Bidens pilosa is classified as an invasive plant and has become a problematic weed to many agricultural crops. This species strongly germinates, grows and reproduces and competing for nutrients with local plants. To lessen the influence of Bidens pilosa, therefore, converting this harmful species into carbon materials as adsorbents in harm-to-wealth and valorization strategies is required. Here, we synthesized a series of magnetic composites based on MFe2O4 (M = Ni, Co, Zn, Fe) supported on porous carbon (MFOAC) derived from Bidens pilosa by a facile hydrothermal method. The Bidens pilosa carbon was initially activated by condensed H3PO4 to increase the surface chemistry. We observed that porous carbon loaded NiFe2O4 (NFOAC) reached the highest surface area (795.7 m2 g-1), followed by CoFe2O4/AC (449.1 m2 g-1), Fe3O4/AC (426.1 m2 g-1), ZnFe2O4/AC (409.5 m2 g-1). Morphological results showed nanoparticles were well-dispersed on the surface of carbon. RhB, MO, and MR dyes were used as adsorbate to test the adsorption by MFOAC. Effect of time (0-360 min), concentration (5-50 mg L-1), dosage (0.05-0.2 g L-1), and pH (3-9) on dyes adsorption onto MFOAC was investigated. It was found that NFOAC obtained the highest maximum adsorption capacity against dyes, RhB (107.96 mg g-1) < MO (148.05 mg g-1) < MR (153.1 mg g-1). Several mechanisms such as H bonding, π-π stacking, cation-π interaction, and electrostatic interaction were suggested. With sufficient stability and capacity, NFOAC can be used as potential adsorbent for real water treatment systems.

Gui Zhen Cao is an herbal formulation that has been documented in Chinese traditional medicine as a remedy for diarrhea, dysentery, inflammation, and toxicity. The sources of this formulation (Bidens pilosa L., Bidens biternata (Lour.) Merr. & Sherff, Bidens bipinnata L.) are also listed in ethnomedicinal reports all over the world. In this study, all these plants are tested for in vitro anticandida activity. A quantitative evaluation of the phytochemicals in all these plants indicated that their vegetative parts are rich in tannins, saponins, oxalates, cyanogenic glycoside and lipids; moreover, the roots have high percentages of alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenols. The results indicated significant anticandida activity, especially for the hexane extract of B. bipinnata leaves which inhibited C. albicans (42.54%), C. glabrata (46.98%), C. tropicalis (50.89%), C. krusei (40.56%), and C. orthopsilosis (50.24%). The extract was subjected to silica gel chromatography and 220 fractions were obtained. Purification by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) and Gas Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis led to the identification of two anticandida compounds: dehydroabietic and linoleic acid having an inhibition of 85 and 92%, respectively.

Two new three-phase solvent systems combined with elution-extrusion counter-current chromatography mode were used to study the chemical constituents in Bidens pilosa Linn. var. radiata Sch. Bip. The first novel solvent system consisted of n-hexane, acetonitrile, chloroform, and water in a ratio of 5:5:1:5, which was selected for elution-extrusion counter-current chromatography to separate the n-hexane extraction part. A total of six constituents were obtained from this part in the up phase as the stationary phase and the middle phase as the mobile phase. The second novel solvent system, composed of n-hexane-butyl acetate-acetonitrile-water (3:1:4:3, v/v/v/v), was used for separating ethyl acetate extract of Bidens pilosa Linn. var. radiata Sch. Bip. Eight compounds were successfully isolated using elution-extrusion counter-current chromatography elution-extrusion mode. Fourteen chemical constituents were identified as 2-ß-D-glucopyranosytoxy-1-hydroxy-5(E)-tridecene-7,9,11-triyne (Y1), 3-ß-D-glucopyranosyloxy -1-hydroxy-6(E)-tetradecene-8,10,12-triyne (Y2), 1, 2-dihydroxy-5(E)-tridecene-7,9, 11-triyne (Y3), isorhamnetin (Y4), kaempferol (Y5), icthyothereolacetate (Y6), quercetin-3-O-ß-D- galactopyranosyl-7-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (W1), quercetin 3-O-ß-L-rhamnopyranoside (W2), neosperidin dihydrochalcone (W3), quercetin (W4), quercetagetin-3,6,4' -trimethoxyl- 7-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (W5), taxifolin (W6), luteolin (W7), and apigenin (W8) by spectra of 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR data. Among them, compounds Y1, Y2, Y3, and Y6 belong to polyacetylene compounds, and the rest were flavonoids. In addition, counter-current chromatography has been used to separate polyacetylene compounds for the first time. All compounds in this method were isolated from Bidens pilosa Linn. var. radiata Sch. Bip. for the first time.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As a traditional Chinese medicinal, Bidens bipinnata L. has been used to treat many diseases with a long history in China. The anti-diabetic effects of extract from B. bipinnata have been demonstrated in the previous reports. AIM OF THE STUDY: The protective effects of flavonoids-rich extract from B. bipinnata (BBTF) on cell damage induced by H2O2 in pancreatic ß cell and its potential mechanisms were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MTT, ROS production, nuclear staining and flow cytometry assays were adopted to determine the effects of BBTF on cell viability, production of ROS and cell apoptosis in H2O2-treated INS-1 cell. Cell apoptosis-related proteins expressions were detected by Western blot assay. RESULTS: Pre-treatment of BBTF could significantly increase INS-1 cell viability, inhibit the production of intracellular ROS and reduced the characteristic features of cell apoptosis induced by H2O2 in INS-1 cells. The studies of the underlying mechanism showed that BBTF could regulate Bax and Bcl-2 proteins expressions, suppress the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK and p38, as well as down-regulate Fas and FasL proteins expressions induced by H2O2. The expressions of caspase-8, caspase-9 and caspase-3 were therefore decreased. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that flavonoids-rich extract from B. bipinnata could be a natural agent in diabetic prevention and therapy.

Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) has been used historically in traditional Asian medicine and is known to have a variety of biological effects. However, the specific active compounds responsible for the individual pharmacological effects of Bidens pilosa L. (B. pilosa) extract have not yet been made clear. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory phytochemicals obtained from B. pilosa. We isolated a flavonoids-type phytochemical, isookanin, from B. pilosa through bioassay-guided fractionation based on its capacity to inhibit inflammation. Some of isookanin's biological properties have been reported; however, the anti-inflammatory mechanism of isookanin has not yet been studied. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory activities of isookanin using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. We have shown that isookanin reduces the production of proinflammatory mediators (nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2) by inhibiting the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Isookanin also inhibited the expression of activator protein 1 (AP-1) and downregulated the LPS-induced phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and c-jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) in the MAPK signaling pathway. Additionally, isookanin inhibited proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß)) in LPS-induced THP-1 cells. These results demonstrate that isookanin could be a potential therapeutic candidate for inflammatory disease.

Bidens bipinnata L. is a folk medicinal plant in China that shows significant antihyperlipidemia effectiveness. However, studies of the underlying mechanism study are lacking. In order to explore the potential action sites and the underlying mechanism of treating hyperlipidemic, this work undertook tissue distribution and molecular docking research on the markers of B. bipinnata L., which were obtained through serum pharmacochemistry and network database retrieval. The results showed that seven compounds (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, rutin, hyperoside, bipinnate polyacetylenicloside, luteolin and quercetin) were screened out as markers. Owing to the diversity of chemical structures, they exhibited an inconsistent trend in tissue distribution. However, all of them had high levels in the liver and no specific distribution in other tissues. More interestingly, seven proteins-HMGCR (1HWK), NR3C1 (4P6W), CYP1A2 (2HI4), RXRA (4PP3), CES1 (1MX1), HSD11B1 (2RBE) and CYP1A1 (4I8V)-showed significant binding affinity with three or more markers, suggesting that they may be the target proteins of B. bipinnata L. This study preliminarily sheds light on the tissue distribution and targets of B. bipinnata L., providing some useful information on the underlying mechanisms of the antihyperlipidemia effect.

Bidens pilosa plant has been shown to produce okanin flavanone glycoside and its chalcone derivative. In most other plants, due to chalcone isomerase enzyme, the flavanone tends to exist in higher proportions than their chalcone precursors. Herein we have utilized liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry approach and shown that within the leaves of Bidens pilosa plant the two okanin glycosides exist in unusual equal proportional distribution, which indicates that Bidens pilosa plant is an alternative rich source of these highly sought-after antioxidant molecules. The aglycone okanin chalcone (ONC) and okanin flavanone (ONF) have experimentally been shown to exhibit antioxidant activity. However, experimental findings have not conclusively determined which of the two compounds is a more potent antiradical than the other. Herein, the density functional theory (DFT) method is utilized to establish, from structural and thermodynamic energetic considerations, the preferred antioxidant molecule between the two aglycone okanins. A theoretical study on the antioxidant properties of ONC and ONF has been performed by considering their radical scavenging and metal cation (Mn+, where M = Cu(II) or Fe (III)) chelation ability. The study has been performed using B3LYP/6-31 + G(d,p) method. In the case of the metal chelation mechanism, the LANL2DZ pseudo-potential was selected to describe the selected Mn+ cations. The results of the study suggest that ONC is a better radical scavenger than ONF because of the extended electron delocalization on its neutral radical, which is due to the presence of conjugation within the ONC neutral radical after hydrogen atom abstraction. In the metal chelation mechanism, it is noted that the binding energies depend on the media, the nature of the ligand and the cation and the cation coordination site on the ligand. The charge and the spin density on Mn+ decrease on coordination to the ligand. The ability of the ligands to reduce Mn+ cations, coupled with the strong Mn+ binding properties, has significant implication on the antioxidant ability of both okanins. However, since ONC⋅⋅⋅M+n interaction results in higher binding energy than ONF⋅⋅⋅M+n interaction, the implication is that ONC is a preferred free metal ion chelator than ONF.

This study investigates the effects of three medicinal herbal extracts, namely Bidens pilosa (BPE), Lonicera japonica (LJE), and Cyathula officinalis (COE), on nonspecific immune parameters of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) in vitro and in vivo. During in vitro tests, BPE treatment increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in a dose-dependent manner in primary head kidney leukocytes. Similarly, ROS production rates were enhanced by LJE (50 and 100 mg/ml) and COE (100 mg/ml). This suggests that these three herbal extracts possess immunostimulating properties. We then conducted two feeding trials to examine the effects of these three herbal extracts on growth and innate immune parameters of cobia, and sought an optimal dietary supplementation proportion required for activating the non-specific immune responses. In the first trial, we supplemented the diet with 1, 5, or 10% of the individual extracts. After a ten-week feeding trial, no negative impacts on weight gain, feed conversion rate, and survival rate were observed in fish offered experimental diets. Further, ROS production, phagocytic capacity of the head kidney leukocytes, and serum lysozyme activity were enhanced by differing degrees in fish fed the herbal extracts compared to fish in the control group. A similar albumin/globulin ratio was seen between each experimental group and the control group regardless of the type and dose of herbal extract used, indicating these medicinal herbal extracts are safe for cobia. We then performed a 30-day feeding trial with lower extract concentrations (1, 3, and 5% of the diet) to identify dose responses in cobia at various time points so that we could establish a cost-effective manner of administering the three extracts for cobia. All BPE fed fish had higher ROS production compared to the control group, while phagocytosis rate and index were simultaneously raised in only the BPE30 group (3% BPE). Immune parameters such as ROS production, phagocytic rate, and serum lysozyme activity were triggered when fish received 30 g LJE per kg of feed. However, ROS production only increased in the LJE10 group (1% LJE) on day 30 and was not enhanced in the LJE50 group (5% LJE). Additionally, although the phagocytic rate and phagocytic index were induced in the LJE50 group, serum lysozyme activity was not elevated in this group (LJE50) at any time point examined. ROS production was greatly improved in all COE fed groups, but only the COE30 group (3% COE) showed prolonged enhanced phagocytic rate over the 30-day feeding trial.

Cicatrização de ferida é um processo dinâmico, que tem por objetivo restaurar a continuidade do tecido lesionado. No entanto, em alguns casos, é necessário favorecer condições adequadas para viabilizar o processo fisiológico. Neste estudo foram utilizados ratos Wistar, divididos aleatoriamente entre cinco grupos, com 12 animais cada, sendo eles: grupo P (Bidens pilosa L.), grupo mel, grupo Co1 (pomada comercial alopática), grupo Co2 (pomada comercial homeopática) e grupo CT (controle). As lesões foram geradas por incisão com punch de 8mm, sendo tratadas diariamente de forma tópica. Foram eutanasiados quatro animais por grupo, no terceiro, sétimo e 14º dias do experimento, e o material coletado foi armazenado em formalina 10% e encaminhado para processamento histológico. Posteriormente, realizou-se a contagem de leucócitos mononucleares, fibroblastos e neovasos e avaliou-se a arquitetura de fibras colágenas. Os resultados da contagem foram analisados pela ANOVA, seguida pelo teste de Tukey (P<0,05). O modelo experimental proposto neste estudo demonstrou que todos os tratamentos apresentaram potencial cicatrizante, com exceção do mel. A aplicação tópica do creme do extrato de Bidens pilosa L. a 10% apresentou melhor perfil anti-inflamatório; a pomada alopática apresentou boa aderência à superfície da lesão e a pomada homeopática, grande potencial angiogênico, com menor tempo de cicatrização.(AU)


Wound healing is a dynamic process that aims to restore the continuity of injured tissue. However, in some cases it is necessary to favor adequate conditions to enable the physiological process. Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups with 12 animals each, namely: group P (Bidens pilosa L.), group honey, group Co1 (commercial allopathic ointment), group Co2 (commercial homeopathic ointment) and group CT (control). The lesions were generated by an 8mm punch incision and were treated topically daily. Four animals per group were euthanized on the 3rd, 7th and 14th day of the experiment and the collected material was stored in 10% formalin and sent for histological processing, after which mononuclear, fibroblasts and neovascular leukocytes were counted and collagen fiber architecture was evaluated. Counting results were analyzed by ANOVA, followed by Tukey test (p <0.05). The experimental model proposed in this study showed that all treatments had healing potential, except honey. The topical application of 10% Bidens pilosa L. extract cream showed the best anti-inflammatory profile; Allopathic ointment showed good adhesion to the surface of the lesion and homeopathic ointment showed great angiogenic potential with shorter healing time.(AU)

Bidens pilosa L. is a medicinal plant popularly used for treatment of liver diseases. In this study, the dry extract of aerial parts of Bidens pilosa and Silymarin, a phytocomplex obtained from the Silybum marianum fruits and marketed as hepatoprotective, were tested in dogs experimentally acutely intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride. The liver activity was evaluated by hematological and biochemical profiles, and histological and ultrasound analyzes. It was observed that the lowest serum activities of ALT and serum concentrations of total bilirubin occurred in the groups treated with the dry extract of Bidens pilosa, while only decreased serum concentrations of total bilirubin occurred in the group treated with Silymarin. Best liver recovery was also observed for the dry extract of B. pilosa at a 400mg/Kg dose by ultrasonography. This study showed that the dry extract of Bidens pilosa acted more efficiently in the treatment of acute toxic hepatitis induced in dogs than Silymarin.(AU)


Bidens pilosa L. é uma planta medicinal utilizada popularmente para tratamento de doenças hepáticas. Neste trabalho, o extrato seco das partes aéreas da Bidens pilosa e a silimarina, um fitocomplexo obtido dos frutos da Silybum marianum e comercializado como hepatoprotetor, foram testados em cães intoxicados experimentalmente de forma aguda com tetracloreto de carbono. A atividade hepática foi avaliada por meio dos perfis hematológico e bioquímico, análises histológica e ultrassonográfica. Observou-se que, nos grupos tratados com o extrato seco da Bidens pilosa, ocorreram as menores atividades séricas da ALT e de concentrações séricas de bilirrubina total, enquanto no grupo tratado com silimarina, ocorreu apenas diminuição de concentrações séricas de bilirrubina total. Melhor recuperação hepática também foi verificada para o extrato seco de B. pilosa na dose de 400mg/kg por ultrassonografia. Este estudo evidenciou que o extrato seco da Bidens pilosa atuou de forma mais eficiente no tratamento da hepatite aguda tóxica induzida em cães do que a silimarina.(AU)

The extract of Bidens bipinnata L. exhibited wide spectrum of bioactivities owing to the presence of flavonoids. In this study, a purification process was developed to enrich the flavonoid-rich extract from B. bipinnata L. (BBTF). AB-8 resin was selected for the purification of total flavonoids. Response surface methodology coupled with Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the purification condition; it was optimized as pH 5.1, volume of ethanol 80 ml, flow rate of ethanol 1.8 bed volume per hour (BV/h) and concentration of ethanol 76.0%. The total flavonoid content of BBTF was 56.48% under the optimal conditions. The identification of flavonoids in BBTF was conducted using UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF MS. A total of 14 compounds, including 12 flavonoids, were identified in BBTF. Finally, the in vitro antioxidant activities, α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities of BBTF were comprehensively analyzed by an analytical hierarchy process. The results indicated that it exhibited higher bioactivities than the crude extract. These findings suggested that the optimized process could significantly enhance the purity of flavonoids and their bioactivities. This study showed a comprehensive analysis of a total flavonoid extract of B. bipinnata L. for the first time, which could provide a useful approach for its purification process and quality control as well as bioactivities.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Based on traditional medicine, infusions of Bidens species (Asteraceae) have been successfully used in the treatment of acute and chronic enteritis. Additionally, ethnopharmacological reports demonstrating the gastrointestinal, gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiulcerogenic and immunomodulatory potency of Bidens tripartita Linn. (Asteraceae) and its constituents make the plant a particularly interesting herbal drug candidate for the supportive treatment of functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to verify the effects of B. tripartita and its main flavonoid constituents on intestinal contractility patterns under ex vivo conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of B. tripartita preparations and their main flavonoids were identified using an alternative model of porcine isolated jejunum specimens. Using LC-ESI-MS, the effects of six different standardized extracts, aqueous (BT1), methanolic 50% (BT2), methanolic (BT3), diethyl ether (BT4), ethyl acetate (BT5) and butanol (BT6) (0.001-0.1 mg/mL), as well as three pure isolated flavonoids, luteolin (LUT), cynaroside (CYN) and flavanomarein (ION) (0.001-100 µM), were evaluated towards spontaneous and acetylcholine-induced motility. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: s: The results showed the potent prokinetic effects of the B. tripartita extracts and their flavonoids on jejunum smooth muscle. The myocontractile effect was observed on both spontaneous and acetylcholine-induced contractility. There were no substantial differences in the magnitude of myocontractile effects between all six extracts with the exception of the butanol extract which seemed to have a slightly stronger prokinetic effect than the other extracts. The use of extracts at the highest tested concentrations provoked an approximately 1.5-fold increased reaction to acetylcholine compared to the control treatment. The myocontractile effect of the single flavonoids justifies the hypothesis that these secondary metabolites are responsible for the prokinetic activity of all the tested extracts. Among the tested flavonoids, CYN appeared to be the most potent ingredient of B. tripartita; the increase in the response to acetylcholine in the presence of this compound exceeded 250% of the control reaction. In view of the obtained results, the range of functional gastrointestinal disorders in which B. tripartita could be expected to bring benefits include the predominantly constipative phases of irritable bowel syndrome and dyspeptic complaints in which treatment protocols usually involve gastroprokinetics.

Bidens gardneri Baker, popularly known as "picão-vermelho", has been used, traditionally, as a medicinal plant for the treatment of Diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to evaluate antidiabetic effect of leaves from B. gardneri aqueous extract (BGAE). We also evaluated in vitro anti-glycation potential. Chemical composition was analyzed based on a colorimetrics and HPLC methods. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), was performed in rats with different doses (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg). Alloxan-induced diabetic and hypercaloric diet-fed rats were treated with 300 mg/kg of BGAE, orally, for 10 days and then 10 weeks, respectively. The activity of intestinal disaccharidases (maltase, sucrase and lactase) and quantification of muscle and liver glycogen content were also evaluated. On chemical analysis, the extract showed high phenolics content and the chromatogram showed 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid as the major component. The extract presented inhibition in the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and disaccharidases activity. In OGTT the dose of 300 mg/kg significantly decreased the blood glucose. In diabetic animals, BGAE significantly decreased blood glucose levels, preventing weight loss. In addition, in hypercaloric diet-fed rats, the extract prevented hyperglycemia. Our results suggest that, aqueous extract of B. gardneri has a potential for therapeutic intervention of diabetes.

The effects of soil treatment with aqueous extracts from three hyperaccumulators on Cd and Pb accumulation by Solanum nigrum L. were determined. The stem (S-RG) and leaf extracts (L-RG) of Rorippaglobosa (Turcz.) Thell., and stem extract (S-BP) of Bidens pilosa L. significantly enhanced Cd and Pb total accumulation capacity of S. nigrum compared to control (by 44 %, 47 %, and 29 % for Cd and by 28 %, 28 % and 21 % for Pb, respectively), while EDTA caused its 9 % and 15 % decrease due to the plant biomass reduction (by 33 %). The leaching experiments reflected affinity of additives to metal mobilization in soils. The concentrations of total organic acid in S-RG, L-RG and S-BP were the highest among studied extracts, which besides the beneficial effect on the soil environment (microbe number and enzyme activities), may be partial reasons of strong promotion of S. nigrum accumulation capacity for Cd and Pb. It was shown that hyperaccumulation properties of a plant are not a prerequisite of enhancing effect of the plant-based soil additive on the metal accumulation capacity of the target living hyperaccumultor. The plant-based chelators were found to be promising candidates for EDTA and other chemicals replacement in promoting efficient and environmentally safe phytoremediation.

The effects of boiling and in vitro human simulated digestion on phenolic compounds and bioactivity of the African leafy green vegetable, Bidens pilosa, known as Blackjack in South Africa, was investigated and compared to the leafy green vegetable Spinacia oleracea (Spinach). Metabolites such as 3-caffeoylquinic acid, catechin, 4-caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin-3-O-robinobioside, rutin and quercetin-3-O-glucoside were dominant in the boiled methanolic compared with the raw methanolic extracts of the Blackjack. The total phenolic and flavonoid content generally decreased after in vitro complete digestion for both raw and boiled extracts, indicating that pH and environment associated with digestion alters the bioactivity of the extracted phenolics. Both leafy green vegetables had beneficial effects, but all Blackjack extracts were more effective in preventing the AAPH-mediated oxidation of Caco-2 cells, low-density lipoprotein and deoxyribonucleic acid than those of the spinach. This study identified the health benefits of eating Blackjack and therefore, the cultivation and consumption of this leafy green vegetable should be promoted.

INTRODUCTION: Bidens odorata Cav (Asteraceae) is a medicinal plant employed for the treatment of pain, anxiety, and depression. This study aimed to evaluate some neuropharmacological effects of an ethanol extract of B. odorata (BOE) and assess its antinociceptive interaction with naproxen and paracetamol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following neuropharmacological effects were evaluated with the ethanolic extract of B. odorata leaves (BOE) (10-200 mg/kg p.o.): the strychnine-induced-convulsion assay (anticonvulsant effect), rotarod test (locomotor activity), tail suspension test (anti-depressant-like activity), cylinder exploratory test (anxiolytic-like actions), and pentobarbital-induced sleep test (sedative effect). The interaction of the BOE-paracetamol and BOE-naproxen combinations were evaluated with the acetic acid-induced writhing test. The ED50 value of each drug was estimated and the combinations of paracetamol and naproxen with BOE were calculated. RESULTS: BOE (100-200 mg/kg) showed anti-convulsant activity by increasing the latency to occurrence of strychnine-induced convulsions, antidepressant-like effects by 28% and 33%, respectively, exerted anxiolytic actions (ED50 = 125 mg/kg), but did not affect motor locomotion. The pre-treatment with 2 mg/kg flumazenil or 20 mg/kg pentylenetetrazol partially reverted the anxiolytic activity shown by BOE alone. BOE (200 mg/kg) prolonged the duration of sleep with similar effect in comparison to clonazepam (1.5 mg/kg). The combinations of BOE-paracetamol (1:1) and BOE-naproxen (1:1) showed antinociceptive synergism. CONCLUSION: BOE induces sedative and anticonvulsant effects. The anxiolytic actions shown by BOE are probably induced by the participation of the GABAergic system. BOE exerts antinociceptive synergistic interaction with paracetamol and naproxen probably by the participation of nitric oxide and ATP-sensitive K+ channels, respectively.

Extracts from aerial parts of Prosopis ruscifolia, Bidens pilosa, Cercidium praecox and Phoradendron liga were assayed against toxigenic Aspergillus species. They were obtained by sequential extraction of the aerial parts with hexane (fHex), dichloromethane (fDCM), ethyl acetate (fEtOAc) and methanol (fMeOH). The fMeOH from P. ruscifolia showed the highest antifungal spectrum (MIC = 750-1500 µg mL-1; MID = 50-200 µg; DI = 1.7-3.0 mm). Indolizidine alkaloids (juliflorine and juliprosine) and tryptamine were identified with strong (MIC = 188 µg mL-1) and moderate antifungal activities (MIC = 750 µg mL-1), respectively, towards A. parasiticus and A. flavus. The fMeOH, the indolizidine alkaloids and tryptamine synergized the fungitoxic effect of potassium sorbate and propiconazole. They completely suppressed the biosynthesis of aflatoxins at concentrations of 47, 94 and 375 µg mL-1, respectively. Our results indicate that fMeOH and its identified alkaloids are promisory additives of commercial antifungals and are antiaflatoxigenic agents at concentrations below of those required for complete suppression of fungal growth.

Classical extraction methods used for an isolation of active substances from the plant material are expensive, complicated and often environmentally unfriendly. The ultrasonic assistance micelle-mediated extraction method (UAMME) seems to be an interesting alternative. The aim of this work was to compare an efficiency of water solutions of three non-ionic surfactants: C9-11 Pareth-5, PPG-6 Steareth-7 and PPG-4 Laureth-5 in UAMME of Bidens tripartita. Subsequently, the obtained extracts were separated into two immiscible phases, a polyphenols rich surfactants phase and an aqueous phase by its heating above surfactants cloud points (CPC) or by salting out with NaCl. Along with decreasing the Hydrophilic/Lipophilic Balance (HLB) factor value of surfactants, i.e. increase of the hydrophobicity, a significant decreasing of the flavonoid content was observed. While polyphenols content and antioxidant activity increased. The good surface properties of all surfactants correspond to the high content of phenolic compounds in extracts and both concentration methods resulted in even a 50-fold increase of polyphenols content. Dynamic light scattering measurements (DLS) provided that solubilization of polyphenols, i.e. their incorporation into surfactants' micelles, occurred with significant enlarging of particle size. Based on the molecular dynamic simulations, the mechanism of polyphenols incorporation into micelles was discussed.

Investigating whether the same hyperaccumulator shows a high accumulation potential for different species of the same heavy metal in the soil has rarely been considered until now. In this experiment, Cd accumulation by a hyperaccumulator Bidens pilosa L. from soils spiked with 3 and 9 mg Cd kg-1 in the form of Cd(NO3)2, CdCl2, CdBr2, CdI2, CdSO4, CdF2, Cd(OH)2, CdCO3, Cd3(PO4)2, and CdS and effect of soil amendment with EDTA were determined. The results showed that the Cd concentrations in B. pilosa for high-solubility species were basically higher. But the enrichment factors (EFs) (shoot to soil Cd concentration ratio) and translocation factors (TFs) (shoot to root Cd concentration ratio) of low-solubility Cd species were all greater than 1, either indicating that there was a high Cd hyperaccumulative potentials of B. pilosa without considering on Cd species in soil. EDTA significantly improved B. pilosa Cd hyperaccumulation, especially for low-solubility Cd forms in soils. These results can perfectly explain the accumulation properties of one hyperaccumulator to different species of the same heavy metal. Phytoremediation may be applied for a wide scope for different Cd species-contaminated soil. Moreover, the total amount of Cd in soil was important when assessing the risk of Cd-contaminated soils.

Avian coccidiosis is an economically important disease in the poultry industry. In view of the disadvantages of anti-coccidial drugs in chickens, edible plants and their compounds are re-emerging as an alternative strategy to combat this disease. A previous publication reported that the edible plant B. pilosa showed promise for use against coccidiosis. Here, we first investigated into the anti-coccidial effects of B. pilosa. We found that B. pilosa at 100 ppm or more significantly suppressed E. tenella as evidenced by reduction in mortality rate, oocyst excretion and gut pathological severity in chickens and its minimum prophylactic duration was 3 days. Next, we explored the mode of action of anti-coccidial mechanism of B. pilosa. The E. tenella oocysts were not directly killed by B. pilosa; however, administration of the plant suppressed oocyst sporulation, sporozoite invasion, and schizonts in the life cycle of E. tenella. Besides, B. pilosa boosted T cell-mediated immunity. Finally, we characterized the related anti-coccidial phytochemicals and their mode of action. One of three potent polyynes present in B. pilsoa, Compound 1 (cytopiloyne), acted against coccidiosis in chickens in a similar manner to B. pilosa. These data illustrate the anti-coccidial potency and mechanism of B. pilosa and one of its active compounds, and provide a cornerstone for development of novel herbal remedies for avian coccidiosis.
