ABSTRACT

The prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is 4 to 10% among people with diabetes mellitus. DFUs are associated with increased morbidity and mortality as well as reduced quality of life and have a significant impact on overall healthcare expenditure. The main predisposing factors for DFU are diabetic neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and trauma. The fact that a range of tests can be used to identify patients at risk for DFU often causes confusion among practitioners regarding which screening tests should be implemented in clinical practice. Herein we sought to determine whether tests of somatic nerve function, such as pinprick sensation, thermal (cold/hot) test, ankle reflexes, vibration perception, 10-g monofilament, Ipswich touch test, neuropathy disability score, and nerve conduction studies, predict the development of DFUs. In addition, we examined whether sudomotor function screening tests, such as Neuropad, sympathetic skin response, and other tests, such as elevated plantar pressure or temperature measurements, can be used for DFU screening. If not treated properly, DFUs can have serious consequences, including amputation, early detection and treatment are vital for patient outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Background: With the advent of new media technology, WeChat, as China's largest social networking platform, has significantly impacted people's lives. Growing concerns exist about social media usage, particularly regarding mental health issues stemming from problematic smartphone use. However, limited research has explored the relationship between social media usage and mental health among older adults in China, particularly the mechanisms influencing this relationship. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between excessive WeChat use and loneliness among older adults, examining the mediating roles of sensation seeking and fear of missing out (FoMO). Methods: To clarify the intermediary role of sensation seeking and FoMO in the relationship between elderly loneliness and problematic phone use, this study employed the loneliness scale, brief sensation seeking scale, the scale of FoMO and WeChat overuse scale in a questionnaire survey on the Chinese elderly aged 55 to 89 (N=913). A chained mediation model was constructed, with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and mediation effect tests performed. Results: The results indicate that the relationship between loneliness and excessive WeChat use among Chinese elderly is mediated by sensation seeking and FoMO. Conclusion: The findings reveal that loneliness, sensation seeking and FoMO and problematic mobile phone use (WeChat) are interconnected; (ii) sensation seeking and FoMO are the two important intermediary mechanisms between loneliness and problematic mobile phone use; and (iii) sensation seeking and FoMO can act as mediators in the relationship between loneliness and problematic mobile phone use among the elderly. In the difference test of demographic variables, it was found that women had more WeChat overuse behavior than men, and urban residents demonstrated significantly higher levels of overuse than their township residents. The study has revealed the psychological mechanism between loneliness and problematic mobile phone use among the elderly, which provides guiding suggestions for the prevention and intervention of such behaviors in the elderly.

ABSTRACT

Background: The present study aims to determine the effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on neuro-sensory disturbance after orthognathic surgery. Materials and methods: In a randomized clinical trial, the participants via split-mouth sampling were randomly divided into two intervention (n=27) and control (n=27) groups. In the intervention group, participants received TENS physiotherapy. TENS physiotherapy was performed on the day after surgery, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after surgery, along with prescriptions for the use of painkillers. On the control group, no physical therapy was performed and the patients only used painkillers (immediately after the operation). Paresthesia was evaluated using the 2-point discrimination (TPD) test and the semi-quantitative sensory-neural disorders test called brush stroke 6 months after the surgical procedures. Self-reported sensory-neural disorders were measured and reported for each patient before and 6 months after surgery using the visual analog scale (VAS). Results: A total of 54 patients participated in this study. The mean TPD score in the TENS group and the control group 6 months after the operation were 5.76 (SD=0.73) and 6.14 (SD=0.54), respectively (P=0.003). The mean VAS score in the TENS group and the control group 6 months after the operation was 6.48 (SD=0.50) and 5.80 (SD=0.63), respectively (P=0.005). Also, 66.7 and 38.9% in the TENS and control groups, respectively, performed the brush stroke test correctly (P=0.007). Conclusion: In sum, the benefits of TENS physiotherapy can be effective in reducing complications such as pain in dental surgery treatments or orthognathic surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Radial forearm free flap phalloplasty (RFFF) is a set of complex reconstructive procedures aimed at creating an aesthetic and functional penis in transgender patients. Sensory recovery in the neophallus and donor site is crucial for optimizing outcomes, but the few prior studies that exist assess neophallus sensation at limited locations and time points. The purpose of this study was to prospectively quantify sensory outcomes in the neophallus and donor site following RFFF phalloplasty. METHODS: Sensation testing occurred prospectively over February 2019-January 2021 on Stage 1 RFFF phalloplasty patients using the Pressure Specified Sensory Device (PSSD). On the neophallus, one-point discrimination (1PS) pressure threshold and lengthwise sensory recovery were measured at six circumferential locations proximally to distally. On the donor site, 1PS was measured at three locations on the donor hand. RESULTS: Nineteen patients were included (average age 34.0 years old, range 18-53 years). Among patients that received neophallus testing (n = 13), eight had at least two follow-up appointments. Six of these patients had sensation as of their most recent measurement (75.0%), with an average of 73 days to regain sensation. There was a significantly greater proportion of patients with sensation at the right ventral (80.0% after 3 months vs. 11.1%-60.0% before 3 months, p = 0.024) and right lateral (100.0% after 3 months vs. 11.1%-60.0% before 3 months, p = 0.004) aspects of the neophallus over time. Pressure required to elicit sensation decreased by 18.0% from 1 week-1 month postoperatively to 3-7.7 months postoperatively in the right ventral neophallus (96.2 g/mm2 ± 11.3 g/mm2 to 56.6 ± 39.9 g/mm2, p = 0.037). Among patients that received donor site testing (n = 11), mixed effects regression analysis with random intercepts demonstrated significant changes in the thumb (3.4 g/mm2 ± 1.4 g/mm2, p < 0.05) and webspace (13.5 g/mm2 ± 4.9 g/mm2, p < 0.01) that returned to baseline at 3 months postoperatively (1.7 g/mm2 ± 1.0 g/mm2, p > 0.05, and 2.3 g/mm2 ± 4.0 g/mm2, p > 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION: This pilot study demonstrates that quantitative sensory testing can be used to monitor post-phalloplasty sensory changes. Recovery was significantly associated with contralateral (i.e, right side in a left forearm RFF) aspects of the neophallus, suggesting a possible pattern of circumferential sensory innervation via RFFF sensory nerves. Future studies with a larger sample size and longer follow-ups are necessary to fully characterize sensory recovery in phalloplasty patients.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to understand the role of "dominance" definitions in the results of TDS applied to consumers. This study compared two temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) approaches - TDS-I - that attracts the most attention and TDS-II - most intense/strongest sensation - in the context of evaluating artisanal Minas cheeses from the Serra da Canastra and chocolate with different cocoa concentrations samples. TDS curves were constructed and a trajectory-based principal component analysis (PCA) was performed dominance rates at ten equally spaced time points. Additionally, difference curves, multiple factor analysis (MFA) and regression vector coefficient (RV coefficient) were performed to compare the two approaches. The findings showed that the two approaches produced similar results, suggesting that consumers interpret the terms dominant and intense in a similar way during TDS evaluations, the results were even closer at the chocolate study than at the cheese study. However, in both approaches were observed low dominance rates and differences between the sensation perception time, mainly in the evaluation of cheese flavor. This variability may be attributed to the complexity of the cheese's flavor and the varied interpretations of dominance among evaluators. Despite these differences, the approaches showed similar characterizations across the same samples, demonstrating high reproducibility and a strong ability to differentiate between samples. This study demonstrates that the choice between the terms dominant (which captures more attention) or intense (stronger) to guide consumers in performing the sensory test does not significantly influence the results. Consequently, it is possible to adopt greater freedom and flexibility in the terminology used to instruct participants in conducting the test.

ABSTRACT

It is unknown how the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment markers-negative affect, sensation seeking, and executive function-contribute to substance use development. This study examined whether associations of negative affect and sensation seeking with substance use vary by executive function. Participants were 167 adolescents (47% female) who participated annually for four years (Mage = 14.07, SDage = 0.54 at Time 1). There were within-person bidirectional associations between higher negative affect and higher substance use for adolescents with lower executive function. Adolescents with higher sensation seeking at age 14 exhibited increasing substance use trajectories from age 14 to 17, regardless of executive function level. Negative affect and substance use influence each other within individuals, whereas sensation seeking predicts substance use between individuals.

ABSTRACT

Female development includes significant morphological changes across the breast. Yet, whether differences in breast surface area (BrSA) modify breast skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity at rest and after exercise in the heat remain unclear. We investigated the relationship between BrSA and skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity in 20 young to middle-aged women (27 ± 8 years of age) of varying breast sizes (BrSA range: 147-502 cm2) at rest and after a submaximal run in a warm climatic chamber (32 C ${\mathrm{C}}$  ±  0 . 6 C ; ${\mathrm{0}}{\mathrm{.6C;}}$ 53% ± 1.7% relative humidity). Skin stiffness above and below the nipple and tactile sensitivity from the nipple down were measured. Associations between BrSA and both skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity at rest were determined via correlation analyses. Effects of exercise and test site were assessed by a two-way ANOVA. Skin stiffness was positively correlated with BrSA 3 cm above the areola edge (r = 0.61, P = 0.005) and at the superior areola border (r = 0.54, P = 0.016), but not below the nipple (P > 0.05). The area 3 cm below the areola was also significantly stiffer than all other test sites (P < 0.043). Tactile sensitivity did not vary with BrSA (P > 0.09), but it varied across the breast (i.e., the area 3 cm below the areola was more sensitive than the inferior areola edge; P = 0.018). Skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity across the breast decreased after exercise by ∼37% (P < 0.001) and ∼45% (P = 0.008), respectively. These findings expand our fundamental understanding of the mechanosensory properties of the female breast, and they could help to inform sportswear innovation to better meet the support needs of women of different breast sizes at rest and following exercise.

ABSTRACT

Dysphagia is common in motor neurone disease (MND) and associated with negative health and psychosocial outcomes. Although largely considered a motor disease, a growing body of evidence suggests that MND can also affect the sensory system. As intact sensation is vital for safe swallowing, and sensory changes can influence the clinical management of dysphagia in people living with MND, this review evaluated and summarised the current evidence for sensory changes related to swallowing in MND. Of 3,481 articles originally identified, 29 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 20 studies reported sensory changes, which included laryngeal sensation, taste, gag reflex, cough reflex, tongue sensation, smell, palatal and pharyngeal sensation, silent aspiration, and undefined sensation of the swallowing mechanism. Sensory changes were either described as decreased (n = 16) or heightened (n = 4). In the remaining nine studies, sensory function was reported as unaffected. The presence of changes to sensory function related to swallowing in MND remains inconclusive, although an increasing number of studies report sensory changes in some sensory domains. Future research is needed to evaluate the prevalence of sensory changes in MND and how such changes may influence dysphagia and its management.

ABSTRACT

This study explored subjective responses towards various environmental quality parameters. It would be helpful to approach an overall comfort improvement relating to physics. In order to investigate the combined effects of sound, light and heat on the overall comfort of pedestrians, which could be evaluated by overall comfort vote, two residential areas in Yubei District, Chongqing (a Cfa city in China) were selected for field measurements and questionnaires. Three were three key findings were concluded based on subjective responses to environmental parameters via multiple linear regression. First, the average outdoor neutral temperature, mean neutral sound level and neutral illumination intensity were determined to be 26.6 °C (determined by physiologically equivalent temperature), 56.5 dBA (determined by A-weighted equivalent continuous sound level) and 21.4 klx (determined by LUX), respectively. Second, considering the effects of both physiology and psychology, thermal perceptions varied for acoustic and light environments. Residents partially had lower neutral temperatures at the noisy condition. Third, environmental quality factors had a significant effect on overall comfort. Positive correlation between physiologically equivalent temperature and overall comfort vote was found (sig < 0.000); while the effects of sound pressure and light intensity were not always significant. Hence, thermal stress played a significant role in people's overall comfort. This study has explored the effects of three environment quality parameters on human perceptions. It provided better understanding against dwellers' feelings under complex circumstances. Future urban design and planning works should consider the cooling factors regarding contextual acoustical and visual environments.

BACKGROUND: While some individuals engage in recreational pornography use (PU), others may develop an uncontrolled pattern of use termed problematic pornography use (PPU). PPU is characterized by persistent, excessive, or compulsive engagement with pornographic content, despite distress and adverse consequences. Impulsivity has been identified as a factor associated with PU and PPU. AIM: The present meta-analysis aims to sum up the existing research on the relationship between impulsivity and PU/PPU and investigate whether age and gender could moderate this relationship. METHODS: A keyword-based systematic literature search was performed to identify articles that assessed PU/PPU and impulsivity. Extracted correlations were converted into Fisher's Z. Meta-regression analyses were also performed. Publication bias was assessed by Egger's regression intercept. OUTCOMES: Outcomes included general impulsivity and its dimensions (ie, negative and positive urgency, lack of premeditation and perseverance), sensation seeking, PU, and PPU. RESULTS: Meta-analytic results of the random effects model showed a significant positive correlation between impulsivity as total score and PU (n = 1504, k = 4, Fisher's Z = 0.21, P < .001) and PPU (n = 20174, k = 13, Fisher's Z = 0.17, P < .001). Significant and positive associations were also found between sensation seeking and PU (n = 11707, k = 11, Fisher's Z = 0.14, P < .001) and PPU (n = 20152, k = 9, Fisher's Z = 0.06, P < .001). Concerning the relationship between PPU and different dimensions of impulsivity, almost all the associations were significant and positive. The dimension of positive urgency and attentional and nonplanning impulsivity showed the strongest association. Age (ß = -0.50, Q = 101.26, df = 11, P < .001) and gender (female = 1; ß = -0.46, Q = 102.54, df = 12, P < .001) moderated the association between general impulsivity and PPU. No risk of publication bias emerged. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Prevention programs of PPU should focus on impulsivity and certain key dimensions (eg, positive urgency, attentional and nonplanning impulsivity) and be tailored to individual impulsivity profiles, considering age and gender differences. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: The primary strength of this meta-analysis is that it considers various conceptualizations of impulsivity. However, the results are to be interpreted with caution since >30% of relevant studies had to be excluded because information could not be gathered from the study authors. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that general impulsivity is linked to PU and PPU and that specific dimensions of impulsivity (ie, attentional impulsivity, nonplanning impulsivity, and positive urgency) can serve as risk factors for PPU.

Thermal comfort in an office impacts physical health, stress, and productivity. Humidity affects thermal comfort; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study assessed the influence of humidity on body temperature, thermal comfort, stress, and their relationship in working individuals. Thirteen participants performed three sets of 20-min calculation tasks followed by a 10-min rest in 26 °C or 33 °C with relative humidity (RH) of 30 % or 60 %. Core body temperature (Tcore), mean skin surface temperature (Tskin), and electrocardiogram were continuously recorded. Subjective thermal sensations and comfort were assessed with visual analog scales. Stress level was estimated based on α-amylase activity and immunoglobulin A level in saliva and heart rate variability. Mean Tskin and Tcore elevated at 33 °C with 60 % RH, where warm sensation and thermal discomfort also increased. Heart rate variability reflecting parasympathetic nerve activity decreased. There was a negative linear relationship between weighted body temperature and thermal comfort. However, thermal discomfort was augmented at a given weighted body temperature at 60 % RH. Thus, under indoor working conditions, high humidity may augment thermal discomfort and become a stress factor. Increases in Tskin and Tcore are involved in the mechanism, alongside other factors.

ABSTRACT

Reproductive behaviors differ across species, but the mechanisms that control variation in mating and parental care systems remain unclear. In many animal species, pheromones guide mating and parental care. However, it is not well understood how vertebrate pheromone signaling evolution can lead to new reproductive behavior strategies. In fishes, prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) drives mating and reproductive pheromone signaling in fertile females, but this pheromonal activity appears restricted to specific lineages, and it remains unknown how a female fertility pheromone is sensed for most fish species. Here, we utilize single-cell transcriptomics and CRISPR gene editing in a cichlid fish model to identify and test the roles of key genes involved in olfactory sensing of reproductive cues. We find that a pheromone receptor, Or113a, detects fertile cichlid females and thereby promotes male attraction and mating behavior, sensing a ligand other than PGF2α. Furthermore, while cichlid fishes exhibit extensive parental care, for most species, care is provided solely by females. We find that males initiate mouthbrooding parental care if they have disrupted signaling in ciliated sensory neurons due to cnga2b mutation or if or113a is inactivated. Together, these results show that distinct mechanisms of pheromonal signaling drive reproductive behaviors across taxa. Additionally, these findings indicate that a single pheromone receptor has gained a novel role in behavior regulation, driving avoidance of paternal care among haplochromine cichlid fishes. Lastly, a sexually dimorphic, evolutionarily derived parental behavior is controlled by central circuits present in both sexes, while olfactory signals gate this behavior in a sex-specific manner.

ABSTRACT

Tactile and pain perception are essential for biological skin to interact with the external environment. This complex interplay of sensations allows for the detection of potential threats and appropriate responses to stimuli. However, the challenge is to enable flexible electronics to respond to mechanical stimuli such as biological skin, and researchers have not clearly reported the successful integration of somatic mechanical perception and sensation management functions into neuro-like electronics. In this work, an afferent nerve-like device with a pressure sensor and a perception management module is proposed. The pressure sensor comprises two conductive fabric layers and an ionic hydrogel, forming a capacitor structure that emulates the swift transition from tactile to pain perception under mechanical stimulation. Drawing inspiration from the neuronal "gate control" mechanism, the sensation management module adjusts signals in response to rubbing, accelerating the discharge process and reducing the perception duration, thereby replicating the inhibitory effect of biological neurons on pain following tactile interference. This integrated device, encompassing somatic mechanical perception and sensation management, holds promise for applications in soft robotics, prosthetics, and human-machine interaction.

ABSTRACT

Hypothyroidism has been found to have long-term effects on each of the senses, but with proper treatment, many of them can be significantly minimized. This paper analyzes the research on the impact of hypothyroidism on the senses of smell, taste, hearing, vision, and thermoregulation. Data were collected from the National Library of Medicine, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "hypothyroidism," "taste," "smell," "vision," "hearing," and "thermoregulation." Approximately 413 articles were found when searching with these parameters, and 30 were used in this paper. Studies were excluded if they were outside this paper's scope or older than 2012. Studies were included if they specifically focused on hypothyroidism and one of the five listed senses. Patients with hypothyroidism had a significantly increased risk of sensorineural hearing loss, decreased perception of the blue-yellow color axis, decreased sense of olfaction and number of olfactory bulbs, and decreased thermogenesis. Hypothyroidism was also found to show increased length of COVID-19-induced anosmia and decreased bitter taste perception. It can be concluded that hypothyroidism has many effects on the senses, particularly an increased risk of sensorineural hearing loss. More studies need to be done on these effects.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with intra-articular temporomandibular disorders (IA-TMDs) often report limitations with mouth opening activities. While clinical measures such as active range of motion (AROM) and movement quality are often used to assess mouth opening function, it is unclear if and how these relate to patient-reported limitations and whether other factors such as kinesiophobia influence mouth opening activities in those with IA-TMDs. OBJECTIVES: Compare clinical measures of mouth opening function in those with IA-TMDs to asymptomatic controls. In those with an IA/TMD, explore relationships between patient-reported mouth opening limitations, and mouth opening function and kinesiophobia. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHOD: Clinical mouth opening function (AROM, movement quality, pain on movement/10, stiffness on movement/10) was compared between groups (n = 30 IA-TMD, n = 30 controls). Within the IA-TMD group, correlations between patient-reported mouth opening limitations (Patient specific functional scale), kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for Temporomandibular Disorders) and clinical measures of mouth opening function were explored. RESULTS: Impairments in AROM (-4 mm, p = 0.04, d = 0.5), movement quality (p < 0.01, φ = 0.6), pain on movement (p < 0.01, d = 0.8) and stiffness on movement (p < 0.01, d = 1.6) were observed in the IA-TMD group compared to controls. Patient-reported mouth opening limitations and kinesiophobia were significantly correlated (r = -0.48, p < 0.01); no correlation was found between patient-reported limitations and clinical mouth opening measures (r < 0.3, p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mouth opening function is impaired in IA-TMD. However, kinesiophobia appears more related to patient-reported mouth opening limitations than clinical impairments. Consideration of clinical, kinesiophobia and patient-reported limitation measures are necessary to direct management of IA-TMD in those presenting for care.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dysphagia can involve any structure from the mouth to the lower esophageal sphincter. The etiologies vary from benign causes to malignant lesions. There is dearth of data regarding dysphagia in our population. Methods: A total of 208 patients with complaints of dysphagia were screened for the study. After ruling out neurological/local oropharyngeal causes of dysphagia, 200 patients with suspected esophageal dysphagia (ED) were recruited in the study. Dysphagia was graded as per the dysphagia scoring system. All patients underwent upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy and were evaluated for the presence of mechanical and non-mechanical causes of ED. Results: The mean age of patients with dysphagia was 53.8 ± 15.4 years. with males and females being 82 and 118, respectively. The mean duration of the symptom was 7.2 ± 10.6 months (median 3 months). Ninety-eight patients (49%) having dysphagia were in the age group of 56-65 years. The dysphagia score was 0 among 58, and 4 among 26 subjects. Foreign body sensation was the most frequent chief complaint in 90 (45%) patients. Ninety-six (48%) and 104 (52%) patients had mechanical and non-mechanical causes of dysphagia, respectively. Among mechanical causes of dysphagia, 68 patients (70.8%) had esophageal growth and 28 (29.2%) had esophageal stricture. Sixty-seven patients had squamous cell carcinoma. Among non-mechanical causes, 50 (48.1%) had globus sensation, 24 (23.1%) had hiatus hernia, and 16 (15.4%) functional dysphagia. Conclusion: Dysphagia is a common problem with varied etiologies. The esophageal growth and globus sensation are among the predominant causes of ED. We stress that all patients of dysphagia must be meticulously investigated.

ABSTRACT

Natural organisms have evolved precise sensing systems relying on unique ion channels, which can efficiently perceive various physical/chemical stimuli based on ionic signal transmission in biological fluid environments. However, it is still a huge challenge to achieve extensive applications of the artificial counterparts as an efficient wet sensing platform due to the fluidity of the working medium. Herein, nanofluidic membranes with selective cation transport properties and solid-state organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with amplified signals are integrated together to mimic human gustatory sensation, achieving ionic gustatory reagent recognition and a portable configuration. Cu-HHTP nanofluidic membranes with selective cation transport through their uniform micropores are constructed first, followed by assembly with OECTs to form the designed nanofluidic membrane-assisted OECTs (nanofluidic OECTs). As a result, they can distinguish typically ionic gustatory reagents, and even ionic liquids (ILs), demonstrating enhanced gustatory perception performance under a wide concentration range (10-7-10-1 m) compared with those of conventional OECTs. The linear correlations between the response and the reagent concentration further indicate the promising potential for practical application as a next-generation sensing platform. It is suggested that nanofluidic membranes mediated intramembrane cation transport based on the steric hindrance effect, resulting in distinguishable and improved response to multiple ions.

BACKGROUND: Kinesio tape (KT) is known to enhance tactile sensation. In stroke rehabilitation, KT is often used alongside conventional therapy (CT) to improve balance recovery. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of plantar KT in enhancing plantar tactile sensation (PTS) and balance ability in subacute stroke patients. METHODS: In this randomized crossover trial, 22 subacute stroke participants were randomly assigned to receive no taping, paretic plantar KT, or bilateral plantar KT, with a 24-h washout period between each condition. All participants underwent 30 min of CT. The primary outcome was PTS, involving tactile sensitivity in five areas on the plantar surface and the contact area with the ground of the paretic foot. The one-leg stand (OLS) time, functional reach test (FRT), and timed up-and-go test (TUG) were employed as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Paretic plantar KT application led to significant increases in the contact area, OLS, FRT, and TUG test times. Particularly, bilateral plantar KT showed significantly greater improvement in PTS compared to paretic plantar KT. Additionally, bilateral plantar KT significantly improved OLS (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.575), FRT (p < 0.001, η2 = 781), and TUG (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.771) times compared with paretic plantar KT. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that plantar KT improved PTS and balance ability in stroke rehabilitation. The findings suggest that bilateral plantar KT as an adjunct to CT may have a beneficial effect on balance recovery in patients with subacute stroke. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical trial KCT0009048.

OBJECTIVES: The static and dynamic correlations of postural stability to its three potential contributors, namely, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength remain unclear among people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). This study aimed to compare static and dynamic postural stability, along with proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength between people with and without CAI and explore their correlations. METHODS: Sixty-seven participants with CAI and 67 participants without CAI were enrolled in this study. Ankle proprioception, plantar tactile sensation, and lower limb strength were measured by a proprioception test device, a set of monofilaments, and a strength testing system, respectively. Static and dynamic postural stability were measured during standing and jump landing on a force plate and indicated by the root mean square of center of pressure and time to stability. RESULTS: Compared to people without CAI, people with CAI had poorer postural stability, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength. Both groups demonstrated correlation between proprioception and static postural stability, but only people without CAI showed correlation between proprioception and dynamic postural stability. Both groups demonstrated a correlation between tactile sensation and static postural stability, but not with dynamic stability. Both groups demonstrated a correlation between strength and both static and dynamic postural stability. CONCLUSIONS: People with CAI had deficits in static and dynamic postural stability, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength. Among people with CAI, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength can help maintain static postural stability; strength can help maintain dynamic postural stability, whereas proprioception may not provide sufficient information for dynamic postural stability.

Sound serves as a potent medium for emotional well-being, with phenomena like the autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) showing a unique capacity for inducing relaxation and alleviating stress. This study aimed to understand how tingling sensations (and, for comparison, pleasant feelings) that such videos induce relate to acoustic features, using a broader range of ASMR videos as stimuli. The sound texture statistics and their timing predictive of tingling and pleasantness were identified through L1-regularized linear regression. Tingling was well-predicted (r = 0.52), predominantly by the envelope of frequencies near 5 kHz in the 1500 to 750 ms period before the response: stronger tingling was associated with a lower amplitude around the 5 kHz frequency range. This finding was further validated using an independent set of ASMR sounds. The prediction of pleasantness was more challenging (r = 0.26), requiring a longer effective time window, threefold that for tingling. These results enhance our understanding of how specific acoustic elements can induce tingling sensations, and how these elements differ from those that induce pleasant feelings. Our findings have potential applications in optimizing ASMR stimuli to improve quality of life and alleviate stress and anxiety, thus expanding the scope of ASMR stimulus production beyond traditional methods.
