RESUMEN

We have developed a simple time-bin phase encoding quantum key distribution system, using the optical injection locking technique. This setup incorporates both the merits of simplicity and stability in encoding, and immunity to channel disturbance. We have demonstrated the field implementation of quantum key distribution over long-distance deployed aerial fiber automatically. During the 70-day field test, we achieved approximately a 1.0 kbps secure key rate with stable performance. Our work takes an important step toward widespread implementation of QKD systems in diverse and complex real-life scenarios.

In this work, we present a new time-bin phase-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD), where the transmitter utilizes an inherently stable Sagnac-type interferometer, and has comparable electrical requirements to existing polarization or phase encoding schemes. This approach does not require intensity calibration and is insensitive to environmental disturbances, making it both flexible and high-performing. We conducted experiments with a compact QKD system to demonstrate the stability and secure key rate performance of the presented scheme. The results show a typical secure key rate of 6.2 kbps@20 dB and 0.4 kbps@30 dB with channel loss emulated by variable optical attenuators. A continuous test of 120-km fiber spool shows a stable quantum bit error rate of the time-bin basis within 0.4%∼0.6% over a consecutive 9-day period without any adjustment. This intrinsically stable and compatible scheme of time-bin phase encoding is extensively applicable in various QKD experiments, including BB84 and measurement-device-independent QKD.

Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism is a rare endocrine disorder characterized by hypocalcemia secondary to inadequate parathyroid hormone secretion. Hypocalcemia-related cataract is most often observed in patients with postoperative hypoparathyroidism, whereas primary hypoparathyroidism-related cataract is rare and displays slow progression. Cataract usually occurs in people aged 18 to 50 years. Here, we describe a 17-year-old boy with bilateral cataract and a history of hypocalcemic tetany who was diagnosed with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. Phacoemulsification with implantation of a monofocal aspherical intraocular lens was performed in the right eye; 6 months later, it was performed in the left eye. Elevated phosphorus and diminished calcium were observed in blood and aqueous humor. A deep anterior chamber, relatively thin central corneal thickness, large white-to-white distance, and thin lens were also observed. During follow-up, neither eye displayed intraocular lens decentration; best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. These findings suggest that ophthalmologists should be vigilant when hypocalcemic tetany and cataract are present, especially in adolescents and young adults.

The phytohormone gibberellin (GA) is a vital plant signaling molecule that regulates plant growth and defense against abiotic and biotic stresses. To date, the molecular mechanism of the plant responses to viral infection mediated by GA is still undetermined. DELLA is a repressor of GA signaling and is recognized by the F-box protein, a component of the SCFSLY1/GID2 complex. The recognized DELLA is degraded by the ubiquitin-26S proteasome, leading to the activation of GA signaling. Here, we report that ageratum leaf curl Sichuan virus (ALCScV)-infected N. benthamiana plants showed dwarfing symptoms and abnormal flower development. The infection by ALCScV significantly altered the expression of GA pathway-related genes and decreased the content of endogenous GA in N. benthamiana. Furthermore, ALCScV-encoded C4 protein interacts with the DELLA protein NbGAI and interferes with the interaction between NbGAI and NbGID2 to prevent the degradation of NbGAI, leading to inhibition of the GA signaling pathway. Silencing of NbGAI or exogenous GA3 treatment significantly reduces viral accumulation and disease symptoms in N. benthamiana plants. The same results were obtained from experiments with the C4 protein encoded by tobacco curly shoot virus (TbCSV). Therefore, we propose a novel mechanism by which geminivirus C4 proteins control viral infection and disease symptom development by interfering with the GA signaling pathway.

Tomato cultivars containing the Tm-22 resistance gene have been widely known to resist tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and tomato mosaic virus. Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), a new emerging tobamovirus, can infect tomato plants carrying the Tm-22 gene. However, the virulence determinant of ToBRFV that overcomes the resistance conferred by the Tm-22 gene remains unclear. In this study, we substituted the movement protein (MP) encoding sequences between ToBRFV and TMV infectious clones and conducted infectivity assays. The results showed that MP was the virulence determinant for ToBRFV to infect Tm-22 transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana plants and Tm-22 -carrying tomato plants. A TMV MP chimera with amino acid residues 60-186 of ToBRFV MP failed to induce hypersensitive cell death in the leaves of Tm-22 transgenic N. benthamiana plants. Chimeric TMV containing residues 60-186 of ToBRFV MP could, but chimeric ToBRFV containing 61-187 residues of TMV MP failed to infect Tm-22 transgenic N. benthamiana plants, indicating that 60-186 residues of MP were important for ToBRFV to overcome Tm-22 gene-mediated resistance. Further analysis showed that six amino acid residues, H67 , N125 , K129 , A134 , I147 , and I168 of ToBRFV MP, were critical in overcoming Tm-22 -mediated resistance in transgenic N. benthamiana plants and tomato plants. These results increase our understanding of the mechanism by which ToBRFV overcomes Tm-22 -mediated resistance.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification is one of the most common complications after cataract surgery. Studies have suggested that the introduction of a capsule tension ring might play a critical role in the prevention of capsule opacification, yet quantitative evidence is still lacking. This work consists of a meta-analysis on available data in order to explore the influence of a capsule tension ring on posterior capsule opacification. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on capsule tension ring and posterior capsule opacification was carried out using the Embase, Pubmed, Web of Science, and Cochrane electronic databases. The selected studies included randomized controlled trials, retrospective studies and prospective studies published before June 2020. The studies of interest were selected by two reviewers independently from the included studies. Odds ratios (ORs) and standardized mean differences (SMD) were used in order to assess the association. A fixed-effects model or a random-effects model was applied to combine data according to heterogeneities. Sensitivity analysis was used to assess the heterogeneity of the studies. Publication bias was estimated using the Egger test. Statistical analysis was performed using the stata15.1 software. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included in total 8 studies involving 379 cases and 333 controls. There was a statistically significant difference of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rate (OR=0.241, 95% CI: 0.145, 0.400 I2=42.1%) between the capsule tension ring group and the control group, indicating that the tension ring reduced the Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rate. Further studies with continuous data also revealed that the use of capsule tension ring was associated with a lower posterior capsule opacification score (SMD = -1.402, 95% CI: -2.448, -0.355 I2=95.0%). The sensitivity analysis suggested that the result of the re-combined analysis did not change notably, indicating that the result was reliable and stable. Both pooled analysis showed no evidence of publication bias. CONCLUSION: The findings of this meta-analysis confirmed that capsule tension ring might reduce capsule opacification. Further studies should be made to validate the result.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether dynamic monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) level might be as predictors of perceived pain during the first and second phacoemulsification eye surgeries in patients with bilateral cataract. METHODS: Consecutive bilateral cataract patients undergoing bilateral sequential phacoemulsification were retrospectively enrolled. Patients' preoperative anxiety score and intraoperative pain score were registered. Aqueous humor samples were obtained during surgery. MCP-1 level in the aqueous humor was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa). Patients were assigned to seven subgroups based on the interval between first-eye and second-eye cataract surgery. Comparisons were performed for a subjective sensation and MCP-1 levels among different subgroups. RESULTS: pain score during second-eye surgery was significantly higher than during first-eye surgery. Whereas there was no statistical difference in anxiety score between both surgeries. Result from subgroups comparison showed that the visual analog scale (VAS) pain score was statistically greater in 1-group and 6-group during the second eye surgery. Anxiety score did not statistically differ in subgroups. Additionally, the second-eye MCP-1 level was significantly higher at week 1and 6 intervals. Preoperative MCP-1 level was positively correlated with perceiving pain score during both surgeries. CONCLUSIONS: MCP-1 level in aqueous humor significantly correlated with perceived pain during cataract surgery. Dynamic MCP-1 level could function as predictors of perceived pain during the first and second phacoemulsification eye surgeries in patients with bilateral cataract, which might support clinicians in treatment optimization and clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: This research was conducted with the aim to determine the effect of diabetes mellitus on corneal endothelial cells. METHODS: The terms: ("diabetes mellitus" or "diabetes" or "diabetic") and ("corneal endothelium" or "cornea" or "Corneas") searched in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of science until August 2019. The included types of studies contained observational studies. The standard mean difference (SMD) which was deemed as main size effects for continuous data was calculated by means and standard deviations. The data on corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), mean cell area (MCA), cell area variation coefficient (CV) and percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX) included in the study were collected and analyzed using stata15.1. RESULTS: The final 16 cross-sectional studies and 2 case-control studies were included for the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis revealed that diabetes mellitus could reduce ECD (SMD = - 0.352, 95% CI -0.538, - 0.166) and the HEX (SMD = - 0.145, 95% CI -0.217, - 0.074), in addition to increasing CV (SMD = 0.195, 95% CI 0.123, 0.268). Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant differences observed when combining MCA (SMD = 0.078, 95% CI -0.022, 0.178). In subgroup analysis, Type 2 diabetes patients owned less corneal ECD (P < 0.05). Moreover the same results also found during the subgroup form Asia, Europe and American. The meta-regression revealed the type of diabetes mellitus might be contributing to heterogeneity. (P = 0.008). The results indicated a significant publication bias for studies, with combined CV (Begg's test, P = 0.006; Egger's test, P = 0.005) and merged combined HEX (Begg's test, P = 0.113; Egger's test, P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: As indicated by meta-analysis, diabetes mellitus could cause a detrimental effect on corneal endothelium health. Diabetes mellitus contributed to the instability of corneal endothelium during the analysis. Therefore, further research is considered necessary to confirm our research results. Quantum key distribution (QKD)1,2 has the potential to enable secure communication and information transfer3. In the laboratory, the feasibility of point-to-point QKD is evident from the early proof-of-concept demonstration in the laboratory over 32 centimetres4; this distance was later extended to the 100-kilometre scale5,6 with decoy-state QKD and more recently to the 500-kilometre scale7-10 with measurement-device-independent QKD. Several small-scale QKD networks have also been tested outside the laboratory11-14. However, a global QKD network requires a practically (not just theoretically) secure and reliable QKD network that can be used by a large number of users distributed over a wide area15. Quantum repeaters16,17 could in principle provide a viable option for such a global network, but they cannot be deployed using current technology18. Here we demonstrate an integrated space-to-ground quantum communication network that combines a large-scale fibre network of more than 700 fibre QKD links and two high-speed satellite-to-ground free-space QKD links. Using a trusted relay structure, the fibre network on the ground covers more than 2,000 kilometres, provides practical security against the imperfections of realistic devices, and maintains long-term reliability and stability. The satellite-to-ground QKD achieves an average secret-key rate of 47.8 kilobits per second for a typical satellite pass-more than 40 times higher than achieved previously. Moreover, its channel loss is comparable to that between a geostationary satellite and the ground, making the construction of more versatile and ultralong quantum links via geosynchronous satellites feasible. Finally, by integrating the fibre and free-space QKD links, the QKD network is extended to a remote node more than 2,600 kilometres away, enabling any user in the network to communicate with any other, up to a total distance of 4,600 kilometres.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can share an unconditional secure key between two remote parties, but the deviation between theory and practice will break the security of the generated key. In this paper, we evaluate the security of QKD with weak basis-choice flaws, in which the random bits used by Alice and Bob are weakly controlled by Eve. Based on the definition of Li et al. (Sci Rep 5:16200, 2015) and GLLP's analysis, we obtain a tight and analytical bound to estimate the phase error and key rate for both the single photon source and the weak coherent source. Our approach largely increases the key rate from that of the original approach. Finally, we investigate and confirm the security of BB84-QKD with a practical commercial devices.

Owing to a rapidly aging population, vision impairment caused by age-related cataract has become very common. Age-related cataract has also become one of the principal causes of blindness, and apoptosis of lens epithelial cells contributes to non-congenital cataract development. Previous studies have reported that microRNA let-7b (let-7b) is upregulated in cataractous lens epithelial cells, and the expression level of let-7b is positively associated with N, C and P cataract scores. However, the role of let-7b in the development of age-related cataract remains unclear. Here, we observed that the expression level of let-7b in the anterior lens capsules of age-related cataract was significantly higher than that in the normal anterior lens capsules. We performed ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to induce lens epithelial cell apoptosis. The results showed that the expression level of let-7b in lens epithelial cells which were treated by UV irradiation was significantly higher than that in the control, and let-7b promoted UV irradiation-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, we showed that leucine-rich repeat containing G protein-coupled receptor 4 (Lgr4) was a direct target of let-7b, and let-7b modulated lens epithelial cell apoptosis by directly targeting Lgr4. These findings will offer new insights into our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of cataract.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of Bcl-2 during the process of apoptosis in the mouse crystalline lens. In total, 12 normal mice served as the control group and 12 Bcl-2 knockout (K.O) mice served as the experimental group. The mouse crystalline lens was sampled for the detection of Bcl-2 and caspase-3 expression following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to determine Bcl-2 expression in the groups of normal mice receiving UV radiation or not receiving UV radiation. Samples of the murine crystalline lens were microscopically harvested and analyzed using western blotting. Apoptosis was detected using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Furthermore, caspase 3 activity was examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits, and RT-qPCR was used to analyze caspase-3 expression levels. The results of the present study demonstrated that there was no statistically significant difference in the level of Bcl-2 gene transcription between the two groups. In addition, UV radiation did not change the macrostructure of the crystalline lens in the group of normal mice or the group of Bcl-2 K.O mice. The results of the TUNEL assay indicated that the normal-UV group exhibited a more significant apoptosis level compared with the Bcl-2 K.O-UV group. Furthermore, the mRNA expression level of caspase-3 in the normal-UV group was significantly higher compared with the normal-nonUV group (P<0.05), while the levels in the Bcl-2 K.O-UV group were significantly higher compared with the Bcl-2 K.O and normal-nonUV groups (P<0.05). In addition, the mRNA expression level of caspase-3 was significantly higher in the normal-UV, as compared with the Bcl-2 K.O-UV group (P<0.05), and the variation trends in caspase-3 activity were consistent. In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that Bcl-2 may have an important role in the promotion of UV-induced apoptosis in the crystalline lens.

Eyelid conditioning, including delay eyelid conditioning and trace eyelid conditioning, has been used extensively to study neural structures and mechanisms of learning and memory as a form of associative learning. In the present study, microcurrent electrical stimulation was used to stimulate the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to induce delay eyelid conditioning in guinea pigs. The acquisition rate and relative latency of the conditioned eyelid response (CR) and the startle eyelid response (SR) were analyzed. The mPFC sites in the guinea pigs were examined under a light microscope following Nissl staining. In addition, the expression of Fos protein in neurons was detected using immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. The results indicated that the acquisition rates of CR and SR were increased significantly (P<0.05), whilst the relative latencies of CR and SR were decreased significantly (P<0.05). Lesions were observed in the mPFC regions in the training group when compared with the control group. In addition, immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis revealed that Fos expression was significantly increased in the training group when compared with the sham group for the control and resident-intruder test guinea pigs (P<0.05). Therefore, the enhancement of delay eyelid conditioning by microcurrent electrical stimulation of the mPFC in guinea pigs was triggered by the expression of Fos protein. The observations of the present study further expand the understanding of conditioned reflexes and may aid future investigations into the formation of eyelid conditioning and the mechanisms underlying the circuit in various conditions.

Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug which exhibits numerous pleiotropic effects including anti-cancer activity. Yet, the anti-cancer effects in choroidal melanoma remain poorly characterized. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of simvastatin on OCM-1 cells growth, apoptosis and cycle. Simvastatin showed an inhibitory effects on OCM-1 cells viability in dose-dependent (2-10 µM) and time-dependent (24-72 h) manner. Further study suggested that simvastatin-induced inhibition OCM-1 cells proliferation was associated with G1 phase arrest, decreased protein and mRNA expression of proliferation marker cyclin D1, cyclin E, cyclin dependent kinase (CDK)2 and increased expression of CDK inhibitory protein P21. In addition, simvastatin resulted in an increase in levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in OCM-1 cells and simvastatin significantly triggered apoptosis in OCM-1 cells, which was characterized by increased chromatin condensation, activation of caspase-9 and cleaved-caspase-3, increased expression mitochondrion-related apoptosis protein of P53, Bax and decreased expression of Bcl2 and iASPP. Collectively, our study demonstrated that simvastatin can efficiently inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in OCM-1 cells.

Polyoxometalates (H(3)PW(12)O(40), H(4)SiW(12)O(40) and H(3)PMo(12)O(40)) have been proven to possess intrinsic peroxidase-like activity for the first time, which can catalyze oxidation of the peroxidase substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H(2)O(2) to form a blue color in aqueous solution. Among them, H(3)PW(12)O(40) (PW(12)) exhibits higher catalytic activity to TMB than natural enzyme HRP and other two POMs. In addition, H(3)PW(12)O(40)/graphene exhibited higher activity than H(3)PW(12)O(40) in this catalytic oxidation reaction due to the effect of graphene in promoting the electron transfer between the substrate and catalyst. POMs/H(2)O(2)/TMB system provides a simple, accurate approach to colorimetric detection for H(2)O(2) or glucose. The colorimetric method based on POMs showed good response toward H(2)O(2) and glucose detection with a linear range from 1.34×10(-7) to 6.7×10(-5) mol/L and 1×10(-7) to 1×10(-4) mol/L, respectively. The results showed that it is a simple, cheap, more convenient, highly selective, sensitive, and easy handling colorimetric assay.

RESUMEN

The quantum adiabatic theorem plays an important role in quantum mechanics. However, counter-examples were produced recently, indicating that their transition probabilities do not converge as predicted by the adiabatic theorem [K. P. Marzlin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408 (2004); D. M. Tong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 110407 (2005)]. For a special class of Hamiltonians, we examine the standard criterion for adiabatic evolution experimentally and theoretically, as well as three newly suggested adiabatic conditions. We show that the standard criterion is neither sufficient nor necessary.

RESUMEN

The biomechanical properties of eight human corneas from four normal Chinese fresh corpses were investigated by use of one dimension tensile test, tensile stress relaxation and creep test. The destructive load, stretchy ratio, spreading stress, spreading strain and elastic modulus were determined. Also obtained were the stress relaxation and creep data and curves. After reduction of data, the reduced stress relaxation and creep data and curves were worked out. The regression method was used to get the regression coefficient. The least square method was employed to fit the data of stress and strain; then the stress-strain formula was expressed and the curves of human cornea were plotted. The constitutive equation is K (lambda,t) = G(t) T(e) (lambda) and some conclusions are drawn.
