ABSTRACT

This study aimed to elucidate the cadmium (Cd) concentration and transport characteristics of Pueraria thornsonii in farmland with different Cd pollution degrees, so as to provide a reference basis for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated farmland. The multi-point experiments in farmland with different Cd pollution degrees[ω(Cd) 0.32-38.08 mg·kg-1] were conducted, and the biomass (dry weight), Cd content, accumulation, concentration, and transport of Cd in P. thornsonii tissues under the main growing period were assessed. According to the results, for P. thornsonii, the tuber dry weight ranged from 5.04 to 11.98 t·hm-2, biomass ranged from 13.21 to 29.07 t·hm-2, and Cd accumulation ranged from 15.74 to 106.03 g·hm-2in the study area. The pattern of Cd uptake by P. thornsonii showed that the main vine>leaf>lateral branches>basal part of sti>tuber. The Cd content in P. thornsonii tissues considerably increased with soil Cd content (P<0.05), whereas the biomass decreased significantly (P<0.05). The Cd concentration and transport factor of aboveground parts in P. thornsonii showed a trend of initially falling, then increasing and decreasing again, whereas the Cd enrichment and transport coefficient of tubers gradually decreased. Correlation analysis revealed that the amount of Cd in the soil was a major predictor of Cd accumulation in P. thornsonii. Under light to moderate Cd contamination, the commercial portion of P. thornsonii (arrowroot)[ω(Cd) 0.03-0.22 mg·kg-1] was less than the standard limit for medicinal plants (≤ 0.30 mg·kg-1). In P. thornsonii from moderately contaminated areas, the Cd concentration and transport factor of aboveground parts were 2.43-7.97 and 3.02-9.81, respectively. This indicates that P. thornsonii is a prospective plant ideal for remediating Cd-contaminated soil because of its high capacity to transfer and enrich Cd.

ABSTRACT

Efficient and quick removal of radioactive Cs+ from wastewater is significant for the safe use of nuclear energy and human health. A novel adsorbent K1.93Ti0.22Sn3S6.43 (KTSS) was developed for Cs+ removal from complex natural water systems. The working mechanism of KTSS for removing Cs+ was the synergistic effect of ion exchange and the Cs⋯S binding, which was proved by several characterization techniques. KTSS showed ultrafast kinetics for Cs+ adsorption within 1 min with a removal rate of 99%. Meanwhile, KTSS exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of 450.12 mg/g than many other adsorbents to remove Cs+ and possessed excellent chemical stability in a wide pH range of 3-12. Thanks to the natural affinity arising from the S2- ligands, KTSS displayed excellent selectivity for Cs+ even in different complex water systems. The separation factors between Cs+ and the coexisting ions of Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ were ranged from 408.61 to 7448.20. Fortunately, by eluting with NaNO3 the adsorbent could realize the green regeneration and cyclic utilization. Furthermore, it was found that KTSS had tremendous advantages in the removal of Cs+ in comparison with the other adsorbents. Consequently, it should be considered that KTSS obtained in this study has great potential in applying ultrafast and high-efficient removal of Cs+ from wastewater.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer is associated with a higher incidence among residents in high-altitude areas. Hypoxic environment at high altitudes inhibits the phagocytic and oxygen-dependent killing function of phagocytes, thereby increasing the inflammatory factors, inhibiting the body's innate immunity and increasing the risk of colon cancer. AIM: To examine the effect of minimally invasive surgery vs laparotomy in patients with colon cancer residing in high-altitude areas. METHODS: Ninety-two patients with colon cancer in our hospital from January 2019 to February 2021 were selected and divided into the minimally invasive surgery and laparotomy groups using the random number table method, with 46 patients in each group. Minimally invasive surgery was performed in the minimally invasive group and laparotomy in the laparotomy group. Operative conditions, inflammatory index pre- and post-surgery, immune function index and complication probability were measured. RESULTS: Operative duration was significantly longer and intraoperative blood loss and recovery time of gastrointestinal function were significantly less (all P < 0.05) in the minimally invasive group than in the laparotomy group. The number of lymph nodes dissected was not significantly different. Before surgery, there were no significant differences in serum C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α levels between the groups, whereas after surgery, the levels were significantly higher in the minimally invasive group (26.98 ± 6.91 mg/L, 146.38 ± 11.23 ng/mL and 83.51 ± 8.69 pg/mL vs 41.15 ± 8.39 mg/L, 186.79 ± 15.36 ng/mL and 110.65 ± 12.84 pg/mL, respectively, P < 0.05). Furthermore, before surgery, there were no significant differences in CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ levels between the groups, whereas after surgery, the levels decreased in both groups, being significantly higher in the minimally invasive group (55.61% ± 4.39%, 35.45% ± 3.67% and 1.30 ± 0.35 vs 49.68% ± 5.33%, 31.21% ± 3.25% and 1.13 ± 0.30, respectively, P < 0.05). Complication probability was significantly lower in the minimally invasive group (4.35% vs 17.39%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures reduce surgical trauma and alleviate the inflammatory response and immune dysfunction caused by invasive operation. It also shortens recovery time and reduces complication probability.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate epidemiological characteristics of measles cases and the influencing factors of transmission of measles among floating children in Shenzhen. Methods Descriptive study was conducted in data which were collected from the report system of statutory infectious diseases from 2016 to 2018 in Shenzhen. Case-control study was conducted between 89 cases and relative controls. Results A total of 108 measles cases in floating children were reported from 2016 to 2018, and the incidence trend showed a year-on-year decline( 2trend=68.35, P<0.001). Analysis showed that nosocomial exposure in 7 to 21 days ago(OR=7.80, 95% CI:3.51-17.35, P<0.001), having been to the crowded places(OR=3.37, 95% CI:1.52-7.47, P=0.002), having contact history of fever-rash patients(OR=4.57, 95% CI:1.41-14.84, P=0.007) were influencing factors of transmission of measles among floating children, and immunization at the prescribed time(OR=0.12, 95% CI:0.04-0.32, P<0.001) was a protective factor for measles. Conclusions Vaccination must be strengthened for floating children. Medical institutions should avoid becoming a key place for measles transmission, and need to strengthen health education.

ABSTRACT

The widespread use of lithium-ion batteries has led to continuously increasing demands for lithium. In order to recover lithium from geothermal water, a novel composite lithium ion-sieve was synthesized and applied in this work. The stability of the material was successfully solved by granulating using acid-alkali resistant polyvinyl chloride as a binder, and its adsorption performances were also improved by using polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) as a porogen to obtain a polyporous structure. When the developed material was applied for lithium separation from geothermal water, the adsorption capacity reached 12.84 mg/g at 328.15 K with an equilibrium time of about 12 h. The material can be well regenerated using 0.25 mol/L HCl to realize cycle use. The separation factors between Li+ and other co-existing ions were within the range of 273.58-521.28, and the attenuation of adsorption capacity after five cycles was no more than 2%. The high selectivity and reusability properties of the polyporous ion-sieve make the material a potential candidate for the selective separation and recovery of a low concentration of lithium from geothermal water.

ABSTRACT

A novel ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP)/ polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/ sodium alginate (SA) composite hydrogel (APS) was prepared for Cs+ removal and enrichment from radioactive wastewater. Batch experiments with the subject of AMP concentration, pH value, initial Cs+ concentration, contact time, temperature, competing ions were investigated. The results showed this APS hydrogel with high permeability and stability could effectively adsorb Cs+ at widely broad pH value range and low Cs+ concentration within a short time. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters indicated the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process, and the Lagergren pseudo-second order model was found to exhibit the best correlation with the adsorption results. Equilibrium data was better described by the Langmuir isotherm equation, and the maximum adsorption capacity of APS hydrogel calculated was in consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, the APS hydrogel could be easily reused at least five times without obvious decrease in absorption activity and selectivity using ammonia nitrate as the eluent, and what's more, the Cs+ concentration in eluent was approximately concentrated for 2 times after single cycle. All the results suggest that the environmental friendly and low-cost APS hydrogel could be used as effective and selective material for Cs+ removal and enrichment from wastewater.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The only population-based survey of blindness and visual impairment of a Tibetan population was conducted in the Tibet Autonomous Region in 1999. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness methodology was used to conduct a survey of Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province of China in the Fall 2017. Using the 2010 census, 100 clusters of 50 participants aged 50 years or older were randomly sampled using probability proportionate to size. RESULTS: Among the 5000 people enumerated, 4763 were examined (95.3% response). The age-adjusted and sex-adjusted prevalence of blindness, severe visual impairment, moderate visual impairment and early visual impairment (EVI) were 1.6% (95% CI: 1.08 to 2.38)), 0.9% (95% CI:0.7 to 1.5), 5.1% (95% CI:4.4 to 5.7), and 7.45% (95% CI:6.67 to 8.2), respectively. The prevalence of blindness among Tibetans was significantly higher than that among Han Chinese (2.2% (95% CI:1.8 to 2.6) and 0.6 (95% CI:0.2 to 1.7), respectively, p<0.05). Women bore a significant excess burden of EVI compared with men (8.5% (95% CI:7.5 to 9.6) and 6.1% (95% CI:5.1 to 7.2), respectively, p<0.05). Cataract was the primary cause of blindness (39.4%) followed by macular degeneration (10.6%) and corneal opacity (5.3%). CONCLUSION: Blindness and visual impairment in Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is substantially less than an earlier study of a Tibetan region and now resembles other regions of China. About 58% of blindness and 67% of SVIwere avoidable, primarily by providing cataract services. Eighty-three percent of EVI was avoidable by providing refractice services throughout the region.

ABSTRACT

Yang, Ying, Duo-Ji Zha-Xi, Wei Mao, Guang Zhi, Bin Feng, and Yun-Dai Chen. Comparison of echocardiographic parameters between healthy highlanders in Tibet and lowlanders in Beijing. High Alt Med Biol. 19:259-264, 2018.-The hearts of highlanders exhibit distinct features compared with the hearts of lowlanders. However, previous findings have not been verified in a large-scale Tibetan population study. The aim of this study was to present differences in echocardiography results among healthy native Tibetans, acclimatized Han highlanders, and Han lowlanders at sea level. A total of 1820 healthy Tibetans and 224 healthy Han highlanders were drawn from a representative sample of residents in Tibet. Echocardiography was performed on each participant at the sampled local medical centers. Echocardiographic data from 2332 healthy Han lowlanders were obtained from a database of a medical examination center in Beijing. Using propensity score matching to balance differences in demographic features, we evaluated the effects of altitude and ethnicity in three paired comparisons. The results revealed that the great arteries were larger in the Han population than in the Tibetan population regardless of altitude (all p < 0.05). No differences were found in the right atrium between different altitudes and ethnicities. The diameters and thicknesses of the right ventricle (RV) were larger in the Tibetans than in the Han lowlanders (i.e., 30.0 mm (26.0, 34.0) versus 28.6 mm (25.5, 31.8) for the basal right ventricular linear dimension). The left heart in diastole was largest in the Han lowlanders (i.e., 46.3 ± 3.9 mm versus 43.0 mm [40.0, 44.0] in Han highlanders and 45.8 mm [43.0, 48.8] versus 42.0 mm [39.0, 45.0] in Tibetans for the diameter of the left ventricle [LV] at end-diastole). Moreover, the interventricular septum was thicker in the high-altitude population than in the low-altitude population (all p < 0.05). Compared with the Tibetans, the Han highlanders exhibited enhanced ventricular functions (65.0% [60.0, 69.0] versus 68.0% [63.0, 69.0] for LV ejection fraction and 22.0 mm [20.0, 26.0] versus 24.0 mm [21.0, 27.0] for tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, both p < 0.05). In conclusion, a small left heart and a large RV may be consequences of hypoxic exposure at high altitudes irrespective of ethnic origin.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly invasive cancer associated with high mortality rates. Although sorafenib is currently recommended as standard treatment for advanced HCC, its treatment efficacy is limited. Effective treatments for patients with advanced HCC that progresses on or after sorafenib treatment or patients who are intolerant of sorafenib remain an unmet medical need. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report an advanced HCC patient with many lung metastases who failed sorafenib treatment. DIAGNOSES: Sorafenib refractory HCC patient with a large number of lung metastases. INTERVENTIONS: The apatinib alone was used as second line therapy. OUTCOMES: The patient achieved partial response (PR) soon after the treatment, which was maintained for approximately 1 year. During the entire process, the lung metastases continued to diminish. Finally, only a few lesions remained LESSONS:: Apatinib alone may be a good second-line therapy for advanced HCC patients who are refractory to sorafenib. However, further investigation in future prospective clinical studies is warranted.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the relationship between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)syndrome differentiation of multiple myeloma(MM)and laboratory indexes of MM,thus to supply evidence for the syndrome differentiation of MM. Methods A total of 59 MM patients were enrolled in the study. TCM syndrome differentiation was performed. And we also collected the laboratory indexes of serum protein electrophoresis (SPE),immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE),blood urea nitrogen (BUN),creatinine (CREA),serum beta 2 microglobulin, serum calcium(Ca),hemoglobin(Hb),Bence Jones protein, flow cytometric-immunophenotyping(FCM) and bone marrow cytology. The differences of the laboratory indexes in various syndrome types of MM were analyzed. Results No significant differences were found in myeloma cell morphology, M protein content, IFE typing results, Bence Jones protein positive rate and the concentration of Ca of various syndrome types of MM (P >0.05). However, the concentrations of BUN,CREA,serum beta 2 microsglobulin,Hb,and the positive rates of CD19- and CD56+ were significantly different in various syndrome types of MM (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Moreover,Hb,BUN,CREA,and serum beta 2 microspheres were significantly correlated with each other(P<0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion Hb, BUN, CREA, blood beta 2 microglobulin and FCM detection can be sued for the auxiliary diagnosis of syndrome types of MM, and for preliminary demonstration of illness severity and prognosis. The results will provide the basis for the treatment of MM with traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine.

ABSTRACT

A network meta-analysis was performed in order to compare the efficacy and safety of single- or double-drug antidiabetic regimens in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). PubMed and Cochrane Library searches were conducted since inception to February 2017. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of different antidiabetic regimens in the treatment of T2DM were included in this study. Direct and indirect evidences were combined to calculate the odds ratio (OR) or weighted mean difference (WMD) and its 95% confidence interval (95%CI), and in order to draw the surface under the cumulative ranking curves (SUCRA). A total of 19 RCTs meeting our inclusion criteria were finally incorporated into our network meta-analysis, including 19 single- or double-drug antidiabetic regimens. The network meta-analysis showed that the anti-hyperglycemic effects of Sitagliptin + Metformin, Empagliflozin + Metformin, Exenatide + Metformin, Vildagliptin + Metformin, Taspoglutide + Metformin, and Pioglitazone + Metformin were better than individual Metformin regimens. Dulaglutide + Metformin and Taspoglutide + Metformin regimens were comparatively less safe than individual Metformin regimens. The cluster ranking analysis based on SUCRA values suggested that Taspoglutide + Metformin regimens had best efficacy and worst safety among the different therapy regimens. Our data confirmed previous observations and suggested that Taspoglutide + Metformin regimen may have better efficacy for the treatment of T2DM among 19 therapy regimens, while its incidence of adverse events was relatively higher. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Endothelin receptor antagonists (ERAs) such as ambrisentan, sitaxsentan, bosentan and macitentan are primary drug therapies for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients. However, the optimal drugs for PAH remained controversial due to heterogeneous nature of randomized control trials (RCTs). METHODS: Apart from traditional meta-analysis, network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed in this study for multiple comparisons among PAH therapies. The 6 minute walking distance (6MWD) and clinical worsening were efficacy outcomes whereas serious adverse effects (SAE) and all-cause discontinuation were acceptability outcomes. The weighted mean difference (WMD) and odds ratio (OR) along with their 95% confidence interval (95% CI) or 95% credible interval (95% CrI) were used to evaluate the positive and negative effects of these therapies on PAH patients. RESULTS: By synthesizing direct evidence from 10 studies with a total number of 2172 patients, we discovered that all of the four PAH therapies significantly increased the average 6MWD in comparison to the placebo (P-value<0.05). Moreover, bosentan and ambrisentan both showed significant association with a decrease in the risk of clinical worsening compared to placebo. Regarding of all-cause discontinuation, ambrisentan is the only therapy which was significantly associated with a risk decrease compared to placebo. However, there was no sufficient evidence suggesting significant difference in any efficacy or acceptability outcomes between any two of the PAH therapies (P-value>0.05). CONCLUSION: Ambrisentan could be considered as the most appropriate therapy among the four ERAs for PAH patients. Bosentan also behaved well, but it is not as safe as ambrisentan.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: A network meta-analysis was performed to compare the short-term efficacy of different chemotherapy regimens in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials of different chemotherapy regimens for advanced gastric cancer were included in this study. Network meta-analysis combined direct evidence and indirect evidence to evaluate the odds ratio and draw surface under the cumulative ranking curves of different chemotherapy regimens in advanced gastric cancer. RESULTS: The results of surface under the cumulative ranking curves showed that S-1 and capecitabine regimens were better than fluorouracil. As for multi-drug combination regimens, the disease control rate of cisplatin + capecitabine, docetaxel + cisplatin + fluorouracil and etoposide + cisplatin + capecitabine regimens were relatively better, while fluorouracil + adriamycin + mitomycin regimen was relatively poorer when compared with cisplatin + fluorouracil regimen. Additionally, the overall response ratio of cisplatin + capecitabine, paclitaxel + fluorouracil, docetaxel + cisplatin + fluorouracil and etoposide + cisplatin + fluorouracil regimens were relatively better, while the disease control rate of fluorouracil + adriamycin + mitomycin regimen was relatively poorer when compared with cisplatin + fluorouracil regimen. Furthermore, the results of cluster analysis demonstrated that cisplatin + capecitabine, etoposide + cisplatin + capecitabine, S-1 + paclitaxel and S-1 + irinotecan chemotherapy regimens had better disease control rate and overall response ratio for advanced gastric cancer patients. CONCLUSION: This network meta-analysis clearly showed that multi-drug combination chemotherapy regimens based on capecitabine and S-1 might be the best chemotherapy regimen for advanced gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Lhasa is the main residence of Tibetans and one of the highest cities in the world. Its unique geography and ethnic population provide the chance to investigate the interactions among high altitude, ethnicity, and cardiac adaptation. Meanwhile, echocardiographic data about healthy Tibetans on a large scale are not available. This study aimed to analyze physiological factors related to ventricular size and valvular function in healthy Tibetans in Lhasa.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A representative sample of residents in Tibet was recruited using a multistage cluster random sampling method. Two-dimensional echocardiographic measurements and Doppler evaluation for valvular function were performed. Healthy Tibetans in Lhasa constituted the study population. Associations between physiological parameters and ventricular dimensions in healthy Tibetans were analyzed by canonical correlation analysis. Factors related to valvular regurgitations were determined by logistic regression analysis.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The 454 healthy Tibetans (340 females and 114 male) in Lhasa were included in the final analysis. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that weight was positively correlated with the proximal right ventricular outflow diameter and the basal left ventricular linear dimension in both genders. Weight and pulse were negatively related to mild tricuspid regurgitation. Age was a positive factor for pulmonary and aortic regurgitations. The same was found between systolic blood pressure and mitral regurgitation.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Weight is associated with ventricular size and valvular regurgitation in healthy Tibetans. It should be of more concern in research of high altitude population.</p>

ABSTRACT

Echinococcosis is a serious parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus tapeworms. Protoscoleces are sometimes released during surgical treatment for hydatid cysts, causing the recurrence of echinococcosis. Protoscoleces may be susceptible to radiation therapy. In this study Echinococcus protoscoleces were cultured in vitro and then divided into four different γ-ray irradiation dose groups (10 Gy, 20 Gy, 40 Gy, and 80 Gy) and a blank group. The protoscoleces were then implanted into the abdominal cavity of mice. Four months later, we observed that the incidence and weight of cysts declined with the increase of irradiation dose. γ-ray irradiation can suppress the generation of Echinococcus originated from protoscolex, the reason of which is due to the damaging to the structure of Echinococcus. Irradiation may prevent echinococcosis recurrence after surgical removal of hydatid cysts.

ABSTRACT

Hypoxia inducible factors, including HIF1A and HIF2A, play central roles in response to high-altitude hypoxia and genetic variants of HIF1A or HIF2A were associated with high-altitude sickness or adaptation. However, it remains to determine whether they are associated with tolerance to different levels of high-altitude selection pressure among native Tibetans. We recruited 189 Tibetan subjects living at 2,700 meters (Low level of high altitude, LHA), 197 at 3,200 meters (Middle level of high altitude of high altitude, MHA), 249 at 3,700 meters (High level of high altitude, HHA) and 269 at 4,700 meters (Very high level of high altitude, VHA) and performed association analysis of twelve tSNPs (tagging SNPs) in HIF1A and HIF2A with high-altitude. We found (1) a increasing trend of HIF2A rs5621780-C(18.4%, 15.9%, 32.8% and 31.1%, respectively, in LHA, MHA, HHA and VHA)(P = 3.56E-9); (2) increasing trends of HIF2A rs6756667-A(68.7%, 73.4%, 79.9% and 89.6%), rs7589621- G(74.6%, 77.9%, 83.7%, and 92.1%) and rs1868092-A(64.1%, 67.3%, 75.1% and 84.4%) (P = 3.56E-9, 4.68E-16, 1.17E-13 and 7.09E-14, respectively); (3) a increasing trend of haplotype AG (68.7%, 73.1%, 79.9% and 89.6%) (P = 2.22E-7) which was constructed by rs6756667 and rs7589621; (4) a strong linear correlation between major alleles of rs6756667-A (R2 = 0.997, P = 0.002), rs7589621-G (R2 = 0.994, P = 0.003), rs1868092-A (R2 = 0.985, P = 0.008) and altitude by linear correlation test. The associations between HIF2A variants and different level of high altitude support that extremely high-altitude hypoxia challenge imposes selective effects on HIF2A variants among native Tibetans.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the bacterial profiles in conjunctival sac of dry eyes and normal eyes in Yi people aged 40 years or old. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with standardized training and protocol. A total of 140 dry eyes of 70 individuals from Yi people in Jiulong county underwent ophthalmological examinations. The secretions of the inferior palpebral conjunctival sac were embrocated and inoculated on blood plates for 48 hours. The bacteria were separated and identified. Another 132 normal eyes from 66 Yi individuals were examined as controls. RESULTS: Bacterial positive cultivations were found in 72.1% (101/140) of dry eyes and 67.4% (89/132) of normal eyes, respectively. The difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.397). No gender difference in the bacterial positive rates was found either. Gram-positive bacteria were the main bacteria in both dry eyes (95.2%, 98/103) and normal eyes (91.1%, 82/90), predominantly staphylococcus epidemids and corynebacterium. There were no statistical differences in the constituents of bacteria in Gram classification and numbers of bacteria between dry eyes and normal eyes (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The bacterial profile in conjunctival sac of dry eyes is similar to that of normal eyes in Yi people aged 40 years or over. Gram-positive bacteria are the main bacteria.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To compare the bacterial flora in palpebral conjunctiva of xerophthalmia seniors of Tibetan, Yi and Han, and analyze the differences and similarities of the bacteria. METHODS: The test subjects were selected from 2 Tibetan, 2 Yi and 3 Han populated places, respectively. Total 222 seniors (444 eyes) with dry eye were examined. Secretion was collected from the palpebral conjunctiva of the subjects and then inoculated onto a blood agar plate. After 48h of incubation, the bacteria were examined for the differences and similarities between different ethnics. RESULTS: There was no significant difference (P>0.05) of Gram stain characterization, dominant bacteria and number of the bacterial species present in oxrophthalmia patients among Tibetan, Yi and Han nationalities. The bacteria presented in all groups include staphylococcus epidermidis, corynebacterium, micrococcus luteu, intracellular bacteria sphingomonas, pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacteria detected from the two of three ethnic groups were staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus haemolyticus, escherichia coli, kytococcus sedentarius, streptococcus angina, micrococcus lylae, and staphylococcus heads. The incidence rate of bacteria-associated dry eye in Tibetan population was significantly lower than that of Han and Yi population. CONCLUSION: There is no significant difference in the bacteria flora of palpebral conjunctiva observed among dry eye elder populations of Tibetan, Yi and Han people. All of staphylococcus epidermidis, corynebacterium, micrococcus luteu, intracellular bacteria sphingomonas, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus haemolyticus, escherichia coli, kytococcus sedentarius, streptococcus angina, micrococcus lylae and staphylococcus heads are common bacteria flora of the three nationalities inhibiting in this area.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the chemical components and microstructure of Nengchi Bajin ashes which are adjuvant material in the refining of Tibetan medicine gTSo thal, in order to explore the material basis of the refining of gTSo thal. METHOD: Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to measure the Nengchi Bajin ashes. RESULT: SEM-EDX analysis show that except of themselves elements of Nengchi Bajin ashes, Nengchi Bajin ashes contain the major elements, such as S, O, C and so on, also contain small amount other elements. XRD analysis show that the structures are AuPb2, PbO (tetragonal and orthorhombic) and Pb in gold ash, Ag2S and PbO in silver ash, Cu1.98 (Zn0.73 Fe0.29)Sn0.99 S4, CuS, SiO2, NaCu2S2 and Ca (Fe(+2), Mg) (CO3)2 in bronze ash, Cu7S4 (orthorhombic and monoclinic) and CuO in red copper ash, Cu7 S4, PbS, ZnS, CaCO3and NaCu2S2 in brass ash, FeS, Fe+2 Fe(2+3)O4 and SiO2 in iron ash, SnS and SiO2 tin ash, PbS, PbSO4 and SnS2 in lead ash. CONCLUSION: We have acquired the datum of elements and microstructure of Nengchi Bajin ashes by SEM-EDX and XRD techniques, and that is benefit to explore the material basis of refining gTSo thal.
