ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Physical inactivity is considered an important risk factor for osteoporosis, however, some athletes performing extremely high training volumes can also develop bone mass loss. Moreover, the effect of total body mass or body surface area on bone mineral density remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the absolute bone mineral density and bone mineral density adjusted to body surface area between amateur triathletes and nonactive women. METHODS: Forty-two healthy women (23 amateur triathletes and 19 nonactive individuals) were evaluated for body composition using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry system. RESULTS: Compared to nonactive women, amateur triathletes exhibited lower body mass index (p < 0.001), lower bone mineral density (p < 0.001), and body surface area (p < 0.001). However, bone mineral density adjusted by body surface area in the triathletes was higher than in the nonactive women (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: These findings showed that amateur triathles presented lower absolute bone mineral density, but higher bone mineral density adjusted to body surface area. Future studies are recommended to identify if the higher bone mineral density adjusted to body surface area are associated with a lower bone fragility.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the academic performance of undergraduate students in physical education who studied exercise physiology before and after studying human physiology and investigate students' perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology courses. METHODS: This study included 311 undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree in physical education. Participants were divided into two groups: those who had previously attended and completed the human physiology course (group 1, n = 212, 68.2%) and those who had not previously attended or had attended but failed the human physiology course (group 2, n = 99, 31.8%). The prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated using a Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator. The second aim comprised 67 students with bachelor's degrees in physical education who completed an electronic questionnaire about their perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology curriculum. RESULTS: Compared with those who attended human physiology and passed, those who had not previously attended or had attended but failed the human physiology course have a higher PR of 2.37 (95% CI, 1.68-3.34) for failing exercise physiology. Regarding the students' perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology courses, most students reported that they were challenging (58.2% and 64.2%, respectively), but they also recognized the importance of these courses for professional practice (59.7% and 85.1%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Human physiology should be considered a prerequisite for an undergraduate course leading to a bachelor's degree in physical education. Furthermore, students considered human physiology and exercise physiology courses important yet challenging. Therefore, continuous student assessment is vital for improving the teaching-learning process.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The literature shows that the prevalence of dietary supplements is high and guidance by a nutritionist or specialized professional is low in professional triathletes. It is reasonable to assume that in recreational triathletes, the prevalence of dietary supplements will also be high and that a significant portion of the sampled population will use supplements without any guidance from a qualified professional. The present study investigated dietary supplement use among Brazilian male recreational triathletes. METHODS: A total of 724 Brazilian male recreational triathletes (age: 38.00 [10.00] years and body mass index: 24.16 [3.02] kg/m2) took part in this study. All participants answered an online questionnaire containing questions about their demographic characteristics and the nutritional aspects of their diet. RESULTS: The results showed that ~ 90% (n = 653) of the interviewed participants reported using at least one dietary supplement. Surprisingly, ~ 25% did not receive supplement advice from a professional nutritionist. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of dietary supplements in male recreational triathletes was high, and a substantial part of the sample did not receive professional recommendations. This situation is worrisome because dietary supplements should be prescribed by a professional nutritionist. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Our results suggest the need for an appropriate attitude and guidance by health professionals who deal with this population, especially nutritionists, to promote safe practices.

Vertical jump is an important skill that influences volleyball performance. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between vertical jump performance and birth quartile of Brazilian male youth volleyball players. We calculated chi-square goodness-of-fit tests to compare the athletes' birthdate distributions in quarters of their birth years (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) according to player age categories (U17, U18, U19, and U21). We calculated one-way ANOVAs to compare spike jump and block jump heights of players born in different quarters of the same year. Overall, we found a relative age effect (i.e., more players with birth dates early in the birth year) in U17 (p < .001), U18 (p < .001), U19 (p < .001), and U21 (p = .04). Regarding vertical jump performance, U18 athletes born in Q2 reached higher spike jump heights (p = .006) and block jump heights (p = .002) than athletes born in Q4, and U19 athletes born in Q1 reached higher block jump heights than athletes born in Q3 (p = .049). There were no significant differences in vertical jump performance across birth quartiles among U17 and U21 athletes. Thus, a relative age effect was present in all age categories but not always reflected in vertical jump performance. Volleyball coaches and policymakers are still advised to employ strategies to ensure fairer opportunities for players born later in the year of their eligibility dates, as we found RAE to be sometimes, but not always, related to higher spike or block jump heights even among these older adolescents and young adult athletes.

ABSTRACT

9H- and 7H-2,6-Diaminopurine (26DAP) photoinduced events in vacuum were studied at the MS-CASPT2/cc-pVDZ level of theory. The S1 1 (ππ* La ) state is initially populated evolving barrierless towards its minimum energy structure, from where two photochemical events can take place in both tautomers. The first is the return of the electronic population to the ground state via the C6 conical intersection (CI-C6). The second involves an internal conversion to the ground through the C2 conical intersection (CI-C2). According to our geodesic interpolated paths connecting the critical structures, the second route is less favorable in both tautomers, due to the presence of high energy barriers. Our calculations suggest a competition between fluorescence and ultrafast relaxation to the electronic ground state via internal conversion process. Based on our calculated potential energy surfaces and experimental excited state lifetimes from the literature, we can infer that the 7H- must have a greater fluorescence yield than the 9H-tautomer. We also explored the triplet state population mechanisms on the 7H-26DAP to understand their long-lived components observed experimentally.

ABSTRACT

A total of 1.67 million breast cancer cases per year are reported worldwide. Of these, 5%-10% are caused by inherited mutations. Phenocopy is a rare phenomenon, with only a few cases reported in the literature. In phenocopies, phenotypes identical to those with genetic origin occur because of environmental factors rather than familial mutations. We describe a case of phenocopy in a 44-year-old female patient with triple-negative breast cancer. The mother and sister wee heterozygous for c.1813delA, p.Ile605TyrfsTer9 in BRCA2 . The patient underwent genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 and exome sequencing. Familial or other cancer variants were not detected. The most accepted phenocopy theory is that patients without genetic variants but who are carriers of these mutations undergo cellular changes due to environmental factors, increasing the risk of breast cancer. Therefore, the detection of phenocopy in patients with breast cancer is important in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

We examined the effect of amount of muscle mass involved in moderate-intensity continuous physical exercise on executive function. To this end, fifty-five participants completed two acute physical exercise sessions on an airbike ergometer using the upper and lower limbs simultaneously and only the upper limbs, and a resting control session in a randomized order. The physical exercise session lasted 30 min and was performed at moderate intensity (between 64 %-76 % of maximal heart rate evaluated in graded maximal exercise testing). Participants took the Stroop test (congruent and incongruent trials) before and after the sessions to assess executive performance. For the congruent trial, both physical exercise interventions improved executive function performance (pre vs. post, p-value = 0.002 and 0.003 for physical exercise with upper limbs and physical exercise with upper and lower limbs, respectively). Furthermore, executive function performance was higher after the physical exercise interventions than after the control session (p-value = 0.002 and 0.004 for physical exercise with upper limbs and physical exercise with upper and lower limbs, respectively). For the incongruent trial, both physical exercise interventions also improved executive function performance (pre vs. post, p-value < 0.001 for physical exercise with upper limbs and physical exercise with upper and lower limbs, respectively). However, there were no significant differences after both physical exercise interventions and resting control session (p-value = 0.175). Executive function (congruent trial) was positively impacted by acute aerobic physical exercise regardless of the amount of muscle mass involved (upper limbs or upper plus lower limbs). Therefore, we recommend aerobic physical exercise with less or more muscle mass involved to improve cognitive function.

ABSTRACT

Our primary objective in this study was to investigate the offensive strategies employed in the attack phase of men's volleyball, specifically focusing on side-out as stratified by the type of confrontation that was determined by the opponent's team performance. We analyzed 5524 attacking actions during 22 games of the 12 teams that participated in the Volleyball Men's Superliga (season 2021-2022). Based on their final rankings in the championship, we classified these teams into three tiers: high-performance, intermediate-performance, and low-performance. Subsequently, we examined the dynamics of these matches using Social Network Analysis. We found that the opponent teams' performance levels did not influence the game dynamics. Notably, the eigenvector values were prominently higher for Attack Zones 2 and 4, wherein the middle-blocker jumped to attack close to the setter across all networks. Thus, setters opted for traditional and low-risk strategies to minimize errors, disregarding available information about the skill level of the opposing team, making their offensive tactics predictable.

ABSTRACT

Little is known about the performance, carcass, and meat traits of locally adapted cattle in Brazil. This study aimed to compare the growth, slaughter, and carcass traits as well as meat quality of two local breeds (Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro) with the Nelore breed. Fifteen 30-month-old steers of each breed were weighted (Curraleiro Pé-Duro = 264.80 kg; Nelore = 346.80 kg; Pantaneiro = 316.20 kg) and raised in a feedlot condition for 112 days, with measurements to assess growth and slaughter, visual and carcass and meat traits. Data were submitted to variance and multivariate analyses. Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro had similar Gluteus medius depths. Pantaneiro and Curraleiro Pé-Duro were superior for leg compactness index (P < 0.05) and had higher eye muscle area than Nelore (P < 0.05). Although there was no difference in daily weight gain and slaughter weight between breeds, Curraleiro Pé-Duro had a lower initial weight (264.80 kg) when compared to Nelore (346.80 kg; P < 0.05). Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro deposited more fat than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05), while Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro had more muscle than Nelore (P < 0.05), which also had more bone and a higher percentage of second-quality cuts (P < 0.05). Meat from Nelore also showed lower succulence than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05) and higher shear force than the other breeds (P < 0.05). Pantaneiro's meat had the most capacity to retain water (P < 0.05), lower shear force (P < 0.05), and was more succulent (P < 0.05) when compared to the other breeds. Multivariate analysis showed that Pantaneiro, Curraleiro Pé-Duro, and Nelore breeds can be considered distinct in growth, carcass, and meat traits, with the local breeds showing superior meat traits. The local breeds Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro presented characteristics similar or better to those of the Nelore, proving to be animals with great productive potential and generate high meat quality under feedlot conditions.

ABSTRACT

A vacina constitui um dos principais métodos de prevenção contra doenças. Em 1973, o Brasil criou o Programa Nacional de Imunizações a fim de promover a imunização gratuita para a população, o que mais tarde tornou o país em referência mundial em vacinação. No entanto, a recusa vacinal ainda é um grande problema de saúde pública, sendo o movimento antivacina um dos destaques dessa realidade. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste artigo é avaliar como o movimento antivacina impacta na saúde pública no Brasil através da diminuição da cobertura vacinal. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de metodologia mista, com uma primeira etapa qualitativa, composta de uma revisão integrativa nas plataformas PubMed, LILACS e SciELO, no período de 2010 a 2020, e uma pesquisa documental em portais de movimentos antivacina; e uma segunda etapa quantitativa, em que foi realizado um estudo epidemiológico do tipo ecológico, com consulta nas bases eletrônicas do Datasus e no Sistema de Informações do Programa Nacional de Imunizações (SI-PNI), no período de 2010 a 2022. No período investigado, apenas em 2015 o Brasil alcançou a meta preconizada de cobertura vacinal, diferentemente dos anos seguintes, que apresentaram oscilações preocupantes. As publicações apresentam argumentos utilizados pelos grupos antivacina, evidenciados entre 2015 e 2019, período em que os dados de cobertura vacinal oscilaram. Assim, conclui-se que a ascensão do movimento antivacina é um dos fatores que influenciaram na queda da vacinação no Brasil, a exemplo do sarampo e da febre amarela.


The vaccine is one of the main methods of preventing diseases. Since 1973, Brazil created the National Immunization Program to ensure free immunization to the population, which later made the country a world reference in vaccination. However, vaccine refusal is still a great public health issue, and the anti-vaccine movement stand out in this reality. Thus, the purpose of this article is to evaluate how the anti-vaccine movement affects public health in Brazil with vaccination coverage reduction. This is a mixed methodology study, with first a qualitative step, composed of an integrative review in the platforms PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO, in the period from 2010 to 2020,and a documental research in portals of anti-vaccination movements; and a second quantitative step, where an epidemiological study of the ecological type was carried out, with consultation in the electronic databases of DATASUS and in the Information System of the National Immunization Program (SI-PNI) in the period of 2010 to 2022. In the investigative period, only in 2015 Brazil managed to reach the recommended vaccination coverage goal, unlike in the following years, which showed worrying fluctuations. The publications summarize arguments used by the anti-vaccination groups, evidenced between 2015 and 2019, a period in which the vaccination coverage data fluctuated. Therefore, it is clear that the rise of the anti-vaccination movement is a factor that influenced the drop in vaccination numbers in Brazil, with yellow fever and measles as examples.


La vacuna es uno de los principales métodos de prevención de enfermedades. En 1973, Brasil creó el Programa Nacional de Inmunización con el fin de promover la inmunización gratuita para la población, lo que luego convirtió al país en un referente mundial en vacunación. Sin embargo, la negativa de la vacuna sigue siendo un problema importante en la salud pública, y el movimiento antivacunas es uno de los aspectos más destacados de esta realidad. Así, el objetivo de este artículo es evaluar cómo el movimiento antivacunas impacta en la salud pública en Brasil mediante la disminución de la cobertura de vacunación. Se trata de un estudio epidemiológico mixto, con una primera etapa cualitativa, consistente en una revisión integradora en las plataformas PubMed, Lilacs y SciELO, en el período de 2010 a 2020, y una investigación documental en portales de movimientos antivacunas; y una segunda etapa cuantitativa, en la que se realizó un estudio epidemiológico de tipo ecológico, con consulta en las bases de datos electrónicas de DATASUS y en el Sistema de Información del Programa Nacional de Inmunización (SI-PNI), en el período de 2010 a 2022. Entre eses años, solo el año 2015 logró alcanzar la meta recomendada, a diferencia de los años siguientes, que mostraron fluctuaciones preocupantes en la cobertura de vacunación. Las publicaciones mostraron los argumentos utilizados por los grupos antivacina, evidenciados entre 2015 y 2019, período en que los datos de cobertura de la vacuna fluctuaron. Así, se concluye que la asunción del movimiento antivacunación es uno de los factores que influye en la caída de la vacunación en Brasil, como en el sarampión y la fiebre amarilla.

ABSTRACT

Asthma is an important health concern in Latin America (LA) where it is associated with variable prevalence and disease burden between countries. High prevalence and morbidity have been observed in some regions, particularly marginalized urban populations. Research over the past 10 years from LA has shown that childhood disease is primarily non-atopic. The attenuation of atopy may be explained by enhanced immune regulation induced by intense exposures to environmental factors such as childhood infections and poor environmental conditions of the urban poor. Non-atopic symptoms are associated with environmental and lifestyle factors including poor living conditions, respiratory infections, psychosocial stress, obesity, and a diet of highly processed foods. Ancestry (particularly African) and genetic factors increase asthma risk, and some of these factors may be specific to LA settings. Asthma in LA tends to be poorly controlled and depends on access to health care and medications. There is a need to improve management and access to medication through primary health care. Future research should consider the heterogeneity of asthma to identify relevant endotypes and underlying causes. The outcome of such research will need to focus on implementable strategies relevant to populations living in resource-poor settings where the disease burden is greatest.

The present research objective was to analyze the offensive phase from Complex I in high-level male volleyball teams in a macro- and micro-level view, through the inter e intra-team variability analysis of eight best teams of the 2018 Men's Volleyball World Championship over the social network analysis and eigenvector centrality. The sample consisted of 22 matches and 2,743 offensive actions, resulting in 8 sub-networks with 368 nodes and 6221 edges. The results showed from macro view the variables that presented highest centrality values were Attack Zone 4 (range 0.56-0.90), Attack Tempo 2 (0.65-0.87), Power Attack (0.62-0.94), No Touch Block (0.61-1), Attack Effect Continuity (0.59-0.94), and Middle Blocker Centralized (0.60-0.95). In a micro view, Reception Effect, Play Position, Reception Zone, and Block Composition showed high variability in each sub-network. The intra- and inter-team variability presented the importance of to respect each team idiosyncrasies and to consider the different approaches to the game and success.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, undergraduate students were exposed to symptoms of psychological suffering during remote classes. Therefore, it is important to investigate the factors that may be generated and be related to such outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between fear of COVID-19, depression, anxiety, and related factors in undergraduate students during remote classes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 218 undergraduate students (60.6% women and 39.4% men). Students answered a self-administered online questionnaire designed to gather personal information, pandemic exposure, physical activity level, fear of COVID-19 using the 'Fear of COVID-19 Scale', symptoms of depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and anxiety using General Anxiety Disorder-7. RESULTS: Undergraduate students had a high prevalence of depression and anxiety (83.0% and 76.1%, respectively) but a low prevalence of fear of COVID-19 (28.9%) during remote classes. Multivariate analysis revealed that women who reported health status as neither good nor bad and who had lost a family member from COVID-19 had the highest levels of fear. For depression and anxiety, the main related factors found were female gender, bad health status, insufficiently active, and complete adherence to the restriction measures. CONCLUSION: These findings may be used to develop actions to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression among students, with interventions through physical activity programmes to improve mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Sufficient vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]) serum levels are associated with decreased asthma symptoms. Our aim was to investigate associations between vitamin D and atopy, asthma, asthma severity, and asthma phenotypes in Brazilian teenagers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 942 individuals (11-19 years old) engaged in an asthma cohort. The ISAAC questionnaire was employed to diagnosis asthma and asthma severity. Serum allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) was measured by ImmunoCap and serum 25(OH)D was measured by ELISA. We calculated the correlation between sIgE and 25(OH)D. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to assess associations of interest. RESULTS: We found that 25(OH)D deficiency was positively associated with atopy (OR 1.45, confidence interval [CI] 1.05-2.00) and high levels of this vitamin negatively correlated with sIgE to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (r = -0.11, p = 0.019). The average 25(OH)D serum level was 27.0 ± 9.5 ng/ml; 366 individuals (38.8%) had a sufficient level. There was no association between 25(OH)D and asthma, asthma severity or asthma phenotypes in the population. However, sex was a possible effect modifier of the association between vitamin D and asthma: insufficiency in asthmatic women (86%) was higher than in asthmatic men (42%), and there was an association between insufficient vitamin D levels and greater asthma risk only in women (OR = 3.06, 95% CI 1.16-8.07). CONCLUSION: We have shown that vitamin D deficiency was associated with greater risk of atopy in both sexes and vitamin D insufficiency was associated with asthma only in women. There was no association between vitamin D levels and asthma phenotypes or asthma severity.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that can cause total paralysis. Furthermore, poliomyelitis survivors may develop new signs and symptoms, including muscular weakness and fatigue, years after the acute phase of the disease, i.e., post-polio syndrome (PPS). Thus, the objective was to compare the functional exercise capacity during maximal and submaximal exercises among individuals with polio sequelae (without PPS diagnosis), PPS, and a control group. METHODS: Thirty individuals participated in three groups: a control group (CG, n = 10); a group of individuals with polio sequelae but without PPS diagnosis (PG, n = 10); and a PPS group (PPSG, n = 10). All participants underwent (i) a cardiopulmonary exercise test to determine their maximal oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]) and (ii) a series of functional field tests (i.e., walking test, sit-to-stand test, and stair climbing test). RESULTS: [Formula: see text]O2max was 30% lower in PPSG than in CG and PG. Regarding functional field tests, walking and stair climbing test performances were significantly different among all groups. The PPSG sit-to-stand performance was lower than CG. CONCLUSION: The sequelae of paralytic poliomyelitis impair functional exercise capacity obtained from maximal and submaximal tests, especially in patients with PPS. Furthermore, submaximal variables appear to be more negatively impacted than maximal variables.

ABSTRACT

Volleyball is a popular sport in Brazil, and the relative age effect (RAE) is known to occur within it; but less is known of how RAE relates to elite Brazilian volleyball players' age, sex, and competitive levels. We aimed to investigate RAE prevalence with data from two seasons of play among players in the Superliga A (2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons), and Superliga B (2021 and 2022 seasons) made available from the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV), the club's official website, or direct consultation with the CBV. After removing duplicate data, we grouped these 1,063 athletes by their dates of birth, sex, and competition level (Superliga A or B). We divided players' birth dates into quarters (Q1: January-March, Q2: April-June, Q3: July-September and Q4: October-December) and into semesters, and we performed chi-square (χ2) tests to investigate RAE prevalence according to the players' sex and competitive level. RAE was prevalent overall (χ2 = 33.198; p < .001), among males (χ2 = 24.48; p < .001) and females (χ2 = 11.23; p < .011). Regarding competition level, RAE was evident among males in both Superliga A (χ2 = 14.581; p = 0.002), and B (χ2 = 13.985; p = 0.003), and among females in Superliga B (χ2 = 9.204; p = 0.027), but not Superliga A (χ2 = 4.012; p = 0.26). Thus, the RAE phenomenon operated differently for male and female Brazilian volleyball players according to their competitive level. We discuss the implications of these findings.

INTRODUCTION: The bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease has been reported in the literature, suggesting that poor glycemic control is strongly associated with increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Therefore, this systematic review evaluated the level of knowledge of this bidirectional relationship among patients with diabetes. METHODS: This systematic review (protocol CRD42018117902) was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The following databases were considered: Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Search strategy (April 05th , 2021) considered proper combination of keywords and eligibility criteria. The quality of studies was evaluated using the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS). RESULTS: Among the 328 records identified in the initial search, 24 studies were selected, considering a total of 8,693 patients. All studies used a cross-sectional design. Among the included studies, only five showed prevalence of knowledge higher than 50%, ranging from 5.8% to 75.9%. Interestingly, 58.0% of patients reported that they brush their teeth at least 1x/day, but only four studies reported that the dentist was the main source of information. In terms of methodology and result quality, just one study clearly showed all information evaluated by the AXIS tool. Most of studies did not report sample size calculations and did not used validated questionnaires to assess patient knowledge. CONCLUSION: The results show that less than half of people with diabetes have knowledge about their increased risk for periodontal disease, and often the dentist is not the main source of information to motivate them.

ABSTRACT A total of 1.67 million breast cancer cases per year are reported worldwide. Of these, 5%-10% are caused by inherited mutations. Phenocopy is a rare phenomenon, with only a few cases reported in the literature. In phenocopies, phenotypes identical to those with genetic origin occur because of environmental factors rather than familial mutations. We describe a case of phenocopy in a 44-year-old female patient with triple-negative breast cancer. The mother and sister wee heterozygous for c.1813delA, p.Ile605TyrfsTer9 in BRCA2 . The patient underwent genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 and exome sequencing. Familial or other cancer variants were not detected. The most accepted phenocopy theory is that patients without genetic variants but who are carriers of these mutations undergo cellular changes due to environmental factors, increasing the risk of breast cancer. Therefore, the detection of phenocopy in patients with breast cancer is important in clinical practice.
