ABSTRACT

Traditional fermented foods are known to offer cardiovascular health benefits. However, the potential of fermented Chinese chives (FCC) in reducing coronary heart disease (CHD) remains unclear. This study employed anaerobic fermentation to investigate Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) P470 from FCC. The results indicated that L. plantarum P470 enhanced hydroxyl radical scavenging and exhibited anti-inflammatory effects on RAW264.7 macrophages in the fecal fermentation supernatant of CHD patients. These effects were attributed to the modulation of gut microbiota and metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Specifically, L. plantarum P470 increased the abundance of Bacteroides and Lactobacillus while decreasing Escherichia-Shigella, Enterobacter, Veillonella, Eggerthella, and Helicobacter in CHD patient fecal samples. Furthermore, L. plantarum P470 regulated the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and linoleic acid metabolism. These findings suggest that L. plantarum P470 from FCC can improve the fecal physiological status in patients with CHD by modulating intestinal microbiota, promoting SCFA production, and regulating lipid metabolism.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) outbreaks of invasive diseases are increasing. Whether the genetic diversity of invasive NTS correlates with the clinical characteristics and bacteremia development in NTS infections remains unclear. In this study, we compared the global transcriptomes between bacteremic and nonbacteremic NTS strains after their interaction with human intestinal epithelial cells in vitro. METHODS: We selected clinical isolates obtained from stool and blood samples of patients with or without bacteremia and patients with high and low C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The bacterial RNA samples were isolated after coculturing with Caco-2 cells for RNA sequencing and subsequent analyses. RESULTS: CRP is an unreliable predictive maker for NTS bacteremia with a median CRP level of 1.6 mg/dL. Certain Salmonella Pathogenicity Island (SPI)-1 genes (sipC, sipA, sicA, sipD, and sipB), SPI-2 genes (ssaP, ssrA, and ssaS), and six SPI-4 genes (siiA, siiB, siiC, siiD, siiE, and siiF) remained upregulated in the bacteremic blood-derived strains but significantly downregulated in the nonbacteremic strains after their interaction with Caco-2 cells. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways analysis identified that arginine biosynthesis, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, and phosphotransferase system pathways were activated in bacteremic NTS strains after Caco-2 cell priming. CONCLUSION: CRP levels were not correlated with bacteremia development. Significant regulation of certain SPI genes in bacteremic NTS strains after Caco-2 cell priming; bacteremia development might be influenced by the host immune response and the extent to which specific metabolism pathways in NTS strains can be prevented from invading the bloodstream.

OBJECTIVE: Pancreatic cancer is an incurable malignant disease with extremely poor prognosis and a complex tumor microenvironment. We sought to characterize the role of Annexin A1 (ANXA1) in pancreatic cancer, including its ability to promote efferocytosis and antitumor immune responses. METHODS: The tumor expression of ANXA1 and cleaved Caspase-3 (c-Casp3) and numbers of tumor-infiltrating CD68+ macrophages in 151 cases of pancreatic cancer were examined by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. The role of ANXA1 in pancreatic cancer was investigated using myeloid-specific ANXA1-knockout mice. The changes in tumor-infiltrating immune cell populations induced by ANXA1 deficiency in macrophages were assessed by single-cell RNA sequencing and flow cytometry. RESULTS: ANXA1 expression in pancreatic cancer patient samples correlated with the number of CD68+ macrophages. The percentage of ANXA1+ tumor-infiltrating macrophages negatively correlated with c-Casp3 expression and was significantly associated with worse survival. In mice, myeloid-specific ANXA1 deficiency inhibited tumor growth and was accompanied by the accumulation of apoptotic cells in pancreatic tumor tissue caused by inhibition of macrophage efferocytosis, which was dependent on cGAS-STING pathway-induced type I interferon signaling. ANXA1 deficiency significantly remodeled the intratumoral lymphocyte and macrophage compartments in tumor-bearing mice by increasing the number of effector T cells and pro-inflammatory macrophages. Furthermore, combination therapy of ANXA1 knockdown with gemcitabine and anti-programmed cell death protein-1 antibody resulted in synergistic inhibition of pancreatic tumor growth. CONCLUSION: This research uncovers a novel role of macrophage ANXA1 in pancreatic cancer. ANXA1-mediated regulation of efferocytosis by tumor-associated macrophages promotes antitumor immune response via STING signaling, suggesting potential treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer.

ABSTRACT

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the main probiotics currently available in the markets and are essential for maintaining gut health. To guarantee probiotic function, it is imperative to boost the culture yield of probiotic organisms, ensure the sufficient viable cells in commercial products, or develop effective prebiotics. Recent studies have shown that protein hydrolysates and their derived peptides promote the proliferation of probiotic in vitro and the abundance of gut flora. This article comprehensively reviews different sources of protein hydrolysates and their derived peptides as growth-promoting factors for probiotics including Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces. We also provide a preliminary analysis of the characteristics of LAB proteolytic systems focusing on the correlation between their elements and growth-promoting activities. The structure-activity relationship and underlying mechanisms of growth-promoting peptides and their research perspectives are thoroughly discussed. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into growth-promoting protein hydrolysates and their derived peptides for proliferating probiotics in vivo or in vitro, which may inspire researchers to explore new options for industrial probiotics proliferation, dairy products fermentation, and novel prebiotics development in the future.

OBJECTIVE: A person's marital satisfaction is a strong predictor of their own mental health outcomes. However, marital satisfaction results from both spouses' experiences, so a partner's marital satisfaction also affects his or her mental health outcomes. This study adopted the actor-partner interdependence model approach (APIM) to evaluate the relationship between marital satisfaction and sense of defeat in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) couples. METHODS AND MEASURES: In this cross-sectional study, 181 infertile couples undergoing IVF-ET treatment were recruited using the Marital Satisfaction Scale of the ENRICH Marital Quality Questionnaire and Defeat Scale. Through APIM and Pearson analysis, the path relationship between marital satisfaction and defeat was analyzed. RESULTS: The varying degrees of defeat in IVF-ET couples, are closely related to actors' and partners' marital satisfaction. In terms of actor effects, the Marital Satisfaction of both husbands (ß = -0.71, p < 0.001) and wives (ß = -0.46, p = 0.001) have a significant effect on individual Defeat. With regard to partner effects, husbands' Marital Satisfaction (ß = -0.23, p = 0.038) has a significant impact on wives' Defeat and the wives' Marital Satisfaction (ß = -0.45, p = -0.005) has a significant impact on husbands' Defeat. CONCLUSION: IVF-ET couples must be looked at as a whole, and it is critical to include couples and not just men or women when studying infertility. The importance of their interaction is essential to improve the psychosocial adaptation of infertile couples in IVF-ET treatment.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology and molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia (SCZ) remain unclear, and the effective treatment resources are still limited. The goal of this study is to identify the expression of AQP4 in SCZ patients and explore whether AQP4 inhibition could ameliorate schizophrenia-like behaviors and its mechanisms. METHODS: Microarray datasets of PFC compared with healthy control were searched in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed with the GEO2R online tool. The Venny online tool and metascape online software were used to identify common abnormally expressed genes and conduct cell type signature enrichment analysis. SCZ mouse models were induced with MK-801, an NMDA receptor antagonist (intraperitoneal injection, 0.1 mg/kg/day for 7 days), and C6 cell models were treated with 100 µM MK-801. RT-qPCR, Western Blotting, and immunofluorescence were employed to determine the expression of AQP4, proinflammatory cytokines, and GFAP. Open field tests and social interaction tests were performed to evaluate the schizophrenia-like behaviors. RESULTS: Bioinformatics analysis identified upregulation of AQP4 in the PFC of SCZ patients compared with healthy controls. Cell type signature enrichment analysis showed that all three DEGs lists were strongly enriched in the FAN EMBRYONIC CTX ASTROCYTE 2 category. Upregulation of AQP4 was also observed in MK-801-treated C6 cells and the PFC of MK-801-induced SCZ mouse model. Moreover, AQP4 inhibition with TGN-020 (an inhibitor of AQP4) improved anxiety-like behavior and social novelty preference defects in MK-801-treated mice. AQP4 inhibition also reduced the expression of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α in MK-801-treated C6 cells and mouse model. CONCLUSIONS: AQP4 is upregulated in the PFC of SCZ patients compared with healthy controls. AQP4 inhibition could alleviate the anxiety-like behavior and social novelty defects in MK-801-treated mice, this may be due to the role of AQP4 in the regulation of the expression of proinflammatory cytokines.

ABSTRACT

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are persistent and pervasive compounds that pose serious risks. Numerous studies have explored the effects of EDCs on human health, among which tumors have been the primary focus. However, because of study design flaws, lack of effective exposure levels of EDCs, and inconsistent population data and findings, it is challenging to draw clear conclusions on the effect of these compounds on tumor-related outcomes. Our study is the first to systematically integrate observational studies and randomized controlled trials from over 20 years and summarize over 300 subgroup associations. We found that most EDCs promote tumor development, and that exposure to residential environmental pollutants may be a major source of pesticide exposure. Furthermore, we found that phytoestrogens exhibit antitumor effects. The findings of this study can aid in the development of global EDCs regulatory health policies and alleviate the severe risks associated with EDCs exposure.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the status of academic support perception among nursing interns and explore the correlation between academic support perception, emotional intelligence, and bullying behaviors in nursing education, especially the moderating role of bullying behavior on the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic support perception. BACKGROUND: Academic support perception is closely related to the nursing interns' mental health and academic performance. To some extent, it can reflect nursing interns' satisfaction and happiness during their internship, affecting their motivation to continue their studies. However, little is known about the nursing interns' academic support perception in China. METHODS: A total of 1020 nursing interns participated in this study. A sociodemographic information questionnaire, Bullying Behaviors in Nursing Education Scale, Wong and Law's Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Academic Support in the Practicum Scale were used to collect data. FINDINGS: Bullying behaviors and emotional intelligence were significantly associated with nursing interns' academic support perception. In addition, bullying behaviors in nursing education moderated the association between emotional intelligence and academic support perception. DISCUSSION: Nursing interns who possess high emotional intelligence and experience less bullying in nursing education tend to perceive higher academic support in clinical practice. The positive effects of emotional intelligence on nursing interns' academic support perceptions are contingent on the level of bullying behavior experienced in nursing education. Less bullying behaviors in nursing education enhance the impact of emotional intelligence on academic support perception. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Strategies should be created to promote emotional intelligence and decrease bullying behaviors in nursing education to improve the perception of academic support among nursing interns.

ABSTRACT

The Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell is an epithelial-like cell that produces proteins with post-translational modifications similar to human glycosylation. It is widely used in the production of recombinant therapeutic proteins and monoclonal antibodies. Culturing CHO cells typically requires the addition of a certain proportion of fetal bovine serum (FBS) to maintain cell proliferation and passaging. However, serum is characterized by its complex composition, batch-to-batch variability, high cost, and potential risk of exogenous contaminants such as mycoplasma and viruses, which impact the purity and safety of the synthesized proteins. Therefore, search for serum alternatives and development of serum-free media for CHO-based protein biomanufacturing are of great significance. This review systematically summarizes the application advantages of CHO cells and strategies for high-density expression. It highlights the developmental trends of serum substitutes from human platelet lysates to animal-free extracts and microbial-derived substances and elucidates the mechanisms by which these substitutes enhance CHO cell culture performance and recombinant protein production, aiming to provide theoretical guidance for exploring novel serum alternatives and developing serum-free media for CHO cells.

Background: Shame-proneness, particularly in adolescence, is a critical psychological construct linked to aggressive behavior. This study addresses the gap in understanding the specific mechanisms of this relationship within the cultural context of Chinese adolescents. Aim: The study aims to explore the mediating roles of hostility and externalization of blame in the connection between shame-proneness and aggression among Chinese adolescents. Methods: A comprehensive sample of 1489 Chinese adolescents participated in the study. They completed the Test of Self-Conscious Affect for Adolescents to assess shame-proneness and an aggression questionnaire to measure aggressive behaviors. The study utilized network analysis and mediational analysis, to unravel the complex interactions between shame-proneness, externalization of blame, hostility, anger, and aggression. Results: The results identified two distinct pathways linking shame-proneness to aggression: one mediated by hostility and the other by externalization of blame. The pathway via hostility was particularly pronounced, marking it as a central node in the shame-aggression relationship. Interestingly, the study also revealed a direct, though less pronounced, inhibitory effect of shame-proneness on aggression, indicating a dualistic role of shame in adolescent behavior. These findings were consistent across different demographic subgroups, suggesting a generalizable pattern in the studied population. Conclusion: The dual nature of shame-proneness, as both an inhibitor and a facilitator of aggression, underscores the need for culturally sensitive approaches in psychological interventions and future research. The central role of hostility in this relationship points to potential targets for therapeutic interventions aimed at mitigating aggression in adolescents.

Childhood trauma and alexithymia are significant risk factors for adolescent mental health issues. Prior research has linked these factors to psychopathology, but the complexities of their interrelation remain underexplored. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between various forms of childhood trauma and alexithymia in adolescents with depressive and bipolar disorders. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and network analysis were utilized on data from 2343 Chinese adolescents (aged 12-18 years, 77.93% female) diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. Measures included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). SEM demonstrated a significant correlation between childhood trauma and alexithymia. Network analysis identified emotional abuse and difficulty identifying feelings as central nodes. Emotional abuse emerged as a key factor for difficulty in emotional identification among adolescents. This study highlights the need for early intervention and the importance of emotional nurturing in childhood to prevent long-term socioemotional difficulties.

Cathepsin L (CTSL) has been implicated in aging and age-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, specifically atherosclerosis. However, the underlying mechanism(s) is not well documented. Recently, we demonstrated a role of CUT-like homeobox 1 (CUX1) in regulating the p16INK4a-dependent cellular senescence in human endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) via its binding to an atherosclerosis-associated functional SNP (fSNP) rs1537371 on the CDKN2A/B locus. In this study, to determine if CTSL, which was reported to proteolytically activate CUX1, regulates cellular senescence via CUX1, we measured the expression of CTSL, together with CUX1 and p16INK4a, in human ECs and VSMCs undergoing senescence. We discovered that CUX1 is not a substrate that is cleaved by CTSL. Instead, CTSL is an upstream regulator that activates CUX1 transcription indirectly in a process that requires the proteolytic activity of CTSL. Our findings suggest that there is a transcription factor in between CTSL and CUX1, and cleavage of this factor by CTSL can activate CUX1 transcription, inducing endothelial senescence. Thus, our findings provide new insights into the signal transduction pathway that leads to atherosclerosis-associated cellular senescence.

Background: Investigating the effects of monetary incentives on dishonest behavior provides valuable insights into human integrity and ethical decision-making processes. This study is conducted through the lens of self-concept maintenance theory. Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the influence of different types of rewards (score-based vs. monetary) and their magnitude on dishonest behavior within a gender judgment task. Method: Using a quantitative experimental design, this study involved 116 participants who were randomly assigned to conditions that differed in reward type (score or money) and magnitude (10 yuan vs. 50 yuan). Dishonest behavior was assessed using a gender judgment task with mechanisms to simulate conditions conducive to planned cheating. Results: Results revealed significant differences in dishonesty rates between score and money conditions, with a higher proportion of dishonest participants observed in the score condition compared to the money condition. The timing of initial cheating was earlier in the score condition compared to the money condition. No significant differences were found in the proportion of dishonest participants, the cheating rate, or the timing of initial cheating across reward levels within either condition. The rate of cheating increased over time, suggesting a temporal dynamic in unethical decision making. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that the nature of rewards significantly influences the likelihood of dishonest behavior, with intangible score-based rewards facilitating rationalizations for dishonesty more readily than tangible financial incentives. These findings enrich the understanding of moral psychology by highlighting the complex interplay between reward types, ethical rationalization, and the dynamics of dishonest behavior.

Despite the long-standing availability of effective prophylaxis, chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a formidable public health threat. Antiviral treatments can limit viral propagation, but prolonged therapy is necessary to control HBV replication. Robust in vitro models of HBV infection are indispensable prerequisites for elucidating viral pathogenesis, delineating virus-host interplay and developing novel therapeutic, preventative countermeasures. Buoyed by advances in molecular techniques and tissue culture systems, investigators have engineered numerous in vitro models of the HBV life cycle. However, all current platforms harbor limitations in the recapitulation of natural infection. In this article, we comprehensively review the HBV life cycle, provide an overview of existing in vitro HBV infection and replication systems, and succinctly present the benefits and caveats in each model with the primary objective of constructing refined experimental models that closely mimic native viral infection and offering robust support for the ambitious "elimination of hepatitis by 2030" initiative.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) is increasingly prevalent among adolescents, often arising from depression and linked with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Previous studies have noted significant sex differences in the manifestation and predictors of SI, depression, and NSSI. AIM: This study aims to analyze and compare the relationships between SI, depression, and NSSI among male and female adolescents, examining whether these associations differ based on sex. METHODS: A total of 368 adolescents (M = 15.43, SD = 1.22, about 56.2% female participants), both from clinical and school settings, were assessed for SI, depression, NSSI, and other related variables. Network analysis was utilized to explore the interconnections among these variables, focusing on identifying sex-specific patterns. Logistic regression was used to confirm the findings from the network analysis. RESULTS: The network analysis revealed significant sex differences in the relationships between SI, depression, and NSSI. In the female network, the edge weights between SI and NSSI (0.93) and between SI and depression (0.31) were much higher compared to the male network (0.29 and 0, respectively). Centrality indices (strength, betweenness, closeness, and expected influence) for SI, NSSI, and depression were also higher in the female network. Logistic regression confirmed these findings, with depression being a potential predictor of SI only in females (OR = 1.349, p = 0.001) and NSSI having a stronger influence on SI in females (OR = 13.673, p < 0.001) than in males (OR = 2.752, p = 0.037). CONCLUSION: The findings underscore the necessity of considering sex differences when predicting suicidal ideation from depression and NSSI in adolescents. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has revolutionized the field of dentistry, enabling the precise fabrication of dental implants. By utilizing 3D printing, dentists can devise implant plans prior to surgery and accurately translate them into clinical procedures, thereby eliminating the need for multiple surgical procedures, reducing surgical discomfort, and enhancing surgical efficiency. Furthermore, the utilization of digital 3D-printed implant guides facilitates immediate restoration by precisely translating preoperative implant design plans, enabling the preparation of temporary restorations preoperatively. METHODS: This comprehensive study aimed to assess the postoperative oral health status of patients receiving personalized 3D-printed implants and investigate the advantages and disadvantages between the 3D-printed implant and conventional protocol. Additionally, variance analysis was employed to delve into the correlation between periodontal status and overall oral health. Comparisons of continuous paired parameters were made by t-test. RESULTS: The results of our study indicate a commendable one-year survival rate of over 94% for 3D-printed implants. This finding was corroborated by periodontal examinations and follow-up surveys using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, revealing excellent postoperative oral health status among patients. Notably, OHIP-14 scores were significantly higher in patients with suboptimal periodontal health, suggesting a strong link between periodontal health and overall oral well-being. Moreover, we found that the operating time (14.41 ± 4.64 min) was less statistically significant than for the control group (31.76 ± 6.83 min). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, personalized 3D-printed implant surgery has emerged as a reliable clinical option, offering a viable alternative to traditional implant methods. However, it is imperative to gather further evidence-based medical support through extended follow-up studies to validate its long-term efficacy and safety.

ABSTRACT

The striatum is required for normal action selection, movement, and sensorimotor learning. Although action-specific striatal ensembles have been well documented, it is not well understood how these ensembles are formed and how their dynamics may evolve throughout motor learning. Here we used longitudinal 2-photon Ca2+ imaging of dorsal striatal neurons in head-fixed mice as they learned to self-generate locomotion. We observed a significant activation of both direct- and indirect-pathway spiny projection neurons (dSPNs and iSPNs, respectively) during early locomotion bouts and sessions that gradually decreased over time. For dSPNs, onset- and offset-ensembles were gradually refined from active motion-nonspecific cells. iSPN ensembles emerged from neurons initially active during opponent actions before becoming onset- or offset-specific. Our results show that as striatal ensembles are progressively refined, the number of active nonspecific striatal neurons decrease and the overall efficiency of the striatum information encoding for learned actions increases.

ABSTRACT

Zr-50Ti alloys are promising biomaterials due to their excellent mechanical properties and low magnetic susceptibility. However, Zr-50Ti alloys do not inherently bond well with bone. This study aims to enhance the bioactivity and bonding strength of Zr-50Ti alloys for orthopedic implant materials. Initially, the surface of Zr-50Ti alloys was treated with a sulfuric acid solution to create a microporous structure, increasing surface roughness and area. Subsequently, low crystalline calcium phosphate (L-CaP) precipitation was controlled by adding Mg2+ and/or CO32- ions in modified simulated body fluid (m-SBF). The treated Zr-50Ti alloys were then subjected to cold isostatic pressing to force m-SBF into the micropores, followed by incubation to allow L-CaP formation. The apatite-forming process was tested in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results demonstrated that the incorporation of Mg2+ and/or CO32- ions enabled the L-CaP to cover the entire surface of Zr-50Ti alloys within only one day. After short-term soaking in SBF, the L-CaP layer, modulated by Mg2+ and/or CO32- ions, formed a uniform hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on the surface of the Zr-50Ti alloys, showing potential for optimized bone integration. After soaking in SBF for 14 days, the bonding strength between the apatite layer and alloy has the potential to meet the orthopedic application requirement of 22 MPa. This study demonstrates an effective method to enhance the bioactivity and bonding strength of Zr-50Ti alloys for orthopedic applications.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess hematological diseases next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel enhances the diagnosis and classification of myeloid neoplasms (MN) using the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Hematolymphoid Tumors (WHO-HAEM5) and the International Consensus Classification (ICC) of Myeloid Tumors. A cohort of 112 patients diagnosed with MN according to the revised fourth edition of the WHO classification (WHO-HAEM4R) underwent testing with a 141-gene NGS panel for hematological diseases. Ancillary studies were also conducted, including bone marrow cytomorphology and routine cytogenetics. The cases were then reclassified according to WHO-HAEM5 and ICC to assess the practical impact of these 2 classifications. The mutation detection rates were 93% for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 89% for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), 94% for myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), and 100% for myelodysplasia/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN) (WHO-HAEM4R). NGS provided subclassified information for 26 and 29 patients with WHO-HAEM5 and ICC, respectively. In MPN, NGS confirmed diagnoses in 16 cases by detecting JAK2, MPL, or CALR mutations, whereas 13 "triple-negative" MPN cases revealed at least 1 mutation. NGS panel testing for hematological diseases improves the diagnosis and classification of MN. When diagnosed with ICC, NGS produces more classification subtype information than WHO-HAEM5.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Testicular cancer (TC) is currently the most common malignancy in young and middle-aged men. A comprehensive assessment of TC burden is in lack. METHOD: Global incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of TC from 1990 to 2019 were obtained. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify trends in TC changes during the period. Relationships between disease burden and age, socio-demographic index (SDI) levels, human development index (HDI) were further analyzed. RESULTS: Globally, incident cases of TC more than doubled from 1990 to 2019, together with an increasing of global age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) of TC from 1.9 to 2.8. The age-standardized deaths rates (ASDR) remained stable from 0.31 to 0.28. The similar results were reflected in the DALYs. In 2019, the highest ASIR were found in Southern Latin America, Central Europe and Western Europe. Analogously, the highest ASDR were found in Southern Latin America followed by Central Latin America and Central Europe. The burden of incidence increased with SDI, appropriately reached a peak at about 0.78, and then declined. Similarly, the burden of deaths increased with SDI, met a maximum at about 0.7. CONCLUSIONS: From 1990 to 2019, the ASIR of TC has increased significantly, while the ASDR has been relatively stable and slightly decreased. The disease burden of TC is shifting to regions and countries with moderate to high levels of development. TC remains a rapidly growing global health problem, and new changes in TC burden should be considered when formulating new TC control policies.
