Transcatheter intervention has been the preferred treatment for congenital structural heart diseases by implanting occluders into the heart defect site through minimally invasive access. Biodegradable polymers provide a promising alternative for cardiovascular implants by conferring therapeutic function and eliminating long-term complications, but inducing in situ cardiac tissue regeneration remains a substantial clinical challenge. PGAG (polydioxanone/poly (l-lactic acid)-gelatin-A5G81) occluders are prepared by covalently conjugating biomolecules composed of gelatin and layer adhesive protein-derived peptides (A5G81) to the surface of polydioxanone and poly (l-lactic acid) fibers. The polymer microfiber-biomacromolecule-peptide frame with biophysical and biochemical cues could orchestrate the biomaterial-host cell interactions, by recruiting endogenous endothelial cells, promoting their adhesion and proliferation, and polarizing immune cells into anti-inflammatory phenotypes and augmenting the release of reparative cytokines. In a porcine atrial septal defect (ASD) model, PGAG occluders promote in situ tissue regeneration by accelerating surface endothelialization and regulating immune response, which mitigate inflammation and fibrosis formation, and facilitate the fusion of occluder with surrounding heart tissue. Collectively, this work highlights the modulation of cell-biomaterial interactions for tissue regeneration in cardiac defect models, ensuring endothelialization and extracellular matrix remodeling on polymeric scaffolds. Bioinspired cell-material interface offers a highly efficient and generalized approach for constructing bioactive coatings on medical devices.

Background: As the global burden of hypertension continues to increase, early diagnosis and treatment play an increasingly important role in improving the prognosis of patients. In this study, we developed and evaluated a method for predicting abnormally high blood pressure (HBP) from infrared (upper body) remote thermograms using a deep learning (DL) model. Methods: The data used in this cross-sectional study were drawn from a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pilot cohort study comprising data from 252 volunteers recruited from 22 July to 4 September 2020. Original video files were cropped at 5 frame intervals to 3,800 frames per slice. Blood pressure (BP) information was measured using a Welch Allyn 71WT monitor prior to infrared imaging, and an abnormal increase in BP was defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mmHg. The PanycNet DL model was developed using a deep neural network to predict abnormal BP based on infrared thermograms. Results: A total of 252 participants were included, of which 62.70% were male and 37.30% were female. The rate of abnormally high HBP was 29.20% of the total number. In the validation group (upper body), precision, recall, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values were 0.930, 0.930, and 0.983 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.904-1.000], respectively, and the head showed the strongest predictive ability with an AUC of 0.868 (95% CI: 0.603-0.994). Conclusions: This is the first technique that can perform screening for hypertension without contact using existing equipment and data. It is anticipated that this technique will be suitable for mass screening of the population for abnormal BP in public places and home BP monitoring.

Background: Most patients undergoing left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) are older adult individuals with atrial fibrillation (AF) and many comorbidities, which may elevate the risk for complications associated with contrast agents with the fluoroscopic image-guided procedure. This retrospective cohort study of patients with AF at high risk for use of contrast agents compared the feasibility and safety of LAAC using percutaneous and non-fluoroscopic procedure with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) as the only image guidance relative to those under fluoroscopic image guidance. Methods: In this retrospective study, we enrolled 126 patients with AF who underwent LAAC from September 2017 to December 2020. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the imaging guidance modality: a TEE group (n=32) and a fluoroscopic group (n=94). We analyzed the differences in complete closure rates and device- and procedure-related complications between the 2 groups. Continuous variables were assessed using the Student t-test or Mann-Whitney test, while categorical variables were evaluated using Pearson chi-squared test or Fisher exact test. Propensity-score matching was used to adjust for baseline differences. Results: Propensity-score matching yielded 25 pairs of patients with similarly distributed age (72.9±6.9 vs. 73.1±4.9 years; P=0.925), gender (10:15 vs. 11:14; P>0.99), weight (68.3±11.2 vs. 68.1±12.3 kg; P=0.948), and alanine aminotransferase level (20.0±9.8 vs. 22.5±14.2 U/L; P=0.482). The LAA was successfully occluded in all patients, and the TEE group showed similar results to the fluoroscopic group in terms of success rate (100% vs. 100%; P>0.99) and hospitalization duration [5.0 (IQ1-IQ3: 3.0-7.0) vs. 5.0 (IQ1-IQ3: 3.0-6.0) days; P=0.498]. The groups also demonstrated comparable complication rates, with 1 (4.2%) case of pericardial effusion and 1 (4.2%) case of residual shunt in the TEE group, and 5 (20%) cases of residual shunt, 1 (4.2%) case of pericardial effusion, 1 (4.2%) case of myocardial infarction, and 1 (4.2%) case of access-related complications in the fluoroscopic group. There were no deaths. The overall incidence rate of procedure-related complications (6.2% vs. 18.1%, P=0.153) at mean 22.2±4.5 months follow-up between the 2 groups was similar. Conclusions: In patients with AF of high risk for use of contrast agents, LAAC under non-fluoroscopic guidance appears feasible and safe with similar outcomes to that under fluoroscopic guidance.

Background: The weekend effect refers to the mortality difference for patients admitted/operated on weekends compared to those on weekdays. The study aimed to provide new evidence on the impact of the weekend effect on acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Methods: Primary endpoints were operative mortality, stroke, paraplegia, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). A meta-analysis of current evidence on the weekend effect was first conducted. Analyses based on single-center data (retrospective, case-control study) were further performed. Results: A total of 18,462 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that mortality was not significantly higher for ATAAD on weekends compared to that on weekdays [odds ratio (OR): 1.16, 95% CI: 0.94-1.43]. The single-center cohort included 479 patients, which also showed no significant differences in primary and secondary outcomes between the two groups. The unadjusted OR for weekend group over weekday group was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.40-1.86, P=0.777). The adjusted OR for weekend group was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.41-2.02, P=0.880) controlling for significant preoperative factors, and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.30-1.74, P=0.24) controlling for significant preoperative and operative factors altogether. In PSM matched cohort, the operative mortality was still comparable between the weekend group [10 (7.2%)] and weekday group [9 (6.5%)] (P=1.000). No significant survival difference was observed between the two groups (P=0.970). Conclusions: The weekend effect was not found to be applicable to ATAAD. However, clinicians should be cautious of the weekend effect as it is disease-specific and may vary across healthcare systems.

The treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) remains a substantial challenge due to excessive inflammation, massive cell death, and restricted regenerative potential, leading to maladaptive healing process and eventually heart failure. Current strategies of regulating inflammation or improving cardiac tissue regeneration have limited success. Herein, a hybrid hydrogel coassembled by acellular cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) and immunomodulatory glycopeptide is developed for endogenous tissue regeneration after MI. The hydrogel constructs a niche recapitulating the architecture of native ECM for attracting host cell homing, controlling macrophage differentiation via glycopeptide unit, and promoting endotheliocyte proliferation by enhancing the macrophage-endotheliocyte crosstalk, which coordinate the innate healing mechanism for cardiac tissue regeneration. In a rodent MI model, the hybrid hydrogel successfully orchestrates a proreparative response indicated by enhanced M2 macrophage polarization, increased angiogenesis, and improved cardiomyocyte survival, which alleviates infarct size, improves wall thicknesses, and enhances cardiac contractility. Furthermore, the safety and effectiveness of the hydrogel are demonstrated in a porcine MI model, wherein proteomics verifies the regulation of immune response, proangiogenesis, and accelerated healing process. Collectively, the injectable composite hydrogel serving as an immunomodulatory niche for promoting cell homing and proliferation, inflammation modulation, tissue remodeling, and function restoration provides an effective strategy for endogenous cardiac repair.

Objectives: Isolated abdominal aortic dissection (IAAD) is extremely rare, with its optimal treatment and intervention timing remaining poorly understood. We aimed to study the natural history of IAAD and facilitate better clinical decision. Methods: Consecutive patients admitted to our institution from January 2016 to April 2021 were enrolled and followed up prospectively. All-cause death was taken as the primary endpoint. Results: A total of 68 patients with IAAD were included. The mean age at presentation was 61.2 ± 14.8 (Range: 26.0, 93.0) years and 55 (80.9%) were male. A total of 38 (55.9%) patients were treated conservatively, 27 (39.7%) received endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), and 3 (4.4%) underwent open surgery. After a mean follow-up of 2.4 years (Range: 0.1, 5.5), 9 (13.2%) patients died, 8 of whom (21.0%) were treated conservatively and 1 EVAR (3.7%). Compared with EVAR/open surgery, patient treated conservatively had a much worse survival (p = 0.043). There was no significant difference between different IAAD aortic sizes regarding mortality (p = 0.220). Patients with completely thrombosed false lumen fared improved survival rate, followed by partial thrombosis and patency, respectively, although not significantly (p = 0.190). No significant difference was observed between male and female concerning survival rate (p = 0.970). Patients without symptoms had a significantly improved survival (p = 0.048). Conclusion: On the basis of patients' preference and surgeons' experience, a more aggressive treatment regimen for IAAD should be considered, with EVAR being the first choice, especially for those with persistent symptoms and patent false lumen, regardless of sex, age, or aortic size.

Since ferroptosis was first described as an iron-dependent cell death pattern in 2012, there has been increasing interest in ferroptosis research. In view of the immense potential of ferroptosis in treatment efficacy and its rapid development in recent years, it is essential to track and summarize the latest research in this field. However, few writers have been able to draw on any systematic investigation into this field based on human body organ systems. Hence, in this review, we provide a comprehensive description of the latest progress in unveiling the roles and functions, as well as the therapeutic potential of ferroptosis, in treating diseases from the aspects of 11 human body organ systems (including the nervous system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, reproductive system, integumentary system, skeletal system, immune system, cardiovascular system, muscular system, and endocrine system) in the hope of providing references for further understanding the pathogenesis of related diseases and bringing an innovative train of thought for reformative clinical treatment.

Ischemic damage to the central nervous system (CNS) is a catastrophic postoperative complication of aortic occlusion subsequent to cardiovascular surgery that can cause brain impairment and sometimes even paraplegia. Over recent years, numerous studies have investigated techniques for protecting and revascularizing the nervous system during intraoperative ischemia; however, owing to a lack of knowledge of the physiological distinctions between the brain and spinal cord, as well as the limited availability of testing techniques and treatments for ischemia-reperfusion injury, the cause of brain and spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury remains poorly understood, and no adequate response steps are currently available in the clinic. Given the limited ability of the CNS to repair itself, it is of great clinical value to make full use of the proliferative and differentiation potential of stem cells to repair nerves in degenerated and necrotic regions by stem cell transplantation or mobilization, thereby introducing a novel concept for the treatment of severe CNS ischemia-reperfusion injury. This review summarizes the most recent advances in stem cell therapy for ischemia-reperfusion injury in the brain and spinal cord, aiming to advance basic research and the clinical use of stem cell therapy as a promising treatment for this condition.

OBJECTIVE: The right axillary artery is currently recommended for arterial cannulation in surgery for acute type A aortic dissection. However, the feasibility of cannulation on a dissected right axillary artery remains undetermined. The objective was to examine the feasibility of cannulation on a dissected right axillary artery. METHODS: From 2016 to 2020, 835 patients who underwent acute type A aortic dissection repair were included in this study. Cannulation strategy and perioperative outcomes of patients who did and did not have right axillary artery dissection were compared. Propensity score matching and logistic regression were applied. RESULTS: A total of 124 patients had right axillary artery dissection, and 711 patients did not. Direct right axillary artery cannulation was used for cardiopulmonary bypass in the majority of patients, but with a lower rate in patients with right axillary artery dissection (n = 88 [71.0%] vs n = 579 [81.4%], P = .007). Right axillary artery cannulation failure (n = 3 [2.4%] vs n = 5 [0.7%], P = .102) and related complications (n = 1 [0.8%] vs n = 6 [0.8%], P = 1.000) were rare in both groups. In-hospital mortality (n = 18 [14.5%] vs n = 59 [8.3%], P = .027) and stroke (n = 14 [11.3%] vs n = 42 [5.9%], P = .027) were significantly higher in the right axillary artery dissection group, but after propensity score matching, in-hospital outcomes were comparable. Right axillary artery dissection was not a risk factor for mortality, stroke, right axillary artery cannulation not performed, or right axillary artery cannulation failure. CONCLUSIONS: Direct right axillary artery cannulation is feasible for most patients with acute type A aortic dissection with right axillary artery dissection.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate surgical modalities and outcomes in patients with type A aortic dissection involving arch anomalies. Method: Patients with type A aortic dissection who underwent surgical treatment at our center between January 2017 and 31 December 2020 were selected for this retrospective analysis. Data including computed tomography (CT), surgical records, and cardiopulmonary bypass records were analyzed. Perioperatively survived patients were followed up, and long-term mortality and aortic re-interventions were recorded. Result: A total of 81 patients with arch anomalies were included, 35 with "bovine" anomalies, 23 with an aberrant right subclavian artery, 22 with an isolated left vertebral artery, and one with a right-sided arch + aberrant left subclavian artery. The strategies of arch management and cannulation differed according to the anatomic variation of the aortic arch. In total, seven patients (9%) died after surgery. Patients with "bovine" anomalies had a higher perioperative mortality rate (14%) and incidence of neurological complications (16%). Overall, four patients died during the follow-up period, with a 6-year survival rate of 94.6% (70/74). A total of four patients underwent aortic re-intervention during the follow-up period; before the re-intervention, three received the en bloc technique (13.6% 3/22) and one received hybrid therapy (11.1% 1/9). Conclusion: With complete preservation and reconstruction of the supra-arch vessels, patients with type A aortic dissection combining arch anomalies can achieve a favorable perioperative prognostic outcome. Patients who received the en bloc technique are more likely to require aortic re-intervention than patients who underwent total arch replacement with a four-branched graft vessel. Cannulation strategies should be tailored according to the variation of anatomy, but routine cannulation with the right axillary artery can still be performed in most patients with arch anomalies, even for patients with an aberrant right subclavian artery.

Compared with the central nervous system, the adult peripheral nervous system possesses a remarkable regenerative capacity, which is due to the strong plasticity of Schwann cells (SCs) in peripheral nerves. After peripheral nervous injury, SCs de-differentiate and transform into repair phenotypes, and play a critical role in axonal regeneration, myelin formation, and clearance of axonal and myelin debris. In view of the limited self-repair capability of SCs for long segment defects of peripheral nerve defects, it is of great clinical value to supplement SCs in necrotic areas through gene modification or stem cell transplantation or to construct tissue-engineered nerve combined with bioactive scaffolds to repair such tissue defects. Based on the developmental lineage of SCs and the gene regulation network after peripheral nerve injury (PNI), this review summarizes the possibility of using SCs constructed by the latest gene modification technology to repair PNI. The therapeutic effects of tissue-engineered nerve constructed by materials combined with Schwann cells resembles autologous transplantation, which is the gold standard for PNI repair. Therefore, this review generalizes the research progress of biomaterials combined with Schwann cells for PNI repair. Based on the difficulty of donor sources, this review also discusses the potential of "unlimited" provision of pluripotent stem cells capable of directing differentiation or transforming existing somatic cells into induced SCs. The summary of these concepts and therapeutic strategies makes it possible for SCs to be used more effectively in the repair of PNI.

Background: The management of malperfusion is vital to improve the outcomes of surgery for acute type A acute aortic dissection (ATAAD). Open arch repair under hypothermic circulatory arrest with selective antegrade cerebral perfusion (HCA/sACP) is safe and efficient but associated with inevitable hypothermia and ischemia-reperfusion injury. The aortic balloon occlusion (ABO) technique is shown to be organ protective by allowing higher temperature and shorter circulatory arrest time. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this new technique for ATAAD patients with lower body malperfusion. Methods: Between January 2013 and November 2020, 355 ATAAD patients with lower body malperfusion who underwent arch repair in our institute were enrolled. The patients were divided into 2 groups: ABO group (n = 85) and HCA/sACP group (n = 271). Propensity score matching was performed to correct baseline differences. Results: Using the propensity score matching, 85 pairs were generated. Circulatory arrest time was significantly lower in the ABO group compared with the HCA/sACP group (median, 8 vs. 22 min; p < 0.001). The incidence of in-hospital mortality (10.6 vs. 12.9%; p = 0.812), stroke (7.1 vs. 7.1%; p = 1.000), dialysis (25.9 vs. 32.9%; p = 0.183), hepatic dysfunction (52.9 vs. 57.6%; p = 0.537), tracheostomy (4.7 vs. 2.4%; p = 0.682), paraplegia (1.2 vs. 4.7%; p = 0.368) were comparable between ABO and HCA/sACP groups. Other outcomes and major adverse events were comparable. The multivariable logistic analysis did not recognize ABO technique protective against any major adverse outcomes. Conclusions: For ATAAD patients with lower body malperfusion, the ABO technique allows the performance of arch repair with frozen elephant trunk (FET) under higher temperature and shorter circulatory arrest time. However, ABO technique did not improve perioperative outcomes. Future studies are warranted to evaluate the efficacy of this technique.

Background: Coronary malperfusion (CM) secondary to acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is considered rare but has a high mortality rate. This study examined the incidence, management, and outcomes of patients with CM secondary to ATAAD and proposes a modified Neri classification. Methods: Between 2015 and 2020, out of 1018 patients who underwent surgical repair for ATAAD, 137 presented with CM, including 68 (49.6%), 43 (31.3%), and 15 (10.9%) with Neri types A, B, and C, respectively, and 11 (8.0%) with coronary orifice intimal tear (COIT), which we consider a novel category. Results: The occurrence rate of CM was 13.4%. CM was associated with higher in-hospital mortality (18.2% vs. 7.8%, p < 0.001). For Neri type A (98.5%) and most type B lesions (72.1%), coronary repair was adequate. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was necessary for type B patients unsuited for repair (23.2%) and for all type C patients (100%). Repair of COIT was possible (45.5%). The in-hospital mortality rates differed significantly among the four lesion groups (p = 0.006). Conclusions: The occurrence of CM secondary to ATAAD may be more frequent than previously reported. Surgical management based on lesion classification achieved acceptable outcomes. Repair was adequate for Neri type A and most type B lesions. Other type B and type C lesions could be treated by CABG. Coronary orifice intimal tear is a unique set of lesions, for which orifice repair was also possible.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, has drawn an increasing amount of attention since it was first mentioned in 2012 and is found to play a significant role in the treatment of certain diseases. Our study is aimed at analysing the scientific output of ferroptosis research and at driving future research into novel publications. Publications focused on ferroptosis were retrieved from the SCI-EXPANDED database of the Web of Science Core Collection and were screened according to inclusion criteria. CiteSpace V and Microsoft Excel 2016 were used to evaluate and visualize the results, including generating network maps and analysing annual publications, country, category, references and cocited references, and keywords. As of October 1, 2021, a total of 1690 original articles related to ferroptosis were included, and the overall trend of the number of publications rapidly increased. Among the common categories in the field of ferroptosis, the most common category was biochemistry and molecular biology. Worldwide, China and the United States were the leading countries for research production. The retrieved 1690 publications received 44,650 citations, with an average of 26.42 citations per paper (October 1, 2021). By citation analysis, Scott J Dixon's article in 2012 was the most symbolic reference and the earliest publication in the field of ferroptosis, with the highest citation rate (2709 times). Among the most common keywords, most were related to the mechanisms and regulatory networks of ferroptosis. Furthermore, with accumulating evidence demonstrating the role of ferroptosis in cancers and other diseases, inducing ferroptosis in clinical treatment is becoming a new research focus that should be closely monitored.

BACKGROUND: Early prediction of bronchitis obliterans (BO) is of great significance to the improvement of the long-term prognosis of children caused by refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP). This study aimed to establish a nomogram model to predict the risk of BO in children due to RMPP. METHODS: A retrospective observation was conducted to study the clinical data of children with RMPP (1-14 years old) during acute infection. According to whether there is BO observed in the bronchoscope, children were divided into BO and the non-BO groups. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to construct the nomogram model. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-one children with RMPP were finally included, of which 65 (46.0%) children with RMPP were complicated by BO. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, WBC count, ALB level, consolidation range exceeding 2/3 of lung lobes, timing of macrolides, glucocorticoids or fiber bronchoscopy and plastic bronchitis were independent influencing factors for the occurrence of BO and were incorporated into the nomogram. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) value of nomogram was 0.899 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.848-0.950). The Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed good calibration of the nomogram (p = 0.692). CONCLUSION: A nomogram model found by seven risk factor was successfully constructed and can use to early prediction of children with BO due to RMPP.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to comprehensively analyze all the literature related to aortic dissection (AD) in the past decade using Web Scrapping technology from PubMed, revealing the research dynamics in this field. METHODS: Data were retrieved and downloaded from PubMed with search strategy as "(aortic dissection [Title/Abstract]) AND (2010[EDAT]: 2020[EDAT])". Information on the PMID, journal name, title, number of citations, publication year, authors, affiliations, abstract, study type, and keywords of the research was recorded. RESULTS: A total of 7,470 publications were identified. Most of the articles were published in J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg; Japan was the country with the largest publications number; the USA was far ahead of other countries regarding the highly cited studies; Yale University and Baylor College of Medicine took the first place for publishing most of the highly cited articles; the most frequently cited article is the 2014 ESC Guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of aortic diseases; most of the clinical trials were published on J Vasc Surg; John A. Elefteriades ranked first by cumulative publication numbers; Christoph A. Nienaber took the lead by both cumulative citations and impact factors; Dianna M. Milewicz was the only female researcher on all the three ranking lists; the most common keywords in aortic dissection were Treatment Outcome and Retrospective Studies. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides interesting insights into the AD scientific landscape in recent 10 years and generates some objective evidence for comprehensive understanding and evaluation of this field. This investigation may ultimately inform managers, researchers and policymakers.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of femoral artery cannulation as an alternative to axillary artery cannulation, we retrospectively compared outcomes between patients with axillary or femoral artery cannulation during open aortic arch repair for type A aortic dissection (TAAD). METHODS: Between January 2014 and January 2019, 646 patients underwent open aortic arch repair with circulatory arrest for TAAD using antegrade selective cerebral perfusion (SACP) and were divided into two groups according to the site of arterial cannulation: an axillary artery group (axillary group, n=558) or a femoral artery group (femoral group, n=88). The axillary artery was considered as the primary cannulation site, and the femoral artery was used as an alternative when axillary artery cannulation was deemed unsuitable or had failed. Propensity score matching was performed to correct baseline differences. RESULTS: After propensity score matching, the patients' characteristics were comparable between groups (n=85 in each). The incidence of in-hospital mortality (10.6% vs. 14.1%; P=0.642) and stroke (3.5% vs. 5.9%; P=0.720) were comparable between the axillary and femoral groups. The incidence of newly required dialysis was lower in the femoral group, but the difference was not statistically significant (34.1% vs. 20.0%; P=0.050). Other outcomes and major adverse events were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: Femoral artery cannulation produced similar perioperative outcomes to axillary cannulation after open arch repair for TAAD. The femoral artery can be used as a safe and effective alternative to the axillary artery for arterial cannulation in TAAD patients undergoing open arch repair.

Cardiovascular disease is still one of the leading causes of death in the world, and heart transplantation is the current major treatment for end-stage cardiovascular diseases. However, because of the shortage of heart donors, new sources of cardiac regenerative medicine are greatly needed. The prominent development of tissue engineering using bioactive materials has creatively laid a direct promising foundation. Whereas, how to precisely pattern a cardiac structure with complete biological function still requires technological breakthroughs. Recently, the emerging three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology for tissue engineering has shown great advantages in generating micro-scale cardiac tissues, which has established its impressive potential as a novel foundation for cardiovascular regeneration. Whether 3D bioprinted hearts can replace traditional heart transplantation as a novel strategy for treating cardiovascular diseases in the future is a frontier issue. In this review article, we emphasize the current knowledge and future perspectives regarding available bioinks, bioprinting strategies and the latest outcome progress in cardiac 3D bioprinting to move this promising medical approach towards potential clinical implementation.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a public catastrophe and global concern. The main symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, myalgia, fatigue and lower respiratory tract infection signs. Almost all populations are susceptible to the virus, and the basic reproduction number (R0) is 2.8-3.9. The fight against COVID-19 should have two aspects: one is the treatment of infected patients, and the other is the mobilization of the society to avoid the spread of the virus. The treatment of patients includes supportive treatment, antiviral treatment, and oxygen therapy. For patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and circulatory support are recommended. Plasma therapy and traditional Chinese medicine have also achieved good outcomes. This review is intended to summarize the research on this new coronavirus, to analyze the similarities and differences between COVID-19 and previous outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and to provide guidance regarding new methods of prevention, diagnosis and clinical treatment based on autodock simulations. METHODS: This review compares the multifaceted characteristics of the three coronaviruses including COVID-19, SARS and MERS. Our researchers take the COVID-19, SARS, and MERS as key words and search literatures in the Pubmed database. We compare them horizontally and vertically which respectively means concluding the individual characteristics of each coronavirus and comparing the similarities and differences between the three coronaviruses. RESULTS: We searched for studies on each outbreak and their solutions and found that the main biological differences among SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV are in ORF1a and the sequence of gene spike coding protein-S. We also found that the types and severity of clinical symptoms vary, which means that the diagnosis and nursing measures also require differentiation. In addition to the common route of transmission including airborne transmission, these three viruses have their own unique routes of transmission such as fecal-oral route of transmission COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: In evolutionary history, these three coronaviruses have some similar biological features as well as some different mutational characteristics. Their receptors and routes of transmission are not all the same, which makes them different in clinical features and treatments. We discovered through the autodock simulations that Met124 plays a key role in the efficiency of drugs targeting ACE2, such as remdesivir, chloroquine, ciclesonide and niclosamide, and may be a potential target in COVID-19.

Epidemic prevention and control measures for the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has achieved significant results. As of 8 April 2020, 22,073 infection cases of COVID-19 among healthcare workers from 52 countries had been reported to WHO. COVID-19 has strong infectivity, high transmission speeds, and causes serious infection among healthcare worker. Burns are an acute-care condition, and burn treatment needs to be initiated before COVID-19 infection status can be excluded. The key step to infection prevention is to identify risk points of infection exposure, strengthen the protection against those risk points, and formulate an appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocol. Following an in-depth study of the latest literature on COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment, we reviewed the protocols surrounding hospitalization of patients with extensive burns (area≥50 %) in our hospital from February 2009 to February 2019 and, in accordance with the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19, developed an algorithm for protection during diagnosis and treatment of burns. Therefore, the aspects of medical protection and the diagnosis and treatment of burns appear to be particularly important during the prevention and control of the COVID-19. This algorithm was followed for 4 patients who received emergency treatment in February 2020 and were hospitalized. All healthcare worker were protected according to the three-tiered protective measures, and there was no nosocomial infection. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the early stages of emergency treatment for patients with extensive burns requiring the establishment of venous access for rehydration, endotracheal intubation or tracheostomy, wound treatment, and surgery are the risk points for exposure to infection. The implementation of effective, appropriate-grade protection and formulation of practical treatment protocols can increase protection of healthcare worke and reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection exposure.
