ABSTRACT

While simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection is non-pathogenic in naturally infected African nonhuman primate hosts, experimental or accidental infection in rhesus macaques often leads to AIDS. Baboons, widely distributed throughout Africa, do not naturally harbor SIV, and experimental infection of baboons with SIVmac results in transient low-level viral replication. Elucidation of mechanisms of natural immunity in baboons could uncover new targets of antiviral intervention. We tested the hypothesis that an SIVmac adapted to replicate in baboon primary cells will gain the capacity to establish chronic infections in vivo. Here, we generated SIVmac variants in baboon cells through serial passage in PBMC from different donors (SIVbn-PBMC s1), in PBMC from the same donors (SIVbn-PBMC s2), or in isolated CD4 cells from the same donors used for series 2 (SIVbn-CD4). While SIVbn-PBMC s1 and SIVbn-CD4 demonstrated increased replication capacity, SIVbn-PBMC s2 did not. Pharmacological blockade of CCR5 revealed SIVbn-PBMC s1 could more efficiently use available CCR5 than SIVmac, a trait we hypothesize arose to circumvent receptor occupation by chemokines. Sequencing analysis showed that all three viruses accumulated different types of mutations, and that more non-synonymous mutations became fixed in SIVbn-PBMC s1 than SIVbn-PBMC s2 and SIVbn-CD4, supporting the notion of stronger fitness pressure in PBMC from different genetic backgrounds. Testing the individual contribution of several newly fixed SIV mutations suggested that is the additive effect of these mutations in SIVbn-PBMC s1 that contributed to its enhanced fitness, as recombinant single mutant viruses showed no difference in replication capacity over the parental SIVmac239 strain. The replicative capacity of SIVbn-PBMC passage 4 (P4) s1 was tested in vivo by infecting baboons intravenously with SIVbn-PBMC P4 s1 or SIVmac251. While animals infected with SIVmac251 showed the known pattern of transient low-level viremia, animals infected with SIVbn-PBMC P4 s1 had undetectable viremia or viral DNA in lymphoid tissue. These studies suggest that adaptation of SIV to grow in baboon primary cells results in mutations that confer increased replicative capacity in the artificial environment of cell culture but make the virus unable to avoid the restrictive factors generated by a complex multicellular organism.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Use of performance validity tests (PVTs) to assess suboptimal performance has become a recommended feature in neuropsychological evaluations. However, most of the literature has examined the utility of PVTs in primarily non-Hispanic White, monolingual English-speaking samples. Given the continual growth of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations, especially Hispanic/Latin Americans (H/Ls), it is necessary to provide an updated review on the available literature involving the use of PVTs in H/L adults. Methods: We conducted a systematic review that examined the available literature surrounding use of performance validity measures in H/L adults. This review identified evidence for the utility of PVTs in assessing invalid performance in H/Ls and compiled psychometric properties related to these measures, specifically rates of specificity and sensitivity when available. Results: We identified six standalone and four embedded performance validity measures that have been examined in H/Ls. The Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) was identified as the PVT most studied in various H/L heritage groups. Across the studies reviewed, adjustments to cutoff scores are generally recommended for the majority of PVTs discussed. Within H/Ls, specificity rates tend to be bolstered when sociocultural factors, like education, are considered. Conclusions: Recommended cutoff scores across the different PVTs reviewed are not typically suitable for use in heritage groups of H/L adults, especially in groups that include adults with lower levels of education and literacy. Therefore, education may need to be considered when applying cutoffs to these populations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection (PASC) after infection with SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy and to characterize associated risk factors. METHODS: In a multicenter cohort study (NIH RECOVER [Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery]-Pregnancy Cohort), individuals who were pregnant during their first SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled across the United States from December 2021 to September 2023, either within 30 days of their infection or at differential time points thereafter. The primary outcome was PASC, defined as score of 12 or higher based on symptoms and severity as previously published by the NIH RECOVER-Adult Cohort, at the first study visit at least 6 months after the participant's first SARS-CoV-2 infection. Risk factors for PASC were evaluated, including sociodemographic characteristics, clinical characteristics before SARS-CoV-2 infection (baseline comorbidities, trimester of infection, vaccination status), and acute infection severity (classified by need for oxygen therapy). Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to estimate associations between these characteristics and presence of PASC. RESULTS: Of the 1,502 participants, 61.1% had their first SARS-CoV-2 infection on or after December 1, 2021 (ie, during Omicron variant dominance); 51.4% were fully vaccinated before infection; and 182 (12.1%) were enrolled within 30 days of their acute infection. The prevalence of PASC was 9.3% (95% CI, 7.9-10.9%) measured at a median of 10.3 months (interquartile range 6.1-21.5) after first infection. The most common symptoms among individuals with PASC were postexertional malaise (77.7%), fatigue (76.3%), and gastrointestinal symptoms (61.2%). In a multivariable model, the proportion PASC positive with vs without history of obesity (14.9% vs 7.5%, adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.65, 95% CI, 1.12-2.43), depression or anxiety disorder (14.4% vs 6.1%, aOR 2.64, 95% CI, 1.79-3.88) before first infection, economic hardship (self-reported difficulty covering expenses) (12.5% vs 6.9%, aOR 1.57, 95% CI, 1.05-2.34), and treatment with oxygen during acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (18.1% vs 8.7%, aOR 1.86, 95% CI, 1.00-3.44) were associated with increased prevalence of PASC. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of PASC at a median time of 10.3 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy was 9.3% in the NIH RECOVER-Pregnancy Cohort. The predominant symptoms were postexertional malaise, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Several socioeconomic and clinical characteristics were associated with PASC after infection during pregnancy. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05172024.

ABSTRACT

Translational studies benefit from experimental designs where laboratory organisms use human-relevant behaviors. One such behavior is decision-making, however studying complex decision-making in rodents is labor-intensive and typically restricted to two levels of cost/reward. We design a fully automated, inexpensive, high-throughput framework to study decision-making across multiple levels of rewards and costs: the REward-COst in Rodent Decision-making (RECORD) system. RECORD integrates three components: 1) 3D-printed arenas, 2) custom electronic hardware, and 3) software. We validated four behavioral protocols without employing any food or water restriction, highlighting the versatility of our system. RECORD data exposes heterogeneity in decision-making both within and across individuals that is quantifiably constrained. Using oxycodone self-administration and alcohol-consumption as test cases, we reveal how analytic approaches that incorporate behavioral heterogeneity are sensitive to detecting perturbations in decision-making. RECORD is a powerful approach to studying decision-making in rodents, with features that facilitate translational studies of decision-making in psychiatric disorders.

ABSTRACT

Adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is a coronal plane deformity often accompanied by sagittal plane malalignment. Surgical correction may involve the major and/or distally-located fractional curves (FCs). Correction of the FC has been increasingly recognized as key to ameliorating radicular pain localized to the FC levels. The present study aims to summarize the literature on the rationale for FC correction in ADS. Three databases were systematically reviewed to identify all primary studies reporting the rationale for correcting the FC in ADS. Articles were included if they were English full-text studies with primary data from ADS ( ≥ 18 years old) patients. Seventy-four articles were identified, of which 12 were included after full-text review. Findings suggest FC correction with long-segment fusion terminating at L5 increases the risk of distal junctional degeneration as compared to constructs instrumenting the sacrum. Additionally, circumferential fusion offers greater FC correction, lower reoperation risk, and shorter construct length. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques may offer effective radiographic correction and improve leg pain associated with foraminal stenosis on the FC concavity, though experiences are limited. Open surgery may be necessary to achieve adequate correction of severe, highly rigid deformities. Current data support major curve correction in ASD where the FC concavity and truncal shift are concordant, suggesting that the FC contributes to the patient's overall deformity. Circumferential fusion and the use of kickstand rods can improve correction and enhance the stability and durability of long constructs. Last, MIS techniques show promise for milder deformities but require further investigation.

Fluid management in obstetric care is crucial due to the complex physiological conditions of pregnancy, which complicate clinical manifestations and fluid balance management. This expert review examines the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to evaluate and monitor the response to fluid therapy in pregnant patients. Pregnancy induces significant physiological changes, including increased cardiac output and glomerular filtration rate, decreased systemic vascular resistance, and plasma oncotic pressure. Conditions like preeclampsia further complicate fluid management due to decreased intravascular volume and increased capillary permeability. Traditional methods of assessing fluid volume status, such as physical examination and invasive monitoring, are often unreliable or inappropriate. POCUS provides a non-invasive, rapid, and reliable means to assess fluid responsiveness, which is essential in managing fluid therapy in pregnant patients. This review details various POCUS modalities used to measure dynamic changes in fluid status, focusing on the evaluation of the inferior vena cava (IVC), lung ultrasound (Lung US), and the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT). IVC ultrasound in spontaneously breathing patients determines diameter variability, predicting fluid responsiveness and being feasible even late in pregnancy. Lung ultrasound is critical for detecting early signs of pulmonary edema before clinical symptoms arise and is more accurate than traditional radiography. The LVOT velocity-time integral (VTI) assesses stroke volume response to fluid challenges, providing a quantifiable measure of cardiac function, especially beneficial in critical care settings where rapid and accurate fluid management is essential. The expert review synthesizes current evidence and practice guidelines, suggesting integrating POCUS as a fundamental aspect of fluid management in obstetrics. It calls for ongoing research to enhance techniques and validate their use in broader clinical settings, aiming to improve outcomes for pregnant patients and their babies by preventing complications associated with both under- and over-resuscitation.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by muscle mass loss. Skeletal muscle is capable of producing and secreting different molecules called myokines, and apelin is one of them. The literature contains contradictory data on the relationship between apelin and sarcopenia. We decided to investigate the role of apelin in sarcopenia in subjects with disease-related malnutrition (DRM), a group of patients with a high rate of sarcopenia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 83 elderly patients with DRM assessed according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria were included in the study, with a mean age of 69.9±3.8 years. Anthropometric data, muscle mass by ultrasound at the rectus femoris quadriceps (RFQ) level, bioimpedance [skeletal muscle mass (SMM), appendicular SMM (aSMM) and aSMM index (aSMMI)], dynamometry, biochemical parameters, dietary intake, circulating apelin levels were determined in all patients. RESULTS: a total of 33 patients (37.9%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia, while 54 patients did not present sarcopenia (60.1%). Body weight (-5.5±2.0 kg, p=0.01), calf circumference (-1.9±0.2 cm, p=0.02), phase angle (-0.6±0.2º, p=0.01), reactance (-6.8±2.3 Ohms, p=0.03), resistance (-38.8±12.3 Ohms, p=0.04), SMM (-2.2±0.3 kg, p=0.04), aSMM (-2.2±0.2 kg, p=0.03) and aSMMI (-0.6±0.2 kg, p=0.02), dominant muscle area (-0.6±0.2 cm2, p=0.04), dominant Y axis (-0.4±0.1 cm, p=0.03), dominant X/Y axis (1.1±0.3 cm, p=0.04), strength (-5.1±1.3 kg, p=0.01), albumin (-0.9±0.1 g/dl, p=0.02) and prealbumin (-4.6±0.7 mg/dl, p=0.02) were worse in patients with sarcopenia than non-sarcopenic patients. Circulating apelin levels were similar in both groups. No significant correlation of apelin levels was detected, either with bioimpedance data or with muscle ultrasonography data. The multivariant analysis did not detect a significant association of apelin with the presence of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows a lack of association between apelin and sarcopenia in elderly malnourished patients.

ABSTRACT

In nature, bacteria often survive in a stationary state with low metabolic activity. Phages use the metabolic machinery of the host cell to replicate, and, therefore, their efficacy against non-dividing cells is usually limited. Nevertheless, it was previously shown that the Staphylococcus epidermidis phage SEP1 has the remarkable capacity to actively replicate in stationary-phase cells, reducing their numbers. Here, we studied for the first time the transcriptomic profiles of both exponential and stationary cells infected with SEP1 phage using RNA-seq to gain a better understanding of this rare phenomenon. We showed that SEP1 successfully takes over the transcriptional apparatus of both exponential and stationary cells. Infection was, however, delayed in stationary cells, with genes within the gp142-gp154 module putatively implicated in host takeover. S. epidermidis responded to SEP1 infection by upregulating three genes involved in a DNA modification system, with this being observed already 5 min after infection in exponential cells and later in stationary cells. In stationary cells, a significant number of genes involved in translation and RNA metabolic and biosynthetic processes were upregulated after 15 and 30 min of SEP1 infection in comparison with the uninfected control, showing that SEP1 activates metabolic and biosynthetic pathways necessary to its successful replication.IMPORTANCEMost phage-host interaction studies are performed with exponentially growing cells. However, this cell state is not representative of what happens in natural environments. Additionally, most phages fail to replicate in stationary cells. The Staphylococcus epidermidis phage SEP1 is one of the few phages reported to date to be able to infect stationary cells. Here, we unveiled the interaction of SEP1 with its host in both exponential and stationary states of growth at the transcriptomic level. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for a better implementation of phage therapy since phages able to infect stationary cells could be more efficient in the treatment of recalcitrant infections.

ABSTRACT

Latin America faces a significant public health challenge due to the high prevalence of obesity and its associated diseases. Metabolic and bariatric surgery is effective and safe to treat obesity when other treatments fail; however, its implementation in Latin America remains unsatisfactory. This review explores the current status, challenges, and innovations of metabolic and bariatric surgery in Latin America. We searched peer-reviewed journals in English and Spanish for relevant articles published between 1998 and 2023. We found that more than 20% of the Latin American population is affected by obesity. Unfortunately, only a limited number of patients have access to metabolic and bariatric surgery due to high cost, limited availability, and shortage of specialists. The review found that ongoing clinical trials are being conducted in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela, indicating some regional progress. However, published studies remain low in number compared with other regions. Furthermore, we summarized the clinical outcomes, risks, and perioperative assessments associated with metabolic and bariatric surgery. We discussed potential strategies to enhance the availability and affordability of this intervention. This review emphasizes the significance of metabolic and bariatric surgery in addressing the obesity pandemic, specifically for Latin America, and proposes directions for future research and innovation.

ABSTRACT

Infection with murine typhus may be associated with significant morbidity. With nonspecific symptoms and laboratory abnormalities, diagnosis may be challenging. In this case, a pregnant patient presented with complaints of fevers and myalgias. Her laboratory results included severe transaminitis as well as thrombocytopenia and hyponatremia. She ultimately required vasopressor support and intensive care unit admission despite fluid resuscitation and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Empiric doxycycline was initiated due to suspicion for murine typhus, which laboratory testing later confirmed. Her clinical status improved with these interventions. This was a severe case of murine typhus resulting in septic shock and ischemic hepatitis. It is important to know the typical findings of murine typhus and consider it in a differential diagnosis, especially when practicing in endemic areas.

ABSTRACT

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is an additive manufacturing technique with micron-scale resolution that is rapidly gaining ground for a range of biomedical applications. TPP is particularly attractive for the creation of microscopic three-dimensional structures in biocompatible and noncytotoxic resins. Here, TPP is used to develop microfluidic interfaces which provide chronic fluidic access to the brain of preclinical research models. These microcatheters can be used for either convection-enhanced delivery (CED) or for the repeated collection of liquid biopsies. In a brain phantom, infusions with the micronozzle result in more localized distribution clouds and lower backflow compared to a control catheter. In mice, the delivery interface enables faster, more precise, and physiologically less disruptive fluid injections. A second microcatheter design enables repeated, longitudinal sampling of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) over time periods as long as 250 days. Moreover, further in vivo studies demonstrate that the blood-CSF barrier is intact after chronic implantation of the sampling interface and that samples are suitable for downstream molecular analysis for the identification of nucleic acid- or peptide-based biomarkers. Ultimately, the versatility of this fabrication technique implies a great translational potential for simultaneous drug delivery and biomarker tracking in a range of human neurological diseases.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nutritional ketosis synergistically with body-weight loss induced by a very-low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) has proven to be effective in improving obesity-related pathophysiology. Recently, growing attention has been focused on the relation between erythropoietin (EPO) and obesity. Thus, this study aims to investigate whether nutritional ketosis and weight loss induced by a VLCKD modify the circulating levels of EPO in patients with obesity in comparison with the effect of low-calorie diet (LCD) or bariatric surgery (BS). METHODS: EPO levels, iron status and body composition parameters were evaluated in 72 patients with overweight or obesity and 27 normal-weight subjects at baseline and after the three different weight-reduction therapies (VLCKD, LCD and BS) in 69 patients with excess body weight. ß-hydroxybutyrate levels were also measured in the VLCKD group. The follow-up was established at 2-3 months and 4-6 months. RESULTS: It was found that EPO levels were higher in morbid obesity and correlated with higher basal weight, fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) in the overall sample. High baseline EPO levels were also correlated with higher impact on the course of weight loss and changes in FM and FFM induced by the three weight-loss interventions. Furthermore, the VLCKD induced a decrease in EPO levels coinciding with maximum ketosis, which was maintained over time, while statistically significant changes were not observed after LCD and BS. CONCLUSION: The obesity-related increased EPO levels are restored after VLCKD intervention at the time of maximum ketosis, suggesting a potential role of the nutritional ketosis induced by the VLCKD. Baseline EPO levels could be a biomarker of response to a weight-loss therapy.

Despite the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy, studies focusing exclusively on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) admissions remain limited. This study investigates the impact of maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, and/or crack, on neonatal outcomes among infants admitted to three Brazilian NICUs. Additionally, the investigation explores the impact of substance use on DNA damage in newborns. Over a one-year period, data from 254 newborns were collected through medical records, accompanied by blood samples. Findings revealed that 16.1% of newborns had mothers reporting substance use during pregnancy. Significant associations were found between maternal substance use and adverse neonatal outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and sexually transmitted infections. Maternal variables linked to substance use encompassed non-white skin color, low education, non-masonry housing, lower income, diseases in other children, and fewer prenatal consultations. Notably, neonatal DNA damage showed no significant association with substance use. Our results underscore the substantial impact of maternal substance use on NICU-admitted infants, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions that address both neonatal health and maternal well-being, thereby underscoring the crucial role of comprehensive care in NICU settings.

Nucleophilic and non-nucleophilic bases have been employed in anionic oligomerization of unsaturated δ-valerolactone (3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one) (1). Compared to the seminal findings with 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD), the unsaturated lactone reacts with guanidines, disilazanes, and phosphazenes both in bulk and in solution with higher productivities and activities, reaching full conversion with turnover frequencies up to 382 h-1. Additionally, reactions using phosphazenes and NaHMDS were active at 1 mol % catalyst loadings both in solvent and in bulk monomer at room temperature. Characterization of the reaction products by 1H, 13C, FTIR, MALDI-MS, tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) revealed microstructural differences dependent on the nucleophilicity of the organocatalytic base and reaction conditions. The products from phosphazene-catalyzed reactions are consistent with selective vinylogous 1,4-conjugate addition, whereas both conjugate addition and ring-opening mechanisms are observed in TBD. DSC reveals that these microstructures can be tuned to have a Tg range between -18 and 80 °C, while SEC and MALDI-MS reveal that only low molar mass oligomers are formed (748-5949 g/mol). From these results, an approach for selectively favoring the vinylogous 1,4-conjugate addition pathway is obtained over ring-opening reactivity.

The failure rate of restaurants is high in many countries, primarily because of the complex relationships between services and customers. Therefore, improving restaurant customer experience is a significant challenge for entrepreneurs. This multi-dimensional experience encompasses several aspects that may or may not be related to food consumption. Many restaurant owners can avoid bankruptcy if they understand theories of service quality and the factors involved. The objective of this research is to identify and summarize known important factors that lead consumers to choose, patronize or be satisfied with a restaurant. The research question for this review is: What are the important factors that influence consumers (population) to choose, patronize, or be satisfied with a restaurant  (outcome)? Therefore, we conducted an integrative review to address this question. We included 111 studies and identified 117 factors/indicators related to consumer satisfaction and restaurant choices. First, we grouped these factors into four categories based on the Big Four restaurant attributes: atmosphere, food, service, and price & value. Four categories emerged based on consumer- and business-related aspects: behavioral intentions, values and beliefs, experiences, and companies. The "food" category is the most important factor in consumer choice and experience. However, the importance of this category may vary depending on the situation (e.g., lunch, dinner, weekends, weekdays) and should be carefully considered, as all categories were relevant but intricate. Such factors are associated with many positive outcomes, such as satisfaction, loyalty, brand love, patronization, and intent to visit and revisit.

ABSTRACT

The current study evaluated the reliability and validity of a novel, performance-based banking task in 60 younger (18-34 years) and 60 older (50-85 years) adults. All participants completed the Telephone-based Daily Instrumental Activities of Living (T-DIAL) using interactive voice response technology to complete a series of mock actions with a financial institution via telephone. The T-DIAL showed strong inter-rater reliability and internal consistency. T-DIAL accuracy was significantly and independently related to better self-reported instrumental activities of daily living and executive functions at a large effect size. Findings from this study provided preliminary supportive evidence for the reliability and validity of the T-DIAL, which had robust associations with manifest everyday functioning and higher-order cognitive ability. Future work is needed on the psychometrics (e.g. test-retest reliability, normative standards), and construct validity (e.g. diagnostic accuracy) of the T-DIAL in neurocognitive disorders and under-served communities for whom remote evaluations might be particularly relevant.

ABSTRACT

Histamine, a primary biogenic amine (BA) generated through the decarboxylation of amino acids, concentration increases in protein-rich foods during deterioration. Thus, its detection plays a crucial role in ensuring food safety and quality. This study introduces an innovative approach involving the direct integration of dopamine onto gold nanoparticles (DCt-AuNP), aiming at rapid histamine colorimetric detection. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the aggregation of uniformly distributed spherical DCt-AuNPs with 12.02 ± 2.53 nm sizes upon the addition of histamine to DCt-AuNP solution. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra demonstrated the disappearance of the dicarboxy acetone peak at 1710 cm-1 along with the formation of well-defined peaks at 1585 cm-1, and 1396 cm-1 associated with the N-H bending modes and the aromatic C=C bond stretching vibration in histamine molecule, respectively, confirming the ligand exchange and interactions of histamine on the surface of DCt-AuNPs. The UV-vis spectra of the DCt-AuNP solution exhibited a red shift and a reduction in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak intensity at 518 nm along with the emergence of the 650 nm peak, signifying aggregation DCt-AuNPs with increasing histamine concentration. Notably, color transitions from wine-red to deep blue were observed in the DCt-AuNP solution in response to histamine, providing a reliable colorimetric signal. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) characterization showed a significant increase in the hydrodynamic diameter, from ∼15 to ∼1690 nm, confirming the interparticle cross-linking of DCt-AuNPs in the presence of histamine. This newly developed DCt-AuNP sensor provides colorimetric results in less than a minute that exhibits a remarkable naked-eye histamine detection threshold of 1.57 µM and a calculated detection limit of 0.426 µM, making it a promising tool for the rapid and sensitive detection of histamine.

ABSTRACT

This work challenges the conventional approach of using NdIII 4F3/2 lifetime changes for evaluating the experimental NdIII → YbIII energy transfer rate and efficiency. Using near-infrared (NIR) emitting Nd:Yb mixed-metal coordination polymers (CPs), synthesized via solvent-free thermal grinding, we demonstrate that the NdIII [2H11/2 → 4I15/2] → YbIII [2F7/2 → 2F5/2] pathway, previously overlooked, dominates energy transfer due to superior energy resonance and J-level selection rule compatibility. This finding upends the conventional focus on the NdIII [4F3/2 → 4I11/2] → YbIII [2F7/2 → 2F5/2] transition pathway. We characterized Nd0.890Yb0.110(BTC)(H2O)6 as a promising cryogenic NIR thermometry system and employed our novel energy transfer understanding to perform simulations, yielding theoretical thermometric parameters and sensitivities for diverse Nd:Yb ratios. Strikingly, experimental thermometric data closely matched the theoretical predictions, validating our revised model. This novel perspective on NdIII → YbIII energy transfer holds general applicability for the NdIII/YbIII pair, unveiling an important spectroscopic feature with broad implications for energy transfer-driven materials design.

ABSTRACT

We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5)8(LnO1.5)4(O)(C5H8O2)6(EtOH)2(CH3CN)2⋅2CH3CN (where Ln = Tb, 1; Tb/Eu, 2; and Gd, 3), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+/Eu3+-related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1, theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5D4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb3+/Eu3+ analog 2, with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5D4→7F5 (Tb3+) and 5D0→7F2 (Eu3+) transitions in the range 11-373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2, operating in the range 11-373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K-1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.
