ABSTRACT

Aqueous rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (ARLIBs) are extensively researched due to their inherent safety, typical affordability, and potential high energy density. However, fabricating ARLIBs with both high energy density and power performance remains challenging. Herein, based on cyanoethyl-modified bacterial cellulose nanofibers (CBCNs), a multifunctional fast ion transport framework is developed to construct the flexible free-standing ARLIBs with high areal loading and excellent rate performance. Benefiting from the unique merits of CBCNs, such as ultra-high aspect ratio, excellent toughness, superior adhesion, good lithiophilicity and ideal stability, the flexible free-standing and highly robust electrodes are fabricated and exhibit a long-term stable cycling of 1200 cycles with a high specific capacity of 117 mAh∙g-1 at 15 C. Remarkably, the corresponding full cell with the free-standing high mass loading (45.5 mg∙cm-2) electrodes under the condition of ultra-low addition of battery binder demonstrates a cycle lifespan of over 1000 cycles with a specific capacity of 120 mAh∙g-1 and a capacity decay as low as 0.03% per cycle, which is far superior to those of almost all previous reports. This work provides a strategy for constructing ARLIBs with high energy density and power performance by introducing a unique fast ion transport nanofiber framework.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify factors that influence the severity of tinnitus via a hierarchical multiple linear regression model. Methods: The study was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis. The study included 331 patients experiencing tinnitus as their primary concern, who visited Shanghai Changzheng Hospital of the Navy Medical University between 2019 and 2021. Data on general health status and disease characteristics were collected from all patients. With their consent, participants underwent audiological evaluatons and completed questionnaires to analyze the characteristics of their tinnitus and the factors influencing its severity. Results: The correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between tinnitus frequency, tinnitus loudness, SAS scores, and PSQI scores with THI scores (P < 0.05) among nine examined variables (gender, handedness, employment status, age, BMI, tinnitus frequency, tinnitus loudness, SAS scores, and PSQI scores). The variables that were extracted from the multiple regression were; for the constant; ß = -51.797, t = -4.484, P < 0.001, variable is significant; for the tinnitus loudness; ß = 0.161, t = 2.604, P < 0.05, variable is significant; for the tinnitus frequency; ß = 0.000, t = 1.269, P = 0.206, variable is not significant; for the SAS scores; ß = 1.310, t = 7.685, P < 0.001, variable is significant; for the PSQI scores; ß = 1.680, t = 5.433, P < 0.001, variable is significant. Therefore, the most accurate model for predicting severity in tinnitus patients is a linear combination of the constant, tinnitus loudness, SAS scores, and PSQI scores, Y(Tinnitus severity) = ß 0 + ß 1 (Tinnitus loudness) + ß 2 (SAS scores) + ß 3 (PSQI scores). ß 0, ß 1, ß 2, and ß 3 are -51.797, 0.161, 1.310 and 1.680, respectively. Conclusion: Tinnitus severity is positively associated with loudness, anxiety levels, and sleep quality. To effectively manage tinnitus in patients, it is essential to promptly identify and address these accompanying factors and related symptoms.

Background: Eosinophilic extracellular traps (EETs) are reticular complexes comprising deoxyribonucleic-Acid (DNA) fibers and granule proteins. Aims: EETs play a crucial role in antimicrobial host responses and are pathogenic when overproduced or under degraded. EETs created by eosinophils appear to enable vital immune responses against extra-cellular pathogens, nevertheless, trap overproduction is evident in pathology. Materials & Methods: As considerably research is performed, new data affirmed that EETs can alter the outcome of respiratory ailment. Results: We probe into the disclosure and specificity of EETs produced in reaction to various stimuli and propose a role for those frameworks in ailment pathogenesis and the establishment of chronic, unresolved inflammation. Discussion: Whether EETs can be used as a prospective brand-new target for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of respiratory ailments is a scientific theme worth studying. Conclusion: We probe into the disclosure and specificity of EETs produced in reaction to various stimuli and propose a role for those frameworks in ailment pathogenesis and the establishment of chronic, unresolved inflammation.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: We aimed to investigate mesial temporal lobe abnormalities in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) patients with hypersynchronous (HYP) and low-voltage fast rhythms (LVF) onset identified by stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) and evaluate their diagnostic and prognostic value. METHODS: Fifty-one MTLE patients were categorized as HYP or LVF by SEEG. High-resolution MRI volume-based analysis and 18F-FDG-PET standard uptake values of hippocampal and amygdala subfields were quantified and compared with 57 matched controls. Further analyses were conducted to delineate the distinct pathological characteristics differentiating the two groups. Diagnostic and prognostic prediction performance of these biomarkers were assessed using receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: LVF-onset individuals demonstrated ipsilateral amygdala enlargement (p = 0.048) and contralateral hippocampus hypermetabolism (p = 0.042), pathological results often accompany abnormalities in the temporal lobe cortex, while HYP-onset subjects had significant atrophy (p < 0.001) and hypometabolism (p = 0.013) in ipsilateral hippocampus and its subfields, as well as amygdala atrophy (p < 0.001), pathological results are highly correlated with hippocampal sclerosis. Severe fimbria atrophy was observed in cases of HYP-onset MTLE with poor prognosis (AUC = 0.874). CONCLUSION: Individuals with different seizure-onset patterns display specific morphological and metabolic abnormalities in the amygdala and hippocampus. Identifying these subfield abnormalities can improve diagnostic and prognostic precision, guiding surgical strategies for MTLE.

ABSTRACT

Ribbon synapses of inner hair cells are uniquely designed for ultrafast and indefatigable neurotransmission of the sound. The molecular machinery ensuring the efficient, compensatory recycling of the synaptic vesicles, however, remains elusive. This study showed that hair cell knockout of murine Dmxl2, whose human homolog is responsible for non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss DFNA71, resulted in auditory synaptopathy by impairing synaptic endocytosis and recycling. The mutant mice in the C57BL/6J background of either sex had mild hearing loss with severely diminished wave-I amplitude of the auditory brainstem response. Membrane capacitance measurements of the inner hair cells revealed deficiency in sustained synaptic exocytosis and endocytic membrane retrieval. Consistent with the electrophysiological findings, 3D electron microscopy reconstruction showed reduced reserve pool of synaptic vesicles and endocytic compartments, while the membrane-proximal and ribbon-associated vesicles remain intact. Our results propose an important role of DMXL2 in hair cell endocytosis and recycling of the synaptic vesicles.Significance Statement The molecular basis underlying efficient recycling of the ribbon synaptic vesicles in cochlear hair cells remains elusive. In this study, investigation of a hair cell-specific knockout mouse for Dmxl2 identifies its import roles in endocytosis and recycling of the auditory synaptic vesicles. The mutant mice display auditory synaptopathy, a common feature for noise-induced hearing loss and age-related hearing loss. The inner hair cells show deficiency in sustained synaptic exocytosis and endocytic membrane retrieval with reduced reserve pool of synaptic vesicles and endocytic compartments. Our results provide new insights into the molecular machinery ensuring ultrafast and indefatigable neurotransmission of the sound.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Due to the unique working environment and nature of work in emergency departments, nurses are prone to experiencing compassion fatigue (CF), leading to job burnout and attrition. As more Generation Z (Gen Z) nurses enter the emergency department with distinct personality traits compared to previous generations, studying their experiences with CF will inform future management strategies. METHODS: The qualitative phenomenological research method was utilised to investigate CF among Gen Z emergency nurses at a hospital in Shanghai, China. Data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological analysis method. Study participants were purposively selected. RESULTS: Three main themes and nine sub-themes emerged from the study: secondary traumatic stress, including physiological symptoms, psychological symptoms, and behavioral changes; cumulative effects, including impaired empathy, interference with family life, and post-traumatic growth (PTG); coping strategies, including cognitive reconstruction, seeking support, and facilitating action. CONCLUSIONS: The aim of this study is to investigate the experience of CF among Gen Z emergency nurses, providing managers with a reference for future management strategies. The significance of multi-dimensional support for Gen Z emergency nurses is underscored by our findings. Additionally, interventions that enhance resilience and competency can facilitate their psychological transformation after experiencing CF and promote accelerated personal growth.

ABSTRACT

Research on the severity and prognosis of sepsis with or without progressive delirium is relatively insufficient. We constructed a prediction model of the risk factors for 28-day mortality in patients who developed sepsis or sepsis-associated delirium. The modeling group of patients diagnosed with Sepsis-3 and patients with progressive delirium of related indicators were selected from the MIMIC-IV database. Relevant independent risk factors were determined and integrated into the prediction model. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test were used to evaluate the prediction accuracy and goodness-of-fit of the model. Relevant indicators of patients with sepsis or progressive delirium admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a 3A hospital in Xinjiang were collected and included in the verification group for comparative analysis and clinical validation of the prediction model. The total length of stay in the ICU, hemoglobin levels, albumin levels, activated partial thrombin time, and total bilirubin level were the five independent risk factors in constructing a prediction model. The area under the ROC curve of the predictive model (0.904) and the HL test result (χ2 = 8.518) indicate a good fit. This model is valuable for clinical diagnosis and treatment and auxiliary clinical decision-making.

ABSTRACT

Microelectrode arrays are commonly used to study the electrophysiological behavior of cells. Recently, there has been a growing interest in fabricating three-dimensional microelectrode arrays. Here, we present a novel process for the fast fabrication of epoxy-based 3D microelectrode array platforms with the assistance of laser-patterning technology. To this end, we photopatterned 3D pillars as scaffolds using epoxy-based dry films. Electrodes and conductor traces were fabricated by laser patterning of sputtered platinum films on top of the 3D structures, followed by deposition of parylene-C for insulation. Microelectrodes at the tip of the 3D structures were exposed using a vertical laser ablation process. The final electrodes demonstrated a low impedance of ∼10 kΩ at 1 kHz in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements under physiological conditions. We investigated the maximum compression force of the 3D structures, which could withstand approximately 0.6 N per pillar. The 3D microelectrode arrays were used to record extracellular signals from HL-1 cells in culture as a proof of principle. Our results show regular firing of action potentials recorded at the tip of the 3D structures, demonstrating the possibility of recording cell signals in non-planar environments.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound imaging has been widely used in clinical examination because of portability, safety, and low cost. However, there are still some main challenges of imaging quality that remain in conventional ultrasound systems. OBJECTIVE: Improving image quality of SA-based methods using an improved imaging mode named far-focus compound (FSC) imaging. METHODS: A far-focus compound (FSC) imaging based on full-aperture transmission and full-aperture reception is proposed in this paper. In transmission, it uses the full aperture to transmit the focused beam to ensure image resolution and emission of sound field energy. In reception, the full aperture is used to receive the reflected beam to ensure the image quality. A lag-one coherence-based zero-cross factor (LOCZF) is then implemented in FSC for improvement of contrast ratio (CR). The LOCZF uses lag-one coherence as zero-cross factorâs adaptive coefficient. Comparisons were made with several other weighting techniques by performing simulations and experiments for performance evaluation. RESULTS: Results confirm that LOCZF applied to FSC offers a good image contrast and simultaneously the speckle pattern. For simulated cysts, CR improvement of LOCZF reaches 194.1%. For experimental cysts, CR improvement of LOCZF reaches 220%. From the in-vivo result, compared with FSC, CR improvement of LOCZF reaches 112.7%. CONCLUSION: Proved gCNR performance. In addition, the LOCZF method shows good performance in experiments. The proposed method can be used as an effective weighting technique for improvement of image quality in ultrasound imaging.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To construct a bundled therapy management and practice program for sepsis and explore its clinical application effect. METHODS: (1) Construction of sepsis bundled therapy management and practice program: a project team was established to conduct literature review, select experts, compile and distribute questionnaires, organize, analyze expert opinions, and ensure quality control throughout the research process. From October to November 2022, expert letter consultation was carried out, and questionnaires were distributed and collected by on-site filling and WeChat. The Likert 5-point scale was used to rate each item. (2) Clinical application of the protocol: ninety patients with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January to July 2022 were retrospectively selected as the control group, and routine bundle treatment and nursing strategy for sepsis were adopted. Ninety patients with sepsis admitted from January to July 2023 were prospectively selected as the intervention group. Based on the treatment and nursing strategy of the control group, sepsis bundled therapy management and practice program constructed using the Delphi inquiry method was implemented. The completion rate of 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour bundle, the levels of inflammatory indicators at 1, 3, 7 days of treatment, and prognostic indicators were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: (1) Construction of sepsis bundled therapy management and practice program: the final plan consists of 4 primary indicators, 15 secondary indicators and 34 tertiary indicators. The response rates for both rounds of inquiry questionnaires were 100%. The coefficients of expert authority value were 0.948 and 0.940, respectively. The coefficient of variation for each item was 0-0.287 and 0-0.187, respectively. Kendall's W coefficients were 0.242 and 0.249, respectively, with statistical significances (all P < 0.05). (2) Clinical application of the protocol: there were no statistically significant differences in baseline data such as age, gender, infection site, pathogen species, duration of mechanical ventilation, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) between the two groups. The completion rate of 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour bundle in the intervention group were higher than those in the control group (1-hour bundle completion rate: 53.30% vs. 21.10%, 3-hour bundle completion rate: 92.20% vs. 80.00%, 6-hour bundle completion rate: 88.89% vs. 65.56%, all P < 0.05). The levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count (WBC), procalcitonin (PCT), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in two groups of patients showed statistically significant differences at different time points, between groups, and in interaction effects. Compared with the control group, the length of ICU stay in the intervention group was significantly shortened [days: 7.00 (4.00, 14.00) vs. 8.00 (7.00, 20.00), P < 0.01], and the hospitalization cost of ICU was significantly reduced [ten thousand yuan: 4.63 (3.36, 6.19) vs. 6.46 (3.32, 11.34), P < 0.05]. The 28-day mortality in the intervention group was lower than that in the control group (33.33% vs. 46.67%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The constructed bundled therapy management and practice program for sepsis can improve the completion rate of bundle treatment, shorten the length of ICU stay of sepsis patients, reduce the hospitalization cost in ICU, and have a tendency to reduce the 28-day mortality.

Motivated by the recent report on penta-MgN8 sheet [Mater. Today Phys. 2023, 38, 101259] that is the first realization of type-5 pentagonal 2D tessellation with exposed regularly distributed Mg ions, we carried out density functional theory studies on the interactions of H2 molecules with 1D penta-nanotube, 2D penta-sheet, and 3D porous structures based on penta-MgN8. We found that when the penta-MgN8 sheet is assembled to a 3D porous structure or curved to a nanotube, the bandgap increases from 1.18 to 1.35 and 1.88 eV, and the resulting derivatives are stable dynamically. When H2 molecules are introduced, the nanotube behaves best in adsorption, where each Mg ion can adsorb three H2 molecules: two on the outer surface and one on the inner surface. The curved geometry of the nanotube makes the Mg ion on the outer surface more exposed as compared with the situations of the 2D sheet and 3D porous structure, resulting in stronger adsorptions to H2. The gravimetric capacity (volumetric capacity) is 4.25 wt % (63 g/L) and 4.25 wt % (65 g/L) for the studied penta-sheet and penta-nanotube, and the corresponding desorption temperature is 115 and 162 K at 1 atm pressure, respectively, while for the 3D porous structure, the adsorption performance is poor due to the limited space and the less curvature, leading to strong steric hindrance and less exposed configuration for Mg ions. Moreover, the effects of temperature and pressure on adsorption are also discussed.

BACKGROUND: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite produced by intestinal microbiota through metabolizing phosphatidylcholine, choline, l-carnitine and betaine in the diet, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (AS). Concurrently, dietary polyphenols have garnered attention for their potential to ameliorate obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis primarily by modulating the intestinal microbial structure. Hickory (Carya cathayensis) nut, a polyphenol-rich food product favored for its palatability, emerges as a candidate for exploration. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The relationship between polyphenol of hickory nut and atherosclerosis prevention will be firstly clarified, providing theoretical basis for the discovery of natural products counteracting TMAO-induced AS process in hickory nut. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Employing Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and histological examination of aortic samples, the effects of total polyphenol extract on obesity index, inflammatory index and pathological changes of atherosclerosis in C57BL/6 J mice fed with high-fat and high choline diet were evaluated. Further, the composition, abundance, and function of mouse gut microbiota were analyzed through 16srDNA sequencing. Concurrently, the levels of TMAO and the expression of key enzymes (CutC and FMO3) involved in its synthesis are quantified using ELISA, Western Blot and Real-Time Quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Additionally, targeted metabolomic profiling of the hickory nut polyphenol extract was conducted, accompanied by molecular docking simulations to predict interactions between candidate polyphenols and the CutC/FMO3 using Autodock Vina. Finally, the docking prediction were verified by microscale thermophoresis (MST) . RESULTS: Polyphenol extracts of hickory nut improved the index of obesity and inflammation, and alleviated the pathological changes of atherosclerosis in C57BL/6 J mice fed with high-fat and high-choline diet. Meanwhile, these polyphenol extracts also changed the composition and function of intestinal microbiota, and increased the abundance of microorganisms in mice. Notably, the abundance of intestinal microbiota endowed with CutC gene was significantly reduced, coherent with expression of CutC catalyzing TMA production. Moreover, polyphenol extracts also decreased the expression of FMO3 in the liver, contributing to the reduction of TMAO levels in serum. Furthermore, metabonomic profile analysis of these polyphenol extracts identified 647 kinds of polyphenols. Molecular docking predication further demonstrated that Casuariin and Cinnamtannin B2 had the most potential inhibition on the enzymatic activities of CutC or FMO3, respectively. Notably, MST analysis corroborated the potential for direct interaction between CutC enzyme and available polyphenols such as Corilagin, (-)-Gallocatechin gallate and Epigallocatechin gallate. CONCLUSION: Hickory polyphenol extract can mitigate HFD-induced AS by regulating intestinal microflora in murine models. In addition, TMA-FMO3-TMAO pathway may play a key role in this process. This research unveils, for the inaugural time, the complex interaction between hickory nut-derived polyphenols and gut microbial, providing novel insights into the role of dietary polyphenols in AS prevention.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a hybrid multi-channel network to detect multileaf collimator (MLC) positional errors using dose difference (DD) maps and gamma maps generated from low-resolution detectors in patient-specific quality assurance (QA) for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). METHODS: A total of 68 plans with 358 beams of IMRT were included in this study. The MLC leaf positions of all control points in the original IMRT plans were modified to simulate four types of errors: shift error, opening error, closing error, and random error. These modified plans were imported into the treatment planning system (TPS) to calculate the predicted dose, while the PTW seven29 phantom was utilized to obtain the measured dose distributions. Based on the measured and predicted dose, DD maps and gamma maps, both with and without errors, were generated, resulting in a dataset with 3222 samples. The network's performance was evaluated using various metrics, including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, F1-score, ROC curves, and normalized confusion matrix. Besides, other baseline methods, such as single-channel hybrid network, ResNet-18, and Swin-Transformer, were also evaluated as a comparison. RESULTS: The experimental results showed that the multi-channel hybrid network outperformed other methods, demonstrating higher average precision, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-scores, with values of 0.87, 0.89, 0.85, 0.97, and 0.85, respectively. The multi-channel hybrid network also achieved higher AUC values in the random errors (0.964) and the error-free (0.946) categories. Although the average accuracy of the multi-channel hybrid network was only marginally better than that of ResNet-18 and Swin Transformer, it significantly outperformed them regarding precision in the error-free category. CONCLUSION: The proposed multi-channel hybrid network exhibits a high level of accuracy in identifying MLC errors using low-resolution detectors. The method offers an effective and reliable solution for promoting quality and safety of IMRT QA.

ABSTRACT

Even after successful extinction, conditioned fear can return. Strengthening the consolidation of the fear-inhibitory safety memory formed during extinction is one way to counteract return of fear. In a previous study, we found that post-extinction L-DOPA administration improved extinction memory retrieval 24 h later. Furthermore, spontaneous post-extinction reactivations of a neural activation pattern evoked in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) during extinction predicted extinction memory retrieval, L-DOPA increased the number of these reactivations, and this mediated the effect of L-DOPA on extinction memory retrieval. Here, we conducted a preregistered replication study of this work in healthy male participants. We confirm that spontaneous post-extinction vmPFC reactivations predict extinction memory retrieval. This predictive effect, however, was only observed 90 min after extinction, and was not statistically significant at 45 min as in the discovery study. In contrast to our previous study, we find no evidence that L-DOPA administration significantly enhances retrieval and that this is mediated by enhancement of the number of vmPFC reactivations. However, additional non-preregistered analyses reveal a beneficial effect of L-DOPA on extinction retrieval when controlling for the trait-like stable baseline levels of salivary alpha-amylase enzymatic activity. Further, trait salivary alpha-amylase negatively predicts retrieval, and this effect is reduced by L-DOPA treatment. Importantly, the latter findings result from non-preregistered analyses and thus further investigation is needed.

ABSTRACT

Motivated by the recent experimental synthesis of a LaCl3-based lithium superionic conductor [Yin, Y.-C. Nature 2023, 616, 77-83], we explore the potential of a LaCl3-based system for a sodium superionic conductor in this work. Using density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics simulation and a grand potential phase diagram analysis, we find that the resulting Na3La5Cl18 exhibits high energetic stability with a small energy-above-hull of 18 meV per atom, a large band gap of 5.58 eV, a wide electrochemical window of 0.41-3.76 V from the cathodic to the anodic limit, and a high Na+ conductivity of 1.3 mS/cm at 300 K. Furthermore, Na3La5Cl18 shows high chemical interface stability with the reported high-potential cathode materials such as NaCoO2, NaCrO2, Na2FePO4F, Na3V2(PO4)3, and Na3V2(PO4)2F3. These findings clearly suggest that the LaCl3-based framework can be used as a building block not only for Li-ion but also for Na-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT

Massive increases in the risks of depressive disorders and the ensuing suicide have become the overarching menace for children/adolescents. Despite global consensus to instigate psychological healthcare policy for these children/adolescents, their effects remain largely unclear neither from a small amount of official data nor from small-scale scientific studies. More importantly, in underprivileged children/adolescents in lower-middle-economic-status countries/areas, the data collection may not be as equally accessible as in developed countries/areas, thus resulting in underrepresented observations. To address these challenges, we released a large-scale and multi-center cohort dataset (n = 249,772) showing the effects of primary psychological healthcare on decreasing depression and suicidal ideation in these children/adolescents who were underrepresented in previous studies or current healthcare systems, including unattended children/adolescents, orphans, children/adolescents in especially difficult circumstances, and "left-behind" and "single-parenting" children/adolescents. We provided all individual data recording the depressive symptoms and suicide ideation that had been collected at baseline (Oct 2022) and half-year follow-up (May 2023) from practicing this psychological healthcare system.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma (JPOF) is a type of noncancerous bone tumor that usually affects adolescents in the craniomaxillofacial area. Clinical manifestations are usually symptoms caused by the tumor's invasive compression of surrounding tissues. Aneurysmal Bone Cyst (ABC) is also a benign bone tumor, and it typically occurs in long bones and the spine. Only 2% to 3% of cases occur in the head and neck. Due to the rarity of this combination of clinical cases, clinicians face difficulties in comprehensively understanding this complex lesion. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the clinical manifestations and characteristic imaging findings is necessary for surgeons. CASE PRESENTATIONS: On April 6, 2019, a 13-year-old boy presented with left maxillofacial bulge and pain for 1 month. Magnetic resonance imaging of the paranasal sinuses showed an irregular hive-like mass signal in the left maxillary sinus, and cystic changes with fluid levels were seen in the lesion. After the initial diagnosis of JPOF with primary ABC, we decided to perform a facial mid-facial resection of maxillary sinus tumor to remove the tumor tissue. Finally, after 3 recurrences and 4 operations, there was no tumor recurrence for 20 months after the last operation, and the patient was still under continuous follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This case provided a reference for the diagnosis and treatment of JPOF combined with ABC. In particular, a new understanding of the association between the two diseases and the management of recurrence were proposed, which had the potential to improve clinical understanding of this complicated condition.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The deep location of infratemporal fossa (ITF) combined with the abundant vascular plexus in it increased the difficulty of removing the mass in ITF through endoscope surgery approach. However, under appropriate circumstances, the excision of ITF tumors through a combined prelacrimal recess, Caldwell-Luc, and distal intraoral approach can be safely performed with minimal impact on the surrounding tissues. CASE PRESENTATION: The Department of Neurology received a 69-year-old male patient who had been experiencing headache, dizziness, and numbness from the mastoid region of his left ear to the corner of his mouth for a duration of 22 days. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a tumor located in the ITF. Following transfer to our department, surgical intervention was performed using a combined approach involving the prelacrimal recess, the anterior wall of maxillary sinus, and lateral ITF to successfully remove the tumor. Postoperative pathologic examination confirmed schwannoma as its nature. The patient was discharged in excellent condition without any functional impairment. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of this case, the authors believe that this combined approach can offer a distinct endoscopic perspective and adequate surgical workspace, which is crucial for tumor removal while preserving the integrity of surrounding normal tissues. Moreover, the utilization of multiple small incisions has minimal impact on postoperative recovery.

ABSTRACT

In this study, to improve the compaction quality and parameters of slag, discrete element models of irregular rock particles (10-60 mm) and circular soil particles (5 mm) were established based on on-site slag screening results. The motion of the vibratory roller was captured by coupling the roadbed model with the roller model in a simulation in which the roller vibrated and compacted the slag subgrade. The results indicated that (1) the best compaction was achieved when the small particle content was 40%, the medium particle content was 20%, and the large particle content was 40%. (2) When the slag was dominated by small rock particles, the optimum compaction frequency was 28 Hz, and when large rock particles dominated, the optimum compaction frequency was 33 Hz. (3) Rock particles were the primary particles that experienced stress in the vibration compaction, and the compressive force and displacement depended on the particle size. (4) The longitudinal and vertical displacements and rotation angles of the soil and rock particles were examined. The results of this study are conducive for advancing the understanding of slag compaction and improving the working efficiency and compaction quality of rollers.
