ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading causes of death and illness worldwide. While there have been advancements in the treatment of CVDs using medication and medical procedures, these conventional methods have limited effectiveness in halting the progression of heart diseases to complete heart failure. However, in recent years, the hormone melatonin has shown promise as a protective agent for the heart. Melatonin, which is secreted by the pineal gland and regulates our sleep-wake cycle, plays a role in various biological processes including oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and cell death. The Sirtuin (Sirt) family of proteins has gained attention for their involvement in many cellular functions related to heart health. It has been well established that melatonin activates the Sirt signaling pathways, leading to several beneficial effects on the heart. These include preserving mitochondrial function, reducing oxidative stress, decreasing inflammation, preventing cell death, and regulating autophagy in cardiac cells. Therefore, melatonin could play crucial roles in ameliorating various cardiovascular pathologies, such as sepsis, drug toxicity-induced myocardial injury, myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, hypertension, heart failure, and diabetic cardiomyopathy. These effects may be partly attributed to the modulation of different Sirt family members by melatonin. This review summarizes the existing body of literature highlighting the cardioprotective effects of melatonin, specifically the ones including modulation of Sirt signaling pathways. Also, we discuss the potential use of melatonin-Sirt interactions as a forthcoming therapeutic target for managing and preventing CVDs.

ABSTRACT

Neuroblastoma is a common inflammatory-related cancer during infancy. Standard treatment modalities including surgical interventions, high-dose chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy are not able to increase survival rate and reduce tumor relapse in high-risk patients. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known for their tumor-targeting and immunomodulating properties. MSCs could be engineered to express anticancer agents (i.e., growth factors, cytokines, pro-apoptotic agents) or deliver oncolytic viruses in the tumor microenvironment. As many functions of MSCs are mediated through their secretome, researchers have tried to use extracellular vesicles (EVs) from MSCs for targeted therapy of neuroblastoma. Here, we reviewed the studies to figure out whether the use of MSCs could be worthwhile in neuroblastoma therapy or not. Native MSCs have shown a promoting or inhibiting role in cancers including neuroblastoma. Therefore, MSCs are proposed as a vehicle to deliver anticancer agents such as oncolytic viruses to the neuroblastoma tumor microenvironment. Although modified MSCs or their EVs have been shown to suppress the tumorigenesis of neuroblastoma, further pre-clinical and clinical studies are required to come to a conclusion.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer has a high prevalence among women, with a high mortality rate. The number of people who suffer from breast cancer disease is increasing, whereas metastatic cancers are mostly incurable, and existing therapies have unfavorable side effects. For an extended duration, scientists have dedicated their efforts to exploring the potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of metastatic cancers, including breast cancer. MSCs could be genetically engineered to boost their anticancer potency. Furthermore, MSCs can transport oncolytic viruses, suicide genes, and anticancer medicines to tumors. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are MSC products that have attracted scientist's attention as a cell-free treatment. This study narratively reviews the current state of knowledge on engineered MSCs and their EVs as promising treatments for breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To develop an evidence-based guideline to care for hand-burned patients. Design: An integrative review. Method: The search was conducted of EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Clinical Key, Iranmedex, Magiran, Scientific Information Database (SID), Cochran, CINAHL and Google Scholar databases from January 2000-August 2019. Following the formation of the research team, two researchers independently selected the eligible studies. The initial search resulted in 2,230 records; ultimately, 40 articles were identified to be the review after screening the records based on the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality of selected studies was evaluated with the MMAT method. Results: Data syntheses of selected studies, coded by highlighting the relevant parts of the text, and assigning code words to these areas were done. Following this, a constant comparison was used to develop categories by combining codes. Finally, hand burns nursing care guideline was developed by categorizing descriptive themes in two main phases. Conclusion: This review results have shown that evidence-based guidelines present high-quality recommendations for the healthcare team, which improves the quality of clinical care. Due to a lack of established guidelines in our context, it seems to be helpful to use evidence-based guidelines in managing burned hands.

ABSTRACT

Aims: This review study aimed to investigate the strategies for implementing the nursing process in the clinical practice and the assessment of the implementation rate of this process in clinical settings of lower-income countries. Design: An integrative review. Method: The search was conducted of EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus and ISI databases from 1975-July 2018. Following the formation of the research team, two researchers independently selected the eligible studies; finally, 39 articles were approved by the research team for this study. Results: The researchers identified three themes: Effects of implementing the NP in clinical settings, Development and application of electronic software in the NP and Factors affecting the implementation of the NP. This review revealed that nurses and nursing managers in hospitals are interested in implementing the nursing process in the form of widely and continuously. But the necessary infrastructure, such as manpower, electronically or manually tools, has not yet been provided, and the implementation of the nursing process is done either imperfectly or not done.
