BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines could reduce disease burden and costs in older Canadian adults, but vaccination program cost-effectiveness is unknown. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of different age cut-offs for RSV adult vaccination programs, with or without a focus on people with higher disease risk due to chronic medical conditions. METHODS: We developed a static individual-based model of medically attended RSV disease to compare alternative age-, medical risk-, and age-plus medical risk-based vaccination policies. The model followed a multiage population of 100 000 people aged 50 years and older. Vaccine characteristics were based on RSV vaccines authorized in Canada as of May 2024, with vaccine protection assumed to last 2 years (or 3 years in scenario analyses). We calculated sequential incremental cost-effectiveness ratios in 2023 Canadian dollars per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) from the health-system and societal perspectives, discounted at 1.5%. RESULTS: Although all vaccination strategies averted medically attended RSV disease, universal age-based strategies were not an efficient use of resources compared with medical risk-based strategies. Vaccinating adults aged 70 years and older with 1 or more chronic medical condition was the optimal strategy for a cost-effectiveness threshold of $50 000 per QALY. Results were sensitive to assumptions about vaccine price, but medical risk-based approaches remained optimal compared with age-based strategies, even when vaccine prices were low. Findings were robust to a range of alternative assumptions. INTERPRETATION: Vaccination programs for RSV in some groups of older Canadians with underlying medical conditions are likely cost-effective. These findings can inform the design of vaccination programs.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes substantial morbidity and mortality in older adults. In May 2023, two subunit RSV vaccines (Arexvy [GSK] and Abrysvo [Pfizer]) received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In June 2023, ACIP recommended that adults aged ≥60 years may receive a single dose of RSV vaccine, using shared clinical decision-making. In support of development of this policy, our objective was to assess the cost-effectiveness of RSV vaccination in the general population in this age group. We used a decision-analytical model of RSV over a two-year timeframe using data from published literature, FDA documents, epidemiological databases, and manufacturer data. We tracked RSV-associated outpatient, emergency department, inpatient healthcare utilization, RSV-attributable deaths, quality-adjusted life-years lost (QALYs), and societal costs. The societal cost per QALY saved from RSV vaccination depended on age group and product: adults aged ≥60 years, $196,842 for GSK's vaccine and $176,557 for Pfizer's vaccine; adults ≥65 years, $162,138 for GSK and $146,543 for Pfizer; adults 60- <65 years, $385,829 for GSK and $331,486 for Pfizer. Vaccine efficacy, incidence of RSV hospitalization, and vaccine cost had the greatest influence on cost per QALY. Cost per QALY saved decreased as the age of those vaccinated increased. Inputs such as long-term efficacy are uncertain. RSV vaccination in adults aged ≥60 years may be cost-effective, particularly in those of more advanced age. Lower vaccine acquisition costs and persistent efficacy beyond two RSV seasons would render RSV vaccination more cost-effective for a broader target population. BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the main causes of hospitalization for lower respiratory tract infection in children under five years of age globally. Maternal vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for RSV prevention among infants are approved for use in high income countries. However, data are limited on the economic burden of RSV disease from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) to inform decision making on prioritization and introduction of such interventions. This study aimed to estimate household and health system costs associated with childhood RSV in Kenya. METHODS: A structured questionnaire was administered to caregivers of children aged < 5 years admitted to referral hospitals in Kilifi (coastal Kenya) and Siaya (western Kenya) with symptoms of acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) during the 2019-2021 RSV seasons. These children had been enrolled in ongoing in-patient surveillance for respiratory viruses. Household expenditures on direct and indirect medical costs were collected 10 days prior to, during, and two weeks post hospitalization. Aggregated health system costs were acquired from the hospital administration and were included to calculate the cost per episode of hospitalized RSV illness. RESULTS: We enrolled a total of 241 and 184 participants from Kilifi and Siaya hospitals, respectively. Out of these, 79 (32.9%) in Kilifi and 21(11.4%) in Siaya, tested positive for RSV infection. The total (health system and household) mean costs per episode of severe RSV illness was USD 329 (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 251-408 ) in Kilifi and USD 527 (95% CI: 405- 649) in Siaya. Household costs were USD 67 (95% CI: 54-80) and USD 172 (95% CI: 131- 214) in Kilifi and Siaya, respectively. Mean direct medical costs to the household during hospitalization were USD 11 (95% CI: 10-12) and USD 67 (95% CI: 51-83) among Kilifi and Siaya participants, respectively. Observed costs were lower in Kilifi due to differences in healthcare administration. CONCLUSIONS: RSV-associated disease among young children leads to a substantial economic burden to both families and the health system in Kenya. This burden may differ between Counties in Kenya and similar multi-site studies are advised to support cost-effectiveness analyses.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is associated with substantial morbidity among infants. This study modelled the potential public health and economic impact of nirsevimab, a long-acting monoclonal antibody, as an immunoprophylactic strategy for all infants in Spain in their first RSV season. METHODS: A static decision-analytic model of the Spanish birth cohort during its first RSV season was developed to estimate the impact of nirsevimab on RSV-related health events and costs versus the standard of practice (SoP). Spain-specific costs and epidemiological data were used as model inputs. Modelled outcomes included RSV-related outpatient visits, emerging room (ER) visits, hospitalisations - including pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, and inpatient mortality. RESULTS: Under the current SoP, RSV caused 151,741 primary care visits, 38,798 ER visits, 12,889 hospitalisations, 1,412 PICU admissions, and 16 deaths over a single season, representing a cost of €71.8 million from a healthcare payer perspective. Universal immunisation of all infants with nirsevimab was expected to prevent 97,157 primary care visits (64.0% reduction), 24,789 ER visits (63.9%), 8,185 hospitalisations (63.5%), 869 PICU admissions (61.5%), and 9 inpatient deaths (52.6%), saving €47.8 million (62.4%) in healthcare costs. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that immunisation with nirsevimab of all infants experiencing their first RSV season in Spain is likely to prevent thousands of RSV-related health events and save considerable costs versus the current SoP.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in infants and young children worldwide. Using routine statutory health insurance claims data including patients from all regions of Germany, we investigated the health-care resource use and costs associated with RSV prophylaxis with palivizumab in Germany. In the database, infants from the birth cohorts 2015-2019 eligible for palivizumab immunization were identified using codes of the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Health-care resource use and costs related to immunization were determined by inpatient and outpatient administrations. Over the study period, only 1.3% of infants received at least one dose of palivizumab in their first year of life. The mean number of doses per immunized infant was 4.6. From a third-party payer perspective, the mean costs of palivizumab per infant who received at least one dose in the first year of life was €5,435 in the birth cohorts 2015-2019. Despite the substantial risk of severe RSV infection, we found low rates of palivizumab utilization. Novel preventive interventions, featuring broader indications and single-dose administration per season, contribute to mitigating the burden of RSV disease across a more extensive infant population.

AIMS: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in infants and adults. While the clinical burden was recently estimated in adults in Germany, little is known about the economic burden. To fill this gap, this study aimed to assess hospital and outpatient healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and costs of RSV infections in adults in Germany. METHODS: In this retrospective, observational study on nationwide, representative, anonymized claims data (2015-2018), we identified patients ≥18 years with ICD-10-GM-codes specific to RSV ("RSV-specific"). To increase sensitivity, patients with unspecified LRTIs (including unspecified bronchitis, bronchiolitis, bronchopneumonia, and pneumonia) during RSV seasons were also included as cases potentially caused by RSV ("RSV-possible"). RSV-related HRU (hospital days, ICU and ventilation treatment, drug dispensation) and direct costs were estimated per episode. Excess costs per episode and for follow-up periods were compared to a matched control cohort. All outcomes were reported per healthcare sector and stratified by age and risk groups as well as disease severity (ICU admission/ventilation). RESULTS: Direct inpatient and outpatient mean episode costs were 3,473€ and 82€, respectively, with substantially higher costs for severe cases requiring intensive care and/or ventilation (10,801€). Direct costs for RSV-specific cases were higher than for RSV-possible cases (inpatients: 6,247€ vs. 3,450€; outpatients: 127€ vs. 82€). Moreover, costs were significantly higher for RSV patients than for controls and increased over time (inpatients: 5,140€ per episode vs 10,093€ per year; outpatients: 46€ per quarter vs 114€ per year). LIMITATIONS: While the number of RSV-specific cases was low, inclusion of seasonal LRTI cases likely increased the sensitivity to detect RSV cases and allowed a better estimation of the total costs of RSV. CONCLUSIONS: The economic burden of RSV-LRTI in adults in Germany is substantial, persists long-term, and is particularly high in the elderly. This highlights the need for cost-effective prevention measures.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute lower respiratory infection and hospitalizations among infants, young children, and the elderly. This systematic literature review aimed to summarize the epidemiological and economic burden estimates of RSV infection at any age in Germany. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search to identify full-text articles published from 2003 to 2023 and reporting data on the epidemiological or economic burden of RSV in Germany. Based on pre-specified eligibility criteria, data on incidence, rates of hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admission, clinical manifestation, underlying conditions, seasonality, health care resource use and costs were extracted. RESULTS: After screening 315 full-text articles, we included 42 articles in the review. The characteristics of the included studies were heterogenous regarding study population, setting, age groups and RSV-related outcome measures. The most frequently reported epidemiological outcome measures were RSV detection rate (n = 33), followed by clinical manifestation (n = 19), seasonality (n = 18), and underlying conditions of RSV infection (n = 13). RSV detection rates were reported across heterogenous study populations, ranging from 5.2 to 55.4% in pediatric inpatient cases and from 2.9 to 14% in adult inpatient cases. All articles that reported RSV detection rates across several age groups demonstrated the highest burden in infants and young children. Few articles reported RSV-related outcome measures distinctively for the outpatient setting. Health care resource use, such as hospital length of stay, ICU admission rate and treatment of patients with RSV infection were described in 23 articles, of which only one study quantified associated costs from 1999 to 2003 for children ≤ 3 years. In-hospital ICU admission rates varied between 3.6 and 45%, depending on population characteristics as age and underlying conditions. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review revealed that RSV imposes substantial disease burden in infants, young children, and the elderly in Germany, whereby infants are particularly affected. To date, there has been limited exploration of the impact of RSV infection on healthy children or the elderly in Germany. Given their notably high reported burden in studies, the medical and economic RSV burden in these groups should move more into focus.

BACKGROUND: New interventions are available for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease in young infants. We aimed to assess the potential impact and cost-effectiveness of using a long-acting monoclonal antibody (RSV mAb) or maternal RSV vaccine in the Argentine context. METHODS: We used a static proportionate outcomes model to calculate the costs and consequences of using RSV mAb or maternal RSV vaccine over a ten-year period (2025-2034) in Argentina, assuming both year-round and seasonal administration. We compared each intervention to no pharmaceutical RSV intervention. The primary outcome was the discounted cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted from a societal perspective. We assumed willingness-to-pay of US$ 12,285 per DALY averted (0.9 times the national gross domestic product per capita). We used population study data on costs and disease burden and the efficacy of clinical trials of both interventions as inputs. We ran deterministic and probabilistic uncertainty analyses. FINDINGS: Either strategy (RSV mAb or maternal RSV vaccine) could prevent >25% of RSV deaths aged <5 years and âˆ¼30% aged <6 months (the age group where most intervention impact occurs). With a dose price of $US 50, both products have a 100% probability of being cost-effective compared to no intervention (US$ 5283 [95%CI $5203-$5363] and US$ 5522 [95%CI $5427 - $5617] per DALY averted for year-round use of RSV mAb and maternal RSV vaccine, respectively). Similar health impact could be achieved by a six-month seasonal strategy, which could improve cost-effectiveness by around 45% (assuming the dose price is unchanged). INTERPRETATION: Either RSV mAb or maternal RSV vaccine are worth consideration in Argentina when priced at ≤US$ 50 per dose. A seasonal strategy could improve cost-effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: The cost of medically attended RSV LRI (lower respiratory infection) is critical in determining the economic value of new RSV immunoprophylaxes. However, most studies have focused on intermittent RSV encounters, not the episode of care that captures the entirety of RSV illness. METHODS: We created age- and condition-specific cohorts of children under 5 years of age using MarketScan® data (2015-2019). We contrasted aggregating healthcare costs over RSV-LRTI episodes to ascertaining costs based on RSV-specific encounters only. Economic burden was estimated by multiplying costs per encounter or per episode by their respective incidence rates. RESULTS: Average cost was higher per episode than per encounter regardless of settings (inpatient: $28,586 vs. $18,056 and outpatient/ED: $2099 vs. $407 for infants). Across ages, the economic burden was highest for infants and RSV-LRTI requiring inpatient care, but the burden in outpatient/ED settings was disproportionately higher than costs due to higher incidence rates (for inpatient vs. outpatient episodes: $226,403 vs. $101,269; for inpatient vs. outpatient encounters: $151,878 vs. $38,819 per 1000 infant-years). For high-risk children, cost and burden were up to 3-10 times higher, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: With a comprehensive stratification by settings and risk condition, the encounter- versus episode-based estimates provide a robust range for policymakers' economic appraisal of new RSV immunoprophylaxes.

BACKGROUND: Health Canada recently authorized the RSVpreF pregnancy vaccine and nirsevimab to protect infants against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease. OBJECTIVE: Assess the cost-effectiveness of RSVpreF and nirsevimab programs in preventing RSV disease in infants, compared to a palivizumab program. METHODS: We used a static cohort model of a Canadian birth cohort during their first RSV season to estimate sequential incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) in 2023 Canadian dollars per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) for nine strategies implemented over a one-year time period, from the health system and societal perspectives. Sensitivity and scenario analyses were conducted to explore the impact of uncertainties on the results. RESULTS: All-infants nirsevimab programs averted more RSV-related outcomes than year-round RSVpreF programs, with the most RSV cases averted in a seasonal nirsevimab program with catch-up. Assuming list prices for these immunizing agents, all-infants nirsevimab and year-round RSVpreF programs were never cost-effective, with ICERs far exceeding commonly used cost-effectiveness thresholds. Seasonal nirsevimab with catch-up for infants born outside the RSV season was a cost-effective program if prioritized for infants at moderate/high-risk (ICER <$28,000 per QALY) or those living in settings with higher RSV burden and healthcare costs, such as remote communities where transport would be complex (ICER of $5700 per QALY). Using a $50,000 per QALY threshold, an all-infants nirsevimab program could be optimal if nirsevimab is priced at <$110-190 per dose. A year-round RSVpreF for all pregnant women and pregnant people plus nirsevimab for infants at high-risk was optimal if nirsevimab is priced at >$110-190 per dose and RSVpreF priced at <$60-125 per dose. INTERPRETATION: Prophylactic interventions can substantially reduce RSV disease in infants, and more focused nirsevimab programs are the most cost-effective option at current product prices.

This Systematic Review assesses the economic impact of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in relation to healthcare resource utilization and associated costs. We searched online databases from January 2012 to November 2022 to identify eligible publications. We identified 12 publications that reported direct costs, indirect costs, and resources associated with RSV and its complications. The primary direct medical resources reported were medical services, diagnostics tests and procedures, and length of stay (LOS). Direct total costs per patient ranged widely from $563 to $19,076. Direct costs are, on average, 98% higher than indirect costs. Brazil reported a higher total cost per patient than Colombia, El Salvador, México, Panamá, and Puerto Rico, while for indirect costs per patient, El Salvador and Panamá had higher costs than Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. The mean LOS in the general ward due to RSV was 6.9 days (range 4 to 20 days) and the mean Intensive Care Unit LOS was 9.1 days (range 4 to 16 days). In many countries of the LAC region, RSV represents a considerable economic burden on health systems, but significant evidence gaps were identified in the region. More rigorous health economic studies are essential to better understand this burden and to promote effective healthcare through an informed decision-making process. Vaccination against RSV plays a critical role in mitigating this burden and should be a priority in public health strategies.

Morbidity and mortality caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in older adults and those with underlying health conditions can be potentially alleviated through vaccination. To assist vaccine policy decision-makers and payers, we estimated the annual economic burden of RSV-associated cardiorespiratory hospitalizations among insured US adults aged ≥18 y in the Merative MarketScan claims database from September through August of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the number of RSV-associated cardiorespiratory hospitalizations using MarketScan-identified cardiorespiratory diagnosis codes in the presence or absence of RSV circulation per weekly laboratory test positivity percentages from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This number was multiplied by mean cardiorespiratory hospitalization costs to estimate total costs for RSV-associated cardiorespiratory hospitalizations. Number and cost for International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-coded RSV hospitalizations were quantified from MarketScan. In 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, respectively, 18,515,878 and 16,462,120 adults with commercial or Medicare supplemental benefits were assessed. In 2017-2018, 301,248 cardiorespiratory hospitalizations were observed; 0.32% had RSV-specific ICD codes, costing $44,916,324, and 5.52% were RSV-associated cardiorespiratory hospitalizations, costing $734,078,602 (95% CI: $460,826,580-$1,103,358,799). In 2018-2019, 215,525 cardiorespiratory hospitalizations were observed; 0.34% had RSV-specific ICD codes, costing $33,053,105, and 3.14% were RSV-associated cardiorespiratory hospitalizations, costing $287,549,472 (95% CI: $173,377,778-$421,884,259). RSV contributes to substantial economic burden of cardiorespiratory hospitalizations among US adults. Modeling excess risk using viral positivity data provides a comprehensive estimation of RSV hospitalization burden and associated costs, compared with relying on ICD diagnosis codes alone.

The burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection among older adults in Taiwan is not well understood due to a scarcity of published epidemiological data. Nonetheless, the increasing proportion of older adults is anticipated to translate to increased burden of RSV infection, presenting a challenge to the healthcare system. Thus, an expert meeting was convened among a panel of infectious disease specialists from Taiwan to evaluate the existing local evidence and data gaps related to RSV infection in older adults (aged ≥50 years), and propose steps to generating evidence on disease burden among this population. Overall, there are few studies on the clinical and economic burden of RSV infection in Taiwan, and existing data are limited by small sample sizes and highly selected populations. Inconsistent RSV testing practices among older adults contribute to under-diagnosis and under-reporting, driven by limitations to reimbursement policies that discourage proactive RSV testing in older adults, and the lack of appropriate, targeted RSV treatment. Crucially, the paucity of epidemiological data may perpetuate a lack of awareness of RSV among clinicians and the public, hinder investments into RSV testing at a policymaker level, and thereby impede implementation of consistent diagnostic practices, precluding a deeper understanding of RSV. To overcome these challenges, it is imperative to prioritize generation of epidemiological data to establish the burden of RSV infection among older adults in Taiwan. Such data would also support a multi-stakeholder group in assessing the impact of future RSV-related interventions, such as educational initiatives and preventative strategies including vaccines.

OBJECTIVE: To assess medical costs of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) care associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease in children enrolled in the New Vaccine Surveillance Network. STUDY DESIGN: We used accounting and prospective surveillance data from 6 pediatric health systems to assess direct medical costs from laboratory-confirmed RSV-associated hospitalizations (n = 2007) and ED visits (n = 1267) from 2016 through 2019 among children aged <5 years. We grouped costs into categories relevant to clinical care and administrative billing practices. We examined RSV-associated medical costs by care setting using descriptive and bivariate analyses. We assessed associations between known RSV risk factors and hospitalization costs and length of stay using χ2 tests of association. RESULTS: The median cost was $7100 (IQR $4006-$13 355) per hospitalized child and $503 (IQR $387-$930) per ED visit. Eighty percent (n = 2628) of our final sample were children aged younger than 2 years. Fewer weeks' gestational age was associated with greater median costs in hospitalized children (P < .001, ≥37 weeks of gestational age: $6840 [$3905-$12 450]; 29-36 weeks of gestational age: $7721 [$4362-$15 274]; <29 weeks of gestational age: $9131 [$4518-$19 924]). Infants born full term accounted for 70% of the total expenditures in our sample. Almost three quarters of the health care dollars spent originated in children younger than 12 months of age, the primary age group targeted by recommended RSV prophylactics. CONCLUSIONS: Reducing the cost burden for RSV-associated medical care in young children will require prevention of RSV in all young children, not just high-risk infants. Newly available maternal vaccine and immunoprophylaxis products could substantially reduce RSV-associated medical costs.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus infection is the leading cause of lower respiratory infection globally. Recently, nirsevimab has been approved to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. This study explores the economically justifiable price of nirsevimab for preventing RSV infection in Colombia's children under 1 year of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A static model was developed using the decision tree microsimulation to estimate the quality-adjusted costs and life years of two interventions: a single intramuscular dose of nirsevimab versus not applying nirsevimab. This analysis was made during a time horizon of 1 year and from a societal perspective. RESULTS: The annual savings in Colombia associated with this cost per dose ranged from U$ 2.5 to 4.1 million. Based on thresholds of U$ 4828, U$ 5128, and U$ 19 992 per QALY evaluated in this study, we established economically justifiable drug acquisition prices of U$ 21.88, U$ 25.04, and U$ 44.02 per dose of nirsevimab. CONCLUSION: the economically justifiable cost for nirsevimab in Colombia is between U$ 21 to U$ 44 per dose, depending on the willingness to pay used to decide its implementation. This result should encourage more studies in the region that optimize decision-making processes when incorporating this drug into the health plans of each country.

OBJECTIVES: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a frequent cause of acute lower respiratory infection in children, imposing a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems. This systematic review aimed to assess the economic burden and healthcare utilisation of RSV in children aged 0-59 months in Italy. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the International HTA Database, including studies published in English or Italian, was conducted between January 2000 and July 2022. Inclusion criteria required studies to be conducted in Italy and provide data on the economic costs and healthcare resource utilisation related to RSV infections. RESULTS: Out of 20,845 records screened, 18 articles met the inclusion criteria. Only one study provided comprehensive data on RSV disease costs, including hospitalisation, diagnostic tests, and medical procedures for infants with RSV-bronchiolitis. The mean cost per inpatient was higher for RSV-positive children (€5753.43 ± €2041.62) than that for RSV-negative children. Additionally, five studies reported a median length of hospital stay of 5 days for RSV-infected children, and four studies indicated a higher frequency of intensive care unit admissions for RSV-infected children than for those with other viral infections. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first systematic review to examine the economic burden and healthcare utilisation of RSV in children aged 0-59 months in Italy. While limited data were available, the findings underscore the urgency to conduct further research and gather additional evidence on the costs and healthcare resource utilisation associated with RSV infections. Such efforts are essential for informing the development of effective prevention strategies for paediatric RSV infections in Italy.

A study of 2 health care claims databases (commercial, Medicaid) was undertaken to estimate the episodic cost of lower respiratory tract illness due to respiratory syncytial virus among infants aged <12 months overall, by age, and by birth gestational age. Among commercial-insured infants, mean costs were $28 812 for hospitalized episodes, $2575 for emergency department episodes, and $336 for outpatient clinic episodes. Costs were highest among infants aged <1 month and infants with a gestational age ≤32 weeks and were comparable among Medicaid-insured infants, albeit somewhat lower. The cost of lower respiratory tract illness due to respiratory syncytial virus during the acute phase of illness is high, especially among the youngest infants and those born premature.
