ABSTRACT

While humans are highly cooperative, they can also behave spitefully. Yet spite remains understudied. Spite can be normatively driven and while previous experiments have found some evidence that cooperation and punishment may spread via social learning, no experiments have considered the social transmission of spiteful behaviour. Here we present an online experiment where, following an opportunity to earn wealth, we asked participants to choose an action towards an anonymous partner across a full spectrum of social behaviour, from spite to altruism. In accordance with cultural evolutionary theory, participants were presented with social information that varied in source and content. Across six conditions, we informed participants that either the majority or the highest earner had chosen to behave spitefully, neutrally or altruistically. We found an overall tendency towards altruism, but at lower levels among those exposed to spite compared with altruism. We found no difference between social information that came from the majority or the highest earner. Exploratory analysis revealed that participants' earnings negatively correlated with altruistic behaviour. Our results contrast with previous literature that report high rates of spite in experimental samples and a greater propensity for individuals to copy successful individuals over the majority.

ABSTRACT

A-genome Arachis species (AA; 2n = 2x = 20) are commonly used as secondary germplasm sources in cultivated peanut breeding, Arachis hypogaea L. (AABB; 2n = 4x = 40), for the introgression of various biotic and abiotic stress resistance genes. Genome doubling is critical to overcoming the hybridization barrier of infertility that arises from ploidy-level differences between wild germplasm and cultivated peanuts. To develop improved genome doubling methods, four trials of various concentrations of the mitotic inhibitor treatments colchicine, oryzalin, and trifluralin were tested on the seedlings and seeds of three A-genome species, A. cardenasii, A. correntina, and A. diogoi. A total of 494 seeds/seedlings were treated in the present four trials, with trials 1 to 3 including different concentrations of the three chemical treatments on seedlings, and trial 4 focusing on the treatment period of 5 mM colchicine solution treatment of seeds. A small number of tetraploids were produced from the colchicine and oryzalin gel treatments of seedlings, but all these tetraploid seedlings reverted to diploid or mixoploid states within six months of treatment. In contrast, the 6-h colchicine solution treatment of seeds showed the highest tetraploid conversion rate (6-13% of total treated seeds or 25-40% of surviving seedlings), and the tetraploid plants were repeatedly tested as stable tetraploids. In addition, visibly and statistically larger leaves and flowers were produced by the tetraploid versions of these three species compared to their diploid versions. As a result, stable tetraploid plants of each A-genome species were produced, and a 5 mM colchicine seed treatment is recommended for A-genome and related wild Arachis species genome doubling.

ABSTRACT

The density of epidermal ridges in a fingerprint varies predictably by age and sex. Archaeologists are therefore interested in using recovered fingerprints to learn about the ancient people who produced them. Recent studies focus on estimating the age and sex of individuals by measuring their fingerprints with one of two similar metrics: mean ridge breadth (MRB) or ridge density (RD). Yet these attempts face several critical problems: expected values for adult females and adolescent males are inherently indistinguishable, and inter-assemblage variation caused by biological and technological differences cannot be easily estimated. Each of these factors greatly decreases the accuracy of predictions based on individual prints, and together they condemn this strategy to relative uselessness. However, information in fingerprints from across an assemblage can be pooled to generate a more accurate depiction of potter demographics. We present a new approach to epidermal ridge density analysis using Bayesian mixture models with the following key benefits:•Age and sex are estimated more accurately than existing methods by incorporating a data-driven understanding of how demographics and ridge density covary.•Uncertainty in demographic estimates is automatically quantified and included in output.•The Bayesian framework can be easily adapted to fit the unique needs of different researchers.

ABSTRACT

We investigated whether machine learning (ML) analysis of ICU monitoring data incorporating volumetric capnography measurements of mean alveolar PCO2 can partition venous admixture (VenAd) into its shunt and low V/Q components without manipulating the inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2). From a 21-compartment ventilation / perfusion (V/Q) model of pulmonary blood flow we generated blood gas and mean alveolar PCO2 data in simulated scenarios with shunt values from 7.3% to 36.5% and a range of FiO2 settings, indirect calorimetry and cardiac output measurements and acid- base and hemoglobin oxygen affinity conditions. A 'deep learning' ML application, trained and validated solely on single FiO2 bedside monitoring data from 14,736 scenarios, then recovered shunt values in 500 test scenarios with true shunt values 'held back'. ML shunt estimates versus true values (n = 500) produced a linear regression model with slope = 0.987, intercept = -0.001 and R2 = 0.999. Kernel density estimate and error plots confirmed close agreement. With corresponding VenAd values calculated from the same bedside data, low V/Q flow can be reported as VenAd-shunt. ML analysis of blood gas, indirect calorimetry, volumetric capnography and cardiac output measurements can quantify pulmonary oxygenation deficits as percentage shunt flow (V/Q = 0) versus percentage low V/Q flow (V/Q > 0). High fidelity reports are possible from analysis of data collected solely at the operating FiO2.

ABSTRACT

Using computer simulation we investigated whether machine learning (ML) analysis of selected ICU monitoring data can quantify pulmonary gas exchange in multi-compartment format. A 21 compartment ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) model of pulmonary blood flow processed 34,551 combinations of cardiac output, hemoglobin concentration, standard P50, base excess, VO2 and VCO2 plus three model-defining parameters: shunt, log SD and mean V/Q. From these inputs the model produced paired arterial blood gases, first with the inspired O2 fraction (FiO2) adjusted to arterial saturation (SaO2) = 0.90, and second with FiO2 increased by 0.1. 'Stacked regressor' ML ensembles were trained/validated on 90% of this dataset. The remainder with shunt, log SD, and mean 'held back' formed the test-set. 'Two-Point' ML estimates of shunt, log SD and mean utilized data from both FiO2 settings. 'Single-Point' estimates used only data from SaO2 = 0.90. From 3454 test gas exchange scenarios, two-point shunt, log SD and mean estimates produced linear regression models versus true values with slopes ~ 1.00, intercepts ~ 0.00 and R2 ~ 1.00. Kernel density and Bland-Altman plots confirmed close agreement. Single-point estimates were less accurate: R2 = 0.77-0.89, slope = 0.991-0.993, intercept = 0.009-0.334. ML applications using blood gas, indirect calorimetry, and cardiac output data can quantify pulmonary gas exchange in terms describing a 20 compartment V/Q model of pulmonary blood flow. High fidelity reports require data from two FiO2 settings.

ABSTRACT

The past 2 Myr have seen both unprecedented environmental instability and the evolution of the human capacity for complex culture. This, along with the observation that cultural evolution occurs faster than genetic evolution, has led to the suggestion that culture is an adaptation to an unstable environment. We test this hypothesis by examining the ability of human social learning to respond to environmental changes. We do this by inserting human participants (n = 4800) into evolutionary simulations with a changing environment while varying the social information available to individuals across five conditions. We find that human social learning shows some signs of adaptation to environmental instability, including critical social learning, the adoption of up-and-coming traits and, unexpectedly, contrariness. However, these are insufficient to avoid significant fitness declines when the environment changes, and many individuals are highly conformist, which exacerbates the fitness effects of environmental change. We conclude that human social learning reflects a compromise between the competing needs for flexibility to accommodate environmental change and fidelity to accurately transmit valuable cultural information.

ABSTRACT

Ruthenium (Ru) thin films are used as protective caps for the multilayer mirrors in extreme ultraviolet lithography machines. When these mirrors are exposed to atomic hydrogen (H), it can permeate through Ru, leading to the formation of hydrogen-filled blisters on the mirrors. H has been shown to exhibit low solubility in bulk Ru, but the nature of H diffusion through Ru and its contribution to the mechanisms of blistering remain unknown. This work makes use of reactive molecular dynamics simulations to study the influence of imperfections in a Ru film on the behavior of H. For the Ru/H system, a ReaxFF force field which reproduces structures and energies obtained from quantum-mechanical calculations was parametrized. Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed with the newly developed force field to study the effect of tilt and twist grain boundaries on the overall diffusion behavior of H in Ru. Our simulations show that the tilt and twist grain boundaries provide energetically favorable sites for hydrogen atoms and act as sinks and highways for H. They therefore block H transport across their planes and favor diffusion along their planes. This results in the accumulation of hydrogen at the grain boundaries. The strong effect of the grain boundaries on hydrogen diffusion suggests tailoring the morphology of ruthenium thin films as a means to curb the rate of hydrogen permeation.

ABSTRACT

The ductus arteriosus (DA) is a unique fetal vascular shunt, which allows blood to bypass the developing lungs in utero. After birth, changes in complex signaling pathways lead to constriction and permanent closure of the DA. The persistent patency of the DA (PDA) is a common disorder in preterm infants, yet the underlying causes of PDA are not fully defined. Although limits on the availability of human DA tissues prevent comprehensive studies on the mechanisms of DA function, mouse models have been developed that reveal critical pathways in DA regulation. Over 20 different transgenic models of PDA in mice have been described, with implications for human DA biology. Similarly, we enumerate 224 human single-gene syndromes that are associated with PDA, including a small subset that consistently feature PDA as a prominent phenotype. Comparison and functional analyses of these genes provide insight into DA development and identify key regulatory pathways that may serve as potential therapeutic targets for the management of PDA.

ABSTRACT

Neurodevelopmental syndromes due to copy number variation are well-known clinical entities. While the numerical variation of gene-harboring regions has been widely investigated at both molecular and clinical levels, much less is understood about unbalanced expression of long noncoding RNAs. Few studies have been performed on the clinical consequences of such unbalanced expression. Heterozygous deletions of NRXN1 have been well described to cause neuropsychological features. Heterozygous deletion of adjacent long noncoding RNA AK127244, either isolated or combined with partial NRXN1 deletion, was recently reported in association with neurodevelopmental delay. In our retrospective study, we analyze a bicentric cohort of 4 individuals, comprising 2 siblings, which bear an isolated heterozygous deletion in long noncoding RNA AK127244 and present with nonsyndromic neurodevelopmental delay.

ABSTRACT

Prestige-biased social learning (henceforth "prestige-bias") occurs when individuals predominantly choose to learn from a prestigious member of their group, i.e. someone who has gained attention, respect and admiration for their success in some domain. Prestige-bias is proposed as an adaptive social-learning strategy as it provides a short-cut to identifying successful group members, without having to assess each person's success individually. Previous work has documented prestige-bias and verified that it is used adaptively. However, the domain-specificity and generality of prestige-bias has not yet been explicitly addressed experimentally. By domain-specific prestige-bias we mean that individuals choose to learn from a prestigious model only within the domain of expertise in which the model acquired their prestige. By domain-general prestige-bias we mean that individuals choose to learn from prestigious models in general, regardless of the domain in which their prestige was earned. To distinguish between domain specific and domain general prestige we ran an online experiment (n = 397) in which participants could copy each other to score points on a general-knowledge quiz with varying topics (domains). Prestige in our task was an emergent property of participants' copying behaviour. We found participants overwhelmingly preferred domain-specific (same topic) prestige cues to domain-general (across topic) prestige cues. However, when only domain-general or cross-domain (different topic) cues were available, participants overwhelmingly favoured domain-general cues. Finally, when given the choice between cross-domain prestige cues and randomly generated Player IDs, participants favoured cross-domain prestige cues. These results suggest participants were sensitive to the source of prestige, and that they preferred domain-specific cues even though these cues were based on fewer samples (being calculated from one topic) than the domain-general cues (being calculated from all topics). We suggest that the extent to which people employ a domain-specific or domain-general prestige-bias may depend on their experience and understanding of the relationships between domains.

ABSTRACT

An atomistic description of tin deposition on ruthenium and its effect on blistering damage is of great interest in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. In EUV machines, tin debris from the EUV-emitting tin plasma may be deposited on the mirrors in the optical path. Tin facilitates the formation of hydrogen-filled blisters under the ruthenium top layer of the multi-layer mirrors. We have used Density Functional Theory (DFT) to show that tin deposition on a clean ruthenium surface exhibits a film-plus-islands (Stranski-Krastanov) growth mode, with the first atomic layer bonding strongly to the substrate. We find that a single tin layer allows hydrogen to reach the ruthenium surface and subsurface more easily than on clean ruthenium, but hydrogen penetration through the tin film becomes progressively more difficult when more layers are added. The results indicate that hydrogen penetration and blistering occur when only a thin layer of tin is present.

ABSTRACT

Social learning enables adaptive information acquisition provided that it is not random but selective. To understand species typical decision-making and to trace the evolutionary origins of social learning, the heuristics social learners use need to be identified. Here, we experimentally tested the nature of majority influence in the zebra finch. Subjects simultaneously observed two demonstrator groups differing in relative and absolute numbers (ratios 1 : 2/2 : 4/3 : 3/1 : 5) foraging from two novel food sources (black and white feeders). We find that demonstrator groups influenced observers' feeder choices (social learning), but that zebra finches did not copy the majority of individuals. Instead, observers were influenced by the foraging activity (pecks) of the demonstrators and in an anti-conformist fashion. These results indicate that zebra finches are not conformist, but are public information users.

ABSTRACT

Liver transplantation (LT) for children with urea cycle disorders (UCDs) is capable of correcting the enzymatic defect and preventing progressive neurologic injury. We describe the characteristics and outcomes of pediatric LT recipients with UCDs. We identified all pediatric (<18 years) LT candidates with UCDs in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database (February 2002 to September 2020). Multivariable Cox and logistic regression were used to determine risk factors for graft loss and cognitive delay, respectively. Of 424 patients, 1.9% (8/424) experienced waitlist mortality and 95.0% underwent LT (403/424). The most frequently encountered UCDs in our cohort were ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (46.2%), citrullinemia (20.3%), and argininosuccinic aciduria (ASA; 12.9%). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year graft survival rates were 90.4%, 86.3%, and 85.2%, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed a decreased risk of graft loss with increasing weight at LT (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.94-0.99; P = 0.02), male sex (aHR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.28-0.85; P = 0.01), and ASA diagnosis (aHR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.09-0.98; P = 0.047), when adjusting for location (intensive care/hospital/home) and graft type (both P ≥ 0.65). In multivariable logistic regression, waitlist time (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.10; 95% CI, 1.02-1.17; P = 0.009) and male sex (aOR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.02-2.88; P = 0.04) were associated with increased odds of long-term cognitive delay. Waitlist duration is associated with a long-term risk of cognitive delay. Given excellent long-term outcomes, early LT evaluation should be considered in all children with UCDs to prevent progressive neurologic injury and optimize cognitive outcomes.

ABSTRACT

This data article describes the dataset of the International COVID-19 Impact on Parental Engagement Study (ICIPES). ICIPES is a collaborative effort of more than 20 institutions to investigate the ways in which, parents and caregivers built capacity engaged with children's learning during the period of social distancing arising from global COVID-19 pandemic. A series of data were collected using an online survey conducted in 23 countries and had a total sample of 4,658 parents/caregivers. The description of the data contained in this article is divided into two main parts. The first part is a descriptive analysis of all the items included in the survey and was performed using tables and figures. The second part refers to the construction of scales. Three scales were constructed and included in the dataset: 'parental acceptance and confidence in the use of technology', 'parental engagement in children's learning' and 'socioeconomic status'. The scales were created using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Multi-Group Confirmatory Analysis (MG-CFA) and were adopted to evaluate their cross-cultural comparability (i.e., measurement invariance) across countries and within sub-groups. This dataset will be relevant for researchers in different fields, particularly for those interested in international comparative education.

ABSTRACT

Academic journals provide a key quality-control mechanism in science. Yet, information asymmetries and conflicts of interests incentivize scientists to deceive journals about the quality of their research. How can honesty be ensured, despite incentives for deception? Here, we address this question by applying the theory of honest signaling to the publication process. Our models demonstrate that several mechanisms can ensure honest journal submission, including differential benefits, differential costs, and costs to resubmitting rejected papers. Without submission costs, scientists benefit from submitting all papers to high-ranking journals, unless papers can only be submitted a limited number of times. Counterintuitively, our analysis implies that inefficiencies in academic publishing (e.g., arbitrary formatting requirements, long review times) can serve a function by disincentivizing scientists from submitting low-quality work to high-ranking journals. Our models provide simple, powerful tools for understanding how to promote honest paper submission in academic publishing.

ABSTRACT

Incentives for priority of discovery are hypothesized to harm scientific reliability. Here, we evaluate this hypothesis by developing an evolutionary agent-based model of a competitive scientific process. We find that rewarding priority of discovery causes populations to culturally evolve towards conducting research with smaller samples. This reduces research reliability and the information value of the average study. Increased start-up costs for setting up single studies and increased payoffs for secondary results (also known as scoop protection) attenuate the negative effects of competition. Furthermore, large rewards for negative results promote the evolution of smaller sample sizes. Our results confirm the logical coherence of scoop protection reforms at several journals. Our results also imply that reforms to increase scientific efficiency, such as rapid journal turnaround times, may produce collateral damage by incentivizing lower-quality research; in contrast, reforms that increase start-up costs, such as pre-registration and registered reports, may generate incentives for higher-quality research.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this joint guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations to practicing physicians and other healthcare providers on definitive-intent chemoradiotherapy for patients with stage II-IVA nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: The Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and ASCO convened an expert panel of radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgery, and advocacy representatives. The literature search included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials published from 1990 through 2020. Outcomes of interest included survival, distant and locoregional disease control, and quality of life. Expert panel members used this evidence and informal consensus to develop evidence-based guideline recommendations. RESULTS: The literature search identified 108 relevant studies to inform the evidence base for this guideline. Five overarching clinical questions were addressed, which included subquestions on radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy sequence, and concurrent, induction, and adjuvant chemotherapy options. RECOMMENDATIONS: Evidence-based recommendations were developed to address aspects of care related to chemotherapy in combination with RT for the definitive-intent treatment of stage II to IVA NPC.Additional information is available at www.asco.org/head-neck-cancer-guidelines.
