ABSTRACT

Abstract Kawasaki disease (KD) is an inflammatory condition that may affect genetically predisposed individuals in pediatric ages after infectious/environmental triggering. An infrequent finding associated with KD is ascending aortic aneurysm during or after the acute phase of the disease. In this Multimedia presentation, we describe a three-year-old girl submitted to surgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Parasites are important organisms in ecosystem dynamics and take part in the regulation and structure of host populations. The prevalence, abundance, and distribution of parasites in their host species may be affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Most studies of helminths of Brazilian marsupials are taxonomic descriptions or re-descriptions and records of occurrence. The use of noninvasive techniques for studying parasitic worms of vertebrate hosts is more common in large or threatened species. The aims of this study were to describe and identify the helminth morphotypes and to analyse the parasitological parameters of gastrointestinal helminth eggs obtained in faecal samples of marsupial Didelphis aurita at the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station and surroundings, municipality of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. The common opossums were sampled during a capture-mark-recapture study. Faecal samples collected from each animal were analysed for helminth egg diagnosis using the methods of flotation in sugar solution and sedimentation. Eggs were compared with samples obtained from the uterus of adult worms obtained from a previous study carried out in the same area. Eleven helminth egg morphotypes were found. Among them, seven were identified at the species level. The highest values of parasitic load and prevalence were observed for the families Viannaiidae and Trichuridae. A significant relationship was found between the number of morphotypes and host body size in females. The influence of parasite load on host condition factor or body size was not observed.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To validate the questionnaire CVT-GOHISALO - short version for use in Ecuadorian workers. Design: Exploratory factor analysis of the questionnaire CVT-GOHISALO with a population of Ecuadorian workers. Methods: The population was composed of 400 subjects who work in various labor shifts in the formal economy in Ecuador. The statistical analysis was based on the determination of the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, proportion of variance explained and eigen values of each item of the scale. Results: The Cronbach's α coefficient of the questionnaire in general was of 0.911. Individually, most of the 7 factors of the questionnaire obtained satisfactory values; the ones that present a Cronbach's alpha coefficient below 0.7 were, "Integration to the job", which qualifies as appropriate with deficits (α =0.6) and "Job reliability", which qualifies as inadequate (α =0.5). Conclusions: It is possible to use the questionnaire CVT-GOHISALO - short version for the purposes of research and evaluation in firms in Ecuador.

ABSTRACT

A helmintofauna de A. montensis incluiu as espécies G. zetta, Trichofreitasia lenti (Nematoda, Heligmonellidae), Trichuris navonae (Nematoda, Trichuridae), Angiostrongylus sp. (Nematoda, Angiostrongylidae), Litomosoides chagasfilhoi (Nematoda, Onchocercidae) e Rodentolepis akodontis (Plathyhelmintes, Cestoda). ABSTRACT

We are currently using a 2-DE-based proteomics approach to study plant responses to pathogenic fungi by using the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L)-Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi pathosystem. It is clear that the protocols for the first stages of a standard proteomics workflow must be optimized to each biological system and objectives of the research. The optimization procedure for the extraction and separation of proteins by 1-DE and 2-DE in the indicated system is reported. This strategy can be extrapolated to other plant-pathogen interaction systems in order to perform an evaluation of the changes in the host protein profile caused by the pathogen and to identify proteins which, at early stages, are involved or implicated in the plant defense response.
