RESUMEN

Many video-based eye trackers rely on detecting and tracking ocular features, a task that can be negatively affected by a number of individual or environmental factors. In this context, the aim of this study was to practically evaluate how the use of a scleral contact lens with two integrated nearinfrared lasers (denoted CLP) could improve the tracking robustness in difficult lighting conditions, particularly outdoor ones. We assessed the ability of the CLP (on a model eye) to detect the lasers and to deduce a gaze position with an accuracy better than 1° under four lighting conditions (1 lx, 250 lx, 50 klux and alternating 1lx /250 lx) on an artificial eye. These results were compared to the ability of a commercial eye tracker (Pupil Core) to detect the pupil on human eyes with a confidence score equal to or greater than 0.9. CLP provided good results in all conditions (tracking accuracy and detection rates). In comparison, the Pupil Core performed well in all indoor conditions (99% detection) but failed in outdoor conditions (9.85% detection). In conclusion, the CLP presents strong potential to improve the reliability of video-based eyetrackers in outdoor conditions by providing easy trackable feature.

RESUMEN

Recording a video scene as seen by an observer, materializing where is focused his visual attention and allowing an external person to point at a given object in this scene, could be beneficial for various applications such as medical education or remote training. Such a versatile device, although tested at the experimental laboratory demonstrator stage, has never been integrated in a compact and portable way in a real environment. In this context, we built a low-cost, light-weight, head-mounted device integrating a miniature camera and a laser pointer that can be remotely controlled or servo-controlled by an eye tracker. Two motorizations were implemented and tested (pan/tilt and Rilsey-prisms-based). The video was both recorded locally and transmitted wirelessly. Risley prisms allowed finer remote control of camera or laser pointer orientation (0.1° vs. 0.35°), but data processing and Wi-Fi transmission incur significant latency (~0.5 s) limiting the servo-controlling by eye movements. The laser beam was spatially shaped by a Diffractive Optical Element to facilitate object illumination or recognition. With this first proof-of-concept prototype, the data stream needs to be optimized to make full use of the eye tracker, but this versatile device can find various applications in education, healthcare or research.

RESUMEN

In this paper we present an infrared laser pointer, consisting of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a diffractive optical element (DOE), encapsulated into a scleral contact lens (SCL). The VCSEL is powered remotely by inductive coupling from a primary antenna embedded into an eyewear frame. The DOE is used either to collimate the laser beam or to project a pattern image at a chosen distance in front of the eye. We detail the different SCL constitutive blocks, how they are manufactured and assembled. We particularly emphasize the various technological challenges related to their encapsulation in the reduced volume of the SCL, while keeping the pupil free. Finally, we describe how the laser pointer operates, what are its performances (e.g. collimation, image formation) and how it can be used efficiently in various application fields such as visual assistance and augmented reality.

RESUMEN

Oculometric data, such as gaze direction, pupil size and accommodative change, play a key role nowadays in the analysis of cognitive load and attentional activities, in particular with the development of Integrated Visual Augmentation Systems in many application domains, such as health, defense and industry. Such measurements are most frequently obtained by different devices, most of them requiring steady eye and body positions and controlled lighting conditions. Recent advances in smart contact lens (SCL) technology have demonstrated the ability to achieve highly reliable and accurate measurements, preserving user mobility, for instance in measuring gaze direction. In this paper, we discuss how these three key functions can be implemented and combined in the same SCL, considering the limited volume and energy consumption constraints. Some technical options are discussed and compared in terms of their ability to be implemented, taking advantage of recent developments in the field.

RESUMEN

We present a new eye-tracking and target designation device based on a contact lens incorporating a pair of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). We describe the operating principle, the manufacturing process and characterize the impact of the VCSELs encapsulation on their optical properties. We then describe how such device can be incorporated into an eye-wear or a visual augmented system. We compare two different detection set-ups, the first using a camera and the second a position sensitive device, both illustrating different laser beam detection modes. We analyze their performances in terms of angular accuracy, speed, compactness, manufacturability, compared to current conventional eye-tracking systems. We emphasize how the use of two VCSELs and the control of their orientation during the encapsulation can simplify their integration in host systems and improve the gaze detection performance. Finally, we describe various embodiments and discuss potential improvements that can be expected in future systems.

This paper shows how a phase only spatial light modulator (SLM) can be used to implement compact, wide field of view (FOV) projection systems, using a foveal imaging approach. The SLM is tested in two different configurations. First, as a wavefront corrector to locally compensate aberrations in wide angle projection, when illuminated by a white (RGB) light source. Second, as re-configurable diffractive optical element (DOE) to display phase computer generated holograms (CGHs) of wide angle images, that include aberration corrections for peripheral regions of interest (ROI) of the output image, when illuminated by a coherent source. Finally, the foveal projection system is coupled with a commercial combiner to project 11° ×4° virtual images at 2~m and assess the foveal correction method on different ROIs in the FOV.

We present the design, fabrication, and test of a multipurpose integrated circuit (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) in AMS 0.35 µm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology. This circuit is embedded in a scleral contact lens, combined with photodiodes enabling the gaze direction detection when illuminated and wirelessly powered by an eyewear. The gaze direction is determined by means of a centroid computation from the measured photocurrents. The ASIC is used simultaneously to detect specific eye blinking sequences to validate target designations, for instance. Experimental measurements and validation are performed on a scleral contact lens prototype integrating four infrared photodiodes, mounted on a mock-up eyeball, and combined with an artificial eyelid. The eye-tracker has an accuracy of 0.2°, i.e., 2.5 times better than current mobile video-based eye-trackers, and is robust with respect to process variations, operating time, and supply voltage. Variations of the computed gaze direction transmitted to the eyewear, when the eyelid moves, are detected and can be interpreted as commands based on blink duration or using blinks alternation on both eyes.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we present some thoughts about the recent developments, made possible by technological advances and miniaturisation of connected visual prostheses, linked to the visual system, operating at different level of this one, on the retina as well as in the visual cortex. While these objects represent a great hope for people with impaired vision to recover partial vision, we show how this technology could also act on the functional vision of well sighted persons to improve or increase their visual performance. In addition to the impact on our cognitive and attentional mechanisms, such an operation when it originates outside the natural real visual field (e.g. cybernetics) raises a number of questions about the development and use of such implants or prostheses in the future.


Nous présentons dans ce compte rendu quelques réflexions liées aux développements récents, rendus possible grâce aux progrès technologiques et à la miniaturisation, de prothèses visuelles connectées, liées au système visuel et pouvant intervenir à différents endroits de celui-ci, aussi bien sur la rétine qu'au niveau du cortex visuel. Si ces objets constituent un grand espoir, pour les personnes mal, ou non-voyantes, de pouvoir récupérer une vision partielle, on montre comment cette technologie pourrait également agir sur la vision fonctionnelle de bien-voyants afin d'en améliorer ou augmenter les performances. Outre l'impact sur nos mécanismes cognitifs et attentionnels, une telle intervention lorsqu'elle trouve son origine hors du champ visuel naturel (par exemple cybernétique) pose un certain nombre de questions sur le développement et l'utilisation de tels implants ou prothèses dans le futur.

RESUMEN

We present analytical and experimental results of the microstructuring of movie theater metallic screens. Our objective is to maintain the polarization state of reflected light and to control the distribution of light intensity avoiding hotspots. We derive analytical solutions of surface functions with an axial symmetry (kernel) that produces isotropic and Lambertian scattering. Then we model the diffraction that can occur with such kernels, ranging from a few microns to several hundred microns, and we give illustrations when illuminated by laser beams corresponding to future use of laser projectors. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges associated with the tiling of such kernels and their manufacturing.

RESUMEN

Most eye trackers nowadays are video-based, which allows for a relatively simple and non-invasive approach but also imposes several constraints in terms of necessary computing power and conditions of use (e.g., lighting, spectacles, etc.). We introduce a new eye tracker using a scleral lens equipped with photodiodes and an eyewear with active illumination. The direction of gaze is obtained from the weighted average of photocurrents (centroid) and communicated through an optical link. After discussing the optimum photodiodes configuration (number, layout) and associated lighting (collimated, Lambertian), we present prototypes demonstrating the high performances possibilities (0.11° accuracy when placed on an artificial eye) and wireless optical communication.

In this paper, we demonstrate the first attempt of encapsulating a flexible micro battery into a contact lens to implement an eye-tracker. The paper discusses how to scale the battery to power various circuits embedded in the contact lens, such as ASIC, photodiodes, etc., as well as how to combine the battery with external harvested energy sources. The fabricated ring battery has a surface area of 0.75 cm2 yielding an areal capacity of 43 µAh·cm-2 at 20C. Based on simulated 0.35-µm CMOS ASIC power consumption, this value is large enough to allow powering the ASIC for 3 minutes. The functioning of the micro battery is demonstrated by powering an orange LED.

Random-dot stereograms have been widely used to explore the neural mechanisms underlying binocular vision. Although they are a powerful tool to stimulate motion-in-depth (MID) perception, published results report some difficulties in the capacity to perceive MID generated by random-dot stereograms. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the performance of MID perception could be improved using an appropriate stimulus design. Sixteen inexperienced observers participated in the experiment. A training session was carried out to improve the accuracy of MID detection before the experiment. Four aspects of stimulus design were investigated: presence of a static reference, background texture, relative disparity, and stimulus contrast. Participants' performance in MID direction discrimination was recorded and compared to evaluate whether varying these factors helped MID perception. Results showed that only the presence of background texture had a significant effect on MID direction perception. This study provides suggestions for the design of 3D stimuli in order to facilitate MID perception.

Liquid crystal (LC) tunable lenses have been extensively studied and used in various applications, however, most of them have been evaluated regardless of their optical imaging quality, in particular, concerning their intrinsic diffuse scattering. In this paper, we investigate the impact of such impairments when LC lenses are used as tunable elements in a depth-from-focus algorithm (DfF). We attempt to analyze these effects in order to design LC lenses that mitigate their impact on the imaging quality. For this purpose, we designed various lenses to evaluate several parameters such as optical, electrical, manufacturing, etc., according to their implementations in a near-pixel DfF architecture.

PURPOSE: We investigated the impact of target properties on vertical fusion amplitude (VFA) using a 3D display platform; the performance of the subjects allowed us to assess how central and peripheral retina regions interact during the fusion process. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen subjects were involved in the test. VFA was recorded by varying the viewing distance, target complexity, disparity velocity, lighting condition and background luminance. Base-up prisms were introduced to create vertical disparity in the peripheral retinal area, whereas an offset compensation was added in the central area. Data were analyzed in JMP software using T-test and repeated-measures ANOVA tests. RESULTS: VFA is significantly affected by target properties including viewing distance, target complexity and disparity velocity; the impact from lighting condition and background luminance is not significant. Although central retina plays a crucial role in the fusion process, peripheral regions also affect the fusion performance when stimulus size on retina and contents disparity values are modified between central and peripheral vision. CONCLUSION: Vertical fusion is affected by various target properties. For the first time, peripheral vertical disparity direction effects on central fusion and eye motion response have been explored. Besides, a quantitative interaction of central and peripheral fusion is observed, which could be applied in clinical measurement on binocular disease concerning central and peripheral vision conflict.

A photonic circuit design for implementing frequency 8-tupling and 24-tupling is proposed. The front- and back-end of the circuit comprises 4×4 MMI couplers enclosing an array of four pairs of phase modulators and 2×2 MMI couplers. The proposed design for frequency multiplication requires no optical or electrical filters, the operation is not limited to carefully adjusted modulation indexes, and the drift originated from static DC bias is mitigated by making use of the intrinsic phase relations of multi-mode interference couplers. A transfer matrix approach is used to represent the main building blocks of the design and hence to describe the operation of the frequency 8-tupling and 24-tupling. The concept is theoretically developed and demonstrated by simulations. Ideal and imperfect power imbalances in the multi-mode interference couplers, as well as ideal and imperfect phases of the electric drives to the phase modulators, are analyzed.

Annular linear diffractive axicons are optical devices providing chromatic imaging over an extended depth of focus when illuminated by a white light. To improve their low radiometric performance, multiple annular linear diffractive axicons (MALDAs) have been introduced. Their chromatic properties are well known and constrained by dispersion laws. A first attempt to freely combine colors or wavelength bands has been obtained with interleaved MALDAs (I_MALDAs). However, such optics do not provide a full decoupling between wavelength combination and brightness control required in the CIE color space to address any colors. We present here a new category of I_MALDA providing this capability when illuminated by a white source containing tristimulus (red/green/blue) values. We assess both theoretically and experimentally imaging qualities of such optics with respect to two different interleaving techniques and suggest some potential applications, in particular in the field of anticounterfeit and authentication techniques.

By using soluble fullerene derivative [60]PCBM, we improved photorefractive efficiency in polymer-liquid crystal composites in comparison to previous works on similar materials. We show the effect of polymer network results in resolution and bandwidth improvements compared to pure liquid crystals. This is explained by the introduction of a charge trapping mechanism, providing a memory effect for the composite. Based on this effect, we propose an approach for designing composites with higher grating efficiency and resolution.

We propose to induce a two-dimensional (2D) periodic modulation structure into a planar Grandjean cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) to demonstrate the intrinsic 2D photonic crystal properties of such materials. The structure combines a thin transmission grating and a Bragg reflective grating. One advantage of using CLC is the intrinsic high quality Bragg structure, which can be modulated by an electric field: shifting the wavelength band edge by changing the applied field. Another interesting property is the polarization dependence. The main difference between using CLC Bragg instead of a linear grating is the need to operate with a circularly polarized light, because the CLC modes are circular in such a regime. We present preliminary results obtained with what we believe to be the first switchable photonic CLC (PCLC) sample, made up of a polymer CLC gel.

We report the design and fabrication of a chirped switchable reflective grating (CSRG) recorded in a holographic polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal material. This CSRG is a spatial wavelength-selective flattener in a free-space dynamic gain equalizer for use in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Prelimenary experimental results show that this device permits the management of the spectral power of a WDM stream with an attenuation range of 6 dB. The polarization-dependent loss introduced by the CSRG is shown to be less than 0.1 dB.
