RESUMEN

A model based on geographical information systems for mapping the risk of fascioliasis was developed for the southern part of Espírito Santo state, Brazil. The determinants investigated were precipitation, temperature, elevation, slope, soil type and land use. Weightings and grades were assigned to determinants and their categories according to their relevance with respect to fascioliasis. Theme maps depicting the spatial distribution of risk areas indicate that over 50% of southern Espírito Santo is either at high or at very high risk for fascioliasis. These areas were found to be characterized by comparatively high temperature but relatively low slope, low precipitation and low elevation corresponding to periodically flooded grasslands or soils that promote water retention.

RESUMEN

The objective of the present study was to investigate the dynamics and profile of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) in an old colonization area in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Health departments of municipalities in the Central-Southern region that had notified cases to the Ministry of Health's Notifable Diseases Information System between 1997 and 2002 were contacted to obtain data. Out of the 119 cases recorded, 51 patients were visited for an interview and inspection of the environment. The cases of ACL exhibited a profile similar to that observed in other Brazilian cities, affecting individuals of both genders, all age groups and different occupational categories, especially students. Risk activities were reported by 56.9% of the interviewees and 84.3% had never left their homeland. Water courses, chicken coops, bamboo plantations and different fruit trees including banana plants and mango trees were frequently observed in the surrounding environment. Most of the interviewees had not noted any environmental changes prior to becoming sick. Domestic animals were present in all homes, but only dogs presented lesions suggestive of the disease. These were on different occasions that rarely preceded or coincided with the human cases. The possible existence of distinct transmission cycles, i.e. one for canines and another for humans, was discussed.

RESUMEN

The potential of adultrap for capture of muscoid dipterans was evaluated by comparison with the trap described by Ferreira (1978) and adapted by Fraga and d' Almeida (2005). Sardine baits were used in both traps. The Wilcoxon two-sample test was used for trap comparison. A total of 8,909 muscoid dipterans was caught, 57.51% of them by the adultrap. However, there was no significant difference (p = 0.147) between trap efficiency. From the total of sarcophagids, calliphorids, muscids and other families of muscoid flies, 79, 68, 29 and 31% were caught by adultrap, respectively. Statistical difference (p = 0.002) between traps was found only for Sarcophagidae. The results of adultrap(R) were similar to the model used by Fraga and d'Almeida (2005), thus validating its use for seasonal fluctuation studies of muscoid dipterans. However, adultrap has the highest efficiency in capturing Sarcophagidae flies.
