ABSTRACT

This research examines the association between blood pressure variability (BPV) and renal damage in a cohort of 129 primary aldosteronism (PA) patients, employing ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) for comparative analysis with individuals diagnosed with essential hypertension (EH). The study reveals that PA patients exhibited significantly elevated levels of cystatin C and urine microalbumin/creatinine ratio (UACR). Additionally, a higher prevalence of non-dipping blood pressure patterns in PA patients suggests an increased risk of circadian blood pressure regulation disturbances. Notably, while most BPV indices were comparable between the two groups, the standard deviation of 24-h weighted diastolic blood pressure was markedly lower in the PA cohort, distinguishing it as a unique variable. Through multiple linear regression analysis, the duration of hypertension, angiotensin II concentrations, and daytime systolic blood pressure standard deviation emerged as significant determinants of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in PA patients. Furthermore, UACR was significantly influenced by variables including the 24-h weighted standard deviation (wSD) of systolic BP, glycosylated hemoglobin levels, nocturnal systolic BP peaks, aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR), and total cholesterol, with the most pronounced association observed with the 24-h wSD of systolic BP (ß = 0.383).The study also found significant correlations between the 24-h wSD of systolic BP, ARR, HbA1c, serum potassium levels, and 24-h urinary microalbumin, underscoring the critical role of the 24-h wSD of systolic BP (ß = 0.267). These findings underscore the imperative of an integrated management strategy for PA, addressing the intricate interconnections among metabolic abnormalities, blood pressure variability, and renal health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is extensively cultivated in China, with its production highly reliant on regional environmental conditions. Given ongoing climate change, it is imperative to assess its impact on chili pepper cultivation and identify suitable habitats for future cultivation. In this study, the MaxEnt model was optimized and utilized to predict suitable habitats for open-field chili pepper cultivation, and changes in these habitats were analyzed using ArcGIS v10.8. Our results showed that the parameter settings of the optimal model were FC = LQPTH and RM = 2.7, and the critical environmental variables influencing chili pepper distribution were annual mean temperature, isothermality, maximum temperature of the warmest month, and precipitation of the warmest quarter. Under current climate conditions, suitable habitats were distributed across all provinces in China, with moderately- and highly-suitable habitats concentrated in the east of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and south of the Inner Mongolia Plateau. Under future climate scenarios, the area of suitable habitats was expected to be larger than the current ones, except for SSP126-2050s, and reached the maximum under SSP126-2090s. The overlapping suitable habitats were concentrated in the east of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and south of the Inner Mongolia Plateau under various climate scenarios. In the 2050s, the centroids of suitable habitats were predicted to shift towards the southwest, except for SSP126, whereas this trend was reversed in the 2090s. Our results suggest that climate warming is conductive to the cultivation of chili pepper, and provide scientific guidance for the introduction and cultivation of chili pepper in the face of climate warming.

ABSTRACT

Black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) is a pulses crop with good digestible protein and a high carbohydrate content, so it is widely consumed as human food and animal feed. Trichomes are large, specialized epidermal cells that confer advantages on plants under biotic and abiotic stresses. Genes regulating the development of trichomes are well characterized in Arabidopsis and tomato. However, little is known about trichome development in black gram. In this study, a high-density map with 5734 bin markers using an F2 population derived from a trichome-bearing and a glabrous cultivar of black gram was constructed, and a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) related to trichomes was identified. Six candidate genes were located in the mapped interval region. Fourteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or insertion/deletions (indels) were associated with those genes. One indel was located in the coding region of the gene designated as Scaffold_9372_HRSCAF_11447.164. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis demonstrated that only one candidate gene, Scaffold_9372_HRSCAF_11447.166, was differentially expressed in the stem between the two parental lines. These two candidate genes encoded the RNA polymerase-associated protein Rtf1 and Bromodomain adjacent to zinc finger domain protein 1A (BAZ1A). These results provide insights into the regulation of trichome development in black gram. The candidate genes may be useful for creating transgenic plants with improved stress resistance and for developing molecular markers for trichome selection in black gram breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorders (MDD) and bipolar disorders (BD) are the most common psychiatric diagnoses of suicide attempts (SA) in adolescents. However, little is known regarding the differences in incidence and clinical-related features of SA between these two disorders. The study aims to examine the SA incidence and related factors in adolescents with MDD versus BD. METHOD: A retrospective survey was conducted in outpatients. SA incidence, demographic characteristics and substance use history were collected. Symptom Checklist-90 was used to measure the severity of symptoms. The Revised Chinese internet addiction scale and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 were utilized to assess the presence of internet addiction and impulsiveness. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire was used to measure childhood maltreatment subtypes. RESULTS: 295 MDD and 205 BD adolescents were recruited. The incidence of SA for MDD and BD were 52.5 % and 56.4 %, respectively. BD adolescents who attempted suicide showed worse symptoms, higher rates of nicotine and alcohol use, higher motor and non-planning impulsivity, and a more childhood physical abuse proportion than MDD adolescents with SA. Physical abuse in childhood was found to be associated with SA in both disorders (OR = 1.998 for MDD; OR = 2.275 for BD), while higher anxiety (OR = 1.705), and alcohol use (OR = 2.094) were only associated with SA in MDD. LIMITATIONS: Retrospective, cross-sectional design cannot draw causality, and biases in self-report measurements cannot be ignored. CONCLUSIONS: The findings revealed some difference between BD and MDD for adolescents with SA, and it emphasize significance of prompt identification and exact distinction between BD and MDD in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exposure to antibiotics predisposes to dysbiosis and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) that can be severe, recurrent (rCDI), and life-threatening. Nonselective drugs that treat CDI and perpetuate dysbiosis are associated with rCDI, in part due to loss of microbiome-derived secondary bile acid (SBA) production. Ridinilazole is a highly selective drug designed to treat CDI and prevent rCDI. METHODS: In this phase 3 superiority trial, adults with CDI, confirmed with a stool toxin test, were randomized to receive 10 days of ridinilazole (200 mg twice daily) or vancomycin (125 mg 4 times daily). The primary endpoint was sustained clinical response (SCR), defined as clinical response and no rCDI through 30 days after end of treatment. Secondary endpoints included rCDI and change in relative abundance of SBAs. RESULTS: Ridinilazole and vancomycin achieved an SCR rate of 73% versus 70.7%, respectively, a treatment difference of 2.2% (95% CI: -4.2%, 8.6%). Ridinilazole resulted in a 53% reduction in recurrence compared with vancomycin (8.1% vs 17.3%; 95% CI: -14.1%, -4.5%; P = .0002). Subgroup analyses revealed consistent ridinilazole benefit for reduction in rCDI across subgroups. Ridinilazole preserved microbiota diversity, increased SBAs, and did not increase the resistome. Conversely, vancomycin worsened CDI-associated dysbiosis, decreased SBAs, increased Proteobacteria abundance (∼3.5-fold), and increased the resistome. CONCLUSIONS: Although ridinilazole did not meet superiority in SCR, ridinilazole greatly reduced rCDI and preserved microbiome diversity and SBAs compared with vancomycin. These findings suggest that treatment of CDI with ridinilazole results in an earlier recovery of gut microbiome health. Clinical Trials Registration.Ri-CoDIFy 1 and 2: NCT03595553 and NCT03595566.

ABSTRACT

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an issue primarily of concern in adolescents and young adults. Recent literature suggests that persistent, repetitive, and uncontrollable NSSI can be conceptualized as a behavioral addiction. The study aimed to examine the prevalence of NSSI with addictive features and the association of this prevalence with demographic and clinical variables using a cross-sectional and case-control design. A total of 548 outpatients (12 to 22 years old) meeting the criteria for NSSI disorder of DSM-5 were enrolled and completed clinical interviews by 4 psychiatrists. NSSI with addictive features were determined by using a single-factor structure of addictive features items in the Ottawa self-injury inventory (OSI). Current suicidality, psychiatric diagnosis, the OSI, the revised Chinese Internet Addiction Scale, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale were collected. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to explore associations between risk factors and NSSI with addictive features. This study was conducted from April 2021 to May 2022. The mean age of participants was 15.93 (SD = 2.56) years with 418 females (76.3%), and the prevalence of addictive NSSI was 57.5% (n = 315). Subjects with addictive NSSI had a higher lifetime prevalence of nicotine and alcohol use, a higher prevalence of current internet addiction, suicidality, and alexithymia, and were more likely to have physical abuse/neglect, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse than NSSI subjects without addictive features. Among participants with NSSI, the strongest predictors of addictive features of NSSI were female (OR = 2.405, 95% CI 1.512-3.824, p < 0.0001), alcohol use (OR = 2.179, 95% CI 1.378-3.446, p = 0.001), current suicidality (OR = 3.790, 95% CI 2.351-6.109, p < 0.0001), and psysical abuse in childhood (OR = 2.470, 95% CI 1.653-3.690, p < 0.0001). Nearly 3 out of 5 patients (12-22 years old) with NSSI met the criteria of NSSI with addictive features in this psychiatric outpatients sample. Our study demonstrated the importance of the necessity to regularly assess suicide risk, and alcohol use, as well as focus more on females and subjects who had physical abuse in childhood to prevent addictive NSSI.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The processes of tumor growth and circadian rhythm are intimately intertwined; thus, rewiring circadian metabolism by time-restricted feeding (TRF) may contribute to delaying carcinogenesis. However, research on the effect of a TRF cellular regimen on cancer is lacking. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the circadian signatures of TRF in lung cancer in vitro. METHODS: We first developed a cellular paradigm mimicking in vivo TRF and collected cells for transcriptome analysis. We further confirmed the effect on tumor cells upon 6-h TRF-mimicking (6-h TRFM) by real-time PCR, Lumicycle experiments, CCK-8, and flow cytometry assays. RESULTS: We found that A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells treated with 6-h TRFM conditions displayed robust diurnal rhythms of transcriptomes, as well as modulation of the core clock genes relative to other different cellular regimens used in this study, including the fasting-mimicking conditions (ie, short-term starvation) and the serum-free regime. Notably, pathway analysis of oscillating genes exclusively in 6-h TRFM showed that some circadian genes were enriched in tumor-related pathways, such as the oxytocin signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, and pentose and glucuronate interconversions. Moreover, in line with the circadian pathway enrichment results, 6-h TRFM robustly inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells, lung adenocarcinoma H460 cells, esophageal carcinoma Eca-109 cells, and breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide the first in vitro mimicking medium for TRF intervention and indicate that 6-h TRFM is sufficient to reprogram the circadian signatures of lung adenocarcinoma cells and inhibit the progression of multiple tumors.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to compare the safety of the laryngeal mask airway ProSeal (PLMA) and the streamlined liner of the pharynx airway (SLIPA) during general anesthesia. DESIGN: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Two authors performed searches of Embase, Web of Science, and PubMed to identify clinical trials that compared PLMA and SLIPA in patients receiving general anesthesia. Relative risk (RR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to pool the dichotomous data. The mean difference (MD) and the associated 95% CI were applied to pool continuous data. RevMan 5.0 software was used for data analysis. FINDINGS: A total of 15 studies with 1263 patients were included. There was no significant difference between PLMA and SLIPA in the rate of insertion success on the first attempt (RR = 1.02, 95% CI [0.95, 1.09], P = .59), airway sealing pressure (MD = 0.75, 95% CI [-0.09, 1.58], P = .08) and the incidence of a sore throat (RR = 0.85, 95% CI [0.7, 1.04], P = .12). The insertion time of PLMA was shorter than SLIPA (MD = 5.24, 95% CI [0.51, 9.98], P = .03), and the incidence of bloodstaining on the device was lower (RR = 0.72, 95% CI [0.55, 0.94], P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: Both devices have a high rate of insertion success on the first attempt and airway sealing pressure. But PLMA has a shorter insertion time and less incidence of blood staining, which is more advantageous than SLIPA.

ABSTRACT

2D layer Ti3 C2 Tx material attracts enormous attention in lithium ion energy storage field owing to the unique surface chemistry properties, but the material still suffers from restacking issue and the restriction on capacity. Herein, copper phosphide (Cu3 P) nanostructures@Ti3 C2 Tx composites are prepared by the in situ generation of Cu-BDC precursor in the bulk material followed with phosphorization. The uniformly distributed copper phosphide nanostructures effectively expand the interlayer spacing promoting the structural stability, and achieves the effective connection with the bulk material accelerating the diffusion and migration of lithium ions. The electrochemical activity of Cu3 P also provides more lithium ion active sites for lithium storage. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis verifies that Ti─O─P bond with strong covalency allows the upper shift of maximum valence band and Fermi level, stimulating the charge transportation between Cu3 P and the bulk Ti3 C2 Tx for better electrode kinetics. 3Cu3 P@Ti3 C2 Tx exhibits excellent rate performance of 165.4 mAh g-1 at 3000 mA g-1 and the assembled 3Cu3 P@Ti3 C2 Tx //AC Lithium-ion hybrid capacitorsLIC exhibits superior energy density of 93.0 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 2367.3 W kg-1 . The results suggest that the interfacial modification of Ti3 C2 Tx with transition metal phosphides will be advantageous to its high energy density application in lithium-ion storage.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has suggested an oncogenic effect of diurnal disruption on cancer progression. To test whether targeting circadian rhythm by dietary strategy suppressed lung cancer progression, we adopted 6-h time-restricted feeding (TRF) paradigm to elucidate whether and how TRF impacts lung cancer progression. METHODS: This study used multiple lung cancer cell lines, two xenograft mouse models, and a chemical-treated mouse lung cancer model. Stable TIM-knockdown and TIM-overexpressing A549 cells were constructed. Cancer behaviors in vitro were determined by colony formation, EdU proliferation, wound healing, transwell migration, flow cytometer, and CCK8 assays. Immunofluorescence, pathology examinations, and targeted metabolomics were also used in tumor cells and tissues. mCherry-GFP-LC3 plasmid was used to detect autophagic flux. RESULTS: We found for the first time that compared to normal ad libitum feeding, 6-h TRF inhibited lung cancer progression and reprogrammed the rhythms of metabolites or genes involved in glycolysis and the circadian rhythm in tumors. After TRF intervention, only timeless (TIM) gene among five lung cancer-associated clock genes was found to consistently align rhythm of tumor cells to that of tumor tissues. Further, we demonstrated that the anti-tumor effect upon TRF was partially mediated by the rhythmic downregulation of the TIM and the subsequent activation of autophagy. Combining TRF with TIM inhibition further enhanced the anti-tumor effect, comparable to treatment efficacy of chemotherapy in xenograft model. CONCLUSIONS: Six-hour TRF inhibits lung cancer progression and reshapes circadian metabolism, which is partially mediated by the rhythmic downregulation of the TIM and the subsequent upregulation of autophagy.

ABSTRACT

The introduction of a superlattice structure into layered oxide cathode materials is a novel strategy to improve the structural stability of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the superlattice structure gradually disappears during cycling, which shortens the long life of SIBs. Here, the highly electronegative Zn is introduced into a P2-type layered oxide to regulate the superlattice structure. The obtained P2-Na0.80Li0.13Ni0.20Zn0.03Mn0.64O2 exhibits excellent cycling performance (the capacity retention is 96.7% after 100 cycles at 0.5C) and rate capability (95.8 mAh g-1 at 5C). Zn effectively inhibits the Li migration and the Mn dissolution, which ensures the integrity of the Li/Mn superlattice structure during long cycling, thus achieving an ultralong cycling life of SIBs. The introduction of Zn dramatically increases the length of the c-axis, leading to a faster de-embedding rate of Na+ and a better diffusion kinetics. Meanwhile, the larger pristine volume can withstand more stress/strain due to the sharp increase in the level of O-O repulsion during the desodiation process. In addition, Raman test results show that Zn can inhibit the Na+/vacancy ordering transition and improve the structural stability. This study confirms the feasibility of a Zn-regulated superlattice structure. It provides inspiration for the construction of stable layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs.

ABSTRACT

Phoresy is one of the most distinctive relationships between mites and insects, and the off-host interaction between phoretic mites and their carriers is the most critical factor sustaining the phoretic association. As phoretic associations commonly occur in temporary habitats, little is known about off-host interactions between phoronts and carriers. However, an off-host interaction has been reported, in which the plant-mediated competition between a phoretic gall mite, Aceria pallida, and its psyllid vector, Bactericera gobica, after detachment decreases leaf abscission caused by B. gobica and then directly facilitates their phoretic association. In this obligate phoresy, A. pallida seasonally attaches to B. gobica for overwinter survival and they share the same host plant, Lycium barbarum, during the growing season. It is unknown how the host plant responds to these two herbivores and what plant metabolites are involved in their interspecific interaction. Here, effects of A. pallida and B. gobica on the host plant's transcriptome and metabolome, and on enzymes involved in plant defence, at various infestation stages were studied by inoculating A. pallida and B. gobica either separately or simultaneously on leaves of L. barbarum. Our results showed that (a) A. pallida significantly promoted primary and secondary metabolite accumulation, (b) B. gobica markedly inhibited primary and secondary metabolite accumulation and had little influence on defence enzyme activity, and (c) under simultaneous A. pallida and B. gobica infestation, an intermediate response was predicted. These findings indicate that A. pallida and B. gobica have different effects on host plants, A. pallida inhibits B. gobica mainly by increasing the secondary metabolism of L. barbarum, whereas B. gobica inhibits A. pallida mainly by decreasing the primary metabolism of L. barbarum. In conjunction with our previous research, we speculate that this trade-off in host plant metabolite response between A. pallida and B. gobica after detachment promotes a stable phoretic association.

ABSTRACT

A two-year (2020-2021) survey dataset of six water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), soluble reactive phosphate (SRP), and petroleum pollutants) was used to investigate their spatial distribution in the Bohai Sea and quantify their potential sources. There were significant differences in spatial distribution of the parameters. High concentrations of COD, DIN and SRP were found in three bays, with terrestrial input being the main pollution source. Phosphorus-limiting conditions were present in the Bohai Sea. High petroleum pollutant concentrations were identified in port areas, offshore oilfields, and adjacent areas. The pH was above the global oceanic average and there were no signs of acidification. The contribution of the mixed terrestrial inputs, maritime transportation, and offshore oil exploitation sources, oceanic and associated biotic sources, and seawater-atmosphere exchange and atmospheric deposition sources to water quality were 63.4 %, 8.0 %, and 28.6 %, respectively.

ABSTRACT

It has long been assumed that soil acidification increases reactive iron and/or aluminum (Fe/Al) oxides and promotes Pi sorption onto mineral surfaces, resulting in a decrease in Pi. However, this assumption has seldom been tested in long-term field experiments. Using a 12-year acid addition experiment in a tropical forest, we demonstrated that soil acidification increased the content of noncrystalline Fe and Al oxides by 16.3 % and 27.7 %, respectively; whereas it did not alter the absorbed Pi pool and Pi sorption capacity. Furthermore, soil acidification increased the Fe/Al-bound organic matter content by 82.5 %, causing a 54.9 % reduction in Pi desorption, a 42.3 % decrease in soluble Pi content, and a 9.2 % increase in occluded Pi content. Our findings demonstrate that soil acidification reduces Pi bioavailability by repressing Pi desorption rather than enhancing Pi sorption. These results could be attributed to the enhanced organomineral association, which competes for sorption sites with Pi and promotes the Pi occlusion. However, the interactions between organomineral-Pi have not been incorporated into global land models, which may overestimate ecosystem productivity under future acid rain scenarios.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) is considered the gold standard for differentiating unilateral and bilateral forms of primary aldosteronism. Currently, almost all AVS procedures are performed via femoral vein access. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the success rate and safety of AVS via an antecubital approach. METHODS: In a retrospective multicenter study involving 7 Chinese medical centers, patients with primary aldosteronism who underwent AVS via an antecubital approach between January 2012 and December 2018 were analyzed. Successful sampling was determined by a selectivity index (cortisol in the adrenal vein/cortisol in inferior vena cava) greater than 2. RESULTS: A total of 1226 participants (mean age, 47.1 years; 57.9% male) were included. The puncture site was right and left antecubital vein in 1211 (98.8%), and 15 (1.2%) patients. The access of 6 patients (0.5%) was changed to right femoral vein due to the failure of antecubital vein cannulation or anatomic variation of adrenal vein. The success rate of bilateral, right, and left sampling was 91.5%, 94.9%, and 95.1%, respectively. The success rate of bilateral, right, and left sampling increased from 82.9%, 87.1%, and 88.6% during the initial 70 cases (total of initial 10 cases at each center) to 92.0% (P = .012), 95.3% (P = .008), and 95.5% (P = .018) with subsequent cases. Adrenal vein rupture occurred in 5 patients (0.41%), with no sequelae. CONCLUSION: This multicenter study demonstrates that AVS via an antecubital approach is safe and feasible, with a high rate of successful sampling, which may be an alternative to the femoral vein access method.

ABSTRACT

Here, we aimed to study the important cytokines in plasma to identify the aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). 19 unilateral primary aldosteronism (UPA) patients and 19 healthy people were divided into UPA group and Control group, and the serum of bilateral adrenal veins and inferior vena cava collected by adrenal blood sampling (AVS) in UPA patients and the serum from the healthy subjects were all used to detect multiple cytokines by Luminex immunoassays. Additionally, The UPA patients subjected to laparoscopic adrenalectomy were divided into different groups by pathological results for further study. According our results, IP-10, CXCL9 and RANTES were significantly higher in UPA group compared with control group, and the combination of the three cytokines have significant predictive power for predicting UPA, while the correlational analyses demonstrated that IP-10 and CXCL9 were positively correlated with BP and HR, while EGF was positively correlated with HDL. Additionally, IL-1b was suggested to be the most potential diagnostic biomarker to discriminate the APA and unilateral adrenal hyperplasia (UAH). The present findings might suggest a possibility of IP-10, CXCL9 and RANTES served as a sign to help UPA diagnosis and finally used to assist the diagnosis of APA, while IL-1b was suggested to be the most potential diagnostic biomarker to identify the APA from the UAH patients.
