ABSTRACT

Outcomes in patients requiring prolonged inotropes (PI) following surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) have not been well studied. We aimed to describe the burden of PI use in the immediate postoperative period after CHD surgery and identify risk factors for in-hospital mortality. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Pediatric Health Information System® (PHIS) database. Patients 0-18 years with CHD who underwent cardiovascular surgery from 2010 to 2020 were included. Patients who received inotropic medications for > 7 consecutive days after surgery were in the PI group and all others in the control group. Patients who died before 7 days were excluded. Multivariable mixed-effect logistic regression was used to examine risk factors for in-hospital mortality. There were 110,271 patients from 48 centers included, 10,292 in the PI group and 99,979 in the control group. In-hospital mortality was significantly higher in the PI group (24.9% vs. 4.6%, p < 0.001). Ventricular assist device use was rare (1.6%). After adjustment, odds of in-hospital mortality in the PI group was 3.5 (95% CI 3.3-3.8) times higher than in controls. Independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality were age, non-White race, class of CHD, number of complex chronic conditions, preoperative inotrope, preoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, sepsis, stroke, renal failure, number of inotropes at 7 days, and discharge year (p < 0.01 for all). Postoperative PI use in CHD is common and carries a considerable burden of mortality. Additional work is needed to understand which risk factors are modifiable and which patients may benefit from reintervention or advanced heart failure therapies.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) assumes a pivotal role in predicting suicidal behaviors. The incidence of SI among high (junior and senior) school students is significantly higher than that of other age groups. The aim of this study is to explore the gender differences in SI among high school students in Yunnan Province. METHOD: A total of 6180 students in grades 7-12 in Yunnan province, China from May 2021 to May 2022 participated in this survey. Univariate analysis was employed to describe the influencing factors of male and female students' SI. Subsequently, data were stratified by gender. Adopting machine learning technique, including Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (Lasso) and Boruta algorithm, and logistic regression model to estimate the direction and effect magnitude of the influencing factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of SI was significantly higher for females (31.34 %) than males (16.73 %). The logistic regression model was established using the variables screened by Boruta algorithm, indicated that anxiety, depression, suffering emotion abuse or emotion neglect in childhood, non-suicidal self-injury, evening chronotype are common risk factors for SI in male and female students. Notably, female students who exhibited aggressive behavior, have experienced bullying, and were in the junior high school learning stage were more likely to report SI than their male counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Females showed more vulnerability to SI than males especially among females in junior high school, reporting aggressive behavior and bullying experiences. Tailored prevention strategies, informed by these gender-related distinctions, should be developed and implemented.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Serum pepsinogen (PG) is a good indicator of atrophic changes in the gastric mucosa. Gastric mucosal atrophy is a high-risk factor for gastric cancer. Serological testing for PG combined with endoscopy can help to improve gastric cancer screening. In this study, we established the reference ranges of serum PG-I, PG-II, and the PG-I/II ratio (PGR) in the Chinese population by chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Besides, in the real world, doctors are often confused by the results of different testing platforms. Thus, a comparison of methods CLIA and ELISA was performed. Methods: 2904 individuals were enrolled from six regions in China as part of the Chinese Adult Digestive Diseases Surveillance (2016) program. The individuals completed questionnaires and volunteered to undergo examinations, including gastroscopy, urea breath test, abdominal ultrasound examination and routine serologic tests. Serum was collected to measure PGs (including PG-I, PG-II and PGR) by CLIA and ELISA. Participants who were found obvious abnormalities or absent from the examinations were excluded. Ultimately, 747 healthy individuals were enrolled in this study. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to assess the distribution of variables. The Kruskal-Wallis H or Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare different sex, age, and geographical groups. The 95% reference ranges of PGs obtained by the two methods were established according to document CLSI-EP28-A3, with covariates of sex, age, and region. Spearman correlation analysis, linear regression analysis and allowable total error (ATE) zone analysis were utilized for comparing the two methods. Results: On overall, the 95% reference ranges of PG-I, PG-II, and PGR measured by CLIA were 23.00-110.64 ng/mL, 2.50-19.13 ng/mL, and 3.87-13.30, respectively. Meanwhile, the reference ranges of PG-I, PG-II, and PGR measured by ELISA were 36.93-205.06 ng/mL, 1.65-17.96 ng/mL, and 7.50-33.60, respectively. Both PG-I and PG-II levels measured by the two platforms were found to be influenced by sex and age. PGR measured by CLIA was influenced by age but not by sex, while PGR measured by ELISA was not affected by either age or sex. Regional factors did not significantly impact the PG results, except for PG-I detected by ELISA. Ultimately, reference ranges for PGs were established based on age and sex stratification. Additionally, the Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the correlation coefficients for PG-I, PG-II, and PGR detected by the two methods were 0.899, 0.887, and 0.777, respectively, indicating a strong correlation between the two methods. The regression equation for the PG levels detected by two methods was obtained through linear regression analysis. The ATE analysis provided a visual depiction of the consistency between the two methods, clearly indicating the poor agreement between them. Conclusion: This study established the reference ranges of PGs by strict and intact enrollment standard. In addition, the results indicated a strong linear relationship between the two methods, yet with a clear bias, which was valuable for laboratory interpretation.

Parameters of peripheral blood cell have been shown as the potential predictors of erectile dysfunction (ED). To investigate the clinical significance of hematological parameters for predicting the risk of rapid ejaculation, we established a rat copulatory model on the basis of ejaculation distribution theory. Blood samples from different ejaculatory groups were collected for peripheral blood cell counts and serum serotonin (5-HT) tests. Meanwhile, the relationship between hematological parameters and ejaculatory behaviors was assessed. Final analysis included 11 rapid ejaculators, 10 normal ejaculators, and 10 sluggish ejaculators whose complete data were available. The platelet (PLT) count in rapid ejaculators was significantly lower than that in normal and sluggish ejaculators, whereas the platelet distribution width (PDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were significantly greater in rapid ejaculators. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the PLT was an independent protective factor for rapid ejaculation. Meanwhile, rapid ejaculators were found to have the lowest serum 5-HT compared to normal and sluggish ejaculators (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the PLT and serum 5-HT (r = 0.662, P < 0.001), indicating that the PLT could indirectly reflect the serum 5-HT concentration. In addition, we assessed the association between the PLT and ejaculatory parameters. There was a negative correlation between ejaculation frequency (EF) and the PLT (r = -0.595, P < 0.001), whereas there was a positive correlation between ejaculation latency (EL) and the PLT (r = 0.740, P < 0.001). This study indicated that the PLT might be a useful and convenient diagnostic marker for predicting the risk of rapid ejaculation.

ABSTRACT

Cell type identification is an indispensable analytical step in single-cell data analyses. To address the high noise stemming from gene expression data, existing computational methods often overlook the biologically meaningful relationships between genes, opting to reduce all genes to a unified data space. We assume that such relationships can aid in characterizing cell type features and improving cell type recognition accuracy. To this end, we introduce scPriorGraph, a dual-channel graph neural network that integrates multi-level gene biosemantics. Experimental results demonstrate that scPriorGraph effectively aggregates feature values of similar cells using high-quality graphs, achieving state-of-the-art performance in cell type identification.

ABSTRACT

Problem: Chest radiography is a crucial tool for diagnosing thoracic disorders, but interpretation errors and a lack of qualified practitioners can cause delays in treatment. Aim: This study aimed to develop a reliable multi-classification artificial intelligence (AI) tool to improve the accuracy and efficiency of chest radiograph diagnosis. Methods: We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) capable of distinguishing among 26 thoracic diagnoses. The model was trained and externally validated using 795,055 chest radiographs from 13 datasets across 4 countries. Results: The CNN model achieved an average area under the curve (AUC) of 0.961 across all 26 diagnoses in the testing set. COVID-19 detection achieved perfect accuracy (AUC 1.000, [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.000 to 1.000]), while effusion or pleural effusion detection showed the lowest accuracy (AUC 0.8453, [95% CI, 0.8417 to 0.8489]). In external validation, the model demonstrated strong reproducibility and generalizability within the local dataset, achieving an AUC of 0.9634 for lung opacity detection (95% CI, 0.9423 to 0.9702). The CNN outperformed both radiologists and nonradiological physicians, particularly in trans-device image recognition. Even for diseases not specifically trained on, such as aortic dissection, the AI model showed considerable scalability and enhanced diagnostic accuracy for physicians of varying experience levels (all P < 0.05). Additionally, our model exhibited no gender bias (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The developed AI algorithm, now available as professional web-based software, substantively improves chest radiograph interpretation. This research advances medical imaging and offers substantial diagnostic support in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

Astrocytes are multi-functional glial cells in the central nervous system that play critical roles in modulation of metabolism, extracellular ion and neurotransmitter levels, and synaptic plasticity. Astrocyte-derived signaling molecules mediate many of these modulatory functions of astrocytes, including vesicular release of ATP. In the present study, we used a unique genetic mouse model to investigate the functional significance of astrocytic exocytosis of ATP. Using primary cultured astrocytes, we show that loss of vesicular nucleotide transporter (Vnut), a primary transporter responsible for loading cytosolic ATP into the secretory vesicles, dramatically reduces ATP loading into secretory lysosomes and ATP release, without any change in the molecular machinery of exocytosis or total intracellular ATP content. Deletion of astrocytic Vnut in adult mice leads to increased anxiety, depressive-like behaviors, and decreased motivation for reward, especially in females, without significant impact on food intake, systemic glucose metabolism, cognition, or sociability. These behavioral alterations are associated with significant decreases in the basal extracellular dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. Likewise, ex vivo brain slices from these mice show a strong trend toward a reduction in evoked dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. Mechanistically, the reduced dopamine signaling we observed is likely due to an increased expression of monoamine oxidases. Together, these data demonstrate a key modulatory role of astrocytic exocytosis of ATP in anxiety, depressive-like behavior, and motivation for reward, by regulating the mesolimbic dopamine circuitry.

BACKGROUND: Zhiguo ethnic groups, commonly known as "the directly-entering-socialism ethnic groups", represent Chinese ethnic minorities who have undergone a unique social development trajectory by transforming directly from primitive societies to the socialist stage. In recent decades, significant lifestyle transformations have occurred among Zhiguo ethnic groups. Understanding their health lifestyles can play a strategic role in China's pursuit of universal health coverage. This study aims to examine patterns of health-related lifestyle among Zhiguo ethnic groups and explore whether sociodemographic features and specific indicators related to health status are associated with particular classes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Yunnan Province, China, from July to December 2022. Stratified random sampling method was employed to recruit residents belonging to six Zhiguo ethnic groups aged between 15 and 64. Latent class analysis was performed to identify clusters of health-related behaviors within each ethnic group. Logistic regression was utilized to determine the predictors of health lifestyles. RESULTS: A total of 1,588 individuals from the Zhiguo ethnic groups participated in this study. Three latent classes representing prevalent health lifestyles among the Zhiguo ethnic groups were identified: "unhealthy lifestyle" (31.80%), "mixed lifestyle" (57.37%), and "healthy lifestyle" (10.83%). In the overall population, individuals belonging to the "healthy lifestyle" group exhibited a higher likelihood of being non-farmers (OR: 2.300, 95% CI: 1.347-3.927), women (OR: 21.459, 95% CI: 13.678-33.667), married individuals (OR: 1.897, 95% CI: 1.146-3.138), and those residing within a walking distance of less than 15 min from the nearest health facility (OR: 2.133, 95% CI: 1.415-3.215). Conversely, individuals in the age cohorts of 30-39 years (OR: 0.277, 95% CI: 0.137-0.558) and 40-49 years (OR: 0.471, 95% CI: 0.232-0.958) showed a decreased likelihood of adopting a healthy lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: A considerable proportion of the Zhiguo ethnic groups have not adopted healthy lifestyles. Targeted interventions aimed at improving health outcomes within these communities should prioritize addressing the clustering of unfavorable health behaviors, with particular emphasis on single male farmers aged 30-49, and expanding healthcare coverage for individuals residing more than 15 min away from accessible facilities.

ABSTRACT

Background Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be used to identify interval breast cancers, although the localizations are not always accurate. Purpose To evaluate AI localizations of interval cancers (ICs) on screening mammograms by IC category and histopathologic characteristics. Materials and Methods A screening mammography data set (median patient age, 57 years [IQR, 52-64 years]) that had been assessed by two human readers from January 2011 to December 2018 was retrospectively analyzed using a commercial AI system. The AI outputs were lesion locations (heatmaps) and the highest per-lesion risk score (range, 0-100) assigned to each case. AI heatmaps were considered false positive (FP) if they occurred on normal screening mammograms or on IC screening mammograms (ie, in patients subsequently diagnosed with IC) but outside the cancer boundary. A panel of consultant radiology experts classified ICs as normal or benign (true negative [TN]), uncertain (minimal signs of malignancy [MS]), or suspicious (false negative [FN]). Several specificity and sensitivity thresholds were applied. Mann-Whitney U tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and χ2 tests were used to compare groups. Results A total of 2052 screening mammograms (514 ICs and 1548 normal mammograms) were included. The median AI risk score was 50 (IQR, 32-82) for TN ICs, 76 (IQR, 41-90) for ICs with MS, and 89 (IQR, 81-95) for FN ICs (P = .005). Higher median AI scores were observed for invasive tumors (62 [IQR, 39-88]) than for noninvasive tumors (33 [IQR, 20-55]; P < .01) and for high-grade (grade 2-3) tumors (62 [IQR, 40-87]) than for low-grade (grade 0-1) tumors (45 [IQR, 26-81]; P = .02). At the 96% specificity threshold, the AI algorithm flagged 121 of 514 (23.5%) ICs and correctly localized the IC in 93 of 121 (76.9%) cases, with 48 FP heatmaps on the mammograms for ICs (rate, 0.093 per case) and 74 FP heatmaps on normal mammograms (rate, 0.048 per case). The AI algorithm correctly localized a lower proportion of TN ICs (54 of 427; 12.6%) than ICs with MS (35 of 76; 46%) and FN ICs (four of eight; 50% [95% CI: 13, 88]; P < .001). The AI algorithm localized a higher proportion of node-positive than node-negative cancers (P = .03). However, no evidence of a difference by cancer type (P = .09), grade (P = .27), or hormone receptor status (P = .12) was found. At 89.8% specificity and 79% sensitivity thresholds, AI detection increased to 181 (35.2%) and 256 (49.8%) of the 514 ICs, respectively, with FP heatmaps on 158 (10.2%) and 307 (19.8%) of the 1548 normal mammograms. Conclusion Use of a standalone AI system improved early cancer detection by correctly identifying some cancers missed by two human readers, with no differences based on histopathologic features except for node-positive cancers. © RSNA, 2024 Supplemental material is available for this article.

ABSTRACT

Integration of inherently incompatible elements into a single sublattice, resulting in the formation of monophasic metal oxide, holds great scientific promise; it unveils that the overlooked surface entropy in subnanometer materials can thermodynamically facilitate the formation of homogeneous single-phase structures. Here a facile approach is proposed for synthesizing multimetallic oxide subnanometer nanobelts (MMO-PMA SNBs) by harnessing the potential of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) clusters to capture inorganic nuclei and inhibiting their subsequent growth in solvothermal reactions. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that PMA in MMO-PMA SNBs not only aids subnanometer structure formation but also induces in situ modifications to catalytic sites. The electron transfer from PMA, coupled with the loss of elemental identity of transition metals, leads to electron delocalization, jointly activating the reaction sites. The unique structure makes pentametallic oxide (PMO-PMA SNBs) achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low potential of 1.34 V and remain stable for 24 h at 10 mA cm-2 on urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The exceptional UOR catalytic activity suggests a potential for utilizing multimetallic subnanometer nanostructures in energy conversion and environmental remediation.

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in relapse and survival from high-risk neuroblastoma (HRNBL) persist among children from historically marginalized groups even in highly standardized clinical trial settings. Research in other cancers has identified differential treatment toxicity as one potential underlying mechanism. Whether racial and ethnic disparities in treatment-associated toxicity exist in HRNBL is poorly understood. METHODS: This is a retrospective study utilizing a previously assembled merged cohort of children with HRNBL on Children's Oncology Group (COG) post-consolidation immunotherapy trials ANBL0032 and ANBL0931 at Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) centers from 2005 to 2014. Race and ethnicity were categorized to reflect historically marginalized populations as Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black (NHB), non-Hispanic other (NHO), and non-Hispanic White (NHW). Associations between race-ethnicity and intensive care unit (ICU)-level care utilization as a proxy for treatment-associated toxicity were examined with log binomial regression and summarized as risk ratio (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The analytic cohort included 370 children. Overall, 88 (23.8%) patients required ICU-level care for a median of 3.0 days (interquartile range [IQR]: 1.0-6.5 days). Hispanic children had nearly three times the risk of ICU-level care (RR 3.1, 95% CI: 2.1-4.5; fully adjusted RR [aRR] 2.5, 95% CI: 1.6-3.7) compared to NHW children and the highest percentage of children requiring cardiovascular-driven ICU-level care. CONCLUSION: Children of Hispanic ethnicity with HRNBL receiving clinical trial-delivered therapy were more likely to experience ICU-level care compared to NHW children. These data suggest that further investigation of treatment-related toxicity as a modifiable mechanism underlying outcome disparities is warranted.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: While acute cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are well-described, less is known about longer-term cardiac sequelae. For many individuals with cardiac signs or symptoms arising after COVID-19 infection, the aetiology remains unclear. We examined immune profiles associated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities in patients with unexplained cardiac injury after COVID-19. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-one participants (mean age 47 [SD 13] years, 71% female) with long COVID (n=17), raised troponin (n=2), or unexplained new-onset heart failure (n=2), who did not have pre-existing heart conditions or recent steroid/immunosuppression treatment were enrolled a mean 346 (SD 191) days after COVID-19 infection in a prospective observational study. Cardiac MRI and blood sampling for deep immunophenotyping using mass cytometry by time of flight and measurement of proteomic inflammatory markers was performed. Nine of 21 (43%) participants had MRI abnormalities (MRI(+)), including non-ischaemic patterns of late gadolinium enhancement and/or visually overt myocardial oedema in 8 people. One patient had mildly impaired biventricular function without fibrosis or oedema, and 2 had severe left ventricular impairment. MRI(+) individuals had higher blood CCL3, CCL7, FGF-23 and CD4 Th2 cells, and lower CD8 T effector memory (TEM) cells, than MRI(-). Cluster analysis revealed lower expression of inhibitory receptors PD1 and TIM3 in CD8 TEM cells from MRI(+) patients than MRI(-) patients, and functional studies of CD8 T αß cells showed higher proportions of cytotoxic granzyme B+ secreting cells upon stimulation. CD8 TEM cells and CCL7 were the strongest predictors of MRI abnormalities in a LASSO regression model (composite AUC 0.96, 95%CI 0.88-1.0). CCL7 was correlated with diffuse myocardial fibrosis/oedema detected by quantitative T1 mapping (r=0.47, p=0.04). CONCLUSION: COVID-19 related cardiac injury in symptomatic patients with non-ischaemic myocarditis-like MRI abnormalities is associated with immune dysregulation, including decreased peripheral CD8 TEM cells and increased CCL7, persisting long after the initial infection.

ABSTRACT

The development of heteroatom dual-doped porous carbon frameworks with uniform doping is highly desirable for achieving highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, due to their tunable chemical and electronic structures. Herein, porous covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) incorporating nitrogen/chorine dual-doped porous carbon networks were fabricated by selecting 1,3-bis(4-cyanophenyl) imidazolium chloride as a building block, in a facile and controllable way via a bottom-up strategy. The resulting nitrogen/chorine dual-doped catalyst CCTF-700 exhibits excellent ORR performance with a more positive onset and half-wave potential (0.85 V vs. RHE), higher diffusion-limited current density and significantly improved stability in comparison with the benchmark commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. It is worth mentioning that CCTF-700 shows one of the best ORR performances among all the reported metal-free electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions. This work paves the way for a controllable and reliable strategy to craft highly efficient heteroatom dual-doped carbon catalysts for energy conversion.

Oecanthus is a genus of cricket known for its distinctive chirping and distributed across major zoogeographical regions worldwide. This study focuses on Oecanthus rufescens, and conducts a comprehensive examination of its genome through genome sequencing technologies and bioinformatic analysis. A high-quality chromosome-level genome of O. rufescens was successfully obtained, revealing significant features of its genome structure. The genome size is 877.9 Mb, comprising ten pseudo-chromosomes and 70 other sequences, with a GC content of 41.38% and an N50 value of 157,110,771 bp, indicating a high level of continuity. BUSCO assessment results demonstrate that the genome's integrity and quality are high (of which 96.8% are single-copy and 1.6% are duplicated). Comprehensive genome annotation was also performed, identifying approximately 310 Mb of repetitive sequences, accounting for 35.3% of the total genome sequence, and discovering 15,481 tRNA genes, 4,082 rRNA genes, and 1,212 other noncoding genes. Furthermore, 15,031 protein-coding genes were identified, with BUSCO assessment results showing that 98.4% (of which 96.3% are single-copy and 1.6% are duplicated) of the genes were annotated.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: To assess the performance of the European Thyroid Association Thyroid Imaging and Reporting Data System (EU-TIRADS) and the Korean Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (K-TIRADS), which combine risk stratification systems for thyroid nodules (TN-RSS) and cervical lymph nodes (LN-RSS) in diagnosing malignant and metastatic thyroid cancer in a single referral center. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2,055 consecutive patients who underwent thyroidectomy or fine-needle aspiration (FNA) from January 2021 to December 2022. TNs and LNs were categorized according to the ultrasonography (US) features of EU-TIRADS and K-TIRADS, respectively. The diagnostic performance and postponed malignancy rate (PMR) were compared with those of EU-TIRADS and K-TIRADS. PMR was defined as the number of patients with malignant nodules not recommended for biopsy among patients with cervical LN metastasis. Results: According to the EU-TIRADS and K-TIRADS, for TN-RSS alone, there were no significant differences in sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, unnecessary FNA rate (UFR), missed malignancy rate (MMR), and PMR between the two TIRADSs (29.0% vs. 28.8%, 50.5% vs. 51.1%, 32.3% vs. 32.2%, 23.6% vs. 23.5%, 88.6% vs. 88.5%, and 54.2% vs. 54.5%, P > 0.05 for all). Combining the LN-RSS increased the diagnostic accuracy (42.7% vs. 32.3% in EU-TIRADS; 38.8% vs. 32.2% in K-TIRADS) and decreased the PMR (54.2% vs. 33.9% in EU-TIRADS; 54.5% vs. 39.3% in K-TIRADS). EU-TIRADS had higher sensitivity and accuracy and lower PMR than K-TIRADS (41.3% vs. 36.7%, 42.7% vs. 38.8%,33.9% vs. 39.3%, P < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: A combination of TN-RSS and LN-RSS for the management of thyroid nodules may be associated with a reduction in PMR, with enhanced sensitivity and accuracy for thyroid cancers in EU-TIRADS and K-TIRADS. These results may offer a new direction for the detection of aggressive thyroid cancers.

ABSTRACT

The Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute and chronic Hepatitis E and is a global public health concern. HEV genotypes 3 (HEV-3) and 4 (HEV-4) are common to humans and animals, and domestic pigs and wild boars have been identified as the main reservoirs. However, limited information is available on the status of HEV infection in pigs, particularly in the Guangdong Province, China. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of HEV in pig farms within the Guangdong Province. A total of 1568 serum samples were collected from 25 farms and tested for anti-HEV IgG antibodies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results revealed that 57.53% (902/1568) of serum samples from 24 farms (24/25, 96%) were positive for anti-HEV IgG antibodies. Year, season, region, and age were all linked risk factors for HEV in Guangdong, with season and region showing more significant impacts. The results showing a high seroprevalence of HEV confirmed its circulation among domestic pigs in the Guangdong Province, China. The presence of this antibody indicates that HEV infection was or is present on farms, posing a risk of zoonotic transmission of HEV from pigs to exposed workers and from pork or organs to consumption.
