ABSTRACT

Lung parenchyma destruction represents a severe condition commonly found in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Promoting lung regeneration is crucial for achieving clinical improvement. However, no therapeutic drugs are approved to improve the regeneration capacity due to incomplete understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Here, we identify a positive feedback loop formed between adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL)-mediated lipolysis and overexpression of CD36 specific to lung epithelial cells, contributing to disease progression. Genetic deletion of CD36 in lung epithelial cells and pharmacological inhibition of either ATGL or CD36 effectively reduce COPD pathogenesis and promote lung regeneration in mice. Mechanistically, disruption of the ATGL-CD36 loop rescues Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1)-induced cell necroptosis and restores WNT/ß-catenin signaling. Thus, we uncover a crosstalk between lipolysis and lung epithelial cells, suggesting the regenerative potential for therapeutic intervention by targeting the ATGL-CD36-ZBP1 axis in COPD.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the molecular mechanisms through which exercise influences metabolic syndrome (MS) and identify key research trends and collaborative networks using bibliometric and visualization techniques. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search using the Web of Science Core Collection for articles published from 2014 to 2023. Using CiteSpace, we performed a bibliometric analysis of 562 eligible papers, generating visual knowledge maps to identify prevailing patterns, popular subjects, and emerging trends in the literature. Results: The study reveals that exercise mitigates MS by reversing high-fat diet-induced abdominal obesity, reducing lipid accumulation and inflammation, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and improving cardiovascular function. Key molecular pathways include PPAR-γ/CPT-1/MCAD signaling, AMPK activation, and nitric oxide production. The USA leads in research output, with significant contributions from American institutions. Collaboration among researchers is limited, highlighting the need for more extensive and high-quality research initiatives. Conclusions: Regular, moderate-to-high-intensity exercise is crucial for managing MS. Exercise activates beneficial molecular pathways, improving metabolic health and cardiovascular function. Future research should focus on expanding collaborations and exploring novel molecular targets to enhance the therapeutic potential of exercise in metabolic syndrome management.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as nivolumab, combined with small molecule antiangiogenic receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), present a promising strategy for future immunotherapy. However, combination therapy can lead to specific adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in various clinical settings. Current research on the ADRs associated with combination therapy is limited. Our study aims to assess the safety of combination therapy. METHODS: We extracted ADR reports on combination therapy from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System database, covering the period from the first quarter of 2012 to the third quarter of 2023, and conducted a large-scale retrospective study. We evaluated ADR risk signals using the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and calculated the Ro/e ratio to compare the differences in the risk of fatal ADRs among various tumour types. RESULTS: We comprehensively reported the occurrence of ADRs in pan-cancer patients undergoing combination therapy. The combination therapy significantly increased the risk of sensitive skin (ROR: 231.43, 95% CI: 55.01-973.72, P < .05), metastatic renal cell carcinoma (ROR: 220.71, 95% CI: 28.99-1695.41, P < .05) and renal cell carcinoma (ROR: 188.22, 95% CI: 44.24-800.85, P < .05). We also compared the differences in ADRs resulting from different small molecule drug combinations, as well as the differences in ADRs among patients with different types of tumours under combination therapy. Furthermore, we analysed the characteristics of patients prone to experiencing fatal ADRs. CONCLUSION: These results can help enhance understanding of the ADRs commonly associated with combination therapy and assist oncologists in formulating screening protocols.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the treatment of combined wastewater from Hattar Industrial Estate using Biofilm Wetlands (BW) planted with monoculture species: Eichhornia crassipes (EAC), Pistia stratiotes (WL), and Arundo donax (GR). Each species showed distinct capabilities in organic degradation, metal uptake, and pH stabilization. BW2, planted with EAC, achieved the highest total solids (TS) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiencies of 66% and 65%, respectively. GR effectively reduced initial COD concentrations from 232 mg/L to 58.67 mg/L, while EAC and WL reached reductions to 72.78 mg/L and 70.67 mg/L, respectively. Overall, the plant efficiency ranking was EAC > GR > WL. These findings underscore the potential of these plant species in synergistic BW systems, highlighting their role as natural solutions for remediating complex industrial effluents. This research contributes to advancing eco-friendly wastewater treatment approaches, suggesting promising applications for sustainable practices in industrial contexts.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSThis research assessed the effectiveness of phytoremediation using Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Arundo donax for removing pollutants i.e. heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Hg) nitrates, phosphates and sulfates from combined industrial wastewater of Hattar Industrial Estate Pakistan.It highlighted the potential of selected plant species' as natural treatment systems, providing crucial insights into their efficiency.Findings contribute to understanding nature-based solutions for complex industrial effluents.


This study harnessed the potential of three macrophytes to tackle industrial effluents, marking their debut in wastewater treatment. ABSTRACT

This study aimed to design a simple and efficient automatic segmentation model for medical images, so as to facilitate doctors to make more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. A hybrid lightweight network LIT-Unet with symmetric encoder-decoder U-shaped architecture is proposed. Synapse multi-organ segmentation dataset and automated cardiac diagnosis challenge (ACDC) dataset were used to test the segmentation performance of the method. Two indexes, Dice similarity coefficient (DSC ↑) and 95% Hausdorff distance (HD95 ↓), were used to evaluate and compare the segmentation ability with the current advanced methods. Ablation experiments were conducted to demonstrate the lightweight nature and effectiveness of our model. For Synapse dataset, our model achieves a higher DSC score (80.40%), an improvement of 3.8% over the typical hybrid model (TransUnet). The 95 HD value is low at 20.67%. For ACDC dataset, LIT-Unet achieves the optimal average DSC (%) of 91.84 compared with other networks listed. Compared to patch expanding, the DSC of our model is intuitively improved by 1.62% with the help of deformable token merging (DTM). These results show that the proposed hierarchical LIT-Unet can achieve significant accuracy and is expected to provide a reliable basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT

We report the measurement of impulsive stimulated x-ray Raman scattering in neutral liquid water. An attosecond pulse drives the excitations of an electronic wavepacket in water molecules. The process comprises two steps: a transition to core-excited states near the oxygen atoms accompanied by transition to valence-excited states. Thus, the wavepacket is impulsively created at a specific atomic site within a few hundred attoseconds through a nonlinear interaction between the water and the x-ray pulse. We observe this nonlinear signature in an intensity-dependent Stokes Raman sideband at 526 eV. Our measurements are supported by our state-of-the-art calculations based on the polarization response of water dimers in bulk solvation and propagation of attosecond x-ray pulses at liquid density.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of cervical cancer has been increasing recently, becoming an essential factor threatening patients' health. Positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT) and positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) are multimodal molecular imaging methods that combine functional imaging (PET) and anatomical imaging (CT) with MRI fusion technology. They play an important role in the clinical management of patients with cervical cancer. Precision radiotherapy refers to the use of advanced intensive modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to give different doses of radiation to different treatment areas to achieve the purpose of killing tumors and protecting normal tissues to the greatest extent. At present, pelvic target delineation is mostly based on CT and MRI, but these mostly provide anatomical morphological information, which is difficult to show the internal metabolism of tumors. PET/CT and PET/MRI combine information on biological function, metabolism and anatomical structure, thereby more accurately distinguishing the boundaries between tumor and non-tumor tissues and playing a positive guiding role in improving radiotherapy planning (RTP) for cervical cancer and evaluating treatment effect.

The wound microenvironment, often characterized by alkaline pH and severe hypoxia, presents significant challenges to the healing of bacterial-infected wounds. While considerable research has focused on improving wound healing through effective bacterial elimination using advanced therapeutic approaches, the importance of regulating the wound microenvironment has received less emphasis. In this work, we developed a biocompatible hydrogel, HTFC, by incorporating CaO2 nanoparticles (CaO2 NPs) into a gel formed by tannic acid (TA), hyaluronic acid (HA), and Fe3+. The HA and TA in HTFC hydrogel help to create a slightly acidic microenvironment, facilitating the decomposition of CaO2 NPs to release H2O2 for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The reduction properties of TA promote the recycling of Fe3+/Fe2+, enhancing CDT efficacy and partially converting H2O2 to O2, thereby alleviating hypoxia. Additionally, FeIIITA complexes in HTFC enhance CDT through photothermal therapy (PTT)-induced improvement of the Fenton reaction. This multifunctional hydrogel, with its synergistic effects of PTT and CDT, along with its ability to remodel the wound microenvironment from hypoxic and alkaline to normoxic and acidic, accelerates the bacterial-infected wound healing process.

After the remission of psychotic symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia, a persistently high rate of disability suggests potential influences from socio-ecological factors. This study aimed to explore the complex relationships between socioecological factors, including sleep quality, psychological resilience, family resilience, and social support, and the severity of psychiatric disability in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Employing a cross-sectional design, the study involved 188 individuals with chronic schizophrenia. Disability was measured using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHO-DAS 2.0), while social support, family resilience, psychological resilience, and sleep quality were assessed using the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Family Hardiness Index (FHI), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. LASSO regression and structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were conducted to identify predictive factors and their interrelationships. The mean WHO-DAS 2.0 score of 72.91 ± 14.04 indicated substantial difficulties in daily activities, necessitating comprehensive support among participants. LASSO regression identified frequent disease relapses, low education levels, and poor sleep quality as risk factors for disability, whereas strong social support, family resilience, and individual resilience emerged as protective factors against disability. SEM demonstrated that the enhancement of family and individual resilience by social support contributes to the mitigation of disability. The study underscores the critical roles of social support, family resilience, and individual psychological resilience in reducing disability in patients with chronic schizophrenia, suggesting that interventions targeting these factors may improve rehabilitation outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity can regulate and affect gene expression in multiple tissues and cells. Recently, with the development of next-generation sequencing, a large number of RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq)-based gene expression profiles about physical activity have been shared in public resources; however, they are poorly curated and underutilized. To tackle this problem, we developed a data atlas of such data through comprehensive data collection, curation, and organization. METHODS: The data atlas, termed gene expression profiles of RNA-seq-based exercise responses (GEPREP), was built on a comprehensive collection of high-quality RNA-seq data on exercise responses. The metadata of each sample were manually curated. Data were uniformly processed and batch effects corrected. All the information was well organized in an easy-to-use website for free search, visualization, and download. RESULTS: GEPREP now includes 69 RNA-seq datasets of pre- and post-exercise, comprising 26 human datasets (1120 samples) and 43 mouse datasets (1006 samples). Specifically, there were 977 (87.2%) human samples of skeletal muscle and 143 (12.8%) human samples of blood. There were also samples across 9 mice tissues with skeletal muscle (359, 35.7%) and brain (280, 27.8%) accounting for the main fractions. Metadata-including subject, exercise interventions, sampling sites, and post-processing methods-are also included. The metadata and gene expression profiles are freely accessible at http://www.geprep.org.cn/. CONCLUSION: GEPREP is a comprehensive data atlas of RNA-seq-based gene expression profiles responding to exercise. With its reliable annotations and user-friendly interfaces, it has the potential to deepen our understanding of exercise physiology.

BACKGROUND: Glucose fluctuations may be involved in the pathophysiological process of cardiomyocyte apoptosis, but the exact mechanism remains elusive. This study focused on exploring the mechanisms related to glucose fluctuation-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. METHODS: Diabetic rats established via an injection of streptozotocin were randomized to five groups: the controlled diabetic (CD) group, the uncontrolled diabetic (UD) group, the glucose fluctuated diabetic (GFD) group, the GFD group rats with the injection of 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) (GFD + NaCl) and the GFD group rats with the injection of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) (GFD + NAC). Twelve weeks later, cardiac function and apoptosis related protein expressions were tested. Proteomic analysis was performed to further analyze the differential protein expression pattern of CD and GFD. RESULTS: The left ventricular ejection fraction levels and fractional shortening levels were decreased in the GFD group, compared with those in the CD and UD groups. Positive cells tested by DAB-TUNEL were increased in the GFD group, compared with those in the CD group. The expression of Bcl-2 was decreased, but the expressions of Bax, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-9 were increased in response to glucose fluctuations. Compared with CD, there were 527 upregulated and 152 downregulated proteins in GFD group. Txnip was one of the differentially expressed proteins related to oxidative stress response. The Txnip expression was increased in the GFD group, while the Akt phosphorylation level was decreased. The interaction between Txnip and Akt was enhanced when blood glucose fluctuated. Moreover, the application of NAC partially reversed glucose fluctuations-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: Glucose fluctuations lead to cardiomyocyte apoptosis by up-regulating Txnip expression and enhancing Txnip-Akt interaction.

Studies on niche and interspecific association can reveal plant interspecific relationship in the community, and provide theoretical support for promoting the transformation and development of plantation to natural forest. Based on Cunninghamia lanceolata investigation data of permanent plots of plantation in Jianfengling area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, we analyzed niche and interspecific association of the top 20 woody species in the community according to their importance values. The results showed that there were 163 species of woody species belonging to 101 genera and 55 families in the C. lanceolata plantation community, with complex species composition. As a constructive species, C. lanceolata had the highest importance value and niche breadth, and thus was the absolute dominant species in the community. It had a large niche overlap and niche similarity with many other species, among which the highest was observed in Adinandra hainanensis. The average niche overlap and niche similarity of the community were 0.54 and 0.49, respectively. The change trends of those two niche indicators were basically the same, indicating that some species were similar in resource demands. The overall association of main woody species was significantly positive. The χ2 test, association coefficient, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Spearman rank correlation coefficient suggested that the amounts of pairs with positive association were more than that with negative ones. The proportion of significant association species pairs was relatively low, indicating that the community stability was strong, species could coexist stably, and most species did not form close ties. On the whole, C. lanceolata had inhibited the regeneration of original tree species, and A. hainanensis, Garcinia oblongifolia, and Heptapleurum heptaphyllum could be used in natural transformation and restoration of C. lanceolata plantation in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

ABSTRACT

Heart failure is a prevalent and life-threatening syndrome characterized by structural and/or functional abnormalities of the heart. As a global burden with high rates of morbidity and mortality, there is growing recognition of the beneficial effects of exercise on physical fitness and cardiovascular health. A substantial body of evidence supports the notion that exercise can play a protective role in the development and progression of heart failure and improve cardiac function through various mechanisms, such as attenuating cardiac fibrosis, reducing inflammation, and regulating mitochondrial metabolism. Further investigation into the role and underlying mechanisms of exercise in heart failure may uncover novel therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of heart failure.

ABSTRACT

Dinoflagellate requires a lower temperature and blooms frequently in the spring and autumn compared to regular cyanobacteria. The outbreak of dinoflagellate bloom will also lead to the death of some aquatic organisms. However, research on freshwater dinoflagellates is still lacking due to the challenges posed by classification and culture in laboratory. The removal effect and mechanism of Peridinium umbonatum (P. umbonatum, a typical dinoflagellate) were investigated using solar/chlorine in this study. The effect of simulated solar alone on the removal of algae was negligible, and chlorine alone had only a slight effect in removing algae. However, solar/chlorine showed a better removal efficiency with shoulder length reduction factor and kmax enhancement factor of 2.80 and 3.8, respectively, indicating a shorter latency period and faster inactivation rate for solar/chlorine compared to solar and chlorine alone. The removal efficiency of algae gradually increased with the chlorine dosage, but it dropped as the cell density grew. When the experimental temperature was raised to 30 °C, algal removal efficiency significantly increased, as the temperature was unsuitable for the survival of P. umbonatum. Attacks on cell membranes by chlorine and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) produced by solar/chlorine led to a decrease in cell membrane integrity, leading to a rise in intracellular reactive oxygen species and an inhibition of photosynthetic and antioxidant systems. Cell regeneration was not observed in either the chlorine or solar/chlorine systems due to severe cell damage or cysts formation. In addition, natural solar radiation was demonstrated to have the same enhancing effect as simulated solar radiation. However, the algal removal efficiency of solar/chlorine in real water was reduced compared to 119 medium, mainly due to background material in the real water substrate that consumed the oxidant or acted as shading agents.

Both the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) valine (Val)/methionine (Met) polymorphism and mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude are reportedly linked to working memory impairments in schizophrenia. However, there is evident scarcity of research aimed at exploring the relationships among the three factors. In this secondary analysis of a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial, we investigated these relationships. The trial assessed the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation for enhancing working memory in clinically stable schizophrenia patients, who were randomly divided into three groups: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex stimulation, posterior parietal cortex stimulation, and sham stimulation groups. Transcranial direct current stimulation was administered concurrently with a working memory task over five days. We assessed the BDNF genotype, MMN amplitude, working memory capacity, and interference control subdomains. These assessments were conducted at baseline with 54 patients and followed up post-intervention with 48 patients. Compared to BDNF Met-carriers, Val homozygotes exhibited fewer positive and general symptoms and increased working memory capacity at baseline. A correlation between MMN amplitude and working memory capacity was noted only in BDNF Val homozygotes. The correlations were significantly different in the two BDNF genotype groups. Furthermore, in the intervention group that showed significant improvement in MMN amplitude, BDNF Val homozygotes exhibited greater enhancement in working memory capacity than Met-carriers. This study provides in vivo evidence for the interaction between MMN and BDNF Val/Met polymorphism for working memory capacity. As MMN has been considered a biomarker of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) function, these data shed light on the complex interactions between BDNF and NMDAR in terms of working memory in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a progressive and severe respiratory disease for which there is still a lack of satisfactory treatment methods other than lung transplantation. Evening primrose (EP) is widely used in Chinese folk medicinal herbs, especially for the treatment of lung-related diseases. However, the protective effect of evening primrose against PF has yet to be reported. PURPOSE: This study explores the pharmacological effect of EP and its possible active components against PF from the perspectives of lung function, histopathological staining, and molecular biology assays. METHODS: Establishing a rat pulmonary fibrosis model using bleomycin to detect lung function, pathological changes, and collagen deposition. TGF-ß1 was used to establish an in vitro model of PF in BEAS-2B cells, and the active ingredients in evening primrose were screened. Then, the therapeutic effects of 1-Oxohederagenin (C1) and remangilone C (C2) derived from EP were observed in an in vivo model of bleomycin-induced PF, and the differentially expressed genes between the C1 and C2 treatment groups and the model group were screened with transcriptome sequencing. Finally, TGF-ß1-induced damage to HFL1 cell was used to explore the specific mechanisms by which C1 and C2 alleviate PF and the involvement of ß-catenin signaling. RESULTS: Evening primrose extract showed some ameliorative effects on bleomycin-induced PF in rats, manifested as reduced pathological damage and reduced collagen deposition. The chemical components of C1 and C2 potently ameliorated BLM-induced PF in animals and effectively inhibited fibroblast activation by interfering with ß-catenin signaling. CONCLUSION: Evening primrose extract has certain ameliorative effects on PF. In addation, C1 and C2 might be related with the suppression of fibroblast activation by inhibiting ß-catenin signaling.

ABSTRACT

Ram sperm undergo a sequence of physiological and biochemical changes collectively termed as capacitation to perform oocyte fertilization. However, the protein changes induced by capacitation remain in need of further exploration. Thus, the present study investigated the comparative proteomic profiling in ram spermatozoa under non-capacitating (NC) and capacitating (CAP) conditions in vitro using a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with tandem mass tag labeling strategy. As a results, 2050 proteins were identified and quantified; 348 of them were differentially abundant, with 280 of the proteins upregulated and 68 of the proteins downregulated between the CAP and NC spermatozoa, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that the differentially abundant proteins Prune Exopolyphosphatase 1, Galactose-1-Phosphate Uridylyltransferase, and ATP Citrate Lyase were strictly related to energy production and conversion, and Phosphoglycolate phosphatase, Glucosamine-6-Phosphate Deaminase 1 and 2 were related to metabolism, RNA processing, and vesicular transport pathways. Furthermore, the networks of protein-protein interaction indicated a strong interaction among these differential proteins in annotated pathways such as ubiquitin and transport metabolism. Our findings indicate that capacitation progress might be regulated through different pathways, providing insights into mechanisms involved in ram sperm capacitation and fertility.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the role of M2-exo-mediated HOXC13-AS in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) by examining its transmission to tumor microenvironment (TME) macrophages. Exosomes from M2 macrophages were isolated and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracer analysis and western blot. Expression of HOXC13-AS, miR-485-5p, IGF2BP2, and PD-L1 was analyzed. Different interventions on LSCC cell function and immune escape were detected using molecular biological techniques. The study found that elevated HOXC13-AS were present in LSCC, and M2-exo expression was significantly increased in LSCC cells. Silencing HOXC13-AS in M2-exo inhibited LSCC malignant progression and immune escape in vivo and in vitro. M2-exo-mediated HOXC13-AS also regulated IGF2BP2 expression, impacting cellular biological function and immune escape process. The study concludes that M2-exo-mediated HOXC13-AS promotes LSCC malignancy and immune escape.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial fold (NLF) depression can affect the facial appearance of patients to some extent and increase their psychological burdens. In recent years, autologous fat grafting (AFG) combined with botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection (AFG + BTX-A injection) has been gradually applied in the treatment of patients with NLF depression. Although studies have been conducted on the efficacy and safety of AFG + BTX-A injection in treating NLF depression, the experimental design, observational indicators, and sample enrollment criteria vary remarkably, making it difficult to draw convincing and consistent conclusions. Thus, further relevant research is warranted. AIM: To assess the esthetic improvement, efficacy, and safety of AFG + BTX-A injections in patients with NLF depression. METHODS: This study included 60 patients with NLF depression who were treated in our hospital from February 2019 to April 2021. These patients were categorized into control (n = 30) and observation (n = 30) groups. The observation group received AFG + BTX-A injection, whereas the control group underwent AFG only. All patients were evaluated using the wrinkle severity rating scale (WSRS) and global aesthetic improvement scale. The compactness of facial contours, skin evaluation indexes, adverse reactions, and satisfaction of the two groups were evaluated 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The WSRS scores of the observation group at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Three months postoperatively, facial fine lines and pores showed obvious improvement and the skin index score was higher in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The compactness of facial contours was better in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). In addition, no remarkable differences were noted in the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions such as facial stiffness, facial asymmetry, facial bruising, and facial concavity inequality (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: AFG + BTX-A injection is a highly safe, cost-effective, effective, and long-lasting treatment for NLF depression with high esthetic value, which should be promoted in the future.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common musculoskeletal injury associated with static balance deficits. The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is commonly used to assess static balance in individuals with CAI. However, the sensitivity of BESS in detecting balance deficits in CAI is unknown. This study compared BESS performance between people with CAI and controls and investigated which stances most effectively identified balance deficits in individuals with CAI. LITERATURE SURVEY: Seven electronic databases (Web of Science, CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane Library) were searched from July 13, 2023, to September 10, 2023, using the ankle instability and balance related terms as keywords to search original studies and perform a systematic review. METHODS: Studies that compared BESS scores between individuals with CAI and healthy controls were systematically identified. Extracted data included study characteristics, participant demographics, and assessment details. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used as effect sizes to compare groups for the BESS components used to assess CAI. RESULTS: Six studies met the eligibility criteria. The double-leg foam stance yielded an SMD of -0.02 (95% CI: -0.32 to 0.29), with an I2 value of 3.5%. Significant differences between groups were noted in the single foam (SMD = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.33-1.45; I2 = 78.3%) and single firm (SMD = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.14-1.10; I2 = 72.1%) performances, although both demonstrated high heterogeneity. Conversely, the tandem foam (SMD = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.51-1.02; I2 = 0.0%) and tandem firm (SMD = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.11-0.68; I2 = 23.8%) performances showed small to moderate between-group differences with considerably lower heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: This review indicates that tandem stances on foam and firm surfaces in the BESS are reliable indicators of static balance deficits in individuals with CAI.
