ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal stem cells based therapy has been used in clinic for almost 20 years and has shown encouraging effects in treating a wide range of diseases. However, the underlying mechanism is far more complicated than it was previously assumed. Mitochondria transfer is one way that recently found to be employed by mesenchymal stem cells to exert its biological effects. As one way of exchanging mitochondrial components, mitochondria transfer determines both mesenchymal stem cells and recipient cell fates. In this review, we describe the factors that contribute to MSCs-MT. Then, the routes and mechanisms of MSCs-MT are summarized to provide a theoretical basis for MSCs therapy. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of MSCs-MT in clinical application are analyzed.

ABSTRACT

Camouflaged objects often blend in with their surroundings, making the perception of a camouflaged object a more complex procedure. However, most neural-network-based methods that simulate the visual information processing pathway of creatures only roughly define the general process, which deficiently reproduces the process of identifying camouflaged objects. How to make modeled neural networks perceive camouflaged objects as effectively as creatures is a significant topic that deserves further consideration. After meticulous analysis of biological visual information processing, we propose an end-to-end prudent and comprehensive neural network, termed IdeNet, to model the critical information processing. Specifically, IdeNet divides the entire perception process into five stages: information collection, information augmentation, information filtering, information localization, and information correction and object identification. In addition, we design tailored visual information processing mechanisms for each stage, including the information augmentation module (IAM), the information filtering module (IFM), the information localization module (ILM), and the information correction module (ICM), to model the critical visual information processing and establish the inextricable association of biological behavior and visual information processing. The extensive experiments show that IdeNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods in all benchmarks, demonstrating the effectiveness of the five-stage partitioning of visual information processing pathway and the tailored visual information processing mechanisms for camouflaged object detection. ABSTRACT

Background: Lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) is a common spinal variant, with the reported prevalence varying from 8.1% to 36%. LSTV has been shown to alter the lumbo-pelvic parameters and reduce the benefits of total hip arthroplasty, but the specific effects of LSTV on hip development remain unclear. The aim of this study was thus to investigate the impact of LSTV on developmental alterations of the hip. Methods: A total of 310 individuals were categorized into three groups according to whole-body computed tomography (CT) imaging: a group with sacralization of 23 presacral vertebrae (PSV) (n=102), a group with lumbarization of 25 PSV (n=108), and a normal control group with 24 PSV (n=100). Quantitative parameters of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex (LPHC) including lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), axial and sagittal acetabular anteversion angle (AAA), center-edge (CE) angle, Sharp angle, and femoral neck-shaft angle (FNSA) were measured and analyzed. Statistical analyses were used to compare the differences of these quantitative parameters among the three groups and to assess the relationship between hip and lumbar-pelvic parameters. Results: Significant differences between each pair of three groups and the LSTV subgroups were only found in the sagittal AAA (left side: P=0.008; right side: P<0.001), with no differences found for the other parameters. Compared to the normal group (24 PSV), both the 23 PSV and 25 PSV groups exhibited increased values in the sagittal AAA, especially in the right side of the 23 PSV group. Only the sagittal AAA showed low-to-moderate positive correlations with pelvic parameters of PI (r=0.195-0.429; P=0.001-0.08) and PT (r=0.239-0.605; P=0.001-0.03). Conclusions: Variations of LSTV are correlated with the hip anatomical development via LPHC transmission and may potentially reduce the sagittal acetabular coverage, particularly in the 23 PSV subtype on the right side.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomic risk factors of knee in patients with acute non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (aACL) ruptures to develop ramp lesions. METHODS: A total of 202 subjects were retrospectively divided into three groups: (1) aACL ruptures combined with ramp lesions group (n = 76); (2) isolated ACL ruptures group (n = 56) and (3) normal controls group (n = 70). Quantitative morphological parameters on MRI were measured including: diameter of medial femoral condyle (MFC), anterior-posterior length and depth of medial tibial plateau (MTP AP length and depth), lateral posterior tibial slope (LPTS) and medial posterior tibial slope (MTPS), asymmetry of LPTS and MPTS (LMPTS), lateral meniscal slope (LMS), and medial meniscal slope (MMS). RESULTS: The MTP AP length, MTP AP length/MFC diameter ratio, MTP depth, LPTS and the asymmetry of LMPTS showed significant differences among the three groups (p < 0.001). The risk factors associated with the ramp lesions including a longer MTP AP length (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.00-1.44, p = 0.044), increased MTP depth (OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.22-3.00, p = 0.005) and lager ratio (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.01-1.22, p = 0.036). The highest AUC was the MTP AP length/MFC diameter ratio (0.74; 95% CI, 0.66-0.82). The combination model increased higher accuracy (0.80; 95% CI, 0.72-0.88). CONCLUSION: Several bony anatomic characteristics of the knee, especially the morphology of medial tibia plateau, are additional risk factors for aACL ruptures to develop ramp lesions. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Predictive anatomic risk factors of the knee for patients with acute non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (aACL) ruptures to develop ramp lesions, especially the morphology of medial tibia plateau, are detectable by MRI. KEY POINTS: Ramp lesion development can complicate aACL ruptures and requires specific treatment. Longer AP length and increased MTP depth are risk factors for concurrent ramp lesions. Identification of ramp lesions allows for the most appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Stormflow runoff is the most important agent for phosphorus (P) input to reservoirs, as the particulates contained in runoff carry a substantial amount of P. The settling process of particulates affects the P content of water, and the distribution of particulates determines the P distribution in reservoir sediment. An understanding of flood impacts on the transport, transition, and accumulation of P in a reservoir is critical to reservoir management. In this study, water samples before and after flooding and sediment samples after flooding were collected from Biliuhe Reservoir in Northeast China. P content and load in the water and P-fractions and particle sizes of the sediments were analyzed. Results showed that total particulate P (TPP) increased sharply from 1.56 to 26.72 t after flooding, whereas dissolved organic P (DOP) decreased markedly from 3.24 to 1.17 t, which was largely caused by biological uptake directly or indirectly before flooding. Orthophosphate (PO43-) shared a similar trend with TPP, indicating that PO43- could be adsorbed onto settling particulates, helping to reduce the reactive P introduced by flooding. Reservoir sediment showed a fining trend downstream and the clay fraction exhibited an obvious correlation with P-fractions, demonstrating that the distribution of particulate matter determined P distribution in the sediment. This study also found that particulates from the largest tributary (Biliu River) were only minimally transported from its reservoir entrance to the dam because of a longer travel distance, while contrastingly, particulates from a smaller tributary (Bajia River) were maximally carried to the dam because of a shorter distance. Our fundings suggests that surface water in the reservoir should be released prior to flooding in order to mitigate control of P in the water, moreover, it is necessary to strengthen the effectiveness of pollutant control projects at the reservoir entrance of the Bajia River.
