ABSTRACT

Hemibiotrophic fungi in the genus Colletotrichum employ a biotrophic phase invading host epidermal cells followed by a necrotrophic phase spreading through neighboring mesophyll and epidermal cells. We used serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) to compare subcellular changes that occur in Medicago sativa (alfalfa) cotyledons during infection by Colletotrichum destructivum (compatible on M. sativa) and C. higginsianum (incompatible on M. sativa). Three-dimensional reconstruction of serial images revealed that alfalfa epidermal cells infected with C. destructivum undergo massive cytological changes during the first 60 hours following inoculation to accommodate extensive intracellular hyphal growth. Conversely, inoculation with the incompatible species C. higginsianum resulted in no successful penetration events and frequent formation of papilla-like structures and cytoplasmic aggregates beneath attempted fungal penetration sites. Further analysis of the incompatible interaction using focused ion beam-scanning electron microcopy (FIB-SEM) revealed formation of large multivesicular body-like structures that appeared spherical and were not visible in compatible interactions. These structures often fused with the host plasma membrane, giving rise to paramural bodies that appeared to be releasing extracellular vesicles (EVs). Isolation of EVs from the apoplastic space of alfalfa leaves at 60h post inoculation showed significantly more vesicles secreted from alfalfa infected with incompatible fungus compared to compatible fungus, which in turn was more than produced by non-infected plants. Thus, the increased frequency of paramural bodies during incompatible interactions correlated with an increase in EV quantity in apoplastic wash fluids. Together, these results suggest that EVs and paramural bodies contribute to immunity during pathogen attack in alfalfa.

ABSTRACT

The overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1) is a leading cause of multidrug resistance (MDR). Hence, it is crucial to discover effective pharmaceuticals that counteract ABCB1-mediated multidrug resistance. FRAX486 is a p21-activated kinase (PAK) inhibitor. The objective of this study was to investigate whether FRAX486 can reverse ABCB1-mediated multidrug resistance, while also exploring its mechanism of action. The CCK8 assay demonstrated that FRAX486 significantly reversed ABCB1-mediated multidrug resistance. Furthermore, western blotting and immunofluorescence experiments revealed that FRAX486 had no impact on expression level and intracellular localization of ABCB1. Notably, FRAX486 was found to enhance intracellular drug accumulation and reduce efflux, resulting in the reversal of multidrug resistance. Docking analysis also indicated a strong affinity between FRAX486 and ABCB1. This study highlights the ability of FRAX486 to reverse ABCB1-mediated multidrug resistance and provides valuable insights for its clinical application.

ABSTRACT

This study examined low bone mineral density (BMD) prevalence and associated factors among Chinese people living with HIV (PLWH), uncovering a persistent high BMD risk in older individuals, even after adjusting for age and body mass index (BMI). Notably, lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) therapy was linked to reduced BMD, highlighting the imperative need for regular BMD monitoring and interventions in older PLWH. PURPOSE: HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been shown to contribute to lower BMD, resulting in an increased susceptibility to osteopenia and osteoporosis. However, there is limited knowledge about the prevalence of reduced BMD and its associated factors among Chinese PLWH. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with low BMD among PLWH in China. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled PLWH and non-HIV volunteers who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans to measure bone density. Demographic information, laboratory test results, ART regimens, and treatment duration were collected. Univariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors influencing abnormal bone mass in PLWH. RESULTS: A total of 829 individuals were included in this study, comprising the HIV group (n = 706) and the non-HIV group (n = 123). The prevalence of low BMD among all PLWH was found to be 13.88% (98 out of 706). However, among PLWH aged 50 years and above, the prevalence increased to 65.32% (81 out of 124). In contrast, control subjects in the same age group had a prevalence of 38.21% (47 out of 123). After adjusting for age and BMI, older PLWH still demonstrated a higher prevalence of low BMD compared to the non-HIV group (68.24% vs 34.94%, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that older age was strongly associated with a higher risk of low BMD among PLWH, with an odds ratio (OR) of 6.28 for every 10-year increase in age in the ART-naïve population (95% confidence intervals [CIs], 3.12-12.65; P < 0.001) and OR of 4.83 in the ART-experienced population (3.20-7.29, P < 0.001). Within the ART-experienced group, current LPV/r treatment was associated with an increased risk of low BMD (OR = 3.55, 1.24-10.14, P < 0.05), along with lower BMI (OR = 0.84, 0.75-0.95, P < 0.05), and elevated alkaline phosphatase (OR = 1.02, 1.01-1.03, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of low BMD is higher among PLWH aged 50 years and above compared to non-HIV individuals. The use of LPV/r for ART is associated with reduced BMD. These findings emphasize the importance of regular monitoring of BMD in older PLWH and the need for appropriate interventions to mitigate the risks of osteopenia and osteoporosis in this population.

ABSTRACT

Lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries are considered promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries due to their higher volumetric capacity and energy density. However, they still face limitations in efficiently utilizing the active selenium. Here, we develop surface-functionalized mesoporous hollow carbon nanospheres as the selenium host. By using KOH activation, the surface of the carbon nanospheres is functionalized with hydroxyl groups, which greatly improve the utilization of selenium and facilitate the conversion of lithium selenides, leading to much higher capacities compared to ZnCl2 activation and untreated carbon nanospheres. Theory and experimental evidence suggest that surface hydroxyl groups can enhance the reduction conversion of polyselenides to selenides and facilitate the oxidation reaction of selenides to elemental selenium. In-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques provided additional confirmation of the hydroxyl groups electrochemical durability in catalyzing selenium conversion. The meticulously engineered Se cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 594 mA h g-1 at 0.5C, excellent rate capability of 464 mA h g-1 at 2C, and a stable cycling performance of 500 cycles at 2C with a capacity retention of 84.8 %, corresponding to an ultra-low-capacity decay rate of 0.0144 % per cycle, surpassing many reported lithium-selenium battery technologies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Given the high cost of endoscopy in gastric cancer (GC) screening, there is an urgent need to explore cost-effective methods for the large-scale prediction of precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (PLGC). We aim to construct a hierarchical artificial intelligence-based multimodal non-invasive method for pre-endoscopic risk screening, to provide tailored recommendations for endoscopy. METHODS: From December 2022 to December 2023, a large-scale screening study was conducted in Fujian, China. Based on traditional Chinese medicine theory, we simultaneously collected tongue images and inquiry information from 1034 participants, considering the potential of these data for PLGC screening. Then, we introduced inquiry information for the first time, forming a multimodality artificial intelligence model to integrate tongue images and inquiry information for pre-endoscopic screening. Moreover, we validated this approach in another independent external validation cohort, comprising 143 participants from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital. RESULTS: A multimodality artificial intelligence-assisted pre-endoscopic screening model based on tongue images and inquiry information (AITonguequiry) was constructed, adopting a hierarchical prediction strategy, achieving tailored endoscopic recommendations. Validation analysis revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) values of AITonguequiry were 0.74 for overall PLGC (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.71-0.76, p < 0.05) and 0.82 for high-risk PLGC (95% CI 0.82-0.83, p < 0.05), which were significantly and robustly better than those of the independent use of either tongue images or inquiry information alone. In addition, AITonguequiry has superior performance compared to existing PLGC screening methodologies, with the AUC value enhancing 45% in terms of PLGC screening (0.74 vs. 0.51, p < 0.05) and 52% in terms of high-risk PLGC screening (0.82 vs. 0.54, p < 0.05). In the independent external verification, the AUC values were 0.69 for PLGC and 0.76 for high-risk PLGC. CONCLUSION: Our AITonguequiry artificial intelligence model, for the first time, incorporates inquiry information and tongue images, leading to a higher precision and finer-grained pre-endoscopic screening of PLGC. This enhances patient screening efficiency and alleviates patient burden.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of implant-assisted dental intentional replantation (IR) for the treatment of "drifted" anterior periodontally hopeless teeth (PHT). METHODS: The present authors recruited 22 patients with stage III/IV periodontitis who suffered drifting of the maxillary anterior teeth, with a total of 25 teeth. The PHT were extracted for in vitro root canal treatment (RCT). The root surface was smoothed and the shape was trimmed, and the alveolar socket was scratched. The dental implant system was used to prepare the alveolar socket according to the direction, depth and shape of the tooth implantation. The PHT were reimplanted into the prepared alveolar socket. The periodontal indicators were analysed statistically before and after surgery. RESULT: Twenty-two patients who completed the full course of treatment, with a total of 25 PHT, had a successful retention rate of 88%. Mean periodontal probing depth (PPD) decreased by 2.880 ± 0.556 mm and 3.390 ± 0.634 mm at 6 months and 1 year, respectively, and clinical attachment loss (CAL) decreased by 2.600 ± 0.622 mm and 2.959 ± 0.731 mm at the same time points, respectively, showing significant improvement (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Dental implant system-assisted IR can effectively preserve "drifted" natural PHT in patients with stage III/IV periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Mazabraud's syndrome (MS) is a rare and slowly progressive benign disease characterized by the concurrent presence of fibrous dysplasia of bone and intramuscular myxoma, and is thought to be associated with mutations of the GNAS gene. To date, only about 100 cases of MS have been reported in the literature, but its standard treatment strategy remains unclear. CASE SUMMARY: We report two cases of MS in young women who underwent different treatments based on their symptoms and disease manifestations. The first patient, aged 37, received internal fixation and intravenous bisphosphonate for a pathological fracture of the right femoral neck, excision of a right vastus medialis myxoma was subsequently performed for pain control, and asymptomatic psoas myxomas were monitored without surgery. Genetic testing confirmed a GNAS gene mutation in this patient. The second patient, aged 24, underwent right vastus intermedius muscle myxoma resection, and conservative treatment for fibrous dysplasia of the ilium. These patients were followed-up for 17 months and 3 years, respectively, and are now in a stable condition. CONCLUSION: Various treatments have been selected for MS patients who suffer different symptoms. The main treatment for myxomas is surgical resection, while fibrous dysplasia is selectively treated if the patient experiences pathological fracture or severe pain. However, given the documented instances of malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia in individuals with MS, close follow-up is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Studies with large size samples on the liver histological changes of indeterminate phase chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients were not previously conducted. AIM: To assess the liver histological changes in the indeterminate phase CHB patients using liver biopsy. METHODS: The clinical and laboratory data of 1532 untreated CHB patients were collected, and all patients had least once liver biopsy from January 2015 to December 2021. The significant differences among different phases of CHB infection were compared with t-test, and the risk factors of significant liver histological changes were analyzed by the multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 1532 untreated CHB patients, 814 (53.13%) patients were in the indeterminate phase. Significant liver histological changes (defined as biopsy score ≥ G2 and/or ≥ S2) were found in 488/814 (59.95%) CHB patients in the indeterminate phase. Significant liver histological changes were significant differences among different age, platelets (PLTs), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) subgroup in indeterminate patient. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that age ≥ 40 years old [adjust odd risk (aOR), 1.44; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-1.97; P = 0.02], PLTs ≤ 150 × 109/L (aOR, 2.99; 95%CI: 1.85-4.83; P < 0.0001), and ALT ≥ upper limits of normal (aOR, 1.48; 95%CI: 1.08, 2.05, P = 0.0163) were independent risk factors for significant liver histological changes in CHB patients in the indeterminate phase. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that significant liver histological changes were not rare among the untreated CHB patients in indeterminate phase, and additional strategies are urgently required for the management of these patients.

OBJECTIVES: To identify subgroups of patients with distinct chemotherapy-induced vomiting (CIV) profiles; determine how these subgroups differ on several demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics; and evaluate factors associated with chemotherapy-induced nausea and CIV profiles. SAMPLE & SETTING: Adult patients (N = 1,338) receiving cancer chemotherapy. METHODS & VARIABLES: Data were collected on demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics. Differences among subgroups of patients with distinct CIV profiles were evaluated using parametric and nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Three CIV profiles (None, Decreasing, and Increasing) were identified. Compared with the None class, Decreasing and Increasing classes were more likely to have lower household income and a higher comorbidity burden, as well as to report higher rates of dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, morning fatigue, and pain interference. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Clinicians need to assess common and distinct risk factors for CIV and chemotherapy-induced nausea.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The influence of adherence to a planetary health diet (PHD) proposed by the EAT-Lancet Commission on cardiovascular disease (CVD) is inconclusive. Besides, whether genetic susceptibility to CVD can modify the association of PHD with CVD remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association between adherence to PHD and CVD, and to evaluate the interaction between PHD and genetic predisposition to CVD. METHODS: This study included 114,165 participants who completed at least two 24-hour dietary recalls and were initially free of cardiovascular disease from the UK biobank. PHD score was calculated to assess adherence to PHD. Genetic risk was evaluated using the polygenic risk score. Incidence of total CVD, ischemic heart disease (IHD), atrial fibrillation (AF), heart failure (HF), and stroke were identified via electronic health records. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 9.9 years, 10,071 (8.8%) incident CVD cases were documented. Compared to participants with the lowest adherence to PHD, HRs (95% CIs) for total CVD, IHD, AF, HF, and stroke among those with the highest adherence were 0.79 (0.74, 0.84), 0.73 (0.67, 0.79), 0.90 (0.82, 0.99), 0.69 (0.59, 0.82), and 0.88 (0.75, 1.04), respectively. No significant interaction between genetic risk of CVD and PHD was observed. Participants with high genetic risk and low PHD score, as compared with those with low genetic risk and high PHD score, had a 48% (95% CI, 40%, 56%) higher risk of CVD. The population-attributable risk (95% CI) of CVD for poor adherence to PHD ranged from 8.79% (5.36%, 12.51%) to 14.00% (9.00%, 18.88%). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that higher adherence to PHD was associated with lower risks of total CVD, IHD, AF, and HF in populations across all genetic risk categories.

The ultrafine cellular structure promotes the extraordinary mechanical performance of metals manufactured by laser powder-bed-fusion (L-PBF). An in-depth understanding of the mechanisms governing the thermal stability of such structures is crucial for designing reliable L-PBF components for high-temperature applications. Here, characterizations and 3D discrete dislocation dynamics simulations are performed to comprehensively understand the evolution of cellular structures in 316L stainless steel during annealing. The dominance of screw-type dislocation dipoles in the dislocation cells is reported. However, the majority of dislocations in sub-grain boundaries (SGBs) are geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) with varying types. The disparity in dislocation types can be attributed to the variation in local stacking fault energy (SFE) arising from chemical heterogeneity. The presence of screw-type dislocations facilitates the unpinning of dislocations from dislocation cells/SGBs, resulting in a high dislocation mobility. In contrast, the migration of SGBs with dominating edge-type GNDs requires collaborative motion of dislocations, leading to a sluggish migration rate and an enhanced thermal stability. This work emphasizes the significant role of dislocation type in the thermal stability of cellular structures. Furthermore, it sheds light on how to locally tune dislocation structures with desired dislocation types by adjusting local chemistry-dependent SFE and heat treatment.

ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), characterized by clinical sub-phenotypes such as emphysema (E) and chronic bronchitis (CB), is associated with a greater risk of lung cancer (LC). This study aimed to assess the expression patterns of circRNA and their potential functional involvement in LC patients with COPD. A circRNA microarray was used to characterize differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs) profiles. A total of 176, 240, 163, and 243 DEcircRNAs were identified in comparisons between CB vs. LC patients (Con), E vs. Con, E vs. CB, and CBE vs. Con, respectively. DEcircRNAs in all comparison groups were primarily associated with immune-related GO terms and were also enriched in immune and inflammatory pathways. In total, 49 DEcircRNAs were significantly correlated with the infiltration of multiple immune cells. Among them, hsa-MROH9_0001 and hsa-RP11-35J10_0013 were positively and negatively correlated with plasma cells and T-cell CD4 memory resting cells, respectively; these two DEcircRNA-sponged miRNAs have good diagnostic performance. WGCNA identified six key circRNAs associated with CB progression. The expression patterns of hsa-MROH9_0001 and circRNA_21729 in E and CB groups were confirmed by RT-qPCR. In conclusion, we reported circRNA profiles and the findings demonstrated that hsa-MROH9_0001 and circRNA_21729 may be potential therapeutic targets for LC with COPD.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the non-inferiority of ultrasound-guided rhomboid intercostal and subserratus plane (RISS) block compared to thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) in postoperative analgesia for thoracoscopic surgeries. METHODS: This study consecutively enrolled 50 patients undergoing elective thoracoscopic surgery. Following general anesthesia, the RISS group received a unilateral block with 40 mL of 0.25% ropivacaine, while the TPVB group received with 30 mL of 0.33% ropivacaine. The primary outcome measure was the 24-hour postoperative resting VAS score. Secondary outcome measures included nerve block operation time for two groups, postoperative 1, 2, 4, 8, 48-hour resting VAS scores, and different time points coughing VAS scores, time to first postoperative ambulation, total intravenous analgesic consumption at different time points postoperatively, complications related to the block. RESULTS: There were no significant statistical differences between the two groups in terms of postoperative rest and cough VAS scores at each time (P>0.05), and the mean difference in rest VAS scores did not exceed the non-inferiority margin in 95% CI. There were no significant differences in total intraoperative and postoperative analgesic consumption at different time points (P>0.05), and no significant differences in time to first postoperative ambulation (P>0.05). Compared to the TPVB group, the RISS group had a shorter nerve block operation time (259.43±30.11 vs. 335.23±30.96 s, P<0.001) and fewer instances of intraoperative hypotension (two vs. seven cases, P=0.022), bleeding at the puncture site, pneumothorax, and arrhythmia. CONCLUSIONS: In thoracoscopic surgeries, the postoperative analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided RISS block is not inferior to TPVB. Compared to TPVB, RISS block is simpler, quicker, and associated with fewer puncture-related complications.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are pivotal regulators of gene expression and are involved in biological processes spanning from early developmental stages to the intricate process of aging. Extensive research has underscored the fundamental role of miRNAs in orchestrating eukaryotic development, with disruptions in miRNA biogenesis resulting in early lethality. Moreover, perturbations in miRNA function have been implicated in the aging process, particularly in model organisms such as nematodes and flies. miRNAs tend to be clustered in vertebrate genomes, finely modulating an array of biological pathways through clustering within a single transcript. Although extensive research of their developmental roles has been conducted, the potential implications of miRNA clusters in regulating aging remain largely unclear. In this review, we use the Mir-23-27-24 cluster as a paradigm, shedding light on the nuanced physiological functions of miRNA clusters during embryonic development and exploring their potential involvement in the aging process. Moreover, we advocate further research into the intricate interplay among miRNA clusters, particularly the Mir-23-27-24 cluster, in shaping the regulatory landscape of aging.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acute abdominal conditions during pregnancy are significant risks to maternal and fetal health, necessitating timely diagnosis and intervention. The choice of surgical approach is a major concern for obstetricians. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the TU-LESS procedure for acute abdomen in late pregnancy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 12 patients who underwent TU-LESS for acute abdominal conditions in the third trimester from 2020 to 2023. We reviewed medical records for clinical characteristics, surgical interventions, postoperative complications, and pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: The study included patients with a median age of 27 (range 20-35) and a BMI of 24.33 kg/m2 (range 21.34-31.96). The median gestational age at surgery was 30 weeks (range, 28 + 3-32 + 4 weeks), with surgeries lasting an average of 60 min (range, 30-163 min). Blood loss was 2-20 mL, and the median hospital stay post-surgery was 6 days (range, 2-16 days). There were no significant complications. The median time to delivery after TU-LESS was 56 days (range, 26-66 days), resulting in 8 full-term deliveries, 2 preterm cesareans, and 2 preterm vaginal deliveries. All newborns were healthy, with no fetal losses or neonatal deaths. CONCLUSION: TU-LESS, performed by experienced obstetricians and gynecologists with proper preoperative preparation, is safe and effective for managing acute abdomen in late pregnancy, without the need to delay surgery due to gestational age.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented impact on global mental health and well-being, including across the Asia-Pacific. Efforts to mitigate virus spread led to far-reaching disruption in the delivery of health and social services. In response, there was a rapid shift to the use of digital mental health (DMH) approaches. Though these technologies helped to improve access to care for many, there was also substantial risk of access barriers leading to increased inequities in access to mental health care, particularly among at-risk and equity-deserving populations. The objective of this study was to conduct a needs assessment and identify priorities related to equitable DMH access among at-risk and equity-deserving populations in the Asia Pacific region during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study consisted of a modified Delphi consensus methodology including two rounds of online surveys and online consultations with stakeholders from across the region. Study participants included policy makers, clinicians and service providers, and people with lived experience of mental health conditions. Results demonstrate that vulnerabilities to negative mental health impacts and access barriers were compounded during the pandemic. Access barriers included a lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate DMH options, low mental health literacy and poor access to technological infrastructure and devices, low levels of awareness and trust of DMH options, and lack of policies and guidelines to support effective and equitable delivery of DMH. Recommendations to improve equitable access include ensuring that diverse people with lived experience are engaged in research, co-design and policy development, the development and implementation of evidence-based and equity-informed guidelines and frameworks, clear communication about DMH evidence and availability, and the integration of DMH into broader health systems. Study results can inform the development and implementation of equitable DMH as its use becomes more widespread across health systems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer, a global health concern, impacts predominantly men, particularly in Eastern Asia. Lymph node metastasis (LNM) significantly influences prognosis, and current imaging methods exhibit limitations in accurate detection. The integration of radiomics, an artificial intelligence (AI) driven approach in medical imaging, offers a transformative potential. This meta-analysis evaluates existing evidence on the accuracy of radiomics models for predicting LNM in esophageal cancer. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science for English-language studies up to November 16, 2023. Inclusion criteria focused on preoperatively diagnosed esophageal cancer patients with radiomics predicting LNM before treatment. Exclusion criteria were applied, including non-English studies and those lacking sufficient data or separate validation cohorts. Data extraction encompassed study characteristics and radiomics technical details. Quality assessment employed modified Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) and Radiomics Quality Score (RQS) tools. Statistical analysis involved random-effects models for pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC). Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed using Deek's test and funnel plots. Analysis was performed using Stata version 17.0 and meta-DiSc. RESULTS: Out of 426 initially identified citations, nine studies met inclusion criteria, encompassing 719 patients. These retrospective studies utilized CT, PET, and MRI imaging modalities, predominantly conducted in China. Two studies employed deep learning-based radiomics. Quality assessment revealed acceptable QUADAS-2 scores. RQS scores ranged from 9 to 14, averaging 12.78. The diagnostic meta-analysis yielded a pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of 0.72, 0.76, and 0.74, respectively, representing fair diagnostic performance. Meta-regression identified the use of combined models as a significant contributor to heterogeneity (p-value = 0.05). Other factors, such as sample size (> 75) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) usage for feature extraction, showed potential influence but lacked statistical significance (0.05 < p-value < 0.10). Publication bias was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Radiomics shows potential for predicting LNM in esophageal cancer, with a moderate diagnostic performance. Standardized approaches, ongoing research, and prospective validation studies are crucial for realizing its clinical applicability.

ABSTRACT

We present the new concept of photonic alloy as a nonperiodic topological material. By mixing nonmagnetized and magnetized rods in a nonperiodic 2D photonic crystal configuration, we realized photonic alloys in the microwave regime. Our experimental findings reveal that the photonic alloy sustains nonreciprocal chiral edge states even at very low concentration of magnetized rods. The nontrivial topology and the associated edge states of these nonperiodic systems can be characterized by the winding of the reflection phase. Our results indicate that the threshold concentrations for the investigated system within the first nontrivial band gap to exhibit topological behavior approach zero in the thermodynamic limit for substitutional alloys, while the threshold remains nonzero for interstitial alloys. At low concentration, the system exhibits an inhomogeneous structure characterized by isolated patches of nonpercolating magnetic domains that are spaced far apart within a topologically trivial photonic crystal. Surprisingly, the system manifests chiral edge states despite a local breakdown of time-reversal symmetry rather than a global one. Photonic alloys represent a new category of disordered topological materials, offering exciting opportunities for exploring topological materials with adjustable gaps.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) provide key innate immune mechanisms, and studies have shown innate immunity and adaptive immunity are directly linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathology. However, limited research has been conducted on NETs in the context of PD. Methods: A differential analysis was implemented to acquire differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between PD and control as well as between high- and low-score groups determined by a gene set variation analysis (GSVA). Then, the genes within the critical module, obtained through a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), were intersected with the DEGs to identify the overlapping genes. Then, five kinds of algorithms in the protein-protein interaction (PPI) were performed to identify potential biomarkers. Subsequently, a nomogram for forecasting PD probability was created. An enrichment analysis and an immune infiltration analysis were performed on the identified biomarkers. qRT-PCR was performed to validate the expression trends of three biomarkers. Results: We revealed 798 DEGs between PD and control groups as well as 168 DEGs between high- and low-score groups obtained by differential analyses. The pink module containing 926 genes was identified as the critical module. According to the intersection of these gene sets, a total of 43 overlapping genes were screened out. Furthermore, GPR78, CADM3, and CACNA1E were confirmed as biomarkers. Moreover, we found that biomarkers mainly participated in pathways, such as the 'hydrogen peroxide catabolic process', and 'cell cycle'; five kinds of differential immune cells between PD and control groups were identified. Finally, the qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated the up-regulation of GPR78, CADM3, and CACNA1E in the PD group. Discussion: Our study authenticated GPR78, CADM3, and CACNA1E as the biomarkers associated with PD. These findings provide an original reference for the diagnosis and treatment of PD.
