ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to evaluate the impact of community pharmacy (CP)-based medication therapy management (MTM) program on clinical and humanistic outcomes in patients with uncontrolled diabetes. An open label, parallel-group randomised controlled trial was undertaken at a community pharmacy in Riyadh city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Patients with a diagnosis of uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c of ≥ 8%) meeting the eligibility criteria were randomised to receive either the MTM programme provided by pharmacists or standard care. The primary outcome was change in HbA1c over 6 months. Secondary outcomes included: changes in clinical parameters (blood pressure (BP), lipid profile, serum creatinine (SCr) and albumin-to- creatinine ratio (ACR)), types of drug-related problems (DRPs), health service utilization (HSU), adherence, diabetes distress and overall patient satisfaction with the service at 6-month. A sufficiently powered sample of 160 participants with a mean age was 50 years (SD ± 11.9) was recruited. The majority of the patients (68.1%) were male and had diabetes for more than eight years [IQR 3, 14]. After adjusting for baseline HbA1c, compared to the control group, the mean HbA1c level was 0.02% (p = 0.929) and 0.2% (p = 0.47) lower in the intervention arm at 3-month and 6-month respectively. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Nonetheless, within each arm, there was a significant improvement in HbA1c from baseline. Furthermore, the intervention arm demonstrated improvement in BP control (SBP lowered by 3.2 mmHg (p = 0.05) and DBP lowered by 3.8 mmHg (p = 0.008)). During the study period, none of the participants in the intervention group reported hospitalization or ER visits compared to 14 patients in the control group [OR 0.069 (95% CI 0.004, 1.3)]. Patient satisfaction as measured by Patient Satisfaction with Pharmacist Services Questionnaire 2.0 (PSPSQ 2.0) was significantly higher among MTM program participants compared to standard care (p = 0.00001). Patients in the MTM program were eight times more likely to be adherent compared to the patients in the standard care [OR 7.89 (95% CI 3.6, 17.4)]. MTM program metrics showed that per patient, the pharmacists spent a median of 35 [IQR 30, 44.5] minutes at the initial visit and 20 [IQR 10, 25] minutes during the 6-month visit. The number of DRPs had significantly dropped in the intervention arm at 3 and 6-month (p = 0.0001). In conclusion, CP-based MTM program can improve health outcomes and prevent hospitalisations in patients with diabetes. These findings support the implementation of CP-based MTM services for patients with diabetes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Septal perforations (SPs) present a distinct challenge. There are many described surgical approaches with variable success rates. The goal of this study is to describe a new technique in repairing SP. METHODS: A case series of eighteen patients with anterior septal perforation who underwent endoscopic repair with the "tunnel technique" based on anterior ethmoid artery flap (AEA) were analyzed. Demographic data, etiology, size of perforation, and success rate were collected. RESULTS: Eighteen cases with male predominance (67%) were enrolled from 2019 to 2022. The average perforation size was 1.5 cm (0.5- 3.6 cm). The success rate of complete SP closure was 94% (n = 17/18) with no complications after surgery. The patients were followed up for 7 ± 5.2 months. CONCLUSIONS: AEA flap reconstruction with the tunnel technique is associated with favorable outcomes in SP closure. The tunnel technique provides a useful flap bolster and minimizes the use of other supportive measures. This technique offers an addition to other techniques for septal perforation repair. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Meniscal root tears are defined as soft-tissue and/or osseous injuries that rip or avulse within one centimeter of the meniscal insertion to the tibial plateau. These injuries impact around 100,000 patients a year and make up 10 % to 21 % of all meniscal tears. Meniscal extrusion frequently happens when there are root rips, and the transmission of circumferential hoop loads is hampered. CASE PRESENTATION: We present one case of a 28-year-old male who complained of pain and stiffness in his left knee since 2 years after undergoing ACL reconstruction using a hamstring autograft. His examination revealed joint line tenderness on both the medial and lateral sides of the left knee. Further investigations involving X-ray and MRI established the diagnosis of both medial and lateral meniscal root tears, which were surgically managed using the transtibial pullout technique. DISCUSSION: The biomechanical implications of meniscal root tears, such as loss of hoop forces and increased tibiofemoral contact pressures, underscore the importance of timely diagnosis and management. The literature advocates surgical treatment for managing root tears, as leaving them without surgical intervention can lead to functional outcomes similar to those of total meniscectomy. CONCLUSION: This case report presents both menisci posterior root tears with an intact ACL graft which is unique in that they commonly tear in conjuction with ACL. These kind of injuries necessitates prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention to protect the knee from early arthritic changes.

BACKGROUND: Understanding patient satisfaction is key to advancing pharmacy services and improving health outcomes. There is a lack of a translated and psychometrically validated tool in the Arabic language to measure patient satisfaction with pharmacy services. OBJECTIVE: To translate the English version of the PSPSQ 2.0 into Arabic language, culturally adapt, and verify its reliability and validity. SETTING: A community pharmacy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2021 and June 2022 among patients with diabetes attending a community pharmacy. The International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research good practice guidelines for linguistic translation and cultural adaptation were used to translate and culturally adapt the English version of PSPSQ 2.0 into Arabic. The Arabic version of PSPSQ 2.0 was subjected to factor analysis using principal component analysis with varimax rotation to evaluate its validity and Cronbach's alpha was used to assess the reliability of PSPSQ 2.0. RESULTS: A total of 129 (68.2% male, and mean age 50 (SD: 11.9) years) patients with diabetes participated in the study. The analysis was undertaken for the items in each of the three domains of PSPSQ 2.0: quality of care, interprofessional relationship and overall care. Exploratory factor analysis revealed validity of 92.7%, 80.5% and 96.2%, respectively. The Arabic version of PSPSQ 2.0 had high internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha scores 0.99, 0.95 and 0.98 for the three measured domains, respectively. The sample adequacy was 0.924. CONCLUSION: The PSPSQ 2.0 was successfully translated and culturally adapted into the Arabic language and had acceptable validity and reliability to measure patient satisfaction with services provided by pharmacists in community pharmacies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Congenital absence of the menisci is a rare anatomical variation characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of one or both menisci in the knee joint. The menisci are crucial in load distribution, joint stability, and shock absorption. Understanding the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of this condition is important for optimal patient care. CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old male with a long-standing history of knee pain underwent diagnostic arthroscopy, revealing a congenital absence of the meniscus. The patient's clinical findings, imaging results, surgical procedures, and pertinent images are detailed. This case presents a unique aspect with the congenital absence of the meniscus, contributing valuable insights to the literature on rare anatomical anomalies. CONCLUSION: This case of congenital absence of the menisci highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by rare anomalies. The diagnostic arthroscopy played a crucial role in identifying the absence of the meniscus and providing an explanation for the patient's persistent knee pain. The case underscores the importance of individualized treatment approaches, including physical therapy, for optimal management of rare meniscal anomalies. Further research is warranted to explore effective management strategies for the aforementioned cases and to expand our knowledge of these rare conditions.

ABSTRACT

Drug repurposing, rebranding an existing drug for a new therapeutic indication, is deemed a beneficial approach for a quick and cost-effective drug discovery process by skipping preclinical, Phase 1 trials and pharmacokinetic studies. Several psychotropic drugs, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), were studied for their potential application in different diseases, especially in cancer therapy. Fluoxetine (FLX) is one of the most prescribed psychotropic agents from the SSRIs class for the treatment of several neuropsychiatric disorders with a favorable safety profile. FLX exhibited different oncolytic effects via mechanisms distinct from its main serotonergic activity. Taking advantage of its ability to rapidly penetrate the blood-brain barrier, FLX could be particularly useful in brain tumors. This was proved by different in vitro and in vivo experiments using FLX as a monotherapy or combination with temozolomide (TMZ) or radiotherapy. In this review of the literature, we summarize the potential pleiotropic oncolytic roles of FLX against different cancers, highlighting the multifaceted activities of FLX and its ability to interrupt cancer proliferation via several molecular mechanisms and even surmount multidrug resistance (MDR). We elaborated on the successful synergistic combinations such as FXR/temozolomide and FXR/raloxifene for the treatment of glioblastoma and breast cancer, respectively. We showcased beneficial pharmaceutical trials to load FLX onto carriers to enhance its safety and efficacy on cancer cells. This is the first review article extensively summarizing all previous FLX repurposing studies for the management of cancer.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Maxillary sinus pathology is commonly approached through endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy (MMA). However, MMA does not provide full exposure to certain aspects of the maxillary sinus, such as alveolar, zygomatic, and prelacrimal recesses. In these hidden maxillary sinus niches, a combination approach with MMA is required for better exposure and access. In this article, we present a modification of inferior maxillary antrostomy (IMA) to allow for a temporary intraoperative window with no significant postoperative consequences. Objectives: (1) To describe our modification of IMA. (2) To report the outcome of maxillary sinus disease, postoperative complications, and flap condition. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review study. It was performed on 20 patients where submucosal temporary inferior maxillary antrostomy (STIMA) was indicated in the period from January 1, 2020, and July 1, 2023. All patients were assessed for their demographics, diagnosis, indication for STIMA, maxillary disease outcome, presence of postoperative complications, and flap condition. Result: Total of 18 patients fulfilled our inclusion/exclusion criteria; of them, 13 were males while the remaining were females. Mean age of patients was 33 years; most common diagnosis was chronic sinusitis. Status of maxillary sinus mucosa was healthy in all except 4 patients having polypoidal mucosa while flap condition was intact in all patients except 2 patients with pinpoint defects. Postoperative complications assessment demonstrated no neural, orbital, lacrimal, or dental complications in all patients. Conclusion: This retrospective chart review showed promising technique to address challenging maxillary lesions in difficult-to-access locations where combined approaches are necessary.

BACKGROUND: Psychological assessment after intensive care unit (ICU) discharge is increasingly used to assess patients' cognitive and psychological well-being. However, few studies have examined those who recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a paucity of data from the Middle East assessing the post-ICU discharge mental health status of patients who had COVID-19. AIM: To evaluate anxiety and depression among patients who had severe COVID-19. METHODS: This is a prospective single-center follow-up questionnaire-based study of adults who were admitted to the ICU or under ICU consultation for > 24 h for COVID-19. Eligible patients were contacted via telephone. The patient's anxiety and depression six months after ICU discharge were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The primary outcome was the mean HADS score. The secondary outcomes were risk factors of anxiety and/or depression. RESULTS: Patients who were admitted to the ICU because of COVID-19 were screened (n = 518). Of these, 48 completed the questionnaires. The mean age was 56.3 ± 17.2 years. Thirty patients (62.5%) were male. The main comorbidities were endocrine (n = 24, 50%) and cardiovascular (n = 21, 43.8%) diseases. The mean overall HADS score for anxiety and depression at 6 months post-ICU discharge was 11.4 (SD ± 8.5). A HADS score of > 7 for anxiety and depression was detected in 15 patients (30%) and 18 patients (36%), respectively. Results from the multivariable ordered logistic regression demonstrated that vasopressor use was associated with the development of anxiety and depression [odds ratio (OR) 39.06, 95% confidence interval: 1.309-1165.8; P < 0.05]. CONCLUSION: Six months after ICU discharge, 30% of patients who had COVID-19 demonstrated a HADS score that confirmed anxiety and depression. To compare the psychological status of patients following an ICU admission (with vs without COVID-19), further studies are warranted.

Introduction Tuberculosis is a critical health issue worldwide. Most infected persons are asymptomatic and categorized as having a latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Healthcare workers (HCWs) are more prone to being infected with tuberculosis and should be enrolled in a screening program for early detection. Objectives The study aims to estimate the prevalence of LTBI among nurses working in critical areas which include adult intensive care units, pediatric intensive care units, emergency departments, oncology departments, dialysis departments, tuberculosis labs, isolation rooms, and cardiac center intensive care units. Methods A record-based cross-sectional survey measured the prevalence of LTBI among nurses working in critical areas at Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We reviewed the occupational health records of all nurses working in critical areas from June 1, 2021, to June 1, 2022. We recorded the data reviewed throughout the year in the Occupational Health Department at PSMMC. We excluded all participants with previously documented positive tuberculin skin test (TST) from the study. We analyzed the sociodemographic data, working years, working location, job title, and TST results. Results We included a total of 771 out of 2025 nurses in this study. Participants were mostly women (88%) and in the 26-35-year age group (67.7%). Most of the participants were originally from the Philippines (66.3%). The overall LTBI prevalence among nurses was 34.5%. The highest prevalence of LTBI was among nurses working in the cardiac intensive care unit (53.5%), and the lowest prevalence was among nurses working in the isolation department (8.9%; p-value <0.0001). Those who worked more in the hospital were significantly more infected with LTBI (p-value <0.04). Conclusion LTBI remains a significant health risk worldwide and in the Middle East as well as among HCWs. This underscores the necessity of comprehensive pre-hiring screening, annual screening, infection control protocols, and active management of HCWs with LTBI.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms presents a substantial global public health threat. The increase in pathogens resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics underscores the urgent requirement to explore alternative treatment strategies. This study adopts a novel approach by harnessing natural resources, specifically essential oils (EO), to combat bacterial pathogenicity. The primary aim of this research was to analyze the chemical composition of the aerial part of the Matricaria aurea (M. aureas) EO and evaluate its potential for inhibiting quorum sensing (QS) and disrupting biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis unveiled that α-bisabolol oxide A constituted the predominant portion, comprising 64.8% of the total, with ß-bisabolene at 6.3% and α-farnesene at 4.8% following closely behind. The antibiofilm efficacy was observed at concentrations of 0.3, 0.15, and 0.08 mg/mL, demonstrating negligible effects on cell viability. Furthermore, the EO from M. aurea effectively inhibited the formation of P. aeruginosa biofilms by diminishing aggregation, hydrophobicity, and swarming motility. Significantly, the EO treatment resulted in a conspicuous decrease in the production of pyocyanin, rhamnolipid, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), along with a reduction in the enzymatic activity of protease and chitinase. The EO effectively hindered QS by disrupting QS mechanisms, resulting in a marked decline in the secretion of N-Acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules and the expression of phazA1 and aprA genes. This investigation offers compelling evidence supporting the potential of M. aurea EO as a promising therapeutic candidate for addressing infectious diseases induced by biofilm formation.

ABSTRACT

The surface roughness (Ra) of indirect computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-fabricated dental restorations is crucial for their long-term durability. This study intended to evaluate the Ra of five different types of contemporary indirect CAD/CAM restorative materials with varying compositions that were glazed and finished/polished. A total of 75 specimens, disc-shaped (10 mm × 2 mm), were obtained from five materials (n = 15) (Tetric CAD, IPS e.max CAD, IPS e.max ZirCAD, CELTRA Duo, and Vita Enamic) and fabricated by CAD/CAM. One of the two surfaces for each specimen was subjected to glazing, while the other surface was subjected to finishing/polishing. The Ra of the two surfaces in micrometers (µm) was evaluated using a Profilometer, while the surface topography was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Using SPSS, the Kruskal-Wallis, post hoc Conover, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to statistically evaluate the data. A comparison of the Ra for the finished/polished surfaces of the five test materials showed significant differences (p < 0.0001). Among the finished/polished surfaces, the mean rank values of Vita Enamic were significantly higher than the other four test materials (p < 0.0001). A comparison of the Ra of glazed surfaces among the five study materials revealed significant differences (p < 0.0001). The Ra for the IPS e.max ZirCAD material was significantly higher than the rest of the four materials (p < 0.001). A comparison of the Ra for two types of surface conditioning within each of the five test materials showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). Only for IPS e.max ZirCAD was the Ra of the glazed surface significantly higher than the finished/polished surface (p < 0.0001). Significant variations in the surface roughness (Ra) were exhibited between the finished/polished and glazed surfaces of the five test materials. Hybrid ceramics showed the highest Ra values for the finished/polished surfaces, and zirconia exhibited the highest Ra values among the glazed surfaces among the tested materials. The Ra values of either finished/polished or glazed surfaces of the test materials were within the clinically acceptable range (0.2-0.5 µm), except for the glazed surface of the zirconia ceramics (0.84 µm).

In orthodontics, both the treatment goals and the impact of orthodontic equipment on patients' aesthetic appearance have contributed to a rise in patients' aesthetic demands over the years. Patients considering orthodontic treatment are significantly concerned about the potential compromise in facial appearance that conventional orthodontic therapy might cause. Clinical practice has integrated aesthetic materials and procedures to address these restrictions. This review will examine the present data and outcomes linked to lingual orthodontics. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase were the electronic databases searched. Research interests mainly included biomechanics, appliance design, bonding, laboratory settings, case reports, survey research, and treatment outcomes. The goal was to locate the most recent data regarding lingual orthodontics. A consistent and predictable pattern emerges from the available evidence on lingual orthodontics. Several areas have received a lot of attention over the past decade, including the ability to forecast outcomes and patients' preparedness to embrace these changes. The current state of knowledge on the biomechanical principles of lingual orthodontics is solid, as this review shows. Lingual orthodontic appliances can efficiently handle any orthodontic scenario that a labial appliance can handle. The reason is that the completely customized lingual appliance might bring about the desired result in terms of treatment.

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is caused by the Marburg virus, a one-of-a-kind zoonotic RNA virus from the genus Filovirus. Thus, this current study employed AI-based QSAR and molecular docking-based virtual screening for identifying potential binders against the target protein (nucleoprotein (NP)) of the Marburg virus. A total of 2727 phytochemicals were used for screening, out of which the top three compounds (74977521, 90470472, and 11953909) were identified based on their predicted bioactivity (pIC50) and binding score (< - 7.4 kcal/mol). Later, MD simulation in triplicates and trajectory analysis were performed which showed that 11953909 and 74977521 had the most stable and consistent complex formations and had the most significant interactions with the highest number of hydrogen bonds. PCA (principal component analysis) and FEL (free energy landscape) analysis indicated that these compounds had favourable energy states for most of the conformations. The total binding free energy of the compounds using the MM/GBSA technique showed that 11953909 (ΔGTOTAL = - 30.78 kcal/mol) and 74977521 (ΔGTOTAL = - 30 kcal/mol) had the highest binding affinity with the protein. Overall, this in silico pipeline proposed that the phytochemicals 11953909 and 74977521 could be the possible binders of NP. This study aimed to find phytochemicals inhibiting the protein's function and potentially treating MVD.

BACKGROUND: The variation in the reported vaccine safety and effectiveness could contribute to the high rates of vaccine hesitancy among the general population and healthcare workers in areas where monkeypox (mpox) is circulating. In this review, our objective was to evaluate the safety, immunogenicity, effectiveness, and efficacy of the mpox vaccines. METHODS: An extensive search for articles across multiple databases was performed, including searching six databases (PubMed Central, PubMed Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, ProQuest), two pre-print databases (European PMC Preprint and MedRxiv), and Google Scholar. RESULTS: A total of 4290 citations were retrieved from the included databases. Following the removal of duplicates and the initial screening of records, a total of 36 studies were included into the analysis. Additionally, we identified five more studies through manual searches, resulting in a total of 41 eligible articles for qualitative synthesis. The study findings revealed that mpox vaccines demonstrate the ability to generate adequate antibodies; however, their effectiveness may decrease over time, exhibiting varying safety profiles. Most of the included studies consistently reported substantial levels of effectiveness and efficacy against mpox. Interestingly, the number of vaccine doses administered was found to influence the degree of immunogenicity, subsequently impacting the overall effectiveness and efficacy of the vaccines. Furthermore, we found that smallpox vaccines exhibited a form of cross-protection against mpox. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccines can be used to prevent mpox and effectively control its spread.

ABSTRACT

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria constitute one of the most serious global health threats. The increasing incidence rate of bacterial infections caused by MDR strains and the decrease in the number of newly developed antibiotics have prompted the scientific community to search for alternatives. One such alternative is the use of bacteriophages. In this review, we discuss the most critical MDR organisms, including Acinetobacter baumanni, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus The efficacy of phage therapy against MDR bacteria is also discussed. We included studies from the last 10 years that examined the efficacy of phage therapy against MDR pathogens. In addition, this review highlights the effect of bacteriophages against bacterial biofilms. The existing knowledge indicates that phage therapy is a potential therapeutic strategy against MDR bacteria. However, the adverse effects of phage therapy, such as toxicity, and the emergence of phage resistance have not yet been resolved.

ABSTRACT

Background: There are multiple pieces of evidence in the literature that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a pronounced effect on physiological health. There is little existing literature that has studied the pandemic's impact on adhesive capsulitis (AC) incidence. This study aimed to compare the incidence of primary AC before and during the pandemic. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was done to establish the incidence of primary AC during the COVID-19 pandemic, from March 2020 to March 2021, the pandemic period, and from March 2019 to March 2020, the control period. During these periods, all patients diagnosed with primary AC were included. Patients were also categorized into three different treatment groups according to corticosteroid injection status (none, 1 injection, and 2 injections). The waiting time for the appointment was calculated as a possible confounding factor. Statistical analysis used the chi-square for categorical variables and the Student t test for continuous variables. Results: There were 69 patients diagnosed with primary AC out of 704 new referrals during the pandemic. One year earlier, a total of 73 patients were diagnosed with primary AC out of 1148 new referrals. Representing a relative increase of 3.5% (P = .086) in the incidence of primary AC. No significant differences were found between the control and the pandemic groups in regard to the distribution of patients per treatment group (P = .13), age (P = .49), sex (P = .21), laterality (P = .54), diabetic disease (P = .45), and thyroid disease (P = .62). Conclusion: There was a nonstatistically significant increase in the incidence of primary AC during the COVID-19 pandemic. No other significant differences were found. Further research is still needed to evaluate the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and AC.

ABSTRACT

Background/purpose: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious complication among dental patients undergoing treatment with antiresorptive medications such as bisphosphonate and denosumab. The present survey investigated the awareness and practice of dentists in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries regarding MRONJ. Materials and methods: This questionnaire-based study was conducted among dental practitioners in all six GCC countries. A questionnaire was designed and distributed among all potential participants via different social media platforms. SPSS version 22 was used for data analysis, and P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Overall, 1685 dentists from the six GCC countries participated in the present study. The surveyed dentists revealed relatively fair practices and awareness regarding MRONJ and its prevention, with the majority reported asking their patients about history of anti-osteoporotic medications (67.8%), recording name of the medication (73.1%) and duration of treatment (75.5%). However, the majority of the participants were unconfident about the duration of drug holiday prior to dental surgical interventions (70.6%) and the overall good level of knowledge/practice related to MRONJ was just 50.6%. The regression analysis revealed that previous exposure to MRONJ cases and attending a seminar, course, meeting, or conference about osteonecrosis of the jaw were independent predictors for positive awareness/good practice regarding MRONJ (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results show inadequate awareness and practices of dentists practicing in GCC countries regarding MRONJ, with significant variations among the countries. Therefore, appropriate interventions such as periodic continuous education courses are required to improve dentists' knowledge and practices regarding MRONJ.

ABSTRACT

A new species, Leiurushadb Al-Qahtni, Al-Salem, Alqahtani & Badry, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the Majami al-Hadb Protected Area in the Riyadh Province of Saudi Arabia. The new species is compared with species of Leiurus distributed in Saudi Arabia, especially L.arabicus Lowe, Yagmur & Kovarík, 2014. The integrated results indicate that the population found in Majami al-Hadb represents a distinct species, which is described herein. Moreover, the molecular analysis is conducted on the mitochondrial gene 16S rRNA to compare L.hadb sp. nov. with samples of L.arabicus and L.haenggii from Saudi Arabia. The analysis revealed a genetic divergence ranging from 6.0 to 12%. The combination of molecular evidence and morphological characteristics provides adequate support for recognizing the Majami al-Hadb population as a distinct species. Additionally, an identification key for the genus Leiurus found in Saudi Arabia is also provided.
