The authors describe the events that led to the birth, in 1872, of the SCA, which celebrated 150 years of existence. Its founders, its objectives and the main milestones throughout that time are indicated. The analysis emphasizes that during the first half of that period only one president was a doctor: the others were engineers, physicists, chemists, soldiers, lawyers, and naturalistic researchers. On the other hand, during the second half, 8 doctors, from different specialties, held the presidency, all with an outstanding professional performance, both nationally and internationally, and who contributed a special characteristic to the institution, typical of this profession. RESUMEN

Argentina Biomedical Science has been historically strong. The development of Human and Veterinary Pharmacology in our country as a pivotal discipline has been acknowledged worldwide because of the quality of its contributions. Argentinean Society of Experimental Pharmacology (SAFE) is a non- profit association whose research fields include Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology. SAFE main goals are described as follow (a) To meet active researchers for studying concerns regarding Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (b) To launch an initiative for development of the discipline in mainly our country and other collaborative countries worldwide (c) To spread the pharmacological know-how obtained from different research teams (d) To strengthen relations between pharmacologists (e) To facilitate the presentation and discussion of scientific papers. This current article shows the SAFE's more important scientific contribution to pharmacology through its former research scientists to the present.

RESUMEN

Pharmacology in Chile has about 75 years of history and from its beginning until today has grown exponentially. Today, pharmacology is taught in the biomedical careers of the main Chilean universities and research centers in pharmacology are in the north, central and south of Chile. This editorial offers an overview of the main milestones that have led to the consolidation of Chilean pharmacology in Latin America and the world.

RESUMEN

Here we discuss the building of statistical knowledge, mainly in developing countries. We highlight some words from Past IBS Presidents and IBS actions that show the role of IBS in education with an emphasis on developing countries. Some examples show that international exchanges are a well-known way of improving the quality of teaching, learning and research and stress the point that individual initiatives are very important (and fruitful) for education, but we should encourage some more general actions.

RESUMEN

At the beginning the investigation on infectious diseases was plenty of adventures in exotic countries. The efforts of the English investigators, headed by Patrick Manson, gave birth to the "tropical" medicine and "tropical" diseases, like the sleeping sickness, which was sweeping the country north to the Victoria Lake in 1901. The Royal Society of London sent two Commissions in search of the etiological agent. Aldo Castellani was decisive for the failure of the first - Low, Castellani, Christy,1902 - because even he saw Trypanosoma in samples of some patients, he did not appreciate his discovery; and decisive also for the success of the second -Bruce, Nabarro, Greig, 1903 - when he and Bruce recognized this Trypanosoma as the etiological agent. Following these expeditions, Low developed a brilliant career in England, Christy a life of investigation mixed up with adventures through Asia and Africa and Castellani a long life of lights and shadows in many lands.
