ABSTRACT

We identified 4316 unselected incident cases of early-onset breast cancers (<51 ears of age at diagnosis) in 18 Polish hospitals between 1996 and 2003. We were able to obtain a blood sample for DNA analysis from 3472 of these (80.4%). All cases were tested for the presence of three founder mutations in BRCA1. The proportion of cases with a BRCA1 mutation was 5.7%. The hereditary proportions were higher than this for women with breast cancer diagnosed before age 40 (9%), for women with cancer of medullary or atypical medullary histology (28%), for those with bilateral cancer (29%) or with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer (13%). It is reasonable to offer genetic testing to women with early-onset breast cancer in Poland.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of p53 in colorectal cancer. DESIGN: A retrospective study to investigate the correlation between p53 in tumour tissue and the course of patients' disease. PATIENTS: One hundred and two patients who underwent radical surgery for colorectal cancer and were followed up for a minimum of 5 years, or until death, were included in this study. METHODS: The p53 expression in tumour tissue was studied by immunohistochemistry using CM1 polyclonal rabbit antibody and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material. RESULTS: p53 accumulation was detected in 46% (47/102) of the tumours. There was no significant difference in long-term survival between the patients with p53 positive and negative tumours (P=0.86). Five-year survival rates were 55% for p53 positive tumours compared with 56% for patients with p53 negative tumours. However, patients with p53 overexpressing tumours showed a higher local recurrence rate than those having carcinomas with undetectable levels of p53, 23% versus 9% respectively; the 2-year actuarial rates of 26% and 9% were statistically different (P=0.015). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that in colorectal carcinoma accumulation of p53 is not associated with a difference in long-term prognosis. However, this phenomenon might be useful in the identification of patients with a high risk of local recurrence.

ABSTRACT

This report describes the fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic findings in 17 rare malignant breast tumors. The series consisted of invasive cribriform carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, apocrine carcinoma, carcinoma with pseudosarcomatous metaplasia, carcinosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, malignant phyllodes tumors, primary malignant lymphomas, plasmocytoma, metastatic melanoma and metastatic renal clear cell carcinoma. Besides cytomorphology, the results of immunostaining in eight cases are presented, as is a review of the literature. It is important for rare primary malignancies, as well as for metastatic tumors, to be diagnosed, or at least have the diagnosis suggested, preoperatively by FNA and immunocytochemistry, permitting better therapy planning.

ABSTRACT

In this paper the authors described those of the breast fine needle aspirates which were difficult for interpretation e.g. clear-cut differentiation between benign and malignant character of the lesion could not be made. There were 40 such cases (1.96%) out of 2332 breast tumors biopsied between 1987-1989. In the cases that proved to be malignant on histology the authors described cytological features which speak in favour of malignancy. In the group of smears which proved to be benign on histology the authors described the features that imitate atypia and should not be misdiagnosed as malignant. The described criteria may be of some help in cytological diagnosis of breast masses.

ABSTRACT

Clinical data and morphological features of the storiform neurofibroma, presenting as an exophytic tumor of the trunk in 30 years old white man are described. This benign tumor, is microscopically similar to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and differs from the letter by the presence of melanin containing cells.
