RESUMEN

The study aimed to explore an extra-articular screw placement strategy in Stoppa approach. Radiographic data of patients who underwent pelvic computed tomography from January 2016 to June 2017 were imported into Materiaise's interactive medical image control system software for three-dimensional reconstruction. Superior and lower margins of acetabulum and ipsilateral pelvic brim could be observed simultaneously through inlet-obturator view. A horizontal line from superior acetabular margin intersected pelvic brim at point "A" and another vertical line from lower margin intersected pelvic brim at point "B" were drawn, respectively. Lengths form sacroiliac joint to "A" (a), "A" to "B" (b), and "B" to pubic symphysis (c) were measured. Patients were divided into four groups depending on gender and side difference of measured hemi-pelvis: male left, male right, female left, and female right. Lengths of adjacent holes (d) and spanning different holes (e) of different plates were also measured. Mean lengths of a, b, c in four groups were 40.94 ± 1.85 mm, 40.09 ± 1.93 mm, 41.78 ± 3.62 mm, and 39.77 ± 2.23 mm (P = 0.078); 40.65 ± 1.58 mm, 41.48 ± 1.64 mm, 40.40 ± 1.96 mm, and 40.66 ± 1.70 mm (P = 0.265); 57.03 ± 3.41 mm, 57.51 ± 3.71 mm, 57.84 ± 4.40 mm, and 59.84 ± 4.35 mm (P = 0.165), respectively. Mean d length of different plates was 12.23 mm. Average lengths spanning 1, 2, 3 and 4 holes were 19.33 mm, 31.58 mm, 43.80 mm, and 55.93 mm. Our data showed that zones a and c could be safely inserted three and four screws. Penetration into hip joint could be avoided when vacant 3-hole drilling was conducted in zone b. Fracture line in zone b could serve as a landmark for screw placement.

RESUMEN

Polarized growth plays a key role in all domains of their biology, including morphogenesis and pathogenicity of filamentous fungi. However, little information is available about the determinants of polarized growth. The fungal Mep2, Pes1, and Cph1 proteins were identified to be involved in the dimorphic transition between yeast and hyphal forms in Candida albicans. In this study, evidence that the dimorphic fungal entomopathogen Ophiocordyceps sinensis Mep2, Pes1, and Cph1 proteins are involved in polarized growth is presented. OsMep2 was significantly upregulated at aerial hyphae and conidia germination stages. OsCph1 was significantly upregulated at aerial hyphae, conidia initiation, and conidia germination stages, and OsPes1 was significantly upregulated at the conidia germination stage. Deletions of OsMep2, OsCph1, and OsPes1 provoked defects in the polarized growth. The abilities of hyphal formation and the yields of blastospores and conidia for the ∆ OsMep2, ∆OsCph1, and ∆ OsPes1 mutants were significantly reduced. The conidia yields of the ΔOsMep2, ΔOsCph1, and ΔOsPes1 mutants were decreased by 69.17%, 60.90%, and 75.82%, respectively. Moreover, the pathogenicity of the ∆ OsMep2, ∆OsCph1, and ∆ OsPes1 mutants against Thitarodes xiaojinensis was significantly reduced. The mummification rate caused by wide type and ΔOsMep2, ΔOsCph1, and ΔOsPes1 mutants were 36.98% ± 8.52%, 0.31% ± 0.63%, 1.15% ± 1.57%, and 19.69% ± 5.6%, respectively. These results indicated that OsMep2, OsCph1, and OsPes1 are involved in the regulation of hyphal formation, sporulation, and pathogenicity of O. sinensis. This study provided a basis for the understanding of the fungal dimorphic development and improving the efficiency of artificial cultivation of O. sinensis.

RESUMEN

In this study, we successfully estimated the apparent activation energy of a microbially driven oxygen-consuming reaction (microbial-driven) based on tracer data. The concept of the apparent chemical reaction rate constant was employed to estimate various thermodynamic parameters associated with the oxygen consumption rate in conjunction with Arrhenius/Eyring equations. Normal Ea values of 80-90 kJ mol-1 were found in the upper layers of the South China Sea and Sulu Sea, while higher Ea values (300-1000 kJ mol-1) were observed in the rapidly ventilated Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Japan, and the Bering Sea with lower temperatures. We classified the characteristics of typical sea basins into four categories. The temperature-dependent oxygen consumption rate relationship in each marine region was systematically calculated to derive the respective thermodynamic characteristic values. This allowed us to parameterize the rate-temperature relationship into thermodynamic quantities, enabling more effective integration of distinct basin characteristics within different sea areas into the marine biochemical model. Parameterization facilitates relatively accurate prediction of changes such as temperature, oxygen consumption rate.

RESUMEN

Purpose: K-wire with tension band (KTB) technique has long been the primary surgical method for transverse patella fractures; however, it also has shortcomings. This study is aimed at evaluating the three different techniques to see whether the cannulated screw tension band (CSTB) or ring pin tension band (RPTB) techniques could decrease complications and achieve better knee function compared with KTB. Methods: We conducted a retrospective comparison of the KTB, CSTB, and RPTB fixation techniques. We selected and reviewed 90 patients (30 patients in each fixation group) with follow-up at least 2 years. Duration of operation, intraoperative blood loss, mean healing time, visual analog scale score, range of motion, Böstman score, Iowa knee score, modified Lysholm rating scale, and postoperative complications were compared. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the independent risk factors for fracture healing time, postoperative complications, and knee function recovery. Results: After adjusting for confounding factors, multivariate regression analysis revealed that CSTB was 0.26 times (95% CI: 0.08-0.86, p = 0.027) less likely to prolong fracture healing time, 0.20 times (95% CI: 0.06-0.64, p = 0.007) lesser risk of postoperative complications, and more than four times (95% CI: 1.41-13.56, p = 0.011) as likely to improve the knee function score compared with KTB. Besides, RPTB were also superior to KTB in reducing the incidence of postoperative complications (OR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.07-0.64, p = 0.006) and improved knee function score (OR: 3.96, 95% CI: 1.30-12.08, p = 0.016); however, the CSTB group being more superior. In addition, AO/OTA C2 fractures (OR, odds ratio: 10.68, 95% CI: 1.30-87.70, p = 0.027) and high-energy fracture (OR: 8.78, 95% CI: 1.57-49.17, p = 0.013) were also associated with prolonged fracture healing time but not with postoperative complications and knee function. No significant differences in related indicators such as gender, age, BMI, AO/OTA classification, fracture side, injury mechanism, duration of operation, and intraoperative blood loss were detected among the three groups. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the CSTB technique is superior to KTB and RPTB techniques in reducing the incidence of postoperative complications, and it also has advantages in accelerating fracture healing, achieving better VAS, ROM, and functional recovery. Further long-term large-sized prospective randomized trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy of the KTB in treating transverse patellar fractures.

RESUMEN

We aimed to investigate whether the use of intravenous paracetamol (IVP) preoperatively in intertrochanteric fracture (IF) patients aged 65 years or over receiving intramedullary fixation had significantly benefits on the pain score at discharge, delirium incidence, length of hospital stay (LOS), functional outcomes, and mortality. A retrospective analysis of all surgically treated patients presenting with IF was conducted at a single Level I trauma center in China between Jan. 2016 and Jan. 2020. The data concerning patients' demographics, injury-related data, surgery-related data, operation-related data, in-hospital data, and postoperative outcomes were extracted. To minimize potential confounding and selection bias, the propensity score matching (PSM) method was performed via the caliper matching method by using a 1 : 1 ratio. After PSM, McNemar's chi-square tests were used to examine the association of using IVP with outcome analyses. The Spearman correlations of IVP using, pain scores, and the factors which may influence them were also computed. After screening 2963 consecutive patients, 2166 were included finally, including 1576 in the non-IVP group and 590 in the IVP group. After PSM, 531 remained in each group. The pain scores at discharge were significantly between the two groups before and after matching (all p < 0.001). The differences of delirium rate and functional outcomes became significant after propensity score-based matching (p=0.001 and 0.033, respectively), although they were not significant before matching. No significant difference was observed in other operation-related data, LOS, and crude mortality rates at 30-day, 90-day, and 12-month before and after PSM. In conclusion, this study highlights the need for preoperative IVP use to optimize pain control, postoperative functional recovery, and minimize pain-related comorbidities such as delirium in elderly patients with hip fracture.

RESUMEN

Global climate change is an indisputable fact, and anthropogenic disturbances are the likely driving mechanisms; moreover, marginal seas tend to respond faster than the global ocean. In this study, the transit time distribution method was used to estimate the anthropogenic carbon (Cant) in the typical marginal seas along the west side of North Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. From the South China Sea (SCS) to the Arctic Ocean (AO), the range of Cant storage gradually increased with latitude. The maximum and minimum rates of ~0.6 mol C·m-2·yr-1, and ~0.2 mol C·m-2·yr-1 were seen in the AO and SCS, respectively. In the short term, warming and decline of ice cover may promote the transfer of excess CO2 from the atmosphere to the water interior; but on a longer time scale, a positive feedback (i.e., reduced CO2 absorption) may occur due to warming. Accordingly, the AO will likely no longer be a CO2 sink in the future when the sea ice disappears completely.

RESUMEN

By employing a culture-dependent and -independent 16S rRNA and ITS gene high-throughput sequencing analyses, comprehensive information was obtained on the gut bacterial and fungal communities in the ghost moth larvae of three different geographic locations from high-altitude on Tibet plateau and from low-altitude laboratory. Twenty-six culturable bacterial species belonging to 21 genera and 14 fungal species belonging to 12 genera were identified from six populations by culture-dependent method. Carnobacterium maltaromaticum was the most abundant bacterial species from both the wild and laboratory-reared larvae. The most abundant OTUs in the wild ghost moth populations were Carnobacteriaceae, Enterobacteriaceae for bacteria, and Ascomycota and Basidiomycota for fungi. Larval microbial communities of the wild ghost moth from different geographic locations were not significantly different from each other but significant difference in larval microbial community was detected between the wild and laboratory-reared ghost moth. The larval gut of the wild ghost moth was dominated by the culturable Carnobacterium. However, that of the laboratory-reared ghost moth exhibited significantly abundant Wolbachia, Rhizobium, Serratia, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium. Furthermore, the larval gut of the wild ghost moth had a significantly higher abundance of Ophiocordyceps but lower abundance of Candida and Aspergillus than that of the laboratory-reared ghost moth.

RESUMEN

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an important therapy for the management of refractory wounds. The aim of this retrospective preliminary study was to introduce a modified NPWT (m-NPWT) and compared the efficacy of it with conventional NPWT (c-NPWT) in the management of refractory wounds.A total of 127 patients with refractory wounds receiving the NPWT from January 2010 to October 2017 in our hospital were retrospectively reviewed. The demographics and clinical data were collected from medical records and compared between m-NPWT group and c-NPWT group. There were 65 patients in c-NPWT group and 62 patients in m-NPWT group. No significant difference was observed between 2 groups in antimicrobial use (P = .51), hospitalization time (P = .24), wound-healing rate (P = .44) or complication rate (P = .59). However, patients in m-NPWT group had shorter wound-healing time (24.82 vs 27.66 days, P < .01), less debridement times (1.23 vs 2.08, P < .01), less total cost (3743.93 vs 6344.33 yuan, P < .01) and higher satisfaction rate (56/62 vs 44/65, P = .02) compared to those in c-NPWT group. The m-NPWT technique was an efficient and safe alternative therapy for refractory wounds.

RESUMEN

: Astaxanthin from H. pluvialis is an antioxidant and presents a promising application in medicine for human health. The two-stage strategy has been widely adopted to produce astaxanthin by the Haematococcus industry and research community. However, cell death and low astaxanthin productivity have seriously affected the stability of astaxanthin production. This study aims to test the effect of cell transformation strategies on the production of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis and determine the optimal initial biomass density (IBD) in the red stage. The experimental design is divided into two parts, one is the vegetative growth experiment and the other is the stress experiment. The results indicated that: (1) the cell transformation strategy of H. pluvialis can effectively reduce cell death occurred in the red stage and significantly increase the biomass and astaxanthin production. (2) Compared with the control group, the cell mortality rate of the red stage in the treatment group was reduced by up to 81.6%, and the biomass and astaxanthin production was increased by 1.63 times and 2.1 times, respectively. (3) The optimal IBD was determined to be 0.5, and the highest astaxanthin content can reach 38.02 ± 2.40 mg·g-1. Thus, this work sought to give useful information that will lead to an improved understanding of the cost-effective method of cultivation of H. pluvialis for natural astaxanthin. This will be profitable for algal and medicine industry players.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To probe into the expression of FGD5-AS1 in osteosarcoma and its relationship with miR-320b. METHODS: The tissue and serum samples of 97 patients with osteosarcoma were collected, and the serum samples of 100 healthy subjects who concurrently underwent physical examination were selected as the control. FGD5-AS1 expression in tissues and serum was detected, and osteosarcoma cells were transfected to measure cell behaviors such as proliferation, invasion and apoptosis. RESULTS: FGD5-AS1 was highly expressed in osteosarcoma, and its elevated expression indicated poor survival of patients. Serum FGD5-AS1 was related to tumor size and clinical stage and could be used for the diagnosis of osteosarcoma. The study of osteosarcoma cell lines U2OS and SaOS-2 showed that after inhibiting FGD5-AS1, the viability and invasion capacity of osteosarcoma cells decreased statistically compared with the control group (CG), while the apoptosis ability could be improved by further regulating apoptotic proteins (P<0.05). Detection of EMT-related proteins identified that E-cadherin increased while N-cadherin decreased significantly after FGD5-AS1 inhibition (P<0.05). Correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between miR-320b and FGD5-AS1 (r = -0.410, P<0.001). Overexpression of miR-320b significantly inhibited cell viability, invasion and EMT ability, and increased the apoptosis rate, while inhibiting miR-320b expression produced the opposite results. The targeting relationship between miR-320b and FGD5-AS1 was confirmed through the biological prediction website, luciferase assay and RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay. Inhibition of miR-320b could reverse the regulatory effect of FGD5-AS1 knockdown on osteosarcoma cells. CONCLUSION: FGD5-AS1 is highly expressed in osteosarcoma and is involved in the biological procession of osteosarcoma by targeting miR-320b.

RESUMEN

The current commercial production of natural astaxanthin is mainly carried out using Haematococcus pluvialis vegetative cells in the "two-stage" batch mode. The motile vegetative cells are more sensitive to stress than nonmotile vegetative cells, thereby affecting the overall astaxanthin productivity in H. pluvialis cultures. In this study, we compared the differences between motile cells and nonmotile cells in astaxanthin productivity, morphological changes, the mortality rate, and the diameter of the formed cysts. The experimental design was achieved by two different types H. pluvialis cell under continuous light of 80 µmol photons m-2 s-1 for a 9-day induction period. The highest astaxanthin concentration of 48.42 ± 3.13 mg L-1 was obtained in the nonmotile cell cultures with the highest the productivity of 5.04 ± 0.15 mg L-1 day-1, which was significantly higher than that in the motile cell cultures. The microscopic examination of cell morphological showed a large number of photooxidative damaged cells occurring in the motile cell cultures, resulting in higher cell mortality rate (22.2 ± 3.97%) than nonmotile cell cultures (9.6 ± 0.63%). In addition, the analysis results of cell diameter statistics indicated that nonmotile cells were more conducive to the formation of large astaxanthin-rich cysts than motile cells. In conclusion, the works presented here suggest that the accumulation of astaxanthin was significantly improved by nonmotile cells of H. pluvialis, which provided a possibility of optimizing the existing H. pluvialis cultivation strategy for the industrial production.

RESUMEN

Dispersion and aggregation behavior of nanoparticles in aquatic environment may be affected by pH, salinity, and dissolved organic matter, which would change its ecological risk. Effects of time, power and temperature on the alumina nanoparticles (nano-Al2O3) ultrasonic dispersion in water were discussed. Al2O3 had a best ultrasonic dispersion for 30 min at 105 W and 30 °C. The concentration of Al2O3 could be measured by ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometer, and the method was efficient and accurate. Furthermore, the sedimentation rate of Al2O3 was related to pH, salinity, and its concentration in the artificial seawater. When pH was 7.31, approaching the isoelectric point of Al2O3, they aggregated and settled fastest. Settlement coefficient (k) of Al2O3 increased by 3 and 2.7 times while the salinity and its concentration increased. The sedimentation rate was higher in natural seawater than that in artificial seawater. All results indicated that nano-Al2O3 would be removed in aquatic environment.

RESUMEN

Haematococcus pluvialis, as the best natural resource of astaxanthin, is widely used in nutraceuticals, aquaculture, and cosmetic industries. The purpose of this work was to compare the differences in astaxanthin accumulation between motile and nonmotile cells of H. pluvialis and to determine the relationship between the two cells and astaxanthin production. The experiment design was achieved by two different types of H. pluvialis cell and three different light intensities for an eight day induction period. The astaxanthin concentrations in nonmotile cell cultures were significantly increased compared to motile cell cultures. The increase of astaxanthin was closely associated with the enlargement of cell size, and the nonmotile cells were more conducive to the formation of large astaxanthin-rich cysts than motile cells. The cyst enlargement and astaxanthin accumulation of H. pluvialis were both affected by light intensity, and a general trend was that the higher the light intensity, the larger the cysts formed, and the larger the quantity of astaxanthin accumulated. In addition, the relatively low cell mortality rate in the nonmotile cell cultures indicated that the nonmotile cells have a stronger tolerance to photooxidative stress. We suggest that applying nonmotile cells as the major cell type of H. pluvialis to the induction period may help to enhance the content of astaxanthin and the stability of astaxanthin production.

RESUMEN

Marine colloids could be an important source of nitrogen for bacteria and photoplankton. But elevated concentration of colloids may stimulate algal growth and lead to red tides in coastal waters. The effects of colloidal organic carbon (COC) concentration on the growth of photosysthetic bacteria (PSB) were investigated under different colloidal treatments in the laboratory. The PSB growth was inversely proportional to COC concentration and was restricted by high-molecular-weight (HMW) colloids (>10 KDa) in treatments with non-nutrient or just inorganic nutrient with low COC concentration ( < or = 5 microMC). However, the PBS growth was enhanced in the presence of HMW colloids in the treatment with inorganic nutrient and high COC (127 and 255 microMC) or with both inorganic nutrient and low-molecular-weight organic matter. Both bacteria number and bacteria growth ratio increased significantly when the concentration of COC was > or = 5 microMC. Our results suggest that marine colloids can be utilized by bacteria and might regulate primary productivity in coastal waters.
