ABSTRACT

Low temperature significantly inhibits the plant growth in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), prompting the exploration of effective strategies to mitigate low temperature stress. Several priming methods enhance low temperature stress tolerant, however, the role of ozone priming remains unclear in wheat. Here we found ozone priming alleviated low temperature stress in wheat. Transcriptome analysis showed that ozone priming positively modulated 'photosynthesis-antenna proteins' pathway in wheat under low temperature. Which was confirmed by the results of the ozone-primed plants had higher trapped energy flux and electron transport flux per reaction, and less damage to chloroplasts than non-primed plants under low temperature. Ozone priming also mitigated the overstimulation of glutathione metabolism and induced the accumulation of total ascorbic acid and glutathione, maintained redox homeostasis in wheat under low temperature. Moreover, gene expressions and enzyme activities in glycolysis pathways were upregulated in ozone priming comparing with non-priming after the low temperature stress. Furthermore, exogenous antibiotics significantly increased low temperature tolerance, which further proved that the inhibition of ribosome biogenesis by ozone priming was involved in low temperature tolerance in wheat. In conclusion, ozone priming enhanced wheat low temperature tolerance through promoting light-harvesting capacity, redox homeostasis, and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as inhibiting ribosome biogenesis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition and nutritional risk are risk factors for many adverse health outcomes in older adults, but they have rarely been assessed in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the availability of Elderly Nutritional Indicators for Geriatric Malnutrition Assessment (ENIGMA), a nutritional scale originally developed to predict mortality, in assessing nutritional risks and predicting adverse health outcomes in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This was a population-based longitudinal cohort study (Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey), with a 4-y follow-up of 2063 community-dwelling adults aged 65 y or older. Nutritional risks were assessed via the use of ENIGMA and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) at baseline (the 2014 wave). Cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living/Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale, and Frailty Index, respectively, at baseline and 4-y follow-up (the 2018 wave). Mortality was measured by survival status and duration of exposure to death from baseline to follow-up. The associations of nutritional risks with prevalent/incident cognitive impairment, functional limitation and frailty, and 4-y mortality were estimated using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusting for confounders. The discriminatory accuracy of ENIGMA and GNRI for these adverse health outcomes were compared by receiver operating characteristic analyses. RESULTS: According to ENIGMA, 48.6% of the Chinese community-dwelling older adults (age: 86.5±11.3 y) showed moderate and high nutritional risk. Nutritional risks defined by the ENIGMA were significantly associated with increased prevalence and incidence of cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty (odds ratio ranging from 1.79 to 89.6, values ranging from P < 0.001 to 0.048) but were mostly insignificant for that defined by GNRI. With respect to 4-y mortality, nutritional risks as defined by GNRI showed better prediction effects than those defined by ENIGMA. Receiver operating characteristic analyses indicated that nutritional risks defined by ENIGMA had better discriminatory accuracy than those defined by GNRI for prevalent and incident cognitive impairment (C = 0.73 vs 0.64, P < 0.001; C = 0.65 vs 0.59, P = 0.015, respectively), functional limitation (C = 0.74 vs 0.63, P < 0.001 at baseline; C = 0.61 vs 0.56, P = 0.016 at follow-up), frailty (C = 0.85 vs 0.67, P < 0.001 at baseline; C = 0.64 vs 0.55, P < 0.001 at follow-up), and even 4-y mortality (C = 0.68 vs 0.64, P = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS: ENIGMA could serve as a nutritional risk screening tool that has a robust role in predicting cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. It may be recommended for early nutritional risk screening and has the potential to guide early nutritional intervention in communities and primary care settings in China.

ABSTRACT

With the continuous advancement of wearable technology and advanced medical monitoring, there is an increasing demand for electronic devices that can adapt to complex environments and have high perceptual sensitivity. Here, a novel artificial injury perception device based on an Ag/HfOx/ITO/PET flexible memristor is designed to address the limitations of current technologies in multimodal perception and environmental adaptability. The memristor exhibits excellent resistive switching (RS) performance and mechanical flexibility under different bending angles (BAs), temperatures, humid environment, and repetitive folding conditions. Further, the device demonstrates the multimodal perception and conversion capabilities toward voltage, mechanical, and thermal stimuli through current response tests under different conditions, enabling not only the simulation of artificial injury perception but also holds promise for monitoring and controlling the movement of robotic arms. Moreover, the logical operation capability of the memristor-based reconfigurable logic (MRL) gates is also demonstrated, proving the device has great potential applications with sensing, storage, and memory functions. Overall, this study not only provides a direction for the development of the next-generation flexible multimodal sensors, but also has significant implications for technological advancements in many fields such as robotic arms, electronic skin (e-skin), and medical monitoring.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the electronic properties and transport characteristics of WSiGeN4/graphene heterostructures were explored by combining the quantum transport method with first-principle calculations. The band structures indicate that the heterostructures can form either p-type or n-type Schottky contacts, depending on the stacking mode. Due to the self-formed asymmetric Schottky contacts, we design an asymmetric van der Waals (vdW) metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structure, which exhibits a pronounced asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) curve. The corresponding physical mechanisms are attributed to carrier transport mechanisms, which are primarily governed by thermionic excitation at positive bias voltages and tunneling effects at negative bias voltages. Our study offers a viable strategy for integrating asymmetric Schottky barriers into MSM configurations, laying the groundwork for a wider range of applications in a range of Janus two-dimensional semiconductors.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, global climate change in tandem with increased human activity has resulted in habitat degradation or the migration of rare medicinal plants, potentially impacting the quality of medicinal herbs. Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus is a valuable bulk medicinal material in Northwest China. As the demand for this medicinal herb continues to increase in both domestic and international markets, ensuring the sustainable development of high-quality Astragali Radix is important. In this study, the maximum entropy (Maxent) model was applied, thereby incorporating 136 distribution records, along with 39 environmental factors of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus, to assess the quality zonation and potential distribution of this species in China under climate change. RESULTS: The results showed that the elevation, annual mean temperature, precipitation of wettest month, solar radiation in June, and mean temperature of warmest quarter were the critical environmental factors influencing the accumulation of astragaloside IV and Astragalus polysaccharide in A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. Among the twelve main environmental variables, annual mean temperature, elevation, precipitation of the wettest month, and solar radiation in November were the four most important factors influencing the distribution of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. In addition, ecological niche modelling revealed that highly suitable habitats were mainly located in central and western Gansu, eastern Qinghai, northern Shaanxi, southern Ningxia, central Inner Mongolia, central Shanxi, and northern Hebei. However, the future projections under climate change suggested a contraction of these suitable areas, shifting towards northeastern high-latitude and high-elevation mountains. CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide essential insights for developing adaptive strategies for A. membranaceus var. mongholicus cultivation in response to climate change and can inform future research on this species. By considering the identified environmental factors and the potential impacts of the predicted climate changes, we can visualize the regional distribution of high-quality Radix Astragali and develop conservation strategies to protect and restore its suitable habitats.

ABSTRACT

Microorganisms are essential in the decomposition of corpses and play a significant role in forensic science. However, previous studies have primarily focused on animal remains, specifically the gut, skin, and burial environment. Insufficient research has been conducted on the microbiota of human cadavers, especially in cases of advanced decomposition and additional tissues, resulting in a lack of relevant reference data. In this study, the microbiota of eight cadavers at different stages of decomposition were detected using 16S rRNA, metagenomic sequencing and 2bRAD-M sequencing. Nine different sites, including oral and nasal cavities, heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, muscle and gut, were analysed and the efficacy of these methods was evaluated. The results showed that 16S rRNA sequencing was the most cost-effective method for the study of cadavers in the early stages of decomposition, whereas for cadaveric tissues in the late stages of decomposition, 2bRAD-M could overcome host contamination more effectively than metagenomic sequencing. This paves the way for new opportunities in data retrieval and promotes in-depth investigations into the microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Skin tear (ST) is a public health problem in older adults; they substantially increase the risk of complications and cause serious adverse consequences and health care burden. AIM: To estimate the pooled prevalence and incidence of ST among older adults. METHODS: Ten databases were systematically searched from their inception to July 27, 2023. Two researchers performed a systematic review independently according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. All inconsistencies were resolved by a principal researcher. The pooled prevalence and incidence of ST were estimated in R 4.3.1 program. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of ST was 6.0 % (95 % confidence interval (CI): 3.0%-11.0 %, I2 = 98 %), and the pooled incidence was 11.0 % (95 % CI: 5.0%-19.0 %, I2 = 94 %). The prevalence of ST was 11.0 % (95 % CI: 5.0%-19.0 %, I2 = 95 %) in long-term care facilities, 5.0 % (95 % CI: 3.0%-9.0 %, I2 = 86 %) in Europe, and 7.0 % (95 % CI: 1.0%-16.0 %, I2 = 82 %) in the Skin Tear Audit Research classification system (STAR). It has stabilized at 6.0 % since 2021. The incidence of ST was 15.0 % (95 % CI: 11.0%-20.0 %, I2 = 66 %) in long-term care facilities in Japan and 4.0 % (95 % CI: 2.0%-6.0 %) in Canada. CONCLUSIONS: Older adults are at a high risk for ST. Our findings emphasize the importance of epidemiologic studies and further exploring assessment tools for ST. Healthcare professionals should pay attention to ST, identify high-risk individuals and associated factors, and implement targeted prevention strategies for older adults.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To explore a novel ultrasound (US) modality for lumbar transforaminal epidural injections (TFEIs) in patients with low back pain (LBP) and L5 radicular pain combined with high iliac crest (HIC). METHODS: One-hundred and forty-one patients were retrospectively stratified into two groups based on the treatment they received: novel group, receiving US-guided and fluoroscopy (FL)-controlled TFEIs using a sagittal oblique approach between the superior articular process of L5 and S1, and control group, receiving US-guided TFEIs with conventional transverse approach combined with FL confirmation. Accuracy of contrast dispersing into lumbar epidural space was set as the primary endpoint. Radiation dosages, procedure time, numeric rating scale (NRS) scores, Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ) scores, adverse events, and rescue analgesic requirement were also recorded. The generalized liner mixed model (GLMMs) was employed to compare the repeatedly measured variables between groups, taking individual confounding factors as covariance. RESULTS: The accuracy of TFEIs was 92.8% and 65.2% in novel and control group, with a significant difference of 26.7% (95% CI: 15.4%, 39.8%) between two modalities (p < 0.001). Significant pain relief was observed in novel group as opposed to control group after one injection. Procedure time in novel group (8.4 ± 1.6 min) was shorter than control group (15.8 ± 3.5 min) (p < 0.001) with less radiation dosage (3047 ± 5670 vs. 8808 ± 1039 µGy/m2, p < 0.001). Significantly, lower incidence of L5 paresthesia occurred in novel group. Statistical differences of NRS scores between the novel and control group were reached at 1 week after procedure (1 (IQR: - 1-3) vs. 3 (IQR: - 1-7), p = 0.006), while not reached at both 1- (1 (IQR: 0-2) vs. 1 (IQR: - 1-3), p = 0.086) or 3-month follow-up (0 (IQR: - 1-1) vs. 1 (IQR: 0-2), p = 0.094). Both groups showed similar functional improvement (F = 0.103, p = 0.749) during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The novel sonographic technique provided superior accuracy needle placement and better pain-relieving effect through one injection as compared to the routine transverse approach. Consequently, in situations where the HIC imposed limitations for TFEIs performance on L5, the novel technique should be recommended to consider increasing accurate puncture, minimizing radiation exposure, consuming procedure time, and reducing the risk of neuraxial injury.

ABSTRACT

DNA methylation is a key epigenetic mechanism orchestrating gene expression networks in many biological processes. Nonetheless, studying the role of specific gene methylation events in fish faces challenges. In this study, we validate the regulation of DNA methylation on empty spiracles homeobox 2 (emx2) expression with decitabine treatment in Chinese tongue sole testis cells. We used the emx2 gene as the target gene and developed a new DNA methylation editing system by fusing dnmt3a with catalytic dead Cas9 (dCas9) and demonstrated its ability for sequence-specific DNA methylation editing. Results revealed that utilizing dCas9-dnmt3a to target emx2 promoter region led to increased DNA methylation levels and decreased emx2 expression in Chinese tongue sole testis cells. More importantly, the DNA methylation editing significantly suppressed the expression of MYC proto-oncogene, bHLH transcription factor (myc), one target gene of emx2. Furthermore, we assessed the off-target effects of dCas9-dnmt3a and confirmed no significant impact on the predicted off-target gene expression. Taken together, we developed the first DNA methylation editing system in marine species and demonstrated its effective editing ability in Chinese tongue sole cells. This provides a new strategy for both epigenetic research and molecular breeding of marine species.

ABSTRACT

Aging-related cardiac fibrosis represents the principal pathological progression in cardiovascular aging. The Muscleblind-like splicing regulator 2 (MBNL2) has been unequivocally established as being associated with cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, its role in aging-related cardiac fibrosis remains unexplored. This investigation revealed an elevation of MBNL2 levels in the aged heart and senescent cardiac fibroblasts. Notably, the inhibition of MBNL2 demonstrated a capacity to mitigate H2O2-induced myofibroblast transformation and aging-related cardiac fibrosis. Further mechanistic exploration unveiled that aging heightened the expression of SENP1 and impeded the SUMO1 binding with KLF4, and SUMOylation of KLF4 effectively increased by the inhibition of MBNL2. Additionally, the inhibition of TGF-ß1/SMAD3 signaling attenuated the impact of over-expression of MBNL2 in inducing senescence and cardiac fibrosis. MBNL2, by orchestrating SUMOylation of KLF4, upregulating the TGF-ß1/SMAD3 signaling pathway, emerges as a significant promoter of aging-related cardiac fibrosis. This discovery identifies a novel regulatory target for managing aging-related cardiac fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

The prognoses of patients who undergo open spinal endoscopy (OSE) decompression significantly differ by scoliosis type and symptom despite the use of uniform standards and procedures for the decompression surgery. These differences may be directly related to the selection and formulation of surgical strategies but their cause remains unclear. The aim of this study was to verify and evaluate the efficacy of the "Symptom, Stenosis and Segment classification (SSS classification)" in determining an appropriate surgical strategy and to analyze the differences in the outcomes of different patients after receiving the selected surgical strategy. The results of this study ultimately provide a theoretical basis for the specific optimization of surgical strategies guided by the "SSS classification". This work was a retrospective study. We reviewed 55 patients with scoliosis and spinal stenosis who underwent "pear-shaped" decompression under OSE from May 2021 to June 2023 treated by our surgical team. To classify different types of patients, we defined the "SSS classification" system. The permutation and combination of subtypes in Symptom (including three subtypes: Convex = v, Concave = c and Bilateral = b), Stenosis (including three subtypes: Convex = v, Concave = c and Bilateral = b), and Segment (including two subtypes: Edge = e and Inside = i) yields 18 possible types (details in Table 1) in this classification system. To classify different types of surgeries, we also defined the operation system. The VAS Back and VAS Leg scores after surgical treatment were significantly lower in all patients 3 months after surgery than before surgery. (**P < 0.05). The Svve type accounted for the greatest proportion of patients (62.50%) in the VAS back remission group, and the Scce type accounted for the greatest proportion (57.14%) in the VAS back ineffective group. According to the VAS leg score, the percentage of patients in whom Svve was detected in the VAS leg remission group reached 60.87%, and the percentage of patients in whom Svve was detected in the VAS leg ineffective group reached 44.44%. Svve accounted for the greatest proportion of cases (61.22%) in the JOA-effective group, and Scce accounted for the greatest proportion of cases (50.00%) in the JOA-ineffective group. In the JOA-effective group, the Ovv type accounted for the greatest proportion (up to 79.59%), while in the JOA-ineffective group, Occ and Ovv accounted for 50.00% of the cases each. The proportions of Svve type were the highest in the healthy group (up to 60.00%) and the ODI-effective group (up to 50.00%). The Ovv type accounted for the greatest proportion of patients in the ODI-effective group (up to 80.00%), and the Occ type accounted for the greatest proportion of patients in the ODI-ineffective group (up to 60.00%). Most of the surgical plans formulated by the "SSS classification" method were considered appropriate, and only when the symptoms of patients were located on the concave side did the endoscopic decompression plan used in the present study have a limited ability to alleviate symptoms.

ABSTRACT

The transitioning of neural stem cells (NSCs) between quiescent and proliferative states is fundamental for brain development and homeostasis. Defects in NSC reactivation are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Drosophila quiescent NSCs extend an actin-rich primary protrusion toward the neuropil. However, the function of the actin cytoskeleton during NSC reactivation is unknown. Here, we reveal the fine filamentous actin (F-actin) structures in the protrusions of quiescent NSCs by expansion and super-resolution microscopy. We show that F-actin polymerization promotes the nuclear translocation of myocardin-related transcription factor, a microcephaly-associated transcription factor, for NSC reactivation and brain development. F-actin polymerization is regulated by a signaling cascade composed of G protein-coupled receptor Smog, G protein αq subunit, Rho1 guanosine triphosphatase, and Diaphanous (Dia)/Formin during NSC reactivation. Further, astrocytes secrete a Smog ligand folded gastrulation to regulate Gαq-Rho1-Dia-mediated NSC reactivation. Together, we establish that the Smog-Gαq-Rho1 signaling axis derived from astrocytes, an NSC niche, regulates Dia-mediated F-actin dynamics in NSC reactivation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FOF) has emerged as a significant public health issue, contributing to excess disability among middle-aged and older adults. The association between FOF and mortality remains unclear. METHODS: Prominent electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, CINHAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine disc, and Wanfang Database) were searched from inception until October 21, 2023 (data updated on June 9, 2024), for cohort or longitudinal studies investigating the association between FOF and mortality. The heterogeneity between studies was quantitatively assessed using I2. A fixed-effect model calculated the pooled effect size. RESULTS: A total of seven cohort studies, including 27,714 participants, were analyzed in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The meta-analysis results demonstrated a positive association between FOF and mortality, with a significant increase in the risk of mortality for those with FOF (hazard ratio [HR]:1.29, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.19-1.41, p < 0.05). Subgroup analysis indicated that age, male sex, clinical diagnosis of depression, number of chronic diseases, activity restriction due to FOF, and FOF levels were associated with mortality. CONCLUSIONS: FOF and mortality have a positive association, which needs to be confirmed by further prospective studies with large samples and long-term follow-up to provide evidence for clinicians to intervene in FOF to reduce mortality in middle-aged and older adults.

(1) Background: In-stent Restenosis (ISR) is a major factor influencing the prognosis and revascularization of target lesions. The plaque composition is unclear; therefore, it is critical to investigate ISR composition to identify clinical intervention markers. (2) Methods: This study was conducted on 36 patients with drug-eluting stent restenosis. The patients were classified into a Low Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (L-NLR) and High Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (H-NLR) according to the median NLR level of 36 patients. Discrepancies in the current information such as baseline data, biochemical examination, cardiac ultrasound data, etc., were examined to identify the underlying risk factors, and a multifactorial linear regression analysis of plaque properties was conducted. (3) Results: NLR = 2.64 was utilized to classify 18 patients into the L-NLR group and 18 patients into the H-NLR group. There were statistically significant differences in age, a pre-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) SYNTAX II score, a C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, plaque loading, a fibro-lipid tissue area, calcified nubs, and virtual histology-thin fibrous cap atherosclerotic (VH-TCFA). The significant impacts of variations in age, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels, and IL-6 levels on the plaque stress and percentage of the fibro-lipid tissue in virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) were identified through multifactorial linear regression. (4) Conclusions: The high NLR group demonstrated increased myocardial injury severity, consistent with higher SYNTAX II scores, a higher plaque burden, and higher proportions of vulnerable components. NLR proved to be a risk factor for both the plaque load and the proportion of the fibro-lipid tissue in ISR.

ABSTRACT

The RNA-guided clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas12b system represents the third family of CRISPR-Cas systems that are harnessed for genome editing. However, only a few nucleases have demonstrated activity in human cells, and their in vivo therapeutic potential remains uncertain. In this study, a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-activation assay is conducted to screen a panel of 15 Cas12b orthologs, and four of them exhibited editing activity in mammalian cells. Particularly noteworthy is the NiCas12b derived from Nitrospira sp., which recognizes a "TTN" protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) and facilitates efficient genome editing in various cell lines. Importantly, NiCas12b also exhibits a high degree of specificity, rendering it suitable for therapeutic applications. As proof of concept, the adeno-associated virus (AAV) is employed to introduce NiCas12b to target the cholesterol regulatory gene proprotein convertase subtilisin/ kexin type 9 (Pcsk9) in the mouse liver. After 4 weeks of injections, an impressive is observed over 16.0% insertion/deletion (indel) efficiency, resulting in a significant reduction in serum cholesterol levels. NiCas12b provides a novel option for both basic research and clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a novel two-dimensional monolayer material, TaF4, are investigated using first-principles calculations. The dynamical and thermal stabilities of two-dimensional monolayer TaF4 were confirmed using its phonon dispersion spectrum and molecular dynamics calculations. The band structure obtained via the high-accuracy HSE06 (Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof 2006) functional theory revealed that monolayer two-dimensional TaF4 is an indirect bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap width of 2.58 eV. By extracting the exchange interaction intensities and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in a J1-J2-J3-K Heisenberg model, it was found that two-dimensional monolayer TaF4 possesses a Néel-type antiferromagnetic ground state and has a relatively high Néel temperature (208 K) and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (2.06 meV). These results are verified via the magnon spectrum.

ABSTRACT

In this work, a double-end diffusion bonded Nd:YVO4 self-Raman laser was designed to drive an intracavity, noncritically-phase-matched KTiOAsO4 (KTA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Both conversion efficiency and output power at 1.7 µm (the wavelength of the OPO signal field) were improved by effectively reducing the thermal lens effect and increasing the effective length of self-Raman medium. At an incident pump power of 15.4 W, the output power for 1742 nm output laser reached 2.16 W with a conversion efficiency of 14%, and the output having a pulse width of 10.5 ns and a pulse repetition frequency of 90 kHz. The competition between the OPO and cascaded Raman laser was observed when the incident pump power was above 12.4 W. The results highlight that in order to improve output power at 1742 nm, it is critical that both the cascaded, second-Stokes field at 1313 nm and the signal field generated at 1534 nm from the 1064 nm field driving the KTA-OPO be minimized, if not completely suppressed. This laser system combining the processes of stimulated Raman scattering and optical parametric oscillation for the generation of laser emission at 1742 nm may find significant application across a broad range of fields including biological engineering, laser therapy, optical coherence tomography and for the generation of mid-infrared laser wavelengths.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: In order to enhance clinical improvement of periodontal defects, the addition of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) to open flap debridement (OFD) has been investigated. The aim of this systematic review is to figure out whether such a combination, in comparison to the treatment with OFD alone has some effects on the following outcomes: clinical attachment level gain, probing depth reduction, and gingival recessions increase. METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched for randomized controlled trials in humans addressing the use of a combination of OFD and EMD versus a control group with OFD alone for the treatment of periodontal defects, with a minimum of 6 months of follow-up; meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis were then performed. RESULTS: From a total of 204 records screened by title and abstract, 13 studies were read full-text and eight out of them included in the meta-analysis. Some significant differences have been demonstrated both for clinical attachment level gain and probing depth reduction between test and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: In the treatment of periodontal defects, the addition of EMD to OFD seems to be beneficial in terms of clinical attachment level gain, probing depth reduction, promoting periodontal regeneration. However, such results should be considered with caution because of the small number of studies included in the meta-analysis and their heterogeneity.
