This study was conducted to determine the nutrient status, changes in the hematological and selected blood metabolites profile of mid-lactating dairy cows during wet and dry seasons under Indonesia's tropical environment. Forty mid-lactating FH cows were selected from the Livestock Farm Complex (Dairy Community) in Yogyakarta, with an average body weight of 421.77±28.60 kg and 1st to 3rd lactation. They were housed in a semi-open housing system with concrete flooring covered with rubber mats and provided with feeders and drinkers. They were fed twice daily, and drinking water was given ad libitum. Measurements were made on the intakes of feed (and nutrients). The variables measured were nutrient intakes, blood hematology, and metabolites profile and measured over two seasons, namely wet and dry seasons. The results of the measurements made were compared using independent t-test analysis. The result indicated that intake of CP, RLYM, RNEUT, NEUT, RBC, HGB, MCV, MCHC, MPV, albumin, urea nitrogen, and total protein was differed significantly (P < 0.05) between wet and dry seasons, respectively. It was concluded that the nutrient status of mid-lactating dairy cows in the wet season was higher than during the dry season, especially the intake of CP. In the wet season, it has a positive effect on the basic hematological parameters.

Haemonchus contortus is the major gastrointestinal parasite of sheep raised in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. This trial aimed to evaluate the influence of H. contortus infection on the bone marrow response of Santa Ines (SI) and Ile de France (IF) suckling lambs experimentally infected with H. contortus. Fourteen SI lambs and 12 IF lambs were randomized in four groups: infected SI (n=8), non-infected SI (n=6), infected IF (n=8) and non-infected IF (n=4). Lambs of infected groups were submitted to 27 infections, conducted every two days, from 14 to 68 days of age, and each lamb received a total of 5400 H. contortus infective larvae (L3). Ten blood samples were obtained during the experimental period to be used for erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, packed cell volume and total plasma protein estimation. Additionally, it was carried out a differential leukocyte count. Lambs from control groups did not shed eggs in faeces all over the experiment, while infected Santa Ines and Ile de France lambs presented means of 2963 EPG (Eggs Per Gram of faeces) and 8175 EPG in the last sampling (P<0.05), respectively. Infected Santa Ines lambs had an increase in eosinophil release, however differences (P<0.05) on circulation number in comparison with infected Ile de France lambs were identified only in the last sampling (54 days post first infection). The mild H. cortortus infection did not produce significant changes in the blood variables of the Ile de France and Santa Ines suckling lambs.(AU)

Este estudo objetivou avaliar a influência da infecção por H. contortus na resposta medular de cordeiros lactentes das raças Santa Inês (SI) e Ile de France (IF) infectados experimentalmente com H. contortus. Quatorze cordeiros SI e 12 cordeiros IF, foram distribuídos em quatro grupos: SI infectado (n=8), SI não infectado (n=6), IF infectado (n=8) e IF não infectado (n=4). Cordeiros dos grupos infectados foram submetidos a 27 infecções, realizadas a cada dois dias, do 14º até 68º dia de vida, com um total de 5400 larvas infectantes (L3) de H. contortus por animal. Foram realizadas 10 coletas de sangue ao longo do período experimental para determinação do volume globular, proteínas plasmáticas totais, contagem de eritrócitos e leucócitos, além do diferencial de leucócitos. Cordeiros controles não infectados não eliminaram ovos nas fezes durante todo o experimento, enquanto que os cordeiros Santa Ines e Ile de France infectados apresentaram em média 2963 ovos por grama de fezes (OPG) e 8175 OPG na última coleta (P<0,05), respectivamente. Cordeiros Santa Inês infectados tiveram um aumento na produção de eosinófilos, mas diferenças (P<0.05) no número de eosinófilos sanguíneos em comparação a cordeiros Ile de France infectados foram detectadas somente na última coleta (54 dias após a primeira infecção). A infecção leve por H. cortortus não induziu alterações significativas nas variáveis sanguíneas de cordeiros lactentes Ile de France e Santa Inês.(AU)

O perfil metabólico é utilizado como monitoramento rotineiro para o diagnóstico de transtornos metabólicos, deficiências nutricionais e como preventivo de transtornos subclínicos, além da pesquisa de problemas de saúde e de desempenho de um rebanho. Neste contexto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência de diferentes dietas líquidas contendo soro de queijo e colostro sobre os perfis dos metabólitos séricos de bezerros durante a fase de aleitamento. Foram utilizados 24 bezerros mestiços provenientes de rebanhos leiteiros da região, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos e oito repetições: LI = Leite integral (controle); LS = 50% Leite integral + 50% de Soro de queijo in natura; SC = 70% de Soro de queijo in natura + 30% Colostro. Semanalmente foram coletadas amostras de sangue por punção jugular externa, no período da manhã, antes do fornecimento da dieta líquida e duas horas após a ingestão desta. As concentrações dos parâmetros séricos avaliados diferiram entre os tratamentos, porém sem comprometer o desempenho dos animais. Desse modo, a utilização de soro de queijo associado ao colostro apresenta-se como forma viável de redução de custos com aleitamento de bezerros, visto que possíveis déficits causados pelas diferenças nutricionais das dietas líquidas são supridos pelos alimentos sólidos, não afetando os perfis dos metabólitos séricos relacionados ao status protéico e energético.(AU)


Metabolic profile is used as routine monitoring for the diagnosis of metabolic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and as a preventive of subclinical disorders, in addition to research health issues and performance of a herd. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different liquid diets containing whey cheese and colostrum on the serum biochemistry profile of calves. Twenty-four crossbred calves from dairy herds in the region, distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments and eight replicates: LI = Whole milk (control); LS = 50% Whole milk + 50% cheese whey in nature; SC = 70% of cheese whey in natura + 30% Colostrum. Weekly blood samples by jugular puncture were collected in the morning, before the supply of liquid diet and two hours after eating this. The serum concentrations of the evaluated parameters differ between treatments, but without compromising animal performance. Thus, the use of whey associated with colostrum presents itself as a viable cost reduction with feeding calves, since possible nutritional deficits caused by differences in liquid diets are supplied by solid food form, not affecting the profiles of the metabolites related to serum protein and energy status.(AU)

The effect of moderate exposure to ethanol during late gestation was studied in terms of its interaction with moderate exposure during nursing from an intoxicated dam. A further issue was whether behavioral effects of ethanol, especially the enhanced ethanol intake known to occur after moderate ethanol prenatally or during nursing, depend upon teratological effects that may include death of neurons in the main olfactory bulb (MOB). During gestational days 17-20 rats were given 0, 1 or 2g/kg ethanol doses intragastrically (i.g.). After parturition these dams were given a dose of 2.5g/kg ethanol i.g. each day and allowed to perform regular nursing activities. During postnatal days (PDs) 15 and 16, ethanol intake of pups was assessed along with aspects of their general activity. In a second experiment pups given the same prenatal treatment as above were tested for blood ethanol concentration (BEC) in response to an ethanol challenge on PD6. A third experiment (Experiment 2b) assessed stereologically the number of cells in the granular cell layer of the MOB on PD7, as a function of analogous pre- and postnatal ethanol exposures. Results revealed that ethanol intake during the third postnatal week was increased by prenatal as well as postnatal ethanol exposure, with a few interesting qualifications. For instance, pups given 1g/kg prenatally did not have increased ethanol intake unless they also had experienced ethanol during nursing. There were no effects of ethanol on either BECs or conventional teratology (cell number). This increases the viability of an explanation of the effects of prenatal and early postnatal ethanol on later ethanol intake in terms of learning and memory.

The objective of this study was to compare serum IgG concentrations, blood metabolites indicative of nutritional status, weight gain and mortality rate in goat kids fed a commercial colostral supplement containing immunoglobulins against several pathogen microorganisms, prior to the ingestion of the mother colostrum, and goat kids ingesting natural colostrum only. There was no difference in serum IgG concentrations between 27 kids fed a colostrum supplement (20 g, derived from cow lacteal secretions) prior to the kids' first meal (658+/-703 mg dl(-1)) and 21 kids ingesting maternal colostrum freely (1011+/-1140 mg dl(-1)) at 24 hours of birth. Hematocrit values, serum glucose and urea concentrations at 24 hours and 5 days of age were unaffected by treatment. Serum total proteins were 14% higher (P<0.05) in the unsuplemented group than in the supplemented group at 5 d of age. There was no significant difference between the supplemented and unsupplemented kids in daily weight gain from birth to 70 days of age (92+/-4.8 vs 102+/-5.1 g day(-1)). Mortality was 4% for kids receiving the colostrum supplement as compared with 0.0% for kids ingesting maternal colostrum only. Results suggest that, in intensively managed non-dairy goats with kiddings in summer, the supplementation of this commercial colostrum derived from cow lacteal secretions and containing antibodies against diverse pathogens organisms did not enhanced growth, survival or immunity under the farming conditions of this study.

BACKGROUND: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is highly concentrated in the mammalian nervous and visual system. The fatty acid, which is required by the fetus and the newborn, is supplied by the mother from their tissue reservoirs. It has been suggested that mother's supplementation with DHA during pregnancy and even before pregnancy. Different sources of DHA are available for supplementation such as: single-cell algae triglycerides (TG), egg's yolk phospholipids (PL), DHA ethyl esther (EE), and sn-2 DHA monoacylglyceride (MG). We evaluated comparatively the effectiveness of these different DHA sources to produce tissue DHA accretion and to increase milk DHA content. METHODS: Female Wistar rats fed a diet which provided no DHA, were daily supplemented by 40 days before mating (BM) and during the pregnancy with either TG, PL, EE, or MG to an amount which provided 8 mg/kg b.w. of DHA. Samples of blood plasma, erythrocytes, hepatic and adipose tissue were obtained from rats at the BM condition and after the delivery (AD), and milk samples were also obtained from the gastric content of the pups nursed by the rats at day 3, 11 and 20 of suckling. Samples were processed to assess DHA and arachidonic acid (AA) content by gas-chromatography. RESULTS: TG, PL, EE, and MG supplementation produced a similar intestinal absorption of DHA as estimated from the plasma DHA at the BM condition. However, PL and MG supplementation produced a higher accretion of DHA into erythrocytes, hepatic, and adipose tissue than TG and EE supplementation at the BM condition. AA content was not modified by the different supplementing oils. A reduction of the DHA content of plasma, erythrocytes, hepatic and adipose tissue at the AD condition was observed, and a reduction of AA for the hepatic and adipose tissues was also observed, suggesting the importance of these tissues as DHA and AA reservoirs. Milk secretion from PL and MG supplemented rats showed a higher DHA content than secretion from TG- and EE-supplemented rats. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that PL and MG supplementation provides higher tissue DHA accretion and higher milk DHA content than TG and EE supplementation. However, we were not able to visualize the comparative advantages derived from PL vs. MG supplementation.

This study investigated the influence of chronic hyperthyroidism on mammary function in lactating rats and the effects on their pups. Thyroxine-treated (10 microg per 100 g body weight per day; hyperthyroid (HT)) or vehicle-treated rats were mated 2 weeks after the start of treatment and killed with their litters on days 7, 14 and 21 of lactation. Serum concentrations of triiodothyronine (T(3)) and tetraiodothyronine (T(4)) increased in thyroxine-treated rats. In HT mothers, serum prolactin decreased on day 7 and day 14 of lactation, whereas insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and progesterone concentrations decreased, and corticosterone increased on day 7 of lactation. In HT pups, T(4) concentration increased on day 7 and day 14 of lactation, whereas T(3) increased only on day 14 of lactation, and growth hormone increased on day 7 of lactation. Mammary prolactin binding sites did not vary, but there was an increase in the binding sites in the liver on day 14 of lactation in thyroxine-treated rats. In an acute suckling experiment, thyroxine-treated rats released less oxytocin, growth hormone and prolactin and excreted less milk than did control rats. Mammary casein, lactose and total lipid concentrations in thyroxine-treated rats were similar to those of control rats on day 14 of lactation. Histological studies of the mammary glands showed an increased proportion of alveoli showing reduced or no lumina and cells with condensed nuclei on day 14 and day 21 of lactation; the TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling (TUNEL) test revealed an increase in apoptosis in alveolar cells on day 21 of lactation in thyroxine-treated rats. Expression of SGP-2, a gene expressed during mammary involution, increased in thyroxine-treated rats on day 14 and day 21 of lactation, whereas expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5, a proapoptotic signal, was unchanged. Bcl-2, which promotes survival of mammary gland epithelial cells was unchanged, whereas expression of IGF-I, which also promotes survival of mammary gland epithelial cells, increased on day 21 of lactation in thyroxine-treated rats. These results indicate that thyroxine treatment produces some milk stasis as a result of impairments in suckling induced release of oxytocin that may initiate the first stage of mammary involution, increasing apoptosis in a gland that is otherwise actively producing and secreting milk.

Biochemical values are widely related with environmental agents, sex and age, and are used in disease diagnosis. Numerous reports have been published on the biochemical parameters of different breeds of horses. However, there is a paucity of information concerning Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), ceruloplasmin, copper and zinc determinations in the serum. Blood samples from a total of 60 horses of the Mangalarga-Paulista breed, representing three age groups (0 to 4 months old, 6 to 18 months old and adult) were examined. Male horses have a higher mean value of SOD, ceruloplasmin and copper than do females. No significant sex-related difference was observed in serum zinc content of weaned and adult horses. SOD activity was significantly higher in adult animals. Since SOD has a protective effect against superoxide free radical toxicity and possesses anti-inflammatory activity, it is reasonable to assume that the increased activity of this enzyme may be due to an adaptation mechanism which protects the adult animal against oxygen toxicity.
