ABSTRACT

Forage nutrient contents are an important factor explaining the dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and methane emissions (CH4) of ruminants fed indoors. However, for grazing animals, the forage nutrient contents might be limited in explaining such response variables. We aimed to verify the explanatory power of forage nutrient contents and sward structure on daily intake, performance, and CH4 emissions by sheep and beef cattle grazing different grassland types in southern Brazil. We analyzed data from five grazing trials using sheep and beef cattle grazing on Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), mixed Italian ryegrass and black oat (Lolium multiflorum + Avena strigosa), pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum), and multispecies native grassland. We used mixed models, including the forage nutrient contents [crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF)], sward structure (sward height and herbage mass) and their interactions, as fixed effects and trial, season, methodologies, animal species, grassland type, and paddock, as random effects. The model for DMI (kg DM/LW0.75) had an adjusted coefficient of determination (R2adj) of 71.6 %, where 11.3, 23.1, and 37.2 % of the R2adj were explained by the forage nutrient contents, sward structure, and their interaction, respectively. The ADG (kg/LW0.75) model presented an R2adj of 74.2 %, with 12.5 % explained by forage nutrient contents, 29.3 % by sward structure, and 32.4 % by their interaction. The daily CH4 emission (g/LW0.75) model had a lower adjusted coefficient of determination (R2adj = 47.6 %), with 16.8 % explained by forage nutrient contents and 30.8 % explained by sward structure, but no effect of the interaction. Our results show that in grazing ecosystems, the forage nutrient contents explain a small fraction, and the greater explanatory power for DMI, ADG, and CH4 emissions models is related to sward structure descriptors, such as sward height and herbage mass. Moreover, the interaction between these variables explains most of the variation. In conclusion, forage nutrient contents and sward structure have different influences on DMI, ADG, and CH4 emissions by grazing ruminants. Because of its relevance to daily CH4 emissions, offering an optimal sward structure to grazing animals is a major climate-smart strategy to improve animal production and mitigate CH4 emissions in pastoral ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Temporary permissions are often granted for track use on peatlands. However, even when peatland track designs attempt to minimise environmental impacts via use of mesh systems, such linear disturbances may have persistent impacts. We evaluated the surface peatland structure of five abandoned tracks (four with a mesh surface, one unsurfaced) with varying past usage frequencies, at an upland site in northern England. Simplification of the surface nanotopography was found on all tracks compared to surrounding control areas, with increased micro-erosion patterns in rutted areas, and invasive species on some treatments. The frequency of previous usage was not found to be a significant factor controlling nano-topographic loss. Edge effects and hillslope position were influential in places, but these effects were not consistent across treatments. Nano-topographic recovery was found to be inhibited when track usage commenced within a short time frame after track construction. Mesh tracks appear to create a spatial constraint leading to poor development of plants and a reduced ability to form characteristic structures which are integral to mire function.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of structural characteristics of deferred pastures of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk (signal grass) subjected to associations of sward heights (10, 20, 30, and 40 cm) at the beginning of deferment and grazing periods (1, 28, 56, 85, and 113 days). The experiment was arranged in a split-plot and completely randomized-block design with two replicates. Pastures remained deferred from March to June 2010. From June to the beginning of October 2010, deferred pastures were utilized by steers under continuous grazing and at a fixed initial stocking rate of 3.5 AU ha-1. At the beginning of the deferment, the coefficient of variation (CV) for pasture height was reduced linearly with the pasture height. During the grazing period, in the winter, the CV for pasture height was not influenced by initial pasture height; however, it responded quadratically to the grazing period, with a maximum value of 36.4% at 71 days of the period of utilization. The CV for tiller height was reduced linearly with pasture height at the beginning of deferment but increased linearly along with the grazing period. The initial pasture height did not change the CV of the falling index. However, the latter was quadratically influenced by the grazing period, with a maximum value of 59.5% at 67 days of the utilization period. Signal grass pastures deferred at a lower height have a higher spatial variability of the vegetation. In the grazing period, there are changes in the spatial variability of the vegetation of the deferred signal grass.

ABSTRACT

This work was conducted to evaluate the effect of deferred pasture condition of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu in the late winter on tillering during the growing season. The treatments were three pasture conditions at late winter: short pasture, tall pasture and tall/mown pasture. In September and October, tiller appearance rate (TApR) and tiller mortality rate (TMoR) were greater in the tall/mown pasture. In November and December, tall pasture presented greater TApR. From November to January the TMoR was greater in the tall pasture. The tiller stability index of short and tall/mown pastures were greater in October. The short pasture presented a greater tiller number than the tall and tall/mown pastures during the entire experimental period. Deferred and short pasture of marandu palisade grass at late winter presents in general lower tiller mortality and higher population density of tillers from the early spring onwards, in comparison to tall pasture. The mowing of marandu palisade grass with high forage mass at the late winter, although it only temporarily compromises the population stability of tillers, also stimulates its fast tillering from spring on.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effects of post-grazing sward height (PGSH, 4 or 6 cm) on herbage production, its nutritive value, dry matter (DM) intake, grazing behaviour and growth of early- (EM) and late-maturing (LM) breed suckler steers (n = 72), and the subsequent effect of indoor finishing diet (grass silage + 3.8 kg concentrate DM/head daily (SC), or grass silage only (SO)) on performance and carcass traits. Animals rotationally grazed pasture for 196 days, followed by indoor finishing for 119 days. At pasture, daily live-weight gain (LWG) was 0.10 kg greater for PGSH-6 than PGSH-4, resulting in a tendency for carcass weight to be 11 kg heavier. Although EM had a 0.10 kg greater daily LWG at pasture than LM, carcass weight did not differ between the genotypes. There was a genotype × PGSH interaction for carcass fat score, whereby there was no difference between EM-4 (8.83, 15-point scale) and EM-6 (8.17), but LM-6 (7.28) was greater than LM-4 (6.33). Although concentrate supplementation during indoor finishing increased carcass weight (+37 kg) and fat score (1.75 units), the majority of steers (83% of EM and 78% of LM) achieved a commercially-acceptable carcass fat score (6.78) at slaughter in the grass-forage-only system.

ABSTRACT

The intensity and frequency of grazing affect the defoliating strategy of ruminants, their daily nutrient intake, thus nutrition and physiological status. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pastures were grazed by sheep either under a low-intensity/high-frequency grazing strategy (Rotatinuous stocking; RN) with nominal pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 18 and 11 cm, respectively, or under a high-intensity/low-frequency strategy (traditional rotational stocking; RT) with nominal pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 25 and 5 cm, respectively. Treatments were arranged under a complete randomized design and evaluated over two periods, in different years. In 2017, the aim was to depict the type of bites that sheep perform during the grazing-down and associate them to the grazing management strategy according to their relative contribution to the diet ingested. In 2018 we estimated the total nutrient intake and evaluated blood indicators of the nutritional status and immune response to stress of sheep. The bite types accounting the most for the diet ingested by RN sheep were those performed on the "top stratum" of plants with around 20, 15, and 25 cm, whereas the type of bites accounting the most for the diet of RT sheep were those performed on "grazed plants" with around 10, 5, and ≤ 3 cm. In 2018, the RN sheep increased by 18% the total organic matter (OM) intake and by 20-25% the intake of soluble nutrients (i.e., crude protein, total soluble sugars, crude fat), digestible OM and of metabolizable energy, and had 17.5, 18, and 6.1% greater blood concentration of glucose, urea nitrogen (BUN) and albumin, respectively, but 17% lower blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (N:L) ratio. Sheep grazing vegetative Italian ryegrass pastures under the low-intensity/high-frequency grazing strategy (RN) ingested a diet of better quality from bites allocated on the top stratum of plants, had greater intake of soluble nutrients and blood parameters positively associated with nutritional status and immune response to stress.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine whether rotational grazing generates horse, pasture, or cost benefits over continuous grazing. The study established two replicates (1.57 ha each) of rotational (R; four grazing sections and a stress lot per replicate, where horses were fed a moderate quality grass hay at 2% of body weight when not grazing) and continuous (C) grazing systems (treatments). Twelve Standardbred mares were grazed for an overall stocking rate of 0.52 ha/horse (n = 3 in each pasture). Recommended management practices for each grazing system were followed for 27 mo including three grazing seasons. Samples were collected monthly between 0800 and 1000. Results were analyzed in SAS (V9.4) using mixed model repeated-measures analysis of covariance, chi-square tests of association, and two-sample t-tests. Alpha level was set at P < 0.05. The C horses were maintained on pasture for 100% of the study duration (844 d; August 1, 2014 to November 22, 2016), while R horses had access to pasture for approximately half of this time (408 ± 33 d). The average length of grazing bout per rotational grazing section during the grazing season increased numerically each year from 7.88 ± 0.76 d in 2014, 10.0 ± 0.61 d in 2015, and 10.9 ± 0.80 d in 2016. Average horse body condition score (BCS) and body fat differed by treatment, with C horses (BCS 6.3 ± 0.05, 17.9 ± 0.15% body fat) greater than R horses (BCS 5.9 ± 0.05, 16.8 ± 0.15% body fat). Both sward height and herbage mass were greater in R (11.8 ± 0.1 cm tall; 1,513 ± 41 kg/ha) than C pastures (6.9 ± 0.1 cm tall; 781 ± 35 kg/ha). The R pastures had higher proportions of vegetative and total cover, planted grasses (tall fescue and orchardgrass), and weeds but lower proportions of grass weeds (nonplanted grasses) and other (rocks, litter, bare ground, etc.) as compared with C pastures. Digestible energy, acid detergent fiber, and calcium were higher in R vs. C pastures; however, crude protein was lower in R vs. C pastures. There were no significant differences between treatments for average monthly amount of hay fed (C, 597 ± 34.1 vs. R, 659 ± 34.1 kg) or average monthly pasture maintenance cost (C, $17.55 ± 3.14 vs. R, $20.50 ± 3.14). This study is one of few replicated experiments comparing the effects of rotational and continuous grazing for horses on pasture quality, horse condition, and production costs. The results here support the recommendation of rotational grazing for production, environmental, and ecological purposes.

ABSTRACT

The relative contribution of young, mature and old tillers in the canopy influences the production and structure of the pasture. The objective with this work was to evaluate the balance between tiller appearance and tiller death (BAL) during spring and early summer, the morphology and percentages of young, mature and old tillers in Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu (marandu palisadegrass) with three conditions in late winter: short (24.1 cm), tall (49.0 cm) and tall (50.0 cm)/mown (8 cm). Tall and tall/mown pastures presented higher BAL in September and October, respectively. In January, BAL was higher in short and tall/mown pastures than in tall pasture. The tiller number was higher in short pasture, intermediate in tall/mown pasture and lower in tall pasture. The percentage of old tillers was higher in short and tall pastures compared to tall/mown pasture. The percentage of live leaf lamina reduced, while the percentage of dead leaf lamina increased with tiller age. Mowing of the tall marandu palisadegrass pasture in late winter increases the renewal of tillers in the spring and decreases the percentage of old tillers in the summer. The old tillers present worse morphology than young tillers.

ABSTRACT

Image-based modeling, and more precisely, Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS), is emerging as a flexible, self-service, remote sensing tool for generating fine-grained digital surface models (DSMs) in the Earth sciences and ecology. However, drone-based SfM + MVS applications have developed at a rapid pace over the past decade and there are now many software options available for data processing. Consequently, understanding of reproducibility issues caused by variations in software choice and their influence on data quality is relatively poorly understood. This understanding is crucial for the development of SfM + MVS if it is to fulfill a role as a new quantitative remote sensing tool to inform management frameworks and species conservation schemes. To address this knowledge gap, a lightweight multirotor drone carrying a Ricoh GR II consumer-grade camera was used to capture replicate, centimeter-resolution image datasets of a temperate, intensively managed grassland ecosystem. These data allowed the exploration of method reproducibility and the impact of SfM + MVS software choice on derived vegetation canopy height measurement accuracy. The quality of DSM height measurements derived from four different, yet widely used SfM-MVS software-Photoscan, Pix4D, 3DFlow Zephyr, and MICMAC, was compared with in situ data captured on the same day as image capture. We used both traditional agronomic techniques for measuring sward height, and a high accuracy and precision differential GPS survey to generate independent measurements of the underlying ground surface elevation. Using the same replicate image dataset (n = 3) as input, we demonstrate that there are 1.7, 2.0, and 2.5 cm differences in RMSE (excluding one outlier) between the outputs from different SfM + MVS software using High, Medium, and Low quality settings, respectively. Furthermore, we show that there can be a significant difference, although of small overall magnitude between replicate image datasets (n = 3) processed using the same SfM + MVS software, following the same workflow, with a variance in RMSE of up to 1.3, 1.5, and 2.7 cm (excluding one outlier) for "High," "Medium," and "Low" quality settings, respectively. We conclude that SfM + MVS software choice does matter, although the differences between products processed using "High" and "Medium" quality settings are of small overall magnitude.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated how changing the structure of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture under different forage allowances (FA) of 4, 7, 10 and 13kg DM/100kg BW (body weight) affected animal behavior over a two-year evaluation period. The experiment was conducted as a randomized block design with three replications (paddock). Sward height, total forage, and stem mass were lower for pastures managed with lower FA. Lower leaf mass was observed for lower FA in the second year. In hand-plucked samples, leaf and stem percentages remained unchanged in the morning but leaf percentage increased while stems decreased in the afternoon. Permanence time decreased linearly with increasing FA. In turn, a quadratic effect was observed for displacement rate. The bite rate was similar among different FAs. The results demonstrate that FA varying between 7 and 10kg DM/100kg BW are more suitable to balance the amounts of leaves and stems in the sward. The studied FA levels do not limit forage availability. Permanence time decreases and displacement rate increases as FA increases.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Plane of nutrition (PN) offered to ewe replacements during the rearing phase (8 to 17 months) and first pregnancy may affect reproductive and progeny performance when replacements are joined at ~19 months. The effects of PN offered to spring-born ewe replacements during their first winter (winter_1), second summer (summer_2) and subsequent winter (mid and late pregnancy; winter_2) were evaluated, over 3 consecutive years, using 287 ewe lambs of four genotypes: Charmoise×Scottish Blackface (C×SBF), Belclare×SBF (Bel×SBF), Belclare (Bel) and Belclare×SBF (heterozygous for a gene, either FecGH or FecXG mutations, that increases ovulation rate: BelMG×SBF). Ewe lambs were offered, daily, a deferred-grazed herbage allowance (HA) of either 0.75 or 1.75 kg dry matter during winter_1. During summer_2 the replacements were set-stocked to maintain sward heights of 4 or 6 cm. Ewes were housed during mid and late pregnancy (winter_2) and offered either medium or high-feed-value grass silage, thus yielding a 2×2×2 factorial design. Increasing HA during winter_1 and residual sward height during summer_2 increased ewe BW post joining (P0.05) on number of lambs reared. Increasing HA during winter_1 increased lamb BW at birth (P<0.05) and reduced carcass fat score (P<0.05). There was a significant interaction between PN offered during winter_1 and summer_2 for average daily gain (ADG) from birth to 5 weeks (P<0.01) and from 5 to 10 weeks (P<0.05): progeny of replacements that experienced either a high or low PN throughout the rearing phase had lower ADG than lambs born to the replacements that experienced a low PN only during winter_1 or summer_2. Increasing PN during winter_2 increased ewe BW (P<0.001), lamb BW at birth (P<0.001) and weaning (P<0.05) and reduced the proportion of ewes that failed to lamb (P<0.01). Ewe genotype had a significant (P<0.001) effect on litter size (1.48 to 2.45), number of lambs reared, lamb BW at birth and weaning, lamb ADG and age at slaughter. It is concluded that, among the nutrition treatments examined, increasing PN during mid and late pregnancy had the greatest effect on ewe and progeny performance. Although increasing PN offered during winter_1 increased lamb birth BW, PN offered during summer_2 had no effect on lamb performance. There were no significant interactions between PN and ewe genotype.

ABSTRACT

Plane of nutrition (PN) offered to ewe replacements during the rearing phase (8 to 17 months) affects BW at joining and may affect reproductive performance when joined at ~19 months. The effects of PN offered to ewe replacements during their first winter (winter_1) and second summer (summer_2) were evaluated over 3 consecutive years, using 287 spring-born ewe lambs, representing four genotypes (Belclare (Bel), Charmoise×Scottish Blackface (C×SBF), Bel×SBF (Bel×SBF), Bel×SBF that were heterozygous either FecGH or FecXG mutations that increase ovulation rate (OR) (BelMG×SBF)). During extended (deferred) grazing in winter_1 (November to March) the lambs were offered herbage DM allowances (HA) of 0.75 (L) or 1.75 (H) kg/day. During summer_2 (March to August) the replacements were set stocked to maintain sward heights of 4 (L) or 6 (H) cm, thus yielding a 2×2 factorial design for the nutrition treatments (71 to 73 animals/treatment). Increasing HA during winter_1, and residual sward height during summer_2, increased (P0.05) on OR. Mean BW at joining was 53.3, 56.8, 56.6 and 61.7 (SEM 0.74) kg for ewes offered the LL, LH, HL and HH treatments, respectively. Mean OR of C×SBF and BelMG×SBF differed (P<0.001) from that of Bel×SBF by -0.58 and +0.47, respectively. Correlations between linear measurements (LMs) of body size and BW at 7, 12 and 17 months were all positive and significant (P<0.001). The precision of the set of LMs as a predictor of BW at joining improved with age (R 2 0.46, 0.54 and 0.74 at 7, 12 and 17 months) but BW at a given age was a better predictor at all age time points. Chest girth was the best predictor, among the LMs, of BW at joining and its explanatory power increased with age. Equations developed using LMs at 7, 12 or 17 months, to predict BW at joining exhibited biases of -2.1, -1.5 and +0.9 kg, respectively. It is concluded that whilst altering PN during the rearing phase changed BW by 16% it had no effect on OR. There was no interaction (P>0.05) between the PN offered during winter_1 and summer_2, or PN and ewe genotype for BW at joining or OR. LMs, either at 7, 12 or 17 months of age, are useful predictors of BW at joining.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate the pattern of displacement of cattle grazing kikuyu grass swards at different pre-grazing heights of 10, 15, 20 and 25cm and submitted to grazing down to a same level of defoliation of 50% of initial pre-grazing height. Patterns of exploitation of feed stations were evaluated from direct observation of two animals (1/observer) per experimental unit with recording of codes (steps, bites, and other activities in a portable recorder device. The evaluations were performed twice a day (10 and 15h) during one hour, at the first and the last day of stocking period. Moreover, at pre and post-grazing were evaluated: herbage mass, leaf mass and sheath, and extended tiller height. The experimental design was a complete randomized block design with three replications and four treatments. The variables steps per minute, number of bites per feeding station, and bite rate were higher in lower pastures decreasing as the sward height increased in the initial phase with no difference in the final phase of grazing down. During the initial phase of the grazing down the animals presented differences in displacement patterns, where sward heights of 20 to 25cm in Kikuyu grass presented better conditions for foraging by grazing animals. Grazing down pastures to 50% of initial grazing height negatively affects displacement patterns of animals, irrespective of pre-grazing heights targets.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) is one of the most cultivated temperate annual forage crop around the world. Despite that, there is little information about the process of stem elongation during its vegetative growth. This information would be useful for grazing management purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the herbage accumulation and stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass pastures submitted to intermittent stocking. The experimental design used was a completely randomized 2x2 factorial with three replications. The treatments were defined by the combination of two pre-grazing heights (15 and 25cm) associated with two post-grazing heights (4 and 8cm). The herbage accumulation rates were higher in pastures with 25cm pre-grazing associated with post-grazing heights of 8cm. However, leaf production rate was only affected by post-grazing height, with higher values being recorded for stubbles heights of 8cm, regardless of pre-grazing height. Stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass tillers increased rapidly when pastures reached around 18cm, a condition where there was a relatively low competition for light, suggesting that; 1) pre-grazing heights of 18 to 20cm in annual ryegrass could be used as a upper limit for grazing management purposes whether the objective is to minimize stem contribution in accumulated herbage and 2) It seems that stem elongation is as inevitable process (independently of competition for light) and that this could be related to the necessary strength of stems, pseudostems and sheaths to support larger and heavier leaves.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of beef heifers in natural grassland under continuous and rotational grazing during the autumn-winter period. The treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design and conducted using the forage mass above eight cm and 50% of the leaf blades mass of tussocks. The animals were Brangus beef heifers with initial body weight of 258kg. The variables evaluated were available forage mass (FMa), leaf blades mass of tussocks (LBMt), real forage allowance (FAr), sward height of the lower stratum (HLS), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), organic matter digestibility (OMD), total digestible nutrients (TDN), average daily gain (ADG), body condition score (BCS), reproductive tract score (RTS) and stocking rate (SR). FMa, HLS, OMD and TDN decreased while FAr, CP and NDF were similar during the experimental period. The ADG was positive only at third experimental period while BCS, RTS and SR decreased over time. The natural grassland management under continuous and rotational grazing during the autumn-winter period, using the forage mass above 8cm and 50% of the leaf blades mass of tussocks, does not allow the adequate corporal development for breeding the beef heifers at 24 months old.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify attributes that can serve as a basis in formulating indirect methods and non-destructive evaluation of leaf area and herbage mass during the establishment phase of Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), under nitrogen fertilization levels. For this purpose it was used results obtained in a previous experiment where the treatments consisted of nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg / ha of urea-N), allocated to the plots, combined with sampling dates in sub-plots (days after planting, DAP), with four replications. The variables studied were: interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), canopy height, leaf area index (LAI), frequency of occurrence of plants (F%) and herbage mass (HM). The results indicated that at 87 DAP, the PAR intercepted was functionally related to both the height and the LAI of the canopy. The frequency of occurrence of plants, while indirect estimator showed fitness similar to the direct LAI, in its relation to PAR intercepted, but with a tendency to saturation for values of F> 80%. On the other hand, values of F (%) at 67 DAP, correlated significantly with the HM values obtained after 87 DAP. It was concluded that the frequency of occurrence of an attribute is promising in terms of its use as an indirect method and nondestructive evaluation of LAI and herbage mass in Tifton 85, meriting further studies.

ABSTRACT

The joint analysis of morphogenesis and dynamic of tiller population allows understanding the responses patterns of grasses to environment. Thus, this study was conducted to identify the relationship between morphogenesis and tillers dynamics of Brachiaria decumbens under continuous stocking with cattle. For this, the appearance of leaves and tillers, the elongation of leaves and stems, the leaf lifespan and mortality and survival rates of tillers were evaluated in pastures with two grazing management strategies for three seasons (winter, spring and summer). The regression equations between variables were estimated. The tiller appearance rate increased linearly with leaf appearance rate (Y = -0.9514X + 385.24, R² = 0.91), leaf elongation rate (Y = 2.5965X + 26.746, R² = 0.88) and stem elongation rate (Y = 7.5663X + 117.46, R² = 0.77). Same pattern occurred for a tiller mortality rate. Moreover, the tiller survival rate decreased linearly as a function of appearance rate (Y = 96.26 to 124.19 X, R² = 0.52) and elongation rate (Y = 95.653 + 9.1489X, R² = 0.56) of leaf. The leaf lifespan caused a linear increase in tiller survival rate (Y = 78.836 + 0.1085X, R² = 0.52). The changes in morphogenesis of individual tillers, which occur during the seasons, change the dynamic of tiller population in B. decumbens pasture.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the morphological and structural characteristics and the herbage accumulation, in (Brachiaria brizantha cv. 'Marandu') marandu palisadegrass pastures subjected to three grazing heights under continuous stocking. It was used a randomized block design, with two replicates and three sward heights 15, 30 and 45cm. The biggest leaf appearance and the smallest basal tiller densities decreased were found in 15cm pasture The herbage accumulation was similar among the pastures managed with different grazing intensities. The marandu palisadegrass presents high management flexibility, and may be utilized between 15 and 45cm sward height.

ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted aiming to compare the efficiency of the methods rising plate meter (RP), sward stick (SS), ruler and capacitance meter (CM), used to estimate herbage mass on pastures. The instruments were used in stargrass pasture (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis) under continuous stocking, variable stocking rate, and sward heights. The design was completely randomized with two replicates and the treatments were sward heights: 5, 10, 15, and 20cm. The sward height at paddock was maintained by stocking rate adjustments using Nellore heifers (Bos indicus). The swards were evaluated monthly, from November 7th, 2007 to April 26th, 2008. The effectiveness of each method to quantify the herbage mass was evaluated by the regression equation. The capacitance meter did not show consistent results. The values of coefficient of determination for the evaluation of herbage mass were low and less than 0.63 with the SS, RP and the ruler. Measurements of herbage mass on swards of stargrass under continuous stocking can be performed preferably with the RP, or with the SS and the ruler.

ABSTRACT

The preference of lactating dairy cows for grazed herbage or maize silage (MS), simultaneously offered ad libitum in the field, was examined at two sward heights (SH 4-6 and 8-10cm) and two concentrate levels (CL 0 and 6kg day-1) in a 2x2 factorial arrangement within a completely randomised experimental design. The experiment lasted 35 days and was carried out in spring using 24 multiparous Holstein Friesian cows. On average, the cows proportionately spent more time grazing than eating MS (0.85:0.15) and even though the higher rate of intake (RI) of dry matter (DM) of MS compared with grazed herbage (76 versus 26g DM min-1), the proportion of total DM intake as herbage was higher compared to that of MS (0.56:0.44). The higher crude protein and low fibre content of grazed herbage appeared to have a higher priority of choice than RI, as the cows chose to graze for longer (grazing time 385 min, MS feeding time 67min) despite the lower RI of herbage. The low proportion MS intake indicated that RI was a secondary factor of choice. Concentrate supplementation had a greater depressing effect on herbage intake than on MS intake. These results suggest that the animals reduce the intake of feed with lower RI when the labor associated to eat is decreased. The factors influencing the choice for herbage over maize silage remain unclear.
