ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between climatic parameters and the daily cases of Bell's palsy (BP) among hospital outpatients, providing ecological evidence for understanding BP etiology and prevention. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 2187 BP patients who attended Kunshan First People's Hospital Outpatient Clinic from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2022. Meteorological data, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine duration, and atmospheric pressure, were collected and combined with daily BP case records. Additionally, air quality index was used as a covariate. Results: The number of new BP cases among outpatients showed a negative correlation with average daily temperature. A nonlinear relationship between daily average temperature and BP cases was observed through the generalized additive model (GAM). A significant negative correlation was identified between daily average temperature and BP cases, with inflection points at temperatures above 4.2°C, suggesting a potential decrease in BP risk with temperature rise beyond this threshold. Conclusion: This study provides ecological evidence of a link between climatic factors and BP occurrence. Temperature demonstrated a significant nonlinear negative correlation with daily BP incidence, highlighting temperature and cold exposure as key targets for BP prevention in Kunshan.

ABSTRACT

Tumor cells remodel the phenotype and function of tumor microenvironment (TME) cells to favor tumor progression. Previous studies have shown that neutrophils in TME are polarized to N2 tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) by tumor derived factors, thus promoting tumor growth and metastasis, angiogenesis, therapy resistance, and immunosuppression. Exosomes act as critical intercellular messengers in human health and diseases including cancer. So far, the biological roles of exosomes from N2 TANs in gastric cancer have not been well characterized. Herein, we represented the first report that exosomes from N2 TANs promoted gastric cancer metastasis in vitro and in vivo. We found that exosomes from N2 TANs transferred miR-4745-5p/3911 to gastric cancer cells to downregulate SLIT2 (slit guidance ligand 2) gene expression. Adenovirus-mediated overexpression of SLIT2 reversed the promotion of gastric cancer metastasis by N2 TANs derived exosomes. We further revealed that gastric cancer cells induced glucose metabolic reprogramming in neutrophils through exosomal HMGB1 (high mobility group protein B1)/NF-κB pathway, which mediated neutrophil N2 polarization and miR-4745-5p/3911 upregulation. We further employed ddPCR (droplet digital PCR) to detect the expression of miR-4745-5p/3911 in N2 TANs exosomes from human serum samples and found their increased levels in gastric cancer patients compared to healthy controls and benign gastric disease patients. Conclusively, our results indicate that N2 TANs facilitate cancer metastasis via regulation of SLIT2 in gastric cancer cells by exosomal miR-4745-5p/3911, which provides a new insight into the roles of TME cells derived exosomes in gastric cancer metastasis and offers a potential biomarker for gastric cancer diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The association between red blood cell distribution width (RDW) to albumin ratio (RAR) and prognosis in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study aims to investigate this association. METHODS: Clinical information of ARF patients was collected from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) version 2.0 database. The primary outcome was, in-hospital mortality and secondary outcomes included 28-day mortality, 60-day mortality, length of hospital stay, and length of ICU stay. Cox regression models and subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between RAR and mortality. RESULTS: A total of 4547 patients with acute respiratory failure were enrolled, with 2277 in the low ratio group (RAR < 4.83) and 2270 in the high ratio group (RAR > = 4.83). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated a significant difference in survival probability between the two groups. After adjusting for confounding factors, the Cox regression analysis showed that the high RAR ratio had a higher hazard ratio (HR) for in-hospital mortality (HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.07-1.40; P = 0.003), as well as for 28-day mortality and 60-day mortality. Propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis further supported the finding that high RAR was an independent risk factor for ARF. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that RAR is an independent risk factor for poor clinical prognosis in patients with ARF admitted to the ICU. Higher RAR levels were associated with increased in-hospital, 28-day and 60-day mortality rates.

ABSTRACT

Photochromic diarylethene has attracted broad research interest in optical applications owing to its excellent fatigue resistance and unique bistability. Photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethene become a powerful molecular tool for fluorescence imaging recently. Herein, the recent progress on photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethenes in bioimaging is reviewed. We summarize summarized the structures and properties of diarylethene fluorescence probes, and emphatically introduces their applications in bioimaging as well as super-resolution imaging. Additionally, we highlight the current challenges in practical applications and provides the prospects of the future development directions of photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethene in the field of bioimaging.  This comprehensive review aims to stimulate further research into higher performance photoswitchable fluorescent molecules and advance their progress in biological application.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Owing to the limited treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), interventions targeting pre-HCC stages have attracted increasing attention. In the pre-HCC stage, hepatic tumor-initiating cells (hTICs) proliferate abnormally and contribute to hepatocarcinogenesis. Numerous studies have investigated targeted senescence induction as an HCC intervention. However, it remains to be clarified whether senescence induction of hTICs could serve as a pre-HCC intervention. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate whether senescence induction of hTICs in the precancerous stage inhibit HCC initiation. METHODS AND RESULTS: HCC models developed from chronic liver injury (CLI) were established by using Fah-/- mice and N-Ras + AKT mice. PD-0332991, a selective CDK4/6 inhibitor that blocks the G1/S transition in proliferating cells, was used to induce senescence during the pre-HCC stage. Upon administration of PD-0332991, we observed a significant reduction in HCC incidence following selective senescence induction in hTICs, and an alleviation liver injury in the CLI-HCC models. PD-0332991 also induced senescence in vitro in cultured hTICs isolated from CLI-HCC models. Moreover, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis delineated that the "Cyclin D-CDK4/6-INK4-Rb" pathway was activated in both mouse and human liver samples during the pre-HCC stage, while PD-0332991 exhibited substantial inhibition of this pathway, thereby inducing cellular senescence in hTICs. Regarding the immune microenvironment, we demonstrated that senescent hTICs secrete key senescence-associated secretory phenotypic (SASP) factors, CXCL10 and CCL2, to activate and recruit macrophages, and contribute to immune surveillance. CONCLUSION: We found that hTICs can be targeted and induced into a senescent state during the pre-HCC stage. The SASP factors released by senescent hTICs further activate the immune response, facilitating the clearance of hTICs, and consequently suppressing HCC occurrence. We highlight the importance of pre-HCC interventions and propose that senescence-inducing drugs hold promise for preventing HCC initiation under CLI.

ABSTRACT

Organoids generating major cortical cell types in distinct compartments are used to study cortical development, evolution and disorders. However, the lack of morphogen gradients imparting cortical positional information and topography in current systems hinders the investigation of complex phenotypes. Here, we engineer human cortical assembloids by fusing an organizer-like structure expressing fibroblast growth factor 8 (FGF8) with an elongated organoid to enable the controlled modulation of FGF8 signaling along the longitudinal organoid axis. These polarized cortical assembloids mount a position-dependent transcriptional program that in part matches the in vivo rostrocaudal gene expression patterns and that is lost upon mutation in the FGFR3 gene associated with temporal lobe malformations and intellectual disability. By producing spatially oriented cell populations with signatures related to frontal and temporal area identity within individual assembloids, this model recapitulates in part the early transcriptional divergence embedded in the protomap and enables the study of cortical area-relevant alterations underlying human disorders.

Introduction: Accurate reference genomes are fundamental to understanding biological evolution, biodiversity, hereditary phenomena and diseases. However, many assembled nuclear chromosomes are often contaminated by organelle genomes, which will mislead bioinformatic analysis, and genomic and transcriptomic data interpretation. Methods: To address this issue, we developed a tool named Chlomito, aiming at precise identification and elimination of organelle genome contamination from nuclear genome assembly. Compared to conventional approaches, Chlomito utilized new metrics, alignment length coverage ratio (ALCR) and sequencing depth ratio (SDR), thereby effectively distinguishing true organelle genome sequences from those transferred into nuclear genomes via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Results: The accuracy of Chlomito was tested using sequencing data from Plum, Mango and Arabidopsis. The results confirmed that Chlomito can accurately detect contigs originating from the organelle genomes, and the identified contigs covered most regions of the organelle reference genomes, demonstrating efficiency and precision of Chlomito. Considering user convenience, we further packaged this method into a Docker image, simplified the data processing workflow. Discussion: Overall, Chlomito provides an efficient, accurate and convenient method for identifying and removing contigs derived from organelle genomes in genomic assembly data, contributing to the improvement of genome assembly quality.

ABSTRACT

Combining selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with bioactive polysaccharides is one of the effective ways to overcome the shortcomings of SeNPs and polysaccharides and obtain novel antitumor drug candidates. In this study, a heteropolysaccharide (MTP70) with moderate antihepatoma activity was isolated from the stems of Marsdenia tenacissima (Roxb.) Wight et Arn. To further improve the antihepatoma activity of MTP70 and the application of SeNPs, a novel stable nanoparticle (MTP-SeNP) was designed and fabricated. MTP-SeNPs (Se content of 8.25 %) were characterized as monodisperse spherical nanoparticles (50 nm) with MTP70 wrapped on the surface of the SeNPs by the formation of CO⋯Se bonds and possessed high stability and good dispersion in water for almost a month. In addition, MTP-SeNPs showed higher inhibitory effect compared with MTP70. MTP-SeNPs could effectively inhibit the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of HepG2 cells by inducing apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle at the S phase, which were closely related to the activation of the Bax/Bcl-2/Caspases and p21/Akt/Cyclin A2 signaling pathways. Our results provide a theoretical basis for further development and application of M. tenacissima polysaccharide, and show that MTP-SeNPs could be explored as a promising anti-hepatoma agent in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of biplanar vertical fixation and inverted triangle fixation with hollow screw for Pauwels type Ⅲ femoral neck fracture in young and middle-aged patients. Methods: The clinical data of 55 young and middle-aged patients with Pauwels type Ⅲ femoral neck fracture between June 2021 and December 2022 was retrospectively analyzed. All patients were treated with closed reduction and internal fixation with hollow screws, 25 cases were treated with biplanar vertical fixation (study group), 30 cases with inverted triangle fixation (control group). There was no significant difference in gender, age, affected side, cause of injury, underlying diseases, and time from injury to operation between the two groups ( P>0.05). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, fluoroscopy times, guide needle puncture times, starting time of weight bearing, time of full weight bearing, time of fracture healing, and complications were recorded and compared between the two groups. The hip joint function was evaluated by Harris score at 1 day, 6 months, 12 months after operation, and at last follow-up, and the pain relief was evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS) score. The femoral neck shortening was measured on the X-ray film at last follow-up. Results: All patients were followed up 12-31 months (mean, 22.0 months), and there was no significant difference in follow-up time between the two groups ( P>0.05). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and fluoroscopy times in the study group were higher than those in the control group, but the difference was not significant ( P>0.05). The guide needle puncture times in the study group was more than that in the control group, and the time of starting weight bearing and the time of full weight bearing in the study group were shorter than those in the control group, the differences were significant ( P<0.05). Bony healing was achieved in both groups, and there was no significant difference in fracture healing time between the two groups ( P>0.05). No osteonecrosis of the femoral head and incision-related complication was found in the two groups during follow-up, and the femoral neck shortening length in the study group was significantly shorter than that in the control group at last follow-up ( P<0.05). There was no significant difference in Harris score between the two groups at 1 day after operation ( P>0.05), and the Harris score of the study group was significantly better than that of the control group at other time points ( P<0.05); there was no significant difference in VAS score between the two groups at each time point after operation ( P>0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the inverted triangle fixation, the treatment of Pauwels type Ⅲ femoral neck fracture with biplanar vertical fixation can effectively reduce femoral neck shortening without affecting fracture healing, and improve hip joint function in early stage.

ABSTRACT

We present generalizing statistical surrogate models to select an optimized photosensitizer, TPP, which is subsequently loaded into autologous exosomes by ultrasonic mixing to achieve tumor targeting with enhanced therapeutic efficacy by photodynamic therapy (PDT). This work contributes to the exploration of PDT enhancement strategies, and provides new prospects for using autologous exosomes as a delivery system.

ABSTRACT

Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a usual neurological complication, often leading to poor prognoses. Early identification of high-risk patients is crucial for preventing POD. Sarcopenia is an age-related geriatric syndrome characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, and previous studies indicated that preoperative low muscle mass might be a predictor for POD. However, the association between preoperative sarcopenia and POD remains to be fully elucidated. This study was to explore the correlation between preoperative sarcopenia and POD following gastrointestinal cancer surgery in older patients. Methods: Older patients (≥60 years) undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery were enrolled. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Special Interest Group on sarcopenia of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISarcoPRM), which combined the loss of muscle mass (evaluated by ultrasound) and function (assessed by chair stand test and handgrip strength) before surgery. POD assessment was performed using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) or CAM for the intensive care unit (CAM-ICU) during the first 7 days after surgery or before discharge. Multivariate logistic regression analysis examined the correlation between preoperative sarcopenia and POD. Moreover, the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to analyze the predictive effect of the preoperative sarcopenia in POD. Results: One hundred and thirty patients were finally included, of which 43 patients presented with sarcopenia before surgery. Twenty-four patients ultimately developed POD, and the incidence was 18.5%. The results of the multivariate analyses demonstrated that preoperative sarcopenia was still independently associated with POD after adjusting for age ≥70 years, preoperative Mini-Mental State Examination score, and intraoperative blood transfusion. The area under the ROC curve of preoperative sarcopenia in predicting POD was 0.680 (95% confidence interval 0.557-0.804). Conclusion: Preoperative sarcopenia defined by ISarcoPRM criteria was independently associated with POD in geriatric patients after gastrointestinal cancer surgery.

ABSTRACT

Aiming at the problem that the existing methods are insufficient in dealing with the background noise anti-interference of underwater fish images, a contrastive learning method of ignoring background called CLIB for underwater fish image classification is proposed to improve the accuracy and robustness of underwater fish image classification. First, CLIB effectively separates the subject from the background in the image through the extraction module and applies it to contrastive learning by composing three complementary views with the original image. To further improve the adaptive ability of CLIB in complex underwater images, we propose a multi-view-based contrastive loss function, whose core idea is to enhance the similarity between the original image and the subject and maximize the difference between the subject and the background, making CLIB focus more on learning the core features of the subject during the training process, and effectively ignoring the interference of background noise. Experiments on the Fish4Knowledge, Fish-gres, WildFish-30, and QUTFish-89 public datasets show that our method performs well, with improvements of 1.43-6.75%, 8.16-8.95%, 13.1-14.82%, and 3.92-6.19%, respectively, compared with the baseline model, further validating the effectiveness of CLIB.

Background: The relationship between the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and bone mineral density (BMD) is controversial. Furthermore, the specific role of apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1), a primary HDL component, in regulating BMD remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the correlation between APOA1 levels and lumbar BMD in patients with osteoporotic fracture (OPF) for novel insights into potential therapeutic strategies against osteoporosis. Methods: This study included 587 OPF patients enrolled at the Kunshan Hospital, Affiliated with Jiangsu University between January 2017 and July 2022. The patient's serum APOA1 levels were determined, followed by the assessment of lumbar BMD and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ß-CTX) as outcome variables. The association of APOA1 levels with lumbar BMD and ß-CTX was assessed via Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) and spline smoothing plot analyses. A generalized additive model (GAM) helped ascertain non-linear correlations. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was also conducted to validate the result's stability. Results: It was observed that APOA1 levels were positively correlated with lumbar BMD (ß = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.11, p = 0.0045), indicating that increased APOA1 levels were linked with enhanced lumbar BMD. Furthermore, APOA1 levels were negatively related to ß-CTX (ß = -0.19, 95% CI: -0.29 to -0.09, p = 0.0003), suggesting APOA1 might reduce osteolysis. In addition, these findings were robustly supported by subgroup and threshold effect analyses. Conclusion: This study indicated that increased APOA1 levels were correlated with enhanced lumbar BMD and decreased osteolysis in OPF patients. Therefore, APOA1 may inhibit osteoclast activity to prevent further deterioration in osteoporotic patients. However, further research I warranted to validate these conclusions and elucidate the underlying physiologies.

In order to achieve the high adsorption and catalytic performance of CO2, the direct self-assembly of robust defect-engineered MOFs is a scarcely reported and challenging proposition. Herein, a highly robust nanoporous indium(III)-organic framework of {[In2(CPPDA)(H2O)3](NO3)·2DMF·3H2O}n (NUC-107) consisting of two kinds of inorganic units of chain-shaped [In(COO)2(H2O)]n and watery binuclear [In2(COO)4(H2O)8] was generated by regulating the growth environment. It is worth mentioning that [In2(COO)4(H2O)8] is very rare in terms of its richer associated water molecules, implying that defect-enriched metal ions in the activated host framework can serve as strong Lewis acid. Compared to reported skeleton of [In4(CPPDA)2(µ3-OH)2(DMF)(H2O)2]n (NUC-66) with tetranuclear clusters of [In4(µ3-OH)2(COO)10(DMF)(H2O)2] as nodes, the void volume of NUC-107 (50.7%) is slightly lower than the one of NUC-66 (52.8%). However, each In3+ ion in NUC-107 has an average of 1.5 coordinated small molecules (H2O), which far exceeds the average of 0.75 in NUC-66 (H2O and DMF). After thermal activation, NUC-107a characterizes the merits of unsaturated In3+ sites, free pyridine moieties, solvent-free nanochannels (10.2 × 15.7 Å2). Adsorption tests prove that the host framework of NUC-107a has a higher CO2 adsorption (113.2 cm3/g at 273 K and 64.8 cm3/g at 298 K) than NUC-66 (91.2 cm3/g at 273 K and 53.0 cm3/g at 298 K). Catalytic experiments confirmed that activated NUC-107a with the aid of n-Bu4NBr was capable of efficiently catalyzing the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides into corresponding cyclic carbonates under the mild conditions. Under the similar conditions of 0.10 mol% MOFs, 0.5 mol% n-Bu4NBr, 0.5 MP CO2, 60 °C and 3 h, compared with NUC-66a, the conversion of SO to SC catalyzed by NUC-107a increased by 21%. Hence, this work offers a valuable perspective that the in situ creation of robust defect-engineered MOFs can be realized by regulating the growth environment.

ABSTRACT

Human physical activity monitoring plays a crucial role in promoting personalized health management. In this work, inspired by an ancient Chinese belt, a belt-type wearable sensor (BWS) based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is presented to monitor daily movements and collect the body motion mechanical energy. The developed BWS consists of a soft silicone sheet and systematically connected sensing units made from triboelectric polymer materials including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyamide (PA). A parameter study of the sensing units is firstly conducted to optimize the structure of BWS. The experimental studies indicate that the parameter-optimized BWS unit achieves a maximum output voltage of 47 V and a maximum current of 0.17 µA. A BWS with five sensing units is manufactured to record body movements, and it is able to distinguish different physical activities including stillness, walking, running, jumping, normal breathing, cessation of breathing, and deep breathing. In addition, the developed BWS successfully powers electronic devices including a smartphone, digital watch, and LED lights. We hope this work provides a new strategy for the development of wearable self-powered intelligent devices.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between the multiple chronic conditions (MCC), mental health and cognitive function of older adults in the community, and to propose a hypothesis that depressive symptom mediate the number of chronic diseases and cognitive impairment in older adults. Method: Participants aged 65 years and older from 35 communities in 14 cities in Guangxi, China were recruited. The residents' depressive symptom (PHQ-9) and cognitive status (AD-8) were evaluated, Chi-square test was used to explore the effects of different socio-demographic characteristics on depressive symptom and cognitive impairment. Pearson correlation analysis and the process model 4 were used to explore the relationship between the number of chronic diseases, depressive symptom and cognitive impairment. Result: A total of 11,582 older adults were included in our analysis. The rate of MCC reaching 26.53%. Hypertension combined with diabetes accounts for the highest proportion of two chronic diseases (13.2%). Among the combination of three chronic diseases, the highest incidence of coexisting hypertension combined with cervical/lumbar spondylosis, and rheumatoid arthritis (7.1%). In this study, depression symptoms accounted for 12.9% of older adults aged 65 and above, and cognitive impairment accounted for 27.4%. Female, older age, reside in urban areas, lower educational levels, no spouse, live alone, and MCC were risk factors for depressive symptom and cognitive impairment in older adults (P<0.05). Depressive symptom had a mediating effect in the number of chronic diseases and cognitive impairment, and the mediating effect (1.109) accounted for 44.13% of the total effect (0.247). Conclusion: The mental health of the older adult needs to be taken seriously, and improving depressive symptom can reduce the occurrence of cognitive impairment in older patients with MCC to a certain extent.

ABSTRACT

Although the solvation force is considered one of the key forces behind the oriented attachment (OA), the precise roles of solvents in this process remain incompletely elucidated. In this study, we examined the effect of solvent polarities (water, acetone, and chloroform) on the attachment of silver nanoparticles by calculating the free energy curves for the OA process. The observed magnitudes of the binding energies and approaching and dissociation energy barriers are commensurate with the respective solvent polarities. Consequently, OA is more likely to occur in acetone with an intermediate permittivity relative to that of water and chloroform. Additionally, we identified a topological descriptor, namely, the Euler characteristic, of the solvent network, especially the water network, between two approaching surfaces, which manifests a linear correlation with the observed free energy profiles. This descriptor holds promise as a quantitative tool for predicting interactions between nanoparticles in solvent environments featuring hydrogen bond networks.

ABSTRACT

Background: While suboptimal medication adherence remains an obstacle to the management of hypertension and diabetes in China, few studies have investigated associated factors with medication adherence on different dimensions simultaneously. Objective: To systematically examine associated patient, family, and community factors with suboptimal medication adherence among people with hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes in China. Methods: The study stratified a random sample of 622 adults aged 45 years or older with hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes from three southeast cities in China in 2019. Trained interviewers used the Morisky Green Levine Medication Adherence Scale, Self-Efficacy to Manage Chronic Disease (SEMCD) Scale, and the Family Adaptability, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve (APGAR) Scale to assess medication adherence, self-efficacy, and family function, respectively. Participants also reported their perceived satisfaction with community health services (quantity, quality, affordability, and overall acceptance). The study used the multivariable logistic regression to assess the association of patient, family, and community factors with suboptimal medication adherence. Results: Among the participants, 42.9% reported suboptimal medication adherence. In the multivariable logistic regression model, male participants (odds ratio [OR] = 0.55, p = 0.001) had higher medication adherence compared to females. Having a self-efficacy score that was lower than or equal to the sample mean was significantly associated with lower adherence (OR = 1.44, p = 0.039). Participants unsatisfied with the affordability of community health services and medicine had lower adherence (OR = 2.18, p = 0.028) than those neutral or satisfied. There were no significant associations between family function and medication adherence. Conclusions: Sex, self-efficacy, and perceived affordability of community health services were important factors associated with medication adherence. Healthcare professionals are recommended to consider multiple factors and leverage services and resources in community health centers when promoting medication adherence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Obesity correlates with accelerated aging. This study aims to investigate the association between the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and accelerated aging. METHODS: Biological aging was evaluated by phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel). Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2010, we employed weighted multivariable logistic regression models, along with subgroup analysis, to examine the association between VAI and PhenoAgeAccel. Moreover, smooth curve fitting was utilized to identify potential nonlinear association, complemented by a two-piece linear regression model to investigate threshold effects. RESULTS: Of the included 11,340 participants aged 20 years and older, the mean (95% CI) age was 46.569 (45.946, 47.191) years, and 49.189% were male. The mean (95% CI) VAI for all participants was 2.176 (2.114, 2.238), and the mean (95% CI) PhenoAgeAccel was -6.306 (-6.618, -5.994) years. In the fully adjusted model, each incremental unit increase of VAI was associated with a 0.312-year increase in PhenoAgeAccel (ß = 0.312, 95% CI: 0.217, 0.408). This positive association was more statistically significant among individuals with cancer. Furthermore, a segmented association was observed between VAI and PhenoAgeAccel, with a turning point identified at 10.543. Below this threshold, VAI exhibited a positive correlation with PhenoAgeAccel (ß = 0.617, 95% CI: 0.499, 0.735), while beyond it, the association became nonsignificant. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a positive association between VAI and accelerated aging within a nationally representative population. The findings suggest that controlling adiposity may exert anti-aging effects and help prevent aging-related diseases.
