ABSTRACT

The impressive adhesive capacity of marine mussels has inspired various fascinating designs in biomedical fields. Mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels, as a type of promising mussel-inspired material, have attracted much attention due to their minimally invasive property and desirable functions provided by mussel-inspired components. In recent decades, various mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels have been designed and widely applied in numerous biomedical fields. The rational incorporation of mussel-inspired catechol groups endows the injectable hydrogels with the potential to exhibit many properties, including tissue adhesiveness and self-healing, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capabilities, broadening the applications of injectable hydrogels in biomedical fields. In this review, we first give a brief introduction to the adhesion mechanism of mussels and the characteristics of injectable hydrogels. Further, the typical design strategies of mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels are summarized. The methodologies for integrating catechol groups into polymers and the crosslinking methods of mussel-inspired hydrogels are discussed in this section. In addition, we systematically overview recent mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels for biomedical applications, with a focus on how the unique properties of these hydrogels benefit their applications in these fields. The challenges and perspectives of mussel-inspired injectable hydrogels are discussed in the last section. This review may provide new inspiration for the design of novel bioinspired injectable hydrogels and facilitate their application in various biomedical fields.

ABSTRACT

ASFV is the only known double-stranded insect-borne DNA virus, which can rapidly infect domestic pigs and wild boars with ticks as transmission medium. Since it was first discovered in 1921, it quickly spread to all parts of the world and brought huge economic losses to the pig industry all over the world. At present, there is still no safe and effective vaccine for ASFV. Here, we developed a quantum-dot labeled antibody test strip for the detection of antibodies against ASFV pp62. The pp62 protein was labeled with quantum dots, and the antibody test strip was developed uses it in a detection mode of labeled antigen-SPA interceptor-monoclonal antibody quality control. The test strip showed high sensitivity, the positive detection limit of the strip was 1: 106 by continuous multiple dilution using the positive standard serum of ASFV antibody as reference. The test strip showed good specificity, and there was no cross reaction with other swine diseases virus (PCV2, PRRSV, CSFV, PPV). Using the detection results of commercialized kit for African swine fever virus as reference, 80 ASFV antibody negative sera and 4 different ASFV antibody positive sera were detected using the ASFV pp62 quantum-dot labeled antibody test strip. The results were consistent with the commercial kit. This study provides a new detection method for the prevention and control of African swine fever.

ABSTRACT

The African swine fever virus (ASFV), a highly contagious pathogen responsible for African swine fever (ASF), causes significant economic losses in the global pork industry. Due to its large and complex structure, ASFV remains refractory to commercial vaccine development, necessitating the creation of rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic tools for disease control. In this study, quantum dots were conjugated to ASFV p72 protein to establish a fluorescent immunochromatographic assay for detecting ASFV-specific antibodies. The assay test strips contained four adjacent pads arranged sequentially: a sample-application pad, a pad containing mobile antigen-probe conjugate, a nitrocellulose readout pad featuring a test line containing immobilised staphylococcal protein A and a control line containing immobilised monoclonal antibodies against the ASFV p72 protein, and an absorbent pad driving the directional flow of liquid via capillary action. The resulting fluorescence immunochromatographic assay demonstrated highly sensitive and specific ASFV antibody detection in under 15 min. Specificity testing showed no cross-reactivity with serum antibodies against other viruses and sensitivity surpassing that of commercial ASFV antibody colloidal gold immunochromatographic test strips. This novel approach offers rapid detection, excellent specificity, and high sensitivity, and supports the future development of fluorescent immunochromatographic test strips for ASFV antibody detection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia is often involved in tumor microenvironment, and the hypoxia-induced signaling pathways play a key role in aggressive cancer phenotypes, including angiogenesis, immune evasion, and therapy resistance. However, it is unknown what role genetic variants in the hypoxia-related genes play in survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: We evaluated the associations between 16,092 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 182 hypoxia-related genes and survival outcomes of NSCLC patients. Data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial were used as the discovery dataset, and the Harvard Lung Cancer Susceptibility (HLCS) Study served as the replication dataset. We also performed additional linkage disequilibrium analysis and a stepwise multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis in the PLCO dataset. RESULTS: An independent SNP, ERRFI1 rs28624 A > C, was identified with an adjusted hazards ratio (HR) of 1.31 (95% CI = 1.14-1.51, p = 0.0001) for overall survival (OS). In further analyses, unfavorable genotypes AC and CC, compared with the AA genotype, were associated a worse OS (HR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.03-1.39, p = 0.014) and disease-specific survival (HR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.04-1.42, p = 0.016). Further expression quantitative trait loci analysis indicated that ERRFI1 rs28624C genotypes were significantly associated with higher ERRFI1 mRNA expression levels in the whole blood. Additional analysis showed that high ERRFI1 mRNA expression levels were associated with a worse OS in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that genetic variants in the hypoxia-related gene ERRFI1 may modulate NSCLC survival, potentially through their effect on the gene expression.

ABSTRACT

B cells are adaptive immune cells in the tumor microenvironment and play an important role in tumor development and metastasis. However, the roles of genetic variants of the immunity B cell-related genes in the survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unknown. In the present study, we first evaluated associations between 10,776 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 220 immunity B cell-related genes and survival of NSCLC in a discovery dataset of 1,185 patients from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. We found that 369 SNPs were significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of NSCLC in multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis (P ≤ 0.05, Bayesian false discovery probability ≤ 0.80), of which 18 SNPs were validated in another independent genotyping dataset of 984 patients from the Harvard Lung Cancer Susceptibility (HLCS) Study. We then performed linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, followed by stepwise analysis with a multivariable Cox regression model. Finally, two independent SNPs, inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase D (INPP5D) rs13385922 C>T and exosome component 3 (EXOSC3) rs3208406 A>G, remained significantly associated withNSCLC OS with a combined hazards ratio (HR) of 1.14 (95% confidence interval = 1.06-1.23, P = 2.41×10-4) and 1.20 (95% confidence interval = 1.14-1.28, P = 3.41×10-9), respectively. Furthermore, NSCLC patients with the combination of unfavorable genotypes for these two SNPs were associated with a poor OS (P trend = 0.0002) and disease-specific survival (DSS, P trend < 0.0001) in the PLCO dataset. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis suggested that the INPP5D rs6782875 T allele was significantly correlated with elevated INPP5D mRNA expression levels in normal lung tissues and whole blood samples, while the EXOSC3 rs3208406 G allele was significantly correlated with increased EXOSC3 mRNA expression levels in normal lung tissues. Our data indicated that genetic variants in these immunity B cell-related genes may predict NSCLC survival possibly by influencing the gene expression.

ABSTRACT

Background: Surgical patients often experience intraoperative hypothermia or hyperthermia. However, the relationship of intraoperative hypothermia and hyperthermia with postoperative pulmonary infection (PPI) and surgical site infection (SSI) is unclear. Here, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to address these issues. Methods: Adult patients who underwent major non-cardiac surgery under general anesthesia were eligible for the study and were recruited. Three indices of core body temperature under hypothermia (<36°C) and hyperthermia (>37.3°C) were calculated as mentioned in the following: absolute value (0C), duration of exposure (min), and area under the curve (AUC,°C× min). The outcomes were in-hospital PPI and SSI. The risk-adjusted association of intraoperative hypothermia and hyperthermia with PPI and SSI was determined. Results: The absolute value (the nadir value of hypothermia and the peak value of hyperthermia) was not associated with PPI and SSI. PPI was associated with (1) duration: hypothermia >90 min [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.425, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.131-1.796] and hyperthermia >75 min (aOR: 1.395, 95%CI: 1.208-1.612) and (2) AUC: hypothermia >3,198 (aOR: 1.390, 95%CI: 1.128-1.731) and hyperthermia >7,945 (aOR: 2.045, 95%CI: 1.138-3.676). SSI was associated with (1) duration: hypothermia > 195 min (aOR: 2.900, 95%CI: 1.703-4.937) and hyperthermia >75 min (aOR: 1.395, 95%CI: 1.208-1.612) and (2) AUC: hypothermia >6,946 (aOR: 2.665, 95%CI: 1.618-4.390), hyperthermia >7,945 (aOR: 2.619, 95%CI: 1.625-4.220). Interactions were not observed between hyperthermia and hypothermia on the outcomes. Conclusions: It was observed that intraoperative hypothermia and hyperthermia are associated with postoperative pulmonary infection and surgical site infection in major non-cardiac surgery.

ABSTRACT

A label-free electrochemical immunosensor was developed to rapidly detect tilmicosin (TMC) residues in pork and milk. The immunosensor was constructed by immobilizing a high-affinity monoclonal antibody against TMC on an rGO-PEI-Ag nanocomposite-modified electrode. The rGO-PEI-Ag nanocomposites were prepared by mixing polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with AgNO3 solution. The prepared rGO-PEI-Ag nanocomposites showed good redox activity and conductivity, as characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). During the preparation process, staphylococcal protein A (SPA) was added to targetedly bind the Fc segment of the monoclonal antibody. The immunosensor showed a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.0013 ng/mL, a linear range of 0.01-100 ng/mL, and recoveries ranging from 92.77 to 100.02% in pork and 92.26-101.23% in milk. Furthermore, the immunosensor exhibited good stability, reproducibility, and specificity in detecting TMC in pork and milk real samples.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depression is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) but is underrecognized clinically. Although systematic screening is a recommended strategy to improve depression recognition in primary care practice, it has not been widely used in PD care. METHODS: The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was implemented at 5 movement disorders clinics to screen PD patients. Sites developed processes suited to their clinical workflow. Qualitative interviews with clinicians and patients provided information on feasibility, acceptability, and perceived utility. RESULTS: Prior to implementation, depression screening was recorded in 12% using a formal instrument; 64% were screened informally by clinical interview, and no screening was recorded in 24%. Of 1406 patients seen for follow-up care during the implementation period, 88% were screened, 59% using the GDS-15 (self-administered in 51% and interviewer administered in 8%), a nearly 5-fold increase in formal screening. Lack of clinician or staff time and inability to provide the GDS-15 to the patient ahead of the visit were the most commonly cited reasons for lack of screening using the GDS-15; 378 (45%) patients completing the GDS-15 screened positive for depression, and 137 were enrolled for a 12-month prospective follow-up. Mean GDS-15 scores improved from 8.8 to 7.0 (P < 0.0001) and the 39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire emotional subscore from 42.2 to 36.7 (P = 0.0007). CONCLUSIONS: Depression screening in PD using a formal instrument can be achieved at much higher levels than is currently practiced, but there are barriers to implementing this in clinical practice. An individual site-specific process is necessary to optimize screening rates.

ABSTRACT

Integrated wound care, a sequential process of promoting wound hemostasis, sealing, and healing, is of great clinical significance. However, the wet environment of wounds poses formidable challenges for integrated care. Herein, we developed an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-loaded, dehydrated physical microgel (DPM)-formed adhesive hydrogel for the integrated care of wet wounds. The DPMs were designed using the rational combination of hygroscopicity and reversible crosslinking of physical hydrogels. Unlike regular bioadhesives, which consider interfacial water as a barrier to adhesion, DPMs utilize water to form desirable adhesive structures. The hygroscopicity allowed the DPMs to absorb interfacial water and subsequently, the interfacial adhesion was realized by the interactions between tissue and DPMs. The reversible crosslinks further enabled DPMs to integrate into hydrogels (DPM-Gels), thus achieving wet adhesion. Importantly, the water-absorbing gelation mode of DPMs enabled facile loading of biologically active EGF to promote wound healing. We demonstrated that the DPM-Gels possessed wet tissue adhesive performance, with about 40 times the wet adhesive strength of fibrin glue and about 4 times the burst pressure of human blood pressure. Upon application at the injury site, the EGF-loaded DPM-Gels sequentially promoted efficient wound hemostasis, stable sealing, and quick healing, achieving integrated care of wet wounds.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a series of tetraphenylethene-containing gold(I) complexes with different auxiliary ligands have been synthesized. These complexes were characterized using a variety of techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors were investigated through ultraviolet/visible and photoluminescence spectrum analyses, and dynamic light scattering measurements. Meanwhile, their mechanofluorochromic properties were also studied via solid-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. Intriguingly, all these mononuclear gold(I) molecules functionalized by tetraphenylethene group demonstrated AIE phenomena. Furthermore, five gold(I) complexes possessing diverse auxiliary ligands exhibited distinct fluorescence changes in response to mechanical grinding. For luminogens 2-5, their solids showed reversible mechanofluorochromic behaviors triggered by the mutual transformation of crystalline and amorphous states, while for luminogen 1, blue-green-cyan three-color solid fluorescence conversion was realized by sequential mechanical grinding and solvent fumigation. Based on this stimuli-responsive tricolored fluorescence feature of 1, an information encryption system was successfully constructed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pyroptosis has been implicated in the advancement of various cancers. Triggering pyroptosis within tumors amplifies the immune response, thereby fostering an antitumor immune environment. Nonetheless, few published studies have evaluated associations between functional variants in the pyroptosis-related genes and clinical outcomes of patients with non-oropharyngeal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (NON-ORO HNSCC). METHODS: We conducted an association study of 985 NON-ORO HNSCC patients who were randomly divided into two groups: the discovery group of 492 patients and the replication group of 493 patients. We used Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to examine associations between genetic variants of the pyroptosis-related genes and survival of patients with NON-ORO HNSCC. Bayesian false discovery probability (BFDP) was used for multiple testing correction. Functional annotation was applied to the identified survival-associated genetic variants. RESULTS: There are 8254 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in 82 pyroptosis-related genes, of which 202 SNPs passed multiple testing correction with BFDP < 0.8 in the discovery and six SNPs retained statistically significant in the replication. In subsequent stepwise multivariable Cox regression analysis, two independent SNPs (CHMP4A rs1997996 G > A and PANX1 rs56175344 C > G) remained significant with an adjusted hazard ratios (HR) of 1.31 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09-1.57, p = 0.004) and 0.65 (95% CI = 0.51-0.83, p = 0.0005) for overall survival (OS), respectively. Further analysis of the combined genotypes revealed progressively worse OS associated with the number of unfavorable genotypes (ptrend < 0.0001 and 0.021 for OS and disease-specific survival, respectively). Moreover, both PANX1 rs56175344G and CHMP4A rs1997996A alleles were correlated with reduced mRNA expression levels. CONCLUSIONS: Genetic variants in the pyroptosis pathway genes may predict the survival of NON-ORO HNSCC patients, likely by reducing the gene expression, but our findings need to be replicated by larger studies.

ABSTRACT

This study presents the fabrication and evaluation of a sinusoidal extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) intraocular lens (IOL) based on our previously proposed design approach. The power, through-focus MTF, and surface profile were measured using commercial instruments. Through-focus images of a United States Air Force (USAF) 1951 resolution target formed by the fabricated IOL were compared with Symfony and AR40E under monochromatic and polychromatic light using optical bench testing. Simulations assessed visual acuity (VA) of a pseudophakic model eye with the EDoF IOL, including evaluation of tilt and decentration effects. Results indicate that the base power, add power, and the through-focus MTF@50 lp/mm of the fabricated IOL at a 3 mm pupil size align with the design specifications. The extended-depth-of-focus and imaging performance for the far vision of the fabricated IOL under both monochromatic and polychromatic light conditions at a 3.0 mm pupil diameter is comparable to that of Symfony. In addition, the fabricated IOL exhibits a similar extended-depth-of-focus for three discrete wavelengths. The pseudophakic model eye with the designed EDoF IOL demonstrates a VA exceeding 0.1 logMAR within a defocus range of 2.44 D. The VA is tolerant to both IOL tilt and decentration. These findings demonstrate the promising potential of the sinusoidal EDoF IOL design for future applications in cataract surgery.

ABSTRACT

An iminocoumarin and tetraphenylethylene compound that exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and a significant Stokes shift (Δλ = 135 nm) in THF was created via the Knoevenagel condensation method. TPICBT could also be used as a ratiometric near-infrared fluorescent probe for the naked color identification of F- and H2S. It showed a large red shift (˃ 90 nm), good selectivity, and anti-interference. Test strip detection and cell imaging had both been accomplished using the probe. In addition, the probe could conveniently detect H2S produced during food spoilage without laboratory instruments.

ABSTRACT

Florfenicol (F), an antimicrobial agent exclusive to veterinary use within the chloramphenicol class, is extensively applied as a broad-spectrum remedy for animal diseases. Despite its efficacy, concerns arise over potential deleterious residues in animal-derived edibles, posing threats to human health. This study pioneers an innovative approach, introducing a quantum dot fluorescence-based immunoassay (FLISA) for the meticulous detection of F residues in animal-derived foods and feeds. This method demonstrates heightened sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.3 ng/mL and a quantitative detection range of 0.6-30.4 ng/mL. Method validation, applied to diverse food sources, yields recoveries from 90.4 % to 109.7 %, featuring RSDs within 1.3 % to 8.7 %, the results showed high consistency with the national standard HPLC-MS/MS detection method. These findings underscore the method's accuracy and precision, positioning it as a promising tool for swift and reliable F residue detection, with substantial implications for fortifying food safety monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Integrated wound care through sequentially promoting hemostasis, sealing, and healing holds great promise in clinical practice. However, it remains challenging for regular bioadhesives to achieve integrated care of dynamic wounds due to the difficulties in adapting to dynamic mechanical and wet wound environments. Herein, we reported a type of dehydrated, physical double crosslinked microgels (DPDMs) which were capable of in situ forming highly stretchable, compressible and tissue-adhesive hydrogels for integrated care of dynamic wounds. The DPDMs were designed by the rational integration of the reversible crosslinks and double crosslinks into micronized gels. The reversible physical crosslinks enabled the DPDMs to integrate together, and the double crosslinked characteristics further strengthen the formed macroscopical networks (DPDM-Gels). We demonstrated that the DPDM-Gels simultaneously possess outstanding tensile (∼940 kJ/m3) and compressive (∼270 kJ/m3) toughness, commercial bioadhesives-comparable tissue-adhesive strength, together with stable performance under hundreds of deformations. In vivo results further revealed that the DPDM-Gels could effectively stop bleeding in various bleeding models, even in an actual dynamic environment, and enable the integrated care of dynamic skin wounds. On the basis of the remarkable mechanical and appropriate adhesive properties, together with impressive integrated care capacities, the DPDM-Gels may provide a new approach for the smart care of dynamic wounds. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Integrated care of dynamic wounds holds great significance in clinical practice. However, the dynamic and wet wound environments pose great challenges for existing hydrogels to achieve it. This work developed robust adhesive hydrogels for integrated care of dynamic wounds by designing dehydrated, physical double crosslinked microgels (DPDMs). The reversible and double crosslinks enabled DPDMs to integrate into macroscopic hydrogels with high mechanical properties, appropriate adhesive strength and stable performance under hundreds of external deformations. Upon application at the injury site, DPDM-Gels efficiently stopped bleeding, even in an actual dynamic environment and showed effectiveness in integrated care of dynamic wounds. With the fascinating properties, DPDMs may become an effective tool for smart wound care.

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery often experience hypotension following general anesthesia induction due to insufficient volume. This study aimed to assess whether pre-rehydration guided by carotid corrected flow time (FTc) could mitigate post-induction hypotension induced by general anesthesia. Methods: Patients undergoing resection of gastrointestinal tumors were assigned to either the conventional treatment group (Group C) or the fluid treatment group based on FTc (Group F). Within Group F, patients were further divided into Group A (carotid FTc <340.7 ms) and Group B (carotid FTc ≥340.7 ms) based on pre-rehydration carotid FTc values. Group A patients received pre-rehydration with 250 mL of colloids (hydroxyethyl starch-HES) administered within 15 min until carotid FTc reached ≥340.7 ms to counteract hypovolemia prior to induction. Patients in Group B and Group C received a continuous HES infusion at a rate of 6 mL/kg/h 30 min before induction to compensate for physiological fluid loss. All patients received a perioperative background infusion of 3 mL/kg/h compound sodium chloride, with infusion rates optimized based on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR). The incidence of post-induction hypotension was compared between Group C and Group F, as well as between Group A and Group B. Results: The incidence of hypotension after induction was significantly lower in Group F compared to Group C (26.4% vs. 46.7%, respectively; p < 0.001). Patients in Group A received significantly more pre-rehydration, leading to a greater increase in carotid FTc values compared to Group B (336.5 ± 64.5 vs. 174.3 ± 34.1 ms, p = 0.002). However, no significant difference in carotid FTc values after pre-rehydration was observed between the groups. There was no significant difference in the incidence of hypotension after general anesthesia induction between Group A and Group B (22.9% vs. 28.8%, p = 0.535). Conclusion: Pre-rehydration based on FTc can effectively reduce the occurrence of post-induction hypotension in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery who present with insufficient volume. ABSTRACT

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB) is a heterogeneous disease similar to intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas. These lesions have been recognized as one of the three major precancerous lesions in the biliary tract since 2010. In 2018, Japanese and Korean pathologists reached a consensus, classifying IPNBs into type l and type 2 IPNBs. IPNBs are more prevalent in male patients in East Asia and are closely related to diseases such as cholelithiasis and schistosomiasis. From a molecular genetic perspective, IPNBs exhibit early genetic variations, and different molecular pathways may be involved in the tumorigenesis of type 1 and type 2 IPNBs. The histological subtypes of IPNBs include gastric, intestinal, pancreaticobiliary, or oncocytic subtypes, but type 1 IPNBs typically exhibit more regular and well-organized histological features than type 2 IPNBs and are more commonly found in the intrahepatic bile ducts with abundant mucin. Due to the rarity of these lesions and the absence of specific clinical and laboratory features, imaging is crucial for the preoperative diagnosis of IPNB, with local bile duct dilation and growth along the bile ducts being the main imaging features. Surgical resection remains the optimal treatment for IPNBs, but negative bile duct margins and the removal of lymph nodes in the hepatic hilum significantly improve the postoperative survival rates for patients with IPNBs.

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVE: During cesarean section, hypotension is a frequent side effect of spinal anesthesia. As a sitting or lateral position is required for spinal anesthesia performance, which of these two positions is more likely to cause intraoperative nausea, vomiting, and hypotension is still unknown. This meta-analysis compared the effects of these two positions on maternal hemodynamics and intraoperative nausea and vomiting. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING: Operating room. PATIENTS: This study included 803 patients from 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). INTERVENTIONS: Neuraxial anesthesia in sitting position vs. lateral position. MEASUREMENTS: We chose RCTs comparing the effects of spinal anesthesia in the sitting and lateral positions on maternal hemodynamics by thoroughly searching PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science for articles published from database inception until October 31, 2022. The Cochrane Handbook was used to assess the methodological quality of each RCT; the results were analyzed using RevMan 5.4 software; and the Egger test was used to assess publication bias. MAIN RESULTS: 12 randomised controlled trials with 803 participants were ultimately included in the final analysis. No significant differences were observed between the two positions in terms of the incidence of hypotension(RR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.58-1.16; P = 0.26; I2 = 66%), lowest systolic blood pressure(MD, -0.81; 95% CI, -7.38-5.75; P = 0.81; I2 = 86%), the dose of ephedrine(MD, -1.19; 95% CI, -4.91-2.52; P = 0.53; I2 = 83%), and number of parturients requiring ephedrine(RR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.64-1.46; P = 0.88; I2 = 74%). For the incidence of intraoperative nausea and vomiting, there was no statistical difference between the two positions. CONCLUSION: Parturients undergoing elective cesarean section under spinal anesthesia in the sitting or lateral position experienced similar incidence of hypotension, and there were no significant differences between these two positions in terms of the amount of ephedrine administered or the number of patients needing ephedrine. In both positions, the frequency of nausea and vomiting was comparable. The ideal position for anesthesia can be chosen based on the preferences and individual circumstances of the parturient and anesthesiologist.

ABSTRACT

Multifunctional carbon materials have revealed distinctive features and excellent performance in the field of catalysis. However, the facile fabrication of bifunctional carbon materials with special wettability and catalytic activity remains a grand challenge in Pickering emulsion catalysis. Herein, we reported one-step construction of bifunctional biochar with superamphiphilicity and catalytic activity directly from the thermolysis of sawdust and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate for enhancing the oxidation of benzyl alcohol in Pickering emulsion. Co-doping of B and F enhanced the hydrophilicity of biochar, and the oleophilicity of biochar was kept simultaneously. Conversion became 4 times using bifunctional biochar compared with blank results during the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. More interestingly, the turnover frequency (TOF) value using bifunctional biochar enhanced 61 % than that employing N-doped superamphiphilic carbon without catalytic activity. Catalytic activities of bifunctional biochar could be ascribed to the existence of different chemical bonds containing the element B. This work paves a path toward rational design of bifunctional biochar materials with special wettability and catalytic activity for greatly enhancing the liquid-liquid biphasic reaction efficiencies.
