ABSTRACT

Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, due to its high sensitivity and capability for real-time online monitoring, is one of the most promising tools for the rapid identification of external water in rainwater pipe networks. However, difficulties in obtaining actual samples lead to insufficient real samples, and the complex composition of wastewater can affect the accurate traceability analysis of external water in rainwater pipe networks. In this study, a new method for identifying external water in rainwater pipe networks with a small number of samples is proposed. In this method, the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) algorithm was initially used to generate spectral data from the absorption spectra of water samples; subsequently, the multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) algorithm was applied to process the UV-Vis absorption spectra of different types of water samples; following this, the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) algorithm was employed to decompose and recombine the spectra after MSC; and finally, the long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm was used to establish the identification model between the recombined spectra and the water source types, and to determine the optimal number of decomposed spectra K. The research results show that when the number of decomposed spectra K is 5, the identification accuracy for different sources of domestic sewage, surface water, and industrial wastewater is the highest, with an overall accuracy of 98.81%. Additionally, the performance of this method was validated by mixed water samples (combinations of rainwater and domestic sewage, rainwater and surface water, and rainwater and industrial wastewater). The results indicate that the accuracy of the proposed method in identifying the source of external water in rainwater reaches 98.99%, with detection time within 10 s. Therefore, the proposed method can become a potential approach for rapid identification and traceability analysis of external water in rainwater pipe networks.

Las percepciones de olvidos recurrentes o episodios de distracción en la vida diaria se denominan quejas subjetivas de memoria (QSM). Su naturaleza se ha estudiado ampliamente en adultos mayores, pero su importancia y relación con el rendimiento neurocognitivo no se han abordado por completo en adultos más jóvenes. Se han sugerido algunos rasgos psicológicos como posibles moderadores de la asociación entre el rendimiento de la memoria objetiva y subjetiva. El primer objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la correspondencia entre la percepción objetiva y subjetiva de los fallos de memoria en jóvenes. En segundo lugar, estudiamos si el rasgo psicológico del neuroticismo podría estar influyendo en esta relación. Para ello, medimos QSM, diferentes dominios cognitivos (memoria episódica y de trabajo y funciones ejecutivas) y neuroticismo en 80 hombres y mujeres jóvenes. Los resultados mostraron que solo la memoria episódica inmediata estaba estadísticamente relacionada con los QSM. Curiosamente, las relaciones negativas entre el rendimiento de la memoria objetiva y subjetiva solo aparecieron en participantes con mayor neuroticismo. Por lo tanto, las quejas de memoria reportadas por los jóvenes podrían reflejar un peor rendimiento de la memoria episódica inmediata, mientras que el neuroticismo jugaría un papel principal en la asociación entre los déficits de memoria y las QSM. Perceptions of recurrent forgetfulness or episodes of distraction in daily life are referred to as subjective memory complaints (SMCs). Their nature has been extensively studied in older adults, but their significance and relationship with neurocognitive performance have not been fully ad-dressed in younger adults. Some psychological traits have been suggested as possible moderators of the association between objective and subjective memory performance. The first aim of this study was to analyze the corre-spondence between the objective and subjective perception of memory failures in young people. Second, we studied whether the psychological trait of neuroticism could be influencing this relationship. Todo this, we measured SMCs, different cognitive domains (episodic and working memory and executive functions), and neuroticism in 80 young men and women. Results showed that only immediate episodic memory was statisti-cally related to SMCs. Interestingly, the negative relationships between ob-jective and subjective memory performance only appeared in participants with higher neuroticism. Thus, memory complaints reported by young people could reflect poorer immediate episodic memory performance, whereas neuroticism would play a main role in the association between memory deficits and SMCs. This study provides data that can help to bet-ter understand SMCs in young people.(AU)

INTRODUCTION: Sex hormones are important factors in maintaining brain function and acting as brain protectors. Recent research suggests that neuronal damage in brain aging may be linked to the methylation of the estrogen receptor α (ERα). However, the mechanism of Zuogui Pills (ZGW) in brain-aging ERα DNA methylation and neuronal repair remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: D-galactose-induced ovary removal mice were used as a model of aging. Changes in estrous cycle were detected in mice by vaginal cell smear. Animal behavior tests, including the Morris water maze (MWM) and new object recognition (NOR) test, were conducted. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Nissl-staining were carried out to assess hippocampal neurogenesis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed for 5- methylcytosine methylation levels, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blotting (WB) experiments were performed to assess ERα/DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) expression after ZGW treatment. Finally, bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP) analysis was performed to identify methylated differentially expressed estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene in D-gal-induced senescent neurons before and after ZGW treatment. RESULTS: We found that ERα methylation was involved in the delayed brain ageing process of ZGW. Mechanistically, ZGW can improve the learning and memory ability of brain-aging mice, reduce the expression of 5-methylcytosine (5-mc) in serum, increase the amount of ERα, inhibit the expression of DNMT1, and significantly reduce methylated expression of the ESRI gene. CONCLUSION: Our data suggested that ZGW slowed down D-gal-induced brain aging in mice, and these results showed that ZGW is beneficial for aging. It may be used for neuronal protection in aging.

ABSTRACT

Objective.With prolonged life expectancy, the incidence of memory deficits, especially in Alzheimer's disease (AD), has increased. Although multiple treatments have been evaluated, no promising treatment has been found to date. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the fornix area was explored as a possible treatment because the fornix is intimately connected to memory-related areas that are vulnerable in AD; however, a proper imaging biomarker for assessing the therapeutic efficiency of forniceal DBS in AD has not been established.Approach.This study assessed the efficacy and safety of DBS by estimating the optimal intersection volume between the volume of tissue activated and the fornix. Utilizing a gold-electroplating process, the microelectrode's surface area on the neural probe was increased, enhancing charge transfer performance within potential water window limits. Bilateral fornix implantation was conducted in triple-transgenic AD mice (3 × Tg-AD) and wild-type mice (strain: B6129SF1/J), with forniceal DBS administered exclusively to 3 × Tg-AD mice in the DBS-on group. Behavioral tasks, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were performed in all mice to assess the therapeutic efficacy of forniceal DBS.Main results.The results illustrated that memory deficits and increased anxiety-like behavior in 3 × Tg-AD mice were rescued by forniceal DBS. Furthermore, forniceal DBS positively altered DTI indices, such as increasing fractional anisotropy (FA) and decreasing mean diffusivity (MD), together with reducing microglial cell and astrocyte counts, suggesting a potential causal relationship between revised FA/MD and reduced cell counts in the anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, fornix, amygdala, and entorhinal cortex of 3 × Tg-AD mice following forniceal DBS.Significance.The efficacy of forniceal DBS in AD can be indicated by alterations in DTI-based biomarkers reflecting the decreased activation of glial cells, suggesting reduced neural inflammation as evidenced by improvements in memory and anxiety-like behavior.

ABSTRACT

Social animals make behavioural decisions based on local habitat and conspecifics, as well as memorized past experience (i.e. 'familiarity') with habitat and conspecifics. Here, we develop a conceptual and empirical understanding of how spatial and social familiarity fit within the spatial-social interface-a novel framework integrating the spatial and social components of animal behaviour. We conducted a multi-scale analysis of the movements of GPS-collared plains bison (Bison bison, n = 66) residing in and around Yellowstone National Park, USA. We found that both spatial and social familiarity mediate how individuals respond to their spatial and social environments. For instance, individuals with high spatial familiarity rely on their own knowledge as opposed to their conspecifics, and individuals with high social familiarity rely more strongly on the movement of conspecifics to guide their own movement. We also found that fine-scale spatial and social phenotypes often scale up to broad-scale phenotypes. For instance, bison that select more strongly to align with their nearest neighbour have larger home ranges. By integrating spatial and social familiarity into the spatial-social interface, we demonstrate the utility of the interface for testing hypotheses, while also highlighting the pervasive importance of cognitive mechanisms in animal behaviour. ABSTRACT

According to the information centre hypothesis (ICH), colonial species use social information in roosts to locate ephemeral resources. Validating the ICH necessitates showing that uninformed individuals follow informed ones to the new resource. However, following behaviour may not be essential when individuals have a good memory of the resources' locations. For instance, Egyptian fruit bats forage on spatially predictable trees, but some bear fruit at unpredictable times. These circumstances suggest an alternative ICH pathway in which bats learn when fruits emerge from social cues in the roost but then use spatial memory to locate them without following conspecifics. Here, using an unique field manipulation and high-frequency tracking data, we test for this alternative pathway: we introduced bats smeared with the fruit odour of the unpredictably fruiting Ficus sycomorus trees to the roost, when they bore no fruits, and then tracked the movement of conspecifics exposed to the manipulated social cue. As predicted, bats visited the F. sycomorus trees with significantly higher probabilities than during routine foraging trips (of >200 bats). Our results show how the integration of spatial memory and social cues leads to efficient resource tracking and highlight the value of using large movement datasets and field experiments in behavioural ecology. ABSTRACT

Observing others performing an action can lead to false memories of self-performance-the observation-inflation effect. Previous research has indicated that this phenomenon might impact the memory of actions in real-world interactions. However, whether direct observation without interaction can lead to observation inflation remains unclear. In Experiment 1, participants passively observed the experimenter performing actions live. In subsequent memory tests, they indeed reported false memories regarding their performances. Building on this, Experiment 2 investigated the causes of the observation-inflation effect induced by "real" actions. Participants underwent imitation-inhibition training with the individuals they observed previously. The results revealed that participants who completed imitation-inhibition training reported fewer false memories in memory tests than those who completed imitation training. These findings suggest that even passive observation of "real" actions can lead to observation inflation, and the simulation of others' actions by individuals may be a potential underlying cause of their occurrence in real-life situations.

EFL listening comprehension has been a stark challenge for language learners, but little is known about the combined effect of individual differences, such as working memory capacity, and metacognitive intervention. Thus, the present experimental study investigates the effect of metacognitive intervention on the listening performance and metacognitive awareness of high- and low-WMC EFL learners. For this purpose, Oxford Placement Tests were distributed among 120 male Iranian EFL learners, of which 94 were identified as intermediate. Then, backward visual digit span tests were administered to measure their working memory capacity. Based on the median of all scores, 80 learners were selected and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and two control groups each with 20 participants. Next, their performance on the International English Language Testing System and the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire was measured before and after the 8-session metacognitive intervention. Results showed that high-WMC experimental learners had a higher gain with a large effect size in terms of listening performance compared with all the other groups. In addition, the experimental group learners reported the significantly higher use of the metacognitive strategies with a moderate effect size. Interestingly, low-WMC learners' listening performance and metacognitive awareness also improved as a result of the intervention. Our findings bear pedagogical significance in that individual differences in WMC should be considered more in both EFL language classes and the future line of research involving the metacognitive intervention.

ABSTRACT

This paper reports a reassessment of published literature on the question of whether retrograde amnesia data from patients with severe trauma supports the idea that there is ongoing consolidation of long-lasting memories. That is, memory consolidation continues for decades with older memories being increasingly consolidated, and, thus, more protected from forgetting. Our analysis was limited to patients with specific traumas rather than neurodegenerative conditions that can be complicated by the additional presence of significant anterograde amnesia. These constraints were used because trauma patients have a definitive start to their amnesia allowing comparison of their memories before this event, unlike when there is an undefined amnesia onset. Our results revealed that the standard account of retrograde amnesia only fits part of the data, with more than half not conforming to this account. Specifically, damage to different brain areas was associated with different patterns of retrograde amnesia. Those cases where the standard retrograde amnesia account was held tended to involve damage to the hippocampus and temporal lobes, as expected. Future directions to better understand the influence of retrograde amnesia and memory consolidation are suggested.

ABSTRACT

Mystical-like states of consciousness may arise through means such as psychedelic substances, but may also occur unexpectedly during near-death experiences (NDEs). So far, research studies comparing experiences induced by serotonergic psychedelics and NDEs, along with their enduring effects, have employed between-subject designs, limiting direct comparisons. We present results from an online survey exploring the phenomenology, attribution of reality, psychological insights, and enduring effects of NDEs and psychedelic experiences (PEs) in individuals who have experienced both at some point during their lifetime. We used frequentist and Bayesian analyses to determine significant differences and overlaps (evidence for null hypotheses) between the two. Thirty-one adults reported having experienced both an NDE (i.e. NDE-C scale total score ≥27/80) and a PE (intake of lysergic acid diethylamide, psilocybin/mushrooms, ayahuasca, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, or mescaline). Results revealed areas of overlap between both experiences for phenomenology, attribution of reality, psychological insights, and enduring effects. A finer-grained analysis of the phenomenology revealed a significant overlap in mystical-like effects, while low-level phenomena (sensory effects) were significantly different, with NDEs displaying higher scores of disembodiment and PEs higher scores of visual imagery. This suggests psychedelics as a useful model for studying mystical-like effects induced by NDEs, while highlighting distinctions in sensory experiences.

Background: With the advent of electronic nicotine delivery systems, the use of nicotine and tobacco products (NTPs) among adolescents and young adults remains high in the US. Use of e-cigarettes additionally elevates the risk of problematic use of other substances like cannabis, which is often co-used with NTPs. However, their effects on brain health, particularly the hippocampus, and cognition during this neurodevelopmental period are poorly understood. Methods: Healthy late adolescents/young adults (N = 223) ages 16-22 completed a structural MRI to examine right and left hippocampal volumes. Memory was assessed with the NIH Toolbox Picture Sequence Memory Test (PSMT) and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). Cumulative 6-month NTP and cannabis episodes were assessed and modeled continuously on hippocampal volumes. Participants were then grouped based on 6-month NTP use to examine relationships with the hippocampus and memory: current users (CU) endorsed weekly or greater use; light/abstinent users (LU) endorsed less than weekly; and never users (NU). Results: NTP use predicted larger hippocampal volumes bilaterally while cannabis use had no impact nor interacted with NTP use. For memory, larger left hippocampal volumes were positively associated with PSMT performance, RAVLT total learning, short delay and long delay recall for the NU group. In contrast, there was a negative relationship between hippocampal volumes and performances for LU and CU groups. No differences were detected between NTP-using groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that the hippocampus is sensitive to NTP exposure during late adolescence/young adulthood and may alter typical hippocampal morphometry in addition to brain-behavior relationships underlying learning and memory processes.

Paraquat (PQ) is an herbicide toxin that induces injury in different organs. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of carvacrol were reported previously. The effects of carvacrol and pioglitazone (Pio) alone and their combination on inhaled PQ-induced systemic and lung oxidative stress and inflammation as well as behavioral changes were examined in rats. In this study, animals were exposed to saline (control [Ctrl]) or PQ (PQ groups) aerosols. PQ-exposed animals were treated with 0.03 mg/kg/day dexamethasone (Dexa), 20 and 80 mg/kg/day carvacrol (C-L and C-H), 5 mg/kg/day Pio, and Pio+C-L for 16 days. Inhaled PQ markedly enhanced total and differential white blood cell (WBC) counts, nitric oxide (NO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels but decreased catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and thiol levels both in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood and increased interferon-gamma (INF-γ) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in the BALF (p < 0.001 for all cases) except lymphocyte count in blood which was not significantly changed. The escape latency and traveled distance were increased in the PQ group. However, the time spent in the target quadrant in the Morris water maze (MWM) test and the duration of time latency in the dark room in the shuttle box test were reduced after receiving an electrical shock (p < 0.05-p < 0.001). Inhaled PQ-induced changes were significantly improved in carvacrol, Pio, Dexa, and especially in the combination of the Pio+C-L treated groups (p < 0.05-p < 0.001). Carvacrol and Pio improved PQ-induced changes similar to Dexa, but ameliorative effects produced by combination treatments of Pio+C-L were more prominent than Pio and C-L alone, suggesting a potentiating effect for the combination of the two agents.

Background: Many research laboratories have long-term repositories of cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), which are costly to maintain but are of uncertain utility for immunological studies after decades in storage. This study investigated preservation of cell surface phenotypes and in-vitro functional capacity of PBMC from viraemic HIV+ patients and healthy seronegative control subjects, after more than 20 years of cryopreservation. Methods: PBMC were assessed by 18-colour flow cytometry for major lymphocyte subsets within T, B, NK, and dendritic cells and monocytes. Markers of T-cell differentiation and activation were compared with original immunophenotyping performed in 1995/1996 on fresh blood at the time of collection. Functionality of PBMC was assessed by culture with influenza antigen or polyclonal T-cell activation, to measure upregulation of activation-induced CD25 and CD134 (OX40) on CD4 T cells and cytokine production at day 2, and proliferative CD25+ CD4 blasts at day 7. RNA was extracted from cultures containing proliferating CD4+ blast cells, and intracellular HIV RNA was measured using short amplicons for both the Double R and pol region pi code assays, whereas long 4-kbp amplicons were sequenced. Results: All major lymphocyte and T-cell subpopulations were conserved after long-term cryostorage, except for decreased proportions of activated CD38+HLA-DR+ CD4 and CD8 T cells in PBMC from HIV+ patients. Otherwise, differences in T-cell subpopulations between recent and long-term cryopreserved PBMC primarily reflected donor age-associated or HIV infection-associated effects on phenotypes. Proportions of naïve, memory, and effector subsets of T cells from thawed PBMC correlated with results from the original flow cytometric analysis of respective fresh blood samples. Antigen-specific and polyclonal T-cell responses were readily detected in cryopreserved PBMC from HIV+ patients and healthy control donors. Intracellular HIV RNA quantitation by pi code assay correlated with original plasma viral RNA load results. Full-length intracellular and supernatant-derived amplicons were generated from 5/12 donors, and sequences were ≥80% wild-type, consistent with replication competence. Conclusions: This unique study provides strong rationale and validity for using well-maintained biorepositories to support immunovirological research even decades after collection.

The current diagnostic criteria for the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) include the possibility to specify concomitant language difficulties. Purpose: Our main aim was to explore whether children with ASD-Level 1 (ASD-L1) present difficulties in the acquisition of structural language, as little work has been done in this regard so far. As a secondary aim we evaluated the degree to which the potential language impairment in ASD is directly associated with their social communication deficits or it represents a distinct deficit. Methods: To further clarify the nature and characteristics of putative language difficulties in ASD-L1, we evaluated language skills in 89 children and preadolescents diagnosed with ASD-L1, and a group of typically developing participants (TD). All of them were between 8 and 13 years old and had similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Results: Children with ASD-L1 obtained lower scores than those in TD group in repeating sentences, in finding the semantic relationships between words, and in applying word structure rules (morphology). Congruently, the core language standard score was lower in the ASD-L1 group, and the proportion of language delay was significantly higher in the ASD-L1 group than in the control group. Conclusion: Language scores were associated with autistic traits; thus, language performance in ASD-L1 is closely related to autistic symptoms. These results are discussed according to the literature on linguistic deficits in ASD-L1 and their relations with phonological working memory.

The Tactual Span assesses tactile working memory (WM) using both hands while applying forward and backward conditions. The study objectives were to validate a one-hand version of the Tactual Span and to evaluate WM laterality in the tactile modality. Of the 145 participants, 80 performed the Tactual Span with their right hand, and 65 performed it with their left hand. Moreover, all participants performed two span tasks in the visuo-spatial and auditory modalities, each encompassing forward and backward conditions. Results revealed adequate Cronbach's alpha values for each hand in both conditions of the Tactual Span, along with a positive correlation between forward and backward conditions in each hand. However, overall performance on the Tactual Span was poorer compared to performance on the Auditory and Visuo-spatial Spans. Furthermore, in the forward condition, there was a correlation between the Auditory Span and the Tactual Span, but only for the right hand. In the backward condition, the Auditory Span correlated with the Tactual Span in both hands. The findings indicate that there is no effect of hand laterality in tactile WM, showing the two hands are related to each other in their WM function. Additionally, the one-hand version of the Tactual Span is deemed useful for evaluating tactile WM and can therefore be used in empirical and clinical settings for neuropsychological assessment purposes.

ABSTRACT

A key question for understanding the function of the hippocampus in memory is how information is recalled from the hippocampus to the neocortex. This was investigated in a neuronal network model of the hippocampal system in which "What" and "Where" neuronal firing rate vectors were applied to separate neocortical modules, which then activated entorhinal cortex "What" and "Where" modules, then the dentate gyrus, then CA3, then CA1, then the entorhinal cortex, and then the backprojections to the neocortex. A rate model showed that the whole system could be trained to recall "Where" in the neocortex from "What" applied as a retrieval cue to the neocortex, and could in principle be trained up towards the theoretical capacity determined largely by the number of synapses onto any one neuron divided by the sparseness of the representation. The trained synaptic weights were then imported into an integrate-and-fire simulation of the same architecture, which showed that the time from presenting a retrieval cue to a neocortex module to recall the whole memory in the neocortex is approximately 100 ms. This is sufficiently fast for the backprojection synapses to be trained onto the still active neocortical neurons during storage of the episodic memory, and this is needed for recall to operate correctly to the neocortex. These simulations also showed that the long loop neocortex-hippocampus-neocortex that operates continuously in time may contribute to complete recall in the neocortex; but that this positive feedback long loop makes the whole dynamical system inherently liable to a pathological increase in neuronal activity. Important factors that contributed to stability included increased inhibition in CA3 and CA1 to keep the firing rates low; and temporal adaptation of the neuronal firing and of active synapses, which are proposed to make an important contribution to stabilizing runaway excitation in cortical circuits in the brain.

ABSTRACT

Brain entropy (BEN), which measures the amount of information in brain activity, provides a novel perspective for evaluating brain function. Recent studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that BEN during rest can help characterize brain function alterations in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, there is a lack of research on BEN using task-evoked fMRI to explore task-dependent cognitive deficits in SCZ. In this study, we evaluate whether the reduced working memory (WM) capacity in SCZ is possibly associated with dynamic changes in task BEN during tasks with high cognitive demands. We analyzed data from 15 patients with SCZ and 15 healthy controls (HC), calculating task BEN from their N-back task fMRI scans. We then examined correlations between task BEN values, clinical symptoms, 2-back task performance, and neuropsychological test scores. Patients with SCZ exhibited significantly reduced task BEN in the cerebellum, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, thalamus, and the middle and superior frontal gyrus (MFG and SFG) compared to HC. In HC, significant positive correlations were observed between task BEN and 2-back accuracy in several brain regions, including the MFG and SFG; such correlations were absent in patients with SCZ. Additionally, task BEN was negatively associated with scores for both positive and negative symptoms in areas including the parahippocampal gyrus among patients with SCZ. In conclusion, our findings indicate that a reduction in BEN within prefrontal and hippocampal regions during cognitively demanding tasks may serve as a neuroimaging marker for SCZ.

Memory impairment is a serious cognitive side effect of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the treatment of major depressive episodes (MDEs) and has garnered widespread attention in clinical practice, but its underlying evolution pattern during the course of ECT remains rarely understood in detail. Associative memory (AM) is a core indicator that reflects memory impairment in ECT. This study aimed to identify the dynamic trajectory of AM impairment and explore associated predictive factors. 405 intensive longitudinal AM data from 81 patients with MDE were collected at the baseline, after the first, third, fifth, and eighth ECT using five sets of face-cued word memory paradigms. Changes in AM score over time were analyzed using a linear mixed effects model. Trajectory subgroups and predictive factors were investigated using growth mixture model and logistic regression. AM score during ECT were significantly lower than at baseline, with the lowest scores observed after the eighth ECT session. Two trajectories of rapid (N = 56, 69.14%) and slow (N = 25, 30.86%) AM impairment were differentiated. Older female with lower education level were significant predictors contributing to more rapid memory impairment for ECT. The evolving pattern of associative memory impairment during ECT appears to occur early and worsen with subsequent treatment. This study may provide the important evidence understanding of the number effect of ECT sessions on memory impairment and suggest individual factors for predicting ECT memory outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Advancements in data science and assistive technologies have made invasive brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) increasingly viable for enhancing the quality of life in physically disabled individuals. Intracortical micro-electrode implants are a common choice for such a communication system due to their fine temporal and spatial resolution. The small size of these implants makes the implantation plan critical for the successful exfiltration of information, particularly when targeting representations of task goals that lack robust anatomical correlates. APPROACH: Working memory processes including encoding, retrieval, and maintenance are observed in many areas of the brain. Using human electrocorticography recordings during a working memory experiment, we provide proof that it is possible to localize cognitive activity associated with the task and to identify key locations involved with executive memory functions. Results. From the analysis, we could propose an optimal iBCI implant location with the desired features. The general approach is not limited to working memory but could also be used to map other goal-encoding factors such as movement intentions, decision-making, and visual-spatial attention. SIGNIFICANCE: Deciphering the intended action of a BCI user is a complex challenge that involves the extraction and integration of cognitive factors such as movement planning, working memory, visual spatial attention, and the decision state. Examining local field potentials from ECoG electrodes while participants engaged in tailored cognitive tasks can pinpoint location with valuable information related to anticipated actions. This manuscript demonstrates the feasibility of identifying electrodes involved in cognitive activity related to working memory during user engagement in the NBack task. Devoting time in meticulous preparation to identify the optimal brain regions for BCI implant locations will increase the likelihood of rich signal outcomes, thereby improving the overall BCI user experience. .
