The rough morphology at the growth surface results in the non-uniform distribution of indium composition, intentionally or unintentionally doped impurity, and thus impacts the performance of GaN-based optoelectronic and vertical power electronic devices. We observed the morphologies of unintentionally doped GaN homo-epitaxially grown via MOCVD and identified the relations between rough surfaces and the miscut angle and direction of the substrate. The growth kinetics under the effect of the Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier were studied, and it was found that asymmetric step motions in samples with a large miscut angle or those grown at high temperature were the causes of step-bunching. Meandering steps were believed to be caused by surface free energy minimization for steps with wide terraces or deviating from the [11¯00] m-direction.

Introduction: Voice assistants (VAs) have the potential to uphold and enhance the quality of life for older adults. However, the extent to which older adults accept and benefit from VAs may be relatively modest. Methods: This study developed a comprehensive model combined with product and personal characteristics to explain the acceptance of VAs among older adults, using semi-structured interviews (Study 1) and questionnaires (Study 2). Results: Results revealed that in terms of product characteristics, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment significantly affect behavior intention. Regarding personal characteristics of older adults, technological self-efficacy and dispositional resistance to change significantly affect behavior intention. However, no direct impact of perceived ease of use and perceived trust on behavior intention. Additionally, perceived enjoyment influenced both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Discussion: Results suggested the significant role of technology self-efficacy and dispositional resistance to change in predicting the acceptance of VAs among older adults. Our newly developed model offers valuable insights for tailoring VAs to this demographic during design and implementation.

Developing efficient oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) made from earth-abundant elements is extremely important since the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with sluggish kinetics hinders the development of many energy-related electrochemical devices. Herein, an efficient strategy is developed to prepare conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with abundant and uniform coordination sites by coupling the N-rich organic monomer 2,4,6-tris(5-bromopyrimidin-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TBPT) with Co(II) porphyrin. The resulting CMP-Py(Co) is further metallized with Co2+ ions to obtain CMP-Py(Co)@Co. Structural characterization results reveal that CMP-Py(Co)@Co has higher Co2+ content (12.20 wt %) and affinity toward water compared with CMP-Py(Co). Moreover, CMP-Py(Co)@Co exhibits an excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 285 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 80.1 mV dec-1, which are significantly lower than those of CMP-Py(Co) (335 mV vs RHE and 96.8 mV dec-1). More interestingly, CMP-Py(Co)@Co outperforms most reported porous organic polymer-based OECs and the benchmark RuO2 catalyst (320 mV vs RHE and 87.6 mV dec-1). Additionally, Co2+-free CMP-Py(2H) has negligible OER activity. Thereby, the enhanced OER activity of CMP-Py(Co)@Co is attributed to the incorporation of Co2+ ions leading to rich active sites and enlarged electrochemical surface areas. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Co2+-TBPT sites have higher activity than Co2+-porphyrin sites for the OER. These results indicate that the introduction of rich active metal sites in stable and conductive CMPs could provide novel guidance for designing efficient OECs.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) is frequently affected by seasonal drought, which causes substantial declines in quality and yield. To understand the drought resistance mechanisms of S. officinarum, the main species of modern sugarcane, at a molecular level, we carried out a comparative analysis of transcriptome and metabolome profiling of the sugarcane variety Badila under drought stress (DS). Compared with control group (CG) plants, plants exposed to DS had 13,744 (6663 up-regulated and 7081 down-regulated) differentially expressed genes (DEGs). GO and KEGG analysis showed that the DEGs were enriched in photosynthesis-related pathways and most DEGs had down-regulated expression. Moreover, the chlorophyll content, photosynthesis (Photo), stomatal conductance (Cond), intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (Ci) and transpiration rate (Trmmol) were sharply decreased under DS. These results indicate that DS has a significant negative influence on photosynthesis in sugarcane. Metabolome analysis identified 166 (37 down-regulated and 129 up-regulated) significantly regulated metabolites (SRMs). Over 50% of SRMs were alkaloids, amino acids and their derivatives, and lipids. The five most significantly enriched KEGG pathways among SRMs were Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, 2-Oxocarboxylic acid metabolism, Biosynthesis of amino acids, Phenylalanine metabolism, and Arginine and proline metabolism (p < 0.05). Comparing CG with DS for transcriptome and metabolome profiling (T_CG/DS and M_CG/DS, respectively), we found three of the same KEGG-enriched pathways, namely Biosynthesis of amino acids, Phenylalanine metabolism and Arginine and proline metabolism. The potential importance of Phenylalanine metabolism and Arginine and proline metabolism was further analyzed for response to DS in sugarcane. Seven SRMs (five up-regulated and two down-regulated) and 60 DEGs (17 up-regulated and 43 down-regulated) were enriched in Phenylalanine metabolism under DS, of which novel.31261, Sspon.04G0008060-1A, Sspon.04G0008060-2B and Sspon.04G0008060-3C were significantly correlated with 7 SRMs. In Arginine and proline metabolism, eight SRMs (seven up-regulated and one down-regulated) and 63 DEGs (32 up-regulated and 31 down-regulated) were enriched, of which Sspon.01G0026110-1A (OAT) and Sspon.03G0002750-3D (P5CS) were strongly associated with proline (r > 0.99). These findings present the dynamic changes and possible molecular mechanisms of Phenylalanine metabolism as well as Arginine and proline metabolism under DS and provide a foundation for future research and sugarcane improvement.

The outstanding optoelectrical properties and high-quality factor of whispering gallery mode perovskite nanocavities make it attractive for applications in small lasers. However, efforts to make lasers with better performance have been hampered by the lack of efficient methods for the synthesis and transfer of perovskite nanocavities on desired substrate at quality required for applications. Here, we report transfer printing of perovskite nanocavities grown by chemical vapor deposition from mica substrate onto SiO2 substrate. Transferred perovskite nanocavity has an RMS roughness of ~ 1.2 nm and no thermal degradation in thermal release process. We further use femtosecond laser to excite a transferred perovskite nanocavity and measures its quality factor as high as 2580 and a lasing threshold of 27.89 µJ/cm2 which is almost unchanged as compared with pristine perovskite nanocavities. This method represents a significant step toward the realization of perovskite nanolasers with smaller sizes and better heat management as well as application in optoelectronic devices.

Ribosome-binding protein 1 (RRBP1) is a marker for colorectal, lung, esophageal and prostate cancer. However, the association between RRBP1 and bladder cancer is not completely understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression and function of RRBP1 in bladder cancer. The association between RRBP1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics, as well as the prognosis of bladder cancer was analyzed. RRBP1 expression was further analyzed in bladder cancer cell lines via reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting. RRBP1 knockdown was established using short hairpin RNAs to investigate the function of RRBP1 in T24 cells. Compared with healthy bladder tissue, RRBP1 expression levels were significantly upregulated in bladder cancer tissue. High RRBP1 expression was associated with tumor stage, lymph node metastasis and shorter overall survival time. RRBP1 protein was highly expressed in bladder cancer cell lines compared with normal SV-HUC-1 cells. Compared with the control group, RRBP1 knockdown inhibited T24 migration and invasion by downregulating the expression of C-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CCR7) protein. In conclusion, the present study indicated that RRBP1 was associated with bladder cancer migration, invasion and prognosis, and CCR7 might serve a role in the process.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the complications and clinical scores of posterior lumbar intervertebral fusion (PLIF) in middle-aged and older patients of different ages, and to assess the risk of complications of PLIF in different ages, providing a reference for clinical treatment. METHODS: The clinical data of 1 136 patients, who were more than 55 years old and underwent PLIF between June 2013 and June 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. According to the age of patients undergoing surgery, they were divided into 3 groups as 55-64 years old, 65-74 years old, and ≥75 years old. The general characteristics, comorbidities, and surgical data of the three groups were compared, with comparison the morbidity of complications. According to the minimal clinical important difference (MCID), the improvement of patient's pain visual analogue scale (VAS) score and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) score were compared. Univariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the difference of complications and the improvement of VAS and ODI scores. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for the risk factors of complications. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the number of surgical fusion segments and osteoporosis between groups ( P<0.05); there was no significant difference in gender, body mass index, operation time, preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, and comorbidities between groups ( P>0.05). All patients were followed up 6-62 months with an average of 27.4 months. Among the results of postoperative complications, there were significant differences in the total incidence of intraoperative complications, systemic complications, minor complications, and the percentage of improvement of ODI score to MCID between groups ( P<0.05); but there was no significant difference in the total incidence of complications at the end of long-term follow-up and the percentage of improvement of VAS score to MCID between groups ( P>0.05). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting the confounding factors, there were significant differences in intraoperative complications and the percentage of improvement of ODI score to MCID between 55-64 and 65-74 years old groups ( P<0.05); systemic complications, minor complications, complications at the end of long-term follow-up, and the percentage of improvement of ODI score to MCID in ≥75 years old group were significantly different from those in the other two groups ( P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age was a risk factor for systemic complications, minor complications, and complications at the end of long-term follow-up. Except for age, long operation time was a risk factor for intraoperative complications, increased number of fusion segments was a risk factor for systemic complications, the number of comorbidities was a risk factor for minor complications, and osteoporosis was a risk factor for complications at the end of long-term follow-up. CONCLUSION: The risk of surgical complications is higher in the elderly patients (≥75 years) with lumbar degenerative diseases than in the middle-aged and older patients (<75 years), while the improvements of postoperative VAS and ODI scores were similar. Under the premise of fully assessing surgical indications, PLIF has a positive effect on improving the elderly patients' quality of life.

Cryptococcal meningitis is the most common life-threatening fungal infection and is associated with high mortality in children. Amphotericin B plus flucytosine and fluconazole is the optimal current therapy. Implantation of an Ommaya reservoir for intraventricular infusion of medication and aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the treatment of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) has been reported. Intraventricular injection of amphotericin B through an Ommaya reservoir in children with cryptococcal meningitis has not been reported previously. We report two children who had cryptococcal meningitis and associated increased intracranial pressure, and were treated with an Ommaya reservoir. Both patients experienced rapid reversal of symptoms. At the time of discharge both patients had recovered and have remained asymptomatic.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a disorder characterized by degeneration of lower motor neurons and occasionally bulbar motor neurons leading to progressive limb and trunk paralysis as well as muscular atrophy. Three types of SMA are recognized depending on the age of onset, the maximum muscular activity achieved, and survivorship: SMA1, SMA2, and SMA3. The survival of motor neuron (SMN) gene has been identified as an SMA determining gene, whereas the neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) gene is considered to be a modifying factor of the severity of SMA. The main objective of this study was to analyze the deletion of SMN1 and NAIP genes in southern Chinese children with SMA. Here, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) combined with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was performed to detect the deletion of both exon 7 and exon 8 of SMN1 and exon 5 of NAIP in 62 southern Chinese children with strongly suspected clinical symptoms of SMA. All the 32 SMA1 patients and 76% (13/17) of SMA2 patients showed homozygous deletions for exon 7 and exon 8, and all the 13 SMA3 patients showed single deletion of SMN1 exon 7 along with 24% (4/17) of SMA2 patients. Eleven out of 32 (34%) SMA1 patients showed NAIP deletion, and none of SMA2 and SMA3 patients was found to have NAIP deletion. The findings of homozygous deletions of exon 7 and/or exon 8 of SMN1 gene confirmed the diagnosis of SMA, and suggested that the deletion of SMN1 exon 7 is a major cause of SMA in southern Chinese children, and that the NAIP gene may be a modifying factor for disease severity of SMA1. The molecular diagnosis system based on PCR-RFLP analysis can conveniently be applied in the clinical testing, genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis of SMA.
