RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE), which refers to the phenomena associated with the attainment of enhanced performance in sport-specific tasks after a conditioning activity, is an important objective of warming-up practices in many sports. This is even more relevant for sprinters, as potential increases in sprinting speed will directly influence their competitive results. This systematic review with meta-analysis evaluated the effects of different PAPE protocols (ie, using plyometrics, strength-power exercises, and resisted/assisted sprints) on the sprinting performance (ie, sprint time or sprint speed) of competitive sprinters. METHODS: Initially, 1205 records published until last December 18 were identified, using the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Clarivate Web of Science. After removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, 14 high-quality studies met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. RESULTS: Overall, there were no significant changes in sprint performance after implementing various types of conditioning activities (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.16 [95% CI, -0.02 to 0.33]; Z = 1.78; P = .08; I2 = 0%). In addition, when comparing prechanges and postchanges between experimental, control, and other conditions, no significant differences were found in sprint speed or time across all studies (SMD = 0.09 [95% CI, -0.10 to 0.28]; Z = 0.92; P = .36; I = 0%). CONCLUSIONS: Results revealed that different types of conditioning activities may not be capable of acutely enhancing the sprint speed of competitive sprinters. This aligns with previous observations indicating that sprinting is a highly stable physical capacity, a phenomenon that is even more consistent among elite sprinters. Coaches and sport scientists should collaborate to develop more efficient PAPE protocols for these highly specialized athletes, with special attention to study design and individualization, while considering their effects on acceleration versus top speed.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the recovery responses to the Total Quality Recovery (TQR), Well-Being questionnaire (WBQ), and Heart Rate (HR) responses to Submaximal Running Test (SRT), and the influence of salivary testosterone concentration (TEST) on these responses in 25 elite youth (U15) male basketball players. TQR, WBQ, and HR measurements were assessed after 48 hours of rest (T1), 24 hours after the 1st day of training (T2) and 24 hours after the 2nd day of training (T3). Salivary sampling was conducted at T1 and T3. A significant decrease was observed for TQR (F = 4.06; p = 0.01) and for WBQ (F = 5.37; p = 0.008) from T1 to T3. No difference among the three-time points was observed for HR and HR Recovery, and the TEST concentration did not influence the results. These results show that TQR and WBQ are sensitive to acute transient alterations in training loads (TL) and may be utilized to monitor recovery in elite youth basketball players. The HR related measurements presented limited responsiveness, and the TEST seems not to influence the recovery of these players who are competing at highest performance level.

Introduction: Older adults (OA) represent a growing population group that is especially susceptible to a loss of physical fitness associated with functional impairment. Traditional resistance training (TRT) has proven to be effective, improving or limiting the loss of muscle mass and frailty. Functional training (FT) has emerged as an affordable alternative to prevent physical changes caused by aging. However, there is little evidence regarding the effectiveness of functional training, versus traditional resistance training, on physical capacity in older adults. Purpose: To systematically review the effectiveness of FT, compared to TRT, on improving physical fitness in OA. Methodology: Pubmed, SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), SCOPUS, PEDro, and Web of Science databases were consulted. In addition, search strategies were performed, including the terms "resistance training," "aged," "physical fitness," and "functional training." Results: Five articles meeting inclusion criteria were identified. From the qualitative analysis conducted, it was observed that both FT and TRT training are effective in improving various manifestations of strength. In addition, compared to TRT, FT presents a higher proportion of effectiveness on functional fitness elements such as cardiorespiratory capacity (3.3 times), agility (2.7 times), and functional lower body strength (1.7 to 2.8 times). Conclusion: Both FT and TRT can be valid alternatives to improve general physical fitness in OA. Likewise, EF is more effective on parameters related to functionality in OA.

RESUMEN

Jiménez-Díaz, J., Chaves-Castro, K. y Carpio-Rivera, E. (2023).

Jiménez-Díaz, J., Chaves-Castro, K. y Carpio-Rivera, E. (2023). Relationship between process- and product-oriented assessments of actual motor performance: a meta-analysis. PENSAR EN MOVIMIENTO: Revista de Ciencias del Ejercicio y la Salud, 21(1), 1-17. Motor performance is often assessed in two different ways. The first of them focuses on how the skill is carried out, whereas the second records the product obtained after execution. While both are widely used, the relationship between them is not clear. The objective of the present study is to determine the relationship between the results of process- or product-oriented tests that are used to measure actual motor performance, and to examine possible moderating variables through the meta-analytic technique. In order to sum up the products, the random effect model (REML) was used and the effect size (TE) of the correlation was calculated. A total seven studies met the criteria for eligibility, and a total 37 TE were obtained. It was found that a significant and positive relationship exists between process- and product-evaluated performance (TE = 0.466; IC95% = 0.391, 0.541; p < .001; n = 37; Q = 78.68; p < .001; I2 = 60.17%). Age and skill type were analyzed as possible moderating variables. The results suggest that a relationship exists between process- and product-oriented assessments of actual motor performance, while age and the type of skill have no influence on that relationship.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Ferreira, ABdM, Ribeiro, BLL, Batista, EdS, Dantas, MP, and Mortatti, AL. The influence of different training load magnitudes on sleep pattern, perceived recovery, and stress tolerance in young soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 351-357, 2023-The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of 3 weeks on sleep parameters, perceived recovery, and stress tolerance in young soccer players using different training load magnitudes. A total of 13 young male soccer athletes (15.9 ± 0.5 years; 68.7 ± 6.1 kg; 170 ± 7 cm) who performed 3 typical training weeks with different workloads were analyzed. The external training load (ETL) was verified by the PlayerLoad method, and the internal training load (ITL) was determined using the session rating of perceived exertion method. Sleep was monitored using a wrist-actigraphy monitor. Sleep variables, including total time in bed (TTB), total sleep time (TST), sleep latency (SL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE), were evaluated across all nights of sleep. The recovery status was assessed with the perceived recovery status (PRS) scale, and the stress tolerance was monitored using the "daily analysis of life demands of athletes" questionnaire. There was an increase in sleep time during the week with the highest training load (week 2) (TTB: +35 minutes, TST: +46 minutes, SL: -5 minutes, SE: +3%). There was no difference in the PRS or in the stress tolerance during the evaluation weeks. A very large within-individual correlation was observed between ITL and ETL ( r = 0.78) and moderate within-individual correlation between ETL and TST ( r = 0.34), between ITL and TST ( r = 0.45), and between ITL and SE ( r = 0.359). These results showed that there was an increase in TST during a microcycle with intensified loads, without impairing bedtime and resulting in maintenance of the perceived recovery or stress tolerance values.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Introduction: Athletes' physical conditioning is closely related to the type of sport dedicated, training levels, intrinsic conditions of the athletes, type of load, and recovery status after exercise training. There is ample documentation on the physical conditioning of volleyball athletes in normal situations, but the literature is lacking in surveys during competition periods. Objective: To explore the physical conditioning through analysis of body biomarkers in volleyball athletes in competition. Methods: Before and after the summer training, fasting urine and blood samples were collected from five female volleyball players. Biomarkers involving white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, etc., were detected, recorded, and the data were statistically analyzed. After the general analysis of the sample, a case study of two elite female athletes was conducted. Results: The urea nitrogen value of athlete A decreased from 7.62mmol/L to 4.91mmol/L, and the urea nitrogen value of athlete B decreased from 6.91mmol/L to 6.57mmol/L; the urea nitrogen values of both athletes showed a downward trend. Athlete A's physical function status decreased significantly after summer training, while Athlete B's physical function status improved slightly. Conclusion: During the summer training period, it is necessary to perform continuous index measurements on the athletes to increase the timeliness of the data, which is conducive to in-depth analysis of the athletes' fitness status. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.

Abstract Background Obesity and overweight in childhood can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease throughout live. Objectives This study provides an update of a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCT) published in 2014, to assess the effects of physical activity interventions on preventing cardiovascular risk factors in childhood. Methods This update combines data from the previous search with new data obtained from June 2013 to June 2020. Searches were performed on PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane CENTRAL. The RCTs enrolled used interventions with physical activity longer than six months in school children aged 6-12 years, and evaluated body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Data analysis was performed using a random-effects model and a P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 28,603 articles were retrieved, and 17 RCTs (11,952 subjects) were included. Physical activity interventions were associated with reduction in SBP [−2.11mmHg (95%CI −3.67, −0.54), I243%], DBP [−2.08mmHg (95%CI −3.68, −0,49), I265%] and TG [-0.08mmol/L (95% CI -0.13, -0.03), I20%], and increase in TC [0.17mmol/L (95%CI 0.04, 0.30), I20%]. However, the interventions were not associated with reductions in BMI [−0.03 kg/m2 (95%CI −0.17, 0.10), I20%]. Conclusion This update confirms and reinforces the beneficial effects of physical activity intervention in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure and TG levels.

RESUMEN

Abstract The regular practice of physical exercise as a non-pharmacological treatment of arterial hypertension (AH) has been encouraged due to causing a series of physiological responses in the cardiovascular system, such as the production of vasoactive substances, including nitric oxide (NO). NO is a relaxation factor released by the endothelium, and the decrease in its bioavailability is related to coronary and arterial diseases, such as AH. This study aimed to perform an integrative literature review to elucidate the effect of physical training on NO levels in patients with AH and to establish a relationship between these levels and blood pressure (BP) control. A literature review was was performed by searching PubMed / MEDLINE, Lilacs, Scielo, Cinahl and Embase databases. The search string used was ("arterial hypertension" OR hypertension) AND (exercise OR "physical exercise" OR "aerobic exercise" OR "exercise training" or "physical activity") AND ("nitric oxide"). We included fully available controlled and uncontrolled clinical trials published in English and Portuguese languages in the last 10 years. The review consisted of 16 articles, of which 13 reported an increase in NO production after the physical training intervention, and three studies found no change. In addition, 15 studies observed a reduction in BP after the intervention. In conclusion, regular practice of physical exercises, advocating moderate intensity, can improve NO bioavailability in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive individuals, which seems to be one of the mechanisms responsible for BP reduction.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to verify the effects of congested fixture and matches' participation on internal and external workload indexes in professional Brazilian soccer players. Rate of perceived exertion-based training load (sRPE), distance- and accelerometry-based measures were daily monitored over 119 training sessions and 33 matches performed by 29 male outfield players. Weeks were classified as congested (n = 11, two or more matches within a 7-day period) and regular (n = 10, one match or less within a 7-day period). The players were divided based on the matches' participation: (1) players who played ≥ 60 min (G1); (2) players who played < 60 min (G2); (3) players who did not participate of the match (G3). The findings showed that independent of the levels of participation during the matches, regular weeks presented greater acute, monotony, and strain indices for internal and external workload measures than congested weeks. The G1 presented the highest values for most of the workload indices in both regular and congested weeks, except for monotony indices (internal and external load) that G2 showed greater values than G1 and G3. Coaches and practitioners should plan the training "doses" to reduce disparities of these different match's participation and congested schedule weeks.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in addition to visuomotor training (VMT) on choice reaction time (CRT) and cognitive function in amateur soccer players. DESIGN: Single-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group study. SETTING: Neuroscience and Motor Control Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty Brazilian male amateur soccer players, aged 18-30 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants were allocated to the intervention or control groups. Both groups performed VMT, but the intervention group additionally underwent anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC; F3). The cathodal electrode was positioned in the right supraorbital region (Fp2). The tDCS was applied at 2 mA for 20 min for five consecutive sessions (24 h intervals). The VMT protocol was delivered during the application of tDCS and was composed of kicking a ball for 10 min (between the fifth and fifteenth minutes of the 20 min of tDCS application). The primary outcome was assessed based on changes in CRT during reaching (non-trained limb) and kicking (trained limb) tasks. Secondary outcomes were overall cognitive function measured by the Trail Making Test part A (TMT-A) and part B (TMT-B), and Digit Span Test forward (DSF) and backward (DSB) scores. All outcomes were evaluated before and after the intervention. RESULTS: In the primary outcomes, compared with the control group, the anodal tDCS combined with VMT group had greater reduction in CRT for the rectus femoris (p = 0.007) adjusted for age and baseline performance (F (1,26) = 22,23; p < 0,001) and for the triceps (p = 0.039) adjusted for training frequency (days/week) and baseline performance (F (1,26) = 5,70; p = 0,016). No differences were observed in the CRT of other muscles (anterior deltoid [p = 0.181], brachial biceps [p = 0.130], and vastus medialis [p = 0.074]). And, there were no differences between the groups in terms of cognitive function (TMT-A [p = 0.062]; TMT-B [p = 0.320]; DSF [p = 0.102]; DSB [p = 0.345]). CONCLUSION: Anodal tDCS over the left DLPFC in addition to visuomotor training of a functional task can be an efficient tool for athletes to decrease the CRT of the rectus femoris (trained limb) and triceps (non-trained limb); however, there were no differences between the groups in the others muscles (anterior deltoid, brachial biceps, and vastus medialis), and in terms of cognitive function.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Due to the quarantine caused by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), professional team-sports adapted their training routine to maintain the athletes' performance and minimize the negative emotional effects. The aim of the present study was to describe a home-based training program and extra-activities applied during the quarantine in elite professional female basketball players, and to compare the internal training load (ITL), session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE), motivation, and wellbeing responses before and during the quarantine. METHODS: Nine female elite players (25.7±7.0 years; 180.0±8.0 cm; 79.0±11.0 kg) belonging to a professional basketball team performed a home-based training program during the quarantine. ITL, s-RPE, training motivation, and wellbeing were examined before (phase 1), at the beginning (phase 2), and during (phase 3) the quarantine. RESULTS: ITL was higher (main effect) in phase 1 (449.5±62.8 a.u.) compared to phase 2 (265.5±39.0 a.u.) and phase 3 (423.1±18.7 a.u.); s-RPE was higher in phase 1 (4.50±0.63 a.u.) compared to phase 2 (3.8±0.6 a.u.), but not to phase 3 (4.37±0.79 a.u.). Motivation was higher in phase 1 (3.6±0.3 a.u.) compared to phase 2 (2.3±0.6 a.u.) and phase 3 (2.4±0.5 a.u.). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study demonstrated that extra-activities involving online athletes' socialization were implemented to rouse the motivation, but the quarantine period induced a reduction in ITL and influenced the player's training motivation.

RESUMEN

Abstract Campos Campos, K.I., Castelli Correia de Campos, L.F., Pereira Morato, M., Fernández Muñoz, M., Tosim, A., Alarcón Segura, K. & Luarte Rocha, C. (2021). Effectiveness of goalball athletes throwing in the Chilean National League. PENSAR EN MOVIMIENTO: Revista de Ciencias del Ejercicio y la Salud, 19(2), 1-16. Goalball is a collective Paralympic sport with oppositional characteristics but without invasion by the athletes that, despite requiring great physical condition in offensive and defensive actions, is also identified as a tactical sport, where the administration of technique in the various game situations determines success in competition. The objective of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of the attack of the Chilean National Goalball League, according to type of shot and trajectory. Four Goalball matches of the final phase of a national tournament were filmed. For this, a digital camera was used behind an arch located in height. The matches were analyzed following the diagrams proposed by Morato et al. (2016) and Morato (2012). The front throw (FRO) was used the most (88.9%) with an effectiveness rate of 6.2%. Longer trajectories were made in short diagonals (SD) and parallel (PA) (31.3% and 23.2%, respectively). The FRO throw was directed in SD (34.5%) and PA (22.4%), while on the other hand, the spinning throws (SP) were directed preferably in PA (30.4%) and SD (29.1%). The FRO throw was more effective in PA (10.6%), whereas the SP throw was more effective in the middle diagonal (MD) (12.5%). The lateral positions execute throws, preferably FRO, but in defense the central positions are protagonists. Throws are most effective when they are directed in PA and SD.

(AU)

A characteristic of Gymnastics For All (GFA) is its demonstrative character, which materializes in the creation and, consequently, presentation of choreographies. Based on the importance of choreographic process in GFA, we decided to systematize the procedures to compose the choreography entitled "Moqueca Batucada". It was developed by LABGIN Gymnastics Group, which consists of an extension project held at the Center for Physical Education and Sports (CEFD) of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). As a methodology, we opted for documentary research approach. We highlight as outcome of this experience report that GFA allows the establishment of a space for experimentation and socialization of knowledge that promotes and enhances the development of choreographies that have not only corporal meaning, but that encompass historical, cultural, and social aspects.

: The aim of this study was verify the performance of the running and swimming of civilian lifeguards after a summer season in Florianópolis - SC. Fourteen civilian lifeguards (age: 23.4 ± 5.0 years; body mass: 74.6 ± 8.9 kg; height: 176 ± 0.1 cm) performed tests of 500m swimming and 1600m running before and after a summer season of 5 months. There was no intervention in the routine of the lifeguards during this period. Statistical analysis consisted of a paired t-test (two-tailed) for the pre and post-season comparison, with the correlations between the variables being verified by Pearson's correlation coefficient, with level of significance of 5% (p < 0.05) for all tests. There was an impairment in the 500m swimming test (Pre: 501.4 ± 77.9; Post: 523.1 ± 84.6 s; p <0.01) and 1600m running test (Pre: 371.6 ± 42.3 s; Post: 393.9 ± 42.7 s; p <0.01), without association between the pre-season performance time and the swimming (r = 0.441, p = 0.115) or running (r= -0.179, p = 0.541) impairment magnitudes. It was concluded that running and swimming performance are impaired at the end of the summer season on civilian lifeguards, which could cause a loss of performance in routine activities. Thus, become important strategies, such as systematic training, to minimize this fall in the performance of civilian lifeguards, avoiding the risk to themselves and potential victims. (AU)
