Background: Prior studies suggest that lower levels of mindfulness contribute to the motivation of using alcohol to cope with distress. Research examining this possibility is scarce or limited to alcohol, but not marijuana, related outcomes. Objectives: We examined separate models (for alcohol and for marijuana) to determine the associations between trait mindfulness (describing, acting with awareness, non-judging, non-reactivity) and alcohol and marijuana outcomes (use indicators and negative consequences) via emotional psychopathology (i.e., a latent variable assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety) and alcohol/marijuana coping motives. Results: The final analytic sample consisted of 456 participants (Mean age = 22.96 ± 3.12 years; 66.2% women) for the alcohol model; and 232 participants (Mean age = 22.96 ± 3.01 years; 66.2% women) for the marijuana model. Two path models were conducted, such that indirect paths were examined for each trait mindfulness facet on alcohol/marijuana outcomes (e.g., describing → emotional psychopathology → alcohol coping motives → binge drinking frequency). Within the comprehensive alcohol model, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging and non-reactivity were associated with less binge drinking frequency and lower number of alcohol-related negative consequences via lower severity of emotional psychopathology symptoms and lower endorsement of drinking to cope motives. For the marijuana model, describing, acting with awareness, and non-judging of inner experience were associated with less marijuana quantity (grams) consumed and lower number of marijuana-related negative consequences via lower severity of emotional psychopathology symptoms and lower endorsement of marijuana coping motives. Conclusions: Prevention and intervention programs of alcohol and marijuana in Argentina may benefit from improving mindfulness skills and targeting emotional psychopathology and motives to use drugs, to prevent or reduce negative drug-related consequences.

Background: Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) aims to modify misperceptions about peer consumption that influence one's drinking. PNF is usually a component in Brief Interventions delivered to university students. Despite this, whether PNF contributes to improving the effect of brief interventions is unclear. Objectives: This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the role of PNF as an active ingredient in a face-to-face motivational brief intervention. Results: Participants were students from an Argentinian university (n=806; M=20.14; SD=3.17; 63.2% women) who presented at least one binge drinking episode in the last 12 months. Students were randomly assigned to 1) a Brief Intervention, 2) a Brief Intervention with PNF, or 3) an evaluation-only control group. The follow-up was three months later. After controlling sex and age, General Linear Models showed that both the brief intervention and the brief intervention with PNF reduced the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and alcohol problems compared to the control condition. No differences were found between the brief intervention and the brief intervention with PNF. Also, treating eight students with brief intervention and 10 with brief intervention with PNF was necessary to benefit one student. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrates that brief intervention reduces alcohol consumption among Latin American university students and that PNF might not be an active ingredient of its effectiveness in this population. However, PNF could benefit students with specific characteristics, like those who overestimate their peers' drinking, highlighting the need to study moderators of effectiveness further.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effects of booster and no booster versions of web-based alcohol Personalised Normative Feedback (PNF) and whether descriptive norms mediated and/or participant motivation moderated the effectiveness of the intervention in real world conditions (i.e. no financial incentives). METHODS: Pragmatic randomised controlled trial with 1-, 3-, and 6-month assessments. Brazilian college students reporting alcohol use in the last 12 months (N=931) were recruited from May/2020 to December/2022 and allocated to 1) No booster/single PNF(S-PNF); 2) Booster/multiple PNF(M-PNF); or 3) Assessment-only control. We applied Helmert coding [1: Any intervention (S-PNF or M-PNF) vs. Control; and 2: S-PNF vs. M-PNF]. PRIMARY OUTCOMES: typical number of drinks/week and maximum number of drinks/week; secondary outcomes: drinking frequency and number of consequences. Three-months assessment was the primary interval. Descriptive norms were tested as mediator. Interest, importance, and readiness to change were examined as moderators. RESULTS: Compared to control, any intervention did not influence primary outcomes at 3-months or 6-months, but did at 1-month, when reduced typical drinking (IRR:0.77, 95%CI:0.66;0.90) and maximum number of drinks (IRR:0.69, 95%CI:0.58;0.82). There was an intervention effect on the consequences at 3-months. No differences were observed between S-PNF and M-PNF. No mediation effects were found at 3-months. At 6-months, there was an indirect effect on typical drinking through norms at 3-months (b=-0.82, 95%CI:-2.03;-0.12) and effects on maximum drinks through norms at 1-month (b=-0.54, 95%CI:-1.65;-0.02). No support for moderation was found. CONCLUSIONS: Intervention reduced alcohol drinking at 1 month only and was not effective thereafter. Mechanisms of effect remain unclear.

BACKGROUND: Ayahuasca is a South American plant hallucinogen rich in the psychedelic N,N-dimethyltryptamine and ß-carbolines (mainly harmine). Preclinical and observational studies suggest that ayahuasca exerts beneficial effects in substance use disorders, but these potentials were never assessed in a clinical trial. METHODS: Single-center, single-blind, feasibility, proof-of-concept study, assessing the effects of one dose of ayahuasca accompanied by psychological support (without psychotherapy) on the drinking patterns (primary variable) of 11 college students with harmful alcohol consumption. Secondary variables included safety and tolerability, craving, personality, anxiety, impulsivity, self-esteem, and social cognition. FINDINGS: Ayahuasca was well tolerated (no serious adverse reactions were observed), while producing significant psychoactive effects. Significant reductions in days per week of alcohol consumption were found between weeks 2 and 3 (2.90 ± 0.28 vs 2.09 ± 0.41; P < 0.05, uncorrected), which were not statistically significant after Bonferroni correction. There were no statistically significant effects for other variables, except for a significant reduction in reaction time in an empathy task. CONCLUSIONS: A significant reduction in days of alcohol consumption was observed 2-3 weeks after ayahuasca intake, but this effect did not survive after Bonferroni correction. The lack of significant effects in alcohol use and other variables may be related to the small sample size and mild/moderate alcohol use at baseline. The present study shows the feasibility of our protocol, paving the way for future larger, controlled studies.

BACKGROUND: To develop prevention programs or early interventions to reduce alcohol consumption and related problems among college students, it is essential to understand their motivations for drinking and the spontaneous (effective and non-effective) strategies they employ to control, considering the social and cultural contexts influence. This study aimed to explore these factors and the student's application of selfcare in different situations and environments, as well as to identify their reasons for not drinking. METHODS: The students were invited to participate using a snowball sampling, up to the theoretical saturation point. Qualitative individual semi-structured interviews were carried out and the interviews contents were analyzed using the NVivo software. The participants were 23 college students between 18 and 24 years old, with diverse patterns of alcohol use (low-risk to suggestive of dependence). RESULTS: Data analysis highlighted three main themes: (a) Contexts (such as bars, "open bar" parties and others) and consumption patterns; (b) Protective Strategies (such as stop-drinking intervals, eating before or during drinking, returning home in the company of a friend); (c) Motivations to control drinking (such as sense of responsibility, bad previous experiences, family and religious issues). Protective strategies and motivation to control drinking were perceived to be less prominent in specific contexts that favor high alcohol consumption, as open bar parties. CONCLUSIONS: Motivations and protective strategies varied according to the drinkers' profile, social situations and settings in which they consumed alcohol. The results highlight the need for preventive interventions planned for specific drinking patterns and contexts.

Background: It is important to identify students who would benefit from early interventions to reduce harmful drinking patterns and associated consequences. the Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire (B-YAACQ) could be particularly useful as a screening tool in university settings. Objectives. The present study examined the utility of the B-YAACQ to distinguish among students at-risk for problematic alcohol use as measured by the AUDIT. Objectives: The present study examined the utility of the B-YAACQ to distinguish among students at-risk for problematic alcohol use as measured by the AUDIT. Methods: A sample of 6382 students (mean age=20.28, SD=3.75, 72.2% females) from seven countries (i.e., U.S., Canada, South-Africa, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, England) completed the B-YAACQ, the AUDIT and different measures of alcohol use. Results: ROC analyses suggested that a cutoff score of 5 maximized the YAACQ's discrimination utility to differentiate between students at low versus moderate/high risk in the total sample and across countries (except in Canada, where the cutoff was 4). In addition, a cutoff of 7 differentiated between students at low/moderate versus high risk in the total sample, while cutoffs of 10, 9, 8 and 7 differentiate between students at low/moderate versus high risk in Uruguay, U.S and Spain (10), Argentina (9), England (8), and Canada and South-Africa (7), respectively. Students classified at the three risk levels (i.e., low, moderate and high) differed in age (i.e., a younger age was associated with higher risk) and drinking patters (i.e., higher drinking frequency, quantity, binge drinking and AUDIT and B-YAACQ scores in the higher risk groups). Conclusions: This study suggest that the B-YAACQ is a useful tool to identify college students at-risk for experiencing problematic patterns of alcohol use.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns are known to affect alcohol consumption. This study examines drinking expectancies and contexts upon alcohol consumption of Argentinean students.Objectives: To assess within-person changes in alcohol consumption in Argentinean college students (aged 18-24), from August 2019 with a one-year follow-up during the COVID-19 lockdown, considering alcohol expectancies, drinking contexts, and main socio-demographic variables. To validate the stability of these predictors, we discuss the effects on the alcohol consumption across dependent and independent measures.Methods: We assessed one longitudinal (N = 300, 70% female) and one cross-sectional (N = 165, 78% female) sample via online surveys and applied multilevel analysis and regressions, respectively.Results: Alcohol consumption significantly increased during lockdown compared to one-year before (mean: 6.91 and 8.26 alcohol units, correspondingly). In the longitudinal sample, social facilitation (medium effect sizes [ES]: 0.21, 0.22) and parental presence (medium ES: 0.12, 0.21) significantly and stable (through time) predicted increasing effects on consumption. In the cross-sectional sample, stress control (high ES: 0.78) and parental presence (high ES: 0.42) were associated with higher consumption during lockdown.Conclusion: College students increased their alcohol consumption during lockdown, suggesting that restrictive sanitary measures may negatively affect consumption. Literature is not conclusive as both decreases and increases in alcohol consumption in students from developed countries were reported. Before and during COVID-19 lockdown, parental presence is a stable predictor of increased alcohol consumption, though unusual according to the literature. Health policies aimed at modifying the behavior of parents who promote/share alcohol consumption with their offspring may help reduce drinking in college students.

A Psicologia Escolar e Educacional vem conquistando novos espaços para a atuação e campo de pesquisa, dentre eles, destacamos a educação superior. Assim, este estudo teve por objetivo conhecer as demandas apresentadas por coordenadores de cursos de graduação, analisá-las à luz da Psicologia Escolar na vertente crítica e apontar possibilidades de atuação do psicólogo escolar junto a estes. A pesquisa, de caráter qualitativo, foi realizada a partir da análise de conteúdo das respostas obtidas dos questionários enviados por e-mail aos coordenadores dos 77 cursos de graduação oferecidos por uma instituição pública de ensino superior de Minas Gerais. Contamos com 28 questionários respondidos. As demandas apresentadas referem-se a questões acadêmicas e emocionais dos estudantes; sobrecarga de trabalho docente; relações interpessoais e formação continuada; burocracias enfrentadas pelos coordenadores; além da falta de preparação prévia e apoio para o exercício da função e concepções sobre o trabalho do psicólogo escolar. Concluímos que o coordenador, ao ouvir e compreender demandas advindas de discentes, docentes e técnicos, responde a elas por meio de uma parceria auspiciosa com o psicólogo escolar, juntamente com outros segmentos e instâncias da instituição.(AU)


The School and Educational Psychology has been conquering new spaces for professional performance and research field, among them, we highlight Higher Education. Therefore, this study aimed to get the demands presented by coordinators of undergraduate courses and analyze them in the light of School Psychology in the critical perspective and to point out possibilities for the performance of the school psychologist with them. The qualitative research was carried out based on the content analysis of the answers obtained from the questionnaires sent by e-mail to the coordinators of the 77 undergraduate courses offered by a public Higher Education institution in Minas Gerais. We have 28 answered questionnaires. The demands presented refer to students' academic and emotional issues; the overload of teaching work; interpersonal relationships and continuing education; the bureaucracies faced by coordinators; and the lack of prior preparation and support for the practice of the function and conceptions about the work of the school psychologist. We conclude that the coordinator, when listening to and understanding demands from students, teachers, and technicians, seeks to respond to them with an auspicious partnership with the school psychologist, together with other segments and instances of the institution.(AU)


La Psicología Escolar y Educacional sigue conquistando nuevos espacios para la actuación y campo de investigación, entre ellos destaca la educación superior. Por lo tanto, este estudio tuvo como objetivo conocer las demandas presentadas por los coordinadores de cursos de graduación, analizarlas desde la perspectiva crítica de la Psicología Escolar y señalar posibilidades de actuación del psicólogo escolar. La investigación cualitativa realizó el análisis de contenido de las respuestas obtenidas de los cuestionarios enviados por correo electrónico a los coordinadores de los 77 cursos ofrecidos por una institución pública de educación superior en Minas Gerais (Brasil). Se respondieron 28 cuestionarios. Las demandas presentadas se refieren a cuestiones académicas y emocionales de los estudiantes; a la sobrecarga del trabajo docente; a las relaciones interpersonales y educación continua; a las burocracias que enfrentan los coordinadores; además de la falta de preparación previa y apoyo para el ejercicio de la función y concepciones sobre el trabajo del psicólogo escolar. Se concluye que el coordinador escucha y considera las demandas de los estudiantes, profesores y técnicos, y trata de responderlas por medio de una asociación favorable con el psicólogo escolar, junto con otros segmentos e instancias de la institución.(AU)

Introducción: los cambios de conductas saludables a las no saludables ponen en riesgo la salud, los universitarios son una población muy vulnerable para adoptar estilos de vida que puedan favorecer su calidad de vida. El consumo de alcohol y tabaco como conducta es un tema importante en esta etapa de formación profesional. Objetivo: determinar las conductas de estilo de vida relacionados con la salud como el consumo de cigarrillos, alcohol y drogas, hábitos alimentarios, forma física, control del estrés y seguridad que realizan los estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Enfermería de la Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, México. Metodología: estudio de tipo cuantitativo, descriptivo, transversal en una muestra de 666 estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Enfermería seleccionados por muestreo no probabilístico. Resultados: predominó el género femenino con 83%, el 62.8% presenta un buen estilo de vida, seguido del 30.3% que tiene un excelente estilo de vida; el 79.1% corresponde a los estudiantes que no fuman y el 37.8% de los estudiantes tiene una buena alimentación. Los estudiantes calificaron su forma física como regular en el 41% de los casos, seguida de mala con el 34.5%. En cuanto a la práctica de control del estrés calificaron como buena con un 50.8% y excelente con 26.1%. Conclusión: los estudiantes de Enfermería tienen un nivel de estilo de vida bueno relacionado con la salud, los más practicados corresponden a las dimensiones de consumo de alcohol, hábitos alimentarios, control de estrés y seguridad. Es importante considerar la dimensión relacionada con la forma física (práctica de ejercicio físico), ya que se practica ocasionalmente, lo que demuestra que los estudiantes llevan un estilo de vida sedentario.


Introduction: Changes from healthy to unhealthy behaviors put health at risk, so university students are a very vulnerable population to adopt lifestyles that can favor their quality of life. The consumption of alcohol and tobacco as conduct is an important issue at this stage of professional training. Objective: To determine the lifestyle behaviors related to health such as the consumption of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs, eating habits, physical fitness, stress control and safety carried out by the students of the Bachelor of Nursing at the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, in Mexico. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study in a sample of 666 Nursing undergraduate students selected by non-probabilistic sampling. Results: The female gender predominated with 83%, 62.8% have a good lifestyle, followed by 30.3% who have an excellent lifestyle; 79.1% corresponds to students who do not smoke and 37.8% of students have a good diet. The students rated their physical fitness as fair in 41% of the cases, followed by poor with 34.5%. Regarding the practice of stress control, they qualified as good with 50.8% and excellent with 26.1%. Conclusion: Nursing students have a good level of lifestyle related to health, the most practiced correspond to the dimensions of alcohol consumption, eating habits, stress control and safety. It is important to consider the dimension related to physical fitness (practice of physical exercise), since it is only practiced occasionally, which shows that students lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Objective: to verify the prevalence and pattern of alcohol consumption among the academics of a higher educa-tion institution located in the interior of the state of Rondônia. Methods: cross-sectional and observational study with all students enrolled in the institution in 2017. Were used the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test to identify alcohol consumption and other classes of psychoactive substances. To characterize binge drinking was adopted the definition by the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism and, and exclusion criteria was defined the questionnaire was not filled in completely and the request of the participant. The data were ana-lyzed with SPSS program 17. The univariate analysis was used to describe quantitative variables and the bivariate analysis to verify the association between the use of alcoholic beverages and the independent variables (sex, age) the level of significance was set at 5%. Results: 518 subjects participated in the study, with a mean age of 23.1 years, of which 355 (68.5%) were female and 163 (31.5%) were male. Among these, 385 (74.3%) stated that they consume alcoholic beverages, 282 (54.4%) started consuming less than 18 years and 239 (57%) reported practic-ing BD. Among BD practitioners, 48.9% do so at least once a month.Conclusion: there was a high prevalence of alcohol consumption and binge drinking among university students, which predisposes these individuals to physical, emotional, and social problems. Such findings should serve as a warning for the need for public policies aimed at preventing alcohol consumption that begins during adolescence (AU)


Objetivo: verificar a prevalência e o padrão de consumo de álcool entre acadêmicos de uma instituição de ensino superior do interior do estado de Rondônia. Método: estudo transversal e observacional com todos os estudantes matriculados no ano de 2017. Foi utilizado o Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test para identificar o consumo de álcool e outras classes de substâncias psicoativas. Para a caracterização de binge drinkingadotou-se a definição do National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism e, como critérios de exclusão, definiu-se o não preenchimento completo do questionário e solicitação do participante. Os dados foram analisados com o auxílio do programa SPSS 17. Procedeu-se à análise univariada para descrição das variáveis quantitativas e análise bivariada para verificar a associação entre o uso de bebidas alcoólicas e as variáveis independentes (sexo, idade), adotan-do-se o nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: participaram do estudo 518 indivíduos, com média de idade de 23,1 anos, sendo 355 (68,5%) do sexo feminino e 163 (31,5%) masculino. Dentre esses, 385 (74,3%) afirmaram que consomem bebidas alcoólicas, 282 (54,4%) iniciaram o consumo com menos de 18 anos e 239 (57%) referiram praticar o BD. Entre os praticantes de BD, 48,9% o fazem pelo menos uma vez ao mês.Conclusão: observou-se elevada prevalência de consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e de prática de binge drinking entre os universitários, o que predispõe esses indivíduos a problemas físicos, emocionais e sociais. Tais achados devem alertar para a necessidade de políticas públicas que visem a prevenção de consumo de álcool que se inicia durante a adolescência (AU)

ABSTRACT Objective: to measure the level of psychoactive substance dependence of healthcare students from a public federal university and to verify relationships with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach carried out with 527 students from seven undergraduate courses in the health area at a federal public university in the Brazilian South region. Collection was carried out virtually by means of a questionnaire for sociodemographic and academic characterization, the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test and the Mental Health Inventory. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used for data analysis. Results: during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the students presented occasional and suggestive of abuse consumption of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, marijuana and hypnotics/sedatives. The lowest mean mental health scores corresponded to the students who had their addiction level classified as suggestive of abuse, and the highest mean scores were found in those who did not use these substances during the pandemic (no consumption/pandemic). Conclusion: given that higher mean scores point to better mental health, it can be inferred that worse mental health is associated with higher psychoactive substance consumption.


RESUMEN Objetivo: medir el nivel de dependencia de sustancias psicoactivas entre estudiantes de salud de una Universidad Pública Federal y verificar las relaciones con la salud mental durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Método: Estudio transversal con enfoque cuantitativo realizado con 527 alumnos de siete cursos de pregrado del área de salud de una Universidad Pública Federal del sur de Brasil. La recogida se realizó de forma virtual a través de un cuestionario de caracterización sociodemográfica y académica, el Test de Detección de Consumo de Alcohol, Tabaco y Sustancias, y el Inventario de Salud Mental. Para el análisis de los datos se utilizaron estadísticas descriptivas e inferenciales. Resultados: la mayoría de los estudiantes durante la pandemia de COVID-19 tenían un consumo ocasional y sugestivo de productos de tabaco, bebidas alcohólicas, marihuana e hipnóticos/sedantes. Las puntuaciones medias de salud mental más bajas fueron las de los estudiantes cuyo nivel de dependencia se clasificó como sugestivo de abuso, y las puntuaciones más altas las de aquellos que no consumieron durante la pandemia (sin consumo/pandemia). Conclusión: teniendo en cuenta que las medias más altas apuntan a una mejor salud mental, se puede deducir que una peor salud mental está asociada a un mayor consumo de sustancias psicoactivas.


RESUMO Objetivo: mensurar o nível de dependência de substâncias psicoativas dos estudantes da área da saúde de uma universidade pública federal e verificar relações com a saúde mental durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Método: estudo transversal com abordagem quantitativa realizado com 527 estudantes de sete cursos de graduação da área da saúde de uma universidade pública federal da região Sul do Brasil. A coleta foi realizada de forma virtual por meio de um questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica e acadêmica, o Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test e o Mental Health Inventory. Para análise dos dados, foi utilizada a estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: a maioria dos estudantes, durante a pandemia da COVID-19, apresentou uso ocasional e sugestivo de abuso para derivados do tabaco, bebidas alcoólicas, maconha e hipnóticos/sedativos. As menores médias de saúde mental foram dos estudantes que tiveram seu nível de dependência classificado como sugestivo de abuso, e as maiores médias foram dos que não fizeram uso dessas substâncias durante a pandemia (sem uso/pandemia). Conclusão: tendo em vista que médias mais elevadas apontam para uma melhor saúde mental, pode-se inferir que uma pior saúde mental está associada ao maior uso de substâncias psicoativas.

Drinking in private or other unlicensed settings before going out (i.e., pre-drinking) is increasingly being identified as a common behaviour amongst students as it provides an opportunity to extend their drinking duration and socialise. However, studies suggest associations between pre-drinking and alcohol-related harms. This study examines Brazilian and British university students' pre-drinking patterns and associations with nightlife-related harms amongst drinkers. A total of 1,151 Brazilian and 424 British students (aged 18+ years) completed an online survey. The questionnaire covered sociodemographic variables, nightlife drinking behaviour including pre-drinking and past 12 months experience of alcohol-related harms. Most participants were female (BRA 59.1%, ENG 65.3%; p = 0.027), undergraduate students (BRA 88.2%, ENG 71.2%; p<0.001) and aged 18-25 years (BRA 78.8%, ENG 81.5%; p<0.001). Pre-drinking was more prevalent in England (82.8%) than Brazil (44.0%; p<0.001), yet Brazilian students drank more units of alcohol than British students when pre-drinking (BRA 17.6, ENG 12.1; p<0.001). In multi-variate analyses, pre-drinking was significantly associated with increased odds of experiencing a range of harms across both countries (e.g., blackouts; failing to attend university), with the strength of associations varying between countries. Pre-drinking in Brazil and in England is an important event before going out amongst university students, however our study shows it is associated with a range of harms in both countries. Thus, preventing pre-drinking may be a crucial strategy to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and related harms in the nightlife context across countries with diverse nightlife environments and alcohol drinking cultures.

Introdução: objetivamos avaliar associação entre ingestão de bebida alcoólica e estado antropométrico em estudantes que frequentam Restaurante Universitário. Metodologia: estudo transversal com 155 universitários em que foi avaliado o consumo de bebida alcoólica, frequência do consumo, tempo de consumo, quantidade e hábitos adotados enquanto bebiam. As medidas antropométricas realizadas foram estatura, peso, circunferência da cintura, circunferência do quadril e quatro dobras cutâneas (tricipital, bicipital, subescapular e suprailíaca). Para análise, realizamos estatística descritiva, o teste de qui-quadrado de independência para as proporções entre os grupos e a diferença entre as médias das medidas antropométricas de acordo a quantidade de bebida alcoólica consumida foi avaliada pelo teste ANOVA. Foram considerados significantes valores de p<0,05. Resultados: dos universitários, 63,87% eram bebedores, 23,2% dos bebedores estavam com excesso de peso, 21,2% apresentaram circunferência da cintura com risco elevado e percentual de gordura em excesso em ambos os grupos (77,8% vs. 73,2). Identificamos diferença estatisticamente para a circunferência da cintura entre o tempo de consumo (p=0,003) e entre o percentual de gordura corporal de acordo com a quantidade de bebida alcoólica consumida (p=0,001). Conclusão: o estado antropométrico dos universitários que consumiam bebida alcoólica apresentou alta frequência de excesso de peso e risco de complicações metabólicas associadas à obesidade, mesmo que sem significações estatísticas para as associações testadas.


Introduction: we aimed to evaluate the association between alcohol intake and anthropometric status in students who attend the University Restaurant. Methodology: cross-sectional study with 155 university students in which the consumption of alcoholic beverages, frequency of consumption, consumption time, quantity and habits adopted while drinking were evaluated. The anthropometric measurements taken were height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and four skinfolds (triceps, biceps, subscapular and suprailiac). For analysis, we performed descriptive statistics, the chi-square test of independence for proportions between groups and the difference between the means of anthropometric measures according to the amount of alcoholic beverage consumed was evaluated by the ANOVA test. Significant values of p<0.05 were considered. Results: of the college students, 63.87% were drinkers, 23.2% of the drinkers were overweight, 21.2% high risk waist dissipation and fat percentage in both groups (77.8% vs. 73 ,two). We identified a statistically significant difference for waist circumference between consumption time (p = 0.003) and between body fat percentage according to the amount of alcoholic beverage consumed (p = 0.001). Conclusion: the anthropometric status of college students who drank alcoholic beverages presented a high frequency of weight and risk of metabolic complications associated with obesity, even if without statistical significance for the tested associations.

INTRODUCTION: Previous work suggests that college students who perceive themselves as less able to tolerate negative affect are more motivated to use alcohol to alleviate psychological distress. Recent findings also indicate that distress tolerance influences alcohol outcomes via a positive reinforcement pathway. However, results concerning the association between distress tolerance and alcohol outcomes remain inconsistent. Aim: The present study examined the association between distinctive features of distress tolerance and alcohol outcomes via internal drinking motives (i.e., coping and enhancement) in Argentinean college students. Method: From April to November 2019, a sample of 387 college students with last-month alcohol use (Mean age = 21.09 ± 4.98) completed an online survey assessing alcohol outcomes (past-month frequency of binge drinking and negative alcohol-related consequences), internal drinking motives, and four components of distress tolerance (i.e., tolerance, appraisal, absorption, and regulation). Results: The associations between specific facets of distress tolerance and drinking outcomes were atemporally mediated by coping and enhancement motives. Coping motives significantly mediated the effect of absorption and appraisal on alcohol-related problems (i.e., lower absorption and lower appraisal were associated with more problems via higher coping motives). Enhancement motives significantly mediated the effect of absorption (lower absorption was associated with greater enhancement motives) on binge drinking frequency and alcohol-related problems. Conclusions: Distress tolerance was associated with alcohol outcomes via coping and enhancement motives in this sample of Argentinean undergraduates. The ability to withstand negative affect could be a focal point of interventions to prevent the development of maladaptive patterns of drinking.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar, entre os docentes de uma universidade pública paulista, fatores associados ao nível de estresse no trabalho e padrão de uso do álcool. Trata-se de estudo epidemiológico, transversal e de caráter correlacional-descritivo, desenvolvido em um campus universitário de uma universidade pública localizada no interior paulista. O total de 253 docentes participou do estudo. Foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos para a coleta online de dados: questionário sobre dados sociodemográficos, econômicos, histórico de saúde, trabalho docente e uso de psicofármacos; a Escala de Estresse no Trabalho (EET) para avaliar o nível de estresse; o Teste para Identificação de Problemas Relacionados ao Álcool (AUDIT) e o Self-Reporting Questionnaire - (SRQ-20) para estimar a prevalência de TMC. Para análise dos dados referentes às variáveis desfecho estresse no trabalho e uso de álcool, foram realizadas análises univariadas e modelos de regressão logística multivariada, sendo consideradas significativas as associações com valor de p <0,05. Os resultados mostraram que 9,1% dos participantes do estudo apresentaram estresse no trabalho de nível alto e, em relação ao padrão de uso do álcool, 9,9% foram classificados na zona II (consumo de risco) e 1,2% zona IV (provável dependência). Na análise univariada, houve associação entre estresse no trabalho de nível alto e sexo, idade, cor da pele, orientação sexual, situação conjugal e carga horária de aula/semana. No modelo de regressão logística para predição de estresse no trabalho, foram identificados como fatores de risco: ser do sexo feminino, idade inferior a 40 anos, orientação homossexual, carga horária de aulas semanais acima de 10 horas, e ser positivo para TMC. Em relação ao uso do álcool, na análise univariada, identificou-se associação entre uso de risco e provável dependência e as variáveis sexo, idade, problemas clínicos de saúde, quantidade de problemas clínicos de saúde, uso de cigarro, problemas de saúde agrupados por sistemas, uso de medicamentos para o trato alimentar e metabolismo, uso de psicofármacos hipnóticos e área de conhecimento do curso em que o docente ministra aula (ciências da saúde e ciências sociais aplicadas). No modelo de regressão logística para predição do uso de risco ou provável dependência do álcool, foram fatores de risco: ser do sexo masculino, idade inferior a 40 anos, uso de tabaco, apresentar problemas de saúde, ministrar aula na área das ciências sociais aplicadas e utilizar medicamentos hipnóticos. Os achados deste estudo apontam para a necessidade de viabilizar intervenções com base nos fatores de risco identificados na presente pesquisa, visando ao êxito nas estratégias de prevenção e redução de estresse no trabalho e uso de álcool entre docentes universitários


The objective of this study was to identify, among the professors of a public university in São Paulo, factors associated with the level of stress at work and pattern of alcohol use. This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional, correlational-descriptive study, developed in a university campus of a public university located in the interior of São Paulo. A total of 253 faculty members participated in the study. The following instruments were used for online data collection: a questionnaire about sociodemographic and economic data, health history, teaching work, and use of psychotropic drugs; the Scale of Stress at Work (TSS) to assess stress level; the Test for Identification of Alcohol-Related Problems (AUDIT) and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire - (SRQ-20) to estimate the prevalence of CMT. Univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression models were performed to analyze the data related to the outcome variables work stress and alcohol use. The results showed that 9.1% of the study participants had high levels of work stress, and, regarding the pattern of alcohol use, 9.9% were classified as zone II (risky drinking) and 1.2% as zone IV (probable dependence). In the univariate analysis there was an association between high levels of job stress and gender, age, skin color, sexual orientation, marital status and class hours/week. In the logistic regression model for predicting job stress, the risk factors identified were being female, younger than 40 years old, homosexual orientation, more than 10 hours of classes per week, and being positive for CMT. Regarding alcohol use, the univariate analysis identified an association between risk use and probable dependence and the variables gender, age, clinical health problems, number of clinical health problems, cigarette use, health problems grouped by systems, use of medications for the alimentary tract and metabolism, use of hypnotic psychotropic drugs, and area of knowledge of the course the professor teaches (health sciences and applied social sciences). In the logistic regression model for predicting risk use or probable alcohol dependence, the risk factors were: being male, younger than 40 years old, tobacco use, health problems, teaching in the area of applied social sciences, and use of hypnotic drugs. The findings of this study point to the need for feasible interventions based on the risk factors identified in this research, aiming at the success of strategies for prevention and reduction of work-related stress and alcohol use among university professors

Introducción: Ingresar a la universidad implica múltiples cambios que repercuten en el estado nutricional y pueden condicionar la aparición de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles al futuro. Objetivo: Comparar el estado nutricional de las estudiantes de Nutrición y Dietética de México y Colombia mediante mediciones antropométricas y el consumo de alimentos. Material y Métodos: Se efectuó un estudio descriptivo, exploratorio, multidimensional de tipo transversal; con un tamaño de la muestra de 583 estudiantes elegidos aleatoriamente en centros universitarios de Colombia y México. Se aplicó una encuesta que indagó sobre el consumo de alimentos y el estilo de vida de las estudiantes, la toma de datos antropométricos se realizó de manera presencial mediante la técnica The International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Se emplearon las técnicas estadísticas: test de comparación de proporciones, MANOVA y distribuciones de frecuencias. Resultados: Se presentó mayor carga genética para diabetes mellitus, hipertensión arterial, cáncer y obesidad en las estudiantes mexicanas; quienes reportaron más sobrepeso y enfermedades gastrointestinales. El consumo frecuente de queso entero, huevo, grasas saturadas y poliinsaturadas, azúcares y dulces, y productos fritos fue mayor en las colombianas; mientras que el consumo de queso bajo en grasa, leguminosas y mezclas vegetales, grasas monoinsaturadas, salsas, frutas, verduras y hortalizas, nueces y semillas, enlatados y bebidas alcohólicas, fue superior en las mexicanas. Conclusiones: Se reportan cambios alimenticios desde el ingreso a la carrera, lo cual es un factor protector para el desarrollo de enfermedades crónicas no trasmisibles(AU)


Introduction: Entering the university implies multiple changes that affect the nutritional status and can condition the appearance of chronic non-communicable diseases in the future. Objective: To compare the nutritional status of Nutrition and Dietetics students from Mexico and Colombia through anthropometric measurements and food consumption. Material and Methods: Through the application of a survey, the food consumption and lifestyle of the students were investigated. The anthropometric data collection was carried out using the techniques adopted by The International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). With the data obtained, a descriptive, exploratory, multidimensional and cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample size was 583 students randomly chosen from university centers in Colombia and Mexico. The statistical techniques used included: comparison test for proportions, MANOVA and frequency distributions. Results: There was a higher genetic load for diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, cancer and obesity in Mexican students who reported more overweight and gastrointestinal diseases. The frequent consumption of whole cheese, eggs, saturated and polyunsaturated fats, sugars and sweets and fried products was higher in Colombian women while the consumption of low-fat cheese, legumes and vegetable mixtures, monounsaturated fats, sauces, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, canned goods and alcoholic beverages was higher in Mexican women, presenting a significant difference (p <0.05). Conclusions: Dietary changes are reported from the beginning of the studies, which is a protective factor for the development of non-communicable chronic diseases. There must be consistency among knowledge, eating practices and lifestyle to maintain health and achieve greater credibility of the knowledge imparted(AU)

INTRODUCCIÓN. Los trastornos mentales y por consumo de sustancias causan el 19% de todos los años de vida ajustados por discapacidad y el 36% de todos los años vividos con discapacidad. Representan un tercio de la carga total de enfermedades en la población con edades comprendidas entre 10 y 45 años. OBJETIVO. Analizar el trastorno mental y el consumo de alcohol en estudiantes universitarios. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS. Estudio analítico transversal, de campo. Población y muestra conocida de 125 estudiantes universitarios de primero a quinto semestre de la carrera rediseñada de Pedagogía de la Actividad Física y del Deporte de la Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, noviembre 2019. La técnica empleada para la recolección de datos fue el Reactivo Psicológico. Se aplicaron: Test de Identificación de los Trastornos Debidos al Consumo de Alcohol - AUDIT y Cuestionario de Salud General GHQ-28. Se calculó frecuencia y porcentaje de niveles de alteración de la salud mental y de consumo de alcohol. Se tabuló datos y analizó la asociación con el estadístico Chi cuadrado χ². RESULTADOS. El 79,2% (99; 125) presentaron un nivel de alteración de la salud mental leve; el 72,8% (91; 125) no reflejaron problemas relacionados con el consumo de alcohol; se encontró asociación significativa entre niveles de alteración de la salud mental y consumo de alcohol. CONCLUSIÓN. Se determinó asociación significativa entre el trastorno mental y el consumo de alcohol, con bajo nivel de alteración de la salud mental y ausencia de problemas relacionados con el alcohol.


INTRODUCTION. Mental and substance use disorders cause 19% of all disability-adjusted life years and 36% of all years lived with disability. They account for one-third of the total burden of disease in the population aged 10-45 years. OBJECTIVE. To analyze mental disorders and alcohol consumption in university students. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cross-sectional, analytical, field study. Population and known sample of 125 university students from first to fifth semester of the redesigned career of Pedagogy of Physical Activity and Sport of the National University of Chimborazo, November 2019. The technique used for data collection was the Psychological Reactive. The following were applied: Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - AUDIT and General Health Questionnaire GHQ-28. Frequency and percentage of mental health and alcohol consumption disorders were calculated. Data were tabulated and the association was analyzed with the Chi-square χ² statistic. RESULTS. 79,2% (99; 125) had a mild level of mental health disturbance; 72,8% (91; 125) did not reflect problems related to alcohol consumption; significant association was found between levels of mental health disturbance and alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION. An significant association was found between mental disorder and alcohol consumption, with low levels of mental health impairment and absence of alcohol-related problems.

AIMS: The limited existing research on drinking games and predrinking among university students in Argentina, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand suggests that participation in these risky drinking practices is relatively widespread among this population. Drinking norms and alcohol use can vary across countries and in different regions of the globe. The measurement of drinking games and predrinking participation between studies also differs, making cross-country comparisons difficult. The present study explored differences in past month participation in drinking games and predrinking among university students from a large public university in Argentina, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. METHODS: The data analytic sample consisted of 1134 university students (ages 18-25, Mage = 20.2 years; 72.6% women) from Argentina (n = 349), Australia (n = 280), Canada (n = 262), and New Zealand (n = 243) who reported weekly alcohol consumption. Students completed a confidential survey on drinking attitudes and behaviors. RESULTS: Controlling for age, gender, and weekly drink consumption, there were no cross-country differences in past month participation in predrinking. In contrast, university students from Canada and New Zealand were more likely to have played a drinking game in the past month than students from Australia and Argentina. CONCLUSIONS: The present finding suggest that university students from Argentina, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are equally likely to participate in predrinking regardless of country; however, the likelihood of playing drinking games differs as a function of country site.

AIMS: The present study examined which types of alcohol protective behavioral strategies ([PBSs], Manner of Drinking [MOD] strategies, Serious Harm Reduction [SHR] or Limiting/Stopping Drinking strategies [LSD]) mediate the effects of a comprehensive number of distal antecedents on alcohol drinking quantity and alcohol-related negative consequences. METHODS: A sample of 762 last-month college freshman drinkers from Argentina (Mean age = 19.60 ± 3.80) completed a survey that assessed alcohol outcomes (drinking quantity during a typical week and alcohol-related negative consequences), frequency of use of PBS and a set of distal antecedents (i.e. age at drinking onset, drinking motives, college alcohol beliefs and impulsivity-like traits). RESULTS: MOD significantly mediated the effects of college alcohol beliefs (higher beliefs were associated with lower MOD use) and coping motives (higher coping motives were associated with lower MOD use) on alcohol outcomes. SHR significantly mediated the effects of sex (women reported more frequent SHR use) and enhancement motives (higher motivation was associated with lower SHR use) on alcohol-related negative consequences. CONCLUSION: Our findings partially support a mediational role of PBS in the association between risk factors and alcohol outcomes, and offer valuable information for the design of interventions to reduce alcohol use in South-American college students. More studies examining PBS as mediators of distal antecedents are needed to fully understand the peculiarities of these associations in different cultures.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever o consumo de álcool entre os estudantes dos anos iniciais da graduação de Enfermagem e analisar se há relação entre tal consumo e o desempenho acadêmico nesse grupo. Método: estudo transversal, quantitativo realizado com 121 estudantes de uma universidade. Utilizaram-se o teste para identificação de problemas relacionados ao uso de álcool (AUDIT) e autorrelato do estudante sobre seu desempenho acadêmico. Resultados: os estudantes que moravam com os amigos bebiam mais do que aqueles que moravam com familiares ou sozinhos. O desempenho acadêmico foi semelhante entre os participantes abstêmios e os que consumiam álcool. Conclusão: os estudantes dos anos iniciais da graduação apresentaram características específicas, como: alto percentual de abstêmios e/ou consumidores de baixo risco, consumo que não afetava o desempenho acadêmico, porém influenciado pelas pessoas com quem moravam. Assim, recomendam-se abordagens de prevenção sensíveis às características específicas de cada subgrupo.

La prueba se utilizó para identificar problemas relacionados con el consumo de alcohol (AUDIT) y el autoinforme del estudiante sobre su desempeño académico. Resultados: los estudiantes que vivían con amigos bebían más que los que vivían con familiares o solos. El rendimiento académico fue similar entre los abstemios y los que consumían alcohol. Conclusión: los estudiantes en los primeros años de graduación tenían características específicas, tales como: alto porcentaje de abstenciones y / o consumidores de bajo riesgo, consumo que no afectaba el rendimiento académico, pero influenciado por las personas con las que convivían. Por tanto, se recomiendan enfoques de prevención sensibles a las características específicas de cada subgrupo.


ABSTRACT Objective: to describe alcohol consumption in the students in the initial years of Nursing graduation and to analyze whether there is a relationship between such consumption and academic performance in this group. Method: cross-sectional, a quantitative study carried out with 121 students from a university. The test was used to identify problems related to alcohol use (AUDIT) and the student's self-report about his academic performance. Results: students who lived with friends drank more than those who lived with family members or alone. Academic performance was similar between abstainers and those who consumed alcohol. Conclusion: students in the initial years of graduation had specific characteristics, such as a high percentage of abstainers and/or low-risk consumers, consumption that did not affect academic performance, but was influenced by the people with whom they lived. Thus, prevention approaches sensitive to the specific characteristics of each subgroup are recommended.
