ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Investigate the associations of ultra-processed foods (UPF) in healthful (hPDI) and unhealthful (uPDI) plant-based diets with all-cause mortality, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), and blue water consumption (BWC). METHODS: Analyses were based on 35,030 participants (20-70 years; 74% females) from the EPIC-NL cohort who were followed up from 1993 to 1997 through 2014. Plant-based diet indices (hPDI and uPDI) and UPF consumption were calculated from a validated FFQ, assessed at baseline. Cox proportional hazard and multiple linear regression models were used to estimate associations between combined quartiles of the PDI indices and UPF consumption. RESULTS: With lower hPDI and higher UPF diets as the reference, we observed the following. Risk estimates of all-cause mortality were 0.98 (95% CI: 0.83, 1.16) for lower UPF consumption, 0.86 (95% CI: 0.68, 1.08) for higher hPDI, and 0.78 (95% CI: 0.66, 0.89) for combined higher hPDI and lower UPF consumption. Results with the uPDI were inconclusive. Mean differences in GHGE and BWC were 1.4% (95% CI: 0.3, 2.4) and 1.6% (95% CI: -0.5, 3.7) for lower UPF consumption, -7.4% (95% CI: -8.6, -6.4) and 9.6% (95% CI: 7.2, 12.0) for higher hPDI, and - 6.8% (95% CI: -7.4, -6.1) and 13.1% (95% CI: 11.6, 14.8) for combined higher hPDI and lower UPF consumption. No apparent conflict between environmental impacts was observed for the uPDI; GHGE and BWC were lower for higher uPDI scores. CONCLUSION: Mortality risk and environmental impacts were mostly associated with the amount of plant-based foods and to a lesser extent UPF in the diet. Shifting to a more healthful plant-based diet could improve human health and reduce most aspects of environmental impact (GHGE, but not BWC) irrespective of UPF consumption.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Interest in plant-based eating has increased alongside increased variety and availability of highly processed plant-based meat and dairy alternatives. The impact of the shifting commercial landscape and public interest in plant-based eating on dietary intake is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine trends in the consumption and composition of plant-based diets in the United States adults. METHODS: Serial cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to assess trends in the proportion of United States adults aged ≥20 y consuming a plant-based diet (defined as ≥50% total protein from plants on a 24-h dietary recall) from 1999-2000 to 2017-March 2020 (n = 51,698). Trends in processing level (percentage energy intake from ultraprocessed foods) and diet quality [Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020 scores] were assessed in the subset of adults consuming plant-based diets (n = 8327). RESULTS: The proportion of United States adults consuming plant-based diets increased from 14.4% (95% CI: 12.9%, 16.0%) to 17.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 15.5%, 19.1%; P = 0.005 for trend). In all survey cycles, ultraprocessed foods accounted for the majority of energy intake, and ultraprocessed food intake in plant-based diets did not significantly change over time [50.7% kcal (95% CI: 47.3%, 54.1%) in 1999-2000 compared with 52.7% kcal (95% CI: 49.7%, 55.6%) in 2017-March 2020; P for trend = 0.34]. The quality of plant-based diets, measured by HEI-2020 scores, improved from 52.1 (95% CI: 49.7, 54.6) to 55.8 (95% CI: 54.1, 57.5; P for trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Between 1999 and March 2020, the proportion of United States adults consuming a plant-based diet increased. Among people consuming plant-based diets, ultraprocessed foods contributed most to energy intake and there was no sustained change in intake over time. The mean diet quality was low but improved modestly.

ABSTRACT

Our aim was to conduct an umbrella review of evidence from meta-analyses of observational studies investigating the link between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and human health outcomes. Using predefined evidence classification criteria, we evaluated evidence from 47 meta-analyses encompassing 22,055,269 individuals. Overall, 79% of these analyses indicated direct associations between greater sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and higher risks of adverse health outcomes. Convincing evidence (class I) supported direct associations between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and risks of depression, cardiovascular disease, nephrolithiasis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and higher uric acid concentrations. Highly suggestive evidence (class II) supported associations with risks of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and dental caries. Out of the remaining 40 meta-analyses, 29 were graded as suggestive or weak in the strength of evidence (classes III and IV), and 11 showed no evidence (class V). These findings inform and provide support for population-based and public health strategies aimed at reducing sugary drink consumption for improved health.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess and compare the retinal toxicity associated with silicone oil (SO) and perfluoropropane (C3F8) tamponade following vitreoretinal surgery for fresh rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), utilizing the office-based Diopsys® NOVA™ system for evaluation. METHODS: Patients who underwent vitreoretinal surgery for fresh RRD and had SO (group 1) or C3F8 (group 2) tamponade were included in a prospective analysis. Flicker full field electroretinography (ffERG) and pattern electroretinography (PERG) tests were performed at 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Postoperative best corrected visual acuity (logMAR) was significantly different in group 1 and group 2 patients, 0.48 ± 0.3 and 0.30 ± 0.2, respectively. No significant disparities were found in demographic variables. Flicker ffERG and PERG recordings revealed notable alterations in retinal function parameters in the group 1 compared to the group 2. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest a correlation between SO tamponade and retinal dysfunction, evidenced by office-based ERG measurements. The Diopsys® NOVA™ protocol offers clinical ease in assessing retinal function. Further controlled studies are essential to validate these findings and guide clinical practice effectively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Crossover studies can induce order effects, especially when they lack a washout period. OBJECTIVES: We performed secondary analyses comparing groups of subjects randomly assigned to different diet orders in 2 inpatient crossover studies originally designed to compare within-subject differences in ad libitum energy intake. One study compared minimally processed low-carbohydrate (LC) compared with low-fat (LF) diets, and the other matched macronutrients and compared minimally processed food (MPF) with ultraprocessed food (UPF) diets. METHODS: Diet order group comparisons of changes in body weight and body composition, and differences in energy expenditure and food intake were assessed over 4 wk in 20 adults randomly assigned to either the LC followed immediately by the LF diet (LC → LF) or the opposite order (LF → LC), and 20 adults randomly assigned to either the MPF followed by the UPF (MPF → UPF) diets or the opposite order (UPF → MPF). RESULTS: Subjects randomly assigned to LC → LF lost 2.9 ± 1.1 kg more body weight (P <0.001) and 1.5 ± 0.6 kg more body fat (P = 0.03) than the LF → LC group, likely because the LC → LF group consumed 921 ± 304 kcal/d less than the LF → LC group (P = 0.003). These energy intake differences were driven by the last 2 wk (-1610 ± 312 kcal/d; P < 0.0001), perhaps because of carryover effects of gut adaptations during the first 2 wk arising from large differences in the mass of food (1296 ± 215 g/d; P <0.00001) and fiber consumed (58 ± 6 g/d; P <0.00001). There were no significant diet order effects on energy intake, body weight, or body composition changes between UPF → MPF and MPF → UPF groups. CONCLUSIONS: Diet order significantly affected energy intake, body weight, and body fat in a 4-wk crossover inpatient diet study varying in macronutrients, but not in a similarly structured study varying in ultraprocessed foods. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03407053 and NCT03878108.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Increased consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) which have additives such as artificial colours, flavours and are usually high in salt, sugar, fats and specific preservatives, are associated with diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In India, there are no standard criteria for identifying UPFs using a classification system based on extent and purpose of industrial processing. Scientific literature on dietary intake of foods among Indian consumers classifies foods as unhealthy based on presence of excessive amounts of specific nutrients which makes it difficult to distinguish UPFs from other commercially available processed foods. METHODS: A literature review followed by an online grocery retailer scan for food label reading was conducted to map the types of UPFs in Indian food market and scrutinize their ingredient list for the presence of ultra-processed ingredients. All UPFs identified were randomly listed and then grouped into categories, followed by saliency analysis to understand preferred UPFs by consumers. Indian UPF categories were then finalized to inform a UPF screener. RESULTS: A lack of application of a uniform definition for UPFs in India was observed; hence descriptors such as junk-foods, fast-foods, ready-to-eat foods, instant-foods, processed-foods, packaged-foods, high-fat-sugar-and-salt foods were used for denoting UPFs. After initial scanning of such foods reported in literature based on standard definition of UPFs, an online grocery retailer scan of food labels for 375 brands (atleast 3 brands for each food item) confirmed 81 food items as UPFs. A range of packaged traditional recipes were also found to have UPF ingredients. Twenty three categories of UPFs were then developed and subjected to saliency analysis. Breads, chips and sugar-sweetened beverages (e.g. sodas and cold-drinks) were the most preferred UPFs while frozen ready-to-eat/cook foods (e.g. chicken nuggets and frozen kebabs) were least preferred. CONCLUSION: India needs to systematically apply a food classification system and define Indian food categories based on the level of industrial processing. Mapping of UPFs is the first step towards development of a quick screener that would generate UPF consumption data to inform clear policy guidelines and regulations around UPFs and address their impact on NCDs.

BACKGROUND: Consumption of ultra-processed food, which is manufactured food that is high in additives and sparse in intact foods, is adversely associated with cardiovascular health, primarily in non-US study populations. We aimed to estimate the association between ultra-processed food consumption and incident hypertension in middle-aged adults in the United States. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 8923 ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study participants who were hypertension free at baseline and had complete dietary, covariate, and hypertension data from visit 1 (1987-1989). Over a median (25th, 75th percentile) follow-up of 13 (6-21) years, 79% of participants developed hypertension. Participants in the highest quartile of ultra-processed food consumption had 15% higher risk of incident hypertension than those in the lowest quartile (hazard ratio [HR], 1.15 [95% CI, 1.08-1.23]). Participants in the highest quartile of consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, red and processed meat, and margarine had 16% (HR, 1.16 [95% CI, 1.08-1.24]; p-trend <0.001), 10% (HR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.03-1.19]; P trend = 0.005), and 6% (HR, 1.06 [95% CI, 0.99, 1.45]; P trend = 0.045) higher risk of incident hypertension, respectively, when compared with the lowest quartiles of consumption. Each additional serving of minimally or unprocessed food was associated with a 2% lower risk of incident hypertension (HR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.98, 0.99], P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: High consumption of ultra-processed foods, specifically of sugar-sweetened beverages, red and processed meat, and margarine, was associated with a higher incidence of hypertension, whereas minimally or unprocessed food consumption was associated with lower hypertension risk.

ABSTRACT

Revascularization surgery for the symptomatic hemisphere with hemodynamic impairment is effective for Moyamoya vasculopathy patients. However, careful patient selection is crucial and ideally supported by advanced quantitative hemodynamic imaging. Recently, blood oxygenation level-dependent cerebrovascular reactivity (BOLD-CVR) and quantitative magnetic resonance angiography with non-invasive optimal vessel analysis (qMRA-NOVA) have gained prominence in assessing these patients. This study aims to present the results of BOLD-CVR and qMRA-NOVA imaging along with the changes in cerebral hemodynamics and flow status following flow augmentation with superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass in our Moyamoya vasculopathy patient cohort. Symptomatic patients with Moyamoya vasculopathy treated at the Clinical Neuroscience Center of the University Hospital Zurich who underwent hemodynamic and flow imaging (BOLD-CVR and qMRA-NOVA) before and after bypass were included in the analysis. Reduced hemispheric volume flow rates, as well as impaired BOLD-CVR, were measured in all 12 patients with Moyamoya vasculopathy before STA-MCA bypass surgery. Following the surgical procedure, post-operative BOLD-CVR demonstrated a non-significant increase in BOLD-CVR values within the revascularized, symptomatic middle cerebral artery territory and cerebral hemisphere. The results of the statistical tests should be viewed as indicative due to the small sample size. Additionally, post-operative qMRA-NOVA revealed a significant improvement in the hemispheric volume flow rate of the affected hemisphere due to the additional bypass flow rate. Our findings affirm the presence of hemodynamic and flow impairments in the symptomatic hemisphere of the Moyamoya vasculopathy patients. Bypass surgery proves effective in improving both BOLD-CVR impairment and the hemispheric volume flow rate in our patient cohort.

ABSTRACT

The genome contains numerous regulatory elements that may undergo complex interactions and contribute to the establishment, maintenance, and change of cellular identity. Three-dimensional genome organization can be explored with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) at the single-cell level, but the detection of small genomic loci remains challenging. Here, we provide a rapid and simple protocol for the generation of bright FISH probes suited for the detection of small genomic elements. We systematically optimized probe design and synthesis, screened polymerases for their ability to incorporate dye-labeled nucleotides, and streamlined purification conditions to yield nanoscopy-compatible oligonucleotides with dyes in variable arrays (NOVA probes). With these probes, we detect genomic loci ranging from genome-wide repetitive regions down to non-repetitive loci below the kilobase scale. In conclusion, we introduce a simple workflow to generate densely labeled oligonucleotide pools that facilitate detection and nanoscopic measurements of small genomic elements in single cells.

ABSTRACT

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Understanding the impact of the overall construct of ultra-processed foods on diabetes risk can inform dietary approaches to diabetes prevention. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between ultra-processed food consumption and risk of diabetes in a community-based cohort of middle-aged adults in the USA. We hypothesised that a higher intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with a higher risk of incident diabetes. METHODS: The study included 13,172 participants without diabetes at baseline (1987-1989) in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Dietary intake was assessed with a 66-item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire, and foods were categorised by processing level using the Nova classification system. Ultra-processed food was analysed categorically (quartiles of energy-adjusted intake) and continuously (per one additional serving/day). We used Cox regression to evaluate the association of ultra-processed food intake with risk of diabetes with adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, total energy intake, health behaviours and clinical factors. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 21 years, there were 4539 cases of incident diabetes. Participants in the highest quartile of ultra-processed food intake (8.4 servings/day on average) had a significantly higher risk of diabetes (HR 1.13; 95% CI 1.03, 1.23) compared with participants in the lowest quartile of intake after adjustment for sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical factors. Each additional serving of ultra-processed food consumed daily was associated with a 2% higher risk of diabetes (HR 1.02; 95% CI 1.00, 1.04). Highest quartile consumption of certain ultra-processed food groups, including sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages, ultra-processed meats and sugary snacks, was associated with a 29%, 21% and 16% higher risk of diabetes, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: We found that a higher intake of ultra-processed food was associated with higher risk of incident diabetes, particularly sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages, ultra-processed meats and sugary snacks. Our findings suggest interventions reducing ultra-processed food consumption and specific food groups may be an effective strategy for diabetes prevention.

Introduction: Frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) during pregnancy is linked to excess intake of added sugar, fat, and sodium and inadequacy of several micronutrients. Diet quality during pregnancy should be maximized as inadequate levels of key nutrients and excessive intake of energy and added sugar might influence mother-child health. We aimed to estimate the contribution (% of total calories) of ultra-processed products to the total energy intake by pre-gestational body mass index (BMI) categories and Hb status during pregnancy in participants from the MAS-Lactancia Cohort. Methods: Pre-gestational weight, hemoglobin levels, 24-h dietary intake recall interviews, and sociodemographic data were collected during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Reported consumed foods were categorized using the NOVA classification, and the contribution of calories from each NOVA category was estimated using the Mexican Food Database. We estimated medians and interquartile ranges (p25 and p75) for dietary intake and energy contributions. The comparison of intake between the second and third trimesters was done using the Wilcoxon test. In addition, a quantile regression model with an interaction between pre-gestational BMI and Hb levels status in tertiles over the percentage of energy from UPFs was adjusted by age and socioeconomic status. Results: The contribution to total energy intake from UPFs was 27.4% in the second trimester and 27% in the third trimester (with no statistical difference). The percentage of energy intake from UPFs was higher in women who started pregnancy with obesity and presented the lowest levels of Hb (1st tertile), 23.1, 35.8, and 44.7% for the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles, respectively, compared to those with normal BMI and the highest tertile of Hb levels: 18, 29.0, and 38.6% for the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, UPF intake in pregnant women is similar to the general population and was higher for those with pre-gestational obesity and the lowest tertile of Hb levels. UPF contributes also to sugar, saturated fat, and sodium, which may adversely affect the health of mothers and their offspring.

AIM: To modify the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating to account for ultra-processing and compare the alignment of the modified ratings with NOVA classifications and the current Australian Dietary Guidelines classifications of core (recommended foods) and discretionary (foods to limit). METHODS: Data was cross-sectionally analysed for 25 486 products. Four approaches were compared to the original Health Star Rating: (1) five 'negative' points added to ultra-processed products (modification 1; inclusion approach); (2) ultra-processed products restricted to a maximum of 3.0 Health Stars (modification 2; capping approach); (3 and 4) same approach used for modifications 1 and 2 but only applied to products that already exceeded 10 'negative' points from existing Health Star Rating attributes (modifications 3 and 4, respectively; hybrid approaches). Alignment occurred when products (i) received <3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA group 4 (for NOVA comparison) or discretionary (for Dietary Guidelines comparison), or (ii) received ≥3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA groups 1-3 or core. RESULTS: All Health Star Rating modifications resulted in greater alignment with NOVA (ranging from 69% to 88%) compared to the original Health Star Rating (66%). None of the modifications resulted in greater alignment to the Dietary Guidelines classifications overall (69% to 76%, compared with 77% for the original Health Star Rating), but alignment varied considerably by food category. CONCLUSIONS: If ultra-processing were incorporated into the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating, consideration of ultra-processing within the broader dietary guidance framework would be essential to ensure coherent dietary messaging to Australians.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated various determinants of mental disorders. Several behavioral changes were observed given this increase, including harmful health consequences, such as excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). To assess this relationship, we investigated the meditational role of symptoms of mental disorders (anxiety and depression) in the association between stress resulting from social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic and the consumption of UPFs in 3884 Brazilian public employees in a supplementary study of the ELSA-Brasil study. Structural equation models (SEMs) were estimated to assess the direct and indirect effects mediated by symptoms of mental disorders. The results suggested a significant and positive mediational effect of the symptoms of mental disorders on the association between the stress resulting from social distancing and the consumption of UPFs. These findings contribute to informing the need for policies and early interventions in potentially stressful situations, with a focus on the promotion of mental health, and may thus help prevent or reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods.

ABSTRACT

Background: The order Isopoda Latreille, 1816 consists of species occurring in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments. In the Southern Ocean (SO), this group is amongst the most speciose and occur at all depths. Isopoda biogeography, despite being studied since the first Antarctic expeditions, is still poorly known from a geographical point of view and shows large occurrence gaps for some groups in specific sectors of the SO. In this paper, we update the isopod checklists of the Ross Sea (RS) and of some peri-Antarctic areas, such as the South Orkney Islands (SOI) and the South Sandwich Islands (SSI), based on the study of museum vouchers curated by the Italian National Antarctic Museum (MNA, Section of Genoa). New information: A total of 279 MNA samples from 15 different expeditions were studied. From this material, consisting of 419 specimens, 41 accepted species distributed in 24 families and 51 genera were identified. Comparing this newly-obtained information with the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) and OBIS (Ocean Biodiversity Information System) portal, 15 species are here reported for the first time in the Ross Sea, with five new records in the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area. All records are new for the Terra Nova Bay area, for which a checklist of this group has never been produced before.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine the association between health vulnerability and food consumption according to the NOVA classification within primary care in a major Brazilian city. A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults over 20 years old. These participants were part of a representative sample from the Health Academy Program (PAS) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. We evaluated socio-demographic variables, self-reported illnesses, perceived health and quality of life, and the length of participation in PAS. Health vulnerability was gauged through the Health Vulnerability Index (HVI), which is calculated for each census sector and classified as low, medium, and high/very high. On the other hand, food consumption was determined by evaluating the average consumption described in a 24 h diet recall (24HR) and categorizing it under the NOVA classification: culinary preparations, processed foods, and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The average calorie intake was 1429.7 kcal, primarily from culinary preparations (61.6%) and UPFs (27.4%). After adjustments, individuals residing in high/very high-HVI areas consumed more culinary preparations (ß = 2.7; 95%CI: 4.7; 0.7) and fewer UPFs (ß = -2.7; 95%CI: -4.7; -0.7) compared to those from low-vulnerability areas. PAS participants residing in more vulnerable areas reported healthier dietary habits, consuming more homecooked meals and fewer UPFs. These findings underscore the importance of concentrating efforts on promoting and preserving healthy eating habits and emphasizing the value of home cooking in the most vulnerable regions.

ABSTRACT

Ultraprocessed foods (UPF) consumption is associated with excess adiposity in adults, but this linkage remains unclear among children and adolescents. The present systematic review sought to address this research gap. Publications up to November 2023 were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Outcomes included overweight/obesity anthropometric and body composition indicators; the exposure was UPF consumption based on the NOVA classification system. The review included 23 studies (i.e., 8 cohort and 15 cross-sectional); approximately half were carried out in Brazil. Inconclusive and heterogeneous evidence exists as few cohort studies found positive/mixed associations between UPF consumption and excess adiposity in pediatric populations, whereas most cross-sectional studies reported null associations. Such inconsistencies may be attributed to underlying methodological issues, especially heterogeneity in the outcomes assessed and UPF consumption operationalization and/or categorization. Future studies should adopt longitudinal designs with sufficiently extended follow-up periods, account for relevant confounding factors, employ validated and standardized measurement tools to assess dietary exposure, ensure consistent operationalization of variables, and encompass diverse geographic contexts. Ultimately, strengthening the quality of existing research evidence may better inform current and forthcoming policy and practice interventions aimed at mitigating the increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity in childhood and across the life course.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Following NOVA (part 1) and the approval of the subcutaneous (SC) route of administration of natalizumab by the European Medicines Agency, an extension phase of the NOVA phase IIIb study (part 2) was initiated to collect patient preference data for SC versus intravenous (IV) dosing in patients receiving every-6-week (Q6W) dosing of natalizumab. This study was performed to evaluate patient preference for SC versus IV natalizumab administration and explore the efficacy, safety, and pharmacology characteristics of both routes of administration. METHODS: In part 2, participants received natalizumab (Tysabri®) 300 mg via IV infusion Q6W for 36 weeks and then were randomized to 48 weeks of crossover treatment (24 weeks SC Q6W and 24 weeks IV Q6W, or vice versa). The primary endpoint was the proportion of participants who indicated a preference for natalizumab SC administration on the Patient Preference Questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 153 participants were randomized in NOVA part 2. Of 123 with patient preference data, 108 (87.8%) preferred the SC route of administration for natalizumab over the IV route; 102 (82.9%) specified "requires less time in the clinic" as the reason for the SC preference. CONCLUSION: In NOVA (part 2), most participants on Q6W dosing of natalizumab preferred SC administration versus IV administration. CLINICALTRIALS: GOV: NCT03689972. INFOGRAPHIC.

ABSTRACT

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are foods that are industrially processed and are often pre-packaged, convenient, energy-dense, and nutrient-poor. UPFs are widespread in the current Western diet and their proposed contribution to non-communicable diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease is supported by numerous studies. UPFs are hypothesized to affect the body in multiple ways, including by inducing changes in the gut microbiome. This review summarizes the available research on the effect of UPFs on the gut microbiome. We also review current usage of the NOVA food classification system in randomized controlled trials and observational studies and how its implementation effects UPF research. Despite some differences in methodology between studies, results often associate UPF consumption with a number of negative health consequences. There are attempts to standardize a UPF classification system; however, reaching and implementing a consensus is difficult. Future studies focusing on the mechanisms by which UPFs effect the body, including through the microbiome and metabolome, will be essential to refine our understanding of the effects of UPFs on human health.

Background: Wildfires have become increasingly prevalent in various regions, resulting in substantial environmental and psychological consequences that have garnered increasing attention. Objective: This study aims to examine the prevalence of likely Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and explore the determinants of likely GAD during the wildfires in Alberta and Nova Scotia. Methods: Data were collected online through a cross-sectional survey from 14 May-23 June 2023. Alberta and Nova Scotia participants self-subscribed to the program by texting 'HopeAB' or 'HopeNS' to a short code, respectively. The GAD-7-validated tool was used to collect information on likely GAD. Results: This study included 298 respondents while one hundred and twelve respondents lived in a region of Alberta/Nova Scotia affected by the wildfires (37.7%). The prevalence of likely GAD among the respondents was 41.9%. Respondents who lived in a region of Alberta/Nova Scotia recently impacted by the wildfires were twice as likely to experience GAD symptoms (OR = 2.4; 95% C.I. 1.3-4.3). Conclusions: The study's identification of a statistically significant relationship between residing in a wildfire-impacted region and likely GAD shows the association between environmental and psychological well-being. However, the relatively small sample size and self-reported assessment of GAD symptoms may limit the generalizability of the findings. Further research involving a larger sample size delving into potential predictors could facilitate strategies for mitigating the mental health consequences of natural disasters.

We investigated the recent spatial variation in the mesozooplankton community on the broad shelf of the RSR MPA during the bloom season. The mesozooplankton community was geographically divided into three regions: the Terra Nova Bay polynya, the Ross Sea polynya, and the marginal polynya. Larval euphausiids were dominant in the two polynya regions, whereas copepods were predominant in the marginal polynya region. Salinity, sea ice, and dissolved oxygen related to the different water mass compositions were the most significant factors distinguishing the mesozooplankton community. The key environmental variable separating the three groups was salinity. In accordance with the relatively high mesozooplankton abundance in the polynya regions, the occurrence and size of the polynyas in the December Ross Sea are thought to affect the spatial distribution of mesozooplankton. Consequently, this study indicates that two polynyas in the Ross Sea are vital habitats for krill during summer. Our observation results provide fundamental information for evaluating marine ecosystems and establishing a management plan for the RSR MPA.
