ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have revealed atypical features in the plastomes of the family Cactaceae, the largest lineage of succulent species adapted to arid and semi-arid regions. Most plastomes sequenced to date are from short-globose and cylindrical cacti, while little is known about plastomes of epiphytic cacti. Published cactus plastomes reveal reduction and complete loss of IRs, loss of genes, pseudogenization, and even degeneration of tRNA structures. Aiming to contribute with new insights into the plastid evolution of Cactaceae, particularly within the tribe Rhipsalideae, we de novo assembled and analyzed the plastomes of Lepismium cruciforme and Schlumbergera truncata, two South American epiphytic cacti. METHODS AND RESULTS: Our data reveal many gene losses in both plastomes and the first loss of functionality of the trnT-GGU gene in Cactaceae. The trnT-GGU is a pseudogene in L. cruciforme plastome and appears to be degenerating in the tribe Rhipsalideae. Although the plastome structure is conserved among the species of the tribe Rhipsalideae, with tribe-specific rearrangements, we mapped around 200 simple sequence repeats and identified nine nucleotide polymorphism hotspots, useful to improve the phylogenetic resolutions of the Rhipsalideae. Furthermore, our analysis indicated high gene divergence and rapid evolution of RNA editing sites in plastid protein-coding genes in Cactaceae. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that some characteristics of the Rhipsalideae tribe are conserved, such as plastome structure with IRs containing only the ycf2 and two tRNA genes, structural degeneration of the trnT-GGU gene and ndh complex, and lastly, pseudogenization of rpl33 and rpl23 genes, both plastid translation-related genes.

ABSTRACT

Chemotherapy with cytotoxic drugs remains the core treatment for cancer but, due to the difficulty to find general and usable biochemical differences between cancer cells and normal cells, many of these drugs are associated with lack of specificity, resulting in side effects and collateral cytotoxicity that impair patients' adherence to therapy. Novel cancer treatments in which the cytotoxic effect is maximized while adverse effects are reduced can be implemented by developing targeted therapies that exploit the specific features of cancer cells, such as the typical expression of aberrant glycans. Modification of drug delivery systems with lectins is one of the strategies to implement targeted chemotherapies, as lectins are able to specifically recognize and bind to cancer-associated glycans expressed at the surface of cancer cells, guiding the drug treatment towards these cells and not affecting healthy ones. In this paper, recent advances on the development of lectin-modified drug delivery systems for targeted cancer treatments are thoroughly reviewed, with a focus on their properties and performance in diverse applications, as well as their main advantages and limitations. The synthesis and analytical characterization of the cited lectin-modified drug delivery systems is also briefly described. A comparison with free-drug treatments and with antibody-modified drug delivery systems is presented, emphasizing the advantages of lectin-modified drug delivery systems. Main constraints and potential challenges of lectin-modified drug delivery systems, including key difficulties for clinical translation of these systems, and the required developments in this area, are also signalled.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 caused the pandemic situation experienced since the beginning of 2020, and many countries faced the rapid spread and severe form of the disease. Mechanisms of interaction between the virus and the host were observed during acute phase, but few data are available when related to immunity dynamics in convalescents. We conducted a longitudinal study, with 51 healthy donors and 62 COVID-19 convalescent patients, which these had a 2-month follow-up after symptoms recovery. Venous blood sample was obtained from all participants to measure blood count, subpopulations of monocytes, lymphocytes, natural killer cells and dendritic cells. Serum was used to measure cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, anti-N IgG and anti-S IgG/IgM antibodies. Statistic was performed by Kruskal-Wallis test, and linear regression with days post symptoms and antibody titers. All analysis had confidence interval of 95%. Less than 35% of convalescents were anti-S IgM+, while more than 80% were IgG+ in D30. Anti-N IgG decreased along time, with loss of seroreactivity of 13%. Eosinophil count played a distinct role on both antibodies during all study, and the convalescence was orchestrated by higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and IL-15, but initial stages were marked by increase in myeloid DCs, B1 lymphocytes, inflammatory and patrolling monocytes, G-CSF and IL-2. Later convalescence seemed to change to cytotoxicity mediated by T lymphocytes, plasmacytoid DCs, VEGF, IL-9 and CXCL10. Anti-S IgG antibodies showed the longest perseverance and may be a better option for diagnosis. The inflammatory pattern is yet present on initial stage of convalescence, but quickly shifts to a reparative dynamic. Meanwhile eosinophils seem to play a role on anti-N levels in convalescence, although may not be the major causative agent. We must highlight the importance of immunological markers on acute clinical outcomes, but their comprehension to potentialize adaptive system must be explored to improve immunizations and further preventive policies.

ABSTRACT

Alcoholic fermentation is one of man's most efficient food preservation processes, and innovations in this area are a trend in food science and nutrition. In addition to the classic Saccharomyces yeasts, various other species may have desirable characteristics for obtaining fruit wines. This study investigated the profile of non-Saccharomyces commercial yeasts compared with S. cerevisiae regarding pineapple wine's chemical composition and bioaccessibility. The fermentation profile of the yeasts Lachancea thermotolerans, Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Brettanomyces lambicus, and S. cerevisiae was evaluated for sugar and alcohol content, and the pineapple wines obtained were analyzed for amino acids, phenolics, and organic acids by HPLC and volatile profile by GC/MS. All yeast strains were able to produce ethanol and glycerol at acceptable levels. L. thermotolerans produced higher levels of lactic acid (0.95 g/L) and higher consumption of free amino acids. B. bruxellensis produced higher levels of individual phenolics and ethanol 109 g/L. The alcoholic fermentation process improved the bioaccessibility of phenolics such as catechin (237 %), epigallocatechin gallate (81 %), procyanidin B1 (61 %) and procyanidin B2 (61 %). The yeasts differed in their volatile profiles, with Brettanomyces and Lachancea producing higher levels of compounds associated with pineapple aroma, such as ester ethyl butyrate (260-270 µg/L). These results demonstrate the importance of choosing the yeast strain for the conduction of alcoholic fermentation and that the yeasts Brettanomyces and Lachancea showed technological potential in obtaining pineapple wines. This study contributes to developing processes for obtaining fruit wines by highlighting two non-Saccharomyces yeast species with technological potential for alcoholic fermentations.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition resulting from the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Impaired manual dexterity and cognitive impairment are common symptoms and are often associated with recurrent adverse events in this population. OBJECTIVE: To verify the association between cognitive performance and manual dexterity in people with PD. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional observational study, with 29 participants, who underwent cognitive and manual dexterity assessments, and the following tools were used: Trail Making Test, box and block test (BBT), Learning Test of Rey and Nine Hole Peg Test. Descriptive statistics for clinical and demographic data were performed using mean and standard deviation, and data normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Spearman's nonparametric test was used to determine the correlation between variables. RESULTS: Our findings revealed significant associations between cognitive performance and manual dexterity. The nine-hole peg test positively correlated with TMT-Part A and Part B, establishing a relationship between manual dexterity and cognitive functions such as attention and mental flexibility. On the other hand, BBT showed an inverse relationship with TMT-Part B, indicating that longer time on this task was associated with lower manual dexterity. CONCLUSION: Fine manual dexterity had a significant correlation with visual search skills and motor speed, while gross motor dexterity had a negative correlation with cognitive skills. No significant results were demonstrated regarding the interaction between manual dexterity and memory.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Heart transplantation is the gold standard for advanced heart failure treatment. This study examines the survival rates and risk factors for early mortality in adult heart transplant recipients at a Brazilian center. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study involved 255 adult heart transplant patients from a single center in Brazil. Data were collected from medical records and databases including three defined periods (2012-2015, 2016-2019, and 2020-2022). Statistical analysis employed Kaplan-Meier survival curves, Cox proportional hazards analysis for 30-day mortality risk factors, and Log-rank tests. RESULTS: The recipients were mostly male (74.9%), and the mean age was 46.6 years. Main causes of heart failure were idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (33.9%), Chagas cardiomyopathy (18%), and ischemic cardiomyopathy (14.3%). The study revealed an overall survival of 68.1% at one year, 58% at five years, and 40.8% at 10 years after heart transplantation. Survivalimproved significantly over time, combining the most recent periods (2016 to 2022) it was 73.2% in the first year and 63% in five years. The main risk factors for 30-day mortality were longer time on cardiopulmonary bypass, the initial period of transplants (2012 to 2015), older age of the donor, and nutritional status of the donor (overweight or obese). The main causes of death within 30 days post-transplant were infection and primary graft dysfunction. CONCLUSION: The survival analysis by period demonstrated that the increased surgical volume, coupled with the team's experience and modifications to the immunosuppression protocol, contributed to the improved early and mid-term outcomes.

ABSTRACT

There is limited knowledge about tick diversity in the Amazon region. Here, we survey small terrestrial mammals for tick infestation at the Rio Pardo settlement, Amazonas State, Brazil. Sampling included rainy and dry seasons and four ecotones (primary forest, forest in regeneration, field crops and households). Each animal was inspected for ticks, which, if present, were placed in 70% alcohol and identified. Parasitological indexes were calculated and the presence/absence of ticks on hosts was tested for possible associations with independent variables (ecotone, host sex, host order, host family, host age and season). A total of 208 small mammals were captured, 47 individuals (10 species) in the primary forest, 124 (15 species) in the forest in regeneration, 11 (7 species) in the field crops, and 26 (4 species) in the households. A total of 14 small mammals were infested by ticks (overall prevalence: 6.7%; 95% CI: 3.72 - 11.04%), which consisted of 51 specimens that were identified into four species, as follows: Amblyomma humerale (32 nymphs); Ixodes luciae (6 females); Amblyomma coelebs (1 nymph); and Ornithodoros mimon (1 larva). In addition, 11 larvae were retained as Amblyomma spp. Only host order showed association (P = 0.002) with tick infestation, with marsupials 5.5 times more infested than rodents. Our record of O. mimon on D. marsupialis is the first on this host species, and the first record of a Argasidae tick in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that actively screened free-living terrestrial small mammals and provided data on prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance of tick infestations in the Brazilian Amazonas state.

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials (FCM) assessed the safety of the substances 'wax, rice bran, oxidised' and 'wax, rice bran, oxidised, calcium salt', used as additives up to 0.3% in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide (PA), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in contact with all food types for long-term storage at room temperature and below, after hot-fill and/or heating. The substances consist of the chemical classes wax esters, carboxylic acids, alcohols and calcium salts of acids, along with an unidentified organic fraction up to ■■■■■ w/w. Migration into 10% ethanol and 4% acetic acid was below 0.012 mg/kg for each chemical class, and about 0.001 mg/kg for the unidentified fraction. In isooctane, migration was up to 0.297 mg/kg food for wax esters, below 0.01 mg/kg food for the other chemical classes and about 0.02 mg/kg food for the unidentified fraction. The contact with dry food and food simulated by 20% ethanol were considered covered by the migration tests with aqueous simulants. Based on genotoxicity assays and compositional analyses, the constituents of the chemical classes did not raise a concern for genotoxicity. The potential migration of individual constituents or groups of chemically-related compounds of the unidentified fraction would result in exposures below (for aqueous food) and above (for fatty food) the threshold of toxicological concern for genotoxic carcinogens. Therefore, the FCM Panel concluded that the substances are not of safety concern for the consumer, if used as additives up to 0.3% w/w in PET, PLA and rigid PVC materials and articles intended for contact with all food types except for fatty foods, for long-term storage at room temperature and below, including hot-fill and/or heating up to 100°C for up to 2 h.

ABSTRACT

Assessing measurement invariance and the interplay of discrimination, microaggressions, and resilience among Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) across time utilizing latent class and repeated measure analysis may provide novel insights. A total of 151 BWLWH in a southeastern U.S. city completed surveys focused on multiple forms of microaggressions and discrimination (race, gender, sexual orientation, or HIV-related) and resilience factors (social support, self-efficacy, post-traumatic growth) at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. To capture the psychosocial domains of discrimination, microaggressions, and resilience, three latent factors were developed and measured across three time points. Latent class analysis was also conducted to identify and compare meaningful subgroups based on varying levels of discrimination, microaggressions, and resilience reported. Three latent classes were created. MI testing suggested that measurement invariance was partially met (established metric invariance and scalar invariance), and it is possible to compare factor means of discrimination, microaggressions, and resilience across time. Latent factor mean scores of microaggressions and discrimination decreased after 3 and 6 months and increased for resilience after 6 months and varied over time across the three latent classes identified. The subgroup with the lowest level of discrimination and microaggressions and the highest level of resilience reported at baseline, experienced increases in resilience after months 3 and 6. Clinical interventions, research, and policies aimed at promoting resilience and reducing structural and social barriers linked to racism, sexism, HIV stigma, and classism are needed to improve the health and well-being of BWLWH.

ABSTRACT

Revealing unknown cues that regulate oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) function in remyelination is important to optimise the development of regenerative therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS). Platelets are present in chronic non-remyelinated lesions of MS and an increase in circulating platelets has been described in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mice, an animal model for MS. However, the contribution of platelets to remyelination remains unexplored. Here we show platelet aggregation in proximity to OPCs in areas of experimental demyelination. Partial depletion of circulating platelets impaired OPC differentiation and remyelination, without altering blood-brain barrier stability and neuroinflammation. Transient exposure to platelets enhanced OPC differentiation in vitro, whereas sustained exposure suppressed this effect. In a mouse model of thrombocytosis (Calr+/-), there was a sustained increase in platelet aggregation together with a reduction of newly-generated oligodendrocytes following toxin-induced demyelination. These findings reveal a complex bimodal contribution of platelet to remyelination and provide insights into remyelination failure in MS.

Global investment in developing COVID-19 vaccines has been substantial, but vaccine hesitancy has emerged due to misinformation. Concerns about adverse events, vaccine shortages, dosing confusion, mixing vaccines, and access issues contribute to hesitancy. Initially, the WHO recommended homologous vaccination (same vaccine for both doses), but evolving factors led to consideration of heterologous vaccination (different vaccines). The study compared reactogenicity and antibody response for both viral protein spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) in 205 participants who received three vaccination regimens: same vaccine for all doses (Pfizer), two initial doses of the same vaccine (CoronaVac or AstraZeneca), and a Pfizer booster. ChAdOx1 and BNT162b2 vaccines were the most reactogenic vaccines, while CoronaVac vaccine was the least. ChAdOx1 and BNT162b2 achieved 100% of S-IgG seropositivity with one dose, while CoronaVac required two doses, emphasizing the importance of the second dose in achieving complete immunization across the population with different vaccine regimes. Pfizer recipients showed the highest S-IgG antibody titers, followed by AstraZeneca recipients, both after the first and second doses. A third vaccine dose was essential to boost the S-IgG antibodies and equalize the antibody levels among the different vaccine schedules. CoronaVac induced N-IgG antibodies, while in the Pfizer and AstraZeneca groups, they were induced by a natural infection, reinforcing the role of N protein as a biomarker of infection.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an artificial intelligence-based classification model for the detection of pulmonary embolism in computed tomography angiography. The proposed model, developed from public data and validated on a large dataset from a tertiary hospital, uses a two-dimensional approach that integrates temporal series to classify each slice of the examination and make predictions at both slice and examination levels. The training process consists of two stages: first using a convolutional neural network InceptionResNet V2 and then a recurrent neural network long short-term memory model. This approach achieved an accuracy of 93% at the slice level and 77% at the examination level. External validation using a hospital dataset resulted in a precision of 86% for positive pulmonary embolism cases and 69% for negative pulmonary embolism cases. Notably, the model excels in excluding pulmonary embolism, achieving a precision of 73% and a recall of 82%, emphasizing its clinical value in reducing unnecessary interventions. In addition, the diverse demographic distribution in the validation dataset strengthens the model's generalizability. Overall, this model offers promising potential for accurate detection and exclusion of pulmonary embolism, potentially streamlining diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread in the environment, and soils, specifically, are hotspots for microorganisms with inherent antibiotic resistance. Manure and sludge used as fertilizers in agricultural production have been shown to contain vast amounts of ARGs, and due to continued applications, ARGs accumulate in agricultural soils. Some soils, however, harbor a resilience capacity that could depend on specific soil properties, as well as the presence of predatory bacteria that are able to hydrolyse living bacteria, including bacteria of clinical importance. The objectives of this study were to (i) investigate if the antibiotic resistance profile of the soil microbiota could be differently affected by the addition of cow manure, chicken manure, and sludge, and (ii) investigate if the amendments had an effect on the presence of predatory bacteria. The three organic amendments were mixed separately with a field soil, divided into pots, and incubated in a greenhouse for 28 days. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was used to quantify three ARGs, two predatory bacteria, and total number of bacteria. In this study, we demonstrated that the choice of organic amendment significantly affected the antibiotic resistance profile of soil, and promoted the growth of predatory bacteria, while the total number of bacteria was unaffected.

ABSTRACT

Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands devastates forest species worldwide, causing significant ecological and economic impacts. The European chestnut (Castanea sativa) is susceptible to this hemibiotrophic oomycete, whereas the Asian chestnuts (Castanea crenata and Castanea mollissima) are resistant and have been successfully used as resistance donors in breeding programs. The molecular mechanisms underlying the different disease outcomes among chestnut species are a key foundation for developing science-based control strategies. However, these are still poorly understood. Dual RNA sequencing was performed in C. sativa and C. crenata roots inoculated with P. cinnamomi. The studied time points represent the pathogen's hemibiotrophic lifestyle previously described at the cellular level. Phytophthora cinnamomi expressed several genes related to pathogenicity in both chestnut species, such as cell wall-degrading enzymes, host nutrient uptake transporters, and effectors. However, the expression of effectors related to the modulation of host programmed cell death (elicitins and NLPs) and sporulation-related genes was higher in the susceptible chestnut. After pathogen inoculation, 1,556 and 488 genes were differentially expressed by C. crenata and C. sativa, respectively. The most significant transcriptional changes occur at 2 h after inoculation (hai) in C. sativa and 48 hai in C. crenata. Nevertheless, C. crenata induced more defense-related genes, indicating that the resistant response to P. cinnamomi is controlled by multiple loci, including several pattern recognition receptors, genes involved in the phenylpropanoid, salicylic acid and ethylene/jasmonic acid pathways, and antifungal genes. Importantly, these results validate previously observed cellular responses for C. crenata. Collectively, this study provides a comprehensive time-resolved description of the chestnut-P. cinnamomi dynamic, revealing new insights into susceptible and resistant host responses and important pathogen strategies involved in disease development.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Early identification and management are crucial, especially in economically challenged regions with limited healthcare access. AIMS: To develop nomograms for individualized risk estimation for metabolic syndrome in young people from low-income regions. METHODS: We assessed 496 college students from two Brazilian cities with Gini indices ≤0.56. Of these, 69.9% were female, 65.1% were younger than 20 years, 71.8% were non-white, and 64.3% were enrolled in health-related courses. For external validity, we assessed metabolic syndrome in a subset of 375 students. RESULTS: We found 10 variables associated with abdominal obesity by logistic regression: age, biological sex, physical education facilities, enrollment in sports competitions during elementary school, grade retention, physical education as the preferred subject, physical education classes per week, and enrollment in sports training in secondary school (score A); adherence to 24 h movement behaviors (B score); and body weight (score C). We designed three nomograms (for scores A, B, and C), all of which showed acceptable performance according to the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (≥0.70) and calibration (Hosmer-Lemeshow test, p > 0.05). In the external validation, we observed higher predictive capability for the A and B scores, while the C score had lower but still acceptable predictive ability. CONCLUSIONS: User-friendly self-reported data accurately predict metabolic syndrome among youths from economically challenging areas.

ABSTRACT

Quantum computing is tipped to lead the future of global technological progress. However, the obstacles related to quantum software development are an actual challenge to overcome. In this scenario, this work presents an implementation of the quantum search algorithm in Atos Quantum Assembly Language (AQASM) using the quantum software stack my Quantum Learning Machine (myQLM) and the programming development platform Quantum Learning Machine (QLM). We present the creation of a virtual quantum processor whose configurable architecture allows the analysis of induced quantum noise effects on the quantum algorithms. The codes are available throughout the manuscript so that readers can replicate them and apply the methods discussed in this article to solve their own quantum computing projects. The presented results are consistent with theoretical predictions and demonstrate that AQASM and QLM are powerful tools for building, implementing, and simulating quantum hardware.

ABSTRACT

Pseudomonas are known as higher producers of secondary metabolites with antimicrobial properties and plant growth promoters, including resistance induction. These mechanisms should be an alternative to pesticide use in crop production. Phakopsora pachyrhizi causes Asian soybean rust, representing a high loss of yield around the world. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the application of secondary metabolites produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa LV strain from the semi-purified fraction F4A in soybean plants to induce plant resistance against P. pachyrhizi in field conditions. The experimental design was performed in randomized blocks with three replicates using two F4A doses (1 and 10 µg mL-1) combined or not with fungicides (Unizeb Gold® or Sphere Max®). The control treatment, with Uni + Sph, saponins, flavonoids, and sphingolipids, showed higher intensities in the plants. In contrast, plants treated with the F4A fraction mainly exhibited fatty acid derivatives and some non-identified compounds with nitrogen. Plants treated with Sphere Max®, with or without F4A10, showed higher intensities of glycosylated flavonoids, such as kaempferol, luteolin, narigenin, and apigenin. Plants treated with F4A showed higher intensities of genistein and fatty acid derivatives. These increases in flavonoid compound biosynthesis and antioxidant properties probably contribute to the protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS).

ABSTRACT

The increasing need for sustainable agricultural practices, combined with the demand for enhanced crop productivity, has led to a growing interest in utilizing microorganisms for biocontrol of diseases and pests, as well as for growth promotion. In Brazilian agriculture, the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) has become increasingly prevalent, with a corresponding rise in the number of registered microbial inoculants each year. PGPR and PGPF occupy diverse niches within the rhizosphere, playing a crucial role in soil nutrient cycling and influencing a wide range of plant physiological processes. This review examines the primary mechanisms employed by these microbial agents to promote growth, as well as the strategy of co-inoculation to enhance product efficacy. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the microbial inoculants currently available in Brazil, detailing the microorganisms accessible for major crops, and discuss the market's prospects for the research and development of novel products in light of current challenges faced in the coming years.

Manganese (Mn2+) is an abundant chemical element in the earth's crust and is present in soil, water, and industrial environments, including mining, welding, and battery manufacturing. Manganese (Mn) is an essential metal needed as a cofactor for many enzymes to maintain proper biological functions. Excessive exposure to Mn in high doses can result in a condition known as manganism, which results in disorders of the neurological, cardiac, and pulmonary systems. The aim of this study was to assess cardiac susceptibility to manganese intoxication in Colossoma macropomum subjected to a fixed concentration of 4 mg/mL for a period of up to 96 h. This study used 45 Tambaquis (30.38 ± 3.5 g) divided into five groups of 9 animals/treatment. The treated groups were exposed to the manganese concentration for a period of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, after which the animals' ECGs were recorded, showing heart rate, R-R interval, P-Q interval, QRS complex duration and S-T interval. The results showed that cardiac activity decreased as the contact time increased, with an increase in the P-Q and S-T intervals. This indicates that the breakdown of circulatory homeostasis in these animals was caused by contact time with manganese.

ABSTRACT

Fish age and growth data are crucial for understanding vital species' traits and their populations. Boarfish is a pelagic species widely distributed in the Northeast Atlantic that is one of the most discarded non-commercial species on the Portuguese coast. Due to its potential valorisation as a new fishery in the Northeast Atlantic, boarfish has become object of interest in several published studies. However, since no age standard protocol has been implemented for boarfish, studies have used a variety of different otolith preparation techniques to estimate age, leading to contradicting and discrepant results. This research aims to consolidate biological insights into boarfish age and growth, lay the foundation for a standardized ageing protocol and serve as a benchmark study for the Portuguese west coast before commercial exploitation. Through the comparison of two otolith ageing methodologies, this study recommends using whole otoliths as the best method, revealing a maximum age of 15 years. The growth pattern estimated, indicated a biphasic growth pattern, with a faster initial growth rate that slows down at 2.4 years, the moment of change, when energy is allocated for sexual maturation. This finding was corroborated by a maturity ogive and analysis of fish size and otolith length relationship.
