ABSTRACT

Microgrids (MGs) based on renewable energies have emerged as a proficient strategy for tackling power quality issues in conventional distribution networks. Nonetheless, MG systems require a suitable control scheme to supply energy optimally towards the electrical grid. This paper presents an innovative framework for designing hybrid Proportional-Resonant (PR) controllers with Linear Quadratic Regulators (LQR), PR+LQR, which merge relevant properties of PR and LQR controllers. This method simultaneously determines the MG control parameters and the current unbalanced factor generated at the distribution network. We select the traditional IEEE 13-bus test feeder network and place two MGs at strategic locations to validate our approach. Moreover, we use the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) to find control parameters through a reliable fitness function that leads to high-performance microgrids. Finally, we conceive several tests to assess the efficacy of GWO for tuning the hybrid controller and compare the resulting data across distinct realistic operation conditions representing power quality events. So, we choose four case studies considering different renewable energy penetration indexes and power factors and evaluate the effects of the MGs over the distribution grid. We also compare the proposed hybrid PR+LQR controller against closely-related alternatives from the literature and validate its robustness and stability through the disk margin approach and the Nyquist criterion. Our numerical simulations prove that hybrid controllers driven by GWO are highly reliable strategies, yielding an average unbalanced current reduction of 30.03%.

ABSTRACT

The introduction of resistant and lightweight materials in the construction industry has led to civil structures being vulnerable to excessive vibrations, particularly in footbridges exposed to human-induced gait loads. This interaction, known as Human-Structure Interaction (HSI), involves a complex interplay between structural vibrations and gait loads. Despite extensive research on HSI, the simultaneous effects of lateral structural vibrations with fundamental frequencies close to human gait frequency (around 1.0 Hz) and wide amplitudes (over 30.0 mm) remain inadequately understood, posing a contemporary structural challenge highlighted by incidents in iconic bridges like the Millennium Bridge in London, Solferino Bridge in Paris, and Premier Bridge in Cali, Colombia. This paper focuses on the experimental exploration of Structure-to-Human Interaction (S2HI) effects using the Human-Structure Interaction Multi-Axial Test Framework (HSI-MTF). The framework enables the simultaneous measurement of vertical and lateral loads induced by human gait on surfaces with diverse frequency ranges and wide-amplitude lateral harmonic motions. The study involved seven test subjects, evaluating gait loads on rigid and harmonic lateral surfaces with displacements ranging from 5.0 to 50.0 mm and frequency content from 0.70 to 1.30 Hz. A low-cost vision-based motion capture system with smartphones analyzed the support (Tsu) and swing (Tsw) periods of human gait. Results indicated substantial differences in Tsu and Tsw on lateral harmonic protocols, reaching up to 96.53% and 58.15%, respectively, compared to rigid surfaces. Normalized lateral loads (LL) relative to the subject's weight (W0) exhibited a linear growth proportional to lateral excitation frequency, with increased proportionality constants linked to higher vibration amplitudes. Linear regressions yielded an average R2 of 0.815. Regarding normalized vertical load (LV) with respect to W0, a consistent behavior was observed for amplitudes up to 30.0 mm, beyond which a linear increase, directly proportional to frequency, resulted in a 28.3% increment compared to rigid surfaces. Correlation analyses using Pearson linear coefficients determined relationships between structural surface vibration and pedestrian lateral motion, providing valuable insights into Structure-to-Human Interaction dynamics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of reclassification of prehypertensive and unclassified adolescents by 2022 American Heart Association pediatric ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) guidelines, and to evaluate the association of the new diagnostic categories with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). STUDY DESIGN: A single-center, retrospective review of ABPM reports from adolescents 13-21 years old, from 2015 through 2022, was performed. Adolescents with prehypertension or unclassified by 2014 guidelines were reclassified by 2022 definitions. Logistic regression models evaluated the association of reclassification phenotypes with LVH. RESULTS: A majority of prehypertensive adolescents reclassified to hypertension (70%, n = 49/70). More than one-half (57%, n = 28/49) of the hypertension was isolated nocturnal hypertension, and 80% was systolic hypertension. Reclassification to hypertension was more common in males. The majority (55.6%) of unclassified adolescents were reclassified to normotension. No demographic or clinical variables were associated with reclassification categories. LVH was not associated with hypertension in the reclassified prehypertensive or unclassified groups. CONCLUSIONS: The 2022 ABPM guidelines clearly define blood pressure phenotypes. However, reclassification to hypertension was not associated with an increased odds of LVH. Because most prehypertensive adolescents reclassified as hypertensive by nighttime BPs alone, this study highlights the lowered threshold for nocturnal hypertension. Prospective studies in larger, well-defined cohorts are needed to describe better the predictive value of 2022 BP phenotypes for target organ damage.

ABSTRACT

Additive manufacturing is fast becoming a key process to manufacture a customized design with complex geometry and one process usually employed is based on the fused filament fabrication. Up to now this method is typically employed for rapid prototyping, it is therefore their mechanical strength is lower than the components manufactured using conventional casting process. It is well known that most failures are happened under repeated loads; therefore, a functional component mandatory needs to reach endurance strength under cyclic loads. Hence, this study set out to clarify several aspects of filament fused test specimens to determine their effect on accumulated damage to then predict component life under repeated loads. In this study is considered three waveforms such as sinusoidal, triangular and square, where it is observed that the square waveform provides the most severe loads. This study therefore makes a major contribution to research on the fatigue properties of parts manufactured using fused filament by reporting their fatigue behaviour under different fatigue load conditions. It would give a better understanding to improve the mechanical prediction of PLA, thereby it might be used to manufacture a functional component instead of only a prototype or spare part.

ABSTRACT

A methodology to estimate the structural fragility of RC bridges, considering the effects of seismic loadings and corrosion over time, is presented. Two scenarios are considered: (a) The structure is exposed only to seismic loads, (b) Both the effect of corrosion and seismic loads are present in the system. The uncertainties related to material properties, structural geometry, seismic occurrences, corrosion initiation time, cracking and corrosion evolution are considered. Different time stages, such as 0, 50, 75, 100, and 125 years are selected to evaluate the effect of both seismic loads and seismic loads plus corrosion. The calculation of fragility curves implies a structural design, nonlinear modeling of structures with simulated properties, estimation of both corrosion times and seismic occurrences, and evaluation of structural demand over time considering the effect of seismic loads and corrosion. An illustrative example is provided on an RC continuous bridge with AASHTO beams, cap beams and circular columns located in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. A performance level equal to 0.002 is chosen for the design of the structure. Results show that the probability of exceeding the design performance levels for both cases (seismic and seismic plus corrosion) are similar at the stage of time equal to zero (a newly built bridge). However, such probabilities, after 150 years, are equal to 0.61 and 0.85 due to the cumulative damage caused by seismic and seismic plus corrosion, respectively. The estimation of the probability of exceeding a certain performance level, considering the effect of corrosion together with seismic loads, highlights the importance of considering more than one type of solicitation for these kinds of structural systems. Lastly, recommendations about design are given.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to describe the total and fragmented external loads, at different intensities, of soccer referees in European and South American competitions during official matches through a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies. A systematic review was conducted in April, 2020. In all, 32 studies were included, incorporating 578 referees evaluated in 3170 games through video analysis or a global positioning system. Regarding external loads, it was observed that the total average distance covered by the referees was 10,461.74 m, with running speeds predominantly below 13 km.h-1. The total distance covered by the referees in the European competitions was higher and more intense than that of the referees in the South American tournaments, being 11,187.02 m and 9319.61 m, respectively. We suggest that referees' training can be organized according to the distances found at different intensities, in which low-intensity races can be performed below 13 km.h-1 with distances of approximately 4500 m, while high-intensity training can be developed with speeds from 18 to 24 km.h-1 for approximately 800 m. In addition, planning must consider the competition characteristics.

Abstract The tick Amblyomma tigrinum inhabits areas with diverse climatic conditions, with adult stages parasitizing wild canids, such as chilla (Lycalopex griseus) and culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) foxes. We described the infestation loads in wild foxes captured at three sites (periurban, rural and wild) through an anthropization gradient in north-central Chile. We tested whether local-scale environmental and/or individual host factors can predict tick abundance by using negative binomial models. During 2018-2020 (spring and summer), we captured 116 foxes (44 chillas and 72 culpeos), and 102 of them were infested with ticks (87.9%, CI=80.6-93.2%). We collected 996 A. tigrinum adult ticks, estimating a total mean abundance of 8.6±0.8 ticks/host. Periurban and rural foxes harbored greater tick loads than foxes from the wild site (2.34 and 1.71 greater, respectively) while tick abundance in summer decreased by up to 57% compared to spring. Tempered, more humid climate conditions of the periurban site could favor the development and survival of adults A. tigrinum; and ticks may have adopted a quiescent stage or similar survival mechanisms to cope with summer temperature increases related to the ongoing megadrought. Further studies are warranted to understand the underlying factors determining the life cycle of A. tigrinum at larger spatiotemporal scales.


Resumo Amblyomma tigrinum habita em áreas com diversas condições climáticas, com estágios adultos, geralmente, parasitando canídeos silvestres, como chilla (Lycalopex griseus) e culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus). Neste trabalho, são descritas as cargas de infestação de A. tigrinum em raposas silvestres, capturadas em três locais (periurbano, rural e silvestre) no centro-norte do Chile. Foi testado se os fatores ambientais e/ou individuais do hospedeiro, em escala local, podem prever a abundância de carrapatos, usando-se modelos binomiais negativos. Durante 2018-2020 (primavera e verão), foram capturadas 116 raposas (44 chillas e 72 culpeos), e 102 delas estavam infestadas por carrapatos (87,9%, IC=80,6-93,2%). Foram coletados 996 carrapatos adultos de A. tigrinum, estimando-se uma abundância média total de 8,6±0,8 carrapatos/hospedeiro. As raposas periurbanas e rurais abrigaram cargas de carrapatos maiores do que as raposas do local silvestre (2,34 e 1,71 maior, respectivamente), enquanto a abundância de carrapatos, no verão, diminuiu até 57% em comparação com a primavera. As condições climáticas temperadas e mais úmidas do sítio periurbano podem favorecer o desenvolvimento e a sobrevivência dos adultos de A. tigrinum; e os carrapatos podem ter adotado um estágio quiescente ou mecanismos de sobrevivência semelhantes, para lidar com os aumentos de temperatura no verão, relacionados à mega seca em andamento.

In their paper on intersexual differences in niche breadth and niche overlap in floral resource use in hummingbird communities, Maglianesi et al. compiled data of plant-hummingbird interactions based on pollen loads, and territoriality and morphological traits for 31 hummingbird species, and investigated whether patterns of resource use by females and males were related to sexual dimorphism and foraging behaviour. While accounting for evolutionary relatedness among species, the authors found a high level of resource partitioning between sexes (broader and more dissimilar floral niche breadth in females) and the sex-specific resource use by hummingbird species was related to territoriality and morphological traits; niche overlap between sexes was greater for territorial than non-territorial species, and lower for species with greater sexual dimorphism in bill curvature. This paper addresses two very timely issues, on the one hand on resource partitioning by sex to reduce intersexual competition in hummingbirds, and on the other hand highlight the much needed information on foraging ecology of female hummingbirds for better understanding of intersexual variation in shaping coexistence and species diversity in hummingbird communities and the interactions between plants and their hummingbird pollinators.

ABSTRACT

Research on resource partitioning in plant-pollinator mutualistic systems is mainly concentrated at the levels of species and communities, whereas differences between males and females are typically ignored. Nevertheless, pollinators often show large sexual differences in behaviour and morphology, which may lead to sex-specific patterns of resource use with the potential to differentially affect plant reproduction and diversification. We investigated variation in behavioural and morphological traits between sexes of hummingbird species as potential mechanisms underlying sex-specific flower resource use in ecological communities. To do so, we compiled a dataset of plant-hummingbird interactions based on pollen loads for 31 hummingbird species from 13 localities across the Americas, complemented by data on territorial behaviour (territorial or non-territorial) and morphological traits (bill length, bill curvature, wing length and body mass). We assessed the extent of intersexual differences in niche breadth and niche overlap in floral resource use across hummingbird species. Then, we tested whether floral niche breadth and overlap between sexes are associated with sexual dimorphism in behavioural or morphological traits of hummingbird species while accounting for evolutionary relatedness among the species. We found striking differences in patterns of floral resource use between sex. Females had a broader floral niche breadth and were more dissimilar in the plant species visited with respect to males of the same species, resulting in a high level of resource partitioning between sexes. We found that both territoriality and morphological traits were related to sex-specific resource use by hummingbird species. Notably, niche overlap between sexes was greater for territorial than non-territorial species, and moreover, niche overlap was negatively associated with sexual dimorphism in bill curvature across hummingbird species. These results reveal the importance of behavioural and morphological traits of hummingbird species in sex-specific resource use and that resource partitioning by sex is likely to be an important mechanism to reduce intersexual competition in hummingbirds. These findings highlight the need for better understanding the putative role of intersexual variation in shaping patterns of interactions and plant reproduction in ecological communities.


La investigación sobre la partición de recursos en los sistemas mutualistas planta-polinizador se concentra principalmente en los niveles de especies y comunidades, mientras que las diferencias entre machos y hembras suelen ser ignoradas. Sin embargo, los polinizadores suelen mostrar grandes diferencias sexuales en su comportamiento y morfología, lo que puede dar lugar a patrones específicos de uso de recursos para cada sexo con el potencial de afectar de forma diferencial la reproducción y la diversificación de las plantas. Se estudió la variación en los rasgos de comportamiento y morfológicos entre sexos de las especies de colibríes como posibles mecanismos que explican el uso de recursos florales específicos para cada sexo en las comunidades ecológicas. Para ello, se recopiló un conjunto de datos de interacciones planta-colibrí con base en las cargas de polen de 31 especies de colibríes de 13 localidades en las Américas, además de datos sobre su comportamiento territorial (territorial o no territorial) y rasgos morfológicos (longitud y curvatura del pico, longitud del ala y masa corporal). Se evaluaron las diferencias intersexuales en la amplitud y el solapamiento del nicho en el uso de los recursos florales para las distintas especies de colibríes. Posteriormente, se comprobó si la amplitud del nicho floral y el solapamiento entre sexos están asociados con el dimorfismo sexual en los rasgos de comportamiento o morfológicos de las especies de colibríes, teniendo en cuenta el parentesco evolutivo entre las especies. Se encontraron diferencias notables en los patrones de uso de los recursos florales entre sexos. Las hembras presentaron una mayor amplitud de nicho floral y fueron más disímiles en las especies de plantas visitadas con respecto a los machos de la misma especie, lo que resultó en un alto nivel de partición de recursos entre los sexos. Se encontró que tanto la territorialidad como los rasgos morfológicos están relacionados con el uso de recursos específicos por sexo en las especies de colibríes. En particular, el solapamiento de nicho entre sexos fue mayor para las especies territoriales que para las no territoriales y, además, el solapamiento de nicho se asoció negativamente con el dimorfismo sexual en la curvatura del pico en las especies de colibríes. Estos resultados revelan la importancia de los rasgos conductuales y morfológicos de las especies de colibríes en el uso de recursos según el sexo y que la partición de recursos entre sexos es probablemente un mecanismo importante para reducir la competencia intersexual en los colibríes. Estos resultados ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de comprender mejor el rol que tiene la variación intersexual en los patrones de interacción y en la reproducción de las plantas en las comunidades ecológicas.

Monitoring solute fluxes in water quality studies is essential to reveal potential ecosystem disturbances, and is particularly important in Andean headwater catchments as they are the main sources of water for downstream populations. However, such studies have mainly focused on organic matter and nutrients, disregarding other solutes that can threaten water quality (e.g. arsenic, lead, calcium or magnesium). Additionally, routine low-resolution (weekly or monthly) sampling schemes may overlook important solute dynamics. Therefore, we collected water samples every four hours for the analysis of twenty-four solutes in a pristine tropical Andean páramo catchment. Solute fluxes were calculated using five different methods. The 4-hourly data set was filtered to test for an optimum sampling frequency without compromising export rates. Based on the available 4-hourly data, the results showed that the interpolation export method was best suited, due to a weak correlation with discharges. Of the twenty-four solutes analyzed, Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), Total Nitrogen bound (TNb), Si, Ca, Mg, K, and Na presented the highest input rates (with DOC = 4.167E+08 mEq km-2 yr-1 and Si = 1.729E+07 mEq km-2 yr-1) and export rates (with DOC = 2.686E+08 mEq km-2 yr-1 and Si = 2.953E+08 mEq km-2 yr-1). Moreover, DOC, TNb, NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO4, Al, B, Cu, Fe, Zn, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and V presented more input than export, while Ca, K, Mg, Na, Rb, Si, Sr, and Ba presented more export than input (geogenic sources). Filtered sampling frequencies demonstrated that a minimum of daily grab samples would be required to obtain reliable export rates with differences consistently below 10%, when compared to the 4-hourly solute export. These findings can be particularly useful for the implementation of long-term monitoring programs at low cost, and they provide high-quality information, for the first time, on biogeochemical budgets in a pristine páramo catchment.

The dynamics of total phosphorus (TP) in 18 strategic reservoirs of the high-density reservoir network of the Brazilian semiarid was evaluated during the wet and dry periods for the past 12 years. Seasonal overlying concentrations presented no significant differences for about 90% of the reservoirs (p>0.05). This was attributed to a trade-off between the hydrological/limnological processes occurring in the two seasons. Then, a transient complete-mix mass balance model was applied with particular adaptations for the tropical semiarid reservoirs to estimate the TP load for each season. Because of the relatively well-mixed conditions and high hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen concentrations during the wet season, the wet load was assumed to represent the external TP load. On the other hand, because of the absence of reservoir inflow during the dry season, phosphorus release under anoxic sediment conditions and wind-induced resuspension under shallow water depths, the dry load was assumed to reflect the internal TP load. The maximum external loads were related to peak inflows, notably after drought periods. Consistently, the largest internal loads were obtained during the drought periods, when the reservoirs were shallower and more prone to phosphorus release and resuspension. By comparing the impact of the two input load types, the wet period load was predominant in 72% of the reservoirs. The areal phosphorus loads ranged from 0.66 to 7.29 gP m2 year-1, which were consistent with the literature, despite the very high density of reservoirs. Finally, power-law curves including data for all studied reservoirs were adjusted between the dry period load and volume, dry and wet period loads, wet period load and inflow, and total load and catchment area, resulting in satisfactory R2 (0.84-0.98).

ABSTRACT

This study explored the correlation between interleukins (IL)-12, IL-18, and IL-21 and the viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). A total of 142 patients were consecutively enrolled. All were hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive for >6 months and did not receive drug therapy. An ELISA kit was used to test the IL-12, IL-18, IL-21, and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) levels in serum samples from chronic HBV patients and healthy control groups. The amounts of IL-12 and IL-18 were highest in the 5-6log10 (high viral load) group, while IL-21 was highest in the 3-4log10 (low viral load) group. Also, the IL-21 amount was decreased in the HBsAg+/HBeAg/HBcAb+ group, and IL-12, IL-18, and IL-21 were decreased in the normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) group compared to the abnormal ALT group. These data suggested that IL-12, IL-18, and IL-21 serum levels were positively correlated with disease progression and could reflect disease severity for different HBV-DNA loads. Detection of IL-12, IL-18, and IL-21 levels was found to be helpful for evaluating the degree of liver cell damage and predicting the progression of hepatitis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This paper introduces a methodology for the optimal design of passive Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) to control the dynamic response of buildings subjected to earthquake loads. The selection process of the optimal design parameters is carried out through a metaheuristic approach based on differential evolution (DE) which is a fast, efficient, and precise technique that does not require high computational efforts. The algorithm is aimed to reduce the maximum horizontal peak displacement of the structure and the root mean square (RMS) response of displacements as well. Furthermore, four more objective functions derived from multiple weighted linear combinations of the two previously mentioned parameters are also studied to obtain the most efficient TMD design configuration. A parallel process based on an exhaustive search (ES) with precision to 2 decimal positions is used to validate the optimization methodology based on DE. The proposed methodology is then applied to a 32-story case-study derived from an actual building structure and subjected to different ground acceleration registers. The best dynamic performance of the building is observed when the greatest weight is given to the RMS response of displacement in the optimization process. Finally the numerical results reveal that the proposed methodology based on DE is effective in finding the optimal TMD design configuration by reducing the maximum floor displacement up to 4% and RMS values of displacement of up to 52% in the case-study building.


RESUMEN Este artículo presenta una metodología para el diseño óptimo de Amortiguadores de Masa Sintonizada (AMS) para el control de la respuesta dinámica de edificios sometidos a cargas sísmicas. El proceso de selección de los parámetros óptimos de diseño se realiza mediante un enfoque metaheurístico basado en Evolución Diferencial (ED) la cual es una técnica rápida, eficiente y precisa que no requiere grandes esfuerzos computacionales. El algoritmo tiene como objetivo reducir el desplazamiento de pico horizontal máximo de la estructura y también la media cuadrática (Valor eficaz) de desplazamientos. Adicionalmente, se estudian otras cuatro funciones objetivo derivadas de múltiples combinaciones lineales ponderadas de los dos parámetros mencionados anteriormente para obtener la configuración de diseño del AMS más eficiente. De forma paralela, se utiliza un proceso basado en una búsqueda exhaustiva (ES) con precisión a 2 posiciones decimales para validar la metodología de optimización basada en DE. Posteriormente, la metodología propuesta se aplica a un caso de estudio derivado de un edificio real de 32 pisos sometido a diferentes registros sísmicos de aceleración del suelo. Se observa un mejor comportamiento dinámico del edificio cuando se le da el mayor peso a la respuesta RMS de desplazamiento en el proceso de optimización. Finalmente, los resultados numéricos revelan que la metodología propuesta basada en DE es efectiva para encontrar la configuración óptima de diseño de TMD al reducir el desplazamiento máximo del piso hasta en un 43% y los valores RMS de desplazamiento de hasta el 52% en el caso de estudio.


RESUMO Este artigo apresenta uma metodologia para a otimização de amortecedores de massa sintonizados (TMD) para o controle da resposta dinâmica de edifícios sujeitos a cargas sísmicas. O processo de seleção dos parâmetros ótimos é realizado mediante uma abordagem metaheunstica baseada na Evolução Diferencial (DE) que é uma técnica rápida, eficiente e precisa que não requer de grandes esforços computacionais. O algoritmo visa reduzir o deslocamento máximo do pico horizontal da estrutura e também os deslocamentos da raiz quadrada média (RMS). Além disso, quatro outras funções objetivo derivadas de distintas combinações lineares ponderadas dos dois parâmetros de resposta já mencionados, são estudadas para obter a configuração de TMD mais eficiente. Em paralelo, um processo de busca exaustiva (ES) com precisão de 2 casas decimais é usado para validar a metodologia de otimização baseada na DE. Posteriormente, a metodologia proposta é aplicada a um caso de estudo derivado de um edifício real de 32 andares sujeito a diferentes registros de aceleração sísmica do solo. É observado um melhor comportamento dinâmico do edifício quando é dada uma maior ponderação no processo de otimização à resposta de deslocamento RMS. Finalmente, os resultados numéricos revelam que a metodologia proposta fundamentada na DE é eficaz para encontrar os parâmetros ótimos do TMD, reduzindo o pico de deslocamento máximo em até 43% e os valores de deslocamento RMS em até 52% no caso estudado.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the impact of a soccer game on the creatine kinase (Ck) response and recovery and the specific Global Positioning System (GPS)-accelerometry-derived performance analysis during matches and comparing playing positions. A sample composed of 118 observations of 24 professional soccer teams of the Brazil League Serie A was recruited and classified according to playing positions, i.e., Left/Right Defenders (D = 30, age: 25.2 ± 5.8 years, height: 187 ± 5.5 cm, weight: 80 ± 5.8 kg), Offensive Midfielders (OM = 44, age: 25.1 ± 0.2 years, height: 177 ± 0.3 cm, weight: 73 ± 1.2 kg), Forwards (F = 9, age: 25.1 ± 0.2 years, height: 176.9 ± 4.3 cm, weight: 74.5 ± 2.1 kg), Left/Right Wingers (M = 23, age: 24.5 ± 0.5 years, height: 175 ± 1.1 cm, weight: 74 ± 4.4 kg), and Strikers (S = 12, age: 28 ± 0.2 years, height: 184 ± 1.0 cm, weight: 80 ± 1.4 kg). Blood Ck concentration was measured pre-, immediately post-, and 24 h postgame, and the GPS-accelerometry parameters were assessed during games. Findings demonstrated that Ck concentrations were higher at all postgame moments when compared with pregame, with incomplete recovery markers being identified up to 24 h after the game (range: 402-835 U/L). Moreover, Midfielders (108.6 ± 5.6 m/min) and Forwards (109.1 ± 8.3 m/min) had a higher relative distance vs. other positions (100.9 ± 10.1 m/min). Strikers [8.2 (8.1, 9.05) load/min] and Defenders [8.45 (8, 8.8) load/min] demonstrated lower load/min than Wingers [9.5 (9.2, 9.8) load/min], Midfielders [10.6 (9.9, 11.67) load/min], and Forwards [11 (10.65, 11, 15) load/min]. These results could be used to adopt specific training programs and recovery strategies after match according to the playing positions.

ABSTRACT

In large industrialized cities, tons of particles containing heavy metals are released into the environment and accumulate on street surfaces. Such particles cause a potential risk to human health due to their composition and size. The heavy metal contamination levels, main emission sources, and human health risks were identified in 482 samples of street dust. Heavy metal concentrations were obtained by microwave-assisted acid digestion and ICP-OES. The results indicated that street dust in Mexico City is contaminated mainly with Pb, Zn, and Cu, according to the contamination factor and the geoaccumulation index. The pollution load index of the street dust was made with the concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni. The main sources of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cr are anthropic, probably due to vehicular traffic. The highest levels of Cr and Pb in urban dust represent a health risk for children. Contamination limits were proposed for heavy metals in street dust of Mexico City. These limits might be useful to generate and apply public policies to decrease anthropic emissions of the heavy metals studied, particularly Cr and Pb.

ABSTRACT

The assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is important for minimizing the risks of nonfunctional overreaching, and monitoring training loads has rapidly grown in recent years. The objective of the study was to compare the acute upper body performance and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) responses to high-volume (HV) and high-intensity (HI) resistance-training loads. Sixteen young resistance-trained men (4 repetition maximum [RM] bench press = 105.8 ± 15.9 kg) were divided into two groups of eight subjects each that performed a HI (3 sets of 4RM with 180 s of rest), and a HV (4 sets of 12RM with 90 s of rest) training sessions. Session RPE was obtained 30 min Post. The medicine-ball throw (MBT) performance was measured at pre, and 10 min post. Training volume load (movements × load), and intensity (volume load ÷ movements) were calculated. Volume load was significantly higher for HV (10890 ± 1241 kg) than HI (2718 ± 413 kg) protocol (p < 0.001). Intensity was significantly higher for HI (100.7 ± 15.3 kg) than HV (75.6 ± 8.6 kg) protocol (p = 0.002). MBT performance was significantly reduced from pre- to post- HV (p < 0.001; Δ = -11%), but not in HI (p = 0.15; Δ = -5%). RPE was significantly higher Post-HI (9.9 ± 0.4) than Post HV (8.9 ± 0.8) (p = 0.01). We conclude that higher volume loads induce greater upper body neuromuscular fatigue in young resistance-trained men. Session RPE may reflect training intensity, but not the performance impairments.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo. Determinar la prevalência de síntomas musculoesqueléti-cos en operadores logísticos de una empresa de envíos de Santander. Materiales y métodos. Estudio descriptivo transversal, con la participación de 67 trabajadores de sexo masculino. Se analizó el autorreporte de síntomas musculoesqueléticos con el Cuestionario Nórdico Estandarizado. Resultados. El promedio de edad fue de 31 años. El 54 % de la población tiene sobrepeso, lleva en promedio 4,7 años en la labor y trabaja en promedio 70 horas semanales. La zona con mayor prevalencia de molestias es la espalda baja, con el 76 %. Del total de casos, el 48 % presentó molestias en más de un segmento corporal y el 37 % en solo una zona del cuerpo, el 85 % de la población reportó al menos un síntoma musculoesquelético. Conclusión. La región de la espalda baja presentó mayor sintomatología con el 76 %, seguido de los hombros y el cuello. La región que menos síntomas reportaron los trabajadores es a nivel de codos.


Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in logistics operators of a Santander shipping company. Materials and method: Descriptive cross-sectional study, with the participation of 67 male workers. The self-report of musculoskeletal symptoms was analyzed with the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire. Results: The average age was 31 years. 54% of the population is overweight, they have been working on average 4.7 years and work an average of 70 hours per week. The area with the highest prevalence of discomfort is the lower back, with 76%. Of all cases, 48% presented discomfort in more than one body segment and 37% in only one area of the body. 85% of the population reported, at least, one musculoskeletal symptom. Conclusion: The lower back region presented the most symptoms with 76%, followed by the shoulders and neck. The region with the least symptoms reported by workers is at the elbow level.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the effects of two jump squat (JS) training programs involving different loading ranges in under-20 soccer players during a preseason period. Twenty-three elite young soccer players performed sprint speed (at 5-, 10-, and 20-m), change-of-direction (COD) speed, JS peak-power (PP), and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests pre and post four weeks of training. Athletes were pair-matched in two groups according to their optimum power loads (OPL) as follows: lower than OPL (LOPL; athletes who trained at a load 20% lower than the OPL) and higher than OPL (HOPL; athletes who trained at a load 20% higher than the OPL). Magnitude-based inferences were used to compare pre- and post-training measures. Meaningful increases in the PP JS were observed for both groups. Likely and possible improvements were observed in the 5- and 10-m sprint velocity in the LOPL group. Meanwhile, possible and likely improvements were observed in the CMJ, 5- and 10-m sprint velocity, and COD speed in the HOPL group. Overall, both training schemes induced positive changes in athletic performance. Soccer coaches and sport scientists can implement the JS OPL-based training schemes presented here, either separately or combined, to improve the physical performance of youth soccer players.

Resumen El presente trabajo se enmarca en el contexto de las alternativas relacionadas con la planificación del entrenamiento deportivo, a partir de los modelos ATR (acumulación- transformación-realización). En correspondencia con las concepciones que hoy se utilizan en materia de planificación del entrenamiento, se evidencia la importancia de la interconexión de los contenidos en la preparación de los boxeadores, a partir de la conjugación de cargas cuyas rutas metabólicas son fundamentalmente la fosfagénica, anaerobia aláctica y la glicolitica, anaerobia láctica. El objetivo de la investigación radica en valorar el estado de la planificación del entrenamiento, en función de las tendencias más actuales, relacionadas con la interconexión de las cargas y el modelo ATR en la preparación de los boxeadores de la Academia Provincial de Pinar del Río. Para el estudio, se utilizó una muestra conformada por 13 atletas y siete entrenadores de la Academia Provincial de boxeo de Pinar del Río. Se emplearon diferentes técnicas y métodos como la entrevista a entrenadores, la observación y la medición. No obstante, los documentos y orientaciones de la Comisión Nacional de boxeo aún no cubren todas las expectativas de los colectivos pedagógicos de entrenadores de la academia, lo que deja un margen a la interpretación, por parte de las Comisiones Técnicas de los territorios en cuanto a las alternativas, a la planificación del entrenamiento y la definición de las direcciones e interconexión de estas. Resulta necesario encontrar un mecanismo que, en el plano didáctico, oriente mejor al entrenador en este sentido.


Abstract The present work is framed in the context of the alternatives related to the planning of the sport training, from the ATR models (accumulation-transformation-realization). In correspondence with the conceptions used today in training planning, the importance of the interconnection of the contents in the preparation of boxers is evident, from the conjugation of loads whose metabolic routes are fundamentally phosphagenic, alactic anaerobic and lactic anaerobic glycolithic. The objective of the research is to assess the situation of the training planning, based on the most current trends related to the interconnection of the loads and the ATR model in the preparation of the boxers of the Provincial Academy of Pinar del Río. For the study it was selected a sample, consisting on 13 athletes and 7 coaches from the Provincial Boxing Academy of Pinar del Río. Different methods and techniques such as the interview, the observation and the measurement were used. This study was carried outin correspondence with the most advanced conceptions regarding training planning. It reveals the importance of the interconnection of the contents in the preparation of the boxers from the combination of lactic anaerobic loads and lactic ones. However, the documents and guidelines of the National Boxing Commission still do not meet all the expectations of the pedagogical groups of trainers of the academy, which leaves a margin for interpretation by the Technical Commissions of the territories as regards alternatives, the planning of training and the definition of the directions and interconnection of these. It is necessary to find a mechanism that, at the didactic level, better orients the trainer in this sense.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to compare the power production in traditional bench-press (TBP) and ballistic bench-throw (BBT) exercises. Furthermore, we assessed the differences in velocity, force, and power outputs between TBP and BBT. Finally, we tested the differences between the loads used to optimize power (optimum power load; OPL) in both exercises, using three distinct power-variables: mean power (MP), mean propulsive power (MPP), and peak power (PP). Sixty athletes from different sports were divided into two groups, according to their training characteristics: hypertrophy-based trained athletes (HTA), thirty-one athletes performing hypertrophy training programmes for (at least) 12-weeks; and power-based trained athletes (PTA), twenty-nine athletes performing power-oriented training sessions for (at least) 12-weeks. Magnitude-based inferences were used to test for differences between groups. Independent of the variable analyzed (MP, MPP, or PP), the PTA produced greater power values in BBT, whereas the HTA generated higher outputs during TBP. The OPL in the HTA was likely heavier in TBP than in BBT, whereas no differences related to this variable were found in the PTA. Despite the apparent superiority of ballistics to produce power, it seems that in elite athletes, the strength-power training routine might affect the ability to apply high forces at very-high velocities.
