ABSTRACT

Three-dimensional point cloud evaluation is used in photogrammetry to validate and assess the accuracy of data acquisition in order to generate various three-dimensional products. This paper determines the optimal accuracy and correctness of a 3D point cloud produced by a low-cost spherical camera in comparison to the 3D point cloud produced by laser scanner. The fisheye images were captured from a chessboard using a spherical camera, which was calibrated using the commercial Agisoft Metashape software (version 2.1). For this purpose, the results of different calibration methods are compared. In order to achieve data acquisition, multiple images were captured from the inside area of our case study structure (an underpass in Wiesbaden, Germany) in different configurations with the aim of optimal network design for camera location and orientation. The relative orientation was generated from multiple images obtained by removing the point cloud noise. For assessment purposes, the same scene was captured with a laser scanner to generate a metric comparison between the correspondence point cloud and the spherical one. The geometric features of both point clouds were analyzed for a complete geometric quality assessment. In conclusion, this study highlights the promising capabilities of low-cost spherical cameras for capturing and generating high-quality 3D point clouds by conducting a thorough analysis of the geometric features and accuracy assessments of the absolute and relative orientations of the generated clouds. This research demonstrated the applicability of spherical camera-based photogrammetry to challenging structures, such as underpasses with limited space for data acquisition, and achieved a 0.34 RMS re-projection error in the relative orientation step and a ground control point accuracy of nearly 1 mm. Compared to the laser scanner point cloud, the spherical point cloud reached an average distance of 0.05 m and acceptable geometric consistency.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report and evaluate a multicenter series of 18 cases of severe, spontaneous IOL tilt involving the flanged intrascleral haptic fixation technique (FISHF). DESIGN: Clinical study with historical controls. METHODS: We report a cross-sectional study of 46 FISHF cases using the CT Lucia 602 IOL at a single academic center over a period of 24 weeks to determine the incidence of severe rotisserie-style rotational tilt. These rates were then compared with the same time-frame the prior year to help determine if this is a new phenomenon. Additional cases of severe tilt were solicited from another 4 academic centers. RESULTS: Among 46 FISHF cases at a single center, 5 developed severe tilt. No clear pattern in surgical technique, ocular history, or ocular anatomy was evident in these cases compared with controls, although the involved IOLs clustered within a narrow diopter range, indicative of a batch effect. In the same 24-week interval the year before, 33 FISHF cases were performed, none of which exhibited severe rotational tilt. In our multicenter dataset, 18 cases of tilt were identified. Surgeons included fellow and early-career physicians as well as surgeons with multiple years of experience with the Yamane technique. A variety of surgical approaches for FISHF were represented. In at least 8 of the cases, haptic rotation and/or dehiscence at the optic-haptic junction were documented. CONCLUSIONS: The identification of haptic rotation and dehiscence intraoperatively in several cases may reflect a new stability issue involving the optic-haptic junction.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Empathy is a critical competency for health care providers. However, empathy levels in medical students and residents have been shown to paradoxically decrease during training. Arts and humanities education and reflective practice may reduce burnout and promote empathy during medical school. Methods: We developed and implemented an art education elective for medical students focusing on observation and reflective practice and measured its impact on empathy. Between 2017 and 2022, first-year medical students were offered an annual, 4-week elective led by art educators that featured visualization exercises and discussions on the role of bias and perspective in art interpretation. Curriculum effectiveness and impact on empathy were measured using the validated Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and self-assessments. Results: One hundred twenty-eight students participated in the elective over a 5-year period; 89 (70%) completed assessments. Students reported improvements in empathic communication, recognition of bias, and observation skills. IRI data demonstrated a significant increase in perspective taking (19.0 vs. 20.2; p < .0125). Discussion: Participation in the elective was associated with self-reported improvements in visual observation, awareness of bias, and empathetic communication. IRI results showed that participants also demonstrated improved perspective taking. Since perspective taking is a cognitive component of empathy, we have provided some empirical evidence that arts education in medical school can promote empathic attitudes and skills.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To report a case of bacterial keratitis caused by an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain linked to contaminated artificial tears in the United States. The ulcer was successfully treated without perforation or extracorneal spread. Observations: An 81-year-old patient presented with a corneal ulcer of the right eye. The patient had a notable complex ocular history including glaucoma and corneal edema from corneal decompensation after prolonged retained lens fragment. Despite starting hourly fortified tobramycin and vancomycin eye drops, the infiltrate grew significantly by the next day. Bacterial culture grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa that was resistant to all tested antibiotics except for intermediate susceptibility to colistin and susceptibility to cefiderocol. Tobramycin-soaked collagen shields were applied daily for three days, and the patient was started on fortified colistin eye drops. The ulcer improved and, after seven weeks of therapy, the infiltrate resolved and resulted in a large central corneal scar. Conclusions and Importance: A combination of fortified colistin and tobramycin (administered via a combination of fortified eye drops and tobramycin-soaked collagen shields) appears to be an effective treatment option for extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa corneal ulcers.

Background: Herbal medicines have been extensively used to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Garlic, known to exert antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects, can be coadministered with standard treatments to combat COVID-19. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of Gallecina oral capsules (Samisaz Pharmaceutical Company, Mashhad, Iran), a fortified garlic extract, as adjunctive therapy to improve the clinical status and symptoms in noncritically ill patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: This triple-blind randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted on noncritically ill patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the nonintensive care wards of Imam Hassan Hospital. Patients received remdesivir plus 90 mg Gallecina capsule or a placebo every 8 hours for 5 days or until discharge. The clinical status, respiratory symptoms, and laboratory parameters were recorded during the study period. Results: Patients were enrolled between April 24 and July 18, 2021. Data from 72 patients in the Gallecina group and 69 patients in the placebo group were analyzed. Oxygen saturation, C-reactive protein levels, and the distribution of respiratory distress and cough were similar between groups on the day of discharge. Although body temperature was significantly lower in the Gallecina group than that in the placebo group on the day of discharge (P = 0.04), it was within the normal range for both groups. The proportion of patients requiring supplemental oxygen for at least 1 day during the study was significantly reduced in the Gallecina group on days 3 and 4 and the day of discharge (P < 0.05). Gastrointestinal complaints were more prevalent in the Gallecina group than in the placebo group but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). Conclusions: There was no significant effect on the primary outcome of clinical status on study day 6. Although the proportion of Gallecina-treated patients who needed supplemental oxygen significantly decreased on days 3 and 4 and the day of discharge, there was no significant difference between the groups on other days. The possible beneficial effects on oxygen requirements in noncritically ill COVID-19 patients may warrant further investigation. (Curr Ther Res Clin Exp. 2023; 84:XXX-XXX). Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effect of preparation design on fracture resistance (FR) of endodontically treated maxillary premolars restored with lithium disilicate (LDS) endocrowns fabricated by the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro, experimental study, 30 sound maxillary premolars were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 10) of control (no preparation), endocrown preparation with butt-joint design without ferrule, and endocrown preparation with ferrule (shoulder design with 1 mm height). After restoration fabrication and cementation, the teeth underwent thermocycling, were mounted with 45° angle, and subjected to compressive load in a universal testing machine to measure their FR. The mode of failure was also determined under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α =0.05). Results: The shoulder group showed the highest FR (1768.98 ± 386.1 N). The difference in FR was statistically significant among the three groups (P < 0.05). Pairwise comparisons revealed that the shoulder group had significantly higher FR than the butt-joint (P = 0.001) and control (P = 0.009) groups. However, the difference in FR between the butt-joint and control groups was not significant (P = 0.75). The mode of failure was not significantly different among the three groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Preparation design had a significant effect on FR of endodontically treated maxillary premolars restored with LDS CAD/CAM Endocrowns, such that addition of a short axial wall in shoulder group significantly increased the FR of endocrowns.

ABSTRACT

Interleukin (IL)-34 is ligand for the colony-stimulating factor (CSF)-1 receptor. This cytokine has fundamental roles the pathogenesis of a number of autoimmune and neurologic disorders. However, its role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies (AIDP and CIDP) has not been assessed yet. We measured serum levels of IL-34 33 CIDP cases, 16 AIDP cases, and 33 control subjects using commercial ELISA kits. IL-34 levels were significantly higher in both AIDP (44.87 ± 4.38) and CIDP (44.87 ± 4.38) groups compared with healthy subjects (30.10 ± 1.05) (P = 0.046 and P = 0.01, respectively). Differences between female subgroups were insignificant. However, levels of this cytokine were significantly higher in male subjects with CIDP compared with male controls (P = 0.042). Thus, levels of this cytokine might be regarded as biomarkers for these kinds of autoimmune disorders. Future studies are needed to verify these results and find the molecular mechanism of participation of IL-34 in the pathogenesis of AIDP/CIDP.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the UiO-66-NH2 MOF synthesized by microwave heating method was incorporated into the PAN/chitosan nanofibers for the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI) ions through the adsorption and membrane filtration processes. The synthesized MOFs and nanofibers were characterized using XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM, and DSC analysis. The effect of UiO-66-NH2 MOF content (0-15 wt.%), pH (2-7), contact time(5-90 min), metal ions initial concentration (20-1000 mg/L) and temperature (25-45 °C) was studied on the metal ions adsorption using PAN/chitosan/UiO-66-NH2 nanofibrous adsorbent. The kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic parameters were evaluated to understand the metal ions adsorption mechanism using nanofibers. The Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Redlich-Peterson isotherm model were well described the experimental sorption data. In the heavy metal ions membrane filtration process, the different parameters such as MOF concentration (2-15 wt.%), membrane thickness (10-70 µm), metal ions concentration (5-50 mg/L), temperature (25-45 °C) and filtration time (1-24 h) were investigated on the performance of PVDF/ PAN/chitosan/UiO-66-NH2 nanofibrous membrane toward metal ions removal. The high water flux and high metal ions removal within 18 h filtration time showed the high potential of PVDF/ PAN/chitosan/UiO-66-NH2 membrane for the removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions.

ABSTRACT

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) are characterized by an abnormal aggregation of misfolded beta-sheet rich proteins such as ß-amyloid (Aß). Various ubiquitously expressed molecular chaperones control the correct folding of cellular proteins and prevent the accumulation of harmful species. We here describe a novel anti-aggregant chaperone function for the neuroendocrine protein proSAAS, an abundant secretory polypeptide that is widely expressed within neural and endocrine tissues and which has previously been associated with neurodegenerative disease in various proteomics studies. In the brains of 12-month-old APdE9 mice, and in the cortex of a human AD-affected brain, proSAAS immunoreactivity was highly colocalized with amyloid pathology. Immunoreactive proSAAS co-immunoprecipitated with Aß immunoreactivity in lysates from APdE9 mouse brains. In vitro, proSAAS efficiently prevented the fibrillation of Aß(1-42) at molar ratios of 1 : 10, and this anti-aggregation effect was dose dependent. Structure-function studies showed that residues 97-180 were sufficient for the anti-aggregation function against Aß. Finally, inclusion of recombinant proSAAS in the medium of Neuro2a cells, as well as lentiviral-mediated proSAAS over-expression, blocked the neurocytotoxic effect of Aß(1-42) in Neuro2a cells. Taken together, our results suggest that proSAAS may play a role in Alzheimer's disease pathology.
