ABSTRACT

Nanoparticles are being used in novel applications of the thermoplastics industry, including automotive parts, the sports industry and leisure and consumer goods, which can be produced nowadays through additive manufacturing. However, there is limited information on the health and safety aspects during the production of these new materials, mainly from recycled sources. This study covers the exposure assessment to nano- and micro-size particles emitted from the nanocomposites during the production of filaments for 3D printing through a compounding and extrusion pilot line using recycled (post-industrial) thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and recycled polyamide 12 (PA12), which have been also upcycled through reinforcement with iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), introducing matrix healing properties triggered by induction heating. The assessment protocol included near- and far-field measurements, considering the extruder as the primary emission source, and portable measuring devices for evaluating particulate emissions reaching the inhalable zone of the lab workers. A Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) study for the extrusion process line was defined along with a Failure Tree Analysis (FTA) process in which the process deviations, their sources and the relations between them were documented. FTA allowed the identification of events that should take place in parallel (simultaneously) or in series for the failure modes to take place and the respective corrective actions to be proposed (additional to the existing control measures).

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic instigated massive production of critical medical supplies and personal protective equipment. Injection moulding (IM) is considered the most prominent thermoplastic part manufacturing technique, offering the use of a large variety of feedstocks and rapid production capacity. Within the context of the European Commission-funded imPURE project, the benefits of IM have been exploited in repurposed IM lines to accommodate the use of nanocomposites and introduce the unique properties of nanomaterials. However, these amendments in the manufacturing lines highlighted the need for targeted and thorough occupational risk analysis due to the potential exposure of workers to airborne nanomaterials and fumes, as well as the introduction of additional occupational hazards. In this work, a safety-oriented failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) was implemented to evaluate the main hazards in repurposed IM lines using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) matrix and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as additives. Twenty-eight failure modes were identified, with the upper quartile including the seven failure modes presenting the highest risk priority numbers (RPN), signifying a need for immediate control action. Additionally, a nanosafety control-banding tool allowed hazard classification and the identification of control actions required for mitigation of occupation risks due to the released airborne silver nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT

Despite the wide usage of magnetic nanoparticles, it remains challenging to synthesise particles with properties that exploit each application's full potential. Time consuming experimental procedures and particle analysis hinder process development, which is commonly constrained to a handful of experiments without considering particle formation kinetics, reproducibility and scalability. Flow reactors are known for their potential of large-scale production and high-throughput screening of process parameters. These advantages, however, have not been utilised for magnetic nanoparticle synthesis where particle characterisation is performed, with a few exceptions, post-synthesis. To overcome this bottleneck, we developed a highly sensitive magnetometer for flow reactors to characterise magnetic nanoparticles in solution in-line and in real-time using alternating current susceptometry. This flow magnetometer enriches the flow-chemistry toolbox by facilitating continuous quality control and high-throughput screening of magnetic nanoparticle syntheses. The sensitivity required to monitor magnetic nanoparticle syntheses at the typically low concentrations (<100 mM of Fe) was achieved by comparing the signals induced in the sample and reference cell, each of which contained near-identical pairs of induction and pick-up coils. The reference cell was filled only with air, whereas the sample cell was a flow cell allowing sample solution to pass through. Balancing the flow and reference cell impedance with a newly developed electronic circuit was pivotal for the magnetometer's sensitivity. To showcase its potential, the flow magnetometer was used to monitor two iron oxide nanoparticle syntheses with well-known particle formation kinetics, i.e., co-precipitation syntheses with sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide as base, which have been previously studied via synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The flow magnetometer facilitated batch (on-line) and flow (in-line) synthesis monitoring, providing new insights into the particle formation kinetics as well as, effect of temperature and pH. The compact lab-scale flow device presented here, opens up new possibilities for magnetic nanoparticle synthesis and manufacturing, including 1) early stage reaction characterisation 2) process monitoring and control and 3) high-throughput screening in combination with flow reactors.

ABSTRACT

Over the past few decades, life cycle assessment (LCA) has been established as a critical tool for the evaluation of the environmental burdens of chemical processes and materials cycles. The increasing amount of plastic solid waste (PSW) in landfills has raised serious concern worldwide for the most effective treatment. Thermochemical post-treatment processes, such as pyrolysis, seem to be the most appropriate method to treat this type of waste in an effective manner. This is because such processes lead to the production of useful chemicals, or hydrocarbon oil of high calorific value (i.e. bio-oil in the case of pyrolysis). LCA appears to be the most appropriate tool for the process design from an environmental context. However, addressed limitations including initial assumptions, functional unit and system boundaries, as well as lack of regional database and exclusion of socio-economic aspects, may hinder the final decision. This review aims to address the benefits of pyrolysis as a method for PSW treatment and raise the limitations and gaps of conducted research via an environmental standpoint.
