RESUMEN

Breast augmentation is a prevalent cosmetic surgery procedure among women in Western societies, and the cosmetic surgery market has witnessed substantial growth. Today, websites and online forums are platforms that feature discussions about cosmetic procedures. A genre on surgery clinic websites is 'patient stories', but also lay-initiated internet forums facilitate discussions and shared experiences related to cosmetic surgery. This study aims to analyse lay-initiated online narratives about cosmetic breast augmentation. The shared narratives contain descriptions of how women who are about to undergo breast augmentation prepare for surgery, the medical procedures that take place on the day of surgery itself, and the experiences and feelings after waking up after anaesthesia. Employing a structural analysis of 30 of these stories, this research illuminates how the surgery stories adhere to a conventional storytelling format, and how key characters within the stories are 'helpers and makers', including relatives, nurses and surgeons. The focus in these narratives revolves around the woman herself, although her active involvement is primarily observed during the preparation phase, with a more passive role assumed during subsequent clinic routines. Despite instances of pain and discomfort in the narratives, the stories are enveloped in an aura of glamour and a spa-like atmosphere. It is discussed how this 'fairy tale' story, narrating a surgical metamorphosis, seems to align with the popularisation of the cosmetic surgery sector.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine the parameters for providing primary care in cardiovascular health, with an ethnic and gender focus through telemedicine. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic Literature Review. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using databases including PUBMED, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE VHL, and other relevant sources. We included articles published in the last 15 years on parameters of telemedicine care with a differential approach focusing on ethnicity and gender. Screening, full-text reading, and information extraction were performed in duplicate and independently, though methodological quality assessment was not conducted. RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies were included, with 46.43% originating from Australia and 50.00% employing a qualitative approach. Thirty-five point seventy-one percent provided operational recommendations, and 32.14% related to the ethnic approach. Seven operational categories were identified: holistic approach to health, flexible approach to health, accessible health services, continuous improvement in service quality, culturally appropriate and qualified workforce, self-determination and empowerment, and community participation. Additionally, five categories were identified pertaining to the ethnic approach: public policy in favor of ancestral knowledge in primary health care, training of community agents and health personnel from an intercultural perspective, complementarity between traditional and western health practices, and the recognition of telehealth's value in intercultural approaches. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to adjust operational aspects related to the implementation of indigenous public policy, and to increase the number of qualified community human resources to provide holistic, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate care. Regarding gender, there is a necessity to implement public policy based on health determinants that will dismantle barriers to accessing gender-specific services and comprehensively assess cardiovascular risk.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to describe the reported prevalence of post-COVID-19 syndrome and its characteristics by gender, profession, and other determinants among health care workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among health workers with a history of COVID-19 in Latin America, and the 2030 responses from Argentina were selected for this analysis. Sociodemographic information, as well as data on initial course of COVID-19, and the persistence of 21 symptoms beyond the first month, their severity, clinical evolution, and health care demands were collected. RESULTS: The reported prevalence of post-COVID-19 syndrome was higher in women for each of the symptom clusters studied. Severity of the initial symptoms, female gender, nursing profession, multi-employment, and working in emergency areas were all independent variables. DISCUSSION: The greater strain of health care workers during the pandemic -highly feminized- and the associated gender conditions may partially explain these findings.

Abstract This study analyzed the construction process of the chosen name and related aspects among transgender individuals from a medium-sized municipality in southern Brazil. Qualitative data from a descriptive and exploratory mixed-method study was used. Self-declared trans people aged 18 or over were included. Three focus groups were conducted with ten participants. These individuals, aged between 19 and 52 years, have a documented chosen name, but half have not yet changed their civil records. The content analysis technique produced two categories: "construction of the chosen name as an instrument for validating the transgender identity" and "impacts of the construction of the chosen name on self-acceptance and on family and social relationships." The results reinforce the importance of respecting the name as a way of contributing to the gender affirmation of transgender individuals. The name was linked to the experiences, individuality and values of these individuals. Its proper use, much more than respect for legislation, meant respect for the different possibilities of human existence. It is expected that the results presented can be used as a tool for recognizing the issues and nuances that permeate the construction of the chosen name and contribute to identity validation.

Abstract This essay aims to present the concept of dissonant bodies and give visibility to these bodies in the field of public health from anti-colonial and queer perspectives. These bodies are often considered dissidents. Their existence is considered abject, disposable, and marginalized by neoliberal and necropolitical society. It is presented as another possibility in the face of the logic and political strategies of hegemonic reproduction of capital-life and health policies. It debates tensions of new possibilities and alternatives of other modes of existence and inclusive worlds, in which all lives are considered, in their singularities and differences, radically equal in the validation of their ways of living.

RESUMEN

Self-tracking in general, and by women in particular is increasingly researched. In the literature, however, women's interactions with selftracking technologies in menopause-a change that (almost) every woman will go through-is largely taken for granted. This paper addresses this lacuna by asking whether and how menopausal women use self-tracking technologies, and how this (non-) usage mediates their self-experiences. In doing so, it elaborates on another understudied phenomenon: the constitutive significance of "un-tracking"-that is, of various shades and levels of not using self-tracking technologies-in menopause. Most of the 13 interviewed women in this study reported that they stopped, drastically reduced, or resisted self-tracking in menopause. By framing the discussion of these accounts of "un-tracking" within the tradition of post-phenomenology and a phenomenology of situated bodily self-awareness, we show that these women experience their bodies as (1) wise and eu-appearing, (2) unmoldable and dysappearing, and (3) longing for disappearance. Herein, their experientially mediating un-tracking practices are temporally and socio-culturally contextualized in complex ways and bear substantial existential significance. This study establishes the potential harmful ways in which self-tracking mediates self-experiences, as well as the fruitful ways in which un-tracking may do so. Against the background of this observation, this paper makes an appeal to take a step back from uncritically celebrating self-tracking in healthcare contexts, and critically evaluates whether (the promotion of) using (more) self-tracking technologies in these contexts is desirable to begin with.

Sexis an important factor to be considered tocomprehendoldage care dependencyObjective:Verify associated factors to dependency, in and out of home, in persons with 75 years or more, with emphasis on sexdifferences. Methodology:Cross-sectional research with data from the FIBRA Study. The functional dependence in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) was divided in activities performed inside home (using telephone, managing medicine, housework and meal preparation) and activities performed outside home (shopping, transportation and managing finances). The independent variable included health and sociodemographic aspects. Estimates on prevalence ratios were made using multiple Poisson regression models to verify the many variables associated with dependency inside and outside home. Results:The sample was composed of 804 older people. Inside home there were not any factors associated with dependency in the males. However, in the females the associated factors were frailty (PR = 1.99; 95%CI: 1.26-3.15) and 80 and older (PR = 1.41; 95%CI: 1.05-1.89). As to dependency outside home, frailty was a factor that stood out in both sexes, male (PR = 2.80 95%CI: 1.17-6.64) and female (PR = 1.98 95%CI: 1.24-3.17). Conclusions:To women, older age and frailty were the strongest factors of dependency, to both inside and outside home. To men, frailty was the strongest and single dependency factor for dependency in outside activities, showing a higher prevalence than that of the female sex (AU).

Abstract This article analyzes the communication of the cover image of the National Policy for Comprehensive Health of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites, and Transgender. This is a qualitative-descriptive study with image analysis conducted in the light of Judith Butler's concepts. The textual corpus included 13 texts, six pictures, and the background. The main colors used were black and blue. The human figures that perform the male gender are superimposed upon those of the female gender. The texts only situate the content of the document as public policy. The principle of knowledge disseminated was gender identity, and this term was identified more frequently. The cover of the document reinforces stereotypes by representing traditional gender performances in a fixed way and disregarding the political use of the colors of the movement it purports to represent.

Abstract This study aimed at describing community health agents' representational structure on domestic violence against women. A quantitative-qualitative research study based on the Theory of Social Representations in its structural approach and carried out in a municipality from inland Bahia, Brazil. The community health agents participated through free evocation and centrality techniques: choix-par-bloc, constitution of word pairs and mise-en-cause, from May to August 2019. Data analysis was carried out by means of the EVOC software (Ensemble of Programs Permettant I'analyse des Evocations), similarity analysis and mise-en-cause analysis. These professionals' representational structure is organized from the central elements of disrespect and sadness, which attribute negative meanings to the representation regarding their positions and repercussions; the other elements integrate specific information to the structure of the representations, justifying them. It is concluded that the understanding regarding organization of the community agents' social thinking about the phenomenon allows its problematization, as well as the elaboration of prevention and coping strategies for women in situations of violence, the aggressors and the community.

Abstract Suicide among women is a matter of public health, and there is a lack of scientific literature on this issue. In this theoretical essay, we sought to discuss suicide among women in Brazil from a gender perspective. For that purpose, we adopted the idea that gender extrapolates the concept of sex, considering that differences between people are produced by culture and arrangements through which society transforms biological sexuality into the realizations of human life. Therefore, this article is organized in a way to indicate some explanatory models of suicide among women, discussing gender inequalities and approaching the matter of intersectionality from a protective view. Moreover, we believe that the theme is extremely complex, considering that stigma still resists, as does prejudice related to this issue. Hence, it is of utmost importance to view the structural questions that refer to suicide in women, such as violence and gender inequalities.

(AU)

In this manuscript, we present a research whose objective was to understand how the practicesof care to the pregnant women users of crack have been being produced in the services of health in a town of Rio Grande do Sul. This study of qualitative approach it was developed jointly to two public services, the Program of Reduction of Harms (PRH) andPsychosocial Care Centers Alcohol and other Drugs (CAPSad), with five voluntary women for the research. The life histories were rebuilt starting from their narratives and also of health's professionals that provided some care to the participants. After exposing the stories, we reflected on three important clues to think about care practices for pregnant women who use crack: mental health, drug use and intersectionality; human rights, reproductive hierarchies and conceptions of motherhood; and health care practices. We observed that the professionals' conceptions about maternity guide health care practices, characterized as care in the spectrum of maternal and child health, and not care directed at women's health.Knowing the care demands of these women is essential for us to think about health practices guided by the expanded clinic.

Objective: Through this study, we sought to point out the nurses' actions to promote the father's participation in prenatal care. Methods: This is a descriptive, qualitative study carried out with ten (10) nurses from Basic Health Units in the interior of Ceará through semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results: The professionals involved in the research reported understanding the importance of the father's participation in prenatal care; however, most interviewees demonstrated that they did not have adequate prior knowledge on the subject and did not report effective measures to attract these men to the consultation. Conclusion: It was noticed that the biggest challenges to the effective participation of parents in prenatal care are found in social and cultural barriers, the lack of theoretical preparation of nurses to work with the theme, and the almost absence of government policies and incentives to work with the male audience.

The objective was to identify in the literature the educational actions used to promote men's health in primary health care. It is an integrative literature review. Searches were performed in the LILACS, PUBMED, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, SCIELO, BDENF and IBECS databases. Twenty-two articles were identified, and five articles were selected that fit the inclusion criteria, and followed for content analysis. It was observed that there is little production of studies on the subject and that the education actions carried out with the male population are mostly focused on the sexual and urological aspects, and do not contemplate the integrality of men's health. It is considered that there is still a need to look at men's health comprehensively, approaching different themes, especially considering the health indicators of this population pointed out in the National Men's Health Policy itself.

RESUMEN

In some countries, including the United Kingdom, young mothers' pregnant and postnatal bodies remain an area of concern for policy and practice, with interventions developed to support improved health behaviours including diet and physical activity. This article explores what young women themselves think and feel about eating and moving during and after pregnancy. Semi-structured interviews with 11 young mothers were conducted within two voluntary organisations. Data were analysed using thematic analysis with the theoretical lens of embodiment, which provided an understanding of how young women's eating and moving habits related to how they felt about their bodies in the world. Four themes situated in different experiences of being and having a body were identified: pregnant body, emotional body, social body and surveilled body. Stress and low mood impacted eating habits as young women responded to complex circumstances and perceived judgement about their lives. Food choices were influenced by financial constraints and shaped by the spaces and places in which young women lived. Whilst young women were busy moving in their day-to-day lives, they rarely had the resources to take part in other physical activity. Holistic approaches that focus on how women feel about their lives and bodies and ask them where they need support are required from professionals. Interventions that address the structural influences on poor diet and inequalities in physical activity participation are necessary to underpin this. Approaches that over-focus on the achievement of individual health behaviours may fail to improve long-term health and risk reinforcing young women's disadvantage.

RESUMEN

Physical activity can be a conduit for improving men's social connectedness as well as physical gains for well-being. However, marginalised men, and fathers in particular, can be challenged to engage in leisure time physical activity. This qualitative study reports how fathers, who experience complex and significant social and health inequities, conceptualise and experience barriers to physical activity. Drawing from focus groups with 17 fathers, and semi-structured interviews with seven service providers about their perspectives on men's physical activity in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES), a highly marginalised neighbourhood. A masculinities framework was used to describe and contextualise physical activity in fathers' lives. Three themes were inductively derived through the analyses: (1) 'they're busy surviving' a finding referencing the work and limits invoked by poverty wherein survival was triaged ahead of leisure time physical activity; (2) 'there is no activity centre' chronicling the lack of physical activity spaces, programmes and resources available to fathers; and (3) 'lifestyle affects our capability to exercise' a theme detailing how social isolation amplified by factors including housing and opioid crises, and being a father in a resource poor setting imposed significant barriers to physical activity. The findings support reconceptualising physical activity programmes with men who are living in marginalising conditions to address behavioural and structural health inequities in tailoring father-centred programmes and resources.

RESUMEN

Fatal Fetal Anomaly (FFA) has generated international media attention as termination of pregnancy (TOP) for FFA was legislated for, for the first time in Ireland. Media offers an insight into what health-related information is available to the public and how it is presented to them. The aim of this study was to examine how information related to FFA, TOP for FFA and perinatal palliative care (PPC) were framed in Irish published media. A critical discourse analysis, which examines the relations between discourse and social and cultural phenomena was implemented. Habermasian's framework facilitated an objective analysis of the text, to facilitate interpretation and understanding of socially produced meanings. A broadsheet and journal were chosen. Dated from 2012 to 2017, 129 articles were identified. Themes of personification of the unborn, human rights and power and politics were embedded in the discourse, creating political influence to sway perceptions and views. Terminology were chosen by different ideological perspectives to create varying contexts and support arguments. PPC was suppressed within the published media. This study highlights misrepresentations in the information delivered to the public and suggests the need for healthcare professionals to expand their media literacy and develop these skills with their patients.

RESUMEN

In this article, we analyze the emotion work of women suffering from pemphigus, a rare skin disease. We suggest that this approach sheds new light on the upheavals caused by illness and more generally on the experience of illness itself. Our study draws on a series of 27 interviews with pemphigus patients whose average age was 57. We show that serious and chronic illness does not radically alter the feeling rules in place with close friends and family, despite the uncertainty and emotional upheaval confronting patients. The emotion work they carry out should be understood in light of roles and places established prior to the onset of the disease. Emotion work is embedded in the broader history of relationships with family and friends and prior episodes of illness help create particular configurations and expectations.

RESUMEN

Prior research suggests that caring is in tension with a financially incentivized, technologically-driven healthcare system. Nevertheless, employers, the public, and nurses expect nurses to be caring when providing care to patients and families. This article focuses on nurses' emotional labor strategies when managing emotions related to organizationally imposed interference with caring. We analyzed 27 semi-structured interviews with nurses and found that the unsuccessful performance of emotional labor spills over into the women's relationships at and outside of work. We apply Di-Cicco-Bloom and DiCicco-Bloom's concept of secondary emotional labor to examine our findings and how secondary emotional labor further develops the alienation and exploitation concepts of Hochschild's emotional labor theory. We suggest a structural change in nurses' job design that remedies contradictory caring expectations and supports their emotional labor to prioritize a climate of caring for patients.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The medical field has witnessed a growing expansion of the female workforce. Despite a greater appreciation and trust in women in pediatric spaces, gender violence remains a significant concern on the health agenda. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate how pediatricians perceive gender experiences in daily work, discussing its effects on professional practice. Methods: The study adopted a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative approach and was conducted in a university hospital with 14 pediatricians from the urgency and emergency service. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore sociodemographic data, training, and professional background. The narratives obtained were subjected to Content Analysis, resulting in the construction of five categories: choice by specialty; maternity; place of reception; violence; and the male doctor. Results: It was observed that pediatricians build their professional routine based on conservative values of patriarchal and sexist anchorage. Conclusions: The set of narratives emphasize the importance of confronting gender inequality within the scope of medical training.
