Importance: Rohingya refugees, forcibly displaced from Myanmar, face challenges adapting to Bangladesh. Examining their quality of life (QOL) is vital to identifying nuanced factors associated with their well-being, informing targeted interventions for an improved QOL. Objectives: To identify the QOL among Rohingya refugees 5 years after migration to Bangladesh, with a particular emphasis on understanding the complex interplay between sociodemographic factors and chronic illnesses. Design, Setting, and Participants: A cross-sectional study involving resettled Rohingya adults was conducted between May 18 and July 7, 2021, approximately 5 years after their resettlement in Bangladesh. Of the participants, 500 individuals were healthy, whereas 558 individuals were undergoing treatment for at least 1 chronic disease. Data were analyzed from January to February 2024. Main Outcomes and Measures: The study assessed QOL using the short version of the World Health Organization's QOL Questionnaire, covering 4 domains: physical, psychological, social, and environmental. Scores were transformed to a maximum of 100. Tobit linear regression, adjusted for potential confounders, was employed for analysis. Results: The study included a total of 1058 respondents, who were predominantly female (630 participants [59.5%]) and had a mean (SD) age of 42.5 (16.1) years. Despite being healthy, individuals without chronic illnesses had median QOL scores ranging from 44 to 56 out of 100, indicating a relatively poor QOL. A total of 260 participants (46.6%) with chronic diseases reported very poor or poor QOL, in contrast to 58 healthy individuals (11.6%) in the fifth year after displacement. Specifically, patients with cancer and those who had multimorbidity exhibited the lowest QOL scores across all domains, with significant reductions in the physical health (10.57 decrease; 95% CI, -12.97 to -8.17) and psychological domain scores (7.20 decrease; 95% CI, -9.71 to -5.93) according to Tobit regression analysis. Conclusions and Relevance: This study found that chronic illnesses were associated with all domains of QOL among Rohingya refugees, particularly those with musculoskeletal disorders, cancer, and multimorbid conditions. This heightened vulnerability may contribute to poor QOL in this population. By uncovering these disparities, the study lays the groundwork for targeted interventions and policies aligned with the United Nations' goal of leaving no one behind in sustainable development efforts.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive details on Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Myanmar are lacking. This study determined the prevalence of HCV antibodies and ribonucleic acid (RNA) and the distribution of HCV genotypes across different populations in Myanmar from 1990 to 2023. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and local journals identified studies reporting on HCV antibodies, RNA, and genotypes, excluding clinical research related to liver disease prognosis. Screening and data extraction was done by two authors and study populations were categorized into low-risk, high-risk, liver disease patients, and refugees outside the country. The pooled prevalence was performed by Dersimonian and Laird method using the R program. The publication bias was shown by funnel plot, the Egger test was used to assess the symmetry of the plot, and the heterogeneity was examined by the Cochran Q test and I2 index. RESULTS: Out of 135 reports screened for eligibility, 35 reports comprising 51 studies were included in which 33 studies provided data on HCV seroprevalence in 685,403 individuals, 8 studies reported HCV RNA prevalence in 25,018 individuals, and 10 studies examined HCV genotypes in 1,845 individuals. The pooled seroprevalence of HCV among low-risk, high-risk, liver disease patients and refugees were 2.18%, 37.07%, 33.84%, and 2.52% respectively. HCV RNA-positive rates in these groups were 1.40%, 5.25%, 24.96%, and 0.84% respectively. Seroprevalence studies showed publication bias (Egger test, p = 0.0001), while RNA studies did not (Egger test, p = 0.8392). HCV genotype 3 was predominant in all sub-groups in Myanmar. CONCLUSION: Our study shows Myanmar has intermediate HCV endemicity with lowest HCV prevalence of 2.18% in low-risk groups and highest prevalence of 37.07% in high- risk groups. However, the findings highlight the need for further epidemiological studies to understand actual disease burden and implement effective countermeasures to achieve the WHO's goal of HCV elimination by 2030.

In Myanmar, where backyard, semi-intensive, and intensive pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) farming coexist, there is limited understanding of the zoonotic risks and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) associated with these farming practices. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, AMR and genomic features of Salmonella in pig farms in the Yangon region and the impact of farm intensification to provide evidence to support risk-based future management approaches. Twenty-three farms with different production scales were sampled for two periods with three sampling-visit each. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests and whole-genome sequencing were performed on the isolates. The prevalence of Salmonella was 44.5% in samples collected from backyard farms, followed by intensive (39.5%) and semi-intensive farms (19.5%). The prevalence of multi-drug resistant isolates from intensive farms (45/84, 53.6%) was higher than those from backyard (32/171, 18.7%) and semi-intensive farms (25/161, 15.5%). Among 28 different serovars identified, S. Weltevreden (40; 14.5%), S. Kentucky (38; 13.8%), S. Stanley (35, 12.7%), S. Typhimurium (22; 8.0%) and S. Brancaster (20; 7.3%) were the most prevalent serovars and accounted for 56.3% of the genome sequenced strains. The diversity of Salmonella serovars was highest in semi-intensive and backyard farms (21 and 19 different serovars, respectively). The high prevalence of globally emerging S. Kentucky ST198 was detected on backyard farms. The invasive-infection linked typhoid-toxin gene (cdtB) was found in the backyard farm isolated S. Typhimurium, relatively enriched in virulence and AMR genes, presented an important target for future surveillance. While intensification, in terms of semi-intensive versus backyard production, maybe a mitigator for zoonotic risk through a lower prevalence of Salmonella, intensive production appears to enhance AMR-associated risks. Therefore, it remains crucial to closely monitor the AMR and virulence potential of this pathogen at all scales of production. The results underscored the complex relationship between intensification of animal production and the prevalence, diversity and AMR of Salmonella from pig farms in Myanmar.

The beetle superfamily Elateroidea comprises the most biodiverse bioluminescent insects among terrestrial light-producing animals. Recent exceptional fossils from the Mesozoic era and phylogenomic studies have provided valuable insights into the origin and evolution of bioluminescence in elateroids. However, due to the fragmentary nature of the fossil record, the early evolution of bioluminescence in fireflies (Lampyridae), one of the most charismatic lineages of insects, remains elusive. Here, we report the discovery of the second Mesozoic bioluminescent firefly, Flammarionella hehaikuni Cai, Ballantyne & Kundrata gen. et sp. nov., from the Albian/Cenomanian of northern Myanmar (ca 99 Ma). Based on the available set of diagnostic characters, we interpret the specimen as a female of stem-group Luciolinae. The fossil possesses deeply impressed oval pits on the apices of antennomeres 3-11, representing specialized sensory organs likely involved in olfaction. The light organ near the abdominal apex of Flammarionella resembles that found in extant light-producing lucioline fireflies. The growing fossil record of lampyrids provides direct evidence that the stunning light displays of fireflies were already established by the late Mesozoic.

HIV-1 CRF08_BC is a significant subtype in China, though its origin and spread remain incompletely understood. Previous studies using partial genomic data have provided insights but lack comprehensive analysis. Here, we investigate the early evolutionary and spatiotemporal dynamics of HIV-1 CRF08_BC in China and Myanmar using near-complete genome sequences. We analyzed 28 near-complete HIV-1 CRF08_BC genomes from China and Myanmar (1997-2013). Phylogenetic, molecular clock, and Bayesian discrete trait analyses were performed to infer the virus's origin, spread, and associated risk groups. Based on Bayesian time-scaled inference with the best-fitting combination of models determined by marginal likelihood estimation (MLE), we inferred the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) and evolutionary rate of HIV-1 CRF08_BC to be at 3 October 1991 (95% HPD: 22 February1989-27 November 1993) and 2.30 × 10-3 substitutions per site per year (95% HPD: 1.96 × 10-3-2.63 × 10-3), respectively. Our analysis suggests that HIV-1 CRF08_BC originated in Yunnan Province, China, among injecting drug users, and subsequently spread to other regions. This study provides valuable insights into the early dynamics of HIV-1 CRF08_BC through combined genomic and epidemiological data, which may inform effective prevention and mitigation efforts. However, the limited genomic data influenced the extent of our findings, and challenges in collecting accurate risk group information during surveillance were evident.

Background: Since August 2017, around 940 000 forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (FDMN), mostly women and children, have fled persecution in Myanmar and arrived in the refugee camps across the border in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. This large-scale humanitarian crisis created an urgency for sexual and reproductive healthcare-related services among many of the sexually assaulted FDMN women and girls. Ipas, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) that has been working on expanding access to safe menstrual regulation, post-abortion care, and family planning services in Bangladesh since 2011, initiated an emergency humanitarian response programme in the refugee camps in Cox's Bazar in 2017 for the victim FDMN women and girls who were in desperate need of care. To understand the implementation process and the scope of sustainability and scale-up of Ipas's programme in the current humanitarian settings, icddr,b, a Bangladesh-based international health research institution, conducted an evaluation study. Methods: Due to the emergency crisis situation, Ipas could not collect baseline data while initiating its humanitarian response programme in 2017. Only a post-evaluation was carried out by icddr,b from August to December 2022 based on a desk review, health facility observation and assessment, qualitative interviews, and a stakeholder consultation workshop. Results: In collaboration with relevant stakeholders from the Government of Bangladesh and local and international NGOs, Ipas performed structural renovation and logistical arrangements to ensure facility readiness within the camps. Until December 2022, it provided comprehensive training on menstrual regulation, post-abortion care, and family planning services to around 700 service providers from partner organisations and expanded its activities from 8 to 51 service delivery points in 23 camps. Overall, 42 213 FDMN women received menstrual regulation and post-abortion care, while 339 334 received family planning services from these facilities, with a growing trend over time. Conclusions: Despite the challenges and barriers inherent to a humanitarian setting, Ipas's programme activities have achieved significant progress in providing menstrual regulation, post-abortion care, family planning services, and trauma/survival-centred care to the FDMN women and girls. A flexible approach, stakeholder coordination and commitment, cohesive methods for health systems strengthening, and community engagement were instrumental to the success of Ipas's humanitarian response programme.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals should prepare for emerging diseases and protect healthcare workers (HCWs) from work-related infection. This study aims to assess public hospital preparedness for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a year after the Myanmar government began implementing COVID-19 prevention measures, and to identify factors associated with work-related COVID-19 infection among HCWs in Myanmar. METHODS: In January 2021, data were collected from 101 hospitals and 706 HCWs who had COVID-19 in Myanmar in 2020. Data from the hospitals included basic information, the status of infection prevention and control (IPC), the preparedness for COVID-19 (guidelines, checklists, fever screening, patient pathway, and training), handwashing facilities, and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). Data of COVID-19 infected HCWs included age, occupation, workplace, severity and source of COVID-19 infection, knowledge and practice of handwashing, and working environment. Chi-square test was performed to compare the preparedness for COVID-19 among three hospital levels (primary, secondary and tertiary levels). Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associated factors of work-related infection of HCWs. RESULTS: The total number of beds, HCWs, and COVID-19 patients in 2020 at the 101 hospitals was 12,888, 14,421, and 19,835, respectively. The availability of PPE was high in hospitals at all levels. Approximately 80% of hospitals had functional status of IPC, set up fever screening and patient pathway, and provided training on IPC and COVID-19. However, only 39.6% of hospitals had developed COVID-19 guidelines and 55.4% had developed checklists. The percentage of hospitals that prepared each measurement was lowest at the primary level. The factors associated with work-related COVID-19 among HCWs were being 30-39 years old, working as a doctor, working at isolation wards, having disinfection technique training, and having enough PPE at the workplace. CONCLUSION: The preparedness for COVID-19 at public hospitals in Myanmar in January 2021 was insufficient, especially in the availability of the guidelines and checklists and at primary hospitals. A support system for hospital pandemic preparedness and monitoring of IPC implementation is needed. The government should prepare for emerging diseases and provide appropriate and adequate PPE and additional training to all HCWs, especially HCWs who work for isolation wards.

In this study, we describe the genetic characteristics of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 strains detected in Myanmar from 2015 to 2019. Whole genomes from 60 A(H1N1)pdm09 virus isolates were amplified using real-time polymerase chain reaction and successfully sequenced using the Illumina iSeq100 platforms. Eight individual phylogenetic trees were retrieved for each segment along with those of the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended Southern Hemisphere vaccine strains for the respective years. A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses from 2015 were found to belong to clade 6B, those from 2016 to 6B.1, 2017 to 6B.1A, and 2019 to 6B.1A.5a, and were genetically distinct from the Southern Hemisphere vaccine strains for the respective seasons, A/California/7/2009 and A/Michigan/45/2015. We observed one virus with intra-subtype reassortment, collected in the 2015 season. Importantly, three viruses possessed the H275Y substitution in the neuraminidase protein, appearing to be community-acquired without the prior administration of neuraminidase inhibitors. These viruses exhibited highly reduced susceptibility to oseltamivir and peramivir. This study demonstrates the importance of monitoring genetic variations in influenza viruses that will contribute to the selection of global influenza vaccines.

Three morning glory species in the genus Argyreia Lour., A. lycioides (Choisy) Traiperm & Rattanakrajang, A. mekongensis Gagnep & Courchet, and A. versicolor (Kerr) Staples & Traiperm, were found co-occurring and co-flowering. Argyreia mekongensis and A. versicolor are rare, while A. lycioides is near threatened and distributed throughout Myanmar and Thailand. We investigated key floral characters (floral morphology and phenology, as well as the micromorphology of the floral nectary disc and staminal trichomes) and screened for important chemical compounds hypothesized to contribute to pollinator attraction. Our findings demonstrate that some aspects of floral morphology (e.g., corolla size, limb presence, and floral color) of the three studied congeners exhibit significant differences. Moreover, pollinator composition appears to be influenced by floral shape and size; morning glory species with wider corolla tubes were pollinated by larger bees. The morphology of the floral nectary disc was similar in all species, while variation in staminal trichomes was observed across species. Glandular trichomes were found in all three species, while non-glandular trichomes were found only in A. versicolor. Histochemical results revealed different compounds in the floral nectary and staminal trichomes of each species, which may contribute to both floral attraction and defense. These findings demonstrate some segregation of floral visitors among sympatric co-flowering morning glory species, which appears to be influenced by the macro- and micromorphology of flowers and their chemical compounds. Moreover, understanding the floral morphology and chemical attractants of these sympatric co-flowering Argyreia species may help to maintain their common pollinators in order to conserve these rare and endangered species, especially A. versicolor.

Prosocial behavior is a distinguishing characteristic of human nature. Although prosocial behaviors emerge early in development, contextual factors play an important role in how these behaviors are manifested over development. A large body of research focuses on the trajectory of prosocial development across diverse cultures and investigating contexts that foster it. Against this backdrop of developmental research endeavoring to understand and enhance the cooperative side of humanity, is the catastrophic impact of profoundly negative forces on social-emotional development for children forced to flee from violent conflict. Close to half a million Rohingya children, whose families were forced to flee genocide in Myanmar, now live in the largest refugee camp in the world. To examine the resilience of human prosociality in the face of extreme adversity, we documented initial levels of prosociality in Rohingya refugee children living in a mega-camp (Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh) and the extent to which those levels were improved following a multifaceted intervention designed to foster prosociality. The research was a partnership between Rohingya community members with lived experience, humanitarian practitioners, and developmental researchers. A sample of 152 Rohingya children (5-12 years) participated in pre- and postintervention assessments of prosocial behaviors and related cognitive-affective processes. The 10-day collaboration-based intervention was implemented between November 2021 and January 2022 by Rohingya researchers. Birthplace was used as a proxy measure of trauma level. Children born in Myanmar (N = 88) directly experienced relatively higher levels of trauma (genocide, forced migration) than children who were born in the camp after their families fled from Myanmar (N = 64). Children were individually tested pre- and postintervention with a task battery, including a helping (Origami) and two sharing tasks (Dictator Game [DG], Forced Choice sharing) measuring prosocial behavior. Assessments of related cognitive-affective processes included measures of empathic responding and emotion perspective-taking in story tasks (Imagine, Judgment) and executive function (EF) skills (Younger: Hearts & Flowers; Older: Dimensional Change Card Sorting). Small group intervention sessions conducted over 10 days targeted these prosocial behaviors and cognitive-affective processes and were based on collaborative activities, emotion perspective taking and EF skills training with the same partner throughout the intervention phase. We used latent change modeling to examine initial levels (preintervention) and intervention-related changes in these measures from pre- to postintervention. Prosocial responding was found across all measures (preintervention) and improvements (pre- to postintervention change) were apparent across most measures. Age and birthplace variables were significant predictors of initial levels and intervention-related change. Initial levels: Regarding age, older children (9-12 years) showed higher levels than younger children (5-8 years) of sharing in the Forced Choice task but lower levels in the DG. Older children also showed higher levels of empathic responding when asked to report how they would feel and respond to another person's misfortune in the Imagine task. Regarding birthplace, prior to the intervention camp-born children showed higher levels than Myanmar-born children of helping in the Origami task and reported more behavioral responses indicating how they would respond to misfortune in the Imagine task. In contrast, Myanmar-born children had higher levels of sharing in the DG and consistently chose equality over inequality in the Forced Choice sharing task, even when their partner would receive more, indicating a pattern of generosity in these children. Myanmar-born children had lower levels than camp-born children on EF measures. Intervention-related change: Regarding age, older but not younger children were more likely to increase choices for equality over inequality on the Forced Choice sharing task following the intervention. Regarding birthplace and helping, camp-born children increased behaviors that helped their partner make origami shapes themselves ("how-to" helping), whereas Myanmar-born children increased behavior that took over folding for their partner ("do-for" helping). For sharing tasks, Myanmar-born but not camp-born children increased sharing in the DG and showed an increased pattern of generosity in Forced Choice sharing task. In the Imagine story task, children born in Myanmar were more likely than those born in camp to increase empathic responding (i.e., imagining how they would feel). Children born in Myanmar showed less improvement on EF measures than children born in the camp. Taken together, these findings provide evidence that in a context of extreme adversity, Rohingya children exhibited prosociality and benefitted from a multifaceted intervention. Our research adds credence to the view that human prosociality is a fundamental characteristic of humanity that not only survives but can be enhanced in even the most adverse of childhood environments. Our multifaceted intervention, which was implemented within a collaborative social context and targeted prosocial behaviors and related cognitive-affective processes, was designed to be easily implemented within existing psychosocial support programs in refugee contexts. As the numbers of children affected by violent conflict and forced migration rise alarmingly worldwide, there is a critical need to expand research partnerships that aim to improve developmental outcomes for these millions of children.

BACKGROUND: Typically mobile and vulnerable, migrants face significant barriers to access to routine malaria prevention, diagnostics and treatment, which leads to unchecked malaria transmission, particularly in border regions with a high population displacement. This study aimed to investigate the demographic and socioeconomic obstacles to access to malaria services among Myanmar migrants residing in the Thailand-Myanmar border areas. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in early 2024 across three districts near the Thailand-Myanmar border. Quantitative data were collected from Myanmar migrants using standardized questionnaires through structured surveys. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and simple and multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS: Out of 300 participants, approximately a quarter (27.3%) reported adequate access to comprehensive malaria services, including prevention, diagnostics, treatment and malaria-related health information. In multiple logistic regression models, factors associated with inadequate access included Myanmar migrants aged over 60 years (aOR: 7.63, 95% CI 1.74-20.58), accompanied by one to three family members (aOR: 3.33, 95% CI 1.06-8.45), earning monthly incomes below 3000 THB (aOR: 5.13, 95% CI 1.38-19.09) and 3000 to 6000 THB (aOR: 3.64, 95% CI 1.06-12.51), belonging to the Karen ethnicity (aOR: 2.13, 95% CI 1.02-3.84), with poor perception toward malaria (aOR: 2.03, 95% CI 1.03-4.01) and with poor preventive and health-seeking practices (aOR: 5.83, 95% CI 2.71-9.55). CONCLUSIONS: A significant proportion of Myanmar migrants encounter demographic and socioeconomic barriers to access to routine malaria services in Thailand. Tailored interventions are required to expand such access, including the recruitment of worksite health volunteers, strengthening the role of ethnic health organizations across the border and collaboration with private sector stakeholders (e.g. farm/company owners) to distribute preventive tools and ensure timely referral of suspected malaria cases to health facilities.

BACKGROUND: Although nutrition is an essential contributor to the quality of pregnancy outcomes, little is known about the experiences and influences affecting dietary behaviors during pregnancy among migrant women, particularly those from Myanmar, the largest immigrant population in Thailand. To fill this gap, we conducted a descriptive qualitative study to explore Myanmar immigrant women's perceptions, beliefs, and information-seeking behaviors concerning nutrition and food practices during pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) with fifty Myanmar immigrant pregnant women aged 18-45 years across all trimesters, who were recruited using purposive sampling from a public tertiary hospital. The FGDs were conducted in Thai or Myanmar using semi-structured guides that probed women's pregnancy perceptions and experiences about nutrition and food patterns during pregnancy. The FGDs were audio-recorded, translated, and transcribed. Direct content analysis was used to guide the analysis through an ecological perspective framework. RESULTS: The seven FGDs with fifty women revealed four major themes involving perceptions, beliefs, and information-seeking behaviors. The qualitative results consisted of (1) a positive attitude toward better changes under difficult conditions (setting goals for infant health; uncertainty about changes); (2) beliefs about eating patterns and dietary practices during pregnancy (taboos aimed at protecting women's health and ensuring safe childbirth; taboos aimed at guaranteeing infant safety); (3) limited access to appropriate information about nutrition (unclear dietary information from healthcare providers; ease of learning from experiences in informal social networks); and (4) difficult living conditions in a non-native setting (work-related influences on dietary behaviors; lack of comprehensible language to gain food literacy). In addition, the results were highlighted across four levels of ecological perspectives. CONCLUSIONS: Immigrant pregnant women are a vulnerable population that should be treated with equity to ensure quality of life through optimal nutrition throughout pregnancy. Respectful care requires that healthcare providers develop culturally sensitive nutrition interventions to increase nutrition literacy, accessibility, and pregnancy outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To understand and describe attitudes toward general health checkups, breast health knowledge, cultural beliefs, and health-promoting behaviors among Myanmar American immigrant women in the United States. SAMPLE & SETTING: 267 women participated in the study. 10 women were excluded because of missing data, so the total sample size was 257 participants. METHODS & VARIABLES: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey design was used to describe and investigate breast health perceptions and behaviors. RESULTS: Nearly 75% of the study sample reported having negative attitudes toward general health checkups and were found to have less accurate breast health knowledge and more fatalistic views about breast cancer. Only 29% of older women adhered to mammogram recommendations. Younger women reported more barriers to mammograms, and older women reported fewer barriers to mammograms. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: This study demonstrated the need for additional research focusing on unique perspectives when investigating breast health practices among Myanmar American immigrant women. The findings highlight the essential need to build a strong partnership with stakeholders to combat breast health disparities and address the complex nature of acculturation.

Myanmar aims to eliminate malaria by 2030. However, recent increase of malaria incidence is a great challenge to archive that goal. Increasing prevalence of Plasmodium vivax also hinders this endeavor. Monitoring genetic structure of the parasite is necessary to understand genetic nature and evolutionary aspect of P. vivax population in Myanmar. Partial fragment flanking blocks I and II of merozoite surface protein-3 alpha of P. vivax (pvmsp-3α) was amplified from P. vivax isolates collected in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay Region, Myanmar in 2013-2015. Sequence analysis of pvmsp-3α was performed to determine genetic diversity and natural selection of this gene. Spatio-temporal genetic changes of pvmsp-3α in Myanmar P. vivax population were also investigated via comparative analysis of gene sequences obtained in this study and previously reported Myanmar pvmsp-3α sequences. Genetic diversity of Myanmar pvmsp-3α was detected in P. vivax isolates analyzed. Size polymorphisms in block I and amino acid changes and recombination events in block II were main factors contributing to the genetic diversity of pvmsp-3α. Comparative spatio-temporal analysis with previously reported Myanmar pvmsp-3α populations revealed the presence of genetic differences by population with moderate genetic differentiation between populations. Similar pattern of natural selection was also detected in Myanmar pvmsp-3α populations. These suggested that enough size of the P. vivax population sufficient to generate or maintain the genetic diversity remains in the population. Thus, continuous molecular surveillance of genetic structure of Myanmar P. vivax is necessary.

Background: Despite established vaccination programs, vaccine-preventable diseases persist among about 900,000 Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN)/Rohingya refugees in the world's largest refugee settlement in Bangladesh. Health service providers (HSPs) play a key role in the delivery of childhood vaccination programs. This study explored their views on individual and context barriers and drivers to childhood vaccination in this setting. Methods: Informed by the theoretical framework of the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model for behavior change, this qualitative study collected data through eight focus group discussions (FGDs) with community health workers (CHWs) and vaccinators in selected camps with high or low vaccination coverage rates, and through 11 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with key informants working in strategic, management, and administrative roles. Findings: Barriers and drivers were evident across all COM factors for HSPs and caregivers. Among HSPs, knowledge around vaccination acted both as a barrier and driver, while communication skills and confidence in vaccination served as drivers. Caregivers' lack of awareness of vaccination, concerns and mistrust were described as main barriers. Context barriers included information system deficiencies, family dynamics, HSPs' working conditions, and vaccination site accessibility. Context drivers included effective communication, mobilization, and incentives. Differences between high and low coverage camps in Cox's Bazar included variations in HSPs' knowledge, communication strategies, incentive use, and stakeholder collaboration. Discussion: For better vaccination coverage in the camps, context-related changes regarding collaboration, health workforce and the use of incentives seem necessary. Caregivers' mistrust toward vaccination needs to be considered under the social and historical background of the Rohingya community, and further addressed with targeted communication and campaigning.

Burmese amber preserves a diverse assemblage of Cretaceous arachnids, and among pseudoscorpions (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones), ten species in five families have already been named. Here, we describe a new fossil species from Burmese amber in the pseudoscorpion family Hyidae, providing detailed measurements, photographs and 3D-models from synchrotron scanning. Based on morphology, the new fossil, Hya fynni sp. nov. is placed in the genus Hya, and is nearly identical to extant species in the genus, except for the position of trichobothrium est on the pedipalpal chela, thereby indicating extreme morphological stasis in this invertebrate lineage over the last 99 million years. Hya fynni represents the first described fossil species in Hyidae, and the third described Burmese fossil in the superfamily Neobisioidea. It also joins the garypinid, Amblyolpium burmiticum, in representing the oldest fossil records for extant pseudoscorpion genera. Considering proposed divergence dates, the newly described fossil species bolsters a Gondwanan origin for Hyidae, and provides evidence for the "Late Jurassic Rifting" hypothesis for the Burma Terrane, in which this landmass rifted from Gondwana in the Late Jurassic and collided with Eurasia by the Cretaceous/Eocene. Like Hya species today, H. fynni likely inhabited humicolous microhabitats in tropical forests on the Burma Terrane, supporting ecological niche stasis for this family since the Mesozoic.

Although enacted and internalized stigma is a continuing problem for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Southeast Asia, there is little understanding of how PLWH cope with discrimination, exclusion, and other negative outcomes caused by HIV-related stigmatization. This article aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the lived experiences of HIV-related stigmatization and coping strategies among 30 people with HIV in Myanmar, a country heavily influenced by religion, especially Buddhism. Among the 30 study participants, 20 were female and 10 were male, with ages ranging from 18 to 50 years. Through the lens of Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field, and capital, this article first elucidates the various forms of stigmatization in family, work, social, and other settings as symbolic violence on people with HIV. The present article shows that spirituality serves as a perceptual and action framework for people with HIV to generate reflexivity toward their HIV infection and related stigmatization and to further engage in agentic responses. More importantly, this article demonstrates how people with HIV draw on spirituality to support peers in reclaiming control over their lives and how they are perceived by society. The findings indicate that the local context, especially cultural and religious resources, should be considered when developing interventions to mitigate HIV-related stigmatization in Southeast Asia.

An improved understanding of the Plasmodium vivax populations in the Great Mekong Subregion (GMS) is needed to monitor the progress of malaria elimination. This study aimed to use a P. vivax single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) barcode to evaluate the population dynamics and explore the gene flow among P. vivax parasite populations in the western GMS (China, Myanmar and Thailand). A total of 315 P. vivax patient samples collected in 2011 and 2018 from four regions of the western GMS were genotyped for 42 SNPs using the high-throughput MassARRAY SNP genotyping technology. Population genetic analysis was conducted to estimate the genetic diversity, effective population size, and population structure among the P. vivax populations. Overall, 291 samples were successfully genotyped at 39 SNPs. A significant difference was observed in the proportion of polyclonal infections among the five P. vivax populations (P = 0.0012, Pearson Chi-square test, χ2 = 18.1), with western Myanmar having the highest proportion (96.2%, 50/52) in 2018. Likewise, the average complexity of infection was also highest in western Myanmar (1.31) and lowest in northeast Myanmar (1.01) in 2018. The older samples from western China in 2011 had the highest pairwise nucleotide diversity (π, 0.388 ± 0.046), expected heterozygosity (He, 0.363 ± 0.02), and the largest effective population size. In comparison, in the neighboring northeast Myanmar, the more recent samples in 2018 showed the lowest values (π, 0.224 ± 0.036; He, 0.220 ± 0.026). Furthermore, the 2018 northeast Myanmar parasites showed high and moderate genetic differentiation from other populations with FST values of 0.162-0.252, whereas genetic differentiation among other populations was relatively low (FST ≤ 0.059). Principal component analysis, phylogeny, and STRUCTURE analysis showed that the P. vivax population in northeast Myanmar in 2018 substantially diverged from other populations. Although the 42 SNP barcode is a valuable tool for tracking parasite origins of worldwide parasite populations, a more extended barcode with additional SNPs is needed to distinguish the more related parasite populations in the western GMS.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the determinants of prenatal breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy among Burmese migrant pregnant mothers in Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand. DESIGN: The data were collected as part of a baseline survey of a randomised controlled trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 198 Burmese migrant mothers between 28th and 34th weeks of gestation were recruited from the antenatal care clinic of Samut Sakhon Hospital. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy RESULTS: The prevalence of good breastfeeding knowledge was 65.7% (n=130), positive attitudes towards breast feeding were 55.1% (n=109) and high breastfeeding self-efficacy was 70.7% (n=140). Multivariate logistic regression models revealed that mothers aged above 25 years (adjusted OR, AOR 3.1, 95% CI 1.2 to 7.9), being Bamar (AOR 2.3, 95% CI 1.2 to 4.4), having support from husband (AOR 2.3, 95% CI 1.2 to 4.6) and having previous childbirth experience (AOR 2.5, 95% CI 1.3 to 4.8) were the main determinants of good breastfeeding knowledge. Similarly, being Bamar (AOR 2.8, 95% CI 1.5 to 5.3), having high school education (AOR 4.3, 95% CI 1.8 to 10.1) and having access to workplace breastfeeding support (AOR 5.3, 95% CI 1.4 to 20.1) were found to be significant predictors of positive attitudes towards breast feeding. Moreover, mothers aged above 25 years (AOR 2.9, 95% CI 1.1 to 7.8), being Bamar (AOR 2.4, 95% CI 1.2 to 5.1), being unemployed (AOR 7.8, 95% CI 1.9 to 31.9), having support of husband (AOR 3.2, 95% CI 1.5 to 7.0), having previous breastfeeding experience for 6 months or more (AOR 5.0, 95% CI 2.1 to 11.7) and having intention to exclusively breastfeed (AOR 2.7, 95% CI 1.3 to 5.8) had significant associations with high breastfeeding self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: The prenatal breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy among Burmese migrant mothers were influenced by many factors. A comprehensive understanding of these factors will enable policy-makers and healthcare providers to develop context-specific interventions for the promotion of exclusive breast feeding among Burmese migrant mothers in Thailand.
