Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1), a monomer saponin component, is one of the components with the highest content in total saponins of Panaxnotoginseng. It had various pharmacological effects. The bioavailability of oral tablets is only 1-20 %, and it is eliminated quickly in the blood. The development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1 with sustained release and high bioavailability has become a significant problem to be solved. The Rg1 liposomes study used a thin film dispersion ultrasound method for its preparation. This study focused the pharmacokinetic parameters of ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes in rats through the lung perfusion method. Ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes were round and uniform in shape, the particle size was 2-3 µm, and the encapsulation efficiency of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome was 51.2 %. Results showed that, after pulmonary administration of ginsenoside Rg1, the time of ginsenoside Rg1 detected by Rg1 liposomes was longer than that of Rg1 solution, the relative bioavailability of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome lung administration AUC liposome/AUC solution = 122.67 %. These results provided the scientific theoretical and experimental basis for further development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1.

This study addresses a crucial challenge in two-dimensional (2D) material-based electronic devices-inefficient heat dissipation across the van der Waals (vdW) interface connecting the 2D material to its three-dimensional (3D) substrate. The objective is to enhance the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) of 2D/3D heterostructures without compromising the intrinsic thermal conductivities (κ) of 2D materials. Using 2D-MoS2/3D-GaN as an example, a novel strategy to enhance both the ITC across 2D/3D interface and κ of 2D material is proposed by introducing a controlled concentration (ρ) of vacancy defects to substrate's bottom surface. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate a notable 2.1-fold higher ITC of MoS2/GaN at ρ = 4% compared to the no-defective counterpart, along with an impressive 56% enhancement in κ of MoS2 compared to the conventional upper surface modification approaches. Phonon dynamics analysis attributes the ITC enhancement to increased phonon coupling between MoS2 and GaN, resulting from polarization conversion and hybridization of phonons at the defective surface. Spectral energy density analysis affirms that the improved κ of MoS2 directly results from the proposed strategy, effectively reducing phonon scattering at the interface. This work provides an effective approach for enhancing heat transfer in 2D/3D vdW heterostructures, promisingly advancing electronics' heat dissipation.

OBJECTIVE: The integration of curriculum is an important approach for enhancing medical education and facilitating interdisciplinary connections among students. This study aimed to develop a new morphological integrated teaching mode for undergraduate stomatology education by combining stomatological pathology and radiology courses with instructional media. METHODS: In total, 63 undergraduates were included in this study and divided into three groups: traditional (Group T; the control group) and two experimental groups: KoPa WiFi EDU (Group K), and KoPa WiFi EDU-cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) (Group K-C). All participants attended a 2-h lecture on periapical cysts and completed the first theoretical test. Subsequently, they underwent a 4-h experimental training session on the pathology and radiology of periapical cysts using different teaching methods. Following the training, participants completed the second theoretical test and underwent the first image-reading skill evaluation. After a 3-month period, participants completed the third theoretical test and underwent the second image-reading skill evaluation. The effectiveness of the teaching methods was assessed by analyzing the differences in theoretical test and experimental skill evaluation scores. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the first theoretical outcomes among three groups (p > 0.05). However, the second theoretical scores, the first objective evaluation scores, and the first subjective evaluation scores were significantly higher in the integrated teaching mode (3D teaching mode with the KoPa WiFi EDU and CBCT: 89.29 ± 4.55, 81.00 ± 8.15, and 61.57 ± 5.52, respectively; 2D teaching mode with the KoPa WiFi EDU system: 80.43 ± 3.41, 73.00 ± 8.01, and 55.67 ± 5.66, respectively) than in the traditional teaching mode (72.57 ± 3.84, 69.38 ± 4.91, and 48.67 ± 5.54, respectively) (p < 0.05). Moreover, the long-term teaching effect of the integrated mode was better than that of the traditional mode (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The morphology-based integrated teaching mode combining pathology and radiology aroused student enthusiasm for learning, and resulted in enhanced learning outcomes in dental experimental education.

Competitive opinion maximization (COM) aims to determine some individuals (i.e., seed nodes) from social networks, propagating the desired opinions toward a target entity to their neighbors through social relationships when facing with its competitors (components) and maximize the opinion spread after the specific time. Current studies on COM are still in its infancy, while the only work merely considers the scenario that the strategy of competitors is known but ignores the unknown scenario. In addition, previous studies on COM cannot easily address the situation where some users might dynamically change their opinions. To address the COM issue, we investigate the multistage COM and propose a brand-new Q-learning-based opinion maximization framework (QOMF). Our QOMF consists of two components: dynamic opinion propagation and seeding process. We formulate the COM problem by maximizing relative effective opinions. To produce a dynamic opinion series more realistically, we design an opinion propagation model by joining the activation process and a dynamic opinion process. Moreover, we also verify that the opinion propagation model can reach convergence within finite iterations. To acquire the seed nodes, we design a multistage Q-learning seeding scheme by considering known and unknown competitor strategies, respectively. Experimental results on three real datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the benchmarks on reaching relatively effective opinions.

Phthalates are positioned as potential risk factors for health-related diseases. However, the effects of exposure to phthalates on accelerated aging and the potential modifications of physical activity remain unclear. A total of 2317 participants containing complete study-related information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2010 were included in the current study. We used two indicators, the Klemera-Doubal method biological age acceleration (BioAgeAccel) and phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), to assess the accelerated aging status of the subjects. Multiple linear regression (single pollutant models), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, Quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were utilized to explore the associations between urinary phthalate metabolites and accelerated aging. Three groups of physical activity with different intensities were used to evaluate the modifying effects on the above associations. Results indicated that most phthalate metabolites were significantly associated with BioAgeAccel and PhenoAgeAccel, with effect values (ß) ranging from 0.16 to 0.21 and 0.16-0.37, respectively. The WQS indices were positively associated with BioAgeAccel (0.33, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.54) and PhenoAgeAccel (0.50, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.82). Quantile g-computation indicated that phthalate mixtures were associated with accelerated aging, with effect values of 0.15 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.28) for BioAgeAccel and 0.39 (95% CI: 0.12, 0.67) for PhenoAgeAccel respectively. The BKMR models indicated a significant positive association between the concentrations of urinary phthalate mixtures with the two indicators. In addition, we found that most phthalate metabolites showed the strongest effects on accelerated aging in the no physical activity group and that the effects decreased gradually with increasing levels of physical activity (P < 0.05 for trend). Similar results were also observed in the mixed exposure models (WQS and Quantile g-computation). This study indicates that phthalates exposure is associated with accelerated aging, while physical activity may be a crucial barrier against phthalates exposure-related aging.

Angiogenesis inhibitors and photosensitizers are pivotal in tumor clinical treatment, yet their utilization is constrained. Herein, eleven novel angiogenesis inhibitors were developed through hybridization strategy to overcome their clinical limitations. These title compounds boast excitation wavelengths within the "therapeutic window", enabling deep tissue penetration. Notably, they could generate superoxide anion radicals via the Type I mechanism, with compound 36 showed the strongest superoxide anion radical generating capacity. Biological evaluation demonstrated remarkable cellular activity of all the title compounds, even under hypoxic conditions. Among them, compound 36 stood out for its superior anti-proliferative activity in both normoxic and hypoxic environments, surpassing individual angiogenesis inhibitors and photosensitizers. Compound 36 induced cell apoptosis via superoxide anion radical generation, devoid of dark toxicity. Molecular docking revealed that the target-recognizing portion of compound 36 was able to insert into the ATP binding pocket of the target protein similar to sorafenib. Collectively, our results suggested that hybridization of angiogenesis inhibitors and photosensitizers was a potential strategy to address the limitations of their clinical use.

Spillovers of viruses into human occur more frequently under warmer conditions, particularly arboviruses. The invasive tick species Haemaphysalis longicornis poses a significant public health threat due to its global expansion and its potential to carry a wide range of pathogens. We analyzed meta-transcriptomic data from 3595 adult H. longicornis ticks collected between 2016 and 2019 in 22 provinces across China, encompassing diverse ecological conditions. Generalized additive modelling revealed that climate factors exerted a stronger influence on the virome of H. longicornis compared to other ecological factors, such as ecotypes, distance to coastline, animal host, tick gender, and anti-viral immunity. We investigated the mechanistic understanding of how climate changes drive the tick virome using causality inference and emphasized its significance for public health. Our findings demonstrated that higher temperatures and lower relative humidity/precipitation contribute to variations in animal host diversity, leading to an increased diversity of tick virome, particularly the evenness of vertebrate associated viruses. This finding may explain the evolution of tick-borne viruses into generalists across multiple hosts, thereby increasing the probability of spillover events involving tick-borne pathogens. Deep learning projections indicate that the diversity of H. longicornis virome is expected to increase in 81.9% of regions under the SSP8.5 scenario from 2019-2030. Extension of surveillance should be implemented to avert the spread of tick-borne diseases.

As one of the most attractive methods for the synthesis of ordered hierarchically porous crystalline materials, the soft-template method has not appeared in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to the incompatibility of surfactant self-assembly and guided crystallization process of COF precursors in the organic phase. Herein, we connect the soft templates to the COF backbone through ionic bonds, avoiding their crystallization incompatibilities, thus introducing an additional ordered arrangement of soft templates into the anionic microporous COFs. The ion exchange method is used to remove the templates while maintaining the high crystallinity of COFs, resulting in the construction of COFs with ordered hierarchically micropores/mesopores, herein named OHMMCOFs (OHMMCOF-1 and OHMMCOF-2). OHMMCOFs exhibit significantly enhanced functional group accessibility and faster mass transfer rate. The extrinsic porosity can be adjusted by changing the template length, concentration, and ratio. Cationic guanidine-based COFs (OHMMCOF-3) are also constructed using the same method, which verifies the scalability of the soft-template strategy. This work provides a path for constructing ordered and tunable extrinsic porosity in COFs with greatly improved mass transfer efficiency and functional group accessibility.

Lodging is a crucial factor that limits wheat yield and quality in wheat breeding. Therefore, accurate and timely determination of winter wheat lodging grading is of great practical importance for agricultural insurance companies to assess agricultural losses and good seed selection. However, using artificial fields to investigate the inclination angle and lodging area of winter wheat lodging in actual production is time-consuming, laborious, subjective, and unreliable in measuring results. This study addresses these issues by designing a classification-semantic segmentation multitasking neural network model MLP_U-Net, which can accurately estimate the inclination angle and lodging area of winter wheat lodging. This model can also comprehensively, qualitatively, and quantitatively evaluate the grading of winter wheat lodging. The model is based on U-Net architecture and improves the shift MLP module structure to achieve network refinement and segmentation for complex tasks. The model utilizes a common encoder to enhance its robustness, improve classification accuracy, and strengthen the segmentation network, considering the correlation between lodging degree and lodging area parameters. This study used 82 winter wheat varieties sourced from the regional experiment of national winter wheat in the Huang-Huai-Hai southern area of the water land group at the Henan Modern Agriculture Research and Development Base. The base is located in Xinxiang City, Henan Province. Winter wheat lodging images were collected using the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing platform. Based on these images, winter wheat lodging datasets were created using different time sequences and different UAV flight heights. These datasets aid in segmenting and classifying winter wheat lodging degrees and areas. The results show that MLP_U-Net has demonstrated superior detection performance in a small sample dataset. The accuracies of winter wheat lodging degree and lodging area grading were 96.1% and 92.2%, respectively, when the UAV flight height was 30 m. For a UAV flight height of 50 m, the accuracies of winter wheat lodging degree and lodging area grading were 84.1% and 84.7%, respectively. These findings indicate that MLP_U-Net is highly robust and efficient in accurately completing the winter wheat lodging-grading task. This valuable insight provides technical references for UAV remote sensing of winter wheat disaster severity and the assessment of losses.

With the progress in neonatal intensive care, there has been an increase in the survival rates of premature infants. However, this has also led to an increased incidence of neonatal hyperoxia lung injury and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), whose pathogenesis is believed to be influenced by various prenatal and postnatal factors, although the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Recent studies suggest that multiple mechanisms might be involved in neonatal hyperoxic lung injury and BPD, with sex also possibly playing an important role, and numerous drugs have been proposed and shown promise for improving the treatment outcomes of hyperoxic lung injury. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze and summarize sex differences in neonatal hyperoxic lung injury, potential pathogenesis and treatment progress to provide new ideas for basic and clinical research in this field.

Mycotoxin contamination in food and the environment seriously harms human health. Sensitive and timely detection of mycotoxins is crucial. Here, we report a dual-functional hybrid membrane with absorptivity and responsiveness for fluorescent-quantitative detection of mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). A biomineralization-inspired and microwave-accelerated fabrication method was established to prepare a hybrid membrane with a metal-organic framework (MOF) loaded in high density. The MOF presented high efficiency in capturing AFB1 and showed fluorescence intensity alteration simultaneously, enabling a dual adsorption-response mode. Deriving from the inherent porous structure of the hybrid membrane and the absorptive/responsive ability of the loaded MOF, a filtration-enhanced detection mode was elaborated to provide a 1.67-fold signal increase compared with the conventional soaking method. Therefore, the hybrid membrane exhibited a rapid response time of 10 min and a low detection limit of 0.757 ng mL-1, superior to most analogues in rapidity and sensitivity. The hybrid membrane also presented superior specificity, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability and even performed well in extreme environments such as strong acid or alkaline, satisfying the practical requirements for facile and in-field detection. Therefore, the membrane had strong applicability in chicken feed samples, with a detection recovery between 70.6% and 101%. The hybrid membrane should have significant prospects in the rapid and in-field inspection of mycotoxins for agriculture and food.

Spoilage and deterioration of aquatic products during storage are inevitable, posing significant challenges to their suitability for consumption and the sustainability of the aquatic products supply chain. Research on the nonthermal processing of fruit juices, probiotics, dairy products, and meat has demonstrated positive outcomes in preserving quality. This review examines specific spoilage bacteria species and mechanisms for various aquatic products and discusses the principles, characteristics, and applications of six nonthermal processing methods for bacterial inhibition to maintain microbiological safety and physicochemical quality. The primary spoilage bacteria groups differ among fish, crustaceans, and shellfish based on storage conditions and durations. Four metabolic pathways utilized by spoilage microorganisms-peptides and amino acids, nitrogen compounds, nucleotides, and carbohydrates-are crucial in explaining spoilage. Nonthermal processing techniques, such as ultrahigh pressure, irradiation, magnetic/electric fields, plasma, and ultrasound, can inactivate microorganisms, thereby enhancing microbiological safety, physicochemical quality, and shelf life. Future research may integrate nonthermal processing with other technologies (e.g., modified atmosphere packaging and omics) to elucidate mechanisms of spoilage and improve the storage quality of aquatic products.

Purpose: Anxious depression (AD) is a common, distinct depression subtype. This exploratory subgroup analysis aimed to explore the effects of acupuncture as an add-on therapy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for patients with AD or non-anxious depression (NAD). Patients and Methods: Four hundred and sixty-five patients with moderate-to-severe depression from the AcuSDep pragmatic trial were included in analysis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive MA+SSRIs, EA+SSRIs, or SSRIs alone (1:1:1) for six weeks. AD was defined by using dimensional criteria. The measurement instruments included 17-items Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Rating Scale for Side Effects (SERS), and WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF). Comparison between AD and NAD subgroups and comparisons between groups within either AD or NAD subgroups were conducted. Results: Eighty percent of the patients met the criteria for AD. The AD subgroup had poorer clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes compared to those of the NAD subgroup. For AD patients, the HAMD response rate, remission rate, early onset rate, and the score changes on each scale at most measurement points on the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. For NAD patients, the HAMD early onset rates of the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. Conclusion: For AD subtype patients, either MA or EA add-on SSRIs showed comprehensive improvements, with small-to-medium effect sizes. For NAD subtype patients, both the add-on acupuncture could accelerate the response to SSRIs treatment. The study contributed to the existing literature by providing insights into the potential benefits of acupuncture in combination with SSRIs, especially for patients with AD subtypes. Due to its limited nature as a post hoc subgroup analysis, prospectively designed, high-quality trials are warranted. Clinical Trials Registration: ChiCTR-TRC-08000297.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder observed primarily in girls and women, and is characterized by a low body mass index, hypophagia, and hyperactivity. The activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm models aspects of AN, and refers to the progressive weight loss, hypophagia, and hyperactivity developed by rodents exposed to time-restricted feeding and running wheel access. Recent studies identified white adipose tissue (WAT) as a primary location of the 'metabolic memory' of prior obesity, and implicated WAT-derived signals as drivers of recidivism to obesity following weight loss. Here, we tested whether an obese WAT transplant could attenuate ABA-induced weight loss in normal female mice. Recipient mice received a WAT transplant harvested from normal chow-fed, or HFD-fed obese mice; obese fat recipient (OFR) and control fat recipient (CFR) mice were then tested for ABA. During ABA, OFR mice survived longer than CFR mice, defined as maintaining 75% of their initial body weight. Next, we tested whether agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons, which regulate feeding behavior and metabolic sensing, mediate this effect of obese WAT transplant. CFR and OFR mice received either control or neonatal AgRP ablation, and were assessed for ABA. OFR intact mice maintained higher body weights longer than CFR intact mice, and this effect was abolished by neonatal AgRP ablation; further, ablation reduced survival in OFR, but not CFR mice. In summary, obese WAT transplant communicates with AgRP neurons to increase body weight maintenance during ABA. These findings encourage the examination of obese WAT-derived factors as potential treatments for AN.

Particulate matter (PM) has been a dominant contributor to air contamination, which will enter the central nervous system (CNS), causing neurotoxicity. However, the biological mechanism is poorly identified. In this study, C57BL/6J mice were applied to evaluate the neurotoxicity of collected fine particulate matter (PM2.5), via oropharyngeal aspiration at two ambient equivalent concentrations. The Y-maze results showed that PM2.5 exposure in mice would lead to the damage in hippocampal-dependent working memory. In addition, cell neuroinflammation, microglial activation were detected in hippocampus of PM2.5-exposure mice. To confirm the underlying mechanism, the microarray assay was conducted to screen the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in microglia after PM2.5 exposure, and the results indicated the enrichment of DEGs in ferroptosis pathways. Furthermore, Heme oxygenase-1 (Hmox1) was found to be one of the most remarkably upregulated genes after PM2.5 exposure for 24 h. And PM2.5 exposure induced ferroptosis with iron accumulation through heme degradation by Nrf2-mediated Hmox1 upregulation, which could be eliminated by Nrf2-inhibition. Meanwhile, Hmox1 antagonist zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP) could protect BV2 cells from ferroptosis. The results taken together indicated that PM2.5 resulted in the ferroptosis by causing iron overload through Nrf2/Hmox1 signaling pathway, which could account for the inflammation in microglia.

A critical parameter during the development of protein therapeutics is to endow them with suitable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Small protein drugs are quickly eliminated by kidney filtration, and in vivo half-life extension is therefore often desired. Here, different half-life extension technologies were studied where PAS polypeptides (PAS300, PAS600), XTEN polypeptides (XTEN288, XTEN576), and an albumin binding domain (ABD) were compared for half-life extension of an anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) affibody-drug conjugate. The results showed that extension with the PAS or XTEN polypeptides or the addition of the ABD lowered the affinity for HER2 to some extent but did not negatively affect the cytotoxic potential. The half-lives in mice ranged from 7.3 h for the construct including PAS300 to 11.6 h for the construct including PAS600. The highest absolute tumor uptake was found for the construct including the ABD, which was 60 to 160% higher than the PASylated or XTENylated constructs, even though it did not have the longest half-life (9.0 h). A comparison of the tumor-to-normal-organ ratios showed the best overall performance of the ABD-fused construct. In conclusion, PASylation, XTENylation, and the addition of an ABD are viable strategies for half-life extension of affibody-drug conjugates, with the best performance observed for the construct including the ABD.

As a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based manufacture of bulk oxygenates, electrochemical synthesis using CO and H2O as raw materials at ambient conditions offers immense appeal. However, the upscaling of the electrosynthesis of oxygenates encounters kinetic bottlenecks arising from the competing hydrogen evolution reaction with the selective production of ethylene. Herein, a catalytic relay system that can perform in tandem CO capture, activation, intermediate transfer and enrichment on a Cu-Ag composite catalyst is used for attaining high yield CO-to-oxygenates electrosynthesis at high current densities. The composite catalyst Cu/30Ag (molar ratio of Cu to Ag is 7:3) enables high efficiency CO-to-oxygenates conversion, attaining a maximum partial current density for oxygenates of 800 mA cm-2 at an applied current density of 1200 mA cm-2, and with 67 % selectivity. The ability to finely control the production of ethylene and oxygenates highlights the principle of efficient catalyst design based on the relay mechanism.

Controllable large-scale integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with organic semiconductors and the realization of strong coupling between them still remain challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a wafer-scale, vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction array with high light-trapping ability via a low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy method and a facile spin-coating process. Conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements reveal strong rectification and photoresponse behavior in the individual SnSe2 nanosheet/PTAA heterojunction. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunctions exhibit stronger C-Se covalent coupling than that of the conventional tiled type, which could facilitate more efficient charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction photodetectors with an optimized PTAA concentration show high performance, including a responsivity of 41.02 A/W, an external quantum efficiency of 1.31 × 104%, and high uniformity. The proposed approach for constructing large-scale 2D inorganic-organic heterostructures represents an effective route to fabricate high-performance broadband photodetectors for integrated optoelectronic systems.

A core-shell-shell sandwich material is developed with silver nanowires as the core, ZIF-8 as an inner shell, and gold nanoparticles as the outer shell, namely, Ag@ZIF-8@Au nanowires (AZA-NW). Then, the synthesized AZA-NW is transformed into a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor (named M-AZA) by the vacuum filtration method and used to enrich, detect, and inactivate traces of bacteria in the environment. The M-AZA sensor has three main functions: (1) trace bacteria are effectively enriched, with an enrichment efficiency of 91.4%; (2) ultrasensitive detection of trace bacteria is realized, with a minimum detectable concentration of 1 × 101 CFU/mL; (3) bacteria are effectively killed up to 92.4%. The shell thickness of ZIF-8 (5-75 nm) is controlled by adjusting the synthesis conditions. At an optimum shell thickness of 15 nm, the effect of gold nanoparticles and ZIF-8 shell on the sensor's stability, SERS activity, and antibacterial performance is investigated. The simulation of the SERS sensor using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is consistent with the experimental results, theoretically demonstrating the role of the gold nanoparticles and the ZIF-8 shell. The sensor also shows excellent stability, safety, and generalizability. The campus water sample is then tested on-site by the M-AZA SERS sensor, indicating its potential for practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Underweight is a significant symptom in alcohol-dependent patients, yet few studies have examined underweight in Chinese male patients. The current study aimed to identify the prevalence, sociodemographic, and clinical correlates of underweight in Chinese male patients with alcohol dependency. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 405 male inpatients with alcohol dependence and 383 healthy male controls were recruited. Participants' demographic and clinical data, including anthropometric data, were collected. We first conducted univariate analysis to identify seven variables with significant differences between groups: smoking behavior, hospitalization, alcohol consumption, cerebral infarction, hypertension, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score, and Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptom (SANS) score. Then, binary logistic regression was used to assess their relationship with underweight, with a significance level of .05. RESULTS: The prevalence of underweight was significantly higher in the study population than in the control group (2.99% vs. 2.87%; P < .001). Patients with underweight had significantly higher rates of smoking behavior and cerebral infarction, as well as higher scores of SANS and HAMD than non-underweight patients. The non-underweight patients had higher daily alcohol consumption and times of hospitalization. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis showed that smoking behavior [odds ratio (OR) = 2.84, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.03-7.80, P = .043)], cerebral infarction (OR = 5.20, 95% CI = 1.13-23.85, P = .036), SANS score (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.16-1.28, P < .001), and HAMD score (OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.02-1.11, P = .005) were associated with underweight. CONCLUSIONS: More than 20% of male alcohol-dependent patients in a Chinese sample were underweight. Some demographic and clinical variables independent correlates for underweight in alcohol-dependent patients. We need to focus on alcohol-dependent patients with smoking, cerebral infarction, depression, and more prominent negative symptoms.
