ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is critical to control its spread, vaccine hesitancy varies significantly among the United States population; moreover, some vaccine recipients experienced various adverse effects. We aim to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a university-affiliated community, the factors affecting participants' decisions, and their adverse effects. Methods: A pre-vaccination online Institutional Review Board IRB-approved survey was emailed in Nov/Dec 2020, 2 months before the implementation of state-policy protocols for COVID-19 vaccination. A post-vaccination survey was emailed in May/June 2021, two months after protocol execution. A third follow-up survey was sent in Nov/Dec 2021, and a fourth was sent in June/July 2022. The study population included three groups of adult participants: university students, faculty, and staff-(MS), university health system patients-(MP), and Cancer Center patients-(MCP). The study was designed as a longitudinal cohort study. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS. Results: With a combined response rate of 26% (40,578/157,292) among the four surveys, 15,361 participants completed the first survey (MS = 4,983, MP = 9,551, and MCP = 827). 2/3 of participants (63.5%) were willing to get vaccinated, with a significant difference in acceptance among groups, MS:56.6%, MP:66.2%, and MCP:71.6% (p < 0.05). Vaccine acceptance rates reached 89% in the second survey after the vaccine's approval, with a lower acceptance rate of MS:84.6% than with MP:90.74% and MCP:92.47% participants (p < 0.05). Safety and effectiveness concerns were the main factors affecting participants' decisions in all the first three surveys; however, participants reported these concerns decreased between pre-vaccination, post-vaccination, and follow-up surveys with 87%, 56%, and 46%, respectively(p < 0.05). More than two-thirds of the participants (70%) reported having either minor/moderate symptoms (61.6%) or major symptoms (8.6%) after getting some of the vaccine doses (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The hesitance of COVID-19 vaccination was associated with concerns regarding its safety and efficacy. Vaccine acceptance rose higher than expected after protocol execution, likely due to continuous education, whereas safety and efficacy remain factors hindering vaccine acceptance. Continuous education focusing on safety and efficacy of the vaccine can reduce vaccine hesitancy and raise the rates of vaccination.

Introduction: An obesogenic diet, a diet high in saturated fats and sugars, is a risk factor for the development of multiple obesity-related diseases. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with a mixture of Mexican functional foods (MexMix), Opuntia ficus indica (nopal), Theobroma cacao, and Acheta domesticus (edible crickets), compared with a high-fat and fructose/sucrose diet on an obesogenic mice model. Methods: For this study, 18 male C57BL/6J mice were used, which were divided into three groups: (1) control group: normal diet (ND), (2) HF/FS group: high-fat diet along with 4.2% fructose/sucrose and water (ad libitum access), and (3) therapeutic group (MexMix): HF/FS diet up to week 8, followed by HF/FS diet supplemented with 10% nopal, 10% cocoa, and 10% cricket for 8 weeks. Results: MexMix mice showed significantly reduced body weight, liver weight, visceral fat, and epididymal fat compared with HF/FS mice. Levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, insulin, glucose, GIP, leptin, PAI-1, and resistin were also significantly reduced. For identifying the gut microbiota in the model, 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis was performed, and the results showed that MexMix supplementation increased the abundance of Lachnospira, Eubacterium coprostanoligenes, and Blautia, bacteria involved in multiple beneficial metabolic effects. It is noteworthy that the mice supplemented with MexMix showed improvements in cognitive parameters, as evaluated by the novel object recognition test. Conclusion: Hence, supplementation with MexMix food might represent a potential strategy for the treatment of obesity and other diseases associated with excessive intake of fats and sugars.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to summarize the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 from Western Mexico people during 2020. A retrospective analysis from an electronic database of people visiting a sentinel center for molecular SARS-CoV-2 confirmatory diagnosis by RT-PCR from April to December 2020 was carried out for epidemiological and clinical description of COVID-19. Out of 23,211 patients evaluated, 6918 (29.8%) were confirmed for SARS-CoV-2 infection (mean age 38.5 ± 13.99), mostly females (53.8%). Comorbidities, such as diabetes (34.7%), obesity (31.15%), and hypertension (31.8%), presented an increased odds OR = 1.27, CI = 1.14-1.41; OR = 1.08, CI = 1.01-1.16; and OR = 1.09, CI = 0.99-1.19, respectively, for viral-infection. Moreover, fever, headache, and dry cough were the most frequent symptoms. No infection difference among sex was found. Those patients >60 years old were prone to COVID-19 severity (OR = 3.59, CI = 2.10-6.14), evaluated by the number of manifested symptoms, increasing with age. In conclusion, a high SARS-CoV-2 prevalence was found in Western Mexico. Comorbidities were frequent in infected people; nevertheless, no association with disease outcomes was observed, in contrast with the highest disease severity risk found in older patients; however, continuous monitoring should be carried since comorbidities have been reported as aggravating factors. This study can help the health officials for the elaboration of planning efforts of the disease management and others in the future.

ABSTRACT

miRNAs are involved in the development of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We aimed to evaluate modifications by prolonged-release pirfenidone (PR-PFD) on key hepatic miRNAs expression in a MAFLD/NASH model. First, male C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned into groups and fed with conventional diet (CVD) or high fat and carbohydrate diet (HFD) for 16 weeks. At the end of the eighth week, HFD mice were divided in two and only one half was treated with 300 mg/kg/day of PR-PFD mixed with food. Hepatic expression of miRNAs and target genes that participate in inflammation and lipid metabolism was determined by qRT-PCR and transcriptome by microarrays. Increased hepatic expression of miR-21a-5p, miR-34a-5p, miR-122-5p and miR-103-3p in MAFLD/NASH animals was reduced with PR-PFD. Transcriptome analysis showed that 52 genes involved in lipid and collagen biosynthesis and inflammatory response were downregulated in PR-PFD group. The expression of Il1b, Tnfa, Il6, Tgfb1, Col1a1, and Srebf1 were decreased in PR-PFD treated animals. MAFLD/NASH animals compared to CVD group showed modifications in gene metabolic pathways implicated in lipid metabolic process, inflammatory response and insulin resistance; PR-PFD reversed these modifications.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is characterized by hepatic steatosis accompanied by one of three features: overweight or obesity, T2DM, or lean or normal weight with evidence of metabolic dysregulation. It is distinguished by excessive fat accumulation in hepatocytes, and a decrease in the liver's ability to oxidize fats, the accumulation of ectopic fat, and the activation of proinflammatory pathways. Chronic damage will keep this pathophysiologic cycle active causing progression from hepatic steatosis to cirrhosis and eventually, hepatocarcinoma. Epigenetics affecting gene expression without altering DNA sequence allows us to study MAFLD pathophysiology from a different perspective, in which DNA methylation processes, histone modifications, and miRNAs expression have been closely associated with MAFLD progression. However, these considerations also faced us with the circumstance that modifying those epigenetics patterns might lead to MAFLD regression. Currently, epigenetics is an area of great interest because it could provide new insights in therapeutic targets and non-invasive biomarkers. This review comprises an update on the role of epigenetic patterns, as well as innovative therapeutic targets and biomarkers in MAFLD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Numerous inclusion and exclusion criteria are involved in phase III moderate to severe psoriasis trials investigating the safety and efficacy of biologics. This questions the generalization of results. METHODS: In this cohort study, we applied inclusion/exclusion criteria for phase III trials from original protocols (adalimumab - REVEAL, ustekinumab - PHOENIX, brodalumab - AMAGINE, secukinumab FIXTURE) to all patients enrolled in the PsoBioTeq prospective registry who received a biological agent for the first time between July 2012 and November 2017. We then compared the efficacy, drug survival and occurrence of adverse events between patients who satisfied/did not satisfy the eligibility criteria for these phase III trials. RESULTS: A total of 1267 patients were enrolled, of whom 993 (78.4%) were not eligible for at least one RCT (randomized controlled trial) and 251 (19.1%) did not meet the PASI/PGA severity requirements. Apart from disease severity, the most frequent criteria resulting in exclusion were as follows: non-plaque psoriasis (12.6%), significant cardiac disease (8.4%), significant liver disease (7.3%), elevated liver enzymes (4.9-9.6%) and personal history of diabetes (9.2%). There was no difference in drug survival between the two groups. The incidence ratio of adverse events was significantly lower in eligible versus non-eligible patients [0.78 (95% CI 0.62-0.97) (P = 0.03)]. CONCLUSION: The majority of patients treated with biologics in the PsoBioTeq real-life registry would not have been eligible for phase III moderate to severe psoriasis trials. Patients not eligible for psoriasis phase III clinical trials have a higher incidence of adverse events.

BACKGROUND: The severity and progression of rotator cuff tears have forced research on new treatment pathways such as metalloprotease inhibition, which has shown a reduction in healing time and improvement in the structure of collagen fibers. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of doxycycline as a healing enhancer in rotator cuff tears after surgical treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 20 patients were included; they were divided into two groups, 10 with the use of doxycycline and 10 without it after arthroscopic repair with one-year follow-up. Doxycycline was given orally, 100 mg once a day for one month. Every subject in the test was diagnosed with rotator cuff tear confirmed by MRI with Patte and Goutallier scores below 2. We used the arthroscopic double row technique. Post-op follow-up was 12 months with clinical scales (UCLA, Constant and forward flexion strength). RESULTS: Both groups reported almost complete healing of rotator cuff tears after surgical treatment during the twelve months of follow-up; forward flexion strength was the only score that reported improvement in the doxycycline group during every check-up. DISCUSSION: Doxycycline use after arthroscopic cuff tear repair could improve the clinical outcome, but we do not know how yet; however larger sample and randomized trials should be developed.


ANTECEDENTES: La severidad y progresión inevitable de la lesión del manguito rotador ha llevado a experimentar con adyuvantes terapéuticos para disminuir el tiempo de recuperación postquirúrgica, así como mejorar la estructura del tendón en recuperación al inhibir la matriz de metaloproteasas. OBJETIVO: Evaluar el uso de la doxiciclina como adyuvante en la cicatrización de lesiones hueso-tendón en la reparación quirúrgica del manguito rotador. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se reclutaron 20 pacientes con lesión del manguito rotador corroborada por imagen con retracción del supraespinoso grado II (Patte) e infiltración grasa de 50% (Goutallier). Fueron divididos en dos grupos: a 10 se les administró doxiciclina, 100 mg cada 24 horas durante un mes, y el resto fueron un grupo control sin doxiciclina. Ambos fueron tratados quirúrgicamente con técnica de doble hilera vía artroscópica, con seguimiento periódico hasta 12 meses mediante escalas de UCLA, Constant y potencia de flexión anterógrada. RESULTADOS: Se encontró recuperación clínica de la lesión en ambos grupos a los 12 meses, mayor potencia de flexión anterógrada en cada uno de los intervalos de medición para el grupo donde se administró la doxiciclina. Durante la evolución del estudio, se mantuvo constante Constant y UCLA; se encontró mejoría considerable con la potencia de flexión anteró grada como valor independiente. DISCUSIÓN: El uso de doxiciclina podría mejorar de una forma considerable el pronóstico clínico de la reparación artroscópica de mango rotador con el uso de doble hilera, pero aún no sabemos cómo, aunque deberán realizarse estudios adicionales con una muestra mayor.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: New drugs and new evidence concerning the use of established treatments have become available since the publication of the first European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) recommendations for the management of gout, in 2006. This situation has prompted a systematic review and update of the 2006 recommendations. METHODS: The EULAR task force consisted of 15 rheumatologists, 1 radiologist, 2 general practitioners, 1 research fellow, 2 patients and 3 experts in epidemiology/methodology from 12 European countries. A systematic review of the literature concerning all aspects of gout treatments was performed. Subsequently, recommendations were formulated by use of a Delphi consensus approach. RESULTS: Three overarching principles and 11 key recommendations were generated. For the treatment of flare, colchicine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), oral or intra-articular steroids or a combination are recommended. In patients with frequent flare and contraindications to colchicine, NSAIDs and corticosteroids, an interleukin-1 blocker should be considered. In addition to education and a non-pharmacological management approach, urate-lowering therapy (ULT) should be considered from the first presentation of the disease, and serum uric acid (SUA) levels should be maintained at<6 mg/dL (360 µmol/L) and <5 mg/dL (300 µmol/L) in those with severe gout. Allopurinol is recommended as first-line ULT and its dosage should be adjusted according to renal function. If the SUA target cannot be achieved with allopurinol, then febuxostat, a uricosuric or combining a xanthine oxidase inhibitor with a uricosuric should be considered. For patients with refractory gout, pegloticase is recommended. CONCLUSIONS: These recommendations aim to inform physicians and patients about the non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments for gout and to provide the best strategies to achieve the predefined urate target to cure the disease.

Purpose. The incidence of liver neoplasms is rising in USA. The purpose of this study was to determine metabolic profiles of liver tissue during early cancer development. Methods. We used the rabbit VX2 model of liver tumors (LT) and a control group consisting of sham animals implanted with Gelfoam into their livers (LG). After two weeks from implantation, liver tissue from lobes with and without tumor was obtained from experimental animals (LT+/LT-) as well as liver tissue from controls (LG+/LG-). Peaks obtained by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry were subjected to identification. 56 metabolites were identified and their profiles compared between groups using principal component analysis (PCA) and a mixed-effect two-way ANOVA model. Results. Animals recovered from surgery uneventfully. Analyses identified a metabolite profile that significantly differs in experimental conditions after controlling the False Discovery Rate (FDR). 16 metabolites concentrations differed significantly when comparing samples from (LT+/LT-) to samples from (LG+/LG-) livers. A significant difference was also shown in 20 metabolites when comparing samples from (LT+) liver lobes to samples from (LT-) liver lobes. Conclusion. Normal liver tissue harboring malignancy had a distinct metabolic signature. The role of metabolic profiles on liver biopsies for the detection of early liver cancer remains to be determined.

Purpose. The incidence of liver tumors is rising in USA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate liver oxido-reductive status in the presence of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods. Glutathione species and ophthalmate (OA) concentrations were measured by LC-MS in processed plasma and red blood cells (RBC) from infected Woodchuck with hepatitis virus (WHV). Blood samples were obtained from: (i) infected animals with tumors (WHV+/HCC+), (ii) infected animals without tumors (WHV+/HCC-) and (iii) healthy animals (WHC-/HCC-). Results. The concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) and the ratio GSH/GSG were lower in plasma from WHV+/HCC+ animals when compared to WHV+/HCC- and WHV-/HCC- (P < 0.01). In contrast, the concentration of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) was found to be higher in plasma from WHV+/HCC+ animals when compared to WHV+/HCC- and WHV-/HCC- (P < 0.01). The Glutathione species and its ratio from the RBC compartment were similar among all groups. OA concentration in both plasma and RBC was significantly higher from WHV+/HCC+ when compared to WHV+/HCC- and WHV-/HCC- (P < 0.01). Conclusions. Disturbances of the glutathione redox buffer system and higher concentrations of OA were found in the WCV+/HCC+ animal model. The role of these compounds as biomarkers of early tumor development in patients with end stage liver disease remains to be determined.

PURPOSE: Available tumor markers have low sensitivity/specificity for the diagnosis of liver tumors. The present study was designed to evaluate the oxidoreductive status of the liver as surrogates of tumor subsistence and growth. METHODS: Glutathione species (GSH:GSSG), ophthalmate (OA) concentrations, and their turnover were measured in plasma of rabbits (n = 6) in their healthy state and in the state of tumor growth after implantation of the VX2 carcinoma in their liver. Tumors were allowed to grow for a period of 14 days when rabbits were sacrificed. Livers were removed and cysteine concentration was measured in liver tissue. RESULTS: Tumor growth was found in 100% of the rabbits. Concentration and labeling of GSH/GSSG were similar in experimental animals before and after tumor implantation and to sham animals. In contrast, OA concentration increased significantly in experimental animals after tumor implantation when compared to same animals prior to tumor implantation and to sham animals (P < .05). The concentration of cysteine, a precursor of GSH, was found to be significantly lower in the liver tissue adjacent to the tumor (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Disturbances in the oxidoreductive state of livers appear to be a surrogate of early tumor growth.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as a treatment option for local tumor control of primary and secondary malignancies of the liver. We report on our updated experience with SBRT in patients with non-resectable tumors of the liver. METHODS: Our first 17 consecutive patients (mean age 58.1 years) receiving SBRT for HCC (n = 6), IHC (n = 3), and LM (n = 8) are presented. Mean radiation dose was 34 Gy delivered over 1-3 fractions. RESULTS: Treated patients had a mean decrease in maximum pretreatment tumor diameter from 6.9 +/- 4.6 cm to 5.0 +/- 2.1 cm at three months after treatment (P < .05). The mean total tumor volume reduction was 44% at six months (P < .05). 82% of all patients (14/17) achieved local control with a median follow-up of 8 months. 100% of patients with HCC (n = 6) achieved local control. Patients with surgically placed fiducial markers had no complications related to marker placement. CONCLUSION: Our preliminary results showed that SBRT is a safe and effective local treatment modality in selected patients with liver malignancies with minimal adverse events. Further studies are needed to define its role in the management of these malignancies.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Metastatic disease is the most common liver tumor. Although alternative therapies have been developed for non-surgical candidates, those therapies lacked ideal testing prior to clinical application because of a paucity of large animal models. The purpose of the present study was to develop a model for secondary liver tumor in a large animal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fibroblasts were isolated from swine ear lobules and then transfected with amphotrophic retroviruses encoding human or murine genetic material (hTERT, p53(DD), cyclinD-1, CDK4(R24C), Myc (T58A), Ras(G12V)). Transformed cell lines were finally inoculated subcutaneously (s.c.) into: 1) immunodeficient mice (nude), 2) immunocompetent mice (wild type), 3) immunosuppressed swine (under tacrolimus or corticosteroids), 4) immunocompetent swine, and 5) into the liver and portal circulation of swine under steroid-based immunosuppression. RESULTS: In the murine model, tumor growth was evident in 100% of the nude mice (n=5), with a peak size of 20 mm (15.22+/-4.5 mm; mean+/-SD) at the time of sacrifice (3 weeks). Tumor growth was evident in 71% of the wild mice (n=21), with a peak size of 7.8 mm (4.19+/-1.1 mm) by the third week of growth. In the swine model, tumor growth was evident in 75% (3/4 ears; n=2) of swine under tacrolimus-based immunosuppression versus 50% of swine under steroids-based immunosuppression (n=2). Tumor growth was slow in two animals, while in one animal the tumor was larger with a peak growth of 42 mm at 3 weeks. The tumor pattern in the ear lobules was characterized by slow growth, with a peak size of 6-8 mm in the immunocompetent swine at 3 weeks. All tumors were shown to be malignant by histology. In contrast, inoculums of the transformed fibroblast cell line in swine livers showed no evidence of tumor growth at 3 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Development of a transformed swine fibroblast cell line was successful, resulting in an in vivo malignant tumor. Cell line inoculums had tumorigenic properties in nude mice, wild-type mice, and immunosuppressed swine, as judged by uncontrolled cell growth, invasion of surrounding tissue, neoangiogenesis, and invasion of normal vasculature, resulting in the formation of tumor nodules. Such properties were not observed in swine upon inoculation into the liver/portal circulation.

ABSTRACT

Dual-energy mammographic imaging experimental tests have been performed using a compact dichromatic imaging system based on a conventional x-ray tube, a mosaic crystal, and a 384-strip silicon detector equipped with full-custom electronics with single photon counting capability. For simulating mammal tissue, a three-component phantom, made of Plexiglass, polyethylene, and water, has been used. Images have been collected with three different pairs of x-ray energies: 16-32 keV, 18-36 keV, and 20-40 keV. A Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment has also been carried out using the MCNP-4C transport code. The Alvarez-Macovski algorithm has been applied both to experimental and simulated data to remove the contrast between two of the phantom materials so as to enhance the visibility of the third one.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of topically applied prostaglandin E1 (PGE(1))+5% SEPA (soft enhancement of percutaneous absorption) on the glans penis in a feline erection model. Erectile response after glans penis administration of PGE(1)+5% SEPA cream (Topiglan, MacroChem Co., Lexington, MA, USA) was compared to the erectile response after intracavernosal administration of the triple-drug combination (1.65 mg papaverine, 25 microg phentolamine, and 0.5 microg PGE(1)). The placebo cream and increasing concentrations (0.25%, 2.5 mg/ml; 0.5%, 5 mg/ml; and 1%, 10 mg/ml) of PGE(1)+5% SEPA were applied in a total volume of 0.1 ml via a plastic needle-less syringe. The control triple-drug combination was administrated intracavernosally via a 30-gauge needle at the completion of each experiment to serve as a control reference. With each application of placebo, PGE(1)+SEPA, and the triple-drug combination, changes in intracavernosal pressure and systemic blood pressure were continuously monitored. Topical application of PGE(1)+SEPA induced increases in intracavernosal pressure in a dose-dependent manner, with minimal effects on systemic blood pressure. The increases obtained with 1% PGE(1) Topiglan cream were similar to the intracavernosal pressure values elicited by the standard intracavernosal triple-drug combination. These data demonstrate that topical glans penis application of PGE(1)+SEPA can induce an erectile response in cats with minimal systemic adverse effects. Oral pharmacological agents are the first-line treatment for male ED. Studies investigating the effectiveness of noninvasive modalities such as topical therapy should continue, because these agents have the potential to avoid the systemic effects commonly seen with oral therapies. Additionally, topical therapy may also benefit patients who are unresponsive to oral agents or have explicit contraindications. Topical PGE(1) application to the glans penis may become an important treatment option in selected patients suffering from erectile dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

The knowledge of mucous secretions has advanced considerably with respect to their altered physiological properties in various ear, nose and throat disorders. We review the physicochemical properties of normal mucus and abnormal mucus present in the airways during sinusitis, otitis media with effusion, etc. We have adapted the mucoactive drugs classification to the up-to-date european situation, presenting a bibliographic review. We have attempted to reconcile the agreed findings in the literature with the most recent advances in research that have resulted in new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of pathological hypersecretion in the airways.

ABSTRACT

Six cases of high-grade lymphoma affecting the nasal cavity are presented. Their main symptoms were nasal obstruction, epistaxis and rhinorrea. Clinical exploration showed an ulcerated lesion in four patients (all of them T/NK cell lymphomas) and an exofitic tumour in the other two (B cell lymphomas). Pathology was diagnostic for high grade lymphoma in all the six cases, immunohistochemical studies revealed that the atypical cells were T/NK in 4 cases and B in the other two cases. Genotypic analysis was done looking for rearrangement of the genes for Ig H or T-cell receptors. In situ hybridisation was done to detect Epstein-Barr virus RNA. Malignant lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity are unusual, its major prognostic factor is the clinical stage at presentation. To perform an early diagnosis this neoplasia must be suspected in the presence of an exofitic tumour (B cell lymphoma) or necrotic and ulcerated lesion (T/NK cell lymphoma).

ABSTRACT

This study investigates whether a hydrophilic coating (Resist), designed to inhibit bacterial adherence, applied to inflatable penile prostheses can prolong the effect of intraoperative antibiotics. The activity of antibiotic-soaked Bioflex (penile prosthetic substrate material) discs with and without Resist was examined by measuring the zone of inhibition following in vivo exposure in four groups of rabbits: 1, 2, 3 and 5 days' duration of disc implantation. Coated and uncoated discs were soaked in an aqueous solution of gentamicin and bacitracin. The implanted antibiotic-soaked discs were extracted, and the zone of inhibition against four microorganisms in vitro demonstrated that the Resist coating was especially effective against Staphylococcus epidermidis, and statistically significant improvements were observed for the coated over the uncoated substrate up to 3 days following implantation. This effect, and the anti-adherence properties of Resist, may prevent adhesion and colonization of some microorganisms to penile implants and reduce chances for infection.

Se presentan 6 casos de linfomas de alto grado que afectaban la cavidad nasal. Clínicamente los síntomas principales fueron obstrucción nasal, epístaxis y rinorrea. La exploración puso de manifiesto una lesión ulcerada en 4 casos (todos ellos linfomas T/NK) y exofítica en los otros dos (linfomas B). La histología fue diagnóstica para linfoma de alto grado en los 6 casos, la inmunohistoquímica reveló que las células atípicas eran T/NK en 4 casos, y B en los dos restantes. Se realizó un estudio de biología molecular buscando reordenamiento para Ig H y receptores de células T, e hibridación in situ para establecer relación con el virus de Epstein-Barr. Los linfomas nasales son tumores de aparición poco frecuente, su extensión es el factor que en mayor medida condiciona el pronóstico. Para diagnosticarlos precozmente su presencia debe sospecharse tanto en lesiones exofíticas (linfomas B) como en necróticas ulceradas (linfomas T/NK) (AU)

ABSTRACT

Phonatory and articulatory dysfunctions are frequent observations in Parkinson's disease. We have investigated, using acoustic measures, the effects of levodopa treatment on vocal function in 20 patients with Parkinson's disease before and after levodopa. These patients were also compared with a matched control group. The mean age was 63.5 +/- 9.66 years, Hoehn-Yahr stage was 2.38 +/- 0.45, and onset mean age was 56.5 +/- 10.36 years. Paired Wilcoxon tests were performed to compare measurements before and after levodopa. The acoustic analysis using Computerized Speech Lab and MultiDimensional Voice Program software programs (Kay Elemetrics, Lincoln Park, NJ, USA) showed that measurements of fundamental frequency (p < 0.017) were significantly increased after medication, whereas short-term frequency perturbation jitter (p < 0.033), soft phonation index (noise parameter) (p < 0.015 ), and frequency tremor intensity index (p < 0.018) were significantly decreased after medication. The objective measurements of acoustic analysis are useful in evaluating the dopaminergic pharmacologic response in Parkinson's disease. The improvement in fundamental frequency and other vocal parameters may be a result of decrease in laryngeal hypokinesia and rigidity.
