Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common serious chronic neurological disorders, which can have a serious negative impact on individuals, families and society, and even death. With the increasing application of machine learning techniques in medicine in recent years, the integration of machine learning with epilepsy has received close attention, and machine learning has the potential to provide reliable and optimal performance for clinical diagnosis, prediction, and precision medicine in epilepsy through the use of various types of mathematical algorithms, and promises to make better parallel advances. However, no bibliometric assessment has been conducted to evaluate the scientific progress in this area. Therefore, this study aims to visually analyze the trend of the current state of research related to the application of machine learning in epilepsy through bibliometrics and visualization. Methods: Relevant articles and reviews were searched for 2004-2023 using Web of Science Core Collection database, and bibliometric analyses and visualizations were performed in VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Bibliometrix (R-Tool of R-Studio). Results: A total of 1,284 papers related to machine learning in epilepsy were retrieved from the Wo SCC database. The number of papers shows an increasing trend year by year. These papers were mainly from 1,957 organizations in 87 countries/regions, with the majority from the United States and China. The journal with the highest number of published papers is EPILEPSIA. Acharya, U. Rajendra (Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore) is the authoritative author in the field and his paper "Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Automated Detection and Diagnosis of Epileptic Seizures Using EEG Signals" was the most cited. Literature and keyword analysis shows that seizure prediction, epilepsy management and epilepsy neuroimaging are current research hotspots and developments. Conclusions: This study is the first to use bibliometric methods to visualize and analyze research in areas related to the application of machine learning in epilepsy, revealing research trends and frontiers in the field. This information will provide a useful reference for epilepsy researchers focusing on machine learning.

Cardiac hypertrophy is the most prevalent compensatory heart disease that ultimately leads to spontaneous heart failure. Mounting evidence suggests that microRNAs (miRs) and endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) play a crucial role in the regulation of cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether inhibition of miR-27a could protect against cardiac hypertrophy by modulating H2S signaling. We established a model of cardiac hypertrophy by obtaining hypertrophic tissue from mice subjected to transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and from cells treated with angiotensin-II. Molecular alterations in the myocardium were quantified using quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR), Western blotting, and ELISA. Morphological changes were characterized by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and Masson's trichrome staining. Functional myocardial changes were assessed using echocardiography. Our results demonstrated that miR-27a levels were elevated, while H2S levels were reduced in TAC mice and myocardial hypertrophy. Further luciferase and target scan assays confirmed that cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) was a direct target of miR-27a and was negatively regulated by it. Notably, enhancement of H2S expression in the heart was observed in mice injected with recombinant adeno-associated virus vector 9 (rAAV9)-anti-miR-27a and in cells transfected with a miR-27a inhibitor during cardiac hypertrophy. However, this effect was abolished by co-transfection with CSE siRNA and the miR-27a inhibitor. Conversely, injecting rAAV9-miR-27a yielded opposite results. Interestingly, our findings demonstrated that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists could mitigate myocardial damage by down-regulating miR-27a and up-regulating CSE. In summary, our study suggests that inhibition of miR-27a holds therapeutic promise for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy by increasing H2S levels. Furthermore, our findings unveil a novel mechanism of GLP-1 agonists involving the miR-27a/H2S pathway in the management of cardiac hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects on the motor function, cortex blood flow perfusion, microglial cells, and the contents of serum inflammatory factors, i.e. interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) after electroacupuncture (EA) preconditioning at "Baihui" (GV20) and "Dazhui" (GV14) in the mice with ischemic stroke, so as to explore the mechanism of EA preconditioning for improving motor function after ischemic stroke. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into sham-operation group, model group, and EA preconditioning group (EA group), with 15 mice in each group. A photothrombotic method was used to induce the model of unilateral ischemic stroke and motor impairment. The mice in the EA group received EA preconditioning, 20 min each time, once daily for 7 consecutive days before modeling. The motor function of mice was evaluated by the grid-walking test and cylinder test before and after modeling. Laser speckle blood flow video monitoring system was employed to assess the cerebral blood flow perfusion in the primary motor cortex of mice. The contents of IL-1ß, TGF-ß, and IL-10 in the serum were measured by ELISA, and the expressions of microglial cell and M2 subtype cell marker in the primary motor cortex were detected using immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: After modeling, compared with the sham-operation group, the grid error rate and the dragging rate of the affected limb were increased (P<0.01);the utilization rate of the affected limb and percentage of the blood perfusion in the affected cortex to healthy side were decreased (P<0.01);the contents of serum IL-1ß, TGF-ß, and IL-10 were increased (P<0.01, P<0.05);and the microglia in the primary motor cortex on the affected side showed ameboid, the fluorescence intensity of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1) and CD206 was increased (P<0.01) in the model group. In the EA group, when compared with the model group, the grid error rate and the dragging rate of affected limb were decreased (P<0.01);the utilization rate of affected limb and the percentage of blood perfusion were increased (P<0.05);the content of serum IL-1ß was decreased (P<0.01), while the contents of TGF-ß and IL-10 were increased (P<0.01);and the microglia in the primary motor cortex on the affected side got more round and were distributed more densely, the fluorescence intensity of IBA1 and CD206 was increased (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Electroacupuncture preconditioning at "GV20" and "GV14" can up-regulate the expression of microglial cells, especially the M2 subtype cell marker, and increase the contents of the anti-inflammatory factors and decrease that of the pro-inflammatory factors in the serum, thereby alleviate the inflammatory reaction.

This study aimed to explore the antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects of rectal administration of Reduning injection in feverish rats induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and observe the temperature changes and inflammatory indexes. The selected rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, with 10 rats in each group, named as normal empty group, model group, intravenous group (2 mL/kg), low-dose enema group (1 mL/kg), middle-dose enema group (2 mL/kg), and high-dose enema group (4 mL/kg). The hourly temperature variations in rats injected with LPS in the abdomen were recorded. Five hours later, blood samples from the abdominal aorta were collected to monitor immunoglobulin M (IgM), immunoglobulin A (IgA), interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. At 5 hours, the fever peak induced by LPS appeared, and obvious antipyretic effects were observed; the effect was optimal in the medium dose enema group at 4 hours (p < 0.05); the IgM value in the enema groups, the intravenous group, and normal empty group was significantly lower than that in the model group; the IgA value in each group was higher than that in the model group, but there was no statistical significance (p > 0.05); values of IL-6 and TNF-α in each group were lower than those in the model group, and the difference was statistically significant except for the high-dose enema group (p > 0.05). Low-dose and medium-dose rectal administration of Reduning injection have inhibitory effects on IL-6, TNF-α, and IgM in feverish rats induced by LPS, but there is no obvious difference compared to intravenous administration and it could achieve an anti-inflammatory effect. There is a possibility of enhancing IgA immunity with rectal administration, but there is no obvious difference compared to intravenous administration, and rectal administration has no significant effect on mucosal immunity.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most frequent primary bone cancer, which is mainly suffered by children and young adults. While the current surgical treatment combined with chemotherapy is effective for the early stage of OS, advanced OS preferentially metastasizes to the lung and is difficult to treat. Here, we examined the efficacy of ten anti-OS peptide candidates from a trypsin-digested conditioned medium that was derived from the secretome of induced tumor-suppressing cells (iTSCs). Using OS cell lines, the antitumor capabilities of the peptide candidates were evaluated by assaying the alterations in metabolic activities, proliferation, motility, and invasion of OS cells. Among ten candidates, peptide P05 (ADDGRPFPQVIK), a fragment of aldolase A (ALDOA), presented the most potent OS-suppressing capabilities. Its efficacy was additive with standard-of-care chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin and doxorubicin, and it downregulated oncoproteins such as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Snail, and Src in OS cells. Interestingly, P05 did not present inhibitory effects on non-OS skeletal cells such as mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblast cells. Collectively, this study demonstrated that iTSC-derived secretomes may provide a source for identifying anticancer peptides, and P05 may warrant further evaluations for the treatment of OS.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with insidious onset and progressive development. There is an urgent need to find drugs that prevent and slow AD progression. We focus our attention on 3,6'-disinapoyl sucrose (DISS), an oligosaccharide with antidepressant and antioxidant activities. In this work, APP/PS1 transgenic mice were used to explore the neuroprotective impact of DISS to provide new applications for prevention and therapy of AD. This study aims to assess DISS's neuroprotective impact on learning and memory deficits in APP/PS1 transgenic mice using behavioral tests (Morris water maze, novel object recognition test, and passive avoidance test). Morphological alterations of hippocampus neurons were observed by Nissl staining and neuronal apoptosis was assessed by TUNEL assay. By using ELISA, the expressions of inflammatory factors were evaluated, and Western blotting was used to measure the protein expressions of neuron-related regulators in the hippocampus. DISS significantly ameliorated the cognitive disorder in APP/PS1 transgenic mice, reduced apoptosis by decreasing the ratio of Bax/B-cell lymphoma/leukemia-2 (Bcl-2) in hippocampal neurons, and restored the abnormal secretion of inflammatory factors (IL-2, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6). Moreover, the gavage of high-dose DISS can boost the expressions of CREB/brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Overall, our results indicate that DISS improves cognitive function in APP/PS1 transgenic mice by inhibiting neural apoptosis and activating the CREB/BDNF signal pathway.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this study, for the first time, DISS was used in APP/PS1 transgenic mice to explore its neuroprotective effect. After gavage DISS for 1 mo, the impairment of learning and spatial memory ability and the loss of neurons in APP/PS1 mice were alleviated. DISS reduced a neuroprotective effect in AD mice via decreasing neuronal apoptosis, enhancing the expressions of CREB phosphorylation and BDNF, pointing to DISS as a new therapeutic target for AD.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic, neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system and is found predominantly in elderly populations. As amyloid b protein (Ab) is one of the key players responsible for the pathogenesis of AD, we sought to investigate the protective effects of fisetin in an Ab1-42-induced rat model of AD. In this model, the protective effects of fisetin on learning and memory impairment induced by Ab1-42 were determined via the Morris water maze and passive avoidance test. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity, anti-inflammation, and apoptosis effect of fisetin were investigated using biochemical and immunohistochemical methods. The results showed that intragastric (i.g.) administration of fisetin (100, 50, and 25 mg/kg) improved previous learning and memory impairments in Ab1-42-treated rats. Hippocampal tissue from these fisetin-treated rats revealed that the activities of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were markedly enhanced, and that the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were significantly reduced. Meanwhile, fisetin also significantly attenuated Ab1-42-induced cholinergic dysfunction such as elevated the activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and reduced the activity of acetylcholine esterase (AChE). In addition, hippocampal tissue obtained from fisetin-treated rats revealed a reversal of Ab1-42-induced effects on apoptotic pathway protein (caspase-3) expression and inflammatory response of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). This indicated that the amount of degenerating hippocampal neurons with apoptotic features was dramatically reduced after treatment with fisetin. Collectively, these findings suggest that fisetin has potential as a treatment agent for Alzheimer's disease and that its effects occur through several mechanisms, including inhibition of oxidative stress, adjustments to previous cholinergic dysfunction, anti-inflammatory actions, and decreased apoptotic activity.

Capniidae are a family of stoneflies, also known as snow flies, who emerge in winter. The phylogeny of Capniidae is widely accepted to be based on morphological analysis. Until now, only five Capniidae mitochondrial genomes have been sequenced so far. In addition, sampling is required to determine an accurate phylogenetic association because the generic classification of this family is still controversial and needs to be investigated further. In this study, the first mitogenome of genus Isocapnia was sequenced with a length of 16,200 bp and contained 37 genes, including a control region, two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and 13 PCGs, respectively. Twelve PCGs originated with the common start codon ATN (ATG, ATA, or ATT), while nad5 used GTG. Eleven PCGs had TAN (TAA or TAG) as their last codon; however, cox1 and nad5 had T as their final codon due to a shortened termination codon. All tRNA genes demonstrated the cloverleaf structure, which is distinctive for metazoans excluding the tRNASer1 (AGN) that missed the dihydrouridine arm. A Phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily Nemouroidea was constructed using thirteen PCGs from 32 formerly sequenced Plecoptera species. The Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood phylogeny tree structures derived similar results across the thirteen PCGs. Our findings strongly supported Leuctridae + ((Capniidae + Taeniopterygidae) + (Nemouridae + Notonemouridae)). Ultimately, the best well-supported generic phylogenetic relationship within Capniidae is as follows; (Isocapnia + (Capnia + Zwicknia) + (Apteroperla + Mesocapnia)). These findings will enable us to better understand the evolutionary relationships within the superfamily Nemouroidea and the generic classification and mitogenome structure of the family Capniidae.

Intraspecific morphological variability of four Styloperla Wu, 1935 species are described and discussed in this paper. The males of each species have variable specializations present at their basal cercal process, including the variable number of branches or differing degrees of curvature at the apical spines. A generalization on the species definition of Plecoptera, especially a new concept of conspecificity is also provided herein.

With the rapid development of nanotechnology and nanomedicine, there are great interests in employing nanomaterials to improve the efficiency of disease diagnosis and treatment. The clinical translation of hafnium oxide (HfO2 ), commercially namedas NBTXR3, as a new kind of nanoradiosensitizer for radiotherapy (RT) of cancers has aroused extensive interest in researches on Hf-based nanomaterials for biomedical application. In the past 20 years, Hf-based nanomaterials have emerged as potential and important nanomedicine for computed tomography (CT)-involved bioimaging and RT-associated cancer treatment due to their excellent electronic structures and intrinsic physiochemical properties. In this review, a bibliometric analysis method is employed to summarize the progress on the synthesis technology of various Hf-based nanomaterials, including HfO2 , HfO2 -based compounds, and Hf-organic ligand coordination hybrids, such as metal-organic frameworks or nanoscaled coordination polymers. Moreover, current states in the application of Hf-based CT-involved contrasts for tissue imaging or cancer diagnosis are reviewed in detail. Importantly, the recent advances in Hf-based nanomaterials-mediated radiosensitization and synergistic RT with other current mainstream treatments are also generalized. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives of Hf-based nanomaterials with a view to maximize their great potential in the research of translational medicine are also discussed.

Mesoporous carbon material (MCM) with rich ether surface group was prepared from sewage sludge hydrochar using Pluronic F127 as template under pyrolysis activation, which provided an energy-efficient method to promote the resource utilization of sewage sludge as adsorbents for phenols removal from water. The MCM possessed high surface area (549 m2/g), abundant mesopores (average width 3.81 nm) and well-developed graphite structure. Acidic conditions and low temperatures favored the adsorption of phenolic compounds. The quick adsorption process of reaching over 85% of the capacity in the first 10 min and intraparticle diffusion as primary rate-limiting step were observed for all phenolic compounds. Advanced statistical physics analysis was used successfully to interpret the adsorption mechanism of phenols onto MCM and revealed a multi-molecular monolayer adsorption process primarily through negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond interaction where the ether functional group contributed to the predominant active sites. The adsorption capacity of phenolic compounds depended upon the number of molecules adsorbed per ether active site and the available density of ether bond group on the surface of MCM. 2,4,6-trichlorophenol showed a highest adsorption priority to occupy the limited ether active sites and its adsorption capacity reached 0.49 mmol/g, while p-nitrophenol exhibited a maximum number of molecules adsorbed on the single ether active site, showing an adsorption capacity of 0.42 mmol/g. The synergistic effect of multi-interactions mechanisms resulted in phenolic compounds removal with adsorption energies lower than 30 kJ/mol. This prepared MCM adsorbent is promising for application in treatment of water polluted by phenols.

The aim of this study is to explore the effect and mechanism of 3,6'-disinapoylsucrose (DISS) on an Alzheimer's disease (AD) mice model induced by APPswe695 lentivirus (LV) and intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results show that DISS improves cognitive ability, decreases the levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α, reduces the expression of NF-κB p65, and alleviates Aß deposition and nerve cell damage. DISS can regulate tyrosine kinase B (TrkB)/brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling in the hippocampus. In summary, DISS can significantly alleviate neuroinflammation, spatial learning and memory disorders in AD model mice.

The second species of Neowuia Li & Murnyi, 2017, N. wuyishana sp. nov., is proposed with a description from Mount Wuyi, Fujian Province, southeastern China. Morphological features, namely adults and eggs, support Neowuia as a member of the tribe Diploperlini. Geographically, our study firstly reports the distribution of all Diploperlini in the Oriental region, while Neowuia is the second genus of subfamily Perlodinae recorded in southeastern coastal China.

Currently, information on the biology of Plecoptera from China is scarce, particularly on mating behavior. In this paper, the existence of mating mistakes (erroneous mating attempts) involving 13 Chinese stonefly species (belonging to nine genera and three families) is reported. These erroneous mating behaviors can be included into three different categories: mating attempts between conspecific males (including the formation of erroneous mating balls), mating attempts between different taxa (including displacement attempts during copulation), and mating-related behaviors with non-living objects. From these behaviors, some aspects of stoneflies during mating, such as the physical competition between males, the sensorial mechanisms implied in triggering a mating behavior, the conditions favoring the mating mistakes, and the possible consequences of interspecific mating in the hybrid production, are discussed.

The type species of Filchneria Klapálek, 1908, F. mongolica (Klapálek, 1901), is based on a single female collected from Mongolia, but it was considered the same as another species, F. songi from Qinling, China, when the genus Filchneria was proposed. This study narrates the story of these two species, which have been confused for a century. Until now, the distribution of F. mongolica has been confirmed only in Mongolia and Russia, and we recently recorded it for the first time in Inner Mongolia as a new species record in China. Additionally, the genus Sinoperlodes is a junior synonym of Filchneria, as demonstrated by both the morphological and molecular analysis. Phylogenetic analysis based on the subfamily Perlodinae is provided, along with morphological and biogeographic comparisons of Filchneria and its relatives.

UR50 ultra-early-strength cement-based self-compacting high-strength material is a special cement-based material. Compared with traditional high-strength concrete, its ultra-high strength, ultra-high toughness, ultra-impact resistance, and ultra-high durability have received great attention in the field of protection engineering, but the dynamic mechanical properties of impact compression at high strain rates are not well known, and the dynamic compressive properties of materials are the basis for related numerical simulation studies. In order to study its dynamic compressive mechanical properties, three sets of specimens with a size of Φ100 × 50 mm were designed and produced, and a large-diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with a diameter of 100 mm was used to carry out impact tests at different speeds. The specimens were mainly brittle failures. With the increase in impact speed, the failure mode of the specimens gradually transits from larger fragments to small fragments and a large amount of powder. The experimental results show that the ultra-early-strength cement-based material has a greater impact compression brittleness, and overall rupture occurs at low strain rates. Its dynamic compressive strength increases with the increase of strain rates and has an obvious strain rate strengthening effect. According to the test results, the relationship curve between the dynamic enhancement factor and the strain rate is fitted. As the impact speed increases, the peak stress rises, the energy absorption density increases, and its growth rate accelerates. Afterward, based on the stress-strain curve, the damage variables under different strain rates were fitted, and the results show that the increase of strain rate has a hindering effect on the increase of damage variables and the increase rate.

We examined specimens of the Haploperla Navs, 1934 from Sichuan and Qinghai provinces, China. Two new synonyms of Haploperla valentinae Stark Sivec, 2009 are established: Haploperla triangulata Chen Du, 2016 syn. nov. and Haploperla datongensis Chen Du, 2016 syn. nov. We redescribed H. valentinae from China with new color images to facilitate the identification. In addition, we also provide supplementary descriptions and contemporary color images of H. tuanjiena Du Chen, 2016.

Three new species of Sinacroneuria Yang Yang, 1995, Sinacroneuria parallela Xiang Du, sp. nov., Sinacroneuria complana Xiang Du, sp. nov. and Sinacroneuria longiprojecta Du Huo sp. nov., from Zhejiang Province of southeastern China are described and illustrated. A list and provisional key to Sinacroneuria males of Zhejiang Province are also presented.

After reexamining the syntype series of Perlodinella kozlovi Klaplek, 1912, a new species of Perlodinella, P. tibetensis Huo Du sp. nov. is proposed, and a lectotype is designated for P. kozlovi. Another monotypic genus of Perlodidae, Rauserodes Zwick (1999), is considered as a synonym of Perlodinella in this paper.
