RESUMEN

INTRODUCTIONWhilst only 5.5% to 7% of breast cancer occurs in women less than 40 years of age in the West, the incidence has been reported in up to 18% in Asian population. This study seeks to evaluate our unit's experience in breast cancer in young women.

MATERIALS AND METHODSA retrospective review of our database identified women with newly diagnosed breast cancer from January 2006 to February 2011. Patient demographics, clinical presentation, imaging and pathological findings and treatment received were determined.

RESULTSOut of a total of 1160 women with breast cancer, 135 (11.6%) were under 40 years of age and made up our study population. The most common presentation was a self-detected breast lump. Most patients did not have a positive family history. Mammography demonstrated abnormal findings in 78% of patients. Ultrasound was very sensitive in the evaluation of a breast lump and demonstrated abnormal findings in 95%. Out of 129 women, 40 (31%) underwent breast-conserving surgery of which 5 (12.5%) proceeded to mastectomy due to involved margins. Also, 89 out of 129 women (69%) underwent mastectomy of which 19 (21.3%) had immediate reconstruction. Of a total of 121 primary resections, 94% were invasive ductal carcinoma while 15.5% were pure ductal in-situ carcinomas. The majority (61.2%) showed high grade disease.

CONCLUSIONMost young breast cancer patients present with a self-detected breast lump and do not have a positive family history. A strong clinical index of suspicion and appropriate breast imaging workup are useful for the early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer in young women.

RESUMEN

Inorganic-organic hybrid nanostructures doped with magnetic ions have been synthesized via substitution of Zn by Co or Fe in the ZnSe(L)0.5 systems under solvothermal conditions. These dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS), Zn(1-x)MxSe(L)0.5 (M = Co, Fe; L = ethylenediamine or en, 1,3-propanediamine or pda; 0 < x < 1), are composed of perfectly ordered Zn(1-x)MxSe semiconductor monolayers interconnected by organic diamine molecules. The large blue shifts in their optical absorption edges (approximately 1.1-1.5 eV) compared to the bulk ZnSe are a direct result of a very strong quantum confinement effect (QCE). Magnetic studies show that there exist antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co or Fe centers in the structures and the interaction is enhanced as the doping concentration increases. The introduction of Fe or Co to hybrid inorganic-organic semiconductors provides a promising route to generate materials that combine the advantageous features of inorganic, organic, and magnetic functionalities in a single structure.

RESUMEN

A three-dimensional coordination polymer, [Mn3(OH)2Na2(3-cnba)6]n (1) (3-Hcnba = 3-cyanobenzoic acid), has been synthesized by the reaction of MnCl2, NaN3, and 3-Hcnba in water. Its crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Magnetic studies show that the complex behaves as a three-dimensional metamagnet built from effective ferrimagnetic Mn(II) chains in which spin moments are linked by interactions in an AF-F-AF (F = ferromagnetic and AF = antiferromagnetic) sequence in the triangular magnetic repeating unit.

RESUMEN

Haplotype frequencies of nine Y-chromosome STR loci (DYS19, DYS385, DYS388, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392 and DYS393) in the Taiwanese Han population were established. A total of 183 unrelated individuals produced 162 haplotypes, of which 146 were unique, 1 was found in 5 individuals, 2 were found in 3 individuals and 13 were found in 2 individuals. The haplotype diversity (99.99%) and discrimination capacity (88.5%) were calculated. A family study of 109 father/son pairs in 100 families showed 2 mutational events in the DYS389II locus and 1 in the DYS392 locus.

RESUMEN

A novel coordination polymer of mixed-valence copper(I,II) with 4,4'-bipyridine and in situ oxidized isophthalate, [Cu2(ipO)(4,4'-bpy)] (ipOH = 2-hydroxyisophthalate), was hydrothermally synthesized and crystallographically characterized to be a laminated structure via weak copper(II)--oxygen interactions.

RESUMEN

Controlled synthesis of transition metal complexes with mixed ligands has led to two new compounds with the same empirical formula [Fe(N3)2(4,4'-bpy)] (4,4'-bpy=4,4'- bipyridine). The compound 2D-[Fe(N3)2(4,4'-bpy)] (I) contains end-on (EO) bridging azido ligands. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system, space group Cmmm (No. 65): a=11.444(2) A, b=15.181(3) A, c=3.458(1) A, V=600.8(2) A(3), and Z=2. The compound 3D-[Fe(N3)2(4,4'-bpy)] (II) contains end-to-end (EE) azido bridges. It belongs to the tetragonal crystal system, space group P4(1)2(1)2 (No. 92): a=8.132(1) A, b=8.132(1) A, c=16.708(3) A, V=1104.9(5) A(3), and Z=4. Crystals of I and II have been grown by the diffusion method. Phase-pure samples of both compounds have been obtained by means of an optimal solution synthesis. Spontaneous long-range magnetic ordering was found in both I and II, with I being a metamagnet, and II being a ferromagnet. For I, in the low-field region, multiple transitions at TN1=20 K and TN2=5 K were observed, and these indicated the existence of Fe moment reorientation. Heat capacity measurements on II confirmed ferromagnetic transition at TC=20 K.
