ABSTRACT

Construction of an efficient bio-reductive dechlorination system remains challenging due to the narrow ecological niche and low-growth rate of organohalide-respiring bacteria during field remediation. In this study, a biochar-based organohalide-respiring bacterial agent was obtained, and its performance and effects on indigenous microbial composition, diversity, and inter-relationship in soil were investigated. A well-performing material, Triton X-100 modified biochar (BC600-TX100), was found to have the superior average pore size, specific surface area and hydrophicity, compared to other materials. Interestingly, Pseudomonas aeruginosa CP-1, which is capable of 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination, showed a 348 times higher colonization cell number on BC600-TX100 than that of BC600 after 7 d. Meanwhile, the dechlorination rate in soil showed the highest (0.732 d-1) in the BC600-TX100 bacterial agent than in the other agents. The long-term performance of the BC600-TX100 OHRB agent was also verified, with a stable dechlorination activity over six cycles. Soil microbial community analysis found the addition of the BC600-TX100 OHRB agent significantly increased the relative abundance of genus Pseudomonas from 1.53 % to 11.2 %, and Pseudomonas formed a close interaction relationship with indigenous microorganisms, creating a micro-ecological environment conducive to reductive dechlorination. This study provides a feasible bacterial agent for the in-situ bioremediation of soil contaminated organohalides. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Halogenated organic compounds are a type of toxic, refractory, and bio-accumulative persistent compounds widely existed in environment, widely detected in the air, water, and soil. In this study, we provide a feasible bacterial agent for the in-situ bioremediation of soil contaminated halogenated organic compounds. The application of biochar provides new insights for "Turning waste into treasure", which meets with the concept of green chemistry.

ABSTRACT

The cellulosome of Ruminiclostridium thermocellum was one of the most efficient cellulase systems in nature. However, the product of cellulose degradation by R. thermocellum is cellobiose, which leads to the feedback inhibition of cellulosome, and it limits the R. thermocellum application in the field of cellulosic biomass consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) industry. In a previous study, R. thermocellum M3, which can hydrolyze cellulosic feedstocks into monosaccharides, was isolated from horse manure. In this study, the complete genome of R. thermocellum M3 was sequenced and assembled. The genome of R. thermocellum M3 was compared with the other R. thermocellum to reveal the mechanism of cellulosic saccharification by R. thermocellum M3. In addition, we predicted the key genes for the elimination of feedback inhibition of cellobiose in R. thermocellum. The results indicated that the whole genome sequence of R. thermocellum M3 consisted of 3.6 Mb of chromosomes with a 38.9% of GC%. To be specific, eight gene islands and 271 carbohydrate-active enzyme-encoded proteins were detected. Moreover, the results of gene function annotation showed that 2,071, 2,120, and 1,246 genes were annotated into the Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases, respectively, and most of the genes were involved in carbohydrate metabolism and enzymatic catalysis. Different from other R. thermocellum, strain M3 has three proteins related to ß-glucosidase, and the cellobiose hydrolysis was enhanced by the synergy of gene BglA and BglX. Meanwhile, the GH42 family, CBM36 family, and AA8 family might participate in cellobiose degradation.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the correlation between dose, blood concentration and efficacy of voriconazole in the treatment of invasive fungal infection in children. Methods 68 children treated with voriconazole during January 2019 to December 2019 were collected. The plasma concentration of voriconazole was assayed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The correlation between blood concentration and clinical efficacy was statistically analyzed. Results Different drug blood concentrations were obtained with different dosages: <4.0 mg/kg (6 cases) with the trough concentration ranged from 0.4 to 3.31 μg/ml (r=0.613, P=0.195). (4.0 - 7.0) mg/kg (44 cases), ranged from 0.35 to 7.02 μg/ml (r=0.325, P=0.018); >7.0 mg/kg (18 cases), ranged from 1.46 to 12.45 μg/ml (r=0.584,P<0.023). There was a difference between the three groups (F=7.270, P=0.026). The relationship between the drug blood concentration and the therapeutic effect was obvious. In the <1.0 μg/ml group of 14 cases, 10 cases (71.4%) were effective, and 4 cases were ineffective. In the 1.0 - 5.5 μg/ml group of 48 cases, 44 cases (91.7%) were effective, and 4 cases were ineffective. In the >5.5 μg/ml group of 6 cases, 4 cases (66.7%) were effective and 2 cases ineffective. The difference among the three groups was obvious (χ2=5.360, P=0.039). Among the 68 cases, 58 cases (85.3%) were effective, and 10 cases (14.7%) were ineffective. Adverse reactions occurred in 10 cases (14.7%) with mild liver function injury, which did not affect the treatment and recovered with liver protection treatment. Conclusion This study showed that voriconazole was generally safe and effective in the treatment of invasive fungal infections in children. There was a significant dose-blood concentration and efficacy correlation. Further studies on pharmacokinetics and efficacy should be carried out to optimize the individualized treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the imaging characteristics of chest CT angiography in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with pulmonary embolism, so as to improve the detection rate of active pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with pulmonary embolism.Methods:The clinical data of 103 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis treated in Tianjin Haihe Hospital from January 2013 to January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, including general conditions, symptoms and complications. According to the occurrence of pulmonary embolism, the patients were divided into active pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with pulmonary embolism group (study group, n=43) and active pulmonary tuberculosis without pulmonary embolism group (control group, n=60). The time between the onset of pulmonary embolism and the onset of tuberculosis of the patients in the study group was collected. The chest CT imaging characteristics of the patients of two groups were analyzed. The imaging characteristics, embolism distribution and secondary changes of the patients in the study group were summarized. Results:Time from onset of tuberculosis to pulmonary embolism of the patients in the study group was about 60 days (14 days to 75 days). The incidence of chest tightness and dyspnea of the patients in the study group was significantly higher than that in the control group (all P<0.05). The number of lung lobes involved in lung lesions of the patients in the study group was significantly higher than that in the control group ( P<0.05). The incidence of lesions in the middle lobe of the right lung, the tongue lobe of the left lung and the lower lobes of both lungs of the patients in the study group was higher than that in the control group (all P<0.05). The incidence of peripheral pulmonary embolism was significantly higher than that of central pulmonary embolism ( P<0.05). However, the incidence of atelectasis, pulmonary artery widening, and right heart enlargement in the patients with central pulmonary embolism was significantly higher than that in the patients with central pulmonary embolism (all P<0.05). Conclusions:Multi-slice spiral CT chest angiography can show some important imaging manifestations of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and pulmonary embolism, which is helpful for the early detection of the disease and the improvement of its prognosis. Multi slice spiral CT chest angiography can show some important imaging manifestations of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with pulmonary embolism, and timely detection is helpful to improve the prognosis of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with pulmonary embolism.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the method for estimating the energy and angle of incident protons based on the nuclear track morphology on CR-39.Methods:The CR-39 was irradiated with different energies and angles of incident protons and the morphology of nuclear tracks was scanned and read out by both the atomic force microscope and optical microscope after chemical etching. Through out quantitative analyses of the two-dimensional morphology of the nuclear tracks, an attempt was made to establish the method for estimating the energy and angle of incident particles.Results:As the increase of incident proton energy, the nuclear track became smaller and shallower. In the case of vertical incidence, the track opening was close to a circle. As the incident angle increases, the track opening gradually changed into an ellipse shape. The diameter of the circular nuclear track and the minor axis or the equivalent diameter of the elliptical nuclear track both decrease exponentially ( E= Ae - Bx) with the increase of the incident energy of protons. The fitting coefficients A and B were 15.763 and 0.305, and 15.886 and 0.320 by using the diameter/equivalent diameter and the minor axis of tracks. There also existed a relatively fixed quantitative relationship between the angle of the incident particle and the ratios of the major and minor axes of the elliptical nuclear track. For protons incident at 10° and 20°, the average ratios of the major and minor axes of the nuclear track were 1.10-1.15 and 1.35-1.37, respectively. Conclusions:Based on the diameter or minor axis of the nuclear track formed on CR-39, the energy of incident particles can be estimated, and the angle of incident particles can also be estimated by using the ratio of the major and minor axes of the nuclear track.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the application of implantable cardioverter defibrillator(ICD) in the prevention of sudden cardiac death for children and adolescents, the treatment of adverse events and follow-up studies.Methods:A total of 19 pediatric patients (12 males, 7 females) were admitted in the Department of Pediatric Cardio-logy, Guangdong Provincial People′s Hospital from January 2008 to March 2019, and their previous inpatient and outpatient data including medical history, ICD implantation method, postoperative program control, the use of antiarrhythmic drugs, proper/improper discharge of ICD and management of ventricular electrical storm were collected retrospectively and follow-up study was carried out.Results:A total of 19 pediatric patients were included, all of whom had once syncope or more before ICD implantation.The age at the time of ICD implantation was (12.30±2.08) years, and the weight was (40.00±13.93) kg.Eleven patients were implanted in the subpectoralis major space, 6 cases in the subfascial space, and 2 cases in the left abdomen and left armpit, respectively.All patients received oral antiarrhythmic drugs after surgery.The follow-up period was 3.2 years(0.3-11.1 years). All the children survived without complications such as electrode fracture, dislocation, venous thrombosis, cardiac perforation, capsular hematoma, rupture, and infection.Twelve cases (63.2%) had discharge events, including 10 cases (83.3%) of appropriate recognition/treatment events, and 2 cases (16.7%) of inappropriate recognition/treatment events, while 5 cases were ventricular electrical storms.Totally, 7 ICD cases (36.8%) were equipped with remote monitoring system, and 4 cases (57.1%) were detected whit adverse reactions, which were timely handled online and offline, thus avoiding adverse consequences.Conclusions:Currently, ICD is the most effective treatment for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in children and adolescents.According to age, weight and developmental conditions, different implantation methods should be selected.Appropriate/inappropriate discharge events after implantation should be identified in time, drug treatment should be optimized, and radiofrequency ablation should be performed if necessary.

Objective@#To analyze and summarize the diagnosis and treatment experience of common inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndrome in pediatric patients, and explore the most appropriate therapy.@*Methods@#A retrospective review identified 30 pediatric cases (19 males, 11 females) diagnosed with long QT syndrome (LQTS), Brugada syndrome (BrS), catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), arrhythmogenc right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) from January 2008 to December 2018 in the Pediatric Cardiology Department, Guangdong Provincial People′s Hospital. Data obtained included the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up outcome.@*Results@#The most common inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndromes were LQTS (n=14) including 1 case with epilepsy, CPVT (n=5), HCM (n=7), ARVC (n=1), and BrS (n=3). Twenty-seven cases were admitted to hospital due to syncope, whereas the remaining 3 cases of BrS had not presented with syncope before admission. The average onset age of inherited arrhythmia was (10.0±3.3) years. Genetic testing was performed on 20 patients. The median follow-up time was 40 months. Among 15 patients who underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and survived, 2 patients had frequent ICD discharge. One patient underwent radiofrequency ablation, and the other one received left cardiac sympathetic denervation and an increased ICD defibrillation threshold, and the number of ICD discharge was significantly reduced. Among 10 patients who received drug therapy, 4 patients including two patients who discontinued treatment without advices died. Two patients whose parents refused treatment died, 1 case diagnosed with unexplained sudden cerebral death, and the remaining 2 cases without indication for drug therapy survived without any treatment.@*Conclusions@#Mortality rate is high in pediatric patients with inherited cardiac arrhythmia and syncope. The therapeutic effect of drugs are not satisfactory, ICD implantation is the most effective treatment to prevent sudden cardiac death currently, but the postoperative frequent discharge should be brought to the forefront and handled in time.

Methods The First WeChat platform named " drugs consultation of Shanghai Children ' s Hospital" was inaugurated in Shanghai. Parents of children could search WeChat code or scan the QR code to join in WeChat friends, and asked questions online. Clinical pharmacists took turns on duty to answer questions online every day. Results During June 2014 to January 2016, number of WeChat friends was more than 8000, total number of medication consultation was 13315, average number of daily effective medication consultation was 26 (the peak was more than 60), 20 original medical articles of popular science were released, 100 other medical articles of popular science were reposted. Peak date of consulting was Tuesday, trough date of consulting was Saturday. Peak time of consulting was 9:00-10:00, while trough time of consulting was 4:00-5:00. For consultation, top ten diseases or symptoms was cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, coughing phlegm, diarrhea, infection, pneumonia, skin eczema, adverse drug reactions; Top ten drugs was ibuprofen suspension or suspension drops, ambroxol hydrochloride and clenbuterol hydrochloride oral solution, paracetemol, pseudoephedrine hyrochleride, dextromethorphan hyorobromode and chlorpheniramine maleate suspension, pediatric pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and dextromethorphan hydrobromide drops, azithromycin tablets or suspension, vitamin, combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium granules with multivitamines, live, ambroxol hydrochloride oral solution, montmorillonite powder, loratadine tablets or syrup. Conclusion New mode of internet+pharmaceutical care is recognized by public and official. Clinical pharmacist can ensure the safety of pharmacy in children inside and outside of hospital effectively through WeChat real-time online interaction with parents. Professional brand of full process pharmaceutical care has been made by clinical pharmacists successfully.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effects of WeChat platform online service on the safety of pediatric family medica-tion and the quality of pharmaceutical care. METHODS:The online consultation records of"Qs and As for pediatric medications"were collected and summarized from the WeChat platform(WeChat ID:etyywd)during Jun.1st,2014-Dec.31st,2015 in our hos-pital. Statistical analysis was performed on the consulting time periods,age of pediatric patients with consultation demands,and the systems and mistake types involved in medication consultations. RESULTS:A total of 29 850 dialogue records on WeChat were collected,and 13 315 of these were related to medications(44.61%). The peak time of medication consultation was at 9:00-10:00 in the morning,with an accumulative consultation number of 1 840 cases(13.82%);while the least consultation time pe-riod was at 4:00-5:00 early in the morning,with only 13 cases(0.10%).Pediatric patients in need of consultation were more with-in the age of 1-6 years old,and most of them were preschool children(31.20%)and toddlers(26.32%). The systems consulted mainly involved the respiratory system,immune system and digestive system;in which respiratory system had the most cases (60.28%). There were 1 508 Qs and As records for medication mistakes that were occured or may occure and were corrected in time(11.33%),in which the mistake types were mainly the unsuitable use of antipyretics(3.91%),antibiotics abuse(3.14%), careless use of combination medication and excessive medication(3.04%),excessively large or small doses(0.69%),improper use of nebulized inhalant after discharge(0.41%),and excessive use of vitamins(0.14%). CONCLUSIONS:The WeChat plat-form expands the service scope of clinical pharmacists.As an extension of hospital pharmaceutical care,it reduces the risk of fami-ly medication mistakes due to a patient's or members'wrong recognition to a certain degree,reinforces communication between doctors and patients,and improves the experience of medical services.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of Curcumin on rats with severe acute pancreatitis associated renal injury and explore the possible mechanisms.Methods A total of 72 rats were randomLy divided into sham-operated group(S group, n =24), severe acute panceratitis with renal injury group(M group, n =24) ,Curcumin-treated group(Cur group,n=24).The S and M groups were given 1.5 ml saline through intragastric administration 3 hours before operation,while the Cur group was fed with same amount of Curcumin diluent(200 mg/kg).The pancreas and pancreatic tail-segment was dissociated and the head of pancreas was occlused in rats to form the model,blood vessel forceps was loosed after 3 hours.All the rats were sacrificed at 12 h,24 h, 36 h and 48 h after modeling.The level of ascites, serum amylase, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen were detected and the pathological chang of pancreas was observed under light microscope.Take the right kidney for Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) determination and the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1αmRNA in the right kidney was detected with realtime polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Results Compared with Cur group, the level of ascites, serum amylase, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen in M group were significantly increased, but the activity of SOD, the express of hypoxia inducible factor-1αmRNA had a significant decline (P<0.05).The tissue damage of pancreas and the kidneys became more serious.But a better performance was to be found in the function of the Cur group's kidney and pancreas, and the the difference was statistical significance (P <0.05).Conclusion Curcumin has a good protective effect on severe acute pancreatitis associated renal injury.It may be through up-regulation expression of HIF-1α mRNA and increase the activity of superoxidase dismutase, then reduce the cell apoptosis and necrosis of the kidney, improve the ability of the kidney to tolerate hypoxia.

ABSTRACT

Objective To measure the effect of one-stage transplantation of reverse-flow vascular pedicle fibular grafts in treatment of infected nonunion of the distal tibia.Methods From January 2001 to December 2012,23 patients sustaining the infected nonunion of the distal tibia were transplanted with reverse-flow vascular pedicled fibular grafts in one-stage.There were 13 males and 10 females,aged 26 to 59 years (mean,38.7 years).Tibial nounion based on the Jain-Sinha classification was rated as Type A in 6 patients and Type B in 17 patients.After the operation,the patients received 2-3 weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatment and then 4-week oral antibiotic therapy.Wound healing,limb and ankle joint fucntion and outcomes in fibular transplantation were observed.Results Duration of follow-up was 16-46 months (mean,28.6 months).There were no exudates and ulcerations of the skins.Smooth healing was achieved in all the patients except that fibular fracture was noted in one patient healed after cast immobilization.Healing time ranged from 12 to 28 weeks (mean,15.6 weeks).Limb function evaluated with Ennecking system had (87 ± 11) % restoration.According the Olerud-Molander scoring system,ankle function was excellent in 16 patients and good in 7 patients,with the excellent-good rate of 100%.Conclusion One-stage reverse-flow vascular pedicle fibular grafting is an optional procedure for treatment of infected nonunion of the distal tibia,due to the technique is easy and effective.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of vallarta combined with folic acid in treatment of elderly hypertensive nephropathy.Methods 120 patients of essential hypertension with renal failure in Weifang People’s Hospital were divided into control group and observation group according to the odd and even numbers.The observation group was given vallarta and folic acid,the control group were given vallarta.4 weeks later,the effect of two groups were evaluated.Systolic and diastolic blood pressure,serum cretonne,blood urea nitrogen and 24h urinary protein were measured before and after treatment. Results The patients after treatment systolic and diastolic pressure was significantly better than control group, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),serum creatinine,blood urea nitrogen and 24h urine protein test results were better than control group,the difference was statistically significance(P<0.05).The total effective rate of observation group was better than control group(P<0.05),the obvious effective rate of observation group was significantly better than control group(P<0.01).Conclusion Combination of valsartan and folic acid in treatment of elderly hypertensive nephropathy has a higher total effective rate,while significantly lower blood pressure,serum creatinine,blood urea nitrogen and 24h urinary protein.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of rhodiola on severe acute pancreatitis associated renal injury and explore the potential mechanisms.Methods A total of 90 rats were randomly divided into sham-operated group (S group,n =18),severe acute pancreatitis with renal injury group (M group,n =18),low rhodiola dose group (3 g/kg,T1 group,n =18),moderate dose rhodiola group (6 g/kg,T2 group,n=18),high rhodiola dose group (9 g/kg,T3 group,n =18).The S and M groups were given 6 g/kg saline through intraperitoneal injection before operation while the T1 group,T2 group and T3 group were given with 3 g/kg,6 g/kg,9 g/kg dose of rhodiola through intraperitoneal injection,respectively.The pancreas was dissected and the head of pancreas was occluded by blood vessel forceps for 3 hours to make rat model.All the rats were sacrificed at 12 h,24 h,36 h after modeling.The level of ascites amylase,serum amylase,creatinine,blood urea nitrogen,interleukin 1β(IL-1β) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) were detected and the pathological change of pancreas and the left kidney was observed under light microscope.The serum levels of IL-1β and IL-10 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbert assay (ELISA).Take the right kidney for superoxide dismutase (SOD) determination and the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)mRNA in the right kidney was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Results Compared with the S group,the level of serum amylase,creatinine,blood urea nitrogen and IL-1β in M group increased significantly,but the activity of SOD has a significant decline (P < 0.05).Compared with M group,the level of serum amylase,creatinine,blood urea nitrogen and IL-1 β in T2 group has a significant decline,but the activity of SOD,the express of HIF-1α mRNA and IL-10 has a significant increase (P < 0.05).With the dose of rhodiola increased,the renal and pancreatic function in T2 group had a better performance than T1 group,and the difference was statistical significant (P < 0.05).But compared with T2 group,the renal and pancreatic function in T3 group did not increased significantly (P > 0.05).Conclusions Moderate dose of rhodiola (6 g/kg) has a good protective effect on severe acute pancreatitis associated renal injury.It may be associated with the inhibitory expression of IL-1β,up-regulated expression of IL-10,HIF-1α mRNA,and the increased activity of SOD.So it can then reduce cell apoptosis and renal necrosis,and improve the ability of the kidney to tolerate hypoxia.

@#为了克服康复研究的局限性,需要建立针对康复和相关研究的专门学科领域。基于在基础科学、应用科学和专门学科中的普遍特征,与康复相关的特征以及基于WHO的ICF模型的整合性观点,可以将功能性的生物医学领域划分出5个专门的人类功能和康复研究的学科领域。这些学科结构基于整合性观点,涉及人类功能学科和整合性康复学科,以及部分基于该观念建立的生物学科和生物医学康复学科和工程学,还有处于研究和实践分界边缘的专门康复学科。人类功能学科的目的在于明确人类功能,确定综合性干预目标,以达到人类所体验到的残疾程度最小化。康复中的生物学科的目标是解释身体损伤和修复,并且确定生物医学干预的目标。整合性的康复学科要设计和研究综合性的评定以及干预的方法,这种方法将生物医学的个人的因素以及环境的因素结合起来以达到人类活动的最佳表现。生物医学康复学科和工程研究适于将损伤最小化,包括疾病控制、对人的最佳能力的诊断方法和干预措施。专门康复学科研究如何提供最好的保健以使已经残疾或可能残疾的人在与环境的交互作用中达到和维持最佳功能。将人类功能和康复的研究划分为五个专门的学科领域,可以促进专业培训项目和职业生涯的发展,也可以促进建立人类功能和康复研究的研究架构。

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the methods of cultivating 7-year-program medical students' clinical practice ability and scientific research ability in gynecology. Methods We carried out a training system,in which clinical groups and scientific research groups were guided by tutors,assisted with strict examining measures and reasonable incentive mechanisms. Re-sults According to a practice cycle of 2 years,medical students'overall quality was improved obviously,such as clinical thoughts,basic skills,humanistic qualities,scientific research thoughts and the ability of literature retrieval. Also the teaching enthusiasm and teaching level of the teaching group were improved corresponding. Conclusion Construction and implementation of the training system of clinical groups and scientific research groups under the leadership of the tutors is obviously beneficial to the overall quality of medical students and the integrated teaching capabilities of the professional teaching team.

The significance of the performance of conventional in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) using sibling oocytes from couples with subfertile male or unexplained infertility was evaluated. A total of 410 sibling oocyte cumulus-corona complexes (OCCC) from 21 couples with subfertile male (group A) and 11 unexplained infertile couples (group B) were randomly divided, in order of retrieval, into two groups inseminated either by conventional IVF or by ICSI. The treatment outcomes and the influence of infertility factors on fertilization in each group were compared. The results showed that although the two pronuclear (2PN) fertilization rate per injected sibling oocytes was significantly higher after ICSI (group A: 68.2% +/- 28.8%; group B: 66.2% +/- 24.9%) than after conventional IVF (group A: 41.8% +/- 32.7%; group B: 40.1% +/- 22.1%), the other variables studied included: the fertilization rates of per allocated sibling oocytes IVF/ICSI, the fertilization rates of sibling oocytes IVF/ICSI after excluding failed IVF fertilization cycles, as well as the cleavage rates of normal fertilization were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Similarly, though the total fertilization failure rate in the IVF group (group A: 42.9%; group B: 36.4%) was significantly higher than in the ICSI group (group A: 4.8%; group B: 0), we did not cancel cycles due to the normal fertilization of sibling oocytes. Embryo transfer was possible in all 32 couples. There were 10 clinical pregnancies in the two groups. We also discovered a possible association between some semen parameters and sperm functions of group A, and women age and duration of infertility of group B and fertilization. It is suggested that adoption of the split IVF/ICSI technology in the above cases may help eliminate fertilization failures. This is also a useful method to investigate the effect of single factor on the employment of assisted reproductive technology.
