This essay revisits the influence of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios (JAE), the effect inthe trajectory of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas of JAE grants and scholarshipspolicy for Spanish young graduates to study abroad. It proposes grantee’s travel as a source ofknowledge and its practices. It develops the argument that institutional memory, as that of ideas, isnot blurred by either a civil war or a dictatorship, repressive as it was. It also suggests genealogy ofscientific practices and training during the 20th century in Spain (AU)

The York Factory medical journals are the only surviving medical ledgers in the 200-year history of the Hudson's Bay Company, written by two physicians posted at one of the Company's largest and pre-eminent posts, York Factory. The daily journals offer us a unique glimpse, albeit for a seven-year span from 1846 to 1852, into the incidence and prevalence, duration, severity, treatment, outcomes, and seasonality of illness and disease. Occupations are noted, as are age and gender, in many of the entries. There are a total of 1,653 cases seen by the two physicians over the time period, 5 percent of which are Native. Several women were seen by the physicians, primarily for gynecological disorders. Gastro-intestinal disorders were a major source of morbidity at this time and place.

RESUMEN

Documentation of the early development of anaesthesia in Singapore is scanty. Before World War II the anaesthetic agents used were mainly chloroform, ether and ethyl-chloride. They were usually administered by the surgeons themselves or by apothecaries under the supervision of the operating surgeon. After World War II, anaesthetists were sent from the United Kingdom to be in charge of all anaesthetics administered in Singapore. From 1956 to 1971, local doctors were sent to the United Kingdom for training and to obtain the specialist degree FFARCS. From 1968 onwards, the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons held examinations in Singapore for candidates appearing for FFARACS. This continued until our M Med Anaesthesia examinations, which began in 1974, were well established. The number of specialists has increased over the years. With the decentralisation of the anaesthetic departments in the various hospitals in 1975, and the recent restructuring of Government hospitals, many changes have taken place in the anaesthetic scene. The long-awaited University Department of Anaesthesia was eventually established in 1985. Keeping pace with progress made in the various surgical disciplines, and in other fields of medicine, the duties of anaesthetists in institutional practice have increased enormously. They have extended beyond the operating theatre.
