encompassing samples of 480,623 workers and 7,530,886 residents. Workers had a significantly lower risk for all-cancer and a significantly higher risk for mesothelioma. Residents had significantly higher risks for all-cancer, thyroid cancer, and leukemia. Notably, children under 5 years old showed the highest risk for all-cancer. Our meta-regression showed a significantly positive dose-response relationship between cumulative dose of radiation exposure and risk for circulatory disease among workers. Our findings demonstrated higher risks for mesothelioma for workers and all-cancer, thyroid cancer, and leukemia for residents exposed to low-dose radiation from nuclear power plants. Some included studies did not adjust for cancer risk confounders, which could overestimate the association between radiation exposure and cancer risk and increase the risk of bias.

BACKGROUND: At present, liver transplantation (LT) is one of the best treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Accurately predicting the survival status after LT can significantly improve the survival rate after LT, and ensure the best way to make rational use of liver organs. AIM: To develop a model for predicting prognosis after LT in patients with HCC. METHODS: Clinical data and follow-up information of 160 patients with HCC who underwent LT were collected and evaluated. The expression levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin, Golgi protein 73, cytokeratin-18 epitopes M30 and M65 were measured using a fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer. The best cutoff value of biomarkers was determined using the Youden index. Cox regression analysis was used to identify the independent risk factors. A forest model was constructed using the random forest method. We evaluated the accuracy of the nomogram using the area under the curve, using the calibration curve to assess consistency. A decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the clinical utility of the nomograms. RESULTS: The total tumor diameter (TTD), vascular invasion (VI), AFP, and cytokeratin-18 epitopes M30 (CK18-M30) were identified as important risk factors for outcome after LT. The nomogram had a higher predictive accuracy than the Milan, University of California, San Francisco, and Hangzhou criteria. The calibration curve analyses indicated a good fit. The survival and recurrence-free survival (RFS) of high-risk groups were significantly lower than those of low- and middle-risk groups (P < 0.001). The DCA shows that the model has better clinical practicability. CONCLUSION: The study developed a predictive nomogram based on TTD, VI, AFP, and CK18-M30 that could accurately predict overall survival and RFS after LT. It can screen for patients with better postoperative prognosis, and improve long-term survival for LT patients.

This study investigated the effects of cyclic antimicrobial lipopeptides (CLPs) from Bacillus subtilis on the growth performance, gut morphology, and cecal gene expression and microbiota in broilers; 120 1-day-old unsexed Arbor Acres chicks were randomly divided into four groups, with six replicates in each group and five broilers per cage. These groups were fed a basal diet (C), basal diet plus 10-mg enramycin/kg (E), and basal diet plus 51-mg CLPs/kg (L) or 102-mg CLPs/kg (H). The results indicated that CLP supplementation linearly increased the body weight compared with the C group at 35 days of age. Between 15 and 35 days and 1 and 35 days of age, CLP supplementation linearly increased the average daily gain compared with the C group. The duodenal villus height was significantly increased in the H group compared with the C and E groups. In the cecum, CLP supplementation linearly increased SOD and ZO-1 mRNA expression compared with the C group. ß diversity of microbiota indicated distinct clusters between the groups. CLP supplementation linearly increased the abundance of the genus Lactobacillus in the cecal digesta compared with the C group. These results demonstrate that B. subtilis-produced CLPs dose-dependently increase broilers' growth performance, improve their gut morphology, and modulate their gut microbiota.

Transcription regulation in multicellular species is mediated by modular transcription factor (TF) binding site combinations termed cis-regulatory modules (CRMs). Such CRM-mediated transcription regulation determines the gene expression patterns during development. Biologists frequently investigate CRM transcription regulation on gene expressions. However, the knowledge of the target genes and regulatory TFs participating in the CRMs under study is mostly fragmentary throughout the literature. Researchers need to afford tremendous human resources to fully surf through the articles deposited in biomedical literature databases in order to obtain the information. Although several novel text-mining systems are now available for literature triaging, these tools do not specifically focus on CRM-related literature prescreening, failing to correctly extract the information of the CRM target genes and regulatory TFs from the literature. For this reason, we constructed a supportive auto-literature prescreener called Drosophila Modular transcription-regulation Literature Screener (DMLS) that achieves the following: (i) prescreens articles describing experiments on modular transcription regulation, (ii) identifies the described target genes and TFs of the CRMs under study for each modular transcription-regulation-describing article and (iii) features an automated and extendable pipeline to perform the task. We demonstrated that the final performance of DMLS in extracting the described target gene and regulatory TF lists of CRMs under study for given articles achieved test macro area under the ROC curve (auROC) = 89.7% and area under the precision-recall curve (auPRC) = 77.6%, outperforming the intuitive gene name-occurrence-counting method by at least 19.9% in auROC and 30.5% in auPRC. BACKGROUND: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are considered first-line medications for acute migraine attacks. However, the response exhibits considerable variability among individuals. Thus, this study aimed to explore a machine learning model based on the percentage of amplitude oscillations (PerAF) and gray matter volume (GMV) to predict the response to NSAIDs in migraine treatment. METHODS: Propensity score matching was adopted to match patients having migraine with response and nonresponse to NSAIDs, ensuring consistency in clinical characteristics and migraine-related features. Multimodal magnetic resonance imaging was employed to extract PerAF and GMV, followed by feature selection using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and recursive feature elimination algorithms. Multiple predictive models were constructed and the final model with the smallest predictive residuals was chosen. The model performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROCAUC) curve, area under the precision-recall curve (PRAUC), balance accuracy (BACC), sensitivity, F1 score, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV). External validation was performed using a public database. Then, correlation analysis was performed between the neuroimaging predictors and clinical features in migraine. RESULTS: One hundred eighteen patients with migraine (59 responders and 59 non-responders) were enrolled. Six features (PerAF of left insula and left transverse temporal gyrus; and GMV of right superior frontal gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, and left precuneus) were observed. The random forest model with the lowest predictive residuals was selected and model metrics (ROCAUC, PRAUC, BACC, sensitivity, F1 score, PPV, and NPV) in the training and testing groups were 0.982, 0.983, 0.927, 0.976, 0.930, 0.889, and 0.973; and 0.711, 0.648, 0.639, 0.667,0.649, 0.632, and 0.647, respectively. The model metrics of external validation were 0.631, 0.651, 0.611, 0.808, 0.656, 0.553, and 0.706. Additionally, a significant positive correlation was found between the GMV of the left precuneus and attack time in non-responders. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the potential of multimodal neuroimaging features in predicting the efficacy of NSAIDs in migraine treatment and provide novel insights into the neural mechanisms underlying migraine and its optimized treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how clinical features prospectively influence peer relationships in autistic populations. AIMS: This study investigated the clinical symptoms mediating the link between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis and peer relationships at follow-up, i.e. the second time evaluation of this study. METHODS: The sample consisted of 366 autistic youths and 134 non-autistic comparisons. The autistic traits and emotional/behavioral problems were measured at baseline by Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The interactions and problems with peers were assessed by the Social Adjustment Inventory for Children and Adolescents (SAICA) at follow-up. RESULTS: Each subscore of SRS and CBCL showed significant mediation effects. Multiple mediation analyses showed atypical social communication, social awareness problems, and delinquent behaviors mediated the link from ASD to less active peer interactions after controlling for sex, age, and IQ. Moreover, atypical social communication, social-emotional problems, and attention difficulties predicted problems with peers. After considering these mediation effects, the diagnosis of ASD still demonstrated a significantly direct effect on peer relationships at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Our findings support that social-related autistic features, attention problems, and delinquent behaviors mediated a link between ASD and peer relationships. These mediators are potential measures for improving interactions and decreasing difficulties with peers in the autistic population.

Significant advances in timely diagnosis and modern antitumor therapy have led to a considerable increase in the survival rate of cancer patients. On the other hand, the incidence of cardiovascular (CV) diseases and their complications is increasingly growing, including due to side effects of anticancer drugs. CV complications are the most common cause of non-oncological death of cancer patients. The development of polychemotherapy-induced arterial hypertension (AH) is closely associated with the use of certain groups of drugs, for example, inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor (iVEGF). Such AH is generally dose-dependent and reversible after interruption or termination of treatment. However, systemic AH, regardless of its genesis, is one of the key risk factors for many CV events (myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmias) and kidney disease. Therefore, thorough blood pressure monitoring and its timely and adequate correction if needed are indicated when using certain groups of chemotherapy drugs. This article describes a clinical follow-up of a patient with induced AH associated with the iVEGF antitumor therapy for advanced uterine cancer with a rapid development of left ventricular myocardial dysfunction.

By utilizing biorthogonal bases, we develop a comprehensive framework for studying biorthogonal dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems. With the help of the previously overlooked associated state, we define the automatically normalized biorthogonal Loschmidt echo. This approach is capable of handling arbitrary non-Hermitian systems with complex eigenvalues and naturally eliminates the negative value of Loschmidt rate obtained without the biorthogonal bases. Taking the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model as a concrete example, a 1/2 change of dynamical topological order parameter in biorthogonal bases is observed which is not shown in self-normal bases. Furthermore, we discover that the periodicity of biorthogonal dynamical quantum phase transitions depends on whether the two-level subsystem at the critical momentum oscillates or reaches a steady state.

Chitin is the most productive nitrogen-containing polysaccharide in nature with immense potential for transforming into a range of chemicals. However, its dense crystal structure poses a challenge for depolymerization, limiting its applications. To overcome these challenges, a novel series of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on benzyltrimethylammonium chloride (TMBAC) as the hydrogen bond acceptor was developed. These TMBAC-based DESs, in combination with lactic acid, oxalic acid, and malic acid as the hydrogen bond donor demonstrated efficient chitin dissolution, achieving a solubility of up to 12% and an 88% recovery rate of regenerated chitin. The regenerated chitin was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and 13C CP-MAS NMR, which indicated the preservation of chitin's chemical structure, a significant decrease in crystallinity, and a reduction in the molecular weight. Furthermore, the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of chitin was nearly doubled after treatment with TMBAC-based DESs, surpassing the effectiveness of untreated chitin. This approach holds promise for facilitating subsequent transformation and utilization of chitin.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the specific pharmacological molecular mechanisms of Laoke Formula (LK) on treating advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) based on clinical application, network pharmacology and experimental validation. METHODS: Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the survival benefit of Chinese medicine (CM) treatment in 296 patients with NSCLC in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital from January 2011 to December 2015. The compounds of LK were screened using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform, and the corresponding targets were performed from Swiss Target Prediction. NSCLC-related targets were obtained from Therapeutic Target Database and Comparative Toxicogenomics Database. Key compounds and targets were identified from the compound-target-disease network and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis were used to predict the potential signaling pathways involved in the treatment of advanced NSCLC with LK. The binding affinities between key ingredients and targets were further verified using molecular docking. Finally, A549 cell proliferation and migration assay were used to evaluate the antitumor activity of LK. Western blot was used to further verify the expression of key target proteins related to the predicted pathways. RESULTS: Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the overall survival of the CM group was longer than that of the non-CM group (36 months vs. 26 months), and COX regression analysis showed that LK treatment was an independent favorable prognostic factor (P=0.027). Next, 97 components and 86 potential targets were included in the network pharmacology, KEGG and GO analyses, and the results indicated that LK was associated with proliferation and apoptosis. Moreover, molecular docking revealed a good binding affinity between the key ingredients and targets. In vitro, A549 cell proliferation and migration assay showed that the biological inhibition effect was more obvious with the increase of LK concentration (P<0.05). And decreased expressions of nuclear factor κB1 (NF-κB1), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1) and increased expression of p53 (P<0.05) indicated the inhibitory effect of LK on NSCLC by Western blot. CONCLUSION: LK inhibits NSCLC by inhibiting EGFR/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling pathway, NFκB signaling pathway and inducing apoptosis, which provides evidence for the therapeutic mechanism of LK to increase overall survival in NSCLC patients.

N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) is essential for the development and migration of tumor cells. According to earlier research, N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) can increase messenger RNAs (mRNAs) stability by catalyzing the synthesis of ac4C. However, little is known about NAT10 expression and its role in the acetylation modifications in prostate cancer (PCa). Thus, the biological function of NAT10 in PCa is investigated in this study. Compared to paraneoplastic tissues, the expression of NAT10 is significantly higher in PCa. The NAT10 expression is strongly correlated with the pathological grade, clinical stage, Gleason score, T-stage, and N-stage of PCa. NAT10 has the ability to advance the cell cycle and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), both of which raise the malignancy of tumor cells. Mechanistically, NAT10 enhance the stability of high mobility group AT-hook 1 (HMGA1) by acetylating its mRNA, thereby promoting cell cycle progression to improve cell proliferation. In addition, NAT10 improve the stability of Keratin 8 (KRT8) by acetylating its mRNA, which promotes the progression of EMT to improve cell migration. This findings provide a potential prognostic or therapeutic target for PCa.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is not yet known for older diabetic patients received right ventricular pacing (RVP). We aimed to investigate the association between TyG index and the risk of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) in older diabetic patients received RVP. METHODS: This study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2018 at Fuwai Hospital, Beijing, China, and included older (age ≥ 65 years) diabetic patients that received RVP for the first time. TyG index were obtained before implantation. The primary endpoint was HFH. RESULTS: A total of 231 patients were divided into three groups according to the tertiles of TyG index: < 8.5 (T1, N = 77), 8.5-9.1 (T2, N = 77), and > 9.1 (T3, N = 77). T3 group had higher rate of HFH (Log-rank = 11.7, P = 0.003). Multivariate analyses showed that, TyG index served as an independent predictor for HFH, both as numerical variable (HR = 1.94, 95% CI 1.21-3.11, P = 0.006), and as categorical variable (HR = 2.31, 95% CI 1.09-4.89, P = 0.03). RCS demonstrated that the risk of HFH was relatively low until TyG index exceeded 8.8, beyond which the risk began to increase rapidly (P-non-linear = 0.006). CONCLUSION: Preimplantation TyG index emerges as a robust, independent predictor for HFH in older diabetic patients received RVP, and TyG index > 8.8 might be the optimal cut-off value.

Climate change and formation of regional weather features increase both direct (immediate effects of extremal temperature and other weather and climatic anomalies) and indirect (environmental deterioration, etc.) consequences of global climate change. The development of investigations of medical weather assessment, medical and meteorological forecasting system, the use of treatment and preventive measures give the opportunity to prepare for weather biotropic conditions and reduce weather-conditioned exacerbations. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical effectiveness of non-drug comprehensive methods, including balneotherapy and physiotherapy, in patients with somatic diseases, complicated by increased meteosensitivity, depending on the features of weather conditions in the Moscow region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 120 patients diagnosed with «osteoarthrosis/osteoarthritis¼ with predominant hip and knee joint damage. The majority of patients had comorbidities, namely hypertensive disease (67.2%), ischemic heart disease (32.8%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma (10.8%), grade II-III obesity (10%) and compensated diabetes mellitus (9.2%). The severity and main symptoms of the meteopathic reactions' manifestation were assessed by questionnaires consisting of three blocks, HAM, SF-36 tests and psychological stress scale. Medical and meteorological assessment of weather conditions in Moscow included analysis of the main weather-forming factors for 4 main synoptic observations in 10-minute mode for current and predictive 2 days, as well as daily characteristics of solar activity. Treatment methods included alternating magnetic field (AMF) procedures, general sodium chloride baths, massage and rehabilitation exercises (RE) (1st group); AMF, «dry¼ carbon dioxide baths, applications with brine on the affected joints and RE (2nd group); AMF, «dry¼ radon baths, applications with brine and RE (3rd group). RESULTS: The conducted studies have revealed the trigger role of most biotropic combinations of weather-forming factors that provoke exacerbation in patients with joint diseases. Sodium chloride, «dry¼ carbon dioxide and radon baths combined with AMF, applications with brine on the affected joints and RE are pathogenetically justified and contribute to increase of adaptive potential, functional reserves of the body and provide significantly high (p<0.05) meteocorrective action. CONCLUSION: The obtained results can be used for rehabilitation of patients with joint diseases complicated by increased meteosensitivity.

Electrochemical profiling of formaldehyde-inactivated poliovirus particles demonstrated a relationship between the D-antigen concentration and the intensity of the maximum amplitude currents of the poliovirus samples. The resultant signal was therefore identified as electrochemical oxidation of the surface proteins of the poliovirus. Using registration of electrooxidation of amino acid residues of the capsid proteins, a comparative electrochemical analysis of poliovirus particles inactivated by electrons accelerated with doses of 5 kGy, 10 kGy, 15 kGy, 25 kGy, 30 kGy at room temperature was carried out. An increase in the radiation dose was accompanied by an increase in electrooxidation signals. A significant increase in the signals of electrooxidation of poliovirus capsid proteins was detected upon irradiation at doses of 15-30 kGy. The data obtained suggest that the change in the profile and increase in the electrooxidation signals of poliovirus capsid proteins are associated with an increase in the degree of structural reorganization of surface proteins and insufficient preservation of the D-antigen under these conditions of poliovirus inactivation.

The development of views on cerebral activation in the wakefulness-sleep cycle, starting with the work of Constantin von Economo, is considered. The emphasis is on the cyclic activation of high-amplitude discharges in sleep, which, with known assumptions, can include K-complexes, as well as patterns of delta-like waves. Considering the participation of the peripheral nervous system in this, the integrative role of cyclic activation of high-amplitude discharges in the organization of the sleep-wake cycle is discussed.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with potential in biomedical applications such as sensing, drug delivery, and radiosensitization. However, how to tune the properties of the MOFs for such applications remains challenging. Herein, we synthesized two MOFs, Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB. Zr-PEB can be classified as porous interpenetrated zirconium frameworks (PIZOFs) and Hf-PEB is its analogue. We controlled their sizes while maintaining their crystal structure by employing a coordination modulation strategy. They were designed to serve as sensitizer for X-ray therapy and as potential drug carriers. Comprehensive characterizations of the MOFs' properties have been conducted, and the in vitro biological impacts have been studied. Since viability assay showed that Hf-PEB was more biocompatible compared to Zr-PEB, the cellular uptake of Hf-PEB by cells was evaluated using both fluorescence microscopy and soft X-ray tomography (SXT), and the three-dimensional structure of Hf-PEB in cells was observed. The results revealed the potential of Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB as nanomaterials for biomedical applications and demonstrated that SXT is an effective tool to assist the development of such materials.
