PURPOSE: The characteristics of surface-based morphological patterns to primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) are still not well understood. This study aims to screen the useful cortical indices for the prediction of PTN and the quantification of pain severity. METHODS: Fifty PTN patients and 48 matched healthy subjects enrolled in the study from March 2016 to August 2021. High-resolution T1 data were performed at 3.0 Tesla scanner and were analyzed with FreeSurfer software to detect the abnormalities of cortical mean curve (CMC), cortical thickness (CT), surface area (SA), and cortical volume (CV) in PTN patients compared to healthy controls. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine whether certain morphological patterns could predict PTN disorder. Then, the relationships of cortical indices to the pain characteristics in patient group were examined using linear regression model. RESULTS: Distinctive cortical alterations were discovered through surface-based analysis, including increased temporal CMC, decreased insular CT and fusiform SA, along with decreased CV in several temporal and occipital areas. Moreover, the difference of temporal CMC was greater than other cortical parameters between the two groups, and the combination of certain morphological indices was of good value in the diagnosis for PTN. Besides, CT of left insula was negatively associated with the pain intensity in PTN patients. CONCLUSION: The patients with PTN demonstrate distinctive morphological patterns in several cortical regions, which may contribute to the imaging diagnosis of this refractory disorder and be useful for the quantification of the orofacial pain. Female ovaries degenerate about 20 years earlier than testes leading to reduced primordial follicle reserve and a reduction in oocyte quality. Here we found that bridge integrator 2 (BIN2) is enriched in mouse ovaries and oocytes and that global knockout of this protein improves both female fertility and oocyte quality. Quantitative ovarian proteomics and phosphoproteomics showed that Bin2 knockout led to a decrease in phosphorylated ribosomal protein S6 (p-RPS6), a component of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway and greatly increased nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT), the free-radical detoxifier. Mechanistically, we find that phosphorylation of BIN2 at Thr423 and Ser424 leads to its translocation from the membrane to the cytoplasm, subsequent phosphorylation of RPS6 and inhibition of Nnt translation. We synthesized a BIN2-penetrating peptide (BPP) designed to inhibit BIN2 phosphorylation and found that a 3-week BPP treatment improved primordial follicle reserve and oocyte quality in aging and after chemotherapy-induced premature ovarian failure without discernible side effects.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a major severe ovary disorder affecting 5-10% of reproductive women around the world. PCOS can be considered a metabolic disease because it is often accompanied by obesity and diabetes. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) contains abundant mitochondria and adipokines and has been proven to be effective for treating various metabolic diseases. Recently, allotransplanted BAT successfully recovered the ovarian function of PCOS rat. However, BAT allotransplantation could not be applied to human PCOS; the most potent BAT is from infants, so voluntary donors are almost inaccessible. We recently reported that single BAT xenotransplantation significantly prolonged the fertility of aging mice and did not cause obvious immunorejection. However, PCOS individuals have distinct physiologies from aging mice; thus, it remains essential to study whether xenotransplanted rat BAT can be used for treating PCOS mice. In this study, rat-to-mouse BAT xenotransplantation, fortunately, did not cause severe rejection reaction, and significantly recovered ovarian functions, indicated by the recovery of fertility, oocyte quality, and the levels of multiple essential genes and kinases. Besides, the blood biochemical index, glucose resistance, and insulin resistance were improved. Moreover, transcriptome analysis showed that the recovered PCOS F0 mother following BAT xenotransplantation could also benefit the F1 generation. Finally, BAT xenotransplantation corrected characteristic gene expression abnormalities found in the ovaries of human PCOS patients. These findings suggest that BAT xenotransplantation could be a novel therapeutic strategy for treating PCOS patients.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the roles of integral membrane proteins beyond channels, carriers or receptors in meiotic oocytes. The transmembrane protein Fam70A was previously identified as a likely "female fertility factor" in Fox3a-knockout mouse ovaries where almost all follicles underwent synchronous activation and the mice became infertile very early. However, whether Fam70A functions in oocyte meiosis remains unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to address this question. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Co-immunoprecipitation, immunogold labelling-electron microscopy, co-localization and yeast two-hybrid assays were used to verify the interaction. Antibody or small interfering RNA transfection was used to deplete the proteins. Immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and live tracker staining were used to examine the localization or characterize phenotypes. Western blot was used to examine the protein level. RESULTS: Fam70A was enriched in oocyte membranes important for normal meiosis. Fam70A depletion remarkably disrupted spindle assembly, chromosome congression and first polar body extrusion, which subsequently increased aneuploidy and abnormal fertilization. Moreover, Fam70A directly bound Wnt5a, the most abundant Wnt member within oocytes. Depletion of either Fam70A or Wnt5a remarkably increased adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), which stabilizes active ß-catenin and microtubules. Consequently, depletion of either Fam70A or Wnt5a remarkably increased p-ß-catenin (inactive form) and acetylated tubulin, while APC knockdown remarkably decreased these two. Furthermore, Fam70A depletion remarkably reduced Akt phosphorylation. CONCLUSIONS: Fam70A regulates meiosis and quality of mouse oocytes through both canonical and non-canonical Wnt5a signalling pathways.

OBJECTIVES: M-phase phosphoprotein 6 (MPP6) is important for 5.8S pre-rRNA maturation in somatic cells and was screened as a female fertility factor. However, whether MPP6 functions in oocyte meiosis and fertility is not yet known. We aimed to address this. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mouse oocytes with surrounded nucleus (SN) or non-surrounded nucleus (NSN) were used for all experiments. Peptide nanoparticle-mediated antibody transfection was used to deplete MPP6. Immunofluorescence staining, immunohistochemistry and live tracker staining were used to examine MPP6 localization and characterize phenotypes after control or MPP6 depletion. High-fidelity PCR and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to examine the localization and level of 5.8S rRNAs. Western blot was used to examine the protein level. MPP6-EGFP mRNA microinjection was used to do the rescue. RESULTS: MPP6 was enriched within ovaries and oocytes. MPP6 depletion significantly impeded oocyte meiosis. MPP6 depletion increased 5.8S pre-rRNA. The mRNA levels of MPP6 and 5.8S rRNA decreased within ageing oocytes, and MPP6 mRNA injection partially increased 5.8S rRNA maturation and improved oocyte quality. CONCLUSIONS: MPP6 is required for 5.8S rRNA maturation, meiosis and quality control in mouse oocytes, and MPP6 level might be a marker for oocyte quality.

Tight control of energy metabolism is essential for normal cell function and organism survival. PKM (pyruvate kinase, muscle) isoforms 1 and 2 originate from alternative splicing of PKM pre-mRNA. They are key enzymes in oxidative phosphorylation and aerobic glycolysis, respectively, and are essential for ATP generation. The PKM1:PKM2 expression ratio changes with development and differentiation, and may also vary under metabolic stress and other conditions. Until now, there have been no reports about the function and regulation of PKM isozymes in oocytes. Here, we demonstrate that PKM1 or PKM2 depletion significantly disrupts ATP levels and mitochondrial integrity, and exacerbates free-radical generation and apoptosis in mouse oocytes. We also show that KBTBD8, a female fertility factor in the KBTBD ubiquitin ligase family, selectively regulates PKM1 levels through a signaling cascade that includes Erk1/2 and Aurora A kinases as intermediates. Finally, using RNA sequencing and protein network analysis, we identify several regulatory proteins that may be govern generation of mature PKM1 mRNA. These results suggest KBTBD8 affects PKM1 levels in oocytes via a KBTBD8→Erk1/2→Aurora A axis, and may also affect other essential processes involved in maintaining oocyte quality.

Down-regulation of the miRNA miR-338-3p correlates with the invasive ability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. However, it is currently unclear whether down-regulation of miR-338-3p induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which may be the underlying mechanism governing HCC invasion. Here, we demonstrate that restoration of miR-338-3p expression via transfection of a miR-338-3p mimic reversed EMT and inhibited the motility and invasiveness of HCC cells. Conversely, silencing of endogenous miR-338-3p expression with a miR-338-3p-specific inhibitor induced EMT and enhanced HCC cell motility. Additionally, Snail1 (an upstream regulatory protein of EMT) and Gli1 (a key transcription factor in the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway) expression was up-regulated in cells treated with the miR-338-3p inhibitor and down-regulated by the miR-338-3p mimic. Further analyses demonstrated that miR-338-3p inhibitor-induced EMT in HCC cells was blocked by treatment with a small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting Snail1, that the SHH signaling pathway was required for both miR-338-3p inhibitor-induced EMT and up-regulation of Snail1, and that miR-338-3p targeted a sequence within the 3'-untranslated region of N-cadherin mRNA. Notably, miR-338-3p expression was significantly down-regulated in HCC samples from patients with metastases and was associated with poor metastasis-free survival rates. Lastly, correlations between the expression levels of miR-338-3p and E-cadherin, Smoothened (SMO), Gli1, Snail1, N-cadherin, and vimentin were confirmed in HCC xenograft tumors and HCC patient specimens. Our findings suggest that miR-338-3p suppresses EMT and metastasis via both inhibition of the SHH/Gli1 pathway and direct binding of N-cadherin. miR-338-3p is a potential therapeutic target for metastatic HCC.

MicroRNA-24 (miR-24), a member of the miRNA family, functions as an oncogene in various types of human cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms of miR-24 involvement in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain poorly understood. The present study revealed that miRNA-24 down-regulates p53 through binding to the 3'-UTR of p53 mRNA based on a luciferase reporter assay, and that the expression level of miR-24 could affect the invasion of HCC lines via p53. Down-regulation of p53 significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of miR-24 knockdown on the invasion of HCC cells, suggesting that miR-24 could be a potential target for HCC treatment. Moreover, our results revealed that miR-24 expression was significantly increased in HCC metastatic tumor tissues compared with matched non-metastatic tumor tissues, and that the up-regulation of miR-24 was significantly associated with down-regulation of p53 in the HCC tissues. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that miR-24 functions as an oncogene in HCC, at least partly by promoting cell invasion through down-regulation of p53. Therefore, miR-24 may be a potential therapeutic target for treatment of HCC.

MiR-129-5p is deregulated in various human cancers and has been associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. However, the underlying mechanisms of miR-129-5p involvement in the development and progression of HCC and the effects of miR-129-5p deregulation on the clinical characteristics observed in HCC patients remain poorly understood. We therefore investigated the correlation between low miR-129-5p expression and vascular invasion, intrahepatic metastasis, and poor patient survival. Ectopic restoration of miR-129-5p expression in HCC cells suppressed cellular migration and invasion and the expression of v-ets erythroblastosis virus E26 oncogene homolog 1 (ETS1), while inhibition of endogenous miR-129-5p caused an increase in these parameters. We identified the ETS1 gene as a novel direct target of miR-129-5p. SiRNA-mediated ETS1 knockdown rescued the effects of anti-miR-129-5p inhibitor in HCC cell lines, while the effects of miR-129-5p overexpression were partially phenocopied in the knockdown model. In addition, miR-129-5p levels inversely correlated with those of ETS1 in HCC cells and tissues. Taken together, our findings indicate an important role for miR-129-5p in the molecular etiology of invasive HCC and suggest that miR-129-5p could have potential therapeutic applications in HCC.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in HCC progression and their correlation with clinicopathological factors as well as the relationship between their expression levels. The expression of serum VEGF and MIF was evaluated in 150 patients with HCC and in 30 normal volunteers by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). VEGF and MIF expression levels were evaluated by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays containing 150 HCCs with paired adjacent non-cancer liver tissues. VEGF and MIF mRNA levels were determined by quantitative PCR in another 48 HCCs. The correlation of VEGF and MIF with clinicopathological factors was analyzed in HCC. Serum VEGF and MIF concentrations were higher in HCC patients than the levels in the controls. The expression levels of VEGF and MIF in the HCC tissues were both higher than those in the adjacent non-tumor liver tissues. Overexpression of VEGF and MIF was significantly associated with tumor size (P=0.027 and 0.022, respectively), intrahepatic metastasis (P=0.032 and 0.027, respectively), vascular invasion (P=0.044 and 0.039, respectively) and TNM stage (P=0.028 and 0.013, respectively). Furthermore, VEGF and MIF mRNA levels were higher in HCC compared to levels in the paired non-cancer liver tissues. VEGF and MIF mRNA levels were correlated with tumor stage and metastasis. The expression of VEGF was positively related with MIF expression in HCC. The expression of MIF and VEGF in HCC was markedly positively correlated, which suggests that MIF and VEGF play an important role in the progression of HCC. Both factors may concomitantly accelerate the progression of HCC.

AIM: miR-145 is a candidate tumor suppressor miRNA. However, it is unknown whether miR-145 is involved in the invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, we aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of miR-145 in the control of HCC cell invasion. METHODS: HCC cell invasion was evaluated by transwell assays after transfection with pre-miR-145 or anti-miR-145. A luciferase reporter assay was used to determine whether a disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 (ADAM17) were a target of miR-145. The levels of miR-145 and ADAM17 mRNA were detected by a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay, and the level of ADAM17 protein was measured by western blot analysis. Pearson's correlation test was used to assess the correlation between ADAM17 mRNA expression and miR-145 expression in 20 HCC tissue samples. RESULTS: miR-145 was significantly downregulated in HCC tissues and cell lines. The loss of miR-145 expression was associated with the tumor-node-metastasis stage, vascular invasion and intrahepatic metastasis. The overexpression of miR-145 was able to suppress tumor MHCC-97H cell invasion, whereas the knockdown of miR-145 expression induced SMMC-7721 cell invasion. We demonstrated that miR-145 bound directly to the 3'-untranslated region of ADAM17 and inhibited the expression of ADAM17. The knockdown of ADAM17 in SMMC-7721 cells could partially reverse the effects of anti-miR-145. miR-145 expression was inversely associated with ADAM17 expression in 20 HCC tissue specimens. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that miR-145 could inhibit HCC cell invasion by regulating the expression of ADAM17.

MicroRNAs are involved in human carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Our previous study has shown that loss of miR-338-3p expression is associated with clinical aggressiveness of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the exact roles and mechanisms of miR-338-3p remain unknown in HCC. To determine whether and how miR-338-3p influences liver cancer cell invasion, we studied miR-338-3p in the liver cancer cell lines, and we found that miR-338-3p is down-regulated in treated cells. Forced expression of miR-338-3p in SK-HEP-1 cells suppressed cell migration and invasion, whereas inhibition of miR-338-3p in SMMC-7721 cells induced cell migration and invasion. Furthermore, smoothened (SMO) was identified as a direct target of miR-338-3p. Forced expression of miR-338-3p down-regulated SMO and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 expression, but inhibition of miR-338-3p up-regulated SMO and MMP9 expression. However, small interfering RNA targeted SMO reversed the effects induced by blockade of miR-338-3p. SMO and MMP9 were overexpressed and associated with invasion and metastasis in HCC tissues. These data indicate that miR-338-3p suppresses cell invasion by targeting the smoothened gene in liver cancer in vitro and miR-338-3p might be a novel potential strategy for liver cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of BK virus associated nephropathy (BKVAN) in renal-transplantation recipients, observe its histological features. METHODS: A total of 137 renal allograft biopsy specimens collected at our hospital during December 1999 to January 2008 were analyzed by routine histologic examination, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to screen for BKV. The case records of involved recipients were accessed to know their clinical manifestations, diagnostic characteristic and treatment regimens at that time. And the 1-, 3-year graft survival rate were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: A total of 16 renal biopsy specimens (11.7%) were positive for BKV. Viral particales on the size of 35 - 40 nm were seen in the tubular epithelial cells of 3 biopsy specimens and 7 urinary sediment samples. The numbers of BKVAN recipients suffering acute rejection, using ALG/ATG/OKT3 and using FK506+MMF immunosuppressive protocol were 7, 7 and 10 respectively. In 14 cases of BKVAN, there was an elevated level of serum creatine concentrations. Four cases lost their grafts after using a large dose of immunosuppressives. And renal functions improved by a reduction of immunosuppression or a replacement of FK506 with CsA in 8 cases. And graft functions deteriorated or had already failed in the remaining 4 cases whose immunosuppressive protocol were not changed. The 1-, 3-year graft survival rates were 81.3% and 54.2% in BKVAN recipients respectively. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of BKVAN should be considered in recipients when their graft functions are deteriorating, especially for those with the accompanied risk factors. The morphological hallmarks of BKVAN are similar to those of acute rejection. The differentiation may be made by either immunohistochemistry or TEM. A proper modification of maintenance immunosuppression is effective in slowing down the progression of BKVAN.

BACKGROUND: BK virus (BKV)-associated nephropathy (BKVAN) in renal transplant recipients is an important cause of renal transplant dysfunction. Our aim was to determine the kinetics of BKV load within one yr after kidney transplantation under the impact of intensive monitoring and reduction in maintenance immunosuppression, the incidence of BKVAN, and the outcome of BKVAN treatment. METHODS: Urine and peripheral blood (PB) were taken from 90 renal transplant recipients for BKV cytological testing and real-time PCR for BKV DNA at one, three, six, nine, and 12 months after transplantation and treatment. Graft biopsies and urinary sediments of recipients with BKVAN were taken to monitor viral particles by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS: By one post-transplant year, urinary decoy cells (median, 8/10 HPF), BKV viruria (median, 2.60 × 10(5) copies/mL), viremia (median, 9.65 × 10(3) copies/mL), and BKVAN occurred in 42.2%, 45.6%, 22.2%, and 5.6% of patients, respectively. The incidence of BK infection was lower in patients who received cyclosporine A (CsA) (28.9%) compared to tacrolimus (FK506) (57.7%) (p = 0.007). An increased hazard of BK infection was associated with the use of FK506 (HR 2.6, p = 0.009) relative to CsA. After reduction in immunosuppression, viremia resolved in 95%, without increased acute rejection, allograft dysfunction, or graft loss. BKVAN was diagnosed in five patients (5.6%). The treatment of immunosuppression reduction was effective (i.e., decreased the viral load and number of decoy cells, and improved graft function) in our five patients with BKVAN. Quantitative count of decoy cells (e.g., >10 per 10 HPF) as a marker of viremia and BKVAN had increased positive predictive values of 85.7% and 57.1%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Choice of FK506 as immunosuppressive agent is an independent risk factor affecting BKV infection. Monitoring and pre-emptive of immunosuppression reduction were associated with resolution of viremia and showed effective in BKVAN recipients at the early stage without acute rejection or graft loss. Quantitative count of urine cytology is a very convenient, useful, and sensitive method for evaluating BKV infection in renal transplant recipients.

AIM: Recent studies have underlined causative links between microRNA (miRNA) deregulation and cancer development. However, the relevance of abnormally expressed miRNA to tumor biology has not been well understood in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A bead-based miRNA expression profiling method was performed on 20 pairs of surgically removed HCC and adjacent non-tumorous tissue (NT). Special miR-338 downregulations and miR-338 associated with clinical characteristics was validated in an extended samples set of 36 paired HCC and adjacent non-tumorous liver tissues by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. RESULTS: Out of our bead-based microarray data, 12 upregulated and 19 downregulated miRNA were found to be associated with HCC. Further characterization of miRNA-338, in which 20 pairs of the samples were clustered clearly into two groups according to expression of miR-338, revealed that the level of miR-338 expression can be associated with clinical aggressiveness, such as, tumor size, tumor-node-metastasis stage, vascular invasion and intrahepatic metastasis. These results were validated by real-time RT-PCR analysis. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that miRNA expression could have relevance to the clinical behavior of HCC and that the bead-based miRNA expression profiling method might be a suitable system to assay miRNA expression in large-scale diagnostic trails.

OBJECTIVE: To explore methods of clinical diagnosis and treatment of BK virus (BKV) infection in renal transplant recipients. METHODS: Urine samples were collected from 227 renal transplant recipients who had undergone renal transplantation at most 48 months to detect the decoy cells. Samples of urine and peripheral blood (BP) were collected to undergo real-time PCR to detect the BKV DNA. Part of the renal-recipients received graft biopsy. The recipients with BKV viruria or viremia were divided into 2 groups: intervention group and control group. The 51 patients of the intervention group had the doses of cyclosporine A (CsA) reduced (n=19), had their doses of FK506 reduced (n=22), or underwent replacement of FK506 with CsA (n=10). And other 29 patients in the control group did not receive any intervention. Acute rejection was intensively monitored. The amount of decoy cells, and BKV load in the urine and PB samples were measured again after 3 months. RESULTS: The positive rates of urine decoy cell, BKV viruria, and viremia in all patients were 33.0%, 33.5%, and 15.4% respectively. In the intervention group, the median levels of decoy cells in urine, and of BKV DNA in urine and PB before intervention were 5.0/10 HP, 1.50 x 10(4) copies/ml and 0 copy/ml respectively ; and the median levels of decoy cell in urine, and of BKV DNA in urine and PB were all 0 after intervention, all significantly lower than those before intervention (all P < 0.01). In the control group, the median levels of decoy cells in urine, and of BKV DNA in urine and PB were 6.0 /10 HP, 0.79 x 10(4) copies/ml, and 0 copy/ml respectively before observation, and the median level of BKV load in urine ofter observation was 2.21 x 10(4) copies/m, significantly higher than that before observation (P < 0.01), however, the median levels of decoy cells in urine and of BKV DNA in PB were 5.0 /10 HP and 0 copy/ml respectively, not significantly different from those before observation ( both P > 0.05). The differences between the levels of urine decoy cells, urine BKV DNA level and blood BKV DNA level of the intervention group were all significantly greater than those of the control group (Z = -2.749, -5.089, -1.996; P = 0.006, 0.000, 0.046 respectively). And during the intervention no acute rejection was observed. Four cases of BKVAN were diagnosed. Treatment of immunosuppression reduction showed effectiveness in 4 BKVAN recipients. The levels of decoy cells in urine, and BKV load in urine and in PB samples were all decreased. The graft functions were improved. CONCLUSION: Urine cytology is very convenient, useful and sensitive for the evaluation and followup of renal transplant patients, and can reflect renal histological presentation indirectly. Also BKV DNA detection in the urine and peripheral blood is important to screen the evidence of BK reaction in order to prevent irreversible graft damage of BKVAN. The treatment of immunosuppressant reduction and replacement of FK506 with CsA are effective in BKV infection recipients at the early stage.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical diagnosis of BK virus (BKV) infection in renal transplant recipients. METHODS: Urine and peripheral blood samples were taken from 234 renal transplant recipients for BKV detection with cytological test and real-time PCR. RESULTS: The occurrence rate of urine decoy cells, BKV viruria and viremia in these patients was 33.3 %, 33.3% and 16.2%, respectively, and the median level of urine decoy cells was 6/10 HPF, with the median level of urine and peripheral blood BKV of 7.62 x 10(3) copy/ml and 7.61 x 10(3) copy/ml, respectively. The positivity rate of BKV in the urine samples were significantly higher than that in peripheral blood samples (P=0.000). The amount of decoy cells was related to BKV load in the urine samples (gamma=0.59, P=0.000), but the BKV load in the urine samples was not related to that in peripheral blood samples (P=0.14). CONCLUSION: Renal transplantation is associated with increased BKV shedding, indicating the necessity of BKV monitoring in renal transplant recipients with urine cytology, which is convenient and sensitive and indicates renal histological changes indirectly. Urine and peripheral blood BKV DNA detection is of value in identifying BKV activation to prevent irreversible graft damage of BKV-associated nephropathy.
