Bioremediation of surfactants in water bodies holds significant ecological importance as they are contaminants of emerging concern posing substantial threats to the aquatic environment. Microbes exhibiting special ability in terms of bioremediation of contaminants have always been reported to thrive in extraordinary environmental conditions that can be extreme in terms of temperature, lack of nutrients, and salinity. Therefore, in the present investigation, a total of 46 bacterial isolates were isolated from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean and screened for degradation of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Further, two Gram-positive psychrotolerant bacterial strains, ASOI-01 and ASOI-02 were identified with significant SDS degradation potential. These isolates were further studied for growth optimization under different environmental conditions. The strains were characterized as Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Bacillus pumilus based on morphological, biochemical, and molecular (16S RNA gene) characteristics. The study reports 88.9% and 93.4% degradation of SDS at a concentration of 100 mgL-1, at 20 °C, and pH 7 by S. saprophyticus ASOI-01 and B. pumilus ASOI-02, respectively. The experiments were also conducted in wastewater samples where a slight reduction in degradation efficiency was observed with strains ASOI-01 and ASOI-02 exhibiting 76.83 and 64.93% degradation of SDS respectively. This study infers that these bacteria can be used for the bioremediation of anionic surfactants from water bodies and establishes the potential of extremophilic microbes for the utilization of sustainable wastewater management.

Meat products represent an important component of the human diet and are a good source of nutrients. Food-borne microorganisms are the main pathogens that cause human diseases as a result of food consumption, especially products of animal origin. The objective of the present research was to verify the antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Thymus vulgaris against strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolated from meat products. For this, the analyses of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were performed in microdilution plates. The association of the product with antimicrobials was also studied using disk diffusion. And the anti-adherent activity, which was determined in the presence of sucrose, in glass tubes. Thyme oil showed a strong inhibitory activity against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, with the MIC values ranging from 64 to 512 µg/mL, and bactericidal effect for most strains, with MBC values ranging from 256 to 1,024 µg/mL. T. vulgaris oil exhibited varied interactions in association with the antimicrobials, with synergistic (41.67%), indifferent (50%) and antagonistic (8.33%) effects. Regarding the anti-adherent activity, the test product was effective in inhibiting the adherence of all bacterial strains under study. Therefore, thyme oil presents itself as an antibacterial and anti-adherent agent against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, being a natural product that can represent an interesting alternative in the efforts to combat foodborne diseases.

Os produtos cárneos representam um importante componente da dieta humana e constituem uma boa fonte de nutrientes. Microrganismos de origem alimentar são os principais patógenos que causam doenças humanas como resultado do consumo de alimentos, principalmente, produtos de origem animal. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi verificar a atividade antibacteriana do óleo essencial de Thymus vulgaris frente às cepas de Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Staphylococcus saprophyticus isoladas de produtos cárneos. Para isso, foram realizadas as análises de Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e a Concentração Bactericida Mínima (CBM) em placas de microdiluição. Assim como, o estudo de associação do produto com antimicrobianos, realizado por difusão em disco. E a atividade antiaderente, que foi determinada na presença de sacarose, em tubos de vidro. O óleo de tomilho apresentou uma forte atividade inibitória contra K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa e S. saprophyticus, com os valores de CIM variando entre 64 a 512 µg/mL, e efeito bactericida para a maioria das cepas, com valores de CBM entre 256 a 1.024 µg/mL. O óleo de T. vulgaris exibiu interações variadas na associação com os antimicrobianos, com efeitos sinérgicos (41,67%), indiferente (50%) e antagonista (8,33%). Em relação a atividade antiaderente, o produto teste foi eficaz na inibição a aderência de todas cepas bacterianas em estudo. Portanto, o óleo de tomilho apresenta-se como agente antibacteriano e antiaderente frente a K. pneumoniae, a P. aeruginosa e a S. saprophyticus, sendo um produto natural que pode representar uma alternativa interessante nos esforços para combater doenças transmitidas por alimentos.

La resistencia de antibióticos puede llegar a causar una amplia morbilidad y complicaciones. Objetivo: Determinar el perfil de resistencia antimicrobiana de Escherichia Coli y de Staphylococcus Saprophyticus, en pacientes con infección urinaria hospitalizados en el servicio de Medicina Interna del Hospital Municipal Los Olivos. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo de corte transversal. Se realizó en el servicio de Medicina Interna del Hospital Municipal los Olivos (HMLO). Participantes: historia clínica de pacientes hospitalizados con infección urinaria en el servicio de Medicina Interna. Intervenciones: Según los criterios de inclusión y exclusión se obtuvieron, 96 historias clínicas (HC) del año 2013. Se utilizó un instrumento de recolección validado. Se realizó el análisis descriptivo con software estadístico STATA versión 25. Resultados: De las 96 HC, la edad promedio fue 55,04 años, los agentes microbianos más frecuentes fueron: la Escherichia coli con 85,3%, Staphylococcus saprophyticus 4.2% y Klebsiella pneumoniae 3,1%. La prevalencia de productores de betalactamasa espectro extendido (BLEE) fue 10,4%. Los antibióticos más resistentes fueron: trimetoprim/sulfametoxazol 89,6%, ampicilina 86%, piperacilina 84,6%, tetraciclina 79,2% y ciprofloxacino 70,8%. Los antibióticos más sensibles fueron: amikacina 100%, imipenem 100%, ertapenem 98%, meropenem 96% y piperacilina/tazobactam 96%. Conclusión: El uropatógeno más frecuente en pacientes con ITU hospitalizados fue la E. coli. Los antibióticos que presentaron resistencia a la E. coli fueron: trimetoprim/sulfametoxazol, ampicilina, piperacilina, tetraciclina y ciprofloxacino, y para el S. Saprophyticus fueron: amoxicilina/ ácido clavulánico, trimetoprim/sulfametoxazol, ceftriaxona y ciprofloxacino(AU)


Resistance to antibiotics may actually cause extensive morbidity and complications. Objective: To determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus, in patients with urinary infection hospitalized in the Internal Medicine service of the Los Olivos Municipal Hospital. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional study. It was carried out in the Internal Medicine service of the Los Olivos Municipal Hospital (HMLO). Participants: clinical history of hospitalized patients with urinary infection in the Internal Medicine service. Interventions: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 96 clinical records (HC) from 2013 were obtained. A validated collection instrument was used. Descriptive analysis was performed with STATA version 25 statistical software. Results: Of the 96 CHs, the average age was 55.04 years, the most frequent microbial agents were: Escherichia Coli with 85.3%, Staphylococcus saprophyticus 4.2% and Klebsiella pneumoniae 3.1%. The prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase producers (ESBL) was 10.4%. The most resistant antibiotics were trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole 89.6 %, ampicillin 86 %, piperacillin 84.6 %, tetracycline 79.2 % and ciprofloxacin 70.8 %. The most sensitive antibiotics were: amikacin 100%, imipenem 100%, ertapenem 98%, meropenem 96% and piperacillin / tazobactam 96%. Conclusion: The most common uropathogen in hospitalized UTI patients was E. coli. The antibiotics that showed resistance to E. coli were: trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, ampicillin, piperacillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin, and for S. saprophyticus they were: amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin(AU)

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) may be considered contaminants when isolated from clinical specimens but may also be a cause of true infection. This study aimed to compare the clonality and SCCmec type of a collection of CoNS isolated from blood cultures of inpatients, nasal swabs of healthy individuals, and patients with chronic wounds, all from the same community, using SCCmec typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and MLST. Staphylococcus epidermidis, exhibited high clonal diversity, but hospital and community clusters were observed. Nosocomial S. epidermidis clones belonged to sequence types ST2, ST6, and ST23. Some Staphylococcus haemolyticus clones were found to circulate in the hospital and community, while Staphylococcus saprophyticus exhibited very high clonal diversity. Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Staphylococcus warneri, and Staphylococcus capitis revealed several isolates belonging to the same clone in the hospital and community. The detection of different SCCmec types within the same cluster indicated high diversity. S. epidermidis was associated with SCCmec I and III, S. haemolyticus with I and II, S. capitis with type V, Staphylococcus hominis with mec complex type A and ccr1, and S. warneri and S. saprophyticus with SCCmec I. The generation of elements and new combinations of cassette genes were highly associated with CoNS isolates, suggesting that SCCmec may not be a good marker of clonality in these bacteria.

The present context was designed to investigate the efficacy of devil fish (DF; Plecostomus sp.) silage and Staphylococcus saprophyticus on fermentation characteristics as well as greenhouse gases production mitigation attributes in horses. Four levels of ensiled DF at 0 (control DF0), 6 (DF6), 12 (DF12), and 18 (DF18) % were added into the diet. Moreover, three doses of S. saprophyticus (0, 1, and 3 mL/g dry matter [DM]) were used for in vitro fecal fermentation. The use of ensiled DF resulted in increased (P < .0001) pH during fermentation. The asymptotic gas production was the highest (P < .0001) in DF6, whereas other supplementation caused lower production than that of control. Lag time for the asymptotic gas production decreased (P < .05) with increasing dietary DF doses. Inclusion of S. saprophyticus resulted in the lowest (P < .05) gas production and mL/0.5 g DM incubated and thus, the reduced gas production up to 23.17% than that of control. The interaction of DF × S. saprophyticus showed the lowest gas production at DF18, whereas the highest production was estimated at DF6 without S. saprophyticus after 48 hours. The lowest emission of CO2 (P < .0001) was observed in DF18 inclusion, which was 15.25% lower than that of control at 48 hours of fermentation. In contrast, the lowest hydrogen (H2) production was estimated in DF0, whereas DF18 exhibited the highest. Inclusion of DF12 and DF18 reduced (P < .05) methane (CH4) emission by 58.24% and 59.33%, respectively. However, DF, S. saprophyticus, and DF × S. saprophyticus interaction had no significant effect (P > .05) on CH4 production. In conclusion, ensiled DF and S. saprophyticus could be supplemented in equine diet as promising alternatives to corn for mitigating the emission of greenhouse gases effectively.

Distintos autores difieren en la mayor o menor prevalencia de las infecciones urinarias (IU) por Streptococcus agalactiae y Staphylococcus saprophyticus en mujeres embarazadas (ME) y no embarazadas (NE). Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo, comparativo, de cohortes con el objetivo de evaluar la frecuencia de IU por S. agalactiae y S. saprophyticus en ME asintomáticas pertenecientes a centros de atención primaria de la salud del Municipio de La Plata (CAPS) entre 2008 y 2016 y se la comparó con la de NE sintomáticas en edad fértil, no internadas, que asistieron al Hospital "San Roque" (HSR) entre 2014 y 2017. Se procesaron 2.378 orinas de ME que concurrieron a las CAPS. De ese total, 201 fueron positivas (8,5%), el 10,4% de las mismas (n: 21) correspondieron a S. agalactiae y el 10,0% a S. saprophyticus (n: 20). En el 54% se aisló Escherichia coli. El total de urocultivos en la población de NE fue de 2.281 y 526 fueron positivos (23,1%): 7 correspondieron a S. agalactiae (1,3%), 18 a S. saprophyticus (3,4%) y el 78% a E. coli. En conclusión, la frecuencia de aislamiento de S. agalactiae y S. saprophyticus fue significativamente mayor en la población de ME pertenecientes a las CAPS respecto de las NE estudiadas en el HSR.


Several authors differ in the greater or lesser prevalence of urinary tract infections (UTI) due to Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus saprophyticus in pregnant women (PW) and non-pregnant women (NPW). A retrospective, comparative, cohort study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the frequency of UTI by S. agalactiae and S. saprophyticus in asymptomatic PW from primary care centers of the Municipality of La Plata (PCC) between 2008 and 2016 and comparing it with symptomatic NPW in a fertile age, not hospitalized women, who attended the "San Roque" Hospital (HSR) between 2014 and 2017. A total of 2,378 urine samples from PW assisted at the PCC were processed. Two hundred and one were positive (8.5%); 10.4% of them (n: 21) corresponded to S. agalactiae and 10.0% to S. saprophyticus (n: 20). Escherichia coli was isolated in 54%. The total of urine cultures in the population of NPW of the HSR was 2,281 and 526 were positive (23.1%): 7 corresponded to S. agalactiae (1.3%), 18 to S.saprophyticus (3.4%) and 78% to E. coli. In conclusion, the frequency of isolation of S. agalactiae and S. saprophyticus was significantly higher in the population of PW belonging to the PCC than in the NPW studied in the HSR.

Realizou-se um estudo retrospectivo e comparativo de coortes com o objetivo de avaliar a frequência de ITU por S.agalactiae e S.saprophyticus em MGs assintomáticas pertencentes a salas de atendimento primário do município de La Plata (CAPS) entre 2008 e 2016 e compará-lo com NG sintomáticas em idade fértil, não hospitalizadas, que frequentaram o Hospital "San Roque" (HSR) entre 2014 e 2017. Foram processadas 2.378 amostras de urina de MG atendidas nas CAPS. Desse total, 201 foram positivos (8,5%), 10,4% das mesmas (n: 21) corresponderam a S. agalactiae e 10,0% a S. saprophyticus (n: 20). Escherichia coli foi isolada em 54%. As culturas de urina total na população de NG foram de 2.281 e 526 foram positivas (23.1%): 7 correspondem a S.agalactiae (1.3%), 18 a S.saprophyticus (3.4%) e 78% para E. coli. Em conclusão, a frequência de isolamento de S. agalactiae e S. saprophyticus foi significativamente maior na população de MG pertencente às CAPS do que as NG estudadas no HSR.

AIM: To compare two identification methods for coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from patients with urinary tract infections, VITEK® 2 and MALDI-TOF VITEK®MS, with genotypic identification by internal transcribed spacer PCR (ITS-PCR). RESULTS: A total of 217 CoNS isolates were studied. Agreement of the VITEK® 2 system with ITS-PCR was 84.8%, with 98% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Thirty-one of the 33 strains incorrectly identified by VITEK® 2 belonged to the species Staphylococcus saprophyticus. MALDI-TOF VITEK®MS showed an excellent correlation with ITS-PCR since it correctly identified all CoNS isolates. CONCLUSION: MALDI-TOF VITEK®MS is more accurate than the automated VITEK® 2 system in identifying CoNS isolated from urinary tract infections to species level, particularly urinary isolates of S. saprophyticus.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a gram-positive microorganism responsible for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Although some virulence factors are characterized, such as urease, autolysins, adhesins and hemagglutinins, large-scale proteomic studies have not been performed within this species. We performed the characterization of the exoproteome from three S. saprophyticus strains: the reference strain ATCC 15,305, a non-capsular strain 7108 and the 9325 strain containing a thick capsule which were cultured in BHI medium and culture supernatants were analysed by using mass spectrometry approach. We observed a core of 72 secreted proteins. In addition, it was possible to detect diversity in the protein profiles of the exoproteomes. Interestingly, strain 7108 presented no secretion of three antigenic proteins, including the classical SsaA antigen. In addition, the level of antigenic proteins secreted by strain 9325 was higher than in ATCC 15,305. This result was confirmed by Western blot analysis using anti-SsaA polyclonal antibodies, and no production/ secretion of SsaA was detected in strain 7108. Transcriptional data shows that 7108 strain produces transcripts encoding SsaA, suggesting post-transcriptional regulation occurs in this strain. Moreover, when compared with the other strains that were analyzed, it was possible to detect higher levels of proteases secreted by strain 7108 and higher levels of antigenic proteins and transglycosylases secreted by 9325 strain. The results reveal diversity in protein secretion among strains. This research is an important first step towards understanding the variability in S. saprophyticus exoproteome profile and could be significant in explaining differences among strains.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is an important pathogen responsible for community urinary tract infections (UTI). Besides composing the human microbiota, this species is widely distributed in the environment and the origins of this organism for human infection is not fully characterized. Although some virulence determinants are known, such as d-serine deaminase (DsdA), urease and cell-wall associated proteins, few studies investigated the distribution of virulence-associated genes and analyzed the pathogenic potential of S. saprophyticus strains from different sources. The aim of the present study was to detect the presence of S. saprophyticus genes encoding surface proteins UafA, Aas, Ssp, SdrI, SssF as well as the DsdA and urease enzymes. A total of 142 S. saprophyticus strains were obtained from four sources: UTI, colonization, water and food. It was found, in every tested strain, the presence of genes encoding the surface proteins UafA, Aas, Ssp and SssF and the DsdA and urease enzymes. In contrast, the gene encoding SdrI surface protein was not detected in any of the strains of S. saprophyticus. These results provide a better understanding of the characteristics of S. saprophyticus strains and suggest that isolates from non-human sources have a potential to colonize the urinary tract.

The crude ethanol extract (CEE) and fractions from branches of Protium spruceanum were subjected to antibacterial and cytotoxicity assays. Compounds of the most active fraction were identified by GC-MS and LC-MS. CEE was active against 19 bacteria and the ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed the lowest minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC 0.3-80.0 mg/mL). Through time-kill assay was observed that EAF induced rapid bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus saprophyticus. The cytotoxicity tests against L929 fibroblasts showed great potential of EAF on the treatment of infections caused by five bacteria (MBC < IC50). The results provide in vitro scientific support to the possible application of branches of P. spruceanum as antimicrobial agent that may contribute for treatment of infections.

INTRODUCTION: Bovine mastitis causes important economic losses in the dairy industry. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are a group of bacteria commonly isolated from bovine mastitis and can display resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine staphylococcal resistance towards ß-lactam, macrolide and lincosamide antimicrobials in quarters previously treated with third-generation cephalosporin and after lincosamide intramammary therapy. METHODS: Sick quarters of eighteen cows from Villaguay, Entre Ríos (Argentina) with clinical mastitis were studied. All staphylococcal isolates were tested by disk diffusion for their antimicrobial susceptibilities. Cefoxitin resistance was investigated by PCR and sequencing for both the mecA and mecC genes. RESULTS: Resistances to penicillin, oxacillin and cefoxitin were observed, whereas no resistance to macrolide and lincosamide was detected. A cefoxitin-resistant Staphylococcus saprophyticus was found to be mecA-negative but mecC-positive. CONCLUSIONS: This study reports for the first time the mecC gene from a CNS in bovine mastitis in South America. Because CNS may act as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes, they can be seen as a potential public health threat with respect to antimicrobial resistance and the development of multiple resistance. Also, the emergence of methicillin-resistant phenotypes will limit therapeutic options.

The uropathogen Staphylococcus saprophyticus is an ubiquitous bacterium but little is known about mechanisms that allow its persistence in diverse environments. Here we evaluated S. saprophyticus growth and survival during heat shock, the expression of stress response regulators ctsR and hrcA through qRT-PCR and heat shock protein synthesis through 35S-Met metabolic labeling. S. saprophyticus does not tolerate temperatures much higher than the optimal 37 °C, as its growth is greatly affected at 42 °C, though viability is maintained up to 48 °C. At 42 °C, the expression of ctsR and hrcA repressor genes approximately triple when compared to 37 °C and continue to increase together with temperature till 48 °C. Expression of hrcA peaks after 20 min of heat shock and decreases significantly after 30 min, indicating that heat stress response regulated by this gene may last 20-30 min. An increase in temperature is accompanied by the synthesis of at least eight proteins, three of which are likely the chaperones DnaK, GroEL and ClpB. In silico analysis indicate that the groEL gene may be regulated by HrcA, clpB by CtsR and dnaK by both repressors. This is the first work to discuss heat stress response in S. saprophyticus and a step forward in the understanding of mechanisms that make this a widespread and emergent pathogen.

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus saprophyticus are the most common and most important staphylococcal species associated with urinary tract infections. The objective of the present study was to compare and to evaluate the accuracy of four phenotypic methods for the detection of beta-lactamase production in Staphylococcus spp. Seventy-three strains produced a halo with a diameter ≤28 mm (penicillin resistant) and all of them were positive for the blaZ gene. Among the 28 susceptible strain (halo ≥29 mm), 23 carried the blaZ gene and five did not. The zone edge test was the most sensitive (90.3%), followed by MIC determination (85.5%), but the specificity of the former was low (40.0%). The nitrocefin test was the least sensitive (28.9%). However, the nitrocefin test together with the disk diffusion method showed the highest specificity (100%). The present results demonstrated that the zone edge test was the most sensitive phenotypic test for detection of beta-lactamase, although it is still not an ideal test to detect this type of resistance since its specificity was low. However, the inhibition halo diameter of the penicillin disk can be used together with the zone edge test since the same disk is employed in the two tests. Combined analysis of the two tests shows a sensitivity of 90.3% and specificity of 100%, proving better sensitivity, especially for S. saprophyticus. This is a low-cost test of easy application and interpretation that can be used in small and medium-sized laboratories where susceptibility testing is usually performed by the disk diffusion method.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is an uropathogen belonging to the human microbiota and is responsible for community-acquired infections of the urinary tract. Identification of Staphylococcus species by biochemical tests is laborious and costly when compared to routine laboratory tests. Because of their high sensitivity and specificity, molecular methods are better suited for accurate identification of Staphylococcusspp. Therefore, the goal of this work was to standardize a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol using species-specific primers, based on the heat-shock repressor coding hrcA gene, for the identification of S.saprophyticus. A total of 142 S. saprophyticus strains were obtained from different sources, including clinical, environmental, and foodborne strains. We also included 98 strains of Staphylococcus spp. to further validate the proposed method. Reliable results for the detection of S. saprophyticus isolates were obtained for 100% of the strains evaluated. The results were in accordance with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry identification, thus highlighting the applicability of species-specific PCR for the molecular identification of S. saprophyticus.

As infecções do trato urinário (ITUs) estão entre as queixas mais frequentes em consultas de atendimento primário, principalmente entre mulheres. As ITUs ocorrem em 1% a 3% das meninas em idade escolar, com aumento acentuado da incidência com o início da atividade sexual. Calcula-se uma incidência anual de 7% em mulheres de todas as idades, atingindo um pico máximo entre 15 e 24 anos de idade e entre mulheres com mais de 65 anos. Escherichia coli e Staphylococcus saprophyticus estão envolvidos em cerca de 80% das infecções urinárias não complicadas encontradas na população. O aumento da resistência aos antibióticos reforça a necessidade da escolha do medicamento com o auxílio de cultura e sensibilidade bacterianas. A profilaxia da ITU está recomendada em determinados casos, principalmente em mulheres que apresentam recorrência; dentre elas estão as sexualmente ativas.


Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common complaint in primary care appointment, mainly for women. UTI occurs between 1% and 3% of school-age children with increasing incidence due to the beginning of sexual life. It is estimated an incidence of 7% in women of all ages reaching the highest peak between the ages of 15-24 and more than 65 years old. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus are involved in about 80% of uncomplicated urinary infections in population. The increasing antibiotic resistance supports the necessity of medicament choice with bacterial culture and sensitivity assistance. Prophylaxis for urinary tract infections (UTIs) is recommended in some cases, mainly for women who show recurrence; among those that are sexually active.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the etiological uropathogens and the susceptibility profile findings on urine culture between sporadic cases of community-acquired, uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) and recurrent UTI cases in women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 1629 women with uncomplicated UTI evaluated at our hospital between January 2007 and December 2012. Patients were divided into 2 groups: (1) no recurrent UTI and (2) recurrent UTI. We analyzed the microbiological findings and compared susceptibility profiles between groups. RESULTS: A total of 420 women were included. Group 1 had 233 (55.5%) patients and group 2 had 187 (44.5%). Escherichia coli was the most common agent in both groups (76.4% and 74.3%, respectively; P = .625), whereas Staphylococcus saprophyticus (8.2%) was the second most common in group 1, and Enterococcus faecalis was the second most common in group 2 (8.0%). Nitrofurantoin was the only oral agent that maintained the susceptibility profile in both groups (87.1% and 88.7%, respectively; P = .883). For E coli infections, only nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin/clavulanate maintained susceptibility rates more than 90% in both groups. CONCLUSION: UTI episodes in patients with recurrent UTI had similar bacterial spectra, but different susceptibility profiles compared with those from patients with nonrecurrent infections. The susceptibility rate for nitrofurantoin in patients with recurrent UTI remained high and comparable to the observed in patients with sporadic UTI, reinforcing its indication for empirical treatment while waiting for urine culture results.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a rarely reported agent of urinary tract infection (UTI) in the pediatric population. In our retrospective 3-year study, S. saprophyticus comprised 24.5% of 106 isolates of UTIs in female adolescents 12-15 years of age who attended an emergency department. Clinicians should be aware of the high prevalence of this etiology when empirically treating UTIs in female adolescents.

This study describes the seasonal composition and the antibacterial, antioxidant and anticholinesterase activity of the essential oil from Eugenia brasiliensis leaves. Analysis by using GC allowed the identification of 40 compounds. It was observed that the monoterpenes varied more (42%) than the sesquiterpenes (14%), and that the monoterpene hydrocarbons suffered the greatest variation throughout the year (64%). Major compounds were spathulenol in the spring (16.02 ± 0.44%) and summer (18.17 ± 0.41%), τ-cadinol in the autumn (12.83 ± 0.03%) and α-pinene (15.94 ± 0.58%) in the winter. Essential oils were tested for their antibacterial activity, and the best result was obtained from the autumn oil, with MIC = 500 µg mL(- 1) against Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH, lipid peroxidation and iron-reducing power assays, as well as the anticholinesterase activity. Both tests showed a weak performance of the essential oils.
